ABSTRACT

Objective:To evaluate the performance of the automated digital cell morphology instrument in detecting platelet (PLT) clumps. Methods:A total of 4271 blood samples whose PLT reached the reviewing rules of thrombocytopenia were selected from inpatients having blood analysis in Xijing Hospital from January 1 st to June 30 th, 2019, including 2 200 males and 2 071 females, with a median age of (35±7.03) years old. The smears for these cases were made, stained by Wright-Giemsa, and examined to capture PLT clumps by digital cell morphology system and manual microscope separately. The digital cell analysis system (hereinafter referred to as the instrument method) as an evaluation method and the microscope method as a reference method were used to calculate the positive rate of platelet clump detection and evaluate the comparison of two methods and bias assessments. The chi-square test was used to compare counting data rates. Results:Among 4, 271 samples reaching the reviewing rule of thrombocytopenia, 128 cases with platelet clumps were detected by manual microscope(initial) with a positive detection rate of 96.24%, and a total 133 of cases with PLT clumps were detected by microscope (initial+reconfirmation) with a positive detection rate of 100 %. Meanwhile, 129 cases with platelet clumps were detected by instrument method with a positive detection rate of 96.9%. There was no significant difference in terms of positive rate of PLT clumps detection between the instrumental method and the microscope method (initial) ( χ2 =0.115, P=0.73); the positive rate of clumps detection by the instrumental method was lower than microscope method (initial+reconfirmation), and the difference was statistically significant (χ 2 =4.061, P=0.04). For instrument method, the positive rate of PLT clumps detection by simultaneous observation of RBC analysis interface+PLT aggregation interface+WBC analysis interface was higher than only observation of PLT aggregation interface, and the difference was statistically significant (χ 2 =5.090, P=0.02). The average error of the deviation of PLT counting results before and after correction of the cases with PLT plumps missed by instrument method was significantly higher than microscope method (initial), and the difference was statistically significant (χ 2 =56.26, P<0.001). Conclusion:The automated digital cell morphology system has a good consistency with manual microscope(initial) in terms of the sensitivity of platelet clumps detection and can be used as a supplementary method for detecting platelet aggregation.

ABSTRACT

BackgroundThe potential roles of affective responses to environmental stressors in individuals physical and mental health are complex and multi-faceted. This study, then, explores Chinese citizens emotional responses to COVID-19-related stressors and influence factors which may boost or buffer such effects. MethodsFrom late March to early June (2020), a cross-sectional study was conducted using an anonymous online questionnaire included demographic characteristics, COVID-19-related stressors related to individuals daily functioning, and the self-assessed impact of protective and adverse internal factors on emotions. Results1,662 questionnaires were received from residents in 32 Chinese provinces classified by prevalence level according to COVID-19 infections. Among the 17 positive and negative emotional responses, agglomerative hierarchical clustering revealed four subclassifications: (1) stress relations; (2) missing someone relations; (3) individual relations; and (4) social relations. Additionally, heightened regional prevalence levels positively corresponded to intensity of stress relations. Lowest intensity of social relations was found in the areas surrounding Wuhan and coastal areas. Specially, economic- and work-related stressors as well as negative self-perceptions (e.g., suppression, emotionally unstable, self-denial) implicated in negative emotions. While positive emotions were tied to demographic characteristics (e.g., high education, young age and male) and protective traits (e.g., creativity, sympathy, social responsibility), and inversely linked to relationships- and pandemic-related stressors, etc. ConclusionAssociations were clearly noted among Chinese residents emotions to specific stressors during pandemic. Providing appropriate psychological resources/supports during future or extended public health crises may help offset the cognitive burden of individuals striving to regain an adequate level of normalcy and emotional well-being.

