ABSTRACT

Organic-hybrid particle-based materials are increasingly important in (opto)electronics, sensing, and catalysis due to their printability and stretchability as well as their potential for unique synergistic functional effects. However, these functional properties are often limited due to poor electronic coupling between the organic shell and the nanoparticle. N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) belong to the most promising anchors to achieve electronic delocalization across the interface, as they form robust and highly conductive bonds with metals and offer a plethora of functionalization possibilities. Despite the outstanding potential of the conductive NHC-metal bond, synthetic challenges have so far limited its application to the improvement of colloidal stabilities, disregarding the potential of the conductive anchor. Here, NHC anchors are used to modify redox-active gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with conjugated triphenylamines (TPA). The resulting AuNPs exhibit excellent thermal and redox stability benefiting from the robust NHC-gold bond. As electrochromic materials, the hybrid materials show pronounced color changes from red to dark green, a highly stable cycling stability (1000 cycles), and a fast response speed (5.6 s/2.1 s). Furthermore, TPA-NHC@AuNP exhibits an ionization potential of 5.3 eV and a distinct out-of-plane conductivity, making them a promising candidate for application as hole transport layers in optoelectronic devices.

ABSTRACT

Yang-deficiency constitution (YADC) is linked to a higher vulnerability to various diseases, such as cold coagulation and blood stasis (CCBS) syndrome and infertility. Endometrial hyperplastic processes (EHPs) are a leading cause of infertility in women and are characterized by CCBS. However, it remains unclear whether YADC is related to the development of EHPs. METHODS: We recruited 202 EHPs patients including 147 with YADC (YEH group) and 55 with non-YADC (NYEH group). Fecal samples were collected from 8 YEH patients and 3 NYEH patients and analyzed using 16S rRNA V3-V4 sequencing for gut microbiota analysis. We obtained constitution survey data and a differential gut microbiota dataset from the literature for further analysis. Bioinformatics analysis was conducted using gut microbiota-related genes from public databases. RESULTS: YADC was significantly more prevalent in EHPs than non-YADC (P < 0.001), suggesting it as a potential risk factor for EHPs occurrence (ORpopulation survey = 13.471; ORhealthy women = 5.173). The YEH group had higher levels of inflammation, estrogen, and tamoxifen-related flora compared to NYEH and healthy YADC groups. There was an interaction between inflammation, estrogen, differential flora, and EHPs-related genes, particularly the TNF gene (related to inflammation) and the EGFR gene (related to estrogen), which may play a crucial role in EHPs development. CONCLUSION: YEH individuals exhibit significant changes in their gut microbiota compared to NYEH and healthy YADC. The interaction between specific microbiota and host genes is believed to play a critical role in the progression of EHPs.

ABSTRACT

The rapid advancements in large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT have raised concerns about their potential impact on academic integrity. While initial concerns focused on ChatGPT's writing capabilities, recent updates have integrated DALL-E 3's image generation features, extending the risks to visual evidence in biomedical research. Our tests revealed ChatGPT's nearly barrier-free image generation feature can be used to generate experimental result images, such as blood smears, Western Blot, immunofluorescence and so on. Although the current ability of ChatGPT to generate experimental images is limited, the risk of misuse is evident. This development underscores the need for immediate action. We suggest that AI providers restrict the generation of experimental image, develop tools to detect AI-generated images, and consider adding "invisible watermarks" to the generated images. By implementing these measures, we can better ensure the responsible use of AI technology in academic research and maintain the integrity of scientific evidence.

