ABSTRACT

Estimating the direction of arrival (DOA) of spatially spread sources is a significant challenge in array signal processing. This work introduces an effective method within the sparse Bayesian framework to tackle this issue. A spatially spread source is modeled using a multi-dimensional Slepian signal subspace that expands the dictionary and results in a block-sparse structured solution. By taking advantage of block-sparse Bayesian learning, parameter estimation becomes feasible. A complex Gaussian posterior is derived under a multi-snapshot block-sparse framework with a complex Gaussian prior and varying noise conditions. The hyperparameters are estimated using the expectation-maximization algorithm. Through numerical tests and sea test data evaluations, the proposed method shows superior energy focusing for spatially spread signals. Under limited snapshots and challenging signal-to-noise ratios, the current method can still offer precise DOA determination for spatially spread sources.

ABSTRACT

Obese people with acute pancreatitis (AP) have an increased risk of developing severe acute pancreatitis (SAP), which prolongs the length of hospital stay and increases mortality. Thus, elucidation of the mechanisms through which SAP occurs in obese individuals will provide clues for possible treatment targets. Differences in early events in obese or lean patients with AP have not been conclusively reported. We selected C57BL/6 mice as lean mice models, ob/ob mice or diet induced obese (DIO) mice as obese mice models and then induced experimental AP in mice via injections of caerulein. There were suppressed p-AMPK expressions in the pancreas of obese mice, compared with same-age lean C57BL/6 mice, which were further reduced in AP mice models. Obese AP mice were treated using AICAR, a direct AMPK agonist, which prevented pancreatic damage and cell death, suppressed pancreatic enzyme levels in serum, reduced the areas of fat saponification in the peritoneal cavity, prevented injury in other organs and decreased mice mortality rate. Further assays showed that AICAR activates p-AMPK to stabilize pro-caspase-8. Pro-caspase-8 enhances RIPK3 degradation, inhibits pancreatic acinar cell necroptosis, and downregulates the release of pancreatic enzymes. Thus, activation of AMPK by AICAR alleviates pancreatic acinar cell necroptosis and converts SAP to mild acute pancreatitis in obese mice.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) is often associated with significant morbidity and mortality after the Whipple operation. Patient-related factors associated with POPF include soft pancreatic texture and a small main pancreatic duct (MPD). The traditional duct-to-mucosa anastomosis was modified to be easily performed. The aim of the study was to evaluate the simplified pancreaticojejunostomy (PJ) method in the prevention of POPF after minimally invasive pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). METHODS: Ninety-eight patients who underwent laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) and robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy (RPD) with a simplified PJ procedure containing only two duct-to-mucosa sutures and four penetrating-sutures to anastomose the pancreatic parenchyma and jejunal seromuscular layer in our center were retrospectively studied. Demographics and clinical short-term safety were assessed. RESULTS: All LPD and RPD procedures were successfully performed. The median time of PJ was 17 min, and the median blood loss was 60 mL, with only one patient requiring transfusion. Four patients (4.1%) suffered from clinically relevant POPF (CR-POPF), including four grade B cases and no grade C cases. For patients with an MPD diameter of 3 mm or less, POPF was noted in two (4%) of the fifty patients, with all cases being grade B. Of the patients with a soft pancreas, only two (4.5%) patients suffered from grade B POPF. One patient (1.0%) experienced a 90-day mortality. Neither the main pancreatic diameter nor pancreatic texture had an impact on postoperative outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Our technique is a simple, safe and efficient alternative to prevent POPF after LPD and RPD. This method is suitable for almost all pancreatic conditions, including cases with a small main pancreatic duct and soft pancreas, and has the potential to become the preferred procedure in low-volume pancreatic surgery centers. Our modified duct-to-mucosa PJ, which contains only two duct-to-mucosa sutures and four penetrating-sutures to anastomose the pancreatic parenchyma and jejunal seromuscular layer, is ideal for small MPD and soft pancreas when performing minimally invasive PD and has a low rate of POPF. ABSTRACT