ABSTRACT

We report a new method for the determination of naturally abundant 15N (concentration of 15N) in ammonium (NH4+) in water samples, including drinking water, surface water, groundwater, and seawater, by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) based on the isotopic analysis of hexamethylenetetramine. The resulting product was obtained by the reaction between ammonium ions and formaldehyde under the given conditions (pH = 6.0, 40 °C, 30 min). Then, the species was extracted (with chloroform) and concentrated at pH = 8.5 and measured by GC-MS. The results showed that the relative standard deviation (RSD) of the δ15N measurements was less than 10% and the recoveries were in the range of 71-118% (n = 5). The limit of detection was 20 µmol l-1. Compared to the previous method, the present method is simple and highly suitable to be used as a routine method for the 15N/14N analysis of NH4+.

ABSTRACT

Objective Using the information - motivation - behavior model (IMB) to intervene with the alcohol dependence patients and provide a new strategy for implementing health education. Methods Eighty-nine patients with alcohol dependence, who clinically recovered or improved after the discharge, were randomly divided into a research group and a control group. Both groups received routine health education, rehabilitation guidance and a follow-up call. The research group implemented additional IMB health education. The implementation effect on alcohol dependence scale (ADS), Michigan alcoholism screening test (MAST), and alcohol dependence prevention and treatment knowledge (self-designed questionnaire) of the two groups before and after intervention was analyzed. Results The relapse rate of the research group was lower than that the control group, which was statistically significant (P<0.05). MAST scale and ADS scale in the research group were lower than those in the control group within 3 months and 6 months after the discharge, which was significant (P values of both scales <0.05). After the 6-month follow-up, the knowledge of alcohol dependence patients in the research group and their families was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion IMB health education implementation for alcohol dependence patients significantly reduced the relapse rate, decreased physical and psychological dependence, and improved the ability of patients to prevent and control alcohol dependence.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To analyze the treatment and the impact of brain metastases on patients with hepatic alveolar hydatid disease. Methods:The data of 11 patients with hepatic alveolar hydatidosis with brain metastases treated at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from January 2014 to December 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. There were 7 males and 4 females. The age range was 19~49 years, with an average of 34 years. Of 11 patients, 7 were treated with surgery combined with drugs and 4 with drugs only. Analyze the treatment and results of patients. Results:Of the 7 patients who were treated with surgery and drugs, 2 patients underwent hepatectomy. They were treated with regular postoperative oral medication and were well on follow-up. Three patients underwent only brain surgery. On follow-up from 1 to 3 years, one patient developed pneumonia with atelectasis, another patient developed ascites and jaundice with physical decline. The third patient was stable and had an independent life. Two patients underwent partial hepatectomy and hydatidectomy, with one patient requiring repeated hydatidectomies. On follow-up for one of these 2 patients for 5 years, the patient was home bound and could not take care of himself. The other patient was followed up for 3 years and was stable, alive and able of self-care. Four patients were treated with albendazole liposome, including one patient who developed ascites, a second one with weight loss, physical decline, limb edema and a third one with pleural effusion, pelvic effusion and pneumonia. These patients were still alive with improvement of symptoms on supportive treatment. Conclusion:The treatment of hepatic alveolar hydatidosis with brain metastases is still mainly surgery and anti-hydatid drugs. The prognosis of most patients was poor. The surgical principle is neurosurgery first, followed by surgery on liver, lung, spleen and other organs involved by hydatid disease.

