ABSTRACT

As modern humans ventured out of Africa and dispersed around the world, they faced novel environmental challenges that led to geographic adaptations including skin colour. Over the long history of human evolution, skin colour has changed dramatically, showing tremendous diversity across different geographical regions, for example, the majority of individuals from the expansive lands of Africa have darker skin, whereas the majority of people from Eurasia exhibit lighter skin. What adaptations did lighter skin confer upon modern humans as they migrated from Africa to Eurasia? What genetic mechanisms underlie the diversity of skin colour observed in different populations? In recent years, scientists have gradually gained a deeper understanding of the interactions between pigmentation gene and skin colour through population-based genomic studies of different groups around the world, particularly in East Asia and Africa. In this review, we summarize our current understanding of 26 skin colour-related pigmentation genes and 48 SNPs that influence skin colour. Important pigmentation genes across three major populations are described in detail: MFSD12, SLC24A5, PDPK1 and DDB1/CYB561A3/TMEM138 influence skin colour in African populations; OCA2, KITLG, SLC24A2, GNPAT and PAH are key to the evolution of skin pigmentation in East Asian populations; and SLC24A5, SLC45A2, TYR, TYRP1, ASIP, MC1R and IRF4 significantly contribute to the lightening of skin colour in European populations. We summarized recent findings in genomic studies of skin colour in populations that implicate diverse geographic environments, local adaptation among populations, gene flow and multi-gene interactions as factors influencing skin colour diversity.

ABSTRACT

Thermophilic anaerobic digestion (TAD) represents a promising biotechnology for both methane energy production and waste stream treatment. However, numerous critical microorganisms and their metabolic characteristics involved in this process remain unidentified due to the limitations of culturable isolates. This study investigated the phylogenetic composition and potential metabolic traits of bacteria and methanogenic archaea in a TAD system using culture-independent metagenomics. Predominant microorganisms identified in the stable phase of TAD included hydrogenotrophic methanogens (Methanothermobacter and Methanosarcina) and hydrogen-producing bacteria (Coprothermobacter, Acetomicrobium, and Defluviitoga). Nine major metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) associated with the dominant genera were selected to infer their metabolic potentials. Genes related to thermal resistance were widely found in all nine major MAGs, such as the molecular chaperone genes, Clp protease gene, and RNA polymerase genes, which may contribute to their predominance under thermophilic condition. Thermophilic temperatures may increase the hydrogen partial pressure of Coprothermobacter, Acetomicrobium, and Defluviitoga, subsequently altering the primary methanogenesis pathway from acetoclastic pathway to hydrogenotrophic pathway in the TAD. Consequently, genes encoding the hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis pathway were the most abundant in the recovered archaeal MAGs. The potential interaction between hydrogen-producing bacteria and hydrogenotrophic methanogens may play critical roles in TAD processes.

ABSTRACT

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) have garnered significant attention within the realm of rechargeable batteries owing to their distinctive advantages, which encompass diverse structural attributes, customizable compositions, entropy-driven stabilization effects, and remarkable superionic conductivity. Despite the brilliance of HEOs in energy conversion and storage applications, there is still lacking a comprehensive review for both entry-level and experienced researchers, which succinctly encapsulates the present status and the challenges inherent to HEOs, spanning structural features, intrinsic properties, prevalent synthetic methodologies, and diversified applications in rechargeable batteries. Within this review, the endeavor is to distill the structural characteristics, ionic conductivity, and entropy stabilization effects, explore the practical applications of HEOs in the realm of rechargeable batteries (lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and lithium-sulfur batteries), including anode and cathode materials, electrolytes, and electrocatalysts. The review seeks to furnish an overview of the evolving landscape of HEOs-based cell component materials, shedding light on the progress made and the hurdles encountered, as well as serving as the guidance for HEOs compositions design and optimization strategy to enhance the reversible structural stability, electrical properties, and electrochemical performance of rechargeable batteries in the realm of energy storage and conversion.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, the prevalence of myopia has gradually increased, and it has become a significant global public health problem in the 21st century, posing a serious challenge to human eye health. Currently, it is confirmed that the development of myopia is attributed to the combined action of genes and environmental factors. Thus, elucidating the risk factors and pathogenesis of myopia is of great significance for the prevention and control of myopia. To elucidate the impact of gene-environment interaction on myopia, we used the Pubmed database to search for literature related to myopia. Search terms are as follows: myopia, genes, environmental factors, gene-environment interaction, and treatment. This paper reviews the effects of gene and environmental interaction on myopia.

