ABSTRACT

Introduction: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) constitutes a life-threatening condition, and identifying the ruptured aneurysm is essential for further therapy. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of hypo-attenuating berry sign (HBS) observed on computed tomography (CT) scan in distinguishing ruptured aneurysms. Methods: In this diagnostic accuracy study, patients who had SAH and underwent non-enhanced brain CT scan were recruited. The HBS was defined as a hypo-attenuating area with an identifiable border in the blood-filled hyper-dense subarachnoid space. The screening performance characteristics of HBS in identifying ruptured aneurysms were calculated considering the digital subtraction angiography (DSA) as the gold standard. Results: A total of 129 aneurysms in 131 patients were analyzed. The overall sensitivity and specificity of HBS in the diagnosis of aneurysms were determined to be 78.7% (95%CI: 73.1% - 83.4%) and 70.7% (95%CI: 54.3% - 83.4%), respectively. Notably, the sensitivity increased to 90.9% (95%CI: 84.3% - 95.0%) for aneurysms larger than 5mm. The level of inter-observer agreement for assessing the presence of HBS was found to be substantial (kappa=0.734). The diagnostic accuracy of HBS in individuals exhibited enhanced specificity, sensitivity, and reliability when evaluating patients with a solitary aneurysm or assessing ruptured aneurysms. The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed a statistically significant relationship between aneurysm size and the presence of HBS (odds ratios of 1.667 (95%CI: 1.238 - 2.244; p < 0.001) and 1.696 (95%CI: 1.231 - 2.335; p = 0.001) for reader 1 and reader 2, respectively). Conclusions: The HBS can serve as a simple and easy-to-use indicator for identifying a ruptured aneurysm and estimating its size in SAH patients.  .

ABSTRACT

The current study investigated how autistic traits modulate peer interactions using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning. Across three experiments, we tested the effect of copresence, joint activity, and a tangible goal during cooperative interactions on interbrain coherence (IBC) in school-aged children between 9 and 11 years old. Twenty-three dyads of children watched a video alone or together in Experiment 1, engaged in joint or self-paced book reading in Experiment 2, and pretended to play a Jenga game or played for real in Experiment 3. We found that all three formats of social interactions increased IBC in the frontotemporoparietal networks, which have been reported to support social interaction. Further, our results revealed the shared and unique interbrain connections that were predictive of the lower and higher parent-reported autism-spectrum quotient scores, which indicated child autistic traits. Results from a convergence of three experiments provide the first evidence to date that IBC is modulated by child autistic traits.

ABSTRACT

Ghost imaging techniques using low-cost bucket detectors have unrivaled advantages for some wavebands where plane array detectors are not available or where focusing is difficult. In these bands, fine mask plates are the key to implementing high-resolution and quality ghost imaging. However, manufacturing a large number of mask plates is necessary but undoubtedly expensive in traditional Hadamard ghost imaging (HGI). Inspired by the spread spectrum technology, Hadamard ghost imaging based on spread spectrum (HGI-SS) is proposed, in which only two sets of a small number of mask plates are needed to accomplish Nyquist sampling for the object. Their numbers are equal to the lateral pixel resolution and the vertical pixel resolution of the object, respectively. Optical experiments verify the effectiveness of the scheme. For ghost imaging with a resolution requirement of 128 × 128 pixels, HGI-SS needs to prepare only 256 mask plates, while the traditional HGI needs to prepare 16,384 mask plates. HGI-SS may be helpful to expand the pixel resolution of imaging at a relatively low cost of mask plates.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To comprehensively assess the impact of aging, cigarette smoking, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on pulmonary physiology using 129Xe MR. METHODS: A total of 90 subjects were categorized into four groups, including healthy young (HY, n = 20), age-matched control (AMC, n = 20), asymptomatic smokers (AS, n = 28), and COPD patients (n = 22). 129Xe MR was utilized to obtain pulmonary physiological parameters, including ventilation defect percent (VDP), alveolar sleeve depth (h), apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), total septal wall thickness (d), and ratio of xenon signal from red blood cells and interstitial tissue/plasma (RBC/TP). RESULTS: Significant differences were found in the measured VDP (p = 0.035), h (p = 0.003), and RBC/TP (p = 0.003) between the HY and AMC groups. Compared with the AMC group, higher VDP (p = 0.020) and d (p = 0.048) were found in the AS group; higher VDP (p < 0.001), d (p < 0.001) and ADC (p < 0.001), and lower h (p < 0.001) and RBC/TP (p < 0.001) were found in the COPD group. Moreover, significant differences were also found in the measured VDP (p < 0.001), h (p < 0.001), ADC (p < 0.001), d (p = 0.008), and RBC/TP (p = 0.032) between the AS and COPD groups. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that pulmonary structure and functional changes caused by aging, cigarette smoking, and COPD are various, and show a progressive deterioration with the accumulation of these risk factors, including cigarette smoking and COPD. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Pathophysiological changes can be difficult to comprehensively understand due to limitations in common techniques and multifactorial etiologies. 129Xe MRI can demonstrate structural and functional changes caused by several common factors and can be used to better understand patients' underlying pathology. KEY POINTS: Standard techniques for assessing pathophysiological lung function changes, spirometry, and chest CT come with limitations. 129Xe MR demonstrated progressive deterioration with accumulation of the investigated risk factors, without these limitations. 129Xe MR can assess lung changes related to these risk factors to stage and evaluate the etiology of the disease.