ABSTRACT

Objective image retargeting quality assessment aims to use computational models to predict the retargeted image quality consistent with subjective perception. In this paper, we propose a multiple-level feature (MLF)-based quality measure to predict the perceptual quality of retargeted images. We first provide an in-depth analysis on the low-level aspect ratio similarity feature, and then propose a mid-level edge group similarity feature, to better address the shape/structure related distortion. Furthermore, a high-level face block similarity feature is designed to deal with sensitive region deformation. The multiple-level features are complementary as they quantify different aspects of quality degradation in the retargeted image, and the MLF measure learned by regression is used to predict the perceptual quality of retargeted images. Extensive experimental results performed on two public benchmark databases demonstrate that the proposed MLF measure achieves higher quality prediction accuracy than the existing relevant state-of-the-art quality measures.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the importance of conditional control on the results of binary Logistic regression analysis. Methods 664 male patients diagnosed with CHD and 400 healthy controls who visited the Department of Cardiology at People's Hospital of Yuxi City in Yunnan province from October 2010 to March 2013were enrolled consecutively in this case-control study, and 14 physiological and biochemical indexes[including:age,UA,TC,TG,HDL-C,LDL-C,APOA1,APOB100,Lp(a),HCY, TBIL,DBIL,IBIL,γ-GT]were collected. The correlations and differences in mathematical model results between physiological, biochemical indexes and CHD were compared by binary Logistic regression analysis under different statistical analysis strategies and then the model was analyzed by the ROC curve. Results (1)With no conditional control, all of the 14 physiological and biochemical indexes were directly inputted in the binary Logistic regression analysis, and after 11 steps regression analysis,11 indexes[age,UA,TG, HDL-C,LDL-C,APOA1,APOB100, Lp(a), HCY, DBIL, γ-GT]were retained.Because of the self-correcting ability of the binary Logistic regression analysis, relatively satisfactory results can be obtained. However, someof the resultsarehard to explain.(2)According to the application conditions of Logistic regression analysis, after performing the normality test, difference analysis and correlation analysis of these indexes, using condition analysis and control, considering the distribution characteristics of the indexes, excluding internal confounding factors among variables,9 more independent indexes[age,UA,TC,lnTG, lnLp(a),lnHCY,HDL-C,LDL-C and TBIL]were selected for Logistic regression analysis. After 7 steps regression analysis,7 indexes[age, UA, HDL-C, lnTG, lnLp(a), lnHCY and lnTBIL]were finally selected, and the area under the curve is 0.927.Conclusion When the binary Logistic regression analysis was used to confirm risk factors and establish risk assessment models for complex diseases, it is better to adopt strict conditional control to improve the reliability and validity of the analysis.

ABSTRACT

We investigated the serotype, drug resistance features, molecular types, and homology of Salmonella in diarrhea in Tai'an City, and provided scientific evidences for warning, control and clinical treatment. The 31 Salmonella strains isolated from stool specimens of diarrhea in Tai'an were identified by serotyping.Broth dilution technique was used to test the sensitivity of 31 strains of Salmonella to 16 antibiotics.Pulsed field gel-electrophoresis (PFGE) was used for molecular typing and cluster analysis. Results showed that 31 strains of Salmonella were divided into 10 kinds of serotype.S.enteritidis (11/31) was the predominant serotype. All 31 strains of Salmonella were sensitive to cefoxitin and imipenem. The drug resistance rates of the 31 strains of Salmonella were 77.42 % (24/31) to sulfafurazole. The 31 strains of Salmonella were divided into 17 patterns by PFGE,with 100% similarity for each pattern. All the results suggest that there are more serious problems in multiple drug resistance. The genetic variation of S.enteritidis is relatively conservative.Early warning and control on S.enteritidis are exposed to reinforce.

ABSTRACT

Images coded at low bit rates in real-world applications usually suffer from significant compression noise, which significantly degrades the visual quality. Traditional denoising methods are not suitable for the content-dependent compression noise, which usually assume that noise is independent and with identical distribution. In this paper, we propose a unified framework of content-adaptive estimation and reduction for compression noise via low-rank decomposition of similar image patches. We first formulate the framework of compression noise reduction based upon low-rank decomposition. Compression noises are removed by soft thresholding the singular values in singular value decomposition of every group of similar image patches. For each group of similar patches, the thresholds are adaptively determined according to compression noise levels and singular values. We analyze the relationship of image statistical characteristics in spatial and transform domains, and estimate compression noise level for every group of similar patches from statistics in both domains jointly with quantization steps. Finally, quantization constraint is applied to estimated images to avoid over-smoothing. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed method not only improves the quality of compressed images obviously for post-processing, but are also helpful for computer vision tasks as a pre-processing method.

