ABSTRACT

There are important ways to solve the ecological risk problems of regional water resources and soil resources, and to promote the benign development of soil and water resources, involving scientific evaluation of the ecological risk of soil and water resources in Hefei metropolitan area, clarifying the intrinsic evolution law of ecological risk and identifying the characteristics of spatial and temporal variations. Based on the conceptual model of "ST-QS-RR", the evaluation indicator system is constructed, the CRITIC method is used to assign weights, and the TOPSIS method, kernel density method, markov chain and resistance model are used to measure and analyse the spatial and temporal characteristics of ecological risk of soil and water resources, and to explore the main factors that cause ecological risk of soil and water resources. The results of the study show that: (1) Hefei metropolitan area and its cities show a steady decline and the characteristics of "high in the north and low in the south, high in the west and low in the east". (2) Most of the subsystems in the Hefei metropolitan area and the cities show a decreasing trend, with its resistance factors mainly concentrated in the QS system. (3) There is club convergence in Hefei metropolitan area. When the type of adjacent domain is higher, the change of risk type is more sensitive.

ABSTRACT

Parasitism is known to affect the behavior of host species to enhance parasite dispersal and transmission. However, host behavioral responses to parasitism unrelated to parasite dispersal and transmission have been much less studied. The objective of this study was to determine whether grasshopper hosts infected and uninfected with a parasitic fly (Blaesoxipha sp.) differ in terms of the nutrient content of the diet they consume. We investigated the dietary preferences of two grasshopper species (i.e. Asulconotus chinghaiensis and Chorthippus fallax) in terms of the C/N composition of plant species consumed, and determined whether this affected the egg production of unparasitized and parasitized grasshoppers by flies in a Tibetan alpine meadow. The composition of plants consumed differed significantly between the unparasitized and parasitized grasshoppers. Specifically, the abundance of N-rich legumes was lower and that of high C/N grasses was higher in the diet of the parasitized compared to the unparasitized grasshoppers. Diet N content was higher and C/N was lower in the diet of unparasitized grasshoppers, and parasitized females produced fewer eggs than their unparasitized conspecifics. Future enquiries are needed to understand the specific mechanisms underlying these dietary differences. The effects of parasites on the fitness-associated behavior of hosts should be studied more broadly to better understand parasite evolution and adaptation.

ABSTRACT

Livestock grazing is an important tool used in grassland land management practices. Studies have substantially addressed the effect of grazing on plant species diversity, revealing that moderate grazing increases plant species diversity. However, few studies have dealt with the relationship between grazing and arthropod species diversity, which remains unclear. Here, we hypothesize that moderate grazing promotes arthropod species diversity because arthropods are directly or indirectly dependent on plant diversity. In this study, we conducted a two-year plant and arthropod survey from 2020 to 2021 at four levels of grazing intensity, i.e., nongrazing (as a control), light grazing, moderate grazing, and heavy grazing, of the long-term grazing experiment starting in 2016. The data show that plant species diversity peaked in the moderate grazing treatment, and herbivore species diversity was positively correlated with plant species diversity (and hence peaked in the moderate grazing treatment). Moderate grazing promoted parasitoid species diversity, which was positively correlated with herbivore species diversity. However, predator species diversity did not significantly differ among the four treatments. In addition, saprophage species diversity decreased, whereas coprophages increased with increasing grazing levels, such that species richness (but not species diversity of detritivores statistically) was highest in the moderate grazing treatment. Consequently, the species diversity of arthropods as a whole peaked at the moderate grazing level, a phenomenology that is consistent with the intermediate disturbance hypothesis. Considering that moderate grazing has been found to increase plant species diversity, facilitate soil carbon accumulation, and prevent soil erosion, we suggest that moderate grazing would maximize multi-functional ecosystem services.

ABSTRACT

Background and Objectives: The physiological phenomenon peculiar to women, namely menopause, makes the occurrence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in postmenopausal hypertensive women more characteristic. Less is known about the risk of developing LVH in Chinese postmenopausal hypertensive women. Thus, the present study was intended to design a nomogram for predicting the risk of developing LVH in Chinese postmenopausal hypertensive women. Materials and Methods: Postmenopausal hypertensive women aged between 49 and 68 years were divided into either the training set (n = 550) or the validation set (n = 284) in a 2:1 ratio. Patients in the validation set were followed up for one year. A stepwise multivariable logistic regression model was used to assess the predictors of LVH in postmenopausal women with hypertension. The best-fit nomogram was executed using R software. The calibration and decision curve were employed to verify the predictive accuracy of the nomogram. The results were evaluated in the validation set. Results: Menopause age (OR = 0.929, 95% CI 0.866-0.998, p = 0.044), BMI (OR = 1.067, 95% CI 1.019-1.116, p = 0.005), morning systolic blood pressure (SBP: OR = 1.050, 95% CI 1.032-1.069, p = 0.000), morning diastolic BP (DBP OR = 1.055, 95% CI 1.028-1.083, p = 0.003), angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) utilization rate (OR = 0.219, 95% CI 0.131-0.365, p = 0.000), LDL-C (OR = 1.460, 95% CI 1.090-1.954, p = 0.011) and cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) (OR = 1.415, 95% CI 1.139-1.757, p = 0.028) were associated with LVH in postmenopausal hypertension patients. The nomogram model was then developed using these variables. The internal validation trial showed that the nomogram model described herein had good performance in discriminating a C-index of 0.881 (95% CI: 0.837-0.924) and high quality of calibration plots. External validation of LVH-predictive nomogram results showed that the area under the ROC curve was 0.903 (95%CI 0.900-0.907). Conclusions: Our results indicate that the risk prediction nomogram model based on menopausal age, BMI, morning SBP, morning DBP, ARB utilization rate, LDL-C and CAVI has good accuracy and may provide useful references for the medical staff in the intuitive and individualized risk assessment in clinical practice.
