ABSTRACT

Bacterial blight, a major disease in rice, poses a serious impact on rice production. In this study, a doubled haploid (DH) population derived from a cross between the introduced japonica cultivar 'Maybelle' and the indica landrace 'Baiyeqiu' was used to investigate the pathogenicity of four pathogen races causing bacterial blight. The results showed that the pathogenicity of all the pathogen races exhibited continuous, transgressive distribution in the DH population. Moreover, strong correlations existed between every two pathogen races, with the correlation coefficients ranging from 0.3 to 0.6. A total of 12 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) distributed on chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 12 were detected for rice bacterial blight, explaining 4.95% to 16.05% of the phenotype. Among these QTLs, a major QTL located in the interval RM6024-RM163 on chromosome 5 was detected in three pathogen races. In addition, the pyramiding of the positive alleles can apparently improve the rice resistance to bacterial blight. This study is of great significance for broadening the genetic resources with resistance to bacterial blight in China.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Whether the construction of broadband infrastructure can alleviate the problem of mismatched medical resources is crucial to the national information strategy, residents' well-being, and social equity. However, the academic community lacks a comprehensive theoretical analysis and rigorous empirical research on this issue. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to construct a preliminary theoretical framework to scientifically assess the effects of broadband infrastructure development on the mitigation of health care resource mismatch from both theoretical and empirical perspectives, to explore the potential mechanisms of influence, and ultimately to develop several practical policy recommendations. METHODS: We first used a theoretical analysis to propose testable theoretical hypotheses and establish a preliminary theoretical framework. Then, based on balanced panel data from 300 cities from 2010 to 2021, a 2-way fixed effects difference-in-differences model was used for empirical testing. Mechanism tests, robustness analyses, and heterogeneity analyses were further conducted. RESULTS: The research findings demonstrate that the Broadband China Policy significantly reduces the degree of mismatch in medical resources by primarily using innovation effects and integration effects, resulting in a reduction of 13.2%. In addition, the heterogeneity analysis reveals that the central and eastern regions, cities with large populations, and areas with a high proportion of young people benefit more significantly. CONCLUSIONS: This study fully confirms, both theoretically and empirically, that broadband infrastructure construction can effectively reduce the mismatch of medical resources not only by expanding the existing literature on the impact of broadband on public services but also by providing valuable opportunities for policy makers to optimize the allocation of medical resources.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Masks are designed to reduce the spread of airborne pathogens, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), although wearing a mask has some adverse effects. The primary objective of this study was to explore the effects of surgical masks and N95 respirators on patients diagnosed with anxiety. Methods: Subjects diagnosed with first-episode anxiety disorders were recruited from outpatient departments between February and July, 2023. A self-administered questionnaire was administered at baseline and at follow-up. The questionnaire addressed demographic information, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Subjects were divided into three groups (n=30 each): control (no mask); surgical mask; and N95 respirator. The Kruskal-Wallis test and repeated measures analysis of variance were used to examine associations between face mask use and emotion. Results: Ninety subjects completed the study, of whom 51 (56.67%) were male and 39 (43.33%) were female. Time and group effects were observed in HAM-A score among the 3 groups. After 4 weeks, mean (± SD) HAM-A score decreased from 32.63±13.37 to 28.07±9.33 in the control group, increased from 33.67±12.47 to 36.80±10.32 in the surgical mask group, and from 32.33±14.73 to 41.13±8.29 in the N95 respirator group, with no sex differences among the 3 groups. HAM-A score was significantly higher in the mask groups than that in the control group at follow-up. Only N95 respirator group exhibited significant time effects on HAM-D and ISI scores, with a decreasing trend in HAM-D score and an opposite trend in ISI score. Conclusion: Prolonged mask use may exacerbate anxiety, especially among those wearing N95 respirator masks. In a post-pandemic environment, governments should improve public health beliefs regarding coronavirus disease 2019 and promote the safety of face mask use, thus reducing the physiological and psychological effects of improper mask use.