ABSTRACT

Background: Low-dose colchicine has been shown to lower major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) among those with cardiovascular disease (CVD). It remains unclear how long a CVD patient needs to live to potentially benefit from colchicine. Our study aimed to determine the time to benefit (TTB) of colchicine in individuals with CVD. Methods: Literature searches were performed in PubMed for the cardiovascular outcome trial of colchicine in patients with CVD until October 12, 2023. The primary outcome measured was MACE. Reconstructed individual participant data (IPD) and the stratified Cox proportional hazards model were used to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) to estimate the efficacy of colchicine, and Weibull survival curves were fitted to estimate TTB for specific absolute risk reduction (ARR) thresholds (0.002, 0.005, and 0.01). Results: Four trials randomizing 11,594 adults aged between 59.8 and 66.5 years were included (follow-up duration: 12-28.6 months). Compared with placebo, colchicine reduced the risk of MACE (HR 0.68, 95 % CI: 0.60 to 0.78) but had no impact on cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. A TTB of 11.0 months (95 % CI: 0.59 to 21.3) was estimated to be needed to prevent 1 MACE in 100-colchicine-treated patients. The TTB for acute coronary syndrome was similar compared to stable coronary artery disease (10.7 vs. 11.2 months for ARR = 0.010). Conclusions: By using reconstructed IPD, this pooled analysis demonstrated that colchicine was associated with reduced nonfatal MACE, and the TTB was approximately 11.0 months to prevent 1 MACE per 100 patients.

ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is recognized as a risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). High glucose levels have been implicated in inducing epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), contributing to the progression of various cancers. However, the molecular crosstalk remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the molecular mechanisms linking DM to HCC. Initially, the expression of NCAPD2 in HCC cells and patients was measured. A series of functional in vitro assays to examine the effects of NCAPD2 on the malignant behaviors and EMT of HCC under high glucose conditions were then conducted. Furthermore, the impacts of NCAPD2 knockdown on HCC proliferation and the ß-catenin pathway were investigated in vivo. In addition, bioinformatics methods were performed to analyze the mechanisms and pathways involving NCAPD2, as well as its association with immune infiltration and drug sensitivity. The findings indicated that NCAPD2 was overexpressed in HCC, particularly in patients with DM, and its aberrant upregulation was linked to poor prognosis. In vitro experiments demonstrated that high glucose upregulated NCAPD2 expression, enhancing proliferation, invasion, and EMT, while knockdown of NCAPD2 reversed these effects. In vivo studies suggested that NCAPD2 knockdown might suppress HCC growth via the ß-catenin pathway. Functional enrichment analysis revealed that NCAPD2 was involved in cell cycle regulation and primarily interacted with NCAPG, SMC4, and NCAPH. Additionally, NCAPD2 was positively correlated with EMT and the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway, whereas knockdown of NCAPD2 inhibited the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway. Moreover, NCAPD2 expression was significantly associated with immune cell infiltration, immune checkpoints, and drugs sensitivity. In conclusion, our study identified NCAPD2 as a novel oncogene in HCC and as a potential therapeutic target for HCC patients with DM.

