ABSTRACT

In order to re-utilize the residual from the distillation of the Chinese wolfberry wine and reduce the environmental pollution, the residual is firstly filtered by the ceramic membrane of 50 nm, then the Cu (II) has transferred from the distillation is removed using the ion exchange resin, and the treated solution is recombined with the distilled liquor to make the Chinese wolfberry brandy and the comparison has conducted on the physicochemical properties, antioxidant activity and flavor compounds between the recombined brandy and the finished brandy. The results indicate that the Cu (II) was effectively removed by ceramic membrane combined with the D401 resin. Compared with finished brandy, the recombined brandy contains high contents of polysaccharides, phenols and flavonoids, thus contributing to the improvement of antioxidant capacity. The gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) reveals that 25 volatile compounds like esters and alcohols have identified in the brandy samples, and the differences are significant between the recombined and the finished brandy. In summary, the distilled residual from the Chinese wolfberry wine might be re-used after the appropriate treatment so as to reduce the discharge and environmental pollution.

ABSTRACT

Oligosaccharides are low-molecular-weight carbohydrates between monosaccharides and polysaccharides. They can be extracted directly from natural products by physicochemical methods or obtained by chemical synthesis or enzymatic reaction. Oligosaccharides have important physicochemical and physiological properties. Their research and production involve many disciplines such as medicine, chemical industry, and biology. Functional oligosaccharides, as an excellent functional food base, can be used as dietary fibrer and prebiotics to enrich the diet; improve the microecology of the gut; exert antitumour, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and lipid-lowering properties. Therefore, the industrial applications of oligosaccharides have increased rapidly in the past few years. It has great prospects in the field of food and medicinal chemistry. This review summarized the preparation, structural features and biological activities of oligosaccharides, with particular emphasis on the application of functional oligosaccharides in the food industry and human nutritional health. It aims to inform further research and development of oligosaccharides and food chemistry.

ABSTRACT

Selenium (Se) is an indispensable trace element with versatile functions in antioxidant defense in poultry. In our previous study, we synthesized a novel type of biogenic selenium nanoparticle based on alginate oligosaccharides (SeNPs-AOS), and found that the particles are sized around 80 nm with an 8% Se content, and the dietary addition of 5 mg/kg of SeNPs-AOS could effectively alleviate the deleterious effects of heat stress (HS) in broilers, but it is still unclear whether SeNPs-AOS can improve the meat quality. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effects of SeNPs-AOS on breast meat quality in heat-stressed broilers, and explore the relevant mechanisms. Birds at the age of 21 days were randomly divided into four groups with six replicates per group (eight broilers per replicate) according to a 2 × 2 experimental design, using HS (33 ± 2 °C, 10 h/day vs. thermoneutral, TN, under 23 ± 1.5 °C) and SeNPs-AOS (5 mg/kg feed vs. no inclusion) as variables. The results showed that dietary SeNPs-AOS decreased the cooking loss (p < 0.05), freezing loss (p < 0.001), and shear force (p < 0.01) of breast muscle in heat-stressed broilers. The non-targeted metabolomics analysis of the breast muscle identified 78 differential metabolites between the HS and HS + SeNPs-AOS groups, mainly enriched in the arginine and proline metabolism, ß-alanine metabolism, D-arginine and D-ornithine metabolism, pantothenate, and CoA biosynthesis pathways (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, supplementation with SeNPs-AOS increased the levels of the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), the activities of catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and decreased the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the breast muscle (p < 0.05) in broilers under HS exposure. Additionally, SeNPs-AOS upregulated the mRNA expression of CAT, GPX1, GPX3, heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), masculoaponeurotic fibrosarcoma G (MafG), MafK, selenoprotein W (SELENOW), SELENOK, ferritin heavy polypeptide-1 (FTH1), Ferroportin 1 (Fpn1), and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) (p < 0.05), while it downregulated Kelch-like ECH-associated pro-36 tein 1 (Keap1) and prostaglandin-endoperoxide Synthase 2 (PTGS2) expression (p < 0.05) in broilers under HS. These findings demonstrated that the dietary addition of SeNPs-AOS mitigated HS-induced oxidative damage and metabolite changes in the breast muscle of broilers, which may be related to the regulation of the Nrf2 signaling pathway and selenoprotein synthesis. In addition, SeNPs-AOS upregulated the breast muscle gene expression of anti-ferroptosis-related molecules in broilers under HS, suggesting that SeNPs-AOS can be used as novel Se supplements against HS in broilers.

