ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Dual-person inspection in IVF laboratories cannot fully avoid mix-ups or embryo transfer errors, and data transcription or entry is time-consuming and redundant, often leading to delays in completing medical records. METHODS: This study introduced a workflow-based RFID tag witnessing and real-time information entry platform for addressing these challenges. To assess its potential in reducing mix-ups, we conducted a simulation experiment in semen preparation to analyze its error correction rate. Additionally, we evaluated its impact on work efficiency, specifically in operation and data entry. Furthermore, we compared the cycle costs between paper labels and RFID tags. Finally, we retrospectively analyzed clinical outcomes of 20,424 oocyte retrieval cycles and 15,785 frozen embryo transfer cycles, which were divided into paper label and RFID tag groups. RESULTS: The study revealed that comparing to paper labels, RFID tag witnessing corrected 100% of tag errors, didn't affect gamete/embryo operations, and notably shorten the time of entering data, but the cycle cost of RFID tags was significantly higher. However, no significant differences were observed in fertilization, embryo quality, blastocyst rates, clinical pregnancy, and live birth rates between two groups. CONCLUSIONS: RFID tag witnessing doesn't negatively impact gamete/embryo operation, embryo quality and pregnancy outcomes, but it potentially reduces the risk of mix-ups or errors. Despite highly increased cost, integrating RFID tag witnessing with real-time information entry can remarkably decrease the data entry time, substantially improving the work efficiency. This workflow-based management platform also enhances operational safety, ensures medical informational integrity, and boosts embryologist's confidence.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The use of machine learning(ML) methods would improve the diagnosis of small airway dysfunction(SAD) in subjects with chronic respiratory symptoms and preserved pulmonary function(PPF). This paper evaluated the performance of several ML algorithms associated with the impulse oscillometry(IOS) analysis to aid in the diagnostic of respiratory changes in SAD. We also find out the best configuration for this task. METHODS: IOS and spirometry were measured in 280 subjects, including a healthy control group (n = 78), a group with normal spirometry (n = 158) and a group with abnormal spirometry (n = 44). Various supervised machine learning (ML) algorithms and feature selection strategies were examined, such as Support Vector Machines (SVM), Random Forests (RF), Adaptive Boosting (ADABOOST), Navie Bayesian (BAYES), and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN). RESULTS: The first experiment of this study demonstrated that the best oscillometric parameter (BOP) was R5, with an AUC value of 0.642, when comparing a healthy control group(CG) with patients in the group without lung volume-defined SAD(PPFN). The AUC value of BOP in the control group was 0.769 compared with patients with spirometry defined SAD(PPFA) in the PPF population. In the second experiment, the ML technique was used. In CGvsPPFN, RF and ADABOOST had the best diagnostic results (AUC = 0.914, 0.915), with significantly higher accuracy compared to BOP (p < 0.01). In CGvsPPFA, RF and ADABOOST had the best diagnostic results (AUC = 0.951, 0.971) and significantly higher diagnostic accuracy (p < 0.01). In the third, fourth and fifth experiments, different feature selection techniques allowed us to find the best IOS parameters (R5, (R5-R20)/R5 and Fres). The results demonstrate that the performance of ADABOOST remained essentially unaltered following the application of the feature selector, whereas the diagnostic accuracy of the remaining four classifiers (RF, SVM, BAYES, and KNN) is marginally enhanced. CONCLUSIONS: IOS combined with ML algorithms provide a new method for diagnosing SAD in subjects with chronic respiratory symptoms and PPF. The present study's findings provide evidence that this combination may help in the early diagnosis of respiratory changes in these patients.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effet of one-time one-abutment placement on peri-implant tissues. METHODS: Thirty-five patients with single posterior loss were collected, who received definitive abutment at the moment of implant placement. One day and after 1 year of implant loading, radiographic assessment of marginal bone level changes and clinical status of peri-implant soft tissues were conducted. Plaque index, pocket depth as well as sulcus bleeding index were assessed. RESULTS: During 1 year follow-up period after loading, no implant failure was observed. The mean marginal bone loss of implants were (0.225±0.113) mm mesially and (0.439±0.123) mm distally. Standard periodontal probes were used to measure plaque index, probing depth, and gingival crevicular bleeding index immediately after repair and 1 year later. CONCLUSIONS: In the posterior region, one-time one-abutment placement may better protect peri-implant tissues as an ideal treatment protocol.