INTRODUCTION: Objective: Often there is the need of moving endodontically treated teeth. Orthodontic movement may have no effect on the prognosis of teeth with root canal treatment (RCT). To verify this subject, we evaluated the effect of orthodontic movement on the prognosis of RCT teeth using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and further explored the influence of orthodontic movement on the prognosis of RCT teeth with and without apical periodontitis (AP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted by evaluating 169 RCT teeth of 100 patients who had undergone fixed orthodontic treatment. AP was assessed and classified using the CBCT periapical index. Univariate analysis of RCT outcome was performed for the total RCT group, RCT without AP group and RCT with AP group. Multivariate logistic regression was performed for the total RCT group and RCT without AP group, respectively, but not for the RCT with AP group. Variables related to the prognosis of RCT were included, such as age, gender, tooth position, RCT quality, coronal restoration quality, periodontal condition, orthodontic traction distance, and orthodontic rotation angle. RESULTS: The orthodontic traction distance and rotation angle were not significantly correlated to the RCT outcomes, regardless of the presence of AP. Among the total RCT group, teeth with unqualified RCT (OR = 3.42, P = 0.004) and inadequate coronal restoration (OR = 4.40, P = 0.031) had a lower success rate. Of the 97 RCT teeth without AP, unqualified RCT was a risk factor for treatment failure (OR = 3.55, P = 0.041). Of the 72 RCT teeth with AP, the univariate analysis showed that RCT quality were significantly related to the outcome (p = 0.042). CONCLUSION: Orthodontic movement had no effect on the prognosis of RCT teeth regardless of the presence of AP.

BACKGROUND: The aim of our research was to examine the association of novel anthropometric indices (a body shape index (ABSI), waist-to-height ratio (WtHR), conicity index (CI) and body roundness index (BRI)) and traditional anthropometric indices (body mass index (BMI), and waist (WC)) with prevalence of kidney stone disease (KSD) in the general population of United States (U.S.). METHODS: In this study, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis among the participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between the years 2007 and 2020. Weighted multivariable logistic regression analysis, restricted cubic spline (RCS), receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and subgroup analysis were performed to analyze the association of ABSI, BRI, WtHR, CI, BMI and WC with prevalence of KSD. RESULTS: In total, 11,891 individuals were included in our study. The RCS plot shown that the linear positive association was found between ABSI, BRI, WtHR, CI, BMI and WC and KSD risk. Additionally, the ROC curve demonstrated that the area under the curve of ABSI, BRI, WtHR, and CI was significantly higher than traditional anthropometric indices, including BMI and WC. CONCLUSIONS: Our study found that the discriminant ability of ABSI, BRI, WtHR, and CI for KSD was higher than BMI and WC. Consequently, ABSI, BRI, WtHR, and CI have the potential to become new indicators for the detection of KSD risk in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

Aspartate ß-hydroxylase (ASPH) is a protein associated with malignancy in a wide range of tumors. We hypothesize that inhibition of ASPH activity could have anti-tumor properties in patients with head and neck cancer. In this study, we screened tumor tissues of 155 head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients for the expression of ASPH using immunohistochemistry. We used an ASPH inhibitor, MO-I-1151, known to inhibit the catalytic activity of ASPH in the endoplasmic reticulum, to show its inhibitory effect on the migration of SCC35 head and neck cancer cells in cell monolayers and in matrix-embedded spheroid co-cultures with primary cancer-associated fibroblast (CAF) CAF 61137 of head and neck origin. We also studied a combined effect of MO-I-1151 and HfFucCS, an inhibitor of invasion-blocking heparan 6-O-endosulfatase activity. We found ASPH was upregulated in HNSCC tumors compared to the adjacent normal tissues. ASPH was uniformly high in expression, irrespective of tumor stage. High expression of ASPH in tumors led us to consider it as a therapeutic target in cell line models. ASPH inhibitor MO-I-1151 had significant effects on reducing migration and invasion of head and neck cancer cells, both in monolayers and matrix-embedded spheroids. The combination of the two enzyme inhibitors showed an additive effect on restricting invasion in the HNSCC cell monolayers and in the CAF-containing co-culture spheroids. We identify ASPH as an abundant protein in HNSCC tumors. Targeting ASPH with inhibitor MO-I-1151 effectively reduces CAF-mediated cellular invasion in cancer cell models. We propose that the additive effect of MO-I-1151 with HfFucCS, an inhibitor of heparan 6-O-endosulfatases, on HNSCC cells could improve interventions and needs to be further explored.