ABSTRACT

The outbreak of infectious diseases often exhibits periodicity, and this periodic behavior can be mathematically represented as a limit cycle. However, the periodic behavior has rarely been considered in demonstrating the cluster phenomenon of infection induced by diffusion (the instability modes) in the SIR model. We investigate the emergence of Turing instability from a stable equilibrium and a limit cycle to illustrate the dynamical and biological mechanisms of pattern formation. We identify the Hopf bifurcation to demonstrate the existence of a stable limit cycle using First Lyapunov coefficient in our spatiotemporal diffusion-driven SIR model. The competition between different instability modes induces different types of patterns and eventually spot patterns emerge as stable patterns. We investigate the impact of susceptible, infected, and recovered individuals on the type of patterns. Interestingly, these instability modes play a vital role in selecting the pattern formations, which is directly related to the number of observed spot patterns. Subsequently, we explain the dynamical and biological mechanisms of spot patterns to develop an effective epidemic prevention strategy.

ABSTRACT

Anaerobically fermented pickled tea (PT) can be produced by spontaneous fermentation (SF) or yeast-enhanced fermentation (YF). Aroma and taste characteristics of PT during YF and SF were investigated using sensory evaluation, odour activity, aroma character impact values, HS-SPME-GC-MS, UPLC-QQQ-MS/MS, and spectrophotometry, annotating 198 volatile and 115 non-volatile components. The main contributing volatile components were ß-ionone, and 1-octanol, promoted by YF and SF, and yielding floral and fruity aromas respectively. Additionally, compared with SF, YF promoted the formation of citronellol yielding a floral aroma, inhibited the stale aroma of methoxybenzenes, and reduced bitter, astringent, and sour tastes. Furthermore, partial least-squares regression analysis identified the main components related to the 'acides aroma' of PT as linalool oxide, n-decanoic acid, hexanoic acid, 3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienoic acid, 3-methyl-1-dodecyn-3-ol, and nerolidol. This application could be used as methodology for the comprehensive analysis of tea aroma and taste and these results can act as guidelines for PT production and quality control.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Smartphone game addiction has emerged as a major public health problem in China and worldwide. In November 2019 and August 2021, the National Press and Publication Administration of China implemented two increasingly strict policies, as a means of preventing smartphone game addiction in adolescents aged 18 or below. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the policies on smartphone game play time, addiction, and emotion among rural adolescents in China. METHODS: We sent the questionnaire to rural adolescents through the online survey tool Questionnaire Star, a professional online survey evaluation platform. The questionnaire included demographic data, smartphone use survey, smartphone game addiction and emotion evaluation scales. The Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV) measured adolescents' smartphone game addiction. The Short Version of UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale (SUPPS-P) and Social Anxiety Scale for Children (SASC) measured emotion. According to SAS-SV score, the enrolled rural adolescents were divided into addiction group and non-addiction group. The t-test, Chi-square test, and repeated measure ANOVA assessed the effect of the policies on adolescents' smartphone game addiction and emotion. RESULTS: Among enrolled 459 rural adolescents with a mean age of 14.36 ± 1.37years, 151 (32.90%) were in the addiction group and 308 (67.10%) were in the non-addiction group. Adolescents in the addiction group were older, more male, and higher grade. There were time and group effects between the two groups in playtime. After a year of policies implementation, the weekly game time dropped from 3.52 ± 1.89 h to 2.63 ± 1.93 h in the addiction group and from 2.71 ± 1.75 h to 2.36 ± 1.73 h in the non-addiction group. There were also time and group effects in SAS-SV and SASC scores, but not for SUPPS-P score. In the addiction group, the SAS-SV score dropped from 41.44 ± 7.45 to 29.58 ± 12.43, which was below the cut-off value for addiction, and the level of social anxiety was consistently higher than non-addiction group. CONCLUSIONS: The playtime of rural adolescents spent on smartphone games has decreased significantly due to the restriction of the policies rather than the lack of addiction or social anxiety. The policies had practically significant effects in reducing smartphone game play time for rural adolescents in China.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and insomnia symptoms are common in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), which might lead to a poor prognosis and an increased risk of depression relapse. The current study aimed to investigate the prevalence, and sociodemographic and clinical correlates of EDS and insomnia symptoms among adolescents with MDD. METHODS: The sample of this cross-sectional study included 297 adolescents (mean age=15.26 years; range=12-18 years; 218 females) with MDD recruited from three general and four psychiatric hospitals in five cities (Hefei, Bengbu, Fuyang, Suzhou, and Ma'anshan) in Anhui Province, China between January and August, 2021. EDS and insomnia symptoms, and clinical severity of depressive symptoms were assessed using Epworth sleepiness scale, Insomnia Severity Index, and Clinical Global Impression-Severity. RESULTS: The prevalence of EDS and insomnia symptoms in adolescents with MDD was 39.7% and 38.0%, respectively. Binary logistic regression analyses showed that EDS symptoms were significantly associated with higher body mass index (odds ratio [OR]=1.097, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.027-1.172), more severe depressive symptoms (OR=1.313, 95% CI=1.028-1.679), and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors use (OR=2.078, 95% CI=1.199-3.601). And insomnia symptoms were positively associated with female sex (OR=1.955, 95% CI=1.052-3.633), suicide attempts (OR=1.765, 95% CI=1.037-3.005), more severe depressive symptoms (OR=2.031, 95% CI=1.523-2.709), and negatively associated with antipsychotics use (OR=0.433, 95% CI=0.196-0.952). CONCLUSION: EDS and insomnia symptoms are common among adolescents with MDD. Considering their negative effects on the clinical prognosis, regular screening and clinical managements should be developed for this patient population.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is more common in men aged 40 to 59, and radiotherapy is an effective treatment. Nasopharyngeal lymphoma (NPL) is rare, and the coexistence of nasopharyngeal mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) and NPC is even rarer. A collision tumor is a rare type of tumor that refers to two or more different tumors occurring in the same organ. No reports to date have described a collision tumor of NPC and MCL occurring within the same nasopharyngeal mass. We herein report the successful treatment of a unique case of synchronous coexistence of NPC and MCL occurring in the nasopharynx of a Chinese man. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old man presented with a 5-month history of swallowing discomfort. Biopsy was performed under nasopharyngeal endoscopy, and histopathology revealed NPC. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed lesions in the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and tonsils, as well as enlarged lymph nodes in the parotid gland, posterior ear, and neck. This may be a synchronous dual primary tumor coexisting with NPC and NPL. Pathology consultation confirmed that the biopsy specimen of the nasopharynx was a collision tumor of NPC and MCL. Positron emission tomography computed tomography (PET-CT) revealed thickening of the posterior wall of the nasopharynx, which was considered NPC with lymphoma. The enlargement of the pharyngeal lymph ring and multiple hypermetabolic lymph nodes were evaluated as lymphoma infiltration. The patient received two courses of R-CHOP chemotherapy (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone) followed by head and neck radiotherapy. At the time of this writing, he had remained alive without recurrence for 61 months since the initial treatment and was still undergoing follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: It is very important to correctly recognize collision tumors. Magnetic resonance imaging helps identify different components of collision tumors. Pathological examination helps to confirm the diagnosis. Histological examination reveals different components, and PET-CT can help determine the extent of the lesion. Dose-adjusted chemotherapy combined with radiotherapy may have promising herapeutic effects, but additional case studies are needed to confirm.