BACKGROUND: Colon cancer (CC) occurrence and progression are considerably influenced by the tumor microenvironment. However, the exact underlying regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. AIM: To investigate immune infiltration-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in CC and specifically explored the role and potential molecular mechanisms of complement factor I (CFI). METHODS: Immune infiltration-associated DEGs were screened for CC using bioinformatics. Quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was used to examine hub DEGs expression in the CC cell lines. Stable CFI-knockdown HT29 and HCT116 cell lines were constructed, and the diverse roles of CFI in vitro were assessed using CCK-8, 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine, wound healing, and transwell assays. Hematoxylin and eosin staining and immunohistochemistry staining were employed to evaluate the influence of CFI on the tumorigenesis of CC xenograft models constructed using BALB/c male nude mice. Key proteins associated with glycolysis and the Wnt pathway were measured using western blotting. RESULTS: Six key immune infiltration-related DEGs were screened, among which the expression of CFI, complement factor B, lymphoid enhancer binding factor 1, and SRY-related high-mobility-group box 4 was upregulated, whereas that of fatty acid-binding protein 1, and bone morphogenic protein-2 was downregulated. Furthermore, CFI could be used as a diagnostic biomarker for CC. Functionally, CFI silencing inhibited CC cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and tumor growth. Mechanistically, CFI knockdown downregulated the expression of key glycolysis-related proteins (glucose transporter type 1, hexokinase 2, lactate dehydrogenase A, and pyruvate kinase M2) and the Wnt pathway-related proteins (ß-catenin and c-Myc). Further investigation indicated that CFI knockdown inhibited glycolysis in CC by blocking the Wnt/ß-catenin/c-Myc pathway. CONCLUSION: The findings of the present study demonstrate that CFI plays a crucial role in CC development by influencing glycolysis and the Wnt/ß-catenin/c-Myc pathway, indicating that it could serve as a promising target for therapeutic intervention in CC.

ABSTRACT

Liver injury significantly affects a patient's health and quality of life. However, timely and convenient diagnosis of this disease via whole blood detection remains challenging due to the lack of user-friendly and fast readout blood test methods. Herein, we developed such a method for the swift auxiliary diagnosis of liver injury via whole blood detection using a customed point-of-care testing (POCT) system consisting of a biothiols-activatable chemiluminescent probe and a hand-held POCT device. Biothiols served as the target to build the activable chemiluminescence probe due to their abnormal level in liver injury. Compared with fluorescent and electrical POCTs, this method is more convenient and has strong universality. By incorporating cyclodextrin via host-guest chemistry, we intensified chemiluminescence while mitigating chemical hemolysis caused by the dissolution of organic molecules, making this system suitable for whole blood analysis. Preliminary assessments in aqueous solutions, living cells, and mouse models confirmed its sensitivity, reliability, and feasibility. Simply mixing blood with the probe for 30 min yielded a clear signal readout within 15 s on the POCT device. Utilizing this portable detector, the reduced biothiol level was tested in 18 liver injury patient blood samples, and the results were similar to those measured by a commercial kit and in vivo imaging system. Thus, this work provides a universal platform for the fast and convenient detection of other biomarkers in whole blood samples and opens up possibilities for the rapid clinical diagnosis of diseases, enabling patients to conduct home self-examinations with ease.

ABSTRACT

Nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat (NLR) proteins are crucial intracellular immune receptors in plants, responsible for detecting invading pathogens and initiating defense responses. While previous studies on the evolution and function of NLR genes were mainly limited to land plants, the evolutionary trajectory and immune-activating character of NLR genes in algae remain less explored. In this study, genome-wide NLR gene analysis was conducted on 44 chlorophyte species across seven classes and seven charophyte species across five classes. A few but variable number of NLR genes, ranging from one to 20, were identified in five chlorophytes and three charophytes, whereas no NLR gene was identified from the remaining algal genomes. Compared with land plants, algal genomes possess fewer or usually no NLR genes, implying that the expansion of NLR genes in land plants can be attributed to their adaptation to the more complex terrestrial pathogen environments. Through phylogenetic analysis, domain composition analysis, and conserved motifs profiling of the NBS domain, we detected shared and lineage-specific features between NLR genes in algae and land plants, supporting the common origin and continuous evolution of green plant NLR genes. Immune-activation assays revealed that both TNL and RNL proteins from green algae can elicit hypersensitive responses in Nicotiana benthamiana, indicating the molecular basis for immune activation has emerged in the early evolutionary stage of different types of NLR proteins. In summary, the results from this study suggest that NLR proteins may have taken a role as intracellular immune receptors in the common ancestor of green plants.

