ABSTRACT

Biochar materials have shown great potential for broad catalytic application. However, using these materials in the capacitive deionization technology (CDI) system for heavy metal removal still faces a significant challenge due to their low specific capacity and removal capability. Here, a comprehensive regulation on the interfacial/bulk electrochemistry of biochar by Zn doping is reported, which suggests a high renewable capacity (20 mg g-1 ) and outstanding selective capacitive removal ability (SCR) of Pb2+ from leachate. The SCR efficiency of Pb2+ is as high as 99% compared to K+ (8%), Na+ (13%), and Cd2+ (37%). This work proves that the doped Zn on the biochar can combine with OH- generated by water splitting to form M─OH bonds, which is beneficial for improving the specific capacity. Significantly, the relationship between double-layer capacitance and pseudo-capacitance can also be optimized by regulating the content of Zn, leading to different removal abilities of heavy metals. Therefore, this work offers insights into charge-storage kinetics, which provide valuable guidelines for designing and optimizing the biochar electrode for broader environmental applications.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The correlation between hearing loss (HL) and physical performance in patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) remains poorly investigated. This study explored the association between HL and physical performance in patients on MHD. METHODS: This multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted between July 2020 and April 2021 in seven hemodialysis centers in Shanghai and Suzhou, China. The hearing assessment was performed using pure-tone average (PTA). Physical performance was assessed using the Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT), handgrip strength, and gait speed. RESULTS: Finally, 838 adult patients (male, 516 [61.6%]; 61.2 ± 2.6 years) were enrolled. Among them, 423 (50.5%) had mild to profound HL (male, 48.6% and female, 53.4%). Patients with HL had poorer physical performance than patients without HL (p < 0.001). TUGT was positively correlated with PTA (r = 0.265, p < 0.001), while handgrip strength and gait speed were negatively correlated with PTA (r = -0.356, p < 0.001 and r = -0.342, p < 0.001, respectively). Physical performance in patients aged <60 years showed significant dose-response relationships with HL. After adjusting for confounders, the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for HL across the TUGT quartiles (lowest to highest) were 1.00 (reference), 1.15 (0.73-1.81), 1.69 (1.07-2.70), and 2.87 (1.69-4.88) (p for trend = 0.005). CONCLUSION: Lower prevalence of HL was associated with a faster TUGT and a stronger handgrip strength in patients on MHD.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (ZSS) is a plant widely used as medicine and food in Asian countries due to its numerous health benefits. γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a non-proteinaceous amino acid, is one of the major inhibitory neurotransmitters with a relaxant function. In this study, a system pharmacology approach was employed to assess the effects of a mixture composed of ZSS and GABA (ZSSG) on sleep improvement. METHODS: Mice were divided into five groups (n = 10) and received either no treatment, sodium pentobarbital, or sodium barbital with diazepam or ZSSG. The effects of ZSSG on sleep quality were evaluated in mice, and differential metabolites associated with sleep were identified among the control, ZSS, GABA, and ZSSG groups. Additionally, network-based ingredient-insomnia proximity analysis was applied to explore the major ingredients. RESULTS: ZSSG significantly improved sleep quality by decreasing sleep latency and prolonging sleep duration in sodium pentobarbital-induced sleeping mouse model (P < 0.05). ZSSG significantly enhanced the brain content of GABA in mice. Furthermore, ZSSG also significantly decreased sleep latency-induced by sodium barbital in mice (P < 0.05). Metabolic analysis revealed significant differences in 10 metabolites between ZSSG group and the groups administering ZSS or GABA. Lastly, using the network-based ingredient screening model, we discovered potential four active ingredients and three pairwise ingredient combinations with synergistic effect on insomnia from ZSSG among 85 ingredients identified by UPLC-Q/TOF-MS. Also, we have constructed an online computation platform. CONCLUSION: Our data demonstrated that ZSSG improved the sleeping quality of mice and helped to balance metabolic disorders-associated with sleep disorders. Moreover, based on the network-based prediction method, the four potential active ingredients in ZSSG could serve as quality markers-associated with insomnia. The network-based framework may open up a new avenue for the discovery of active ingredients of herbal medicine for treating complex chronic diseases or symptoms, such as insomnia.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, edge intelligence (EI) has emerged, combining edge computing with AI, and specifically deep learning, to run AI algorithms directly on edge devices. In practical applications, EI faces challenges related to computational power, power consumption, size, and cost, with the primary challenge being the trade-off between computational power and power consumption. This has rendered traditional computing platforms unsustainable, making heterogeneous parallel computing platforms a crucial pathway for implementing EI. In our research, we leveraged the Xilinx Zynq 7000 heterogeneous computing platform, employed high-level synthesis (HLS) for design, and implemented two different accelerators for LeNet-5 using loop unrolling and pipelining optimization techniques. The experimental results show that when running at a clock speed of 100 MHz, the PIPELINE accelerator, compared to the UNROLL accelerator, experiences an 8.09% increase in power consumption but speeds up by 14.972 times, making the PIPELINE accelerator superior in performance. Compared to the CPU, the PIPELINE accelerator reduces power consumption by 91.37% and speeds up by 70.387 times, while compared to the GPU, it reduces power consumption by 93.35%. This study provides two different optimization schemes for edge intelligence applications through design and experimentation and demonstrates the impact of different quantization methods on FPGA resource consumption. These experimental results can provide a reference for practical applications, thereby providing a reference hardware acceleration scheme for edge intelligence applications.

