ABSTRACT

In the field of industrial semi-hydrogenation of trace alkynes amidst alkene feedstocks, the pivotal challenge lies in circumventing the hydrogenation of alkenes. Herein, we present Zr(OH)4 as an innovative catalyst for the semi-hydrogenation of phenylacetylene, demonstrating remarkable selectivity towards styrene (>96%), while exhibiting inactivity towards free styrene. Notably, Zr(OH)4 achieves a 95% conversion of quasi-industry 1 mol% phenylacetylene within styrene, with a mere 0.44% styrene loss. Experimental and theoretical results confirm both terminal Zr-O-H and bridge Zr-O-H can dissociate H2, while the terminal Zr-O-H plays a crucial role on activating phenylacetylene through the sequential hydrogenation process of C6H5C≡CH→C6H5C=CH2→C6H5CH=CH2. The high rate of phenylacetylene removal is attributed to its strong adsorption capacity, while Zr(OH)4 has a significantly weaker adsorption capacity for styrene.

Following the publication of this paper, it was drawn to the Editor's attention by a concerned reader that the data featured in Figs. 1, 4 and 5 (including western blotting data) were strikingly similar to data that had appeared in a different form in a different article by different authors at different research institutes. Owing to the fact that the contentious data in the above article had already been accepted for publication in another article prior to its submission to Molecular Medicine Reports, the Editor has decided that this paper should be retracted from the Journal. ABSTRACT