Background: As an autoimmune disease, antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) often affects multiple organs, including the ocular system. This study aims to investigate differences in retinal thickness (RT) and retinal superficial vascular density (SVD) between patients with AAV and healthy controls (HCs) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Currently, these differences are not clear. Methods: A total of 16 AAV individuals (32 eyes) and 16 HCs (32 eyes) were recruited to this cross-sectional study conducted in the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University from June 2023 to September 2023. The study protocol conformed with the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki (as revised in 2013). Each image observed by OCTA was divided into 9 regions using the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) subzones as a guide. Results: In the full layer, the RT of AAV patients was found to be significantly reduced in the inner superior (IS, P<0.001), outer superior (OS, P=0.003), inner temporal (IT, P=0.003), and outer temporal (OT, P<0.001) regions; inner RT was significantly lower in the IS (P=0.006), OS (P<0.001), inner nasal (IN, P=0.005), outer nasal (ON, P<0.001), and center (C, P=0.01) regions than that in HCs. Outer RT of AAV patients showed a reduction in the IS (P<0.001), as well as IT (P=0.008), and OT (P<0.001) regions. No statistically significant differences were seen in the different subregions in other different layers (P>0.05). Only the inner inferior (II) and outer inferior (OI) regions of SVD in AAV patients did not differ significantly from controls. All other regions showed a reduction in SVD. The details are as follows: IS (P<0.001), OS (P<0.001), IT (P=0.005), OT (P<0.001), IN (P<0.001), ON (P<0.001), and C (P=0.003). According to receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, the full IS region [area under the curve (AUC): 0.8892, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.8041-0.9742, P<0.001] had the highest diagnostic value for AAV-induced reduction in RT. The IS (AUC: 0.9121, 95% CI: 0.8322-0.9920, P<0.001) region was also the most sensitive to changes in SVD of AAV individuals. In addition, we found that SVD in the IN region (r=-0.4224, 95% CI: -0.6779 to -0.0757, P=0.02) as well as mean visual acuity (r=-0.3922, 95% CI: -0.6579 to -0.0397, P=0.03) of AAV patients were negatively correlated with disease duration. However, we did not find an association between SVD and RT in this study. Conclusions: The findings from OCTA indicated a reduction in RT and SVD among patients with AAV. OCTA allows for the evaluation of AAV-related ocular lesions and holds promise for monitoring of disease progression through regular evaluations.

ABSTRACT

Polyhedral boranes have potential applications in medicine and material science due to their unique structure and stability. However, tedious and low-yield synthetic methods limited their application. Herein, we have developed a facile large-scale synthetic method for M2[B12H12] (M = Na, K) by the reaction of MBH4 with N,N-dipropylaniline borane in diglyme at 120 or 140 °C in up to 88% yield. The mechanistic studies indicated that intermediates, such as [B3H8]- and [B9H14]-, were formed in the formation process of [B12H12]2- anion, similar to previously reported. The formation of B2H6 from the N,N-dipropylaniline borane adducts is most important. The developed method avoided using toxic materials, with high yield, easily scaled up, raw materials are readily available. Additionally, the starting material, N,N-dipropylaniline, could be repeatedly used at least three times with similar yields, which is an economical way to facilitate industrial synthesis. It is believed that this method will support further application of Na2[B12H12] and K2[B12H12] as solid electrolytes for an all-solid-state batteries.

Soil is indispensable for agricultural production but has been seriously polluted by cadmium and salt in recent years. Many crops are suffering from this, including rapeseed, the third largest global oilseed crop. However, genes simultaneously related to both cadmium and salt stress have not been extensively reported yet. In this study, BnaA10.WRKY75 was screened from previous RNA-seq data related to cadmium and salt stress and further analyses including sequence comparison, GUS staining, transformation and qRT-PCR were conducted to confirm its function. GUS staining and qRT-PCR results indicated BnaA10.WRKY75 was induced by CdCl2 and NaCl treatment. Sequence analysis suggested BnaA10.WRKY75 belongs to Group IIc of the WRKY gene family and transient expression assay showed it was a nuclear localized transcription factor. BnaA10.WRKY75-overexpressing Arabidopsis and rapeseed plants accumulated more H2O2 and O2- and were more sensitive to CdCl2 and NaCl treatment compared with untransformed plants, which may be caused by the downregulation of BnaC03.CAT2. Our study reported that BnaA10.WRKY75 increases sensitivity to cadmium and salt stress by disrupting the balance of reactive oxygen species both in Arabidopsis and rapeseed. The results support the further understanding of the mechanisms underlying cadmium and salt tolerance and provide BnaA10.WRKY75 as a valuable gene for rapeseed abiotic stress breeding.

