ABSTRACT

Advancements in biochar activating persulfate advanced oxidation processes (PS-AOP), have gained significant attention. However, the understanding of biochar-based catalysts in activating PS remains limited. Herein, biochar (BC) and N-doped biochar (NBC) were synthesized from hemp for activating PS to treat tetracycline (TC) wastewater and analyzed their mechanisms separately. Surprisingly, N-doped in biochar leads to a change in the activation mechanism of PS. The BC-PS system operates mainly through a radical pathway, advantageous for treating soil organic pollution (68%) with pH adaptability (less than 10% variation). Nevertheless, the NBC-PS system primarily employs an electron transfer non-radical pathway, demonstrating stability (only 7% performance degradation over four cycles) and enhanced resistance to anionic interference (less than 10% variation) in organic wastewater treatment. This study provides a technical reference and theoretical foundation for enhancing biochar activation of PS in the removal of organic pollutants from aquatic and terrestrial environments.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of physical exercise on sleep quality and the mediating effect of smartphone use behavior in college students. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was adopted. An online survey of 5,075 college students was conducted using the Physical Activity Rating Scale-3, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Mobile Phone Addiction Tendency Scale. RESULTS: The sleep quality of college students was poor, and the proportion of college students with good sleep quality was 23.567%. A significant correlation existed between sleep quality and physical exercise (r = -0.159, P < 0.001) and mobile phone addiction (r = 0.355, P < 0.001). Physical exercise can predict sleep quality in college students (ß = -0.011, P < 0.001). Smartphone use plays a part in mediating the process by which physical exercise affects sleep quality. CONCLUSION: Chinese college students have poor sleep quality. Physical exercise and smartphone use behavior are important factors affecting the sleep quality of college students. Physical exercise can directly predict the sleep quality of college students and can predict the sleep quality of college students through the mediating effect of smartphone use behavior.

ABSTRACT

The persistence and wide dispersion of antibiotics have a severe impact on the ecological environment. Developing an effective method with universal applicability to remove pollutants is pretty necessary. Herein, a bimetallic oxides (Co3V2O8) heterogeneous material was successfully prepared and used to activate the persulfate (PS) for purification of tetracycline (TC) wastewater. By exploring the reaction conditions and influencing factors, the removal rate of 50 mg⋅L-1 TC reached 87.1% by Co3V2O8/PS system, and the reaction rate constant was up to 0.0271 min-1. As a highly efficient catalyst for the activation of PS, Co3V2O8/PS system produces radicals of SO4•-, •OH, •O2- and 1O2 in the reaction process due to the Co(II) and V(IV) exchange electrons with S2O82- and O2. Simultaneously, the internal electron exchange occurs between Co(II)/Co(III) and V(IV)/V(V), which stabilizes the content of Co(II) and V(IV). This work provides a novel activator for PS activation to degrade contaminants and contributes to a better understanding of the PS activation mechanism by transition compound.

ABSTRACT

Although many literatures have shown that prolonged high-dose administration of corticosteroids is hazardous and not indicated to therapy acute lung injury (ALI), there is little information on the harmful effect of prolonged high-dose corticosteroids in acute lung injury. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of prolonged high-dose methylprednisolone (MPL) on ALI and improve knowledge regarding the appropriate use of corticosteroids in ALI. The different doses of MPL (3, 30, 180mg·kg(-1)) were given via tail vein injection 1h after the first time LPS administration and were daily administrated for 14days. Lung tissues and lavage samples were isolated for biochemical determinations and histological measurements at 12h, 7days and 14days after LPS administration. Single administration of 180mg·kg(-1) MPL decreased the lung injury score, wet-to-dry ratio, the total cell numbers and level of procollagen type III in BALF at 12h after LPS challenge. However, prolonged therapy with 180mg·kg (-1) MPL for 7days and 14days decreased the number of AMs in BALF and increased the above-mentioned indexes. These results suggested that the prolonged high-dose MPL has harmful effects to treat LPS-induced ALI in rats.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To assess the value of fetal chromosomal abnormality screening by a maternal serum test plus fetal nasal bone length in second trimester (parallel test). METHODS: From January 2009 to December 2010, fetal nasal bone was measured at 19 - 22 weeks gestation in 6173 unselected cases. Karyotyping was performed in cases with a high risk for maternal serum test and/or abnormal fetal nasal bone length. All cases were followed-up postnatally. RESULTS: Nasal bone was assessed successfully in 5607 cases (90.83%). Normally it is increases with gestational age. The detection rate of chromosomal abnormality was 69.64% by maternal serum test, 79.76% by maternal serum test plus hypoplastic nasal bone and 83.93% by maternal serum test plus shortened nasal bone. CONCLUSION: Fetal nasal bone hypoplasia is closely correlated with chromosomal abnormality. And sonographic evaluation of nasal bone may be a useful tool for screening chromosomal abnormality. The combination of maternal serum test and fetal nasal bone length will boost the detection rate of chromosomal abnormality.

ABSTRACT

In the femoral head necrosis model rabbit induced by endotoxin combined with methylprenisolone, the dynamical changes of plasma TXB2 and 6-keto-PGF1alpha contents were observed. As a result, microscopic examination showed that in the model group, bone trabeculae became fine, empty bone lacunae increased, and osteoblasts in number decreased; the ratio of TXB2 and 6-keto-PGF1alpha was out of balance, and these changes worsened gradually with the lapse of time; Compound Sheng Mai Cheng Gu Capsules could reverse femoral head necrosis, protect the vascular endothelial cells, recover the balance of TXB2 and 6-keto-PGF1alpha. It is concluded that the hormone-induced femoral head necrosis is closely related with blood stasis, and that the Chinese drugs for activating blood circulation and removing blood stasis can prevent the femoral head from development of necrosis.