ABSTRACT

In order to solve the problems of poor mechanical property, non-antibacterial and low flux of calcium alginate (CaAlg) membrane, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) for improving CaAlg membrane in this paper. Meanwhile, the dispersion property of silver nanoparticles and the mechanical property, thermal stability, antibacterial property and filtration efficiency of the composite membrane were explored. The results illustrated CMCS observably strengthened the mechanical property and thermal stability of the composite membrane, and AgNPs endowed the composite membrane with excellent antibacterial property. The flux of the BSA/CMCS/AgNPs/CaAlg composite membrane was raised compared to CaAlg membrane. Finally, the viscose fiber/polyethylene terephthalate fiber (VF-PET) nonwoven fabric was introduced as the support layer to further improve the filtration flux and mechanical property of the composite membrane. VF-PET/BSA/CMCS/AgNPs/CaAlg membrane had a rejection rate of over 99.0 % for dye molecules and <9.0 % for salt ions, while the flux maintained 38.5 L·m-2·h-1. Furthermore, VF-PET/BSA/CMCS/AgNPs/CaAlg membrane also had excellent separation effect on actual dye wastewater. The separation of dye and salt by the membrane mainly depended on the screening mechanism of membrane pore size, rather than adsorption. The composite membrane had an outstanding performance on the separation of dye molecules and inorganic salt ions.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Functions of CircMET (hsa_circ_0082002) which is a circular RNA and derived from MET gene remain understood incompletely. In the present study, Xp11.2 translocation/NONO-TFE3 fusion renal cell carcinoma (NONO-TFE3 tRCC) with up-regulated CircMET was employed to investigate its mechanism in cancer progression and post-transcriptional regulation. METHODS: FISH and real-time PCR were performed to explore the expression and localization circMET in NONO-TFE3 tRCC tissues and cells. The functions of circMET in tRCC were investigated by proliferation analysis, EdU staining, colony and sphere formation assay. The regulatory mechanisms among circMET, CDKN2A and SMAD3 were investigated by luciferase assay, RNA immunoprecipitation, RNA pulldown and targeted RNA demethylation system. RESULTS: The expression of circMET was upregulated by NONO-TFE3 fusion in NONO-TFE3 tRCC tissues and cells, and overexpression of circMET significantly promoted the growth of NONO-TFE3 tRCC. Mechanistic studies revealed that circMET was delivered to cytosol by YTHDC1 in N6-methyladenosine (m6A)-depend manner. CircMET enhances mRNA decay of CDKN2A by direct interaction and recruitment of YTHDF2. Meanwhile, circMET competitively absorbed miR-1197 and prevented those from SMAD3 mRNA. CONCLUSIONS: CircMET promotes the development of NONO-TFE3 tRCC, and the regulation to both CDKN2A and SMAD3 of circMET was revealed. CircMET has the potential to serve as a novel target for the molecular therapy of NONO-TFE3 tRCC as well as the other cancer with high-expressing circMET.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the oncologic efficacy and feasibility of nephron-sparing surgery (NSS) in adult Xp11.2 translocation renal cell carcinoma (RCC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventy patients with Xp11.2 translocation RCC and 273 with conventional RCC from five institutions in Nanjing were retrospectively studied. All patients were older than 18 years and were categorized into clinical T1 (cT1) stage using preoperative imaging. Using the preoperative imaging and electronic medical records, anatomical and pathological features were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: Among patients with Xp11.2 translocation RCC, 18/36 (50.0%) with cT1a and 12/34 (35.3%) with cT1b tumors underwent NSS. The respective proportions in the conventional RCC group were 121/145 (83.4%) and 93/128 (72.7%). Among cT1a tumors, the Xp11.2 translocation RCCs tended to be adjacent to the collecting system, sinus, and axial renal midline compared with conventional RCCs. Patients with Xp11.2 translocation RCCs who underwent NSS had comparable progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival to radical nephrectomy (RN) patients (P > 0.05). Among cT1b tumors, surgical margin positivity and pelvicalyceal, vascular, and region lymphatic involvement were more likely to occur in the Xp11.2 translocation RCCs (P < 0.05). Patients with Xp11.2 translocation RCC who underwent RN had a more favorable PFS than those who underwent NSS (P = 0.048). However, multivariate analysis of PFS did not identify surgical method as a risk factor (P = 0.089). CONCLUSIONS: Among adults with Xp11.2 translocation RCC, NSS can be an alternative for patients with cT1a tumor but should be performed with more deliberation in patients with cT1b tumors.

ABSTRACT

An optical rotation measuring system using optical null methods is set up. The system is based on a step-motor rotating stage structure and a modulated laser, which both are controlled by digital signal processor. By introducing a curve-fitting method, the optical rotation angle is obtained from the step difference between the crossed positions in light signal curves with or without sample. The principle of this method is studied, and the system performance is investigated experimentally. We achieved an accuracy of the order of 10(-3) degree in at least ±45° range, which is an improvement compared with the resolution of 0.01° for step-motor rotation stage.