RATIONALE: Anterior mediastinal signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) is a rare tumor that has only been reported in two cases of thymic cancer. Positive immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining for caudal-type homeobox (CDX) 2, cytokeratin (CK) 20 and special AT-rich binding protein (SATB) 2 usually indicate gastrointestinal tumors but begin to appear in thymic cancers with enteric differentiation. Here, we describe a case of the anterior mediastinal SRCC with enteric differentiation who was correctly treated with surgery and chemo-radiation and was alive after four months. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 48-year-old female presented without chest and lung symptoms had an anterior mediastinal mass during a routine physical examination. Laboratory examinations showed an elevated level of serum carbohydrate antigen (CA)-125 at 73.63 U/mL. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed an irregular soft tissue density shadow with heterogeneous enhancement in the anterior mediastinum. The tumor had invaded the pericardium, the left septal nerve and the innominate and was completely removed after anterior mediastinal surgery. Postoperative pathological examinations revealed signet ring cell features and positive staining for CDX2, CK20, SATB2 and Ki-67 (Li: 70%). The samples were negative for cluster of differentiation (CD)-5, CK7, thyroid transcription factor (TTF) 1, NapsinA, CerbB-2, P53 and PD-L1 by IHC examinations. The suspected diagnosis was an anterior mediastinal SRCC that had originated in the digestive system. DIAGNOSIS: The patient was diagnosed with anterior mediastinal SRCC. INTERVENTIONS: The patient was treated with surgery and combined chemo-radiotherapy. OUTCOMES: The patient had no recurrence or metastasis after five months. LESSONS: We describe a rare case of the anterior mediastinal SRCC of unknown origin. Our case, for the first time shows that surgery combined with chemo-radiotherapy is an effective treatment regimen for anterior mediastinal SRCC.

ABSTRACT

Hepatocellular carcinoma is the cancer with the highest incidence among liver cancers and how to treat this cancer effectively is still a difficult problem we must face. We selected meiotic nuclear divisions 1 (MND1) as the study object by combining data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database with prognostic survival analysis. We validated the value of MND1 in evaluating the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma through a diagnostic and prognostic model. At the same time, cellular experiments were used to demonstrate the effect of MND1 on hepatocellular carcinoma proliferation and migration. We used short hairpin RNA (shRNA) to knock down MND1 in Hun7 and HCCLM3 cell lines. Through 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and colony formation assays, we found that knocking down MND1 reduced the proliferation of cells. Through wound healing and Transwell assays, we found that knocking down MND1 reduced cell migration and invasion. Moreover, we found that MND1 can promote the proliferation, migration, and invasion of Hep3B cells by overexpressing MND1. Therefore, in general, MND1 is expected to be a gene that can effectively diagnose and treat hepatocellular carcinoma.

ABSTRACT

In underwater acoustic target parameter estimation, the cross-spectrum method estimates the velocity of the target by the interference structure of the cross-correlated fields in two ranges. However, with the increase in interference in the marine environment, the performance of conventional cross-spectrum target velocity estimation methods gradually declines or even fails. To solve this problem, a cross-spectrum histogram method that combines the multi-line spectrum characteristics of the target is proposed in this paper. First, each frequency point of all line spectra is compensated by the cross-spectrum compensation method. Then the target velocity estimation value is obtained by performing probability distribution statistics on the velocity estimation results for all frequency points. Under different signal-to-noise ratios, simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method is still effective in estimating the target velocity when the conventional method fails.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has high mortality and poor prognosis. Pyroptosis can influence the prognosis of patients by regulating the proliferation, invasion, and metastasis of cancer cells. However, the role of pyroptosis-related genes (PRGs) in PDAC remains unclear. METHODS: In this study, based on the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) cohort of PDAC samples, univariate Cox analysis and LASSO regression analysis were used to screen the prognostic PRGs and establish the gene signature. To further evaluate the functional significance of CASP4 and NLRP1 in PDAC, we also conducted an in vitro study to explore the mechanism of CASP4 and NLRP1 regulating the occurrence and development of PDAC. Finally, we investigated the relationship between CASP4 and NLRP1 expression levels and drug sensitivity in pancreatic cancer cells. RESULTS: A risk prediction model based on CASP4 and NLRP1 was established, which can distinguish high-risk patients from low-risk patients (P < 0.001). Both internal validation and external GEO data sets validation demonstrate good predictive capability of the model (AUC = 0.732, AUC = 0.802, AUC = 0.632, P < 0.05). In vitro, CCK8 and Transwell assay suggested that CASP4 may accelerate the progression of PDAC by promoting proliferation and migration of pancreatic cancer cells, while NLRP1 has been found to have tumor suppressive effect. It should be noted that knockdown of CASP4 reduced the level of coke death, the expression levels of acetyl-CoA carboxylase, FASN, SREBP-1 and SREBP-2 were decreased, and the number of lipid droplets was also significantly reduced. Moreover, the enrichment of signaling pathways showed that NLRP1 was significantly correlated with MAPK and RAS/ERK signaling pathways, and knocking down NLRP1 could indeed up-regulate p-ERK expression. Finally, high expression of CASP4 and low expression of NLRP1 increased the sensitivity of pancreatic cancer cells to ERK inhibitors. CONCLUSIONS: In especial, CASP4 can promote tumor progression by promoting the synthesis and accumulation of fatty acids, while NLRP1 acts on RAS/ERK signaling pathway. Both of genes play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of PDAC, which may also affect the inhibitors of MAPK/ERK efficiency.

