ABSTRACT

Membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) is challenged by biofilm thickness control and phosphorus removal. Air scouring aided by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was employed to detach outer biofilm in sequencing batch MABR treating low C/N wastewater. Biofilm with 177-285 µm thickness in cycle 5-15 achieved over 85 % chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removals at loading rate of 13.2 gCOD/m2/d and 2.64 gNH4+-N/m2/d. Biofilm rheology measurements in cycle 10-25 showed yield stress against detachment of 2.8-7.4 Pa, which were equal to CFD calculated shear stresses under air scouring flowrate of 3-9 L/min. Air scouring reduced effluent NH4+-N by 10 % and biofilm thickness by 78 µm. Intermittent aeration (4h off, 19.5h on) and air scouring (3 L/min, 30 s before settling) in one cycle achieved COD removal over 90 %, TIN and PO43--P removals over 80 %, showing great potential for simultaneous carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus removals.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the effect of Modified Shenqi Dihuang Decoction (MSDD) on human hormone-sensitive LNCaP prostate cancer cells and its action mechanism. METHODS: LNCaP prostate cancer cells were treated with MSDD, followed by detection of the proliferation and apoptosis of the cells by MTT assay and flow cytometry respectively and measurement of glucose uptake and lactate production by glucose uptake assay and colorimetry respectively. The expressions of the apoptosis-related proteins Bcl-2, Bax and cleaved-caspase-3, glycolysis-related proteins HK2, GLUT1, PKM2 and LDHA, and PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway-related proteins in the LNCaP cells were determined by Western blot. The effect of MSDD on the LNCaP cells was observed with the glycolysis inducer oligomycin and the PI3K activator 740 Y-P. RESULTS: MSDD inhibited the proliferation, induced the apoptosis, increased the levels of Bax and cleaved-caspase 3 and decreased the level of Bcl-2 in the LNCaP cells in a dose-dependent manner. After MSDD intervention, the glucose uptake and lactate production in the LNCaP cells were significantly reduced, the expressions of HK2, GLUT1, PKM2 and LDHA and the phosphorylation levels of Akt, PI3K and mTOR were markedly suppressed. Oligomycin and 740 Y-P reversed the inhibitory effect of MSDD on the proliferation of the LNCaP cells, and 740 Y-P reversed that on glucose uptake, lactic acid production and the expressions of the glycolysis-related proteins HK2, GLUT1, PKM2 and LDHA in the LNCaP cells. CONCLUSIONS: Modified Shenqi Dihuang Decoction inhibits the proliferation of LNCaP prostate cancer cells by suppressing glycolysis and the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway.

ABSTRACT

Because of direct π-π interactions and excessive energy resonance transfer, it is very challenging to prepare carbon dots (CDs) with a high fluorescence quantum yield (QY) in the solid state. In this study, novel CDs which gave solid-state fluorescence (SSF) with high brightness were successfully prepared via a simple microwave-assisted method. The prepared ScCDs can emit strong blue fluorescence in the solid state, and the absolute QY of this ScCDs powder reaches 51.7%. Such a high QY means that the ScCDs powder could be successfully applied in rapid latent fingerprint (LFP) detection. The LFP detection performance of this ScCDs powder was studied in detail, and the results show that the LFPs developed using the ScCDs powder can be visualized with high definition and contrast under different conditions. This research not only developed a new type of SSF-emitting CDs, but it also proved that the developed CDs have great potential for applications in LFP detection, and this research may also provide inspiration and ideas for the design of new SSF-emitting CDs.