ABSTRACT

Nutritional status is an essential factor in the occurrence of complications in patients with esophageal cancer. We sought to assess the relationship between malnutrition and complications using various nutritional assessment indicators. We conducted a comprehensive literature search of medical databases for articles published up to July 2023. The primary outcome indicator is the occurrence of complications, for which we combined 95% confidence intervals (CIs) and odds ratios (ORs) for postoperative complications and analyzed them using a random effects model. The analysis was carried out using STATA15.0 software. A total of 33 study groups from 22 publications with 5,675 subjects were included. Pooled results show that nutritional indicators are strongly correlated with the occurrence of postoperative complications (OR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.30-1.62). In the subgroup analyses, comprehensive indicators and the skeletal muscle index were significantly associated with complications, whereas laboratory indicators were not associated with complications (comprehensive indicators OR = 2.68, 95% CI: 1.80-4.00; skeletal muscle index OR = 2.93, 95% CI: 1.44-5.99; laboratory indicators OR = 1.05, 95% CI: 0.96-1.16). Patients with normal body mass index and hospitalized patients were more likely to develop complications. Malnutrition is strongly associated with the development of complications. Nutritional indicators and patient characteristics influenced this relationship.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To describe the disease burden of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) globally, regionally, and in 204 countries by age, sex, and sociodemographic index (SDI) from 1990 to 2019, and to explore cross-national inequalities across SDI. METHODS: The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 database collected data on KOA worldwide from 1990 to 2019, including prevalence, incidence, years lived with disability (YLDs). The average annual percentage change (AAPC) was used to measure temporal trends. In addition, the inequality slope index and the health concentration index were calculated to quantify the unequal distribution of the burden of KOA across 204 countries worldwide. RESULTS: In 2019, the global age-standardized prevalence rate increased by 7.5% compared with 1990, and the age-standardized incidence rate increased by about 6.2%; The age-standardized YLDs rate increased by about 7.8%. In addition to the Republic of Korea and the United States of America, the disease burden of KOA has increased year by year in other countries around the world. The incidence of KOA was highest at ages 50-59, while the prevalence and rates of YLDs were highest at ages 75-84. The burden of KOA was higher in women than in men. Cross-country inequality suggests that the inequality in the burden of KOA between high SDI and low SDI countries becomes greater, and that countries with high SDI bear a disproportionately high burden. CONCLUSION: The global KOA burden has risen steadily between 1990 and 2019, and cross-national inequality gaps remain large. Targeted measures must therefore be taken to address this inequality and the increasing global KOA disease burden.