In the present study, it was aimed to evaluate whether there is an objective tongue image indicator that could be used to evaluate malignant risk of thyroid nodules through a cross sectional study. From December 2018 to December 2020, the TFDA-1 digital tongue-face diagnostic instrument was used to collect the tongue images. TDAS 2.0 software was used for tongue image analysis. A standardized database was constructed by combining patient physical examination results and tongue image analysis results. The relationship between tongue image index and TI-RADS classification of thyroid nodules was tested. A total of 5,900 cases were collected and 4,615 cases were included in the present study after excluding 154 cases due to incomplete information, 1,221 cases with thyroid nodules were separated into 417 cases TI-RADS 2 group, 693 cases in TI-RADS 3 group and 111 cases in TI-RADS 4 group. Without considering confounding factors, tongue image indexes zhiCon, zhiASM, zhiENT, zhiMEAN, zhiClrB, zhiClrR, zhiClrG, zhiClrI, zhiClrL and zhiClrY were significantly different among the three groups (P<0.05). Excluding the influence of age, sex, body mass index, smoking and drinking, the results of one-way variance linear trend analysis showed that the values of zhiCon, zhiENT and zhiMEAN increased with the increasing TI-RADS category, while the values of zhiASM decreased with the increase of TI-RADS category. Tongue texture index may be helpful for differentiating the benign and malignant of thyroid nodules.

ABSTRACT

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by toxigenic fungi under specific environmental conditions. Fruits, owing to their high moisture content, rich nutrition, and improper harvest or storage conditions, are highly susceptible to various mycotoxins, such as ochratoxin A (OTA), zearalenone (ZEN), patulin (PAT), Alternaria toxins, etc. These mycotoxins can cause acute and chronic toxic effects (teratogenicity, mutagenicity, and carcinogenicity, etc) in animals and humans. Given the high toxicity and wide prevalence of mycotoxins, establishing an efficient analytical method to detect multiple mycotoxins simultaneously in different types of fruits is of great importance. Conventional mycotoxin detection methods rely on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS). However, fruit sample matrices contain large amounts of pigments, cellulose, and minerals, all of which dramatically impede the detection of trace mycotoxins in fruits. Therefore, the efficient enrichment and purification of multiple mycotoxins in fruit samples is crucial before instrumental analysis. In this study, a reliable method based on a QuEChERs sample preparation approach coupled with ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) was established to determine 36 mycotoxins in fruits. In the optimal extraction method, 2.0 g of a sample was extracted with 10 mL of acetic acid-acetonitrile-water (1∶79∶20, v/v/v) in a 50 mL centrifuge tube, vortexed for 30 s, and ultrasonicated for 40 min. The mixture was then salted out with 2.0 g of anhydrous MgSO4 and 0.5 g of NaCl and centrifuged for 5 min. Next, 6 mL of the supernatant was purified using 85 mg of octadecylsilane-bonded silica gel (C18) and 15 mg of N-propylethylenediamine (PSA). After vigorous shaking and centrifugation, the supernatant was collected and dried with nitrogen at 40 ℃. Finally, the residues were redissolved in 1 mL of 5 mmol/L ammonium acetate aqueous solution-acetonitrile (50∶50, v/v) and passed through a 0.22 µm nylon filter before analysis. The mycotoxins were separated on a Waters XBridge BEH C18 column using a binary gradient mixture of ammonium acetate aqueous solution and methanol. The injection volume was 3 µL. The mycotoxins were analyzed in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode under both positive and negative electrospray ionization. Quantitative analysis was performed using an external standard method with matrix-matched calibration curves. Under optimal conditions, good linear relationships were obtained in the respective linear ranges, with correlation coefficients (R2) no less than 0.990. The limits of detection (LODs) and quantification (LOQs) were 0.02-5 and 0.1-10 µg/kg, respectively. The recoveries of the 36 mycotoxins in fruits ranged from 77.0% to 118.9% at low, medium, and high spiked levels, with intra- and inter-day precisions in the range of 1.3%-14.9% and 0.2%-17.3%, respectively. The validated approach was employed to investigate mycotoxin contamination in actual fruit samples, including strawberry, grape, pear, and peach (15 samples of each type). Eleven mycotoxins, namely, altenuene (ALT), altenusin (ALS), alternariol-methyl ether (AME), tenuazonic acid (TeA), tentoxin (Ten), OTA, beauvericin (BEA), PAT, zearalanone (ZAN), T-2 toxin (T2), and mycophenolic acid (MPA), were found in the samples; three samples were contaminated with multiple mycotoxins. The incidence rates of mycotoxins in strawberry, grape, pear, and peach were 27%, 40%, 40%, and 33%, respectively. In particular, Alternaria toxins were the most frequently found mycotoxins in these fruits, with an incidence of 15%. The proposed method is simple, rapid, accurate, sensitive, reproducible, and stable; thus, it is suitable for the simultaneous detection of the 36 mycotoxins in different fruits.