We explored the sex difference in lung ischemia-reperfusion injury (LIRI) and the role and mechanism of estrogen (E2) and angiotensin II (Ang II) in LIRI. We established a model of LIRI in mice. E2, Ang II, E2 inhibitor (fulvestrant), and angiotensin II receptor blocker (losartan) were grouped for treatment. The lung wet/dry weight ratio, natural killer (NK) cells (by flow cytometry), neutrophils (by flow cytometry), expression of key proteins (by Western blot, immunohistochemistry, ELISA, and immunofluorescence), and expression of related protein mRNA (by qPCR) were detected. The ultrastructure of the alveolar epithelial cells was observed by transmission electron microscopy. We found that E2 and Ang II played an important role in the progression of LIRI. The two signaling pathways showed obvious antagonism, and E2 regulates LIRI in the different sexes by downregulating Ang II, leading to a better prognosis. E2 and losartan reduced the inflammatory cell infiltration in lung tissue and key inflammatory factors in serum while fulvestrant and Ang II had the opposite effect. The protective effect of E2 was related with AKT, p38, COX2, and HIF-1α.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Epidemiologic studies have examined the association between dietary fatty acids and type 2 diabetes risk in general populations. Evidence regarding their associations with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate prepregnancy fatty acids intake in relation to GDM risk. METHODS: 3,725 pregnant women from the Xi'an Birth Cohort Study who were free of previous GDM or pre-existing chronic diseases were included. Dietary intake of total fat and individual fatty acids (including saturated fatty acids [SFA], monounsaturated fatty acids [MUFA], polyunsaturated fatty acids [PUFA], and trans fatty acids) during the year preceding pregnancy was assessed by a validated food-frequency questionnaire before 16 weeks of gestation. GDM was confirmed based on the 75-g oral glucose tolerance test. Log-binomial or modified Poisson regression models were applied to estimate the relative risks (RRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (95%CIs) of GDM for fatty acids intake. Generalized linear regression was adopted for blood glucose levels with fatty acids intake. RESULTS: 644 (17.3 %) incident GDM cases were confirmed in our study. Participants in the highest intake of total fat substituting for carbohydrates had a 33 % reduced risk of GDM than those in the lowest intake (RR:0.67; 95%CI:0.55,0.81). For individual fatty acids, only PUFA intake was associated with a lower risk of GDM, with RR comparing extreme tertiles of 0.61 (95%CI:0.49,0.76). Each 2 % increase in energy from total fat and PUFA replacing carbohydrates decreased the risk of GDM by 6 % (95%CI:3 %,9 %) and 15 % (95%CI:9 %,21 %), respectively. Similar inverse associations with intake of total fat and PUFA were observed for blood glucose levels. Further analyses of SFA substitution showed that replacement of 2 % energy from SFA with PUFA and MUFA was associated with 26 % (RR:0.74; 95%CI:0.62,0.88) and 30 % (RR:0.70; 95%CI:0.50, 0.98) decreased risk of GDM, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Greater intake of total fat and PUFA before pregnancy was associated with lower risk of GDM when replacing carbohydrates. Substitution SFA with PUFA and MUFA was also inversely associated with GDM risk. These findings support the important role of optimal dietary fatty acids composition in the prevention of GDM.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Abnormal blood potassium levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases and mortality in the general population; however, evidence regarding the association between dyskalemia and mortality among patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains inconclusive. This study aimed to evaluate the association of potassium levels with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among patients with CVD. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases were searched up to August 2023 to identify relevant cohort studies among patients with CVD, such as myocardial infarction, stroke, and heart failure. Abnormal potassium levels were considered as hypokalemia or hyperkalemia. The primary outcomes were all-cause mortality based on follow-up length (including in-hospital, short-term and long-term mortality) and cardiovascular mortality. The methodological quality of included studies was assessed by using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The pooled relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using random-effects models. Restricted cubic splines were applied to explore the dose-response relationship. RESULTS: Thirty-one cohort studies involving 227,645 participants with an average age of 68.3 years were included in the meta-analysis, all of which achieved moderate to high quality. Hyperkalemia was significantly associated with an approximately 3.0-fold increased risk of all-cause in-hospital mortality (RR:2.78,95CI%:1.92,4.03), 1.8-fold of all-cause short-term mortality (RR:1.80, 95CI%:1.44,2.27), 1.3-fold of all-cause long-term mortality (RR:1.33, 95CI%:1.19,1.48) and 1.2-fold of cardiovascular mortality (RR:1.19, 95CI%:1.04,1.36). Similar positive associations were also observed between hypokalemia and risk of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality. The RRs of all-cause in-hospital, short-term, long-term mortality and cardiovascular mortality with hyperkalemia were attenuated to 2.21 (95CI%:1.60,3.06), 1.46(95CI%:1.25,1.71), 1.23 (95CI%:1.09,1.39) and 1.13 (95CI%:1.00,1.27) when treating hypokalemia together with normokalemia as the reference group. A U-shaped association was observed between potassium levels and mortality, with the lowest risk at around 4.2 mmol/L. CONCLUSIONS: Both hypokalemia and hyperkalemia were positively associated with the risk of mortality in patients with CVD. Our results support the importance of potassium homeostasis for improving the CVD management. REGISTRATION: PROSPERO, CRD42022324337.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Excessive generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) following myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) can result in additional death of myocardial cells. The rapid clearance of ROS after reperfusion injury and intervention during subsequent cardiac repair stages are crucial for the ultimate recovery of cardiac function. Methods: Magnesium-doped mesoporous bioactive glasses were prepared and loaded with the antioxidant drug gallic acid into MgNPs by sol-gel method. The antioxidant effects of MgNPs/GA were tested for their pro-angiogenic and anti-inflammatory effects based on the release characteristics of GA and Mg2+ from MgNPs/GA. Later, we confirmed in our in vivo tests through immunofluorescence staining of tissue sections at various time points that MgNPs/GA exhibited initial antioxidant effects and had both pro-angiogenic and anti-inflammatory effects during the cardiac repair phase. Finally, we evaluated the cardiac function in mice treated with MgNPs/GA. Results: We provide evidence that GA released by MgNPs/GA can effectively eliminate ROS in the early stage, decreasing myocardial cell apoptosis. During the subsequent cardiac repair phase, the gradual release of Mg2+ from MgNPs/GA stimulated angiogenesis and promoted M2 macrophage polarization, thereby reducing the release of inflammatory factors. Conclusion: MgNPs/GA acting on multiple cell types is an integrated solution for comprehensive attenuation of myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion injury and cardiac function protection.