ABSTRACT

The fear response is a crucial adaptive mechanism for coping with environmental changes, and the individuals have different levels of fearfulness. The purpose of this study was to determine the status of the immune response and gut health in hens with different fear responses. A total of 80 healthy 75-wk-old native Lindian chickens were individually housed in conventional cages and categorized into high (TH) and low (TL) levels of fearfulness using the tonic immobility (TI) test. The immunological status and intestinal health of the laying hens were assessed, and the intestinal microbial community was sequenced using 16S rRNA testing. The results showed that the immune-related genes of interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-4, IL-6, and IgG were significantly upregulated in the spleen of TH hens compared with hens in the TL group (P < 0.01). The inflammatory immune-related genes Toll-like receptor (TLR)2, TLR4, nuclear factor (NF)-κB, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase (COX)-2, IL-10, and IgG were significantly increased in the intestinal tract, whereas IL-4, IgA, and the intestinal barrier gene claudin-4 were significantly decreased in TH hens (P < 0.05). In addition, serum concentrations of IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-10, interferon (IFN)-α and IgG were significantly higher in TH hens (P < 0.01). A high fear response also led to changes in gut microbial diversity, with a higher Simpson's index and lower ß-diversity similarity than hens with a low-fear response (P < 0.05). The TH group showed an increase in 8 genera, including Bacillaceae and Coprococcus, whereas the genus Anaerorhabdus decreased (P < 0.05). The gut microbiota has also been associated with gut barrier genes, and inflammatory cytokines. Bartonella stimulates IL-1ß and IgG secretion, whereas Lactobacillus inhibits IL-6 secretion, and Coprococcus and Subdoligranulum are associated with the maintenance of intestinal barrier function. The results of this study suggest that laying hens with high fear response levels have a more sensitive immune response and a more enriched gut microbiota, which may have positive effects on adapting to a complex environment.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the imaging characteristics of cervical kyphosis and spinal cord compression in cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) with cervical kyphosis and the influence on effectiveness. Methods: The clinical data of 36 patients with single-segment CSM with cervical kyphosis who were admitted between January 2020 and December 2022 and met the selection criteria were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into 3 groups according to the positional relationship between the kyphosis focal on cervical spine X-ray film and the spinal cord compression point on MRI: the same group (group A, 20 cases, both points were in the same position), the adjacent group (group B, 10 cases, both points were located adjacent to each other), and the separated group (group C, 6 cases, both points were located >1 vertebra away from each other). There was no significant difference between groups ( P>0.05) in baseline data such as gender, age, body mass index, lesion segment, disease duration, and preoperative C 2-7 angle, C 2-7 sagittal vertical axis (C 2-7 SVA), C 7 slope (C 7S), kyphotic Cobb angle, fusion segment height, and Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) score. The patients underwent single-segment anterior cervical discectomy with fusion (ACDF). The occurrence of postoperative complications was recorded; preoperatively and at last follow-up, the patients' neurological function was evaluated using the JOA score, and the sagittal parameters (C 2-7 angle, C 2-7 SVA, C 7S, kyphotic Cobb angle, and height of the fused segments) were measured on cervical spine X-ray films and MRI and the correction rate of the cervical kyphosis was calculated; the correlation between changes in cervical sagittal parameters before and after operation and the JOA score improvement rate was analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis. Results: In 36 patients, only 1 case of dysphagia occurred in group A, and the dysphagia symptoms disappeared at 3 days after operation, and the remaining patients had no surgery-related complications during the hospitalization. All patients were followed up 12-42 months, with a mean of 20.1 months; the difference in follow-up time between the groups was not significant ( P>0.05). At last follow-up, all the imaging indicators and JOA scores of patients in the 3 groups were significantly improved when compared with preoperative ones ( P<0.05). The correction rate of cervical kyphosis in group A was significantly better than that in group C, and the improvement rate of JOA score was significantly better than that in groups B and C, all showing significant differences ( P<0.05), and there was no significant difference between the other groups ( P>0.05). The correlation analysis showed that the improvement rate of JOA score was negatively correlated with C 2-7 angle and kyphotic Cobb angle at last follow-up ( r=-0.424, P=0.010; r=-0.573, P<0.001), and positively correlated with the C 7S and correction rate of cervical kyphosis at last follow-up ( r=0.336, P=0.045; r=0.587, P<0.001), and no correlation with the remaining indicators ( P>0.05). Conclusion: There are three main positional relationships between the cervical kyphosis focal and the spinal cord compression point on imaging, and they have different impacts on the effectiveness and sagittal parameters after ACDF, and those with the same position cervical kyphosis focal and spinal cord compression point have the best improvement in effectiveness and sagittal parameters.

