ABSTRACT

Although there may be a number of disadvantages, many patients prefer the traditional medication over surgical wart therapy since it may permanently remove the abscess from the body. The roots of the Ficifolius A. Rich plant are one of the native plants used in Ethiopia for traditional wart treatment. Therefore, the main goal of the research was to examine the phytochemical characteristics, identify the chemical compounds, and assess the antimicrobial effectiveness of the previously described plant root extract against gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and gram-negative Escherichia coli pathogenic bacteria. Consequently, phytochemical characteristics such as tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, and saponin were perceived, which inferred the therapeutic implications of root extracts. Furthermore, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry investigations identified a number of chemical components, including the particular antiviral substance Squalene. Moreover, antibacterial test results showed that the growth of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria was inhibited with the application of crude extract. Generally, Ficifolius A. rich root extract could be effectively utilized for the treatment of anal warts.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Utilization of modern contraceptives increases over time but it was still low and varies across ages among married youth woman. This study revealed the prevalence of modern contraceptives and its associated factors among younger and older married youth women. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was applied to the sample of EMDHS 2019. Multilevel logistic regressions were carried out using STATA version 16 to identify the individual and community-level factors of modern contraceptive utilization. Adjusted odds ratios with a 95% confidence interval and variables with a p-value < 0.05 were considered to be significant determinants of modern contraceptive utilization. RESULT: In the EMDHS 2019, a total of 3290 married women between ages 15 and 34 were included. Among these 1210 (36.7%) and 2080 (63%) women, they were age groups of 15-24 and 25-34 years, respectively. Modern contraceptive utilization among women aged 15-24 and 25-34 years was 54.23% and 52.6%, respectively. Injection is a commonly used modern contraceptive method. In this study, factors associated with modern contraceptive utilization among women aged 15-24 years include women who had primary education [AOR = 2.22; 95% CI: 1.02-4.83], who had three or more children in the household [AOR = 14.29; 95% CI: 1.61-126.25], Protestants [AOR = 0.29; 95% CI: 0.14-0.61], five to seven households [AOR = 0.34; 95% CI: 0.17-0.69], and region [AOR = 6.98; 95%:2.30-21.16]. On other hand, factors associated with modern contraceptive utilization among women aged 25-34 were women who had one or two under-five children in the household [AOR = 1.66; 95% CI: 1.03-2.68] and region [AOR = 3.54; 95%CI: 1.79-6.97]. CONCLUSIONS: More than 50% of participants used modern contraceptives in both age groups and, the associated factor of modern contraceptive utilization varied among this age group. Health managers and policymakers need to consider age group, region, educational status, religion, and fertility level in planning of family planning program.

ABSTRACT

Background: Traumatic injuries are a major cause of emergency room visits and hospital workload, and they are a global health concern. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the pattern of injuries, treatment outcomes, and associated factors among traumatic patients attending the emergency department of Dessie City Government Hospitals, Northeast Ethiopia. Methods: An institutional-based retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted among 415 traumatic patients selected by using a systematic random sampling technique, from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2022. Data were collected through document review. The data were presented with frequency tables and graphs. Data were entered using EPI data version 4.6 and exported to SPSS version 26 for analysis. Both bi-variable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to analyze the relationship between the independent variable and the outcome variable. As a measure of association, the adjusted odds ratio was utilized, which has a 95% confidence level. Statistically significant variables were those with a p-value of less than 0.05. Results: From 420 patient charts, 415 traumatic patients' charts were reviewed in this study, with a response rate of 98.8%. The prevalence of good treatment outcomes among traumatic patients was found to be 67% [95% CI: 62.2, 72.0]. In the final multivariable analysis, having comorbidity [AOR=, 0.31 95% CI: 0.16, 0.60], arriving within one hour [AOR=4.79, 95% CI: 2.10, 10.94], arriving two up to twenty-four hours [AOR=2.25, 95% CI: 1.34, 3.78] and being conscious at admission [AOR=1.82, 95% CI: 1.02, 3.26] had a significant association with a good treatment outcome among traumatic patients. Conclusion: Trauma constitutes a major public health problem in our setting and contributes significantly to unacceptably high morbidity and mortality. Interventions should be targeted at urgent injury prevention and management strategies, along with the establishment of a pre-hospital emergency medical service system.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: In Ethiopia, community-level knowledge about the current COVID-19 pandemic has not been well studied. This study is aimed to assess knowledge level and factors influencing the prevention of the COVID-19 pandemic among residents of Dessie and Kombolcha city administrations, Ethiopia. DESIGN: Community-based cross-sectional study. SETTINGS: Dessie and Kombolcha city administrations. PARTICIPANTS: Participants were household heads or members (n=828, >18 years) who have lived in the study area for at least 2 months preceding the survey. METHODS: Binary logistic regression was used for a single outcome and multiple response variables. In the multivariable regression model, a value of p<0.05 and adjusted OR (AOR) with 95% CI were used to identify factors associated with knowledge level of the community. Epi Info V.7.2 and SPSS V.20 software were used for data entry and analysis, respectively. OUTCOME: Knowledge level. RESULTS: A total of 828 participants was involved with a response rate of 98%. Women were 61.7%. Participants' mean (±SD) age was 39 (±14) years. Of the total participants 54.11% (95% CI 50.6% to 57.6%) had inadequate knowledge about COVID-19 prevention. Significant associations were reported among women (AOR=1.41; 95% CI 1.03 to 1.92); age ≥65 years (AOR=2.72; 95% CI 1.45 to 5.11); rural residence (AOR=2.69; 95% CI 1.78 to 4.07); unable to read and write (AOR=1.60; 95% CI 1.02 to 2.51); information not heard from healthcare workers, mass media and social media (AOR=1.95; 95% CI 1.35 to 2.82), (AOR=2.5; 95% CI 1.58 to 4.19) and (AOR=2.13; 95% CI 1.33 to 3.42), respectively, with inadequate knowledge. CONCLUSION: These findings revealed that more than 50% of participants had inadequate knowledge about COVID-19. It highlights the need for widespread awareness campaigns about COVID-19 through mass media, healthcare professionals and social media as sources of information. House-to-house awareness creation is recommended to address older adults who are more vulnerable to the pandemic.

ABSTRACT

Current tests of tuberculosis (TB) infection (tuberculin skin test (TST), interferon (IFN)-γ-release assays (IGRAs) and IFN-γ-induced protein (IP)-10) have limitations and their value when used consecutively to identify infected children has not been explored. This study describes TST, IGRA and IP-10 responses in children in contact with adults with TB, the agreement of the tests and whether using multiple tests indentifies more infected children. 330 children (aged 1-15 yrs) in contact with adults with pulmonary TB and 156 controls were studied in Ethiopia. Children exposed to adults with high bacilli grades in sputum were more likely to have positive TST, IFN-γ and IP-10 than controls. The agreement of positive tests was directly associated with the sputum bacilli grades (p<0.001 for all). The agreement of negative tests was higher in control children. The consecutive use of the tests increased the number of children classified as having at least one positive test. Using three tests increases the number of children classified as infected. This increase is associated with the bacilli load of the adults. Using only one test may underestimate the proportion of infected children, but the interpretation of the data is difficult due to the lack of reference standards.