ABSTRACT

The rapid advancement of modern communication technologies necessitates the development of generalized multi-access frameworks and the continuous implementation of rate splitting, augmented with semantic awareness. This trend, coupled with the mounting pressure on wireless services, underscores the need for intelligent approaches to radio signal propagation. In response to these challenges, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) have garnered significant attention for their ability to control data transmission systems in a goal-oriented and dynamic manner. This innovation is largely attributed to equitable resource allocation and the dynamic enhancement of network performance. However, the integration of rate-splitting multi-access (RSMA) architecture with semantic considerations imposes stringent requirements on IRS platforms to ensure seamless connectivity and broad coverage for a diverse user base without interference. Semantic communications hinge on a knowledge base-a centralized repository of integrated information related to the transmitted data-which becomes critically important in multi-antenna scenarios. This article proposes a novel set of design strategies for RSMA-IRS systems, enabled by reconfigurable intelligent surface synergizing with semantic communication principles. An experimental analysis is presented, demonstrating the effectiveness of these design guidelines in the context of Beyond 5G/6G communication systems. The RSMA-IRS model, infused with semantic communication, offers a promising solution for future wireless networks. Performance evaluations of the proposed approach reveal that, despite an increase in the number of users, the delay in the RSMA-IRS framework incorporating semantics is 2.94% less than that of a RSMA-IRS system without semantic integration.

ABSTRACT

Rechargeable aluminum batteries (RABs) are a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage, attributing to the abundant reserves, low cost, intrinsic safety, and high theoretical capacity of Al. However, the cathode materials reported thus far still face challenges such as limited capacity, sluggish kinetics, and undesirable cycle life. Herein, we propose an organic cathode benzo[i] benzo[6,7] quinoxalino [2,3-a] benzo [6,7] quinoxalino [2,3-c] phenazine-5,8,13,16,21,24-hexaone (BQQPH) for RABs. The six C=O and six C=N redox active sites in each molecule enable BQQPH to deliver a record ultra-high capacity of 413 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1. Encouragingly, the intermolecular hydrogen bonding network and π-π stacking interactions endow BQQPH with robust structural stability and minimal solubility, enabling an ultra-long lifetime of 100,000 cycles. Moreover, the electron-withdrawing carbonyl group induces a reduction in the energy level of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and expands the π-conjugated system, which considerably enhances both the discharge voltage and redox kinetics of BQQPH. In situ and ex situ characterizations combined with theoretical calculations unveil that the charge storage mechanism is reversible coordination/dissociation of AlCl2 + with the N and O sites in BQQPH accompanied by 12-electron transfer. This work provides valuable insights into the design of high-performance organic cathode materials for RABs.

The evolution of light-skin pigmentation among Eurasians is considered as an adaptation to the high-latitude environments. East Asians are ideal populations for studying skin color evolution because of the complex environment of East Asia. Here, we report a strong selection signal for the pigmentation gene phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) in light-skinned Han Chinese individuals. The intron mutation rs10778203 in PAH is enriched in East Asians and is significantly associated with skin color of the back of the hand in Han Chinese males (P < 0.05). In vitro luciferase and transcription factor binding assays show that the ancestral allele of rs10778203 could bind to SMAD2 and has a significant enhancer activity for PAH. However, the derived T allele (the major allele in East Asians) of rs10778203 decreases the binding activity of transcription factors and enhancer activity. Meanwhile, the derived T allele of rs10778203 shows a weaker ultraviolet radiation response in A375 cells and zebrafish embryos. Furthermore, rs10778203 decreases melanin production in transgenic zebrafish embryos after ultraviolet B (UVB) treatment. Collectively, PAH is a potential pigmentation gene that regulates skin tanning ability. Natural selection has enriched the adaptive allele, resulting in weakened tanning ability in East Asians, suggesting a unique genetic mechanism for evolutionary skin lightening in East Asians.