ABSTRACT

The dysregulation of lipid metabolism poses a significant health threat, necessitating immediate dietary intervention. Our previous research unveiled the prebiotic-like properties of theabrownin. This study aimed to further investigate the theabrownin-gut microbiota interactions and their downstream effects on lipid metabolism using integrated physiological, genomic, metabolomic, and transcriptomic approaches. The results demonstrated that theabrownin significantly ameliorated dyslipidemia, hepatic steatosis, and systemic inflammation induced by a high-fat/high-cholesterol diet (HFD). Moreover, theabrownin significantly improved HFD-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis and induced significant alterations in microbiota-derived metabolites. Additionally, the detailed interplay between theabrownin and gut microbiota was revealed. Analysis of hepatic transcriptome indicated that FoxO and PPAR signaling pathways played pivotal roles in response to theabrownin-gut microbiota interactions, primarily through upregulating hepatic Foxo1, Prkaa1, Pck1, Cdkn1a, Bcl6, Klf2, Ppara, and Pparg, while downregulating Ccnb1, Ccnb2, Fabp3, and Plin1. These findings underscored the critical role of gut-liver axis in theabrownin-mediated improvements in lipid metabolism disorders and supported the potential of theabrownin as an effective prebiotic compound for targeted regulation of metabolic diseases.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Specific treatment for diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is still lacking, and acupuncture may relieve the symptoms. We intend to investigate the efficacy and safety of electro-acupuncture (EA) in alleviating symptoms associated with DPN in diabetes. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This multicentre, three-armed, participant- and assessor-blind, randomised, sham-controlled trial will recruit 240 eligible participants from four hospitals in China and will randomly assign (1:1:1) them to EA, sham acupuncture (SA) or usual care (UC) group. Participants in the EA and SA groups willl receive either 24-session EA or SA treatment over 8 weeks, followed by an 8-week follow-up period, while participants in the UC group will be followed up for 16 weeks. The primary outcome of this trial is the change in DPN symptoms from baseline to week 8, as rated by using the Total Symptom Score. The scale assesses four symptoms: pain, burning, paraesthesia and numbness, by evaluating the frequency and severity of each. All results will be analysed with the intention-to-treat population. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The protocol has been approved by the Ethics Committee of the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (Identifier: 2022BZYLL0509). Every participant will be informed of detailed information about the study before signing informed consent. The results of this trial will be published in a peer-reviewed journal. ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to describe a novel growth guidance system, which can avoid metal debris and reduce the sliding friction forces, and test the durability and glidability of the system by in vitro test. METHOD: Two major modifications were made to the traditional Shilla system, including the use of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) gaskets to avoid direct contact between the screw and rod, and polishing the surface of the sliding part of the rod. We tested the durability of the system by a fatigue test, which the samples were test on the MTS system for a 10 million cycle of a constant displacement. Pre and post-testing involved weighing the UHMWPE gaskets and observing the wear conditions. The sliding ability were measured by a sliding displacement test. The maximum sliding displacement of the system was measured after a 300 cycles of dynamic compressive loads in a sinusoidal waveform. RESULTS: After the fatigue test, all the UHMWPE gaskets samples showed some of the fretting on the edge of the inner sides, but its still isolated and avoided the friction between the screws and rods. There was no production of metallic fretting around the sliding screws and rods. The average wear mass of the UHMWPE gaskets was 0.002 ± 0.001 g, less than 1.7% of the original mass. In the sliding test, the novel growth guidance system demonstrated the best sliding ability, with an average maximum sliding distance(AMSD) of 35.75 ± 5.73 mm, significantly better than the group of the traditional Shilla technique(AMSD 3.65 ± 0.46 mm, P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, we modified the Shilla technique and designed a novel growth guidance system by changing the friction interface of sliding screw and rod, which may significantly reduce the metallic debris and promote spine growth. The fatigue test and sliding dislocation test demonstrated the better durability and glidability of the system. An in vivo animal experiment should be performed to further verify the system.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore the benefit the metastasectomy for patients with metastatic non-clear cell carcinoma (non-ccRCC). METHODS: This study enrolled 120 patients with confirmed metastatic non-ccRCC from the RCC database of our center from 2008 to 2021. Patients without metastasectomy were grouped as radical nephrectomy without metastasectomy patients. The clinical outcomes included overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier analyses were used to assess potential factors that predict clinical benefits from metastasectomy. RESULTS: A total of 100 patients received radical nephrectomy alone, while the remaining 20 patients underwent both radical nephrectomy and metastasectomy. There was no significant difference in age between the two groups. Out of 100 patients who underwent radical nephrectomy, 60 were male, and out of 20 patients who had both radical nephrectomy and metastasectomy, 12 were male. Patients who underwent systemic therapy plus radical nephrectomy and metastasectomy had significantly better PFS (27.1 vs. 14.0, p = 0.032) and OS (67.3 vs. 24.0, p = 0.043) than those who underwent systemic therapy plus radical nephrectomy alone. Furthermore, for patients without liver metastasis (n = 54), systemic therapy plus radical nephrectomy and metastasectomy improved both PFS (p = 0.028) and OS (p = 0.043). Similarly, for patients with metachronous metastasis, systemic therapy plus radical nephrectomy and metastasectomy improved both PFS (p = 0.043) and OS (p = 0.032). None of the patients experienced serious perioperative complications (Clavien-Dindo Classification ≥ III grade). CONCLUSION: Metastasectomy in patients with metastatic non-ccRCC may provide clinical benefits in terms of improved PFS and OS, especially in patients without liver metastasis and those with metachronous metastasis.