BACKGROUND: Collision tumors of primary malignant lymphoma and adenocarcinoma in the colon are rare. Primary diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL)-adenocarcinoma collision tumors are especially rare. CASE SUMMARY: A 74-year-old woman presented with abdominal pain of 1 mo duration. Biopsy under colonoscopy revealed adenocarcinoma of the ascending colon. Subsequently, the patient underwent laparoscopic radical resection of right colon cancer with lymph node dissection. A collision tumor was found incidentally through postoperative pathological sampling. Genetic analysis showed a collision tumor of DLBCL with germinal center B-cell subtype and TP53 mutation, and adenocarcinoma arising in a tubulovillous adenoma in the colon, with BRAF mutation and mutL homolog 1 promoter methylation. The patient died 3 mo after surgery. To our knowledge, this is the 23rd reported case of collision tumor of colorectal adenocarcinoma and lymphoma. The mean age of the 23 patients was 73 years. The most common site was the cecum. There were 15 cases with follow-up data including 11 living and four dead with a 3-year overall survival rate of 71.5%. CONCLUSION: Based on pathological and genetic analysis, surgery combined with chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy may have good therapeutic effects for collision tumor.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to examine the efficacy of video games in improving cognitive function in chronic patients with schizophrenia and to evaluate the biomarker of video games for cognitive function. The patients in the game group were requested to play single-player video games on their smartphones for 1 h per day, five times a week for 6 weeks. Those in the control group watched television for 1 h per day, five times a week for 6 weeks. Cognitive function was assessed using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) and Stroop Color and Word Test (SCWT). Clinical symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF), General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE), Problematic Mobile Gaming Questionnaire (PMGQ), and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The game group demonstrated improved RBANS total score during the trial. There were no significant group effects among all SCWT scores. The game group demonstrated greater improvement on the PANSS Negative Scale, and global function (GAF score). The PMGQ scores were lower than the cutoff score at all time points in both groups. There were no significant group differences in the PHQ-9 and GSE scores. The serum BDNF levels were significantly higher in the game group following 6 weeks of video game intervention. The BDNF serum levels of all participants were positively associated with the RBANS total scores. This preliminary study suggested that video games can improve cognitive function in schizophrenia patients. ABSTRACT

