ABSTRACT

Gizzerosine is a biogenic amine produced in fish meal drying process and posted higher mortality due to gizzard erosion in poultry than histamine. However, it is difficult to obtain gizzerosine and achieve sensitive practical detection due to its simple structure. Herein, a monoclonal antibody (mAb) specific to gizzerosine was generated based on the new structural design and a fluorescence immunosensor for sensitive and on-site detection of gizzerosine in feed was first established. Molecular modeling of the three-dimensional (3D) structure and surface electrostatic potential of gizzerosine indicated that the carbonyl group of gizzerosine hapten might affect the important sites of antigen-antibody interactions. The proposed structure was used to obtain the sensitive and specific mAb with IC50 of 3.88 ng/mL in indirect competitive ELISA which was approximately 100-fold lower than that of direct competitive ELISA. Considering the practical application scenarios, a fluorescence immunosensor based on microporous dry method integrated with independent quality control line was established to improve detection stability. Under the optimum conditions, the proposed immunosensor showed a good linear relationship from 1.10 to 19.78 ng/mL and provided a low detection limit of 50 ng/g which was approximately 80-fold lower than the maximum recommended amount (0.4 mg/kg) of gizzerosine in feed. The recoveries of 6 kinds of feed ranged from 83.1 % to 114.3 %, which was in good consistence with that of UHPLC-MS/MS. Overall, this work provides a fast, cost-effective and reliable on-site tool for rapid screening of gizzerosine residues in feed samples.

ABSTRACT

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), a molecular cytogenetic technique that enables the visualization and identification of specific DNA sequences within chromosomes, has emerged as a pivotal tool in plant breeding programs, particularly in the case of Veronica species. Veronica, a genus with a complex reproductive system, often poses challenges in accurately identifying hybrids because of its tendency to hybridize, which leads to intricate genetic variation. This study focused on the use of FISH as a prescreening method to identify true hybrids in Veronica breeding programs. FISH analysis was first performed on the parents to identify their 45S and 5S rDNA signals, along with their respective chromosome numbers. The signals were then compared with those of the twenty progenies with reference to their supposed parents. Five true hybrids, seven self-pollinated progenies, and eight false hybrids were identified through FISH. The findings highlight the significance of FISH as a screening method that contributes significantly to the efficiency of Veronica breeding programs by ensuring the preservation of desired genetic traits and minimizing the inadvertent inclusion of misidentified hybrids. To conclude, this study underscores the vital role of FISH in enhancing the precision and success of breeding programs and opens new avenues for improved breeding strategies and crop development.

ABSTRACT

Photonic diplexers are being widely investigated for high data transfer rates in on-chip communication. However, dividing the available spectrum into nonoverlapping multicarrier frequency sub-bands has remained a challenge in designing frequency-selective time-invariant channels. Here, an on-chip topological diplexer is reported exhibiting terahertz frequency band filtering through Klein tunneling of topological edge modes. The silicon topological diplexer chip facilitates two high-speed channels with quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) over a broad bandwidth of 12.5 GHz each. These channels operate at carrier frequencies of 305 and 321.6 GHz, achieving a combined diplexer capacity of 150 Gbit s-1. To ensure minimal interference between adjacent channels, a guard band is implemented. Topologically protected edge modes suppress the frequency selective fading of the broadband signals and hold promise for diverse integrated photonic applications spanning terahertz and telecommunication realms, including the design of lossless topological multiplexers, interconnects, antennas, and modulators for the sixth to X generation (6G to XG) wireless.

ABSTRACT

Topological slow light exhibits potential to achieve stopped light by virtue of its widely known robust and non-reciprocal behaviours. Conventional approach for achieving topological slow light often involves flat-band engineering without disentangling the underlying physical mechanism. Here, we unveil the presence of counter-propagating waves within valley kink states as the distinctive hallmark of the slow light topological photonic waveguides. These counter-propagating waves, supported by topological vortices along glide-symmetric interface, provide significant flexibility for controlling the slowness of light. We tune the group velocity of light by changing the spatial separation between vortices adjacent to the glide-symmetric interface. We also dynamically control the group delay by introducing a non-Hermitian defect using photoexcitation to adjust the relative strength of the counter-propagating waves. This study introduces active slow light topological photonic device on a silicon chip, opening new horizons for topological photon transport through defects, topological light-matter interactions, nonlinear topological photonics, and topological quantum photonics.