ABSTRACT

Since 2000, China has faced severe air pollution challenges,prompting the initiation of comprehensive emission control measures post-2013. The subsequent implementation of these measures has led to remarkable enhancements in air quality. This study aims to enhance our understanding of the long-term trends in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and gaseous pollutants of ozone (O3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) across China from 2000 to 2020. Utilizing the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model, we conducted a nationwide analysis of air quality, systematically quantifying model predictions against observations for pollutants. The CMAQ model effectively captured the trends of air pollutants, meeting recommended performance benchmarks. The findings reveal variations in pollutant concentrations, with initial increases in PM2.5 followed by a decline after 2013. The proportion of the population living in high PM2.5 concentrations (>75 µg/m3) decreased to <5 % after 2015. However, during the period from 2017 to 2020, around 40 % of the population continued to live in regions that did not meet the criteria for Chinese air quality standards (35 µg/m3). From 2000 to 2019, fewer than 20 % of the population met the WHO standard (100 µg/m3) for MDA8 O3. In 2000, 77 % of the population met the NO2 standard (<20 µg/m3), a figure that declined to 60 % between 2005 and 2014, nearly reaching 70 % in 2020. This study offers a comprehensive analysis of the changes in pollutants and public exposure in 2000-2020. It serves as a foundational resource for future efforts in air pollution control and health research.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The effective segmentation of esophageal squamous carcinoma lesions in CT scans is significant for auxiliary diagnosis and treatment. However, accurate lesion segmentation is still a challenging task due to the irregular form of the esophagus and small size, the inconsistency of spatio-temporal structure, and low contrast of esophagus and its peripheral tissues in medical images. The objective of this study is to improve the segmentation effect of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma lesions. METHODS: It is critical for a segmentation network to effectively extract 3D discriminative features to distinguish esophageal cancers from some visually closed adjacent esophageal tissues and organs. In this work, an efficient HRU-Net architecture (High-Resolution U-Net) was exploited for esophageal cancer and esophageal carcinoma segmentation in CT slices. Based on the idea of localization first and segmentation later, the HRU-Net locates the esophageal region before segmentation. In addition, an Resolution Fusion Module (RFM) was designed to integrate the information of adjacent resolution feature maps to obtain strong semantic information, as well as preserve the high-resolution features. RESULTS: Compared with the other five typical methods, the devised HRU-Net is capable of generating superior segmentation results. CONCLUSIONS: Our proposed HRU-NET improves the accuracy of segmentation for squamous esophageal cancer. Compared to other models, our model performs the best. The designed method may improve the efficiency of clinical diagnosis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma lesions.