ABSTRACT

The Fe-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) catalyst shows a rich phase chemistry under pre-treatment and FTS conditions. The exact structural composition of the active site, whether iron or iron carbide (FeCx), is still controversial. Aiming to obtain an insight into the active sites and their role in affecting FTS activity, the swarm intelligence algorithm is implemented to search for the most stable Fe(100), Fe(110), Fe(210) surfaces with different carbon ratios. Then, ab initio atomistic thermodynamics and Wulffman construction were employed to evaluate the stability of these surfaces at different chemical potentials of carbon. Their FTS reactivity and selectivity were later assessed by semi-quantitative micro-kinetic equations. The results show that stability, reactivity, and selectivity of the iron are all affected by the carbonization process when the carbon ratio increases. Formation of the carbide, a rather natural process under experimental conditions, would moderately increase the turnover frequency (TOF), but both iron and iron carbide are active to the reaction.

Epidemiological evidence on the association between potassium and cardiometabolic outcomes remains controversial. This study aimed to examine associations of dietary intake and blood and urinary levels of potassium with risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and mortality. Relevant prospective studies were retrieved through a comprehensive search of four electronic databases up to July 1, 2023. Random-effects models were used to pool the study-specific relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Fifty-six studies were included in this meta-analysis. A higher intake of potassium was significantly associated with a 16% lower risk of CVD (RR: 0.84, 95% CI: 0.78-0.90). Similar inverse associations were also observed between potassium intake and mortality. Each 1.0 g/d increment in potassium intake was associated with a decreased risk of CVD (RR: 0.85, 95% CI: 0.80-0.91) and all-cause mortality (RR: 0.93, 95% CI: 0.88-0.99). For blood and urinary potassium levels, higher level of blood potassium increased the risk of all-cause mortality by 23% (RR: 1.23, 95% CI: 1.11-1.36). The association of blood potassium levels with mortality was nonlinear (Pnon-linearit<0.001). However, urinary potassium levels were inversely associated with the risk of all-cause mortality (RR: 0.84, 95% CI: 0.76-0.93). Our findings support the benefits of moderate potassium consumption for primary prevention of chronic diseases and premature death.

ABSTRACT

Aberrant levels of the G2/M cyclin cyclin B1 (gene CCNB1) have been associated with multiple cancers; however, the literature lacks a focused and comprehensive analysis of the regulation of this important regulator of cell proliferation in cancer. Through this work, we performed a pancancer analysis of the levels of CCNB1 and dissected aspects of regulation and how this correlates with cancer prognosis. We comprehensively evaluated the expression and promoter methylation of CCNB1 across 38 cancers based on RNA sequencing data obtained from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). The correlation of CCNB1 with prognosis and the tumor microenvironment was explored. Using lung adenocarcinoma data, we studied the potential upstream noncoding RNAs involved in the regulation of CCNB1 and validated the protein levels and prognostic value of CCNB1 for this disease site. CCNB1 was highly expressed, and promoter methylation was reduced in most cancers. Gene expression of CCNB1 correlated positively with poor prognosis of tumor patients, and these results were confirmed at the protein level using lung adenocarcinoma. CCNB1 expression was associated with the infiltration of T helper cells, and this further correlated with poor prognosis for certain cancers, including renal clear cell carcinoma and lung adenocarcinoma. Subsequently, we identified a specific upstream noncoding RNA contributing to CCNB1 overexpression in lung adenocarcinoma through correlation analysis, expression analysis and survival analysis. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the expression and methylation status of CCNB1 across several forms of cancer and provides further insight into the mechanistic pathways regulating Cyclin B1 in the tumorigenesis process.