ABSTRACT

Walnut is cultivated around the world for its precious woody nut and edible oil. Recently, walnut infected by Colletotrichum spp. resulted in a great yield and quality loss. In August and September 2014, walnut fruits with anthracnose were sampled from two commercial orchards in Shaanxi and Liaoning provinces, and five representative isolates were used in this study. To identify the pathogen properly, four genes per region (internal transcribed spacer, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, actin, and chitin synthase) were sequenced and used in phylogenetic studies. Based on multilocus phylogenetic analysis, five isolates clustered with Colletotrichum fioriniae, including its ex-type, with 100% bootstrap support. The results of multilocus phylogenetic analyses, morphology, and pathogenicity confirmed that C. fioriniae was one of the walnut anthracnose pathogens in China. All 13 fungicides tested inhibited mycelial growth and spore germination. Flusilazole, fluazinam, prochloraz, and pyraclostrobin showed the strongest suppressive effects on the mycelial growth than the others, the average EC50 values ranged from 0.09 to 0.40 µg/ml, and there was not any significant difference (P < 0.05). Pyraclostrobin, thiram, and azoxystrobin were the most effective fungicides on spore germination (P < 0.05), and the EC50 values ranged from 0.01 to 0.44 µg/ml. Pyraclostrobin, azoxystrobin, fluazinam, flusilazole, mancozeb, thiram, and prochloraz exhibited a good control effect on walnut anthracnose caused by C. fioriniae, and preventive activities were greater than curative activities. Pyraclostrobin at 250 a.i. µg/ml and fluazinam at 500 a.i. µg/ml provided the highest preventive and curative efficacy, and the values ranged from 81.3 to 82.2% and from 72.9 to 73.6%, respectively. As a consequence, mancozeb and thiram could be used at the preinfection stage, and pyraclostrobin, azoxystrobin, flusilazole, fluazinam, and prochloraz could be used at the early stage for effective prevention and control of walnut anthracnose caused by C. fioriniae. The results will provide more significant instructions for controlling the disease effectively in northern China.

ABSTRACT

The topological phase revolutionized wave transport, enabling integrated photonic interconnects with sharp light bending on a chip. However, the persistent challenge of momentum mismatch during intermedium topological mode transitions due to material impedance inconsistency remains. We present a 100-Gbps topological wireless communication link using integrated photonic devices that conserve valley momentum. The valley-conserved silicon topological waveguide antenna achieves a 12.2-dBi gain, constant group delay across a 30-GHz bandwidth and enables active beam steering within a 36° angular range. The complementary metal oxide semiconductor-compatible valley-conserved devices represent a major milestone in hybrid electronic-photonic-based topological wireless communications, enabling terabit-per-second backhaul communication, high throughput, and intermedium transport of information carriers, vital for the future of communication from the sixth to X generation.