Background: Although the beneficial effects of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) on infants and mothers have been identified, EBF rates remain unsatisfactory. Co-parenting interventions for perinatal couples have not been systematically evaluated and analyzed for their effects on breastfeeding outcomes. Aims and Objectives: To systematically evaluate the effects of co-parenting interventions on the rate of EBF, breastfeeding knowledge, breastfeeding attitude, breastfeeding self-efficacy, parental relationship, and partner support. Methods: Randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies were systematically screened in eight online databases from inception to November 2022. Trials included in this review were assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment Tool. Eligible trials were used to conduct a meta-analysis using Review Manager software. The I2 statistic was used to assess heterogeneity between studies. When it was not possible to conduct a meta-analysis, a descriptive analysis was used to present the findings due to insufficient data from the included studies. Results: Fifteen of the 1,869 articles reviewed met the inclusion criteria. Co-parenting interventions significantly improved the EBF rate at 16 weeks (odds ratio [OR] = 3.85, 95% confidence interval, CI [1.84 to 8.03], p < 0.001, I2 = 69%) and 6 months (OR = 2.82, 95% CI [1.47 to 5.41], p = 0.002, I2 = 85%). This study revealed that co-parenting interventions made statistically significant improvements in parental relationship (standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.26, 95% CI [0.13 to 0.38], p < 0.001, I2 = 80%). There was no evidence of the effectiveness of interventions in terms of overall parental support (SMD = 0.75, 95% CI [-0.46 to 1.97], p < 0.001, I2 = 96%). Given the discrepant and limited research data, findings on breastfeeding knowledge, breastfeeding attitudes, and breastfeeding self-efficacy were presented descriptively. Conclusion: Co-parenting interventions effectively increase EBF rates at 16 weeks and 6 months postpartum, and improve breastfeeding knowledge, breastfeeding attitude, and parental relationships.

BACKGROUND: Health professionals, including nurses, experienced heavy workloads and significant physical and mental health challenges during the coronavirus disease (COVID) 19 pandemic, which may affect career choices for those considering nursing and for nursing students. The COVID-19 pandemic is not only a period of risk, but also an occasion to redeploy the professional identity (PI) of nursing students. However, the relationship between perceived social support (PSS), self-efficacy (SE), PI and anxiety remains unclear under the background of COVID-19. This study aims to explore whether PSS has an indirect effect on PI through mediation of SE and whether the anxiety can moderate the relationship between PSS and SE in nursing students during their internship period. METHODS: An observational, national cross-sectional study was conducted following the STROBE guidelines. An online questionnaire was completed by 2,457 nursing students from 24 provinces in China during their internship during September to October 2021. Measures included Chinese translations of the Professional Identity Questionnaire for Nursing Students, the Perceived Social Support Scale, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, the 7-item Generalized Anxiety disorder scale. RESULTS: Both PSS (r = 0.46, p < 0.001) and SE (r = 0.51, p < 0.001) were positively correlated with PI. The indirect effect of PSS on PI through SE was positive (ß = 0.348, p < 0.001), with an effect of 72.7%. The results of the moderating effect analysis showed that anxiety attenuated the effect of PSS on SE. Moderation models indicated that anxiety has a weak negative moderating effect on the effect of PSS on SE (ß =-0.0308, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: A better PSS and higher scores in SE were associated with PI in nursing students, and a better PSS had an indirect effect on the PI of nursing students through SE. Anxiety played a negative moderating role in the relationship between PSS and SE.