ABSTRACT

Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is a nucleic acid amplification technique that has been widely used for the detection of pathogens in many organisms. Current LAMP-based sensors usually require the LAMP products to be labeled in order for them to be detected. Here, we present a novel label-free LAMP chip, which consists of a nanopore thin-film sensor embedded inside a LAMP reaction chamber. A fraction of LAMP primers is immobilized on the sensor surface, allowing the LAMP products to be synthesized and bound to the sensor surface via immobilized primers. After the LAMP reaction components are removed from the reaction chamber, the amplified LAMP products bound to the sensor surface give rise to significantly increased transducing signals, which can be measured by a portable optical spectrometer through an optical fiber probe. As a demonstration, we used the LAMP chip to detect the causal agent of late blight, Phytophthora infestans, which is one of the most devastating plant pathogens and poses a major threat to sustainable crop production worldwide. We show that this chip can detect as low as 1 fg/µL of P. infestans DNA in 30 min, which corresponds to an attomolar level of 1.6 × 10-6 attomole/µL and is at least 10 times more sensitive than the currently available methods. This label-free sensing technology holds great promise to open up a new avenue for ultrasensitive, highly specific, rapid, and cost-effective point-of-care diagnostics of plant, animal, human, and foodborne pathogens.

Background: This research focuses on the relationship between the changes in peripheral blood eosinophils (PBEs) perioperatively and the prognosis of lung cancer. Methods: The study included 414 lung cancer patients. These patients were divided into the DOWN (186 patients) and UP (209 patients) groups according to perioperative changes in PBEs. Furthermore, overall survival was compared based on pathological stage, pathological type, tumor location, age and sex. Furthermore, the authors analyzed the prediction of PBEs on the prognosis of chemotherapy. Results: The results showed that lung cancer patients in the DOWN group had a better prognosis (p = 0.0121; 95% CI: 0.6915 [0.5184-0.9224]), and the DOWN group patients with normal postoperative PBEs had a better prognosis (p = 0.0115; 95% CI: 0.6721 [0.4938-0.9148]). Conclusion: Lung cancer patients whose postoperative PBEs were lower than preoperative PBEs had a better prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Heart failure (HF) is the end stage of the progression of many cardiovascular diseases. Cardiac remodeling is the main pathophysiological process of cardiac function deterioration in HF patients. Inflammation is a key factor that stimulates cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, fibroblast proliferation, and transformation leading to myocardial remodeling, which severity is significantly related to the prognosis of patients. SAA1 (Serum amyloid A1) is a lipid-binding protein that was an important regulator involved in inflammation, whose biological functions in the heart remain rarely known. In this research, we intended to test the role of SAA1 in SAA1-deficient (SAA1-/- ), and wild-type mice were exposed to transverse aortic banding surgery to establish the model of cardiac remodeling. Besides, we assessed the functional effects of SAA1 on cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis. The expression of SAA1 was increased in the mice transverse aortic banding model induced by pressure overload. After 8 weeks of transverse aortic banding, SAA1-/- mice displayed a lower level of cardiac fibrosis than wild-type mice, but did not significantly influence the cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. In addition, there was also no significant difference in cardiac fibrosis severity between wild-type-sham and knockout-sham mice. These findings are the first to reveal SAA1 absence hinders cardiac fibrosis after 8 weeks of transverse aortic banding. Furthermore, SAA1 deficiency had no significant effect on cardiac fibrosis and hypertrophy in the sham group in this study.