ABSTRACT

Visible light optical coherence tomography (VIS-OCT) of the human retina is an emerging imaging modality that uses shorter wavelengths in visible light range than conventional near-infrared (NIR) light. It provides one-micron level axial resolution to better separate stratified retinal layers, as well as microvascular oximetry. However, due to the practical limitation of laser safety and comfort, the permissible illumination power is much lower than NIR OCT, which can be challenging to obtain high-quality VIS-OCT images and subsequent image analysis. Therefore, improving VIS-OCT image quality by denoising is an essential step in the overall workflow in VIS-OCT clinical applications. In this paper, we provide the first VIS-OCT retinal image dataset from normal eyes, including retinal layer annotation and "noisy-clean" image pairs. We propose an efficient co-learning deep learning framework for parallel self-denoising and segmentation simultaneously. Both tasks synergize within the same network and improve each other's performance. The significant improvement of segmentation (2% higher Dice coefficient compared to segmentation-only process) for ganglion cell layer (GCL), inner plexiform layer (IPL) and inner nuclear layer (INL) is observed when available annotation drops to 25%, suggesting an annotation-efficient training. We also showed that the denoising model trained on our dataset generalizes well for a different scanning protocol.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Weeds grow aggressively in agricultural fields, leading to reduced crop yields and an inability to meet the growing demand for food. Herbicides are currently the most effective method for weed control. However, the overuse of herbicides has resulted in the evolution of resistance mutants and has caused environmental pollution. Therefore, new technologies are urgently required to address this global challenge. RESULTS: We report a copper-benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate metal organic framework (Cu-BDC MOF)-functionalized carboxyl hollow mesoporous silica (HMS-COOH) delivery system for the pH-controlled release of the acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase)-inhibiting herbicide quizalofop-p-ethyl (QE). The delivery system (QE@HMS@Cu-BDC) enabled the efficient control of barnyard grasses that are susceptible and resistant to ACCase-inhibiting herbicides, which showed 93.33% and 88.33% FW control efficacy at 67.5 g ha-1 , respectively. With the lowest pH value (3), QE and copper ion were released slowly to total 70.30% and 78.55% levels (respectively) from QE@HMS@Cu-BDC after 89 h. QE@HMS@Cu-BDC showed better absorption, conduction, transportation and ACCase activity inhibition performance than that of QE emulsifiable concentrate (EC) in both susceptible and ACCase-herbicide resistant barnyard grasses. In addition, with the safener effect of carrier HMS@Cu-BDC and the aid of the safener fenchlorazole-ethyl (FE), the application of QE@HMS@Cu-BDC was shown to mitigate the damage caused by QE to rice plants. CONCLUSION: This work found that the new material HMS-COOH@Cu-BDC can be used to mitigate herbicide-induced oxidative stress and improve rice plant safety. Futhermore, the QE@HMS-COOH@Cu-BDC constructed in this research might be used as an efficient nanopesticide formulation for weed controls in paddy rice fields. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