ABSTRACT

Immunotherapy with chimeric antigen receptor T cells for pediatric solid and brain tumors is constrained by available targetable antigens. Cancer-specific exons present a promising reservoir of targets; however, these have not been explored and validated systematically in a pan-cancer fashion. To identify cancer specific exon targets, here we analyze 1532 RNA-seq datasets from 16 types of pediatric solid and brain tumors for comparison with normal tissues using a newly developed workflow. We find 2933 exons in 157 genes encoding proteins of the surfaceome or matrisome with high cancer specificity either at the gene (n = 148) or the alternatively spliced isoform (n = 9) level. Expression of selected alternatively spliced targets, including the EDB domain of fibronectin 1, and gene targets, such as COL11A1, are validated in pediatric patient derived xenograft tumors. We generate T cells expressing chimeric antigen receptors specific for the EDB domain or COL11A1 and demonstrate that these have antitumor activity. The full target list, explorable via an interactive web portal ( https://cseminer.stjude.org/ ), provides a rich resource for developing immunotherapy of pediatric solid and brain tumors using gene or AS targets with high expression specificity in cancer.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study aimed to analyze active compounds and signaling pathways of CH applying network pharmacology methods, and to additionally verify the molecular mechanism of CH in treating AP. Materials and methods: Network pharmacology and molecular docking were firstly used to identify the active components of CH and its potential targets in the treatment of AP. The pancreaticobiliary duct was retrogradely injected with sodium taurocholate (3.5%) to create an acute pancreatitis (AP) model in rats. Histological examination, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, Western blot and TUNEL staining were used to determine the pathway and mechanism of action of CH in AP. Results: Network pharmacological analysis identified 168 active compounds and 276 target proteins. In addition, there were 2060 targets associated with AP, and CH had 177 targets in common with AP. These shared targets, including STAT3, IL6, MYC, CDKN1A, AKT1, MAPK1, MAPK3, MAPK14, HSP90AA1, HIF1A, ESR1, TP53, FOS, and RELA, were recognized as core targets. Furthermore, we filtered out 5252 entries from the Gene Ontology(GO) and 186 signaling pathways from the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes(KEGG). Enrichment and network analyses of protein-protein interactions predicted that CH significantly affected the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, which played a critical role in programmed cell death. The core components and key targets showed strong binding activity based on molecular docking results. Subsequently, experimental validation demonstrated that CH inhibited the phosphorylation of PI3K and AKT in pancreatic tissues, promoted the apoptosis of pancreatic acinar cells, and further alleviated inflammation and histopathological damage to the pancreas in AP rats. Conclusion: Apoptosis of pancreatic acinar cells can be enhanced and the inflammatory response can be reduced through the modulation of the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, resulting in the amelioration of pancreatic disease.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the feasibility of zigzag sampling for 3D rapid hyperpolarized 129Xe ventilation MRI in human. METHODS: Zigzag sampling in one direction was combined with gradient-recalled echo sequence (GRE-zigzag-Y) to acquire hyperpolarized 129Xe ventilation images. Image quality was compared with a balanced SSFP (bSSFP) sequence with the same spatial resolution for 12 healthy volunteers (HVs). For another 8 HVs and 9 discharged coronavirus disease 2019 subjects, isotropic resolution 129Xe ventilation images were acquired using zigzag sampling in two directions through GRE-zigzag-YZ. 129Xe ventilation defect percent (VDP) was quantified for GRE-zigzag-YZ and bSSFP acquisitions. Relationships and agreement between these VDP measurements were evaluated using Pearson correlation coefficient (r) and Bland-Altman analysis. RESULTS: For 12 HVs, GRE-zigzag-Y and bSSFP required 2.2 s and 10.5 s, respectively, to acquire 129Xe images with a spatial resolution of 3.96 × 3.96 × 10.5 mm3. Structural similarity index, mean absolute error, and Dice similarity coefficient between the two sets of images and ventilated lung regions were 0.85 ± 0.03, 0.0015 ± 0.0001, and 0.91 ± 0.02, respectively. For another 8 HVs and 9 coronavirus disease 2019 subjects, 129Xe images with a nominal spatial resolution of 2.5 × 2.5 × 2.5 mm3 were acquired within 5.5 s per subject using GRE-zigzag-YZ. VDP provided by GRE-zigzag-YZ was strongly correlated (R2 = 0.93, p < 0.0001) with that generated by bSSFP with minimal biases (bias = -0.005%, 95% limit-of-agreement = [-0.414%, 0.424%]). CONCLUSION: Zigzag sampling combined with GRE sequence provides a way for rapid 129Xe ventilation imaging.