ABSTRACT

This paper discussed the process parameters optimization of partial least-square (PLS) modeling according to quality by design (QbD) concept. D-optimal design and online near-infrared (NIR) sensor were proposed to analysis the Geniposide in Gardenia jasminoides Ellis using above process parameters to achieve robustness PLS model. Four critical model parameters (CMPs) were identified to construct a D-optimal design, which included the selection of sample set, spectra pre-processing, latent variables and variable selection methods. NIR sensor dataset was obtained under a pilot scale system. The D-optimal design optimization strategy resulted in a robust PLS model with the optimal parameters, 1/2 samples for calibration sets through Baseline spectra pre-processing with SiPLS-selecting variables under 8 factors. The critical evaluation attributes (CEAs) of PLS model were recommended as follows: the RMSEC and Rcal2 of the calibration set were 0.005901 and 0.9983. The RMSEP and Rpre2 of the validation set were 0.02002 and 0.9845. The multivariate detection limit (MDL) was 1.143 × 10-3. Therefore, design space of CMPs which affected CEAs of PLS model was established. The result demonstrated that the proposed method was beneficial for the robustness of PLS model, which also showed a significant guideline for the design and development of PLS model.

ABSTRACT

Due to the significant multipath and Doppler effects in the underwater acoustic (UWA) channel, the quality of the received signal is degraded, which seriously affects the performance of UWA communication. The paper proposes a time reversal UWA communication method combined with a symbol-based Doppler compensation (SBDC) technique to solve those problems. A single element time reversal mirror (TRM) is used to realize channel equalization and mitigate the inter-symbol interference (ISI) resulting from multipath propagation. The SBDC technique is subsequently used to compensate Doppler effects in the received signal, thereby reducing the bit error rate (BER) and improving the communication performance. In order to verify the performance of the proposed communication method, some simulations with real sounding channels were performed. Moreover, a field UWA communication experiment was conducted in the Songhua River (Harbin, China). The UWA communication experiment achieves nearly error-free performance with a communication rate of 100 bit/s in the bandwidth of 2 kHz. The results of the experiment demonstrate the feasibility and robustness of the proposed UWA communication method.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, based on the reactive component of the vertical intensity, the method for target depth resolution has been improved. In the previous existing research results, using the reactive component of vertical intensity, the research objects for target depth resolution in shallow water, can only be the targets whose frequencies can only excite the first two normal modes, and the depth of targets whose frequencies excite more than two normal modes cannot be correctly identified. The basic idea of the improved method is to classify targets on the foundation of the lower-mode correlation quantity of the vertical intensity. Based on the improved method, we can realize depth resolution of the targets whose frequency can excite the first three normal modes so as to effectively expand the working band useful for target depth resolution. Finally, we can realize the three-dimensional target depth resolution so as to distinguish the aerial, surface and underwater targets. The feasibility of the algorithm is verified by simulation and experimental data processing.

ABSTRACT

This paper mainly studies and verifies the target number category-resolution method in multi-target cases and the target depth-resolution method of aerial targets. Firstly, target depth resolution is performed by using the sign distribution of the reactive component of the vertical complex acoustic intensity; the target category and the number resolution in multi-target cases is realized with a combination of the bearing-time recording information; and the corresponding simulation verification is carried out. The algorithm proposed in this paper can distinguish between the single-target multi-line spectrum case and the multi-target multi-line spectrum case. This paper presents an improved azimuth-estimation method for multi-target cases, which makes the estimation results more accurate. Using the Monte Carlo simulation, the feasibility of the proposed target number and category-resolution algorithm in multi-target cases is verified. In addition, by studying the field characteristics of the aerial and surface targets, the simulation results verify that there is only amplitude difference between the aerial target field and the surface target field under the same environmental parameters, and an aerial target can be treated as a special case of a surface target; the aerial target category resolution can then be realized based on the sign distribution of the reactive component of the vertical acoustic intensity so as to realize three-dimensional target depth resolution. By processing data from a sea experiment, the feasibility of the proposed aerial target three-dimensional depth-resolution algorithm is verified.