ABSTRACT

Posterior choroidal leiomyoma is a sporadic, rare benign tumor that is always confused with anaplastic melanoma. Here we report a case and provide a review. Most of the preoperative findings in our case were suggestive of malignant choroidal melanoma. However, the contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) suggested a benign hemangioma. In summary, the posterior choroidal leiomyomas were yellowish-white in color and most commonly located in the temporal quadrant of the fundus (11/15). They were more frequent in Asians (13/16), the prevalence was almost equal in males and females (9:7), with a mean age of 35y. Microscopically, the tumor typically showed spindle cell bundles and nonmitotic ovoid nuclei arranged in intersecting fascicles. Vitrectomy is now a popular treatment option and definitive diagnosis can be made after immunohistochemistry. Finally, some summarized features of this tumor differ from those previously described. These may help in the diagnosis of posterior choroidal leiomyoma and differentiation from malignant melanoma.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical efficacy of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis in patients over 75 years old. METHODS: The clinical efficacy of primary fixed platform UKA in patients with osteoarthritis, was retrospectively analyzed from October 2014 to November 2020. Age, body mass index (BMI), range of motion (ROM), preoperative joint function score, the quality of life score and other preoperative indicators were measured by propensity score matching (PSM). The patients were divided into elderly group (≥75 years old) and control group (<75 years old). Oxford knee score(OKS), Western Ontario McMaster Universities osteoarthritis index(WOMAC), Short Form-12 including physical component summary (PCS), mental component summary(MCS), minimal clinically important difference(MCID ) and clinical complications were evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively. RESULTS: A total of 514 patients were analyzed, 428 patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria. A propensity-score matching study was conducted to eliminate confounding factors. After 1∶2 propensity match, there were 84 patients in elderly group (≥75 years), age ranged from 75 to 88 years old, with an average of (78.79±3.08) years old, and 168 patients in control group (<75 years), age ranged from 47 to 74 years old, with an average of (64.10±5.96)years old. The follow-up duration of two groups ranged from 12 to 84 months with an average of (29.35±16.52) months in elderly group, and 12 to 85 months with an average of (31.83±17.34) months in control group. There was only significant difference in age between the elderly and control groups preoperatively (P<0.01). Postoperatively, the elderly group showed significantly higher WOMAC (P<0.01) and lower SF-12 PCS scores (P<0.01) as compared to the control group. There was no significant difference between the elderly group and the control group in knee range of motion, OKS and the proportion of each scoring system reaching the minimum clinical difference value (P>0.05). In the aspect of preperative complications, the elderly group exhibited more surgical site complications and postoperative delirium compared to control group(P<0.05). The differences in other indicators including deep vein thrombosis, acute urinary retention, cardiovascular events, cerebrovascular events and radiolucent lines around prothesis were not statistically significant(P>0.05). CONCLUSION: UKA in the treatment of elderly patients over 75 years old with knee osteoarthritis was safe and feasible, and could obtain satisfactory short-term efficacy.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Oxygen saturation (sO2) plays a critical role in retinal pathophysiology, especially at the macula, which undergoes significant energy consumption. While macular damage has been suggested to be involved in early-stage glaucoma, there has been no report to date on non-invasive macular sO2 in glaucoma. Therefore, we conducted this study to compare macular sO2 associated with other clinical measurements between normal and glaucoma subjects and evaluate whether there are significant differences. Method: This is a cross-sectional study. We used visible light optical coherence tomography (VIS-OCT) for retinal oximetry in perifoveal vessels. The subjects from groups of normal, suspect/pre-perimetric glaucoma (GS/PPG) and perimetric glaucoma (PG) were scanned using VIS-OCT in the macular region with a sampling density of 512×256 in an area of 5×5 mm2. 48 eyes (16 normal, 17 GS/PPG and 15 PG) were included for the analysis. For each eye, we measured the sO2 of arterioles (AsO2), venules (VsO2), and calculated the difference between arterioles and venules (A-V sO2=AsO2-VsO2), oxygen extraction (OE=(AsO2-VsO2)/AsO2 ×100%). Additionally, we included Zeiss Cirrus OCT scans and 24-2 visual field test (VFT) for clinical benchmark. One-way ANOVA was used to compare the differences among the three groups. Spearman correlation tests were used for correlation sO2 markers to standard metrics including the thickness of ganglion cell layer and inner plexiform layer (GCL+IPL), circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (cpRNFL) and mean deviation (MD) in VFT. Result: Significant differences were found among three groups for all VIS-OCT, Zeiss OCT, and VFT variables. Macular AsO2, A-V sO2, OE decreased, and VsO2 increased along with severity. Macular AsO2 and A-V sO2 were statistically correlated with GCL+IPL and cpRNFL in all eyes, as well as only PG eyes. Within PG eyes, the correlation between AsO2 and GCL+IPL is dominant in more damaged lower hemifield. Conclusion: The GS/PPG and PG subjects had significantly higher macular VsO2, lower A-V sO2 and OE indicating less oxygen consumption. The sO2 measured by retinal oximetry of VIS-OCT can be a potential metric for the early diagnosis of glaucoma.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the effect of the key glycolysis enzyme 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-biphosphatase 3 (PFKFB3) on the biological activity of hemangioma-derived endothelial cells (HemECs) .Methods:Totally, 4 proliferating infantile hemangioma (IH) tissues and 4 involuting IH tissues were collected. Primary HemECs were isolated from the proliferating IH tissues, and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) served as controls. Immunohistochemical study and Western blot analysis were performed to determine the expression of PFKFB3 in the IH tissues and HemECs, respectively. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK8) assay was conducted to evaluate the effect of PFK15 (a specific inhibitor of PFKFB3) at concentrations of 0 - 10 μmol/L on the proliferation of HemECs, and HemECs treated without PFKFB3 served as the control group. Some in vitro cultured HemECs were treated with 5 μmol/L PFK15, and served as a PFK15 intervention group, while HemECs treated without PFK15 served as a control group; then, the migratory ability of HemECs was assessed by Transwell assay, and the apoptosis level of HemECs was detected by flow cytometry. Comparisons between groups were performed by using t test or analysis of variance. Results:Immunohistochemical study showed that the positive rate of PFKFB3 was significantly higher in the proliferating IH tissues (74.34% ± 5.26%) than in the involuting IH tissues (41.46% ± 2.99%, t = 9.40, P < 0.001). Western blot analysis showed that the relative expression level of PFKFB3 was also significantly higher in HemECs (0.73 ± 0.05) than in HUVECs (0.45 ± 0.04, t = 8.50, P < 0.001). CCK8 assay revealed significantly decreased proliferative activity of HemECs in the 0.625-, 1.25-, 2.5-, 5-, and 10-μmol/L PFK15 groups compared with the control group (all P < 0.01). Compared with the control group, the PFK15 intervention group showed significantly decreased number of migratory HemECs (297 ± 15 vs. 422 ± 8, t = 12.59, P < 0.001), but significantly increased apoptosis rates of HemECs (6.69% ± 0.64% vs. 0.34% ± 0.07%, t = 17.07, P < 0.001) . Conclusion:The key glycolytic enzyme PFKFB3 was highly expressed in the proliferating IH tissues and HemECs, and the PFKFB3 inhibitor PFK15 could suppress the proliferation, migration, and increase the apoptosis of HemECs.