ABSTRACT

With the continuous increasing threat of drug-resistant bacteria induced cutaneous wound infections, there is a growing demand for novel effective antibiotics-alternative antibacterial strategies for clinical anti-infective therapy. Here, we report the fabrication and antibacterial efficacy of Ag2S@H-CeO2 photonic nanocomposites with rough surface through in-situ growth of Ag2S nanoparticles on CeO2 hollow spheres. With excellent photothermal property and peroxidase-like activity, as well as increased bacterial adhesion, the photonic nanocomposites demonstrated a broad-spectrum synergistic antibacterial effect against Gram-positive, Gram-positive bacteria and fungi as well biofilm in vitro. Significantly, the nanocomposites can effectively eradicate drug-resistant bacteria such as Gram-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Gram-negative extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL E. coli). Notably, in vivo assessments validated its synergistic therapeutic potential in the treatment of MRSA-infected cutaneous wounds, all while maintaining excellent biosafety and biocompatibility. Our study offers a competitive and promising strategy for the development of a multifunctional synergistic antibacterial platform poised to effectively treat drug-resistant bacteria-infected cutaneous wounds.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the levels of 12 kinds of cytokines in seminal plasma and their correlations with routine semen parameters. METHODS: The remaining seminal plasma samples of 134 patients undergoing routine semen examination were collected for detecting cytokines. The parameters for sperm concentration, percentage of progressively motile sperm (PR), and motility were analyzed by a computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) system. According to the results of sperm concentration, PR and motility, 134 patients were divided into the normal routine semen parameters group, oligoasthenospermia group and azoospermia group. The levels of 12 kinds of cytokines in seminal plasma, including interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12P70, IL-17, interferin (IFN)-α, IFN-γ, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, were detected by flow cytometry. Two seminal plasma samples were detected for 10 times, respectively, to calculate the coefficients of variation (CV) of each cytokine. The linear range of each cytokine was measured using the standard, and the correlation coefficient (r) was calculated. RESULTS: The r2 of 12 kinds of cytokines detected by flow cytometry were all greater than 0.99. The reproducibility of 2 seminal plasma samples showed that the CVs of all cytokines were lower than 15 % except for TNF-α in sample 1 (15.15 %). Seminal plasma IL-6 levels were negatively correlated with semen volume (P < 0.01). Seminal plasma IL-5 levels were positively correlated with sperm concentration (P < 0.01). Seminal plasma IL-8 levels were negatively correlated with sperm motility (P < 0.01). Seminal plasma IL-8, IL-17 and IL-12P70 levels were negatively correlated with sperm PR (P < 0.05). In addition to the significant negative correlation between IL-5 and IL-17 (P < 0.05), there was a significant positive correlation between the majority of other cytokines. The levels of seminal plasma IL-17 and IL-12P70 in the oligoasthenospermia group and IL-1ß and IL-12P70 in the azoospermia group were significantly higher than those in the normal routine semen parameters group (P ≤ 0.05), while the levels of IL-10 in the azoospermia group were significantly lower than that in the normal routine semen parameters group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: There are certain correlations between seminal plasma cytokines and routine semen parameters and strong correlations between different seminal plasma cytokines, suggesting that the imbalance between seminal plasma cytokines may affect sperm quality. However, it still needs to be further confirmed by large samples and multi-center clinical studies and related basic researches.

Bacground/purpose: Endodontically treated teeth are more prone to vertical root fracture with the mechanical property changes to some extent during root canal treatment. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a bioceramic sealer on the mechanical properties of tooth roots. Materials and methods: Dentin discs were dried by two different methods (ethanol drying and paper points drying) and then filled with a BC sealer named iRoot SP. SEM and EDS were used to analyze the newly formed minerals in dentin tubules. Elastic modulus and hardness of the secondary dentin in areas proximal to the primary dentin (PD-SD) and areas proximal to canal or iRoot SP (SD-C/SD-iRoot SP) were measured using nanoindentation technique. The compressive strength of roots filled with iRoot SP were tested by compressive loading test. Results: (1) Penetration and mineralization: Paper points drying was more conducive to iRoot SP adhesion, spreading and penetration into the dentin tubules than 95% ethanol drying. (2) Micromechanical properties: After filling root canal with iRoot SP, the elastic modulus and hardness of SD-iRoot SP were higher than those of PD-SD (P = 0.001 and P = 0.000). (3) Fracture resistance: The compressive strength of the roots filled with iRoot SP was not significantly different from that of the roots unprepared and unfilled (P = 0.957), but was higher than that of the roots prepared and unfilled (P = 0.009). Conclusion: Excessive drying (95% ethanol drying method) is not conducive to the penetration and mineralization of the BC sealer iRoot SP into dentin tubules. The good bioactivity of iRoot SP was responsible for increasing the elastic modulus and hardness of dentin, which strengthened the prepared roots.