BACKGROUND: Helping patients and families to relieve severe pain and manage grief are issues that palliative care is designed to address, but integrating these topics in nursing education and practice requires increased attention. It is necessary to understand the knowledge and attitudes of nursing students to develop a targeted approach toward integrating palliative care in practice settings. OBJECTIVES: To investigate attitudes and knowledge toward palliative care among undergraduate nursing students in China and to explore correlations and associated factors. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. SETTINGS: Seven comprehensive universities in China. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 582 undergraduate nursing students participated. METHODS: Online questionnaires were available from December 2020 to February 2021. The Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale and the Palliative Care Quiz for Nursing were used to measure students' attitude and knowledge of palliative care. Descriptive and correlational methods were used to analyse the associated factors and their correlation with knowledge and attitudes. RESULTS: Attitude scores showed significant differences in gender, education level, religious preference, previous education in palliative care, experience in caring for dying patients and previous experience with bereavement. Knowledge of palliative care was influenced by gender, religious preference, prior education in palliative care, experience in caring for dying patients, and previous experience with bereavement. A positive correlation exists between knowledge and attitudes toward palliative care among undergraduate nursing students. CONCLUSIONS: The findings highlight the need to offer palliative care courses in nursing education and practice settings in Chinese health care settings. Nurse educators need to integrate the concept of palliative care into the curriculum of nursing education programs. Healthcare administrators and nurse leaders should promote investment and training in the education of nurses in practice settings to deliver high-quality palliative care services.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Renal-hepatic-pancreatic dysplasia type 1 (RHPD1) is a rare sporadic and autosomal recessive disorder with unknown incidence. RHPD1 is caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in NPHP3, which encode nephrocystin, an important component of the ciliary protein complex. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report, we describe a male newborn who was confirmed by ultrasound to have renal enlargement with multiple cysts, pancreatic enlargement with cysts, and increased liver echogenicity, leading to the clinical diagnosis of RHPD. In addition, a compound heterozygous pathogenic variant, namely, NPHP3 c.1761G > A (p. W587*) and the c.69delC (p. Gly24Ala24*11) variant, was detected by WES. The patient was clinically and genetically diagnosed with RHPD1. At 34 h of life, the infant died of respiratory insufficiency. CONCLUSION: This is the first published case of RHPD1 in China. This study broadens the known range of RHPD1 due to NPHP3 pathogenic variants.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of simple intraspinal anesthesia and combined fascia iliaca compartment block(FICB) on total hip arthroplasty(THA) through anterior lateral small incision (orthop dische chirurgie München, OCM). METHODS: From January 2019 to October 2020, patients undergoing unilateral total hip arthroplasty were treated with intraspinal anesthesia combined with ultrasound-guided fascia iliaca compartment block(30 cases in group A) and simple intraspinal anesthesia(30 cases in group B). Two groups were treated with the same intravenous analgesia after operation. The operation time, the amount of bleeding, the peeling degree of middle gluteal muscle, the splitting of greater trochanter of femur, the visual analysis scale (VAS) of hip joint after operation, the abductor muscle strength of quadriceps femoris and hip joint before and 48 hours after operation, and the Harris score of hip joint function after operation were observed and compared between two groups. RESULTS: All patients were followed up for 48 to 62 weeks with an average of (54.2±4.0) weeks. The incision length, operation time and intraoperative bleeding in group A were significantly lower than those in group B (P<0.05). The level of hemoglobin 24 hours after operation in group A was significantly higher than that in group B (P<0.05). The abductor muscle strength of hip joint in group A was significantly higher than that in group B 48 hours after operation (P<0.05). The degree of middle gluteal muscle dissection in group A was significantly lower than that in group B (P<0.05). The VAS of group A at 8, 12 and 24 hours after operation was significantly lower than that of group B (P<0.05);The Harris score in group A was significantly higher than that in group B at 2 and 8 weeks after operation (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The application of ultrasound-guided fascia iliaca compartment block in lateral position OCM approach THA can significantly shorten the operation time, reduce the amount of bleeding, reduce the perihip trauma such as the peeling of middle gluteal muscle during operation, and improve the early postoperative pain of patients, which is conducive to the clinical operation of OCM approach and the rapid postoperative recovery of patients.

