ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: This case report is intended to present an unusual cause of urinary retention by a congenital vaginal obstruction, such as hematocolpos. Hematocolpos is an obstruction of the menstrual flow due to an anomaly of the genital tract, with imperforate hymen being the most common one. CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-year-old female patient, was referred to our emergency department for recurrent abdominal pain lasting approximately 90 days. She presented with intermittent dysuria and supra pubic fullness. Ultrasonography confirmed acute urinary retention and features of hematocolpos [7]. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: High index of suspicion is necessary to diagnose and treat such patients promptly. Patients usually present with cyclic pain, primary amenorrhea, incomplete emptying of urine, chronic constipation, back pain and recurrent urinary tract infections. Our patient presented with acute urinary retention. CONCLUSION: This case report highlights the importance of early recognition of hematocolpos as a potential cause of cyclic pain, and urinary symptoms. Prompt and accurate diagnosis with the appropriate surgical managements, to resolve their symptoms with successful outcomes.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) of the prostate is a rare disease, and it has a poor prognosis. Mostly patient come with late stage thus with delayed diagnosis and worse outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: a 35-year-old Bangladeshi male presented with bladder outlet obstruction in an intermittent pattern. Patient was not complaining from any other urological symptoms, there was no hematuria or dysuria, even no constitutional symptoms, no history of weight loss, no anorexia or night rigors, also there was no history of fever. Patients have an only previous history of spinal screw without any other medical illnesses. Patient came to casualty with frequent visits without any inflammatory markers elevation even with normal biochemical labs. O/E he found to have a prostatic mass on PR examination of which patient admitted to urology department and underwent diagnostic cystoscopy which showed cauliflower mass at the prostatic urethra. Biopsies retrieved and showed embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the prostate under the histopathological examination. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) mostly care a poor prognosis and modalities vary according to the presentation and the stage. However distant metastasis is common at the time of presentation. CONCLUSION: embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the prostate is a rare and aggressive tumor with a low survival rate in adults. However, more clinical data needed for a better outcome.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Cholangiocarcinoma has poor prognosis and short term-survival. Here, we report the case of a patient with unusually prolonged survival. CASE PRESENTATION: Our patient was a 56-year-old Arab man with a 6-month history of obstructive jaundice. A computed tomography scan of his abdomen revealed a mass at the confluence of the hepatic ducts with suspected malignant strictures on endoscopy. A positive tissue diagnosis was achieved more than 18 months after commencement of his symptoms. He remained functional throughout this period despite recurrent episodes of cholangitis. CONCLUSIONS: Cholangiocarcinoma is a presumably fatal disease, especially because patients tend to present late with unresectable disease. Many patient-related and disease-related factors may alter survival.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of smoking, knowledge about the ill effects of smoking on health, and the influence of family members' smoking habits among Saudi female students. METHODS: This is a type of cross-sectional study. A sample of 1,070 female students was selected by a nonrandom and convenient sampling method from five colleges (Medicine, Business and Administration, Computer Sciences, Education, and Languages and Translation) of King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A self-administrated questionnaire was used to determine the personal, social, and educational characteristics of the respondents. In addition, questions about their smoking types, status, duration of smoking, knowledge about the ill effects of smoking, daily cigarette consumption, and reasons for quitting smoking were included. RESULTS: The students' response rate was 85%. The prevalence of current smoking was 4.3% and 5.6% for cigarettes and water-pipes, respectively, whereas 3.9% of the participants were ex-smokers. The prevalence of current smoking was highest in the College of Business and Administration (10.81%) and lowest in the College of Medicine (0.86%). The majority (77%) of the smokers' parents (current and ex-smokers) were also smokers. More than half (54%) of the smokers started their smoking habit for entertainment, and 44.4% of the participants did not know that smoking causes serious health problems. The most common factors for quitting smoking were health concerns (54%), religious beliefs (29%), and parent's advice (17%). CONCLUSION: The study concludes that the prevalence of smoking varies in different subject streams and that family and friends have a great influence on individuals starting or stopping smoking. Extensive health education programs are needed to educate young women on the health hazards of smoking and help stop them from smoking.

ABSTRACT

Solitary epithelioid histiocytoma (previously called reticulohistiocytoma) is a rare benign dermal histiocytic proliferation characterized by the presence of large, eosinophilic histiocytes with 'glassy' cytoplasm. This entity assumes importance because of its close histologic resemblance to several benign as well as malignant cutaneous lesions. Involvement of the penis is extremely rare, and to our knowledge, only one case has been previously described in the literature. We report a case of solitary epithelioid histiocytoma in a 34-year-old man who presented with a nodule in the glans penis. Microscopy showed proliferation of large epithelioid histiocytes with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, which expressed CD68, CD163 and vimentin. This case highlights the significance of recognizing this unusual lesion and differentiating it from its histologic mimics.

ABSTRACT

Osteosarcoma OS of the talus is extremely rare, and few cases have been reported in the literature. We present a case of a 33-year-old male with painful swelling of his left ankle joint. He underwent several radiological diagnostic modalities that showed osteolytic lesion in the posterior aspect of the left talus associated with new bone formation projecting from the posterior-medial aspect of that bone. His chest x-ray showed multiple rounded lung metastases, some of them showed calcifications. Open biopsy was performed. The histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of osteoblastic OS of the talus.
