ABSTRACT

In the last few decays, the fiber-optic was employed in the field of sensing because of its benefits in contrast to other types of sensors such as small size, easy to fabricate, high response, and flexibility. In this study, unclad single mode fiber-optic sensor is proposed to operate at 650 nm wavelength. COMSOL Multiphysics 5.1 finite element method (FEM) is used to design the sensor and tested it theoretically. The middle portion of the fiber cladding is removed and replaced by gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) of 50 nm thickness. Analytic layer of 3 µm thickness was immersed in different liquids in range of refractive index (RI) from 1.000281 to 1.39. These liquids are NaCl Deionized (DI) water solution, sucrose-Deionized (DI) water solution, and glycerol solution Deionized (DI) water. It was found that the highest obtained sensitivity and resolution are for glycerol-DI water solution with value of 3157.98 (nm/RIU) and 3.16 × 10-5 (RIU), respectively. Furthermore, it is easy to fabricate and of low cost. In experiments, pulsed laser ablation (PLA) was used to prepare Au NPs. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shown that the peak of the intensity grew as the ablated energy increased as well as the structure crystallization. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed an average diameter of 30 nm at the three ablated energies, while X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) spectrum has indicated the presence of Au NPs in the prepared solution. The photoluminescence (PL) and ultraviolet-visible UV-Vis transmission were used to study the optical properties of the prepared Au NPs. An optical spectrum analyzer was used to obtain the sensor's output results. It has shown that best intensity was obtained for sucrose which confined with theoretical results.

ABSTRACT

Despite the economic importance of grass-based livestock production in Ireland and the fact that many veterinarians and farmers regard tickborne fever (TBF) as an increasingly important disease, especially in sheep, little is currently known about the prevalence and genetic diversity of its causative agent, Anaplasma phagocytophilum. In the present study, 1376 nymphal Ixodes ricinus ticks collected from woodland, farmland, bog and limestone pavement habitats were screened for A. phagocytophilum using TaqMan PCR. Positive samples were further analysed by conventional nested PCR targeting the 16S rRNA, msp4 and groEL loci. Overall 4.5% I. ricinus nymphs were found to be infected. The genetic heterogeneity was comparable to that reported elsewhere in Europe, with greater genetic diversity of 16S variants in ticks collected from farmland than from woodland. All isolates belonged to groEL ecotype I indicating that rodents and birds do not contribute to the epidemiology of tickborne fever in Ireland. In the 16S and groEL loci, a number of the Irish isolates matched European sequences from humans, horses and dogs. The 16S sequences that were identical to human isolates from Europe also matched Ap-ha, the most common human pathogenic strain in the USA. Three isolates also matched published sequences from horses in the msp4 locus. No isolate matched human, equine and canine sequences in all 3 loci. Our results represent the first molecular characterization of Irish A. phagocytophilum isolates.

ABSTRACT

Titanium wear is a growing area of interest within dental implantology. This study aimed to investigate titanium and zirconium wear from dental implants at the time of insertion using X-ray-fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and an in vitro protocol utilizing artificial bovine bone plates. Five groups were analyzed using XRF-spectrometry: groups 1-4 (titanium implants) and group 5 (zirconia implants). The implants were inserted into two bone blocks held together by a vice. The blocks were separated, and the insertion sites were analyzed for titanium (Ti) and zirconium (Zr). Statistical descriptive analyses of Ti and Zr concentrations in the coronal, middle and apical bone interface were performed. A comparative analysis confirmed differences between the implant's surface stability and Ti accumulation within the insertion sites of the bone block. There was a direct relationship between implant length and the quantity of titanium found on the bone block. The data generally indicates greater quantities of titanium in the coronal thirds of the implants, and less in the apical thirds. The titanium and zirconium found in the bone samples where the group 5 implants were inserted was not of statistical significance when compared to control osteotomies. The results of this study confirm wear from metallic, but not ceramic, dental implants at the time of insertion.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Endothelial cells provide a unique medium for the proliferation and white lineage differentiation of haematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC). Whether this quality can be exploited to facilitate the differentiation of erythroid precursors is not yet known. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Haematopoietic progenitor cells derived from cord blood were cultured for 3 weeks in erythropoietin-stimulated supernatants with (n = 6) or without cyclosporine A (CSA, n = 6). Cell count, phenotype and morphology were assessed on a weekly basis, and the haemoglobin content was analysed. These cultures were compared with erythroid differentiation induced by cytokines only (n = 6). RESULTS: Endothelial supernatants combined with CSA led to equivalent numbers of CD71(+) erythroblasts after 1 week as cytokines only. The purity of glycophorin-positive, CD45-negative cells was higher in cells generated in endothelial supernatants than in cytokine-based media. Additional prostaglandin E2 induced a change from fetal to adult haemoglobin. CONCLUSION: For the generation of erythroblasts from HPC, endothelial supernatants are a simple and cost-effective alternative to culture conditions based on cytokines.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Venous compression of the lower limbs will obstruct outflow through the deep and superficial veins, yet inflow will continue, without continual swelling of the limb. It is hypothesised that venous channels in the long bones act as collateral channels to restore outflow, and therefore general blood flow through bone will increase. Such a hemodynamic change should affect the uptake of radiopharmaceuticals by the bone, though uptake changes in themselves would not definitely indicate flow changes. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to determine whether bone uptake in the lower limb is affected by intermittent venous compression, irrespective of the mechanism involved. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The effect of intermittent pneumatic compression of the thigh and calf on the uptake of (99m)Tc-methylene diphosphonate (MDP) was studied in 24 patients. All were undergoing routine bone imaging for medical conditions that were not focused on their lower limbs, and received 1 h of the therapy at 60 mmHg on one limb only, after injection of the radiopharmaceutical. Three hours after injection the relative difference in uptake (net counts per pixel) between the two limbs was calculated. The standard imaging protocol was otherwise unchanged. RESULTS: The median differences in uptake in the intermittently compressed limb compared with the contralateral limb were +7.6% (interquartile range +3.9% to +16.0%, p<0.0005 [Wilcoxon]) for the anterior aspect of the femur; +11.7% (interquartile range +4.3% to +22.2%, p<0.0005) posterior, femur; +10.5% (interquartile range +6.5% to +13.8%, p<0.0005) anterior, tibia; +10.6% (interquartile range +5.5% to +17.6%, p<0.0005) posterior, tibia. CONCLUSION: Intermittent pneumatic compression clearly and significantly increased the uptake of (99m)Tc-MDP in long bones. These data are consistent with increases in blood flow through bone, though a direct mechanical influence on the bone cannot be excluded. This effect should be given consideration during routine therapeutic and thromboprophylactic use of intermittent compression, and if the mechanism of the uptake changes can be established, their possible clinical uses should be investigated.

ABSTRACT

We describe a case of pertrochanteric stress fracture in a 62-year-old woman due to a sudden increase in medium distance running. Symptoms started after 11 weeks. The diagnosis was made six months after debut of symptoms. The x-ray revealed a pertrochanteric fracture which had healed in 105 degrees of varus.
