ABSTRACT

New-fashioned electrode hosts for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are elaborately engineered to involve multifunctional active components that can synergistically conquer the critical issues of severe volume deformation and sluggish reaction kinetics of electrodes toward immensely enhanced battery performance. Herein, it is first reported that single-phase CoPS, a new metal phosphosulfide for SIBs, in the form of quantum dots, is successfully introduced into a leaf-shaped conductive carbon nanosheet, which can be further in situ anchored on a 3D interconnected branch-like N-doped carbon nanofiber (N-CNF) to construct a hierarchical branch-leaf-shaped CoPS@C@N-CNF architecture. Both double carbon decorations and ultrafine crystal of the CoPS in-this exquisite architecture hold many significant superiorities, such as favorable train-relaxation, fast interfacial ion-migration, multi-directional migration pathways, and sufficiently exposed Na+ -storage sites. In consequence, the CoPS@C@N-CNF affords remarkable long-cycle durability over 10 000 cycles at 20.0 A g-1 and superior rate capability. Meanwhile, the CoPS@C@N-CNF-based sodium-ion full cell renders the potential proof-of-feasibility for practical applications in consideration of its high durability over a long-term cyclic lifespan with remarkable reversible capacity. Moreover, the phase transformation mechanism of the CoPS@C@N-CNF and fundamental springhead of the enhanced performance are disclosed by in situ X-ray diffraction, ex situ high-resolution TEM, and theoretical calculations.

ABSTRACT

Ammonia (NH3 ) is an indispensable feedstock for fertilizer production and one of the most ideal green hydrogen rich fuel. Electrochemical nitrate (NO3 - ) reduction reaction (NO3 - RR) is being explored as a promising strategy for green to synthesize industrial-scale NH3 , which has nonetheless involved complex multi-reaction process. This work presents a Pd-doped Co3 O4 nanoarray on titanium mesh (Pd-Co3 O4 /TM) electrode for highly efficient and selective electrocatalytic NO3 - RR to NH3 at low onset potential. The well-designed Pd-Co3 O4 /TM delivers a large NH3 yield of 745.6 µmol h-1 cm-2 and an extremely high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 98.7% at -0.3 V with strong stability. These calculations further indicate that the doping Co3 O4 with Pd improves the adsorption characteristic of Pd-Co3 O4 and optimizes the free energies for intermediates, thereby facilitating the kinetics of the reaction. Furthermore, assembling this catalyst in a Zn-NO3 - battery realizes a power density of 3.9 mW cm-2 and an excellent FE of 98.8% for NH3 .

ABSTRACT

The ongoing stream of sensory experience is so complex and ever-changing that we tend to parse this experience at "event boundaries," which structures and strengthens memory. Memory processes undergo profound change across early childhood. Whether young children also divide their ongoing processing along event boundaries, and if those boundaries relate to memory, could provide important insight into the development of memory systems. In Study 1, 4-7-year-old children and adults segmented a cartoon, and we tested their memory. Children's event boundaries were more variable than adults' and differed in location and consistency of agreement. Older children's event segmentation was more adult-like than younger children's, and children who segmented events more like adults had better memory for those events. In Study 2, we asked whether these developmental differences in event segmentation had their roots in distinct neural representations. A separate group of 4-8-year-old children watched the same cartoon while undergoing an fMRI scan. In the right hippocampus, greater pattern dissimilarity across event boundaries compared to within events was evident for both child and adult behavioral boundaries, suggesting children and adults share similar event cognition. However, the boundaries identified by a data-driven Hidden Markov Model found that a different brain region-the left and right angular gyrus-aligned only with event boundaries defined by children. Overall, these data suggest that children's event cognition is reasonably well-developed by age 4 but continues to become more adult-like across early childhood. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Adults naturally break their experience into events, which structures and strengthens memory, but less is known about children's event perception and memory. Study 1 had adults and children segment and remember events from an animated show, and Study 2 compared those segmentations to other children's fMRI data. Children show better recognition and temporal order memory and more adult-like event segmentation with age, and children who segment more like adults have better memory. Children's and adults' behavioral boundaries mapped onto pattern similarity differences in hippocampus, and children's behavioral boundaries matched a data-driven model's boundaries in angular gyrus.