ABSTRACT

Highly porous light absorbers are fabricated based on polypyrrole (PPy)-coated carbon nanotube (CNT). Carbon nanotube sponge (CNTS) or carbon nanotube array (CNTA) with three-dimensional (3D) network structure is the framework of porous light absorbers. Both PPy@CNTS and PPy@CNTA composites exhibit excellent light absorption of the full solar spectrum. The CNTS and CNTA with porous structures have extremely large effective surface area for light absorption and for water evaporation that has great practical benefit to the solar-driven vapor generation. The PPy layer on CNT sidewalls significantly improves the hydrophilicity of porous CNTS and CNTA. The good wettability of water on CNT sidewalls makes water transport in porous CNT materials highly efficient. The PPy@CNTS and PPy@CNTA light absorbers achieve high water evaporation rates of 3.35 and 3.41 kg m-2 h-1 , respectively, under 1-sun radiation. The orientation of nano channels in CNTA-based light absorbers also plays an important role in the solar-driven vapor generation. The water transport and vapor escape are more efficient in CNTA-based light absorbers as compared to the CNTS-based light absorbers due to the relatively short path for the water transport and the vapor escape in CNTA-based light absorbers.

ABSTRACT

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with lightweight, high shielding effectiveness, excellent chemical stability, especially minimized secondary electromagnetic pollution, are urgently desired for integrated electronic systems operating in harsh working environments. Here in this study, by systematically engineering and matching the interfacial properties of carbon-based membrane materials, i.e., graphite paper, whisker carbon nanotube paper (WCNT paper), carbon nanotube film (CNT film), bucky paper (BP), and carbon cloth (CC) with three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon nanotube sponge (CNTS), we successfully constructed a series of multifunctional all-carbon EMI shielding materials, which exhibit excellent average shielding effectiveness of over 90 dB with a thickness of about 1 mm and dramatically minimized secondary electromagnetic reflection. Moreover, benefiting from the all-carbon nature and engineered interfaces, our CMC materials also exhibit excellent photothermal and Joule heating performances. These results not only provide guidance for designing advanced multifunctional all-carbon EMI shielding materials but also shed light on the hidden mechanism between interfaces and performances of composite materials.

ABSTRACT

The deterministic generation of individual color centers with defined orientations or types in solid-state systems is paramount for advancements in quantum technologies. Silicon vacancies in 4H-silicon carbide (4H-SiC) can be formed in V1 and V2 types. However, silicon vacancies are typically generated randomly between V1 and V2 types with similar probabilities. Here, we show that the preferred V2 centers can be selectively generated by focused ion beam (FIB) implantation on the m-plane in 4H-SiC. When implantation is on the m-plane (a-plane), the generation probability ratio between V1 and V2 centers increase exponentially (remains constant) with decreasing FIB fluences. With a fluence of 10 ions/spot, the probability to generate V2 centers is seven times higher than V1 centers. Our results represent a critical step toward the deterministic creation of specific defect types.