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a malignant tumor with extremely high mortality. The tumor microenvironment is the "soil" of its occurrence and development, and the inflammatory microenvironment is an important part of the "soil". Bile acid is closely related to the occurrence of HCC. Bile acid metabolism disorder is not only directly involved in the occurrence and development of HCC but also affects the inflammatory microenvironment of HCC. Yinchenhao decoction, a traditional Chinese medicine formula, can regulate bile acid metabolism and may affect the inflammatory microenvironment of HCC. To determine the effect of Yinchenhao decoction on bile acid metabolism in mice with HCC and to explore the possible mechanism by which Yinchenhao decoction improves the inflammatory microenvironment of HCC by regulating bile acid metabolism, we established mice model of orthotopic transplantation of hepatocellular carcinoma. These mice were treated with three doses of Yinchenhao decoction, then liver samples were collected and tested. Yinchenhao decoction can regulate the disorder of bile acid metabolism in liver cancer mice. Besides, it can improve inflammatory reactions, reduce hepatocyte degeneration and necrosis, and even reduce liver weight and the liver index. Taurochenodeoxycholic acid, hyodeoxycholic acid, and taurohyodeoxycholic acid are important molecules in the regulation of the liver inflammatory microenvironment, laying a foundation for the regulation of the liver tumor inflammatory microenvironment based on bile acids. Yinchenhao decoction may improve the inflammatory microenvironment of mice with HCC by ameliorating hepatic bile acid metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Although it is widely acknowledged that long-term exposure to ambient air pollution is closely related to the risk of mortality, there were inconsistencies in terms of cause-specific mortality and it is still unknown whether lifestyle and genetic susceptibility could modify the association. METHODS: This population-based prospective cohort study involved 461,112 participants from the UK Biobank. The land-use regression model was used to estimate the concentrations of particulate matter (PM2.5, PMcoarse, PM10), and nitrogen oxides (NO2 and NOx). The association between air pollution and mortality was evaluated using Cox proportional hazard models. Furthermore, a lifestyle score incorporated with smoking status, physical activity, alcohol consumption, and diet behaviors, and polygenic risk score using 12 genetic variants, were developed to assess the modifying effect of air pollution on mortality outcomes. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 14.0 years, 33,903 deaths were recorded, including 17,083 (2835; 14,248), 6970, 2429, and 1287 deaths due to cancer (lung cancer, non-lung cancer), cardiovascular disease (CVD), respiratory and digestive disease, respectively. Each interquartile range (IQR) increase in PM2.5, NO2 and NOx was associated with 7 %, 6 % and 5 % higher risk of all-cause mortality, respectively. Specifically, for cause-specific mortality, each IQR increase in PM2.5, NO2 and NOx was also linked to mortality due to cancer (lung cancer and non-lung cancer), CVD, respiratory and digestive disease. Furthermore, additive and multiplicative interactions were identified between high ambient air pollution and unhealthy lifestyle on mortality. In addition, associations between air pollution and mortality were modified by lifestyle behaviors. CONCLUSION: Long-term exposure to air pollutants increased the risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality, which was modified by lifestyle behaviors. In addition, we also revealed a synergistically detrimental effect between air pollution and an unhealthy lifestyle, suggesting the significance of joint air pollution management and adherence to a healthy lifestyle on public health.