ABSTRACT

With global warming, heat stress (HS) has become a worldwide concern in both humans and animals. The ameliorative effect of seaweed (Enteromorpha prolifera) derived polysaccharides (SDP) on HS-induced oxidative stress and the inflammatory response of an immune organ (spleen) was evaluated using an animal model (Gallus gallus domesticus). In total, 144 animals were used in this 4-week trial and randomly assigned to the following three groups: thermoneutral zone, HS, and HS group supplemented with 1000 mg/kg SDP. Dietary SDP improved the antioxidant capacity and reduced the malondialdehyde (MDA) of the spleen when exposed to HS, regulated via enhancing nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor-2 (Nrf2) signaling. Furthermore, the inclusion of SDP reduced the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and alleviated HS-induced splenic inflammatory response by suppressing the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) p65 signaling. These findings suggest that the SDP from E. prolifera can be used as a functional food and/or feed supplement to attenuate HS-induced oxidative stress and inflammatory responses of the immune organs. Moreover, the results could contribute to the development of high-value marine products from seaweed for potential use in humans and animals, owing to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

BACKGROUND: Arrhythmia is not uncommon among pulmonary hypertension (PH) population, and may be associated with disease severity. HYPOTHESIS: To investigate different spectrums and prevalence of arrhythmias in different clinical PH groups in Chinese population. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with PH between April 15, 2019, and August 2, 2021, were enrolled prospectively. The prevalence of different types of arrhythmias in PH patients were calculated. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine independent predictors for arrhythmia. RESULTS: One thousand patients were enrolled. The prevalence of any arrhythmia, sinus node dysfunction, sinus tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, other types of atrial tachycardia, atrioventricular block, and ventricular tachycardia is 44.4%, 12.2%, 15.2%, 8.1%, 4.1%, 10.2%, 7.1%, and 2.5%. Logistic regression analyses revealed that older age and larger right ventricle (odds ratio: 1.111 and 1.095, p < .05) were independently related with higher probability of supraventricular arrhythmia; Complicating with coronary artery disease, larger right ventricle, and increased left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (odds ratio: 19.540, 1.106, and 1.085, p < .05) were independently correlated with sinus node dysfunction/atrioventricular block in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension. CONCLUSIONS: Nearly half of PH patients experienced at least one type of arrhythmia. The most common seen arrhythmias were supraventricular arrhythmia, sinus tachycardia, and sinus node dysfunction. Older age and larger right ventricle were independently related with higher probability of supraventricular arrhythmia; Complicating with coronary artery disease, larger right ventricle and increased left ventricular end-diastolic diameter were independently correlated with higher probability of sinus node dysfunction/atrioventricular block in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension.

To evaluate the ameliorative effect of algae-derived polysaccharide (ADP) supplementation on duodenal injury caused by heat stress (HS) in broilers, a total of 144 male yellow-feathered broilers (56-day-old) were randomly allocated into three groups: The TN group (thermoneutral zone, broilers were raised at 23.6 ± 1.8 °C); HS group (heat stress, broilers were exposed to 33.2 ± 1.5 °C 10 h/day, 8:00 a.m.-18:00 p.m., the temperature in the remaining period was consistent with the TN group); HSA group (heat-stressed broilers were fed with ADP supplemented diet at 1000 mg/kg). There were six replications in each treatment, and eight broilers in each replication. The feeding trial lasted four weeks. The results showed that dietary ADP supplementation tended to increase the villus height (p = 0.077) and villus width (p = 0.062), and decrease the apoptosis rate (p = 0.081) in the duodenum of broilers under HS. Furthermore, dietary ADP increased the relative mRNA and protein (based on immunofluorescence) expression levels of occludin and zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) in the duodenum of broilers under HS (p < 0.05). In addition, dietary ADP enhanced the total antioxidation capacity (T-AOC) and activity of glutathione-S transferase (GST), while reducing the malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration of the duodenum in broilers under HS (p < 0.05). Moreover, dietary ADP supplementation upregulated the duodenal nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPx1) and glutathione S-transferase theta 1 (GSTT1) mRNA expression levels in heat-stressed broilers (p < 0.05). Furthermore, compared with the HS group, broilers fed with an ADP supplemented diet had a higher relative mRNA expression of inhibitor kappa B alpha (IκBα) (p < 0.05) and a lower relative mRNA expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) in the duodenum (p < 0.05). In summary, dietary ADP supplementation had an ameliorative effect on HS-induced impairment of tight junctions, antioxidant capacity and the immune response of the duodenum in broilers. These beneficial effects might be related to the modulation of Nrf2 and NF-κB signaling pathways.