ABSTRACT

Foaming pretreatment has been proven effective in promoting sludge drying, however, the variation in sludge properties significantly influences the foaming efficiency. Inspired by foam stabilizer of solid particles, Camellia oleifera shells (COS) was screened out from various biomasses as an additive incorporated with the CaO for promoting the sludge foaming. For the introduction of COS, this study analyzed the drying behaviors of foamed sludge, quantified the surface cracks information, characterized the combustion performance, and evaluated the energy consumption. The results indicated that 46.72-50.10% of time could be saved in foaming the sludge to 0.70 g/mL by addition of 3.0 wt% COS. Compared with the original sludge (OS), the 0.70 g/mL foamed sludge saved 47.43% of time for sludge drying at 80 °C, and this value further increased to 53.14% with 3.0 wt% COS addition. Combining the multifractal spectra and drying kinetics analysis, the foaming promoted the formation of complex surface cracks in the warm-up period, while COS further improved the complexity of cracks in the constant rate period, and the shrinkage of isolated sludge blocks in the falling rate period, thus enhanced the moisture diffusion and heat transfer. Furthermore, the appropriate porous structure and additional volatile matters promoted the combustion performance. The 0.90 g/mL foamed sludge with COS presented the lowest activation energy of 180.362 kJ/mol in combustion. Overall, compared with OS, the 0.70 g/mL foamed sludge with COS saved 40.65% energy consumption during the foaming, drying and combustion processes, providing an energy-efficient solution for the sludge treatment and disposal.

ABSTRACT

Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) contained in sludge, such as carbamazepine, may be toxic to microorganisms and affect the biogenesis of methane during anaerobic digestion. In this study, different scales of anaerobic digesters were constructed to investigate the inhibitory effect of carbamazepine. Results showed that carbamazepine reduced methane production by 11.3 % and 62.1 % at concentrations of 0.4 and 2 mg/g TS, respectively. Carbamazepine hindered the dissolution of organic matter and the degradation of protein. Carbamazepine inhibited some fermentative bacteria, especially uncultured Aminicenantales, whose abundance decreased by 9.5-93.4 % under carbamazepine stress. It is worth noting that most prior studies investigated the effects of CECs only based on well-known microorganisms, ignoring the metabolisms of uncultured microorganisms. Genome-predicted metabolic potential suggested that 54 uncultured metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) associated with acidogenesis or acetogenesis. Therein, uncultured Aminicenantales related MAGs were proved to be acetogenic fermenters, their significant reduction may be an important reason for the decrease of methane production under carbamazepine stress. The toxicity of carbamazepine to microorganisms was mainly related to the overproduction of reactive oxygen species. This study elucidates the inhibition mechanism of carbamazepine and emphasizes the indispensable role of uncultured microorganisms in anaerobic digestion.

The Nickel-based catalysts have a good catalytic effect on the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural electrooxidation reaction (HMFOR), but limited by the conversion potential of Ni2+ /Ni3+ , 1.35 V versus RHE, the HMF electrooxidation potential of nickel-based catalysts is generally greater than 1.35 V versus RHE. Considering fluorine has the highest Pauling electronegativity and similar atomic radius of oxygen, the introduction of fluorine into the lattice of metal oxides might promote the adsorption of intermediate species, thus improving the catalytic performance. F is successfully doped into the lattice structure of NiCo2 O4 spinel oxide by the strategy of hydrothermal reaction and low-temperature fluorination. As is confirmed by in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, the introduction of F weakens the interaction force of metal-oxygen covalent bonds of the asymmetric MT -O-MO backbone and improves the valence of Ni in tetrahedra structure, which makes it easier to be oxidized to higher valence active Ni3+ under the action of electric field and promotes the adsorption of OH- , while the decrease of Co valence enhances the adsorption of HMF with the catalyst. Combining the above reasons, F-NiCo2 O4 shows superb electrocatalytic performance with a potential of only 1.297 V versus RHE at a current density of 20 mA cm-2 , which is lower than the most catalyst.