ABSTRACT

Synthesis of green ammonia (NH3 ) via electrolysis of nitric oxide (NO) is extraordinarily sustainable, but multielectron/proton-involved hydrogenation steps as well as low concentrations of NO can lead to poor activities and selectivities of electrocatalysts. Herein, it is reported that oxygen-defective TiO2 nanoarray supported on Ti plate (TiO2- x /TP) behaves as an efficient catalyst for NO reduction to NH3 . In 0.2 m phosphate-buffered electrolyte, such TiO2- x /TP shows competitive electrocatalytic NH3 synthesis activity with a maximum NH3 yield of 1233.2 µg h-1  cm-2 and Faradaic efficiency of 92.5%. Density functional theory calculations further thermodynamically faster NO deoxygenation and protonation processes on TiO2- x (101) compared to perfect TiO2 (101). And the low energy barrier of 0.7 eV on TiO2- x (101) for the potential-determining step further highlights the greatly improved intrinsic activity. In addition, a Zn-NO battery is fabricated with TiO2- x /TP and Zn plate to obtain an NH3 yield of 241.7 µg h-1  cm-2 while providing a peak power density of 0.84 mW cm-2 .

ABSTRACT

Electrochemical nitrate (NO3 - ) reduction reaction (NO3 - RR) is a potential sustainable route for large-scale ambient ammonia (NH3 ) synthesis and regulating the nitrogen cycle. However, as this reaction involves multi-electron transfer steps, it urgently needs efficient electrocatalysts on promoting NH3  selectivity. Herein, a rational design of Co nanoparticles anchored on TiO2  nanobelt array on titanium plate (Co@TiO2 /TP) is presented as a high-efficiency electrocatalyst for NO3 - RR. Density theory calculations demonstrate that the constructed Schottky heterostructures coupling metallic Co with semiconductor TiO2  develop a built-in electric field, which can accelerate the rate determining step and facilitate NO3 - adsorption, ensuring the selective conversion to NH3 . Expectantly, the Co@TiO2 /TP electrocatalyst attains an excellent Faradaic efficiency of 96.7% and a high NH3  yield of 800.0 µmol h-1  cm-2  under neutral solution. More importantly, Co@TiO2 /TP heterostructure catalyst also presents a remarkable stability in 50-h electrolysis test.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the role of the long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) terminal differentiation-induced noncoding RNA (TINCR) on the proliferation, apoptosis, and invasion of liver cancer cells and its mechanism. Methods: The expression of lncRNA TINCR in twenty cases of liver cancer tissues, matched liver cancer cell lines, and paracancerous tissues was analyzed by RT-PCR. CCK-8, clonogenic test, flow cytometry, and Transwell assay were used to measure the effect of lncRNA TINCR overexpression and knockdown on cell proliferation, apoptosis, and invasion. Luciferase reporter and Western blotting showed that lncRNA TINCR regulates the expression of ATG7 through miR-375, and the rescue experiment proved that lncRNA TINCR controls the invasion and proliferation of liver cancer cells via the miR-375/ATG7 signaling pathway. Furthermore, in vivo nude mouse assay demonstrated that overexpression of lncRNA TINCR inhibited liver cancer cell growth. Results: The lncRNA TINCR was highly expressed in liver cancer tissues and cell lines. Liver cancer cells responded differently to knockdown of the lncRNA TINCR compared to overexpression in terms of proliferation, colony formation, and invasion. miR-375 negatively affected the expression of ATG7. The lncRNA TINCR bound to miR-375 and influenced its expression. Transfection of miR-375 mimics greatly inhibited the inhibitory effect of lncRNA TINCR knockdown on the invasion and proliferation, whereas transfection of miR-375 inhibitor considerably reverses this effect on liver cancer cells. Overexpressing lncRNA TINCR increased liver cancer cell proliferation in vivo. Conclusion: By controlling the miR-375/ATG7 axis, the lncRNA TINCR impacts the proliferation and invasion of liver cancer cells. Therefore, the lncRNA TINCR/miR-375/ATG7 signaling axis could be a novel biological target for the diagnosis and therapy of liver cancer.

ABSTRACT

Visual comparison is a key process in everyday learning and reasoning. Recent research has discovered the spatial alignment principle, based on the broader framework of structure-mapping theory in comparison. According to the spatial alignment principle, visual comparison is more efficient when the figures being compared are arranged in direct placement-that is, juxtaposed with parallel structural axes. In this placement, (1) the intended relational correspondences are readily apparent, and (2) the influence of potential competing correspondences is minimized. There is evidence for the spatial alignment principle in adults' visual comparison (Matlen et al., 2020). Here, we test whether it holds for children. Six- and eight-year-old children performed a same-different task over visual pairs. The results indicated that direct placement led to faster and more accurate comparison, both for concrete same-different matches (matches of both objects and relations) and for purely relational matches-evidence that the same structural alignment process holds for visual comparison in 6- and 8-year-olds as in adults. These findings have implications for learning and education.