ABSTRACT

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of Enteromorpha polysaccharides (EP) on relative organ weight of broilers, and RNA-seq technique was used to reveal the potential molecular mechanisms of the positive effects of EP on relative organ weight. A total of 396 1-day-old male chicks (Arbor Acres) were randomly assigned to six dietary treatments containing EP at 0 (EP0), 1000 (EP1000), 2500 (EP2500), 4000 (EP4000), 5500 (EP5500), and 7000 (EP7000) mg/kg levels for a 35-day feeding trial. At the end of feeding trail, six birds (one bird from each replicate cage) were randomly selected from each treatment and then slaughtered for relative organ weight analysis. The results showed that the relative weight of bursa of Fabricius were increased in the EP1000 group (p < 0.05), and then three bursa of Fabricius samples from each group (EP0 and EP1000) were randomly selected for RNA-seq analysis. The results of RNA-seq analysis showed that there were 20 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between EP0 and EP1000 groups, among the DEGs, 6 genes were upregulated and 14 genes were downregulated by EP1000 supplementation (p-adjust < 0.05). Gene ontology (GO) enrichment analysis suggested that the DEGs were mainly enriched in negative regulation of toll-like receptor 9 signaling pathway (p-corrected < 0.05). Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis showed that the DEGs were mainly enriched in phagosome, mitophagy-animal, Salmonella infection, autophagy-animal signaling pathways (p-corrected = 0.081). Taken together, dietary EP supplementation at 1000 mg/kg level promoted the relative weight of bursa of Fabricius may be involved in improving the immune function of broilers. These findings provided a reference for further exploring the specific molecular mechanism of EP that affecting the organ development in broilers.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of dietary algae-derived polysaccharides (ADP) from Enteromorpha prolifera against heat stress (HS)-induced bursa of Fabricius injure in broilers, and to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the protective effect. A total of 144 8-week-old male yellow-feathered broilers were randomly allocated into 3 treatments of 6 replicates each (8 broilers per replicate): thermoneutral zone group (TN, fed basal diet); heat stress group (HS, fed basal diet); heat stress + ADP group (HSA, basal diet supplemented with 1,000 mg/kg ADP). Broilers in TN group were raised at 23.6 ± 1.8°C during the whole study. Broilers in HS and HSA groups were exposed to 33.2 ± 1.5°C for 10 h/day. The experimental period lasted for four weeks. The results showed that HS and dietary ADP had no significant effects on bursa of Fabricius index (P > 0.05). HS exposure increased the apoptosis rate of bursa of Fabricius (P < 0.05), and the apoptosis rate was reduced by dietary ADP (P < 0.05). Besides, broilers in HS and HSA groups had a lower glutathione-S transferase (GST) activity and total anti-oxidation capacity (T-AOC), whereas had a higher malondialdehyde (MDA) levels of bursa of Fabricius than those in TN group (P < 0.05). HS exposure elevated the concentration of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-4, and IL-6, while decreased the concentration of interferon-γ (INF-γ) and IL-2 (P < 0.05), and dietary inclusion of ADP reduced the IL-1ß level and increased the IL-2 level of bursa of Fabricius (P < 0.05). Compared with TN group, broilers in HS and HSA groups had lower relative mRNA expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and GSTT1 in bursa of Fabricius (P < 0.05). Additionally, HS exposure down-regulated the mRNA expression of inhibitor kappa B alpha (IκBα), IFN-γ, and IL-2, while up-regulated the mRNA expression of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) p65, TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6 in bursa of Fabricius (P < 0.05). However, dietary inclusion of ADP up-regulated the mRNA expression of IκBα and down-regulated the mRNA expression of NF-κB p65, TNF-α, and IL-6 in bursa of Fabricius (P < 0.05). Furthermore, HS exposure increased the relative protein expression levels of total and nuclear NF-κB p65 (P < 0.05), but dietary ADP supplementation reduced the relative protein expression levels of total and nuclear NF-κB p65 in bursa of Fabricius (P < 0.05). Collectively, dietary ADP ameliorated the impairment of histology, cell apoptosis and immune balance in bursa of Fabricius of heat stressed broilers, which is involved in modulation of NF-κB signaling pathway.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: To explore the clinical effect of early combined rehabilitation intervention on premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). METHODS: Premature infants with gestational ages less than 32 weeks or birth weights less than 1500 g were included in the present study.The participants were divided into the intervention group and control group. All infants received the current routine treatment based on the clinical guidelines, and the intervention group was additionally treated by visual and auditory stimulation, oral motor function, respiratory function and neurodevelopmental training. The following clinical outcomes were compared: durations of oxygen supplementation and indwelling gastric tube use; incidences of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC); Sliverman scores; incidences of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and intraventricular haemorrhage; days of hospitalization; and neurodevelopmental outcomes. Datas were analysed using the following statistical tests: the chi-square test, the independent samples or paired t test, repeated measures ANOVA, and the Wilcoxon rank sum test. RESULTS: Compared with those in the control group, premature infants in the intervention group had shorter durations of oxygen supplementation and indwelling gastric tube use, fewer hospitalization days and lower incidences of ROP, BPD, and NEC.The intervention group had lower Sliverman scores and higher Ballard neuromuscular scores than the control group. CONCLUSION: Early combined rehabilitation intervention can improve the short-term clinical outcomes of premature infants.