Introduction: Cortical neural progenitor cells possess the capacity to differentiate into both excitatory and inhibitory neurons. However, the precise proportions in which these progenitor cells differentiate remain unclear. Methods: Human fetal prefrontal cortical tissues were collected at various fetal stages and cultured in vitro. Bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing techniques were employed to analyze the resulting neuronal cell types, cell proportions, and the expression levels of cell-type marker genes. Results: The culture of fetal prefrontal cortex tissues obtained at gestation weeks 11 and 20 predominantly consisted of excitatory and inhibitory neurons, respectively. This abrupt transition in cell proportions was primarily driven by the differential lineage specificity of neural progenitors in the fetal cortical tissues at distinct stages of fetal brain development. Additionally, it was observed that the transcriptional profiles of cultured fetal cortical tissues were strongly influenced by the presence of FGF2. Discussion: This study presents a novel strategy to obtain excitatory and inhibitory neuronal cells from the culture of fetal cortical tissues. The findings shed light on the mechanisms underlying neurogenesis and provide an approach that might contribute to future research investigating the pathophysiology of various neural disorders.

ABSTRACT

In response to the shortcomings of existing centralized IoT detection activities, this article proposes a new IoT detection scheme based on programmable switches and deep self coding, which combines programmable switches with IoT MQTT protocol and multidimensional feature fusion algorithm. Based on this point, a comprehensive programmable switch and machine learning centralized IoT detection system are designed. This system is different from traditional centralized IoT detection systems. The IoT detection module discussed in this article is located on a programmable switch between IoT nodes and servers. This system utilizes the potential of programmable switches to quickly collect required information from packet data and pre detect fault data from the front end of the server, thereby quickly making IoT node packet processing decisions (i.e. redirecting or directly discarding) based on programmable switches to minimize the delay in transmitting data packets. Finally, in order to apply this technology to the field of sports training, we examined different directions of sports training. Therefore, based on the development of simulation systems, this article greatly enhances the practicality of such projects, effectively increasing the usage time and meeting the actual training needs. Therefore, The deep self coding computer simulation of sports training is an issue that we must pay attention to. The article conducted research on IoT detection based on deep self coding multidimensional feature fusion, and applied the research results to sports training, promoting the rapid development of sports training.

ABSTRACT

Device-to-device (D2D) communication is a promising wireless communication technology which can effectively reduce the traffic load of the base station and improve the spectral efficiency. The application of intelligent reflective surfaces (IRS) in D2D communication systems can further improve the throughput, but the problem of interference suppression becomes more complex and challenging due to the introduction of new links. Therefore, how to perform effective and low-complexity optimal radio resource allocation is still a problem to be solved in IRS-assisted D2D communication systems. To this end, a low-complexity power and phase shift joint optimization algorithm based on particle swarm optimization is proposed in this paper. First, a multivariable joint optimization problem for the uplink cellular network with IRS-assisted D2D communication is established, where multiple DUEs are allowed to share a CUE's sub-channel. However, the proposed problem considering the joint optimization of power and phase shift, with the objective of maximizing the system sum rate and the constraints of the minimum user signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), is a non-convex non-linear model and is hard to solve. Different from the existing work, instead of decomposing this optimization problem into two sub-problems and optimizing the two variables separately, we jointly optimize them based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Then, a fitness function with a penalty term is established, and a penalty value priority update scheme is designed for discrete phase shift optimization variables and continuous power optimization variables. Finally, the performance analysis and simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is close to the iterative algorithm in terms of sum rate, but lower in power consumption. In particular, when the number of D2D users is four, the power consumption is reduced by 20%. In addition, compared with PSO and distributed PSO, the sum rate of the proposed algorithm increases by about 10.2% and 38.3%, respectively, when the number of D2D users is four.