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the psychological well-being (perceived stress and anxiety) of Chinese family members during nursing home visiting restrictions and to elucidate the relationships among satisfaction with care quality, emotion regulation, perceived stress, and anxiety. Methods: An online survey was conducted with a cross-sectional study design. From 18 to 29 January 2022, a total of 571 family members of nursing home residents completed online questionnaires comprising socio-demographic characteristics, satisfaction with care quality, emotion regulation, perceived stress, and anxiety. Mediation analyses were performed to estimate the direct and indirect effects of satisfaction with care quality on anxiety using the PROCESS macro for SPSS. Results: The results showed that approximately one-quarter of Chinese family members had anxiety symptoms during nursing home visiting restrictions. Satisfaction with care quality affected anxiety via three mediating paths: (a) through cognitive reappraisal (effect = 0.028); (b) through cognitive reappraisal and perceived stress sequentially (effect = -0.057); and (c) through perceived stress (effect = -0.212). The chain mediating effect (path b) accounted for 23.7% of the total effect. Conclusions: These findings corroborated our hypothesis that cognitive reappraisal (a kind of emotion regulation strategy) and perceived stress mediated the relationship between satisfaction with care quality and anxiety during nursing home visiting restrictions. Efforts to address family members' psychological well-being by focusing on cognitive reappraisal should be considered.

Rationale Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a lung disease with high mortality, limited treatment options and an unknown aetiology. M2 macrophages play a critical role in the pathological process of IPF. Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-2 (TREM2) participates in the regulation of macrophages, although its role in IPF remains elusive. METHODS: This study examined the role of TREM2 in macrophage regulation using a well-established bleomycin (BLM)-induced pulmonary fibrosis (PF) mouse model. TREM2 insufficiency was induced by intratracheal treatment with TREM2-specific siRNA. The effects of TREM2 on IPF were evaluated using histological staining and molecular biological methods. RESULTS: TREM2 expression levels were significantly elevated in the lungs of IPF patients and mice with BLM-induced pulmonary fibrosis mice. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that IPF patients with higher TREM2 expression had a shorter survival time, and that TREM2 expression was closely associated with fibroblasts and M2 macrophages. Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis showed that found TREM2-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were associated with inflammatory responses, extracellular matrix (ECM) and collagen formation. Single-cell RNA sequencing analysis revealed that TREM2 was predominantly expressed in macrophages. TREM2 insufficiency inhibited BLM-induced pulmonary fibrosis and M2 macrophage polarization. Mechanistic studies showed that TREM2 insufficiency suppressed the activation of STAT6 and the expression of fibrotic factors such as Fibronectin (Fib), Collagen I (Col I) and α- smooth muscle actin (α-SMA). CONCLUSION: Our study showed that TREM2 insufficiency might alleviate pulmonary fibrosis possibly through macrophage polarization regulation via STAT6 activation, providing a promising macrophage-related approach for the clinical therapy of pulmonary fibrosis.

OBJECTIVE: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a globally aggressive malignant tumor. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of JUND in ESCC development via MAPRE2. METHODS: ESCC cells (KYSE-450 and ECA109) were transfected with small interfering RNA (si)-JUND, si-MAPRE2, si-JUND, or pcDNA3.1-MAPRE2. JUND and MAPRE2 expression in ESCC cells was detected with quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot. Cell counting kit-8 and 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine assays were used to determine ESCC cell proliferation. Dual-luciferase reporter gene and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays were performed to assess binding between JUND and MAPRE2. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were co-cultured with ESCC cell supernatants. Angiogenesis was assessed with an in vitro angiogenesis assay. Western blot was conducted to evaluate the expression of angiogenic proteins [vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA), matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP-9), and angiopoietin-2 (ang2)]. RESULTS: The levels of expression of JUND and MAPRE2 were high in ESCC cells. Mechanistically, JUND bound to MAPRE2 promoter and increased MAPRE2 transcription. Downregulation of JUND or MAPRE2 inhibited KYSE-450 and ECA109 cell proliferation and reduced the levels of expression of VEGFA, MMP-9, and ang2 and tube formation in HUVECs co-cultured with ESCC cell supernatants. MAPRE2 upregulation counteracted the inhibitory effects of JUND silencing on cell proliferative and angiogenic capabilities in ESCC. CONCLUSIONS: JUND promoted MAPRE2 transcription, thereby facilitating cell proliferative and angiogenic abilities in ESCC.

