ABSTRACT

Several observational studies have found that exposure to sunlight reduces the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, sun exposure remains ambiguous in its relationship to CRC. We carried out a Mendelian randomization (MR) study to explore the potential associations between them. We examined the exposure to sunlight summary statistics of the UK Biobank Consortium using a 2-sample MR analysis. Using data from the FinnGen consortium, we derived summary statistics for CRC. We conducted our analysis with various methods, incorporating inverse variance weighted (IVW) along with 4 other approaches. A Cochran Q statistic was used to measure the heterogeneity of instrumental variables (IVs). We screened 133 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (time spent outdoors in summer), 41 SNPs (time spent outdoors in winter), and 35 SNPs (frequency of solarium/sunlamp use) representing sunlight exposure for MR analysis. All selected SNPs had an F-statistic >20, indicating that IVs did not weakly bias the results. The summer outdoor activity trait exhibited significant heterogeneity (Cochran Q statistic = 183.795, P = .002 < 0.05), but we found no horizontal polymorphisms or significant heterogeneity for the other exposure traits. According to IVW estimates, no causal association exists between time spent outdoors in summer and CRC (Odds Ratio, OR = 0.735, 95% confidence interval, CI = 0.494-1.017, P = .128 > 0.017). No causal relationship existed between time spent outdoors in winter and CRC, as indicated by Bonferroni-corrected adjusted p-values. The OR was 0.877 with a 95% CI of 0.334-2.299, and the P value was .789, more significant than the significance threshold of 0.017. The solarium/sunlamp use frequency was not associated with CRC (OR = 1.567, 95%CI = 0.243-10.119, P = .637 > .017). Also, an IVW with random effects was applied to determine the causal relationship between summer outdoor time and CRC. No causal association between summer outdoor time and CRC was found (OR = 0.735, 95% CI = 0.494-1.017, P = .128 > .017). Additionally, 4 additional analyses yielded similar results. The findings of our study suggest that exposure to sunlight may reduce CRC risk, but the causal relationship remains unsolved. There is no evidence to suggest that exposure to sunlight prevents CRC. Randomized, controlled trials are needed to determine whether sunlight exposure protects against CRC.

ABSTRACT

In this study, 127 light-duty gasoline cars and 10 light-duty gasoline trucks with different emission standards were selected to explore the influences of different conditions and vehicle parameters on the emission characteristics of carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC), and methane (CH4) using a portable emission measurement system based on a chassis dynamometer under acceleration simulation mode. The results showed that the gaseous pollutants of light-duty gasoline vehicles displayed a relatively lower emission rate under the idle condition, which accounted for only 22.9% and 25.8% of the emission rate at the accelerated condition and constant speed condition, respectively. The pollutant emission characteristics were closely related to the working conditions. The emission rates of CO2 and NOx in the accelerated condition were less than those at the constant speed condition, while the emission rates of CO, HC, and CH4 in the accelerated condition were higher than those at the constant speed condition. In the constant low-speed condition, the emission factors of CO2, CO, NOx, HC, and CH4 were 383.20, 2.98, 1.60, 0.14, and 0.03 g·km-1 for light-duty gasoline cars, respectively, and 360.66, 2.64, 1.61, 0.0055, and 0.0027 g·km-1 for light-duty gasoline trucks, respectively. Tighter emission standards have caused significant reductions in emissions. The emission factors of CO, NOx, HC, and CH4 could be decreased by 87.5%, 97.3%, 97.9%, and 86.4%, respectively, from China Ⅰ to China Ⅴ. A non-linear relationship was found between the age, odometer, vehicle weight, and vehicular emissions. In addition, the engine displacement was positively correlated with vehicular emissions.

ABSTRACT

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Gentiana delavayi Franch. (Gentianaceae) as an ethnomedicinal plant contains a variety of effective active ingredients and exhibits diverse pharmacological actions, such as hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory and central nervous system effects. In this study we investigated the influence of G. delavayi flower extract on amyloid precursor protein (APP) processing at molecular and cellular levels. APP/PS1 Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells were treated with chloroform extract of G. delavayi flower in different concentrations for 24 h. Concentrations of amyloid ß (Aß) 40 and Aß42 in the cell supernatant and activity of ß-site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1), BACE2, and cathepsin D were determined. The expression of APP and neprilysin (NEP) within the cell were further determined. Compared with the control group, the levels of Aß40 and Aß42 declined notably and the activity of BACE1 was inhibited significantly in the APP/PS1 CHO cells after treatment with the chloroform extract of G. delavayi flower. Although the activities of BACE2 and cathepsin D were not changed, the expression of Aß degrading enzyme NEP increased remarkably. Our experiments have clearly showed that the chloroform extract of G. delavayi flower inhibits the generation of ß-amyloid by specifically inhibiting ß-secretase and increases the expression of NEP which fastens the degradation of Aß, exhibiting the effect of decreasing Aß accumulation in APP/PS1 CHO cells. These results suggest that the active components from the chloroform extract of G. delavayi flower have a further prospect to be developed as potential anti-Aß drug.

ABSTRACT

A continuous flow reactor (TCFR) with 10 compartments was used to treat domestic sewage. The anaerobic compartments of TCFR were kept at 3. The anoxic compartments of TCFR were reduced from 2 to 0. Therefore, the aerobic compartments of TCFR were increased gradually from 5 to 7. The aerobic compartments were set to continual aeration in Run1 and intermittent aeration from Run2 to Run4. The aeration/non-aeration ratios were 40 min/20 min,40 min/30 min, and 40 min/40 min, respectively. The nitrification liquid reflux ratios were reduced gradually from 150% to 0%. When the average influent concentrations of COD, NH4+-N, TN, and PO43--P were 259.34, 60.26, 64.42, and 6.10 mg·L-1, respectively, the corresponding effluent concentrations were 26.40, 1.03, 5.84, and 0.3 mg·L-1, respectively in Run4. The nitrogen removal amounts increased gradually from 192.30 mg·h-1 in Run1 to 244.00 mg·h-1 in Run4, and the corresponding removal rates increased from 65.40% to 95.30%. The activity of denitrifying phosphorus accumulating organisms (DPAOs) and phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs) increased from 36.05% and 38.20% in Run1 to 140.50% and 133.40% in Run4, respectively. Simultaneous nitrification and denitrifying phosphorus removal was achieved in TCFR by adopting intermittent aeration, which provided a reference for the reformation of sewage treatment plants.

ABSTRACT

To improve the preservation period without cold-chain of the live attenuated vaccine of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), a set of thermostable formulations composed of trehalose, tryptone and other protectants were dried by vacuum foam drying (VFD) along with PRRSV solutions. In the 37°C and 45°C resistance ageing test, the dried foam vaccine showed significant thermostability, and the virus titer lost 0.8 Log10 at 37°C for 4months, 1.0 Log10 at 45°C for 25days. Furthermore, the foam vaccine could be stored at 25°C for at least one year. Besides, the vaccine preserved in 37°C, 25°C and 4°C for 3months were inoculated on 20-days old piglet, and the serum titer was monitoring by ELISA kit. Inoculated two weeks later, the ELISA titer were all qualified and had the similar level compared to the commercial vaccines of the lyophilization dosage.