The performance of single-atom catalysts is greatly influenced by the chemical environment surrounding the central atom. Here, a salt-assisted method is employed to transform the tetrahedral coordination structure of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks - 8 (ZIF-8) into a planar square coordination structure without altering the ligands. During the subsequent carbonization process, concurrent with the evaporation of zinc atoms, the structure of the nitrogen and carbon carriers (NC carriers) undergoes a transition from five-membered rings to six-membered rings to preserve the 2D structure. This transition results in the generation of additional defect sites on the 2D-NC substrates. Hence, the Pt single-atom catalysts with planar square coordination symmetries can be precisely prepared via electrodeposition (denoted as 2D-Pt SAC). The Pt loading of 2D-Pt SAC is 0.49 ± 0.03 µg cm-2, higher than that of 3D-Pt SAC (0.37 ± 0.04 µg cm-2). In the context of the hydrogen oxidation reaction electrocatalysis, under an overpotential of 50 mV, these single-atom catalysts with 2D coordination exhibit mass activities of 2396 A gPt -1 (32 times higher than commercial Pt/C catalyst, 2 times higher than 3D-PtNC).

ABSTRACT

Excessive blood loss and infections are the prominent risks accounting for mortality and disability associated with acute wounds. Consequently, wound dressings should encompass adequate adhesive, hemostatic, and bactericidal attributes, yet their development remains challenging. This investigation presented the benefits of incorporating a perfluorocarbon nanoemulsion (PPP NE) into a silk-fibroin (SF)-based hydrogel. By stimulating the ß-sheet conformation of the SF chains, PPP NEs drastically shortened the gelation time while augmenting the elasticity, mechanical stability, and viscosity of the hydrogel. Furthermore, the integration of PPP NEs improved hemostatic competence by boosting the affinity between cells and biomacromolecules. It also endowed the hydrogel with ultrasound-controlled bactericidal ability through the inducement of inner cavitation by perfluorocarbon and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by the sonosensitizer protoporphyrin. Ultimately, we employed a laparotomy bleeding model and a Staphylococcus aureus-infected trauma wound to demonstrate the first-aid efficacy. Thus, our research suggested an emulsion-incorporating strategy for managing emergency wounds.

ABSTRACT

Recent evidence suggests that histone deacetylases (HDACs) are important regulators of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). In the present study, a series of benzothiazole-bearing compounds were designed and synthesized as potential HDAC inhibitors. Given the multiple participation of HDACs in ADPKD cyst progression, we embarked on a targeted screen using HeLa nuclear extracts to identify potent pan-HDAC inhibitors. Compound 26 emerged as the most efficacious candidate. Subsequent pharmacological characterization showed that compound 26 effectively inhibits several HDACs, notably HDAC1, HDAC2, and HDAC6 (IC50 < 150 nM), displaying a particularly high sensitivity towards HDAC6 (IC50 = 11 nM). The selected compound significantly prevented cyst formation and expansion in an in vitro cyst model and was efficacious in reducing cyst growth in both an embryonic kidney cyst model and an in vivo ADPKD mouse model. Our results provided compelling evidence that compound 26 represents a new HDAC inhibitor for the treatment of ADPKD.

ABSTRACT

Large language models have found utility in the domain of robot task planning and task decomposition. Nevertheless, the direct application of these models for instructing robots in task execution is not without its challenges. Limitations arise in handling more intricate tasks, encountering difficulties in effective interaction with the environment, and facing constraints in the practical executability of machine control instructions directly generated by such models. In response to these challenges, this research advocates for the implementation of a multi-layer large language model to augment a robot's proficiency in handling complex tasks. The proposed model facilitates a meticulous layer-by-layer decomposition of tasks through the integration of multiple large language models, with the overarching goal of enhancing the accuracy of task planning. Within the task decomposition process, a visual language model is introduced as a sensor for environment perception. The outcomes of this perception process are subsequently assimilated into the large language model, thereby amalgamating the task objectives with environmental information. This integration, in turn, results in the generation of robot motion planning tailored to the specific characteristics of the current environment. Furthermore, to enhance the executability of task planning outputs from the large language model, a semantic alignment method is introduced. This method aligns task planning descriptions with the functional requirements of robot motion, thereby refining the overall compatibility and coherence of the generated instructions. To validate the efficacy of the proposed approach, an experimental platform is established utilizing an intelligent unmanned vehicle. This platform serves as a means to empirically verify the proficiency of the multi-layer large language model in addressing the intricate challenges associated with both robot task planning and execution.