This study starts from the metabolic related indexes and cellular inflammatory factors in patients with chronic schizophrenia to find out that it can be used as an effective screening index of metabolic syndrome. 320 patients with chronic schizophrenia (course of disease > 5 years) and 165 healthy subjects were selected. The mental symptoms of the patients were measured by positive and negative syndrome scale. Blood samples from patients and healthy controls were collected to detect blood glucose, triglyceride, HDL and fasting insulin. The serum levels of IL-1ß, IL-2, IL-6, IL-17, IFN-γ and TNF-α were determined repeatedly by sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The levels of HOMA-IR, plasma inflammatory factors IL-2, IL-6, IL-17 and TNF-α in patient group were higher than those in healthy group. It was found that there were differences in age and related metabolic indexes between patients with chronic schizophrenia with and without metabolic syndrome. In addition, HOMA-IR, plasma cytokines IL-2 and IL-6 still showed differences between groups. In the Spearmen correlation analysis of insulin resistance index, cytokines and metabolic indexes, it was found that there was a significant correlation between HOMA-IR, IL-6 and related metabolic indexes and metabolic syndrome. ROC curve analysis showed that HOMAIR and IL-6 could be used as screening indexes for MS in male and female patients with schizophrenia.Metabolic syndrome is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic schizophrenia. HOMA-IR and IL-6 can be used as effective biological indicators to screen MS in patients with chronic schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal patterns exist in many disorders and even serve as potential drivers of some disorders, but in schizophrenia and affective disorders, there is no uniform conclusion on the seasonal pattern. METHODS: A total of 100,621 inpatients were surveyed in this study over 16 years, and 21,668 inpatients were ultimately included in the count after standard exclusion criteria were applied. RESULTS: There was an uneven seasonal distribution of mental illness admissions (χ2 = 48.299, df = 18, P < .001). The peak of schizophrenia admissions occurred in the winter and the trough in the spring (52.6 % vs 50 %, P < .05). The peaks for depression and bipolar disorder were in the fall and spring, respectively, while the troughs were in the winter and fall, respectively (24.7 % vs 21.7 %, P < .05; 15.2 % vs 13.2 %, P < .05). Admissions for childhood mood disorders peaked in the fall (P < .05). We also found that the length of stay was also correlated with the season of admission, and that this seasonal fluctuation was not consistent across male and female populations. LIMITATIONS: To avoid the effect of repeated hospitalizations, we maintained a registry of each patient's first admission only, which also resulted in our inability to explore the seasonal pattern of each disease recurrence at the individual level. CONCLUSIONS: We found that the seasonal distribution of psychiatric admissions was not uniform. And there was also an uneven seasonal distribution of length of stay for patients admitted in different seasons. This may imply that certain environmental factors that vary with the seasons are potential drivers of mental illness.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: People with depression appear to experience higher levels of childhood maltreatment (CM) and suicidal behaviour. However, no studies have discussed the factors through which CM influences suicidal ideation (SI) in adolescents with depression. The present study examined the effects of alexithymia and insomnia on the relationship between CM and SI in a population of Chinese adolescents with depression. METHODS: A total of 262 adolescents with depression (198 females) completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20, the Insomnia Severity Index, and the Positive and Negative Suicide Ideation. RESULTS: With the exception of sexual abuse (SA), four types of CM were associated with SI in depressed individuals. The highest incidence was found for physical neglect (PN) (65.27 %). Alexithymia and insomnia were both positively associated with SI. Externally oriented thinking (EOT) and insomnia had significant mediating effects on the relationship between emotional abuse (EA) and SI. EOT and insomnia also had significant mediating effects on the relationship between physical neglect (PN) and SI. LIMITATIONS: The major limitations of this study include the impacts of cross-sectional studies and recall bias on the results. CONCLUSIONS: Alexithymia and insomnia have an impact on SI in adolescents with depression who have experienced CM. Therefore, we should be aware of the impact of alexithymia and insomnia on depression patients. Rates of suicide among adolescents with depression should be reduced by identifying targeted measures.