The heavy metal cadmium (Cd) is a toxic and bioaccumulative metal that can be enriched in the tissues and organs of living organisms through the digestive tract. However, more research is needed to determine whether food-sourced Cd affects the homeostasis of host gut microflora. In this study, the snail Bradybaena ravida (Benson) was used as a model organism fed with mulberry leaves spiked with different concentrations of Cd (0, 0.052, 0.71, and 1.94 mg kg-1). By combining 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing with biochemical characterization, it was found that there were increases in the overall microbial diversity and abundances of pathogenic bacteria such as Corynebacterium, Enterococcus, Aeromonas, and Rickettsia in the gut of B. ravida after exposure to Cd. However, the abundances of potential Cd-resistant microbes in the host's gut, including Sphingobacterium, Lactococcus, and Chryseobacterium, decreased with increasing Cd concentrations in the mulberry leaves. In addition, there was a significant reduction in activities of energy, nutrient metabolism, and antioxidant enzymes for gut microbiota of snails treated with high concentrations of Cd compared to those with low ones. These findings highlight the interaction of snail gut microbiota with Cd exposure, indicating the potential role of terrestrial animal gut microbiota in environmental monitoring through rapid recognition and response to environmental pollution.

Precise and reliable monitoring of DNA adenine methyltransferase (Dam) activity is essential for disease diagnosis and biological analysis. However, existing techniques for detecting Dam activity often rely on specific DNA recognition probes that are susceptible to DNA degradation and exhibit limited target sensitivity and specificity. In this study, we designed and engineered a stable and dynamic DNA nanodevice called the double-loop interlocked DNA circuit (DOOR) that enables the sensitive and selective monitoring of Dam activity in complex biological environments. The DOOR incorporates two interlocked specialized sequences: a palindromic sequence for Dam identification and an initiator sequence for signal amplification. In the presence of Dam, the DOOR is cleaved by double-stranded DNA phosphodiesterase I endonuclease, generating massive double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) units. These units can self-assemble into a long dsDNA scaffold, thereby enhancing the subsequent reaction kinetics. The dsDNA scaffold further triggers a hyperbranched hybrid chain reaction to produce a fluorescent 3D DNA nanonet, enabling more precise monitoring of the Dam activity. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study explores how permissive hypercapnia, a key aspect of lung protective ventilation, impacts postoperative delirium in elderly patients following thoracic surgery. METHODS: A single-center trial at The Second Hospital of Anhui Medical University involved 136 elderly patients undergoing thoracoscopic esophageal cancer resection. Randomly assigned to maintain PaCO2 35-45 mmHg (group N) or 46-55 mmHg (group H). Primary outcome: postoperative delirium (POD) incidence 1-3 days post-surgery. Secondary endpoints included monitoring rSO2, cardiovascular parameters (MAP, HR), pH, OI, and respiratory parameters (VT, RR, Cdyn, PIP) at specific time points. Perioperative tests assessed CRP/ALB ratio (CAR) and systemic inflammatory index (SII). VAS scores were documented for three postoperative days. RESULTS: Postoperatively, group H showed significantly lower POD incidence than group N (7.4% vs. 19.1%, P = 0.043). Group H exhibited higher PaCO2 and rSO2 during surgery (P < 0.05). Patients in group H maintained better cardiovascular stability with higher blood pressure and lower heart rate on T2-4 (P < 0.05). Respiratory parameters were more stable in group H with lower TV, RR, and PIP, and higher Cdyn during OLV (P < 0.05). Group H had lower pH and OI at T2-4 (P < 0.05). CRP and CAR levels rose less in group H on the first day and one week later (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Maintaining PaCO2 at 46-55 mmHg reduces POD incidence, possibly by enhancing rSO2 levels and stabilizing intraoperative respiration/circulation.