ABSTRACT

Exponential growth in data rate demands has driven efforts to develop novel beamforming techniques for realizing massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems in sixth-generation (6G) terabits per second wireless communications. Existing beamforming techniques rely on conventional optimization algorithms that are too computationally expensive for real-time applications and require complex digital processing yet to be achieved for phased array antennas at terahertz frequencies. Here, we develop an intelligent and self-adaptive beamforming scheme enabled by deep reinforcement learning, which can predict the spatial phase profiles required to produce arbitrary desired radiation patterns in real-time. Our deep learning model adaptively trains an artificial neural network in real-time by comparing the input and predicted intensity patterns via automatic differentiation of the phase-to-intensity function. As a proof of concept, we experimentally demonstrate two-dimensional beamforming by spatially modulating broadband terahertz waves using silicon metasurfaces designed with the aid of the deep learning model. Our work offers an efficient and robust deep learning model for real-time self-adaptive beamforming to enable multi-user massive MIMO systems for 6G terahertz wireless communications, as well as intelligent metasurfaces for other terahertz applications in imaging and sensing.

ABSTRACT

Topological photonics has expanded our understanding of electromagnetic wave propagation and unraveled new methods of electromagnetic wave shaping. Among the various topological photonic systems, valley photonic crystal (VPC) is a highly versatile platform for constructing interfaces that supports unidirectional edge state to enable the robust topological transport of light. Although silicon VPC waveguides has demonstrated the lossless propagation of terahertz (THz) waves through multiple sharp bends, existing designs are mostly based on the standard zigzag-interface. Here, we explore interfacial topological photonics by designing a composite interface junction for an air-slot-like VPC waveguide with a 60° bend and an unchanging bearded-interface to allow the topologically protected propagation of THz waves over a 20% relative bandwidth. We employ particle swarm optimization to design the geometry of a bearded-interface silicon VPC waveguide to achieve a 42% relative bandgap and a topological edge state spanning a usable 25% relative bandwidth. Our work illustrates the prospects and challenges of interfacial topological photonics in the design of broadband silicon topological waveguides for potential applications across the electromagnetic spectrum, including the on-chip THz sixth-generation (6G) communication.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to identify parental needs for pediatric palliative care and obtain their opinions on developing pediatric palliative care in South Korea. This qualitative research design used inductive and deductive methods. The data were collected through semistructured interviews. A total of 6 parents actively caring for a child with life-threatening conditions and 7 bereaved parents participated in this study. A total of 707 significant statements, 43 subthemes, and 16 themes according to 6 structured matrices (advance care planning and symptom control, psychological and spiritual care, supporting everyday lives, end-of-life care and bereavement support, delivery model of pediatric palliative care, and unmet needs within current services) on the care and bereavement experiences of parents of children with life-threatening conditions were derived. Palliative care for children is a multidisciplinary approach to evaluate, prevent, and manage multifaceted symptoms and to support children with life-threatening conditions and their families. Our findings suggest that parents of children with life-threatening conditions in South Korea present multidimensional needs across the diagnostic groups and the illness trajectories and inform policy makers and health care professionals to design a pediatric palliative care delivery model. Further studies examining the unmet needs are required to enhance the quality of pediatric palliative care.