ABSTRACT

Giardia duodenum (G. duodenalis) can cause giardiasis and infect a variety of hosts. So far, there have been no detailed data regarding the positive rate of G. duodenalis in cattle in China. Here, a systematic literature review was carried out to investigate the epidemiology of bovine G. duodenalis in China. To perform the meta-analysis, the databases China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP Chinese Journal Databases, WanFang Databases, PubMed, and ScienceDirect were employed for screening studies related to the prevalence of G. duodenalis in cattle in China. The total prevalence of G. duodenalis in cattle was estimated to be 8.00% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.51-11.62). In the age subgroup, the prevalence of G. duodenalis in calves (11.72%; 95% CI: 7.75-17.73) was significantly higher than that in cattle of other age groups. An analysis based on seasons showed that the prevalence of G. duodenalis in cattle was higher in summer (9.69%; 95% CI: 2.66-35.30) than that in other seasons. The prevalence of G. duodenalis in cattle in 2016 or later was 11.62% (95% CI: 6.49-20.79), which was significantly higher than that before 2016 (3.65%; 95% CI: 2.17-6.12). The highest prevalence of G. duodenalis in cattle was 74.23% (95% CI: 69.76-78.45) recorded in South China. The NOAA's National Center for Environmental Information (https://gis.ncdc.noaa.gov/maps/ncei/cdo/monthly) was used to extract relevant geoclimatic data (latitude, longitude, elevation, temperature, precipitation, humidity, and climate). By analyzing the data of each subgroup, it was shown that age of cattle, sampling year, province, region, temperature, and climate were potential risk factors for giardiasis prevalence in cattle. Based on the analysis of common factors and geographical factors, it is recommended to strengthen effective management measures (e.g., ventilation and disinfection in warm and humid areas) and formulate relevant policies according to local conditions. Breeders should pay more attention to the detection of G. duodenalis in calves, to prevent giardiasis prevalence in cattle of different ages, thereby reducing the economic losses of animal husbandry in China.

ABSTRACT

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the most common form of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Hypoxia has been found in 50-60% of locally advanced solid tumors and is associated with poor prognosis in various tumors, including NSCLC. This study focused on hypoxia-associated molecular hallmarks in LUAD. Fifteen hypoxia-related genes were selected to define the hypoxia status of LUAD by ConsensusClusterPlus based on data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Then, we investigated the immune status under different hypoxia statuses. Subsequently, we constructed prognostic models based on hypoxia-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs), identified hypoxia-related microRNAs, lncRNAs and mRNAs, and built a network based on the competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) theory. Two clusters (Cluster 1 and Cluster 2) were identified with different hypoxia statuses. Cluster 1 was defined as the hypoxia subgroup, in which all 15 hypoxia-associated genes were upregulated. The infiltration of CD4+ T cells and Tfh cells was lower, while the infiltration of regulatory T (Treg) cells, the expression of PD-1/PD-L1 and TMB scores were higher in Cluster 1, indicating an immunosuppressive status. Based on the DEGs, a risk signature containing 7 genes was established. Furthermore, three differentially expressed microRNAs (hsa-miR-9, hsa-miR-31, hsa-miR-196b) associated with prognosis under different hypoxia clusters and their related mRNAs and lncRNAs were identified, and a ceRNA network was built. This study showed that hypoxia was associated with poor prognosis in LUAD and explored the potential mechanism from the perspective of the gene signature and ceRNA theory.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: Clinically, recurrent chylothorax is challenging to solve, especially when chylothorax is still present after the thoracic duct is ligated. In this study we explored alternative surgical options to treat complex cases of recurrent chylothorax. Methods: Clinical records, laboratory results, and magnetic resonance imaging scans were retrospectively reviewed for 3 patients with recurrent chylothorax who were admitted to Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, Wuhan, China, from August 8, 2016, to October 30, 2019. Evidence from the surgical treatment of thoracic duct-venous anastomosis was assessed using pictures from the operation room, with follow-up until now. Results: Thoracic duct ligation had failed twice in patient 1, and the other 2 patients each had thoracic duct ligation that failed once again. After undergoing thoracic duct ligation, all 3 patients showed a significant reduction in chest fluid, but their condition soon returned to the same as that before ligation. All 3 patients finally underwent thoracic duct-venous anastomosis. The changes in lymphocyte and granulocyte numbers in the blood system of the patients before and after the operation were not substantial, and the operations had little effect on liver and kidney function. The patients achieved satisfactory treatment results, with follow-up until the present (23-60 months). Conclusions: This research shows that thoracic duct-venous anastomosis is a safe and effective alternative surgical approach for complex recurrent chylothorax.