ABSTRACT

Salt cedar is an ornamental shrub/moderate tree species native to Asia and East Europe, and grows in salt-alkali soil, desert and other dry areas, which plays an important role in wind prevention and sand fixation as well as maintaining ecological balance. Salt cedar witches'-broom (SCWB), which was extremely pernicious to Salt cedar. It was first observed and reported in Xi'an, China in 2005 (Zhao et al.2005). Witches' broom symptoms were observed on 20 out of 150 (13.3%) salt plants surveyed from the Alar region and 10 out of 86 (11.6%) plants from the Akesu region in southern of Xinjiang in May 2020. The damaged plants compared with asymptomatic plants (Fig.1A), the major symptoms included branches clustered, intersegment shorten and coarsen, giving rise to the formation of clusters (Fig.1B). Total plant DNA was extracted from phloem tissues with asymptomatic symptoms and phloem tissues with witches'-broom symptoms by a CTAB-based DNA extraction method (Green et al.1999). The 16S rRNA gene and the phytoplasma universal primers P1/P7 and rpF1/rpR1 of the rp (ribosomal protein) gene were used for Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification by using the extracted plant total DNA as the template. The PCR product was used as the template and the R16F2n/R16R2 prmer was used for nested PCR amplification of the 16S rRNA gene after the amplification was completed. The results show that no product was obtained in asymptomatic plants. When DNA samples from witches'-broom symptomatic plants were used as templates, fragments with lengths 1219 bp and 1174 bp, corresponding to 16S rRNA gene and rp gene, were obtained. 16S rRNA gene was sequenced and deposited in GenBank under accession number MW447513. BLAST analysis revealed that the partial 16S rRNA sequence of the phytoplasma associated with P. aphylla witches' broom showed highest sequence identity (99.67%) to salt cedar witches' broom phytoplasma, 'Candidatus Phytoplasma tamaricis' (Accession Number: FJ432664). Phylogenetic and molecular evolutionary analyses were conducted using MEGA-X (Kumar et al., 2018). Results showed taht the SCWB and 16S rXXX group's'Candidatus Phytoplasma tamaricis', (GenBank accession: FJ432664) have the highest affinity (Fig.2A). A virtual restriction fragment length polymorphism(RFLP) was done to determinethe subgroup ( Zhao et al. 2009). The 16S rDNA sequence from the Tamarix chinensis plant showed 99.3% similarity with that of the "Candidatus Phytoplasma tamaricis" reference strain (GenBank accession: FJ432664), suggesting that the phytoplasma in this study belongs to "Candidatus Phytoplasma tamaricis"-related strain. Therefore, it can be stated that SCWB belongs to the 16S rXXX group. The partial rp sequences only shared 84.74% sequence similarity with that of 'Candidatus Phytoplasma prunorum' (MG383523) of Apple proliferation group, a known subgroup 16S rX. Blast analysis based on the partial rp sequences showed that it shares less than 90% similarity with that of any known phytoplasma (Fig 2B), we suspect that this is due to a lack of sequenced rp gene sequences for the 16S rXXX group. To our knowledge, this is the first report of Salt Cedar Witches' Broom phytoplasma in Xinjiang province, China. As a consequence, we guess the SCWB phytoplasma rp gene belongs to 16S rXXX-rp group, which is also the first report about the 16SrXXX-rp group. Because SCWB1 is the only strain in the 16S rXXX group, and it is the representative strain of the 16S rXXX-A subgroup (Zhao et al. 2009). So, the SCWB disease we found in southern Xinjiang belongs to the 16S rXXX-A subgroup.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Tai Chi shows potential as a safe and cost-effective intervention to improve bone mineral density (BMD). However, the various effects caused by different training durations and frequencies have not been evaluated. This updated systematic review aims to explore the effectiveness of Tai Chi in attenuating bone mineral density loss based on different training durations and frequencies. METHODS: We conducted an extensive database search in Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database, Wanfang Data, and China Science and Technology Journal Database on randomized controlled trials that examined Tai Chi for BMD improvement. Two reviewers independently performed data screening and extraction. Study quality was evaluated using the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. RESULTS: A total of 23 randomized controlled trials involving 1582 patients were identified. The aggregated results have shown significant benefits in favor of Tai Chi on BMD improvement in the lumbar spine (SMD = 0.36, 95% [0.13, 0.59], P=0.002), femoral neck (SMD = 0.40, 95% [0.16, 0.63], P=0.0009), femoral trochanter (SMD = 0.43, 95% CI [0.20, 0.66], P=0.0002), and Ward's triangle (SMD = 0.31, 95% [0.15, 0.48], P=0.002). Such favorable benefits in Tai Chi can only be seen when compared with the nonexercise group, and Tai Chi showed no significant improvement in BMD change when compared with other exercises group. Subgroup analyses showed various effects of BMD improvement based on different training durations and frequencies of Tai Chi. Tai Chi is effective in attenuating BMD loss with an intervention frequency of >4 days/week in the lumbar spine, with an intervention frequency of >4 days/week or an intervention duration of >10 months in the femoral neck, and with an intervention duration of >10 months or a frequency of ≤4 days/week in Ward's triangle. CONCLUSIONS: The results demonstrated that Tai Chi may have benefits in attenuating BMD loss. Different training durations and frequencies may result in variable effectiveness. Researchers should focus more on the training durations and frequencies of Tai Chi so that a more definitive claim can be made regarding the beneficial effects for BMD improvement.