As an important ecological-economic development area in China, scientific understanding of the spatial and temporal changes in eco-environment quality (EEQ) and its drivers in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) is crucial for the effective implementation of ecological protection projects in the YRB. To address the lack of large-scale EEQ assessment in the YRB, this paper uses the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform and the Remote Sensing Ecological Index (RSEI) to investigate the spatial and temporal characteristics of EEQ in the YRB from 2000 to 2020, and to analyze the impact of various factors on the EEQ of the YRB. This study showed that: (1) The overall EEQ of YRB was at the 'good' grade over the past 20 years, showing an increasing trend, with the value changing from 0.70 to 0.77. (2) The YRB's EEQ has positive spatial aggregation characteristics, with the northern part of the Jialing River basin and the Han River basin exhibiting a high-high aggregation type and the upper reaches exhibiting a low-low aggregation type. (3) In the past 20 years, the human activities had a greater impact on the EEQ of the YRB; moreover, all factors had a greater impact on the EEQ than a single factor. The interaction between the biological abundance index and population density had the most effect, with a q-value of 0.737 in 2020.

AIM: To investigate the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on the mitochondria-dependent apoptotic signaling pathway in the ciliary muscle of guinea pigs with negative lens-induced myopia (LIM). METHODS: Guinea pigs were randomly divided into normal control (NC) group, LIM group, LIM+SHAM acupoint (LIM+SHAM) group, and LIM+EA group. Animals in the NC group received no intervention, while those in other three groups were covered with -6.0 diopter (D) lenses on right eyes. Meanwhile, animals in the LIM+EA group received EA at Hegu (LI4) combined with Taiyang (EX-HN5) acupoints, while those in the LIM+SHAM group were treated at sham points. After treatments for 1, 2, and 4wk, morphological changes in ciliary muscles were observed with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and nick end labeling (TUNEL), and the expression of the mitochondrial apoptotic signaling pathway-related molecules in ciliary muscles was measured by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and Western blot. Additionally, the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) contents were also determined in ciliary muscles. RESULTS: Axial length increased significantly in the LIM and LIM+SHAM groups and decreased in the LIM+EA group. The ciliary muscle fibers were broken and destroyed in both LIM and LIM+SHAM groups, whereas those in the LIM+EA group improved significantly. TUNEL assay showed the number of apoptotic cells increased in the LIM and LIM+SHAM groups, whereas reduced in the LIM+EA group. ATP contents showed a significant decrease in the LIM and LIM+SHAM groups, whereas increased after EA treatment. Compared with the NC group, the dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1), Caspase3, and apoptotic protease activator 1 (APAF1) levels were significantly increased in the LIM group and decreased in the LIM+EA group. CONCLUSION: The results provide evidence of EA inhibiting the development of myopia by regulating the mitochondrial apoptotic signaling pathway.