ABSTRACT

During the past few years, there have been various kinds of content-aware image retargeting operators proposed for image resizing. However, the lack of effective objective retargeting quality assessment metrics limits the further development of image retargeting techniques. Different from traditional image quality assessment (IQA) metrics, the quality degradation during image retargeting is caused by artificial retargeting modifications, and the difficulty for image retargeting quality assessment (IRQA) lies in the alternation of the image resolution and content, which makes it impossible to directly evaluate the quality degradation like traditional IQA. In this paper, we interpret the image retargeting in a unified framework of resampling grid generation and forward resampling. We show that the geometric change estimation is an efficient way to clarify the relationship between the images. We formulate the geometric change estimation as a backward registration problem with Markov random field and provide an effective solution. The geometric change aims to provide the evidence about how the original image is resized into the target image. Under the guidance of the geometric change, we develop a novel aspect ratio similarity (ARS) metric to evaluate the visual quality of retargeted images by exploiting the local block changes with a visual importance pooling strategy. Experimental results on the publicly available MIT RetargetMe and CUHK data sets demonstrate that the proposed ARS can predict more accurate visual quality of retargeted images compared with the state-of-the-art IRQA metrics.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, a new compressive sampling-based image coding scheme is developed to achieve competitive coding efficiency at lower encoder computational complexity, while supporting error resilience. This technique is particularly suitable for visual communication with resource-deficient devices. At the encoder, compact image representation is produced, which is a polyphase down-sampled version of the input image; but the conventional low-pass filter prior to down-sampling is replaced by a local random binary convolution kernel. The pixels of the resulting down-sampled pre-filtered image are local random measurements and placed in the original spatial configuration. The advantages of the local random measurements are two folds: 1) preserve high-frequency image features that are otherwise discarded by low-pass filtering and 2) remain a conventional image and can therefore be coded by any standardized codec to remove the statistical redundancy of larger scales. Moreover, measurements generated by different kernels can be considered as the multiple descriptions of the original image and therefore the proposed scheme has the advantage of multiple description coding. At the decoder, a unified sparsity-based soft-decoding technique is developed to recover the original image from received measurements in a framework of compressive sensing. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme is competitive compared with existing methods, with a unique strength of recovering fine details and sharp edges at low bit-rates.

ABSTRACT

This paper proposes a new image denoising algorithm based on adaptive signal modeling and regularization. It improves the quality of images by regularizing each image patch using bandwise distribution modeling in transform domain. Instead of using a global model for all the patches in an image, it employs content-dependent adaptive models to address the non-stationarity of image signals and also the diversity among different transform bands. The distribution model is adaptively estimated for each patch individually. It varies from one patch location to another and also varies for different bands. In particular, we consider the estimated distribution to have non-zero expectation. To estimate the expectation and variance parameters for every band of a particular patch, we exploit the nonlocal correlation in image to collect a set of highly similar patches as the data samples to form the distribution. Irrelevant patches are excluded so that such adaptively learned model is more accurate than a global one. The image is ultimately restored via bandwise adaptive soft-thresholding, based on a Laplacian approximation of the distribution of similar-patch group transform coefficients. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms several state-of-the-art denoising methods in both the objective and the perceptual qualities.

ABSTRACT

To reveal the effects of harvesting stage on the functional constituents of four kinds of Hangbaiju and determine the best harvesting stage. Sixteen samples of Hualei, Taiju, Youju, Quanju were collected from Zhejiang Tongxiang. The content of total flavonoids were determined by UV spectrophotometry. Chlorogenic acid, lutelin-7-O-beta-D-glucoside and 3,5-O-discaffeoylquinc acid were analyzed by HPLC. The results showed that the effect of harvesting stage on the functional constituents of four kinds of Hangbaiju was significant. The contents of total flavonoids and chlorogenic acid reached maximum at the Hualei stage, and next was Taiju. The highest content of lutelin-7-O-beta-D-glucoside and 3,5-O-discaffeoylquinc acid was found in samples of Taiju. The yield of the four kinds of Hangbaiju increased obviously as the collection time deferred. Considering the functional constituents, yield and harvesting stage, the stage of Taiju is the best harvesting time.