ABSTRACT

The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal mental health has been described in Canada and China but no study has compared the two countries using the same standardized and validated instruments. In this study, we aimed to evaluate and compare the impact of COVID-19 public health policies on maternal mental health between Canada and China, as we hypothesize that geographical factors and different COVID-19 policies are likely to influence maternal mental health. Pregnant persons >18 years old were recruited in Canada and China using a web-based strategy. All participants recruited between 26 June 2020 and 16 February 2021 were analyzed. Self-reported data included sociodemographic variables, COVID-19 experience and maternal mental health assessments (Edinburgh Perinatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Generalized Anxiety Disorders (GAD-7) scale, stress and satisfaction with life). Analyses were stratified by recruitment cohort, namely: Canada 1 (26 June 2020-10 October 2020), Canada 2 and China (11 October 2020-16 February 2021). Overall, 2423 participants were recruited, with 1804 participants within Canada 1, 135 within Canada 2 and 484 in China. The mean EDPS scores were 8.1 (SD, 5.1) in Canada 1, 8.1 (SD, 5.2) in Canada 2 and 7.7 (SD, 4.9) in China (p-value Canada 2/China: p = 0.005). The mean GAD-7 scores were 2.6 (SD, 2.9) in China, 4.3 (SD, 3.8) in Canada 1 (p < 0.001) and 5.8 (SD, 5.2) in Canada 2 (p < 0.001). When adjusting for stress and anxiety, being part of the Chinese cohort significantly increased the chances of having maternal depression by over threefold (adjusted OR 3.20, 95%CI 1.77-5.78). Canadian and Chinese participants reported depressive scores nearly double those of other crises and non-pandemic periods. Lockdowns and reopening periods have an important impact on levels of depression and anxiety among pregnant persons.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (E. granulosus s.l.) larvae. It is mainly prevalent in western agricultural and pastoral areas in China, seriously affecting the development of public health and animal husbandry. METHODS: This study conducted a systematic evaluation and meta-analysis of bovine CE in China in the past 10 years (2011-2020). Five databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, CNKI, Wanfang Data, VIP Chinese Journal Database) were used to collect the relevant references, and finally 77 published articles were obtained. RESULTS: The total prevalence of bovine CE was estimated to be 9.62% during decade, and decreased year by year after reaching its peak in 2014 (18.75%). The highest E. granulosus s.l. infection rate was found in Qinghai province (14.79%). The infection rate of cattle >4 years old (15.84%) was significantly higher than that of other age groups, and cattle raised by grazing was significantly higher than that of other methods (17.00%). In the groups of geographical and climatic factors, the prevalence of CE was higher in regions with high-altitude (20.76%), cold (20.76%) and rainy areas (11.33%). CONCLUSION: This study found that old age and grazing were two important factors for the high incidence of bovine CE. The prevalence of CE is higher in low temperature, rainy and high altitude areas, where may be more suitable for the survival of E. granulosus s.l. eggs.