Single UAVs have limited capabilities for complex missions, so suitable solutions are needed to improve the mission success rate, as well as the UAVs' survivability. A cooperative multi-UAV formation offers great advantages in this regard; however, for large and complex systems, the traditional control methods will be invalid when faced with unstable and changing environments. To deal with the poor self-adaptability and high requirements for the environmental state information of traditional control methods for a multi-UAV cluster, this paper proposes a consistent round-up strategy based on PPO path optimization to track targets. In this strategy, the leader is trained using PPO for obstacle avoidance and target tracking, while the followers are expected to establish a communication network with the leader to obtain environmental information. In this way, the tracking control law can be designed, based on the consistency protocol and the Apollonian circle, to realize the round-up of the target and obstacle avoidance. The experimental results show that the proposed strategy can achieve the round-up of the target UAV and guide the pursuing multi-UAV group to avoid obstacles in the absence of the initial detection of the target. In multiple simulated scenarios, the success rates of the pursuit multi-UAV cluster for rounding up the target are maintained above 80%.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we present a flexible wearable supernumerary robotic limb that helps chronic stroke patients with finger rehabilitation and grasping movements. The design of this innovative limb draws inspiration from bending pneumatic muscles and the unique characteristics of an elephant's trunk tip. It places a strong emphasis on crucial factors such as lightweight construction, safety, compliance, waterproofing, and achieving a high output-to-weight/pressure ratio. The proposed structure enables the robotic limb to perform both envelope and fingertip grasping. Human-robot interaction is facilitated through a flexible bending sensor, detecting the wearer's finger movements and connecting them to motion control via a threshold segmentation method. Additionally, the system is portable for versatile daily use. To validate the effectiveness of this innovation, real-world experiments involving six chronic stroke patients and three healthy volunteers were conducted. The feedback received through questionnaires indicates that the designed mechanism holds immense promise in assisting chronic stroke patients with their daily grasping activities, potentially improving their quality of life and rehabilitation outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Objective.Head motion correction (MC) is an essential process in brain positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. We have used the Polaris Vicra, an optical hardware-based motion tracking (HMT) device, for PET head MC. However, this requires attachment of a marker to the subject's head. Markerless HMT (MLMT) methods are more convenient for clinical translation than HMT with external markers. In this study, we validated the United Imaging Healthcare motion tracking (UMT) MLMT system using phantom and human point source studies, and tested its effectiveness on eight18F-FPEB and four11C-LSN3172176 human studies, with frame-based region of interest (ROI) analysis. We also proposed an evaluation metric, registration quality (RQ), and compared it to a data-driven evaluation method, motion-corrected centroid-of-distribution (MCCOD).Approach.UMT utilized a stereovision camera with infrared structured light to capture the subject's real-time 3D facial surface. Each point cloud, acquired at up to 30 Hz, was registered to the reference cloud using a rigid-body iterative closest point registration algorithm.Main results.In the phantom point source study, UMT exhibited superior reconstruction results than the Vicra with higher spatial resolution (0.35 ± 0.27 mm) and smaller residual displacements (0.12 ± 0.10 mm). In the human point source study, UMT achieved comparable performance as Vicra on spatial resolution with lower noise. Moreover, UMT achieved comparable ROI values as Vicra for all the human studies, with negligible mean standard uptake value differences, while no MC results showed significant negative bias. TheRQevaluation metric demonstrated the effectiveness of UMT and yielded comparable results to MCCOD.Significance.We performed an initial validation of a commercial MLMT system against the Vicra. Generally, UMT achieved comparable motion-tracking results in all studies and the effectiveness of UMT-based MC was demonstrated.

ABSTRACT

We performed a meta-analysis to compare the effect of preoperative and postoperative radiotherapy on wound complications after resection of extremity soft tissue sarcoma (ESTS). A comprehensive computerised search of the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, EMBASE, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), VIP, and Wanfang databases was conducted from their inception to August 2023 to identify studies comparing the effect of preoperative and postoperative radiotherapy on wound complications after ESTS resection. Two investigators independently screened the literature, extracted the data, and assessed the quality of the articles. The meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4 software. Nine studies with 1271 patients were included, with 631 and 640 patients in the preoperative and postoperative radiotherapy groups, respectively. The results showed that the incidence of postoperative wound complications after ESTS resection was significantly higher with preoperative radiotherapy than with postoperative radiotherapy (27.26% vs. 12.03%, odds ratio [OR]: 2.88, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.12-3.91, p < 0.001). However, the rate of local recurrence of ESTS was significantly lower with preoperative radiotherapy than with postoperative radiotherapy (8.75% vs. 14.81%, OR: 0.57, 95% CI: 0.36-0.91, p = 0.02), and the 3-year overall survival was significantly higher in the preoperative radiotherapy group than in the postoperative radiotherapy group (82.24% vs. 70.04%, OR: 1.97, 95% CI: 1.05-3.71, p = 0.03). This pooled analysis suggests that although preoperative radiotherapy increases the rate of wound complications in ESTS compared with postoperative radiotherapy, it significantly reduces the rate of local recurrence after ESTS resection and improves the overall survival of patients. Owing to the limitations in the number and quality of the included studies, additional prospective cohort studies or randomised controlled trials are required to confirm these findings.
