ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to provide a 24-month follow-up on the surgical success and safety of gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy (GATT) combined with phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in the treatment of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) combined cataract. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We included 124 consecutive cases of POAG with microcatheter-assisted GATT or GATT combined with phacoemulsification and IOL implantation at Beijing Tongren Eye Centre between October 2019 and November 2020. Main outcome measures included surgical success rate, changes in IOP, number of antiglaucoma medications, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), postoperative complications at baseline, and follow-up period of up to 24 months. RESULTS: In total, 58 eyes received GATT combined with phacoemulsification surgery and 66 eyes received GATT alone. The overall qualified success rate was 86.21% for eyes with GATT combined with phacoemulsification surgery, and 83.48% for eyes with GATT only at 24 months. IOP was reduced from 26.40 ± 6.37 mmHg on 3.12 ± 0.80 medications preoperatively to 14.61 ± 2.28 mmHg on 0.27 ± 0.71 medications at 12 months and 16.08 ± 2.38 mmHg on 0.45 ± 0.96 medications at 24 months after combined surgery. Additionally, mean BCVA improved from 0.75 ± 0.43 logMAR units preoperatively to 0.22 ± 0.18 logMAR units 24 months after combined surgery. No vision-threatening complications occurred during the 24-month follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: The 24-month follow-up results of our study suggest that GATT combined with cataract surgery is a safe and effective treatment for decreasing IOP and number of medications in patients with POAG combined cataract.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the characteristics and progress of the visual acuity and refractive state of schoolchildren in Huangzhong District, Xining City, Qinghai Province in China. Methods: Cohort study. Department of Ophthalmology, Beijing Children's Hospital carried out a cohort study by collecting the visual acuity and refractive state of Grade 1-5 schoolchildren among 16 primary schools in Huangzhong District, Xining City, Qinghai Province in September 2020 and July 2021. Cycloplegic retinoscopy with eye drop which contained tropicamide (0.5%) and phenylephrine hydrochloride (0.5%) was performed in children with low vision(<1.0). Myopia was defined as the spherical equivalent (SE) ≤-0.5 D after cycloplegic retinoscopy. Measurement data was analyzed by t-test and enumeration data was analyzed by χ2 test. Multiple linear regression was used to analyze the influencing factors. Results: The 2 489 individuals with repeated tests in two years were included in the follow-up study, among whom the prevalence of myopia was 26.24%(653/2 489) in 2020, while 32.94% (820/2 489)respectively in 2021. The incidence of myopia in one school year from grades 1 to 5 was 11.19%(47/420), 5.44%(21/386), 6.39%(25/391), 11.52%(44/382) and 11.67%(30/257). The average SE of children in all grades in 2021 increased negatively from the previous year (Grade 1 to Grade 5 increased respectively: 0.40 D, 0.69 D, 0.62 D, 0.52 D and 0.37 D). Conclusions: The prevalence of myopia among schoolchildren in Huangzhong District, Xining City, Qinghai Province was relatively high. There were two peaks of myopia incidence in the first, fourth and fifth grades. Female, age, and the baseline of SE were the related influencing factors for myopia progression.

ABSTRACT

When utilized in energy devices, the restacking tendency of MXene Ti3C2T x inhibits its electrochemical performance. Using aerosol jet printing (AJP) technology, hybrid Ti3C2T x /C nanospheres are synthesized with C nanoparticle-bonded MXene nanosheets, and the restacking of MXene nanosheets is blocked efficiently. The formation mechanism for hybrid Ti3C2T x /C nanospheres has been hypothesized, and the Ti3C2T x /C is anticipated to assemble and shape along the droplet surface in tandem with the Marangoni flow within the droplet. The planar microsupercapacitor devices generated from these hybrid spherical nanostructures with increased interlayer spacing exhibit exceptional areal capacitance performance. This concept offers a straightforward and effective method for constructing 3D-structured MXene with suppressed self-stacking for diverse high-performance micro energy storage devices.

ABSTRACT

Additive manufacturing techniques have revolutionized the field of fabricating micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) with a high degree of pattern and geometry flexibility. However, traditional additive manufacturing processes are based on the functionality of microstructural modulation, which is essential for device performance. Herein, Ti3C2T x MXene was chosen to report a convenient aerosol jet printing (AJP) process for the in situ curling and alignment of MXene nanosheets. The aerosol droplet provides a microscale regime for curling MXene monolayers while their alignment is performed by the as-generated directional stress derived from the quasi-conical fiber array (CFA)-guided parallel droplet flow. Interdigital microelectrodes were further developed with the curled MXene and a satisfying areal capacitance performance has been demonstrated. Importantly, the AJP technique holds promise for revolutionizing additive manufacturing techniques for fabricating future smart microelectronics and devices not only in the microscale but also in the nanoscale.

ABSTRACT

A combinatory approach using biomaterials together with cells may improve the efficacy of cell therapy for treatment of various diseases/indications. In the current study, we cultured pyramidal neural precursors (PNPs), neural stem cells (NSCs), and fibroblasts on different materials that included fibrin, collagen, hyaluronic acid (HA), sciatic nerves, and matrigel, to search for the most suitable biomaterial for culture of each cell type. Collagen was fabricated in both an aligned collagen-poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) composite and an alveolate form; fibrin and hyaluronic acid were made in an aligned form only. Pyramidal neurons have strong projection ability and have potentials in neural circuit reconstruction. However, PNPs showed difficulty in attaching to and growing neurites on most of the materials tested, except for matrigel, in which neurite growth was observed in a three dimentional culture. NSCs and derivatives hold promise in treating neurological diseases. On aligned fibrin, NSCs could differentiate and grow neurites in a directional manner before fibrin was degraded in 2 days. On aligned collagen-PLGA, induced neural stem cells (iNSCs) could survive and differentiate for at least 2 weeks, but the neurites failed to extend in an aligned way. Fibroblast graft are useful in many indications, such as in skin burns. Fibroblasts generally grew better on the tested materials than did the neural cells, and fibroblasts could grow directionally on the aligned fibrin and scattered around on the alveolate collagen. The study provided information which may be used to further optimize the materials to support culture of each type of cells.