ABSTRACT

Two experiments examined factors that predicted children's tendencies to match objects versus relations across scenes when no instruction was given. Specifically, we assessed the presence of higher relational responding in children by (a) age, (b) greater presumed experience in generating relations through socialization in China versus the United States, and (c) in children with greater manipulated experience via a relational priming task. Experiment 1 showed that Chinese and U.S. children across all ages showed an initial bias to match objects versus relations across scenes. However, older children in both regions were more likely to notice features of the task that indicated attending to relational matches was a more reliable solution, and shifted their responding toward relations over the course of the task. Experiment 2 replicated the object-mapping bias and age effects within U.S. children while also examining the impact of directly manipulating children's relational experiences to test the malleability of the bias. Before the main scene-mapping task, children did a relation generation task known to prime attention to relations. This did not override the initial bias toward object mapping, but it magnified the role of age, making older children increasingly sensitive to task features that prompted relational matches, further shifting their responding toward relations over the course of the task.

To analyze magnetic resonance imaging features of nodular fasciitis and redefine the system for classifying this class of lesions.Twenty-seven patients with nodular fasciitis and 71 patients with other soft tissue lesions who underwent surgery or biopsy were retrospectively analysed. Demographic information, medical history, and magnetic resonance imaging features were collected. Classification of nodular fasciitis was performed based on a redefined system. Comparison between 2 groups was performed with Chi-square or Fisher exact test.For nodular fasciitis, the longest average lesion diameter was 1.87 cm (range, 0.52-5.46 cm), and 40.7% of lesions were located in the upper extremities, while 29.6% were located in the head and neck. Compared with skeletal muscle, most lesions exhibited isointensity on T1-weighted imaging and hyperintensity on T2-weighted imaging, and 45.5% of the lesions exhibited rim enhancement, 40.9% showed obvious homogenous enhancement, while 13.6% showed no enhancement or slight enhancement. The subcutaneous type accounted for 25.9% of cases, the fascial type 25.9%, the intramuscular type 29.6%, and the unclassified type 18.5%. The "fascia tail sign" was more frequently observed in nodular fasciitis than in other soft tissue lesions (P < .001). Nodular fasciitis was slightly more likely to present with the "inverted target sign" and "solar halo sign" than other soft tissue lesions (P > .05). The "cloud sign" only appeared in nodular fasciitis (P < .05).The "fascia tail sign" and "cloud sign" could help differentiate nodular fasciitis from other soft tissue lesions. A new classification may improve understanding about nodular fasciitis.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of postresection intra-arterial chemotherapy (IAC) on prognosis of stage 2-3 gallbladder cancer (GBC) after curative resection. METHODS: Between May 2010 and August 2014, 76 cases of GBC accepted curative surgery in our center and were pathologically staged as 2-3. After resection, 37 underwent 4 courses of intravenous chemotherapy (IVC) following 2 courses of IAC (ART group), and 39 received 6 courses of IVC (SYS group). Both the IAC and IVC regimens consisted of oxaliplatin (85 mg/m2) on day 1 and gemcitabine (800 mg/m2) on day 1 and day 8. Chemotherapy-related complications, disease-free survival (DFS), overall survival (OS), and hepatic metastases-free survival (HMFS) were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Patient characteristics and chemotherapy complications did not differ between the two groups. There was no significant difference in 3-year DFS of the two groups (p=0.0822, HR=0.6270; 95% CI, 0.3627 to 1.0838). The ART group had significantly higher 3-year OS (p=0.0378, HR=0.5460; 95% CI, 0.3025 to 0.9856) and 3-year HMFS (p=0.0414, HR=0.5187; 95% CI, 0.2706 to 0.9940) than the SYS group. CONCLUSIONS: IAC could effectively and safely decrease postresection hepatic metastases and improve 3-year HMFS and OS of stage 2-3 GBC.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of postoperative hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) on long-term survival of patients with pancreatic cancer (PC) after radical pancreatectomy. METHODS: A total of 87 patients with PC underwent radical pancreatectomy in the First People's Hospital affiliated to Huzhou Normal College between June 2008 and May 2013. Among these patients, after surgery, 43 received two sessions of HAIC followed by four sessions of systemic chemotherapy (HAIC group), while 44 received six sessions of systemic chemotherapy alone (control group). Both the HAIC and systemic chemotherapy regimen included 5-fluorouracil (1,000 mg/m2) as a 5-h infusion on day 1, and gemcitabine (800 mg/m2) as an over 30-min infusion on days 1 and 8. The toxicity, complication, and long-term survival were retrospectively compared. RESULTS: No significant difference in patient characteristics between the two groups was found. No chemotherapy-related deaths were recorded, and no significant difference in toxicities was observed between the two groups. The 5-year disease-free survival probability did not differ between the two groups (P=0.2029, hazard ratio for recurrence=0.7561; 95% CI=0.4768-1.1989, by the log-rank test). The HAIC group had significantly higher 5-year overall survival probability (P=0.0288, hazard ratio for death=0.6059; 95% CI=0.3734-0.9832, by the log-rank test) and higher 5-year hepatic metastases-free survival probability (P=0.0321, hazard ratio for hepatic metastases=0.5006; 95% CI=0.2546-0.9843, by the log-rank test) than the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Postoperative HAIC has the potential to prevent hepatic metastases and increase long-term survival probability of patients with PC after radical pancreatectomy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of postoperative hepatic artery-infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) on survival probability in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after radical hepatectomy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 85 patients with HCC who received radical hepatectomy from May 2005 to May 2010. Among these patients, 42 underwent two sessions of HAIC (5-fluoruracil [1,000 mg/m2], oxaliplatin [85 mg/m2], and mitomycin-C [6 mg/m2]) after radical hepatectomy (HAIC group), and 43 underwent radical hepatectomy only (the control group). HAIC-related side effects and long-term survival were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: The HAIC group showed a significantly higher 5-year intrahepatic recurrence-free survival probability and lower risk of intrahepatic recurrence (HR 0.5615, 95% CI 0.3234-0.9749 [log-rank test]; P=0.0332). The HAIC group also had significantly higher 5-year disease-free survival probability (HR 0.591, 95% CI 0.3613-0.9666 [log-rank test]; P=0.0298) and overall survival probability than the control group (HR 0.5768, 95% CI 0.3469-0.9589 [log-rank test]; P=0.0278). No HAIC-related deaths in the HAIC group were reported. All toxicities and complications were controlled, and no patients quit the treatment. CONCLUSION: HAIC can effectively and safely reduce intrahepatic recurrence and improve the long-term survival of patients with HCC after radical hepatectomy.