Purpose: There is a lack of rigorous experimental evidence to verify the effects of bubble tea on body weight and mental health, especially whether it is an addictive thing. Materials and methods: Male adult C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned to two groups, including the bubble-tea and the control group. The change in their body weight was calculated. Behavior tests include novel object recognition test (NORT), elevated plus maze test (EPMT), forced swim test (FST), tail suspension test (TST), conditioned place preference (CPP). Results: There was a significant time effect on weight change of the two groups (F = 36.83, P < 0.01). The bubble tea-treated mice spent significantly less time in the open arms, indicating an increase in anxiety (t = 2.39, P = 0.03). In FST, bubble tea treatment produced a significantly increased immobility time (186.58 ± 29.67 s) as compared to pure water treated group (112.50 ± 46.67 s) (t = -3.79, P < 0.01). Similarly, the immobility time in the TST was also significantly increased by bubble tea treatment (437.63 ± 27.72 s) compared to the treatment with pure water (340.24 ± 77.22 s) (t = -3.36, P < 0.01). We investigated the rewarding effects of bubble tea, using the CPP paradigm, which measures the rewarding properties of abused drugs. Independent-samples t-test revealed no significant difference between the two groups (t = -0.47, P = 0.65). Conclusion: In conclusion, we showed that long-term administration of bubble tea could not induce addictive behavior in mice. Meanwhile, the long-term effects of bubble tea on weight were also very limited. However, long-term consumption of bubble tea can lead to anxiety and depression-like behaviors and impair cognitive function in mice.

ABSTRACT

The incision of the Sanmen Gorge marks the birth of the modern Yellow River, but its timing varies from the late Miocene-early Pliocene to the late Pleistocene (∼0.15 Ma), and the suggested forcing mechanisms vary from the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau to global climate change. Here, we report sedimentologic, geochronologic, and provenance data from a drill core near the Sanmen Gorge, the last gorge along the main course of the Yellow River. Our results indicate that typical river channel deposits, with detritus from the Ordos Block in the upstream regions, started to accumulate in the Sanmen Gorge at ∼1.25 Ma. When integrated with river terrace evidence from the upstream and downstream regions, the results provide robust evidence that the final integration of the modern Yellow River occurred at ∼1.25 Ma, consistent with the beginning of the Mid-Pleistocene transition (MPT). We propose that the accelerated lowering of eustatic sea level during the MPT may play as important a role as tectonism in driving the birth and evolution of the modern Yellow River.

ABSTRACT

The annual planting area of major inbred rice (Oryza sativa) cultivars reach more than half of the total annual planting area of inbred rice cultivars in China. However, how the major inbred rice cultivars changed during decades of genetic improvement and why they can be prevalently cultivated in China remains unclear. Here, we investigated the underlying genetic changes of major inbred cultivars and the contributions of landraces and introduced cultivars during the improvement by resequencing a collection of 439 rice accessions including major inbred cultivars, landraces, and introduced cultivars. The results showed that landraces were the main genetic contribution sources of major inbred Xian (Indica) cultivars, while introduced cultivars were that of major inbred Geng (Japonica) cultivars. Selection scans and haplotype frequency analysis shed light on the reflections of some well-known genes in rice improvement, and breeders had different preferences for the Xian's and Geng's breeding. Six candidate regions associated with agronomic traits were identified by genome-wide association mapping, five of which were under positive selection in rice improvement. Our study provides a comprehensive insight into the development of major inbred rice cultivars and lays the foundation for genomics-based breeding in rice.

ABSTRACT

The association of IFN-γ receptor 1 (IFNGR1) gene polymorphisms with tuberculosis (TB) susceptibility has not been systematically studied. We therefore conducted a meta-analysis to assess their association. Literature search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) was pooled by the random-effect model. Statistical analyses were performed using STATA 12.0 software. Fourteen studies involved 7,699 TB cases and 8,289 controls were included in this meta-analysis. A significant association was found between the IFNGR1 rs2234711 polymorphism and TB susceptibility among Africans in dominant model (OR = 1.24, 95%CI:1.01-1.52), and among Asians in allele model (OR = 0.89, 95%CI: 0.79-0.99), homozygote model (OR = 0.82, 95%CI: 0.70-0.98) and additive model (OR = 0.90, 95%CI: 0.83-0.97). In addition, a significant association was observed between the IFNGR1 rs7749390 polymorphism and TB susceptibility among Africans in allele model (OR = 0.89, 95%CI: 0.82-0.98). No significant association was found between the IFNGR1 rs1327474 polymorphism and TB susceptibility. In summary, IFNGR1 rs2234711 polymorphism was associated with increased TB susceptibility in Africans and decreased TB susceptibility in Asians, while IFNGR1 rs7749390 polymorphism was associated with decreased TB susceptibility in Africans.