BACKGROUND: Patients with coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) are characterized by hyperinflammation. Calprotectin (S100A8/S100A9) is a calcium- and zinc-binding protein mainly secreted by neutrophilic granulocytes or macrophages and has been suggested to be correlated with the severity and prognosis of COVID-19. AIM: To thoroughly evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic utility of calprotectin in patients with COVID-19 by analyzing relevant studies. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were comprehensively searched from inception to August 1, 2023 to retrieve studies about the application of calprotectin in COVID-19. Useful data such as the level of calprotectin in different groups and the diagnostic efficacy of this biomarker for severe COVID-19 were extracted and aggregated by using Stata 16.0 software. RESULTS: Fifteen studies were brought into this meta-analysis. First, the pooled standardized mean differences (SMDs) were used to estimate the differences in the levels of circulating calprotectin between patients with severe and non-severe COVID-19. The results showed an overall estimate of 1.84 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.09-2.60). Diagnostic information was extracted from 11 studies, and the pooled sensitivity and specificity of calprotectin for diagnosing severe COVID-19 were 0.75 (95% CI: 0.64-0.84) and 0.88 (95% CI: 0.79-0.94), respectively. The AUC was 0.89 and the pooled DOR was 18.44 (95% CI: 9.07-37.51). Furthermore, there was a strong correlation between elevated levels of circulating calprotectin and a higher risk of mortality outcomes in COVID-19 patients (odds ratio: 8.60, 95% CI: 2.17-34.12; p < 0.1). CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis showed that calprotectin was elevated in patients with severe COVID-19, and this atypical inflammatory cytokine might serve as a useful biomarker to distinguish the severity of COVID-19 and predict the prognosis.

ABSTRACT

High-resolution integration of large-scale and long-term anthropogenic nutrient discharge data is crucial for understanding the spatiotemporal evolution of pollution and identifying intervention points for pollution mitigation. Here, we establish the MEANS-ST1.0 dataset, which has a high spatiotemporal resolution and encompasses anthropogenic nutrient discharge data collected in China from 1980 to 2020. The dataset includes five components, namely, urban residential, rural residential, industrial, crop farming, and livestock farming, with a spatial resolution of 1 km and a temporal resolution of monthly. The data are available in three formats, namely, GeoTIFF, NetCDF and Excel, catering to GIS users, researchers and policymakers in various application scenarios, such as visualization and modelling. Additionally, rigorous quality control was performed on the dataset, and its reliability was confirmed through cross-scale validation and literature comparisons at the national and regional levels. These data offer valuable insights for further modelling the interactions between humans and the environment and the construction of a digital Earth.

ABSTRACT

To gain a more meaningful understanding of bone regeneration, it is essential to select an appropriate assessment method. Micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) is widely used for bone regeneration because it provides a substantially higher spatial resolution. Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) ensure shorter scan time and lower radiation doses during quantitative evaluation. Therefore, in this study, DECT and Micro-CT were used to evaluate bone regeneration. We created 18 defects in the tibial plateau of the rabbits and filled them with porous polyetheretherketone implants to promote bone regeneration. At 4, 8, and 12 weeks, Micro-CT and DECT were used to assess the bone repair in the defect region. In comparison to Micro-CT (152 ± 54 mg/cm3), the calcium density values and hydroxyapatite density values obtained by DECT [DECT(Ca) and DECT(HAP)] consistently achieved lower values (59 ± 25 mg/cm3, 126 ± 53 mg/cm3). In addition, there was a good association between DECT and Micro-CT (R = 0.98; R2 = 0.96; DECT(Ca): y = 0.45x-8.31; DECT(HAP): y = 0.95x-17.60). This study highlights the need to use two different imaging methods, each with its advantages and disadvantages, to better understand the bone regeneration process.
