ABSTRACT

We report a case of adrenal insufficiency in patient with lung cancer. Although adrenal metastases are common in cancer patients, adrenal insufficiency is a rare occurrence. Diagnosis and treatment of adrenal insufficiency will improve the physical status and the quality of life in those patients.

ABSTRACT

It is now widely accepted that Helicobacter pylori may play a role in several extra-gastric diseases. In particular, H. pylori infection seems to be implicated in various autoimmune diseases. Many recent studies have shown a healing or an improvement in different autoimmune disorders after H. pylori eradication therapy in infected patients. The exact mechanisms behind this relationship remain under discussion, but molecular mimicry is a consistent hypothesis. This subject is particularly relevant taking into consideration the high prevalence of H. pylori infection, the existence of inexpensive and noninvasive diagnostic methods, as the urea breath test or the stool antigen test, and the low cost and toxicity of eradication treatment. If this connection becomes confirmed, it can change the diagnostic and therapeutic approach of some autoimmune diseases.

ABSTRACT

Aseptic liver abscesses preceding the diagnosis of Crohn's disease are extremely rare. We report a patient with multiple liver abscesses that yielded negative microbiologic investigation and failed to develop full remission under antibiotic therapy. Diagnosis of Crohn's disease of small and large bowel was later established and she was started on sulfasalazine and azathioprine with total regression of the hepatic abscesses. This case illustrates the rare possibility of aseptic liver abscesses as an initial manifestation of Crohn's disease, which could be interpreted in the light of recent data on aberrant homing of gut T memory/effector lymphocytes in the liver.

ABSTRACT

The authors report a case of pulmonary MALT lymphoma in an asymptomatic patient with a chest radiograph showing bilateral infiltrates. The diagnosis was made by surgical lung biopsy performed by video-assisted thoracoscopy. The transbronchial lung and the transthoracic core-needle biopsies were non-diagnostic. The clinical and radiological features of the pulmonary MALT lymphoma are described and relevant diagnostic, prognostic and treatment factors are discussed.