ABSTRACT

The treatment efficacy of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is still not promising. This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) combined with transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) for unresectable HCC with a single treatment.Between June 2009 and June 2012, 132 patients who were diagnosed with unresectable HCC and accepted nonsurgical treatments in our center were enrolled in this retrospective study. On the basis of treatment modality, they were allocated to 3 groups: 49 patients accepted RFA (RFA group); 43 patients accepted TACE (TACE group); and 40 patients accepted RFA following TACE (combination group). Clinical data including complications, treatment success rate, hospitalization costs, intrahepatic recurrence-free survival, overall survival, and factors influencing survival were retrospectively analyzed.Patient characteristics between these groups showed no significant difference. Treatment success was achieved in all patients of 3 groups. The combination group had a significantly higher total hospitalization cost to treatment than the TACE group (63,708.14 ±â€Š9193.81 Chinese yuan vs 37,534.88 ±â€Š6802.84 Chinese yuan; P = 0.0000). All complications were controllable and no permanent adverse sequelae or procedure-related deaths were observed. The 3-year intrahepatic recurrence-free survival probability was significantly better in the combination group than in the TACE group (42.50% vs 20.93%; hazard ratio [HR], 0.5105; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.3022-0.8625; P = 0.0094) or the RFA group (42.50% vs 22.45%; HR, 0.5233; 95% CI, 0.3149-0.8697; P = 0.0111).The 3-year overall survival probability was significantly better in the combination group than in the TACE group (45.00% vs 26.53%; HR, 0.5069; 95% CI, 0.2936-0.8752; P = 0.0100) or the RFA group (45.00% vs 27.91%; HR, 0.4913; 95% CI, 0.2928-0.8246; P = 0.0054). Main tumor size, number of tumors, and treatment modality were demonstrated to be important factors associated with 3-year intrahepatic recurrence-free survival probability and overall survival probability (P < 0.05) by univariate and multivariate analyses.Combination therapy of RFA and TACE was superior to TACE alone or RFA alone in improving survival for patients with unresectable HCC.