ABSTRACT

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) causes toxic effect and leads to organ damage in broilers. Marine algal polysaccharides (MAP) of Enteromorpha prolifera exert multiple biological activities, maybe have a potential detoxification effect on AFB1, but the related research in broilers is extremely rare. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate whether MAPs can alleviate AFB1-induced oxidative damage and apoptosis of bursa of Fabricius in broilers. A total of 216 five-week-old male indigenous yellow-feathered broilers (with average initial body weight 397.35 ± 6.32 g) were randomly allocated to one of three treatments (6 replicates with 12 broilers per replicate), and the trial lasted 4 wk. Experimental groups were followed as basal diet (control group); basal diet mixed with 100 µg/kg AFB1 (AFB1 group, the AFB1 is purified form); basal diet with 100 µg/kg AFB1 + 2,500 mg/kg MAPs (AFB1 + MAPs group). The results showed that the diet with AFB1 significantly decreased the relative weight of bursa of Fabricius (P < 0.05), antioxidant enzymes activities of total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and total antioxidation capacity (T-AOC), while increased malondialdehyde (MDA) content (P < 0.05). Besides, compared with AFB1 group, dietary MAPs improved the relative weight of bursa of Fabricius and activities of antioxidant enzymes (T-SOD, GSH-Px, CAT, GST) with decreased MDA contents (P < 0.05). Moreover, the consumption of AFB1 downregulated the mRNA expression of SOD1, SOD2, GSTA3, CAT1, GPX1, GPx3, GSTT1, Nrf2, HO-1, and p38MAPK (P < 0.05). Dietary MAPs upregulated the mRNA expression of SOD2, GSTA3, CAT1, GPX1, GSTT1, p38MAPK, Nrf2, and HO-1 in comparison with AFB1 group (P < 0.05). The histological analysis confirmed restoration of apoptotic cells of bursa of Fabricius (P < 0.01), which seen with MAPs supplemented broilers. Besides, dietary MAPs down-regulated the mRNA expression of caspase-3 and Bax (P < 0.05), while up-regulated the mRNA expression of Bcl-2 (P < 0.05) compared with AFB1 group. In addition, according to protein expression results, dietary MAPs up-regulated the protein expression level of antioxidant and apoptosis-associated proteins (Nrf2, HO-1, p38MAPK, Bcl-2) (P < 0.01), but down-regulated the protein expression level of caspase-3 and Bax (P < 0.01). In conclusion, dietary MAPs alleviated AFB1-induced bursa of Fabricius injury through regulating Nrf2-mediated redox and mitochondrial apoptotic signaling pathway in broilers.