ABSTRACT

Typhoons and rainstorms (>250 mm/day) are extreme weather events changing hydrological characteristics and thus nitrogen (N) cycle in coastal waters. However, responses of N cycle to rainstorms and typhoons and their underlying mechanisms need to be elucidated. In this study, we conducted an analysis of a comparative dataset encompassing concentrations of nitrate (NO3-), ammonium (NH4+), dissolved oxygen (DO), chlorophyll a (Chl a), hydrological parameters, dual isotopic composition of NO3- (δ15N-NO3- and δ18O-NO3-) in Zhanjiang Bay during three distinct periods: the normal wet season, rainstorm, and typhoon periods. After the rainstorm, the salinity front in Zhanjiang Bay was more weakened and steadier than that during the normal wet season, mainly because onshore wind and a large amount of freshwater was inputted into the ocean surface. This weakened and steady salinity front strengthened water stratification and provided a favorable condition for phytoplankton blooms. Correspondingly, evident NO3- deficits coincided with elevated δ15N-NO3- and δ18O-NO3- values indicated that sufficient NO3- sustained phytoplankton blooms, leading to NO3- assimilation during the rainstorm period. By contrast, due to the onshore wind induced by the typhoon, the salinity front in Zhanjiang Bay was more intensified and unsteady after the typhoon than the normal wet season. The salinity front after the typhoon was unsteady enough to enhance vertical mixing in the water column. Relatively high DO concentrations suggested that enhanced vertical mixing after the typhoon support freshly organic matter decomposition and nitrification via oxygen injection from the air into the water column. In addition, NO3- deficits coincided with elevated δ15N-NO3- values and δ18O-NO3- values demonstrated the coexistence of NO3- assimilation during the typhoon period. This study suggests that the changing processes involved in NO3- cycling after typhoons and rainstorms are associated with the stability and intensity of the salinity front altered by these weather events.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The most common causes of plantar and heel pain are plantar fasciitis and calcaneal spurs, and they often co-exist. Surgery is a recognized treatment for refractory plantar fasciitis. However, few studies have proposed treatment options for patients with metatarsophalangeal fasciitis with bone spurs. Accordingly, this study's purpose was to propose a four-step surgical regimen, and to improve the surgical outcome of plantar fasciitis with osteophytes and to establish a procedure for surgical treatment. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 45 patients suffering from plantar fasciitis with bone spurs from 2020 to 2023. All patients underwent a four-step procedure, including plantar fascia release, calcaneal spur grinding, inflammatory tissue removal, and calcaneal burr decompression. The imaging parameters and functional scores were recorded before and after the operation. The objective evaluation included the measurement of calcaneal spur length on radiographs. Clinical evaluation included the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS), the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and the Foot and Ankle Outcome Scale (FAOS). Measurement data that conformed to normal distribution were expressed as (x2 ± s), and pre-and postoperative AOFAS, FAOS, and VAS scores were compared using repeated-measures ANOVA, and preoperative and postoperative spur lengths were compared using paired t-tests. RESULTS: The 45 patients were followed up for 3 to 30 months, (17.72 ± 8.53) months, at final follow-up, the patient's AOFAS score improved from preoperative (74.93 ± 5.56) to (94.78 ± 3.98), FAOS score increased from preoperative (76.42 ± 3.37) to (96.16 ± 2.74), the VAS score decreased from (3.18 ± 0.54) to (1.07 ± 1.20) (p < 0.05), the length of spur decreased from (0.72 ± 1.81) cm to (0.23 ± 1.19) cm, and there were significant differences before and after operation (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The four-step surgical regimen is an appropriate and effective surgical procedure to treat plantar fasciitis with bone spurs.

AIMS: This study aimed to explore the change trend and group heterogeneity of psychosocial adjustment level and to determine its influencing factors among young and middle-aged patients with first-episode acute myocardial infarction (AMI). METHODS AND RESULTS: The Psychosocial Adjustment Scale of Illness was used to assess the psychosocial adjustment level of the patients at 1, 3, and 6 months after discharge, respectively. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis, generalized estimating equations, and growth mixed models. A total of 233 patients were included, and their psychosocial adjustment scores at the three-time points were 57.18 ± 15.50, 36.17 ± 15.02, and 24.22 ± 12.98, respectively. The trajectories of changes in patients' psychosocial adjustment levels were divided into three latent categories: moderate adjustment improvement group (72.5%), low adjustment improvement group (16.3%), and persistent maladjustment group (11.2%). Among them, predictors of the persistent maladjustment group included no spouse, low monthly family income per capita, normal body mass index, never smoking, never exercising, combined with hyperlipidemia, low social support, submission coping, and high perceived stress. CONCLUSIONS: The psychosocial adjustment level of young and middle-aged patients with first-episode AMI showed an upward trend within 6 months after discharge, and there was group heterogeneity in the change trajectory of psychosocial adjustment level. It is suggested that a multi-center, large-sample longitudinal study should be carried out in the future, and the time of follow-up investigation should be extended to further clarify the change trajectory and influencing factors of psychosocial adjustment of patients with different subtypes, to provide the theoretical basis for formulating targeted intervention programs.

ABSTRACT

Background: Data on the associations of triglyceride (TG) levels with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause mortality mainly focused on the middle-aged or elderly population, with limited information available for younger adults. This study aimed to identify such associations among Chinese young adults. Methods: This study included Chinese adults younger than 40 years free of CVD, cancer, and lipid-lowering agents at baseline in the Kailuan study who were enrolled during 2006 through 2016. All participants were biennially followed up till December 2020. The enzymatic colorimetric method was used to measure baseline fasting TG. Participants were categorized into four groups by quartiles of TG, with the lowest quartile (Q1) as the reference group. The primary outcomes were CVD