ABSTRACT

Background: Growing demand exists for high-quality Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) care, particularly through Nurse-led TCM clinics (TCM-NLCs). Nurses with extensive experience in TCM departments represent a potential workforce for this healthcare model. This qualitative study aims to investigate the willingness of these candidates to engage in TCM-NLCs, with a specific focus on their main concerns and apprehensions when facing new challenges. Methods: Individual semi-structured face to face interviews were conducted with senior nurses from two TCM hospitals in Shanghai. Each participant had a minimum of three years of work experience in a TCM related department. Conventional qualitative content analysis was utilized. Results: Fourteen participants were interviewed and data saturation was achieved. Nurses exhibited strong interest in practicing in TCM-NLCs. They believed that such innovative TCM nursing service model not only extends nursing role, provides greater empowerment and opportunities for professional development but also meets patients' diverse healthcare needs, reduces reliance on other healthcare providers such as doctors, and increases hospital revenue. However, challenges such as deficiencies in evidence-based TCM nursing education, the absence of standardized practice guidelines, and limited prescriptive privileges were identified as primary obstacles to engaging in TCM-NLCs practice, potentially undermining the specialization of this advanced nursing practice model. Conclusion: Although the nurses interviewed were highly motivated, they generally lacked confidence to practice independently in TCM-NLCs. A pressing priority is to address their concerns by providing appropriate resources as well as education and policy support to enhance their competency and ensure their practice autonomy, therefore building a more qualified pool of professionals for advanced TCM nursing practice.

ABSTRACT

Many infections, including malaria, are associated with an increase in autoantibodies (AAbs). Prior studies have reported an association between genetic markers of susceptibility to autoimmune disease and resistance to malaria, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Here, we performed a longitudinal study of children and adults (n = 602) in Mali and found that high levels of plasma AAbs before the malaria season independently predicted a reduced risk of clinical malaria in children during the ensuing malaria season. Baseline AAb seroprevalence increased with age and asymptomatic Plasmodium falciparum infection. We found that AAbs purified from the plasma of protected individuals inhibit the growth of blood-stage parasites and bind P. falciparum proteins that mediate parasite invasion. Protected individuals had higher plasma immunoglobulin G (IgG) reactivity against 33 of the 123 antigens assessed in an autoantigen microarray. This study provides evidence in support of the hypothesis that a propensity toward autoimmunity offers a survival advantage against malaria.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to develop a real-time risk prediction model for extrauterine growth retardation (EUGR). A total of 2514 very preterm infants were allocated into a training set and an external validation set. The most appropriate independent variables were screened using univariate analysis and Lasso regression with tenfold cross-validation, while the prediction model was designed using binary multivariate logistic regression. A visualization of the risk variables was created using a nomogram, while the calibration plot and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to calibrate the prediction model. Clinical efficacy was assessed using the decision curve analysis (DCA) curves. Eight optimal predictors that namely birth weight, small for gestation age (SGA), hypertensive disease complicating pregnancy (HDCP), gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), multiple births, cumulative duration of fasting, growth velocity and postnatal corticosteroids were introduced into the logistic regression equation to construct the EUGR prediction model. The area under the ROC curve of the training set and the external verification set was 83.1% and 84.6%, respectively. The calibration curve indicate that the model fits well. The DCA curve shows that the risk threshold for clinical application is 0-95% in both set. Introducing Birth weight, SGA, HDCP, GDM, Multiple births, Cumulative duration of fasting, Growth velocity and Postnatal corticosteroids into the nomogram increased its usefulness for predicting EUGR risk in very preterm infants.

ABSTRACT

The development of short-wavelength nonlinear optical (NLO) materials is indispensable and urgently required for further applications. Halides have been disregarded as potential NLO materials with deep-ultraviolet (DUV) cutoff edges due to their weak second-harmonic generation (SHG) response and poor birefringence. Here, two novel and isostructural halides, KBa3M2F14Cl (M = Zr (KBZFC), Hf (KBHFC)), possess structures that are formed by isolated MF7 monocapped triangular prisms and dissociative K+, Ba2+, and Cl- ions. Compared with reported metal halides that are transparent to the DUV region, KBZFC and KBHFC possess the strongest SHG responses (approximately 1, 0.9 × KH2PO4), which are contributed by the synergistic effect of MF7 (M = Zr, Hf) groups, Ba2+ cations, and Cl- ions. The zero-dimensional structures favour sufficient birefringences (0.12, 0.10 @ 1064 nm) for phase-matchable (PM) behaviours. The discovery of KBZFC and KBHFC showcases the potential of NLO mixed metal halides transparent to the DUV region.