ABSTRACT

This paper focuses on the problems encountered in the actual data processing with the use of the existing aerial target localization methods, analyzes the causes of the problems, and proposes an improved algorithm. Through the processing of the sea experiment data, it is found that the existing algorithms have higher requirements for the accuracy of the angle estimation. The improved algorithm reduces the requirements of the angle estimation accuracy and obtains the robust estimation results. The closest distance matching estimation algorithm and the horizontal distance estimation compensation algorithm are proposed. The smoothing effect of the data after being post-processed by using the forward and backward two-direction double-filtering method has been improved, thus the initial stage data can be filtered, so that the filtering results retain more useful information. In this paper, the aerial target height measurement methods are studied, the estimation results of the aerial target are given, so as to realize the three-dimensional localization of the aerial target and increase the understanding of the underwater platform to the aerial target, so that the underwater platform has better mobility and concealment.

ABSTRACT

Quality evaluation plays a vital role in ensuring safety and effectiveness of Chinese materia medica (CMM). Microscopic and morphological technologies can be used to distinguish CMM's characteristics, such as shape, size, texture, section, and smell, for authenticity and quality control of CMM. The microscopic and morphological applications of novel micro-technology, colorimeter, and texture analyzer for CMM identification are summarized and the future prospect is discussed in this paper. Various styles and complex sources of CMM are systemically reviewed, including cormophyte medicinal materials, fruit and seeds, pollen grain, and spore materials.

ABSTRACT

The most classical detector of active sonar and radar is the matched filter (MF), which is the optimal processor under ideal conditions. Aiming at the problem of active sonar detection, we propose a frequency-domain adaptive matched filter (FDAMF) with the use of a frequency-domain adaptive line enhancer (ALE). The FDAMF is an improved MF. In the simulations in this paper, the signal to noise ratio (SNR) gain of the FDAMF is about 18.6 dB higher than that of the classical MF when the input SNR is -10 dB. In order to improve the performance of the FDAMF with a low input SNR, we propose a pre-processing method, which is called frequency-domain time reversal convolution and interference suppression (TRC-IS). Compared with the classical MF, the FDAMF combined with the TRC-IS method obtains higher SNR gain, a lower detection threshold, and a better receiver operating characteristic (ROC) in the simulations in this paper. The simulation results show that the FDAMF has higher processing gain and better detection performance than the classical MF under ideal conditions. The experimental results indicate that the FDAMF does improve the performance of the MF, and can adapt to actual interference in a way. In addition, the TRC-IS preprocessing method works well in an actual noisy ocean environment.

ABSTRACT

This paper proposes a composite channel virtual time reversal mirror (CCVTRM) for vertical sensor array (VSA) processing and applies it to long-range underwater acoustic (UWA) communication in shallow water. Because of weak signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), it is unable to accurately estimate the channel impulse response of each sensor of the VSA, thus the traditional passive time reversal mirror (PTRM) cannot perform well in long-range UWA communication in shallow water. However, CCVTRM only needs to estimate the composite channel of the VSA to accomplish time reversal mirror (TRM), which can effectively mitigate the inter-symbol interference (ISI) and reduce the bit error rate (BER). In addition, the calculation of CCVTRM is simpler than traditional PTRM. An UWA communication experiment using a VSA of 12 sensors was conducted in the South China Sea. The experiment achieves a very low BER communication at communication rate of 66.7 bit/s over an 80 km range. The results of the sea trial demonstrate that CCVTRM is feasible and can be applied to long-range UWA communication in shallow water.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, an improved azimuth angle estimation method with a single acoustic vector sensor (AVS) is proposed based on matched filtering theory. The proposed method is mainly applied in an active sonar detection system. According to the conventional passive method based on complex acoustic intensity measurement, the mathematical and physical model of this proposed method is described in detail. The computer simulation and lake experiments results indicate that this method can realize the azimuth angle estimation with high precision by using only a single AVS. Compared with the conventional method, the proposed method achieves better estimation performance. Moreover, the proposed method does not require complex operations in frequencydomain and achieves computational complexity reduction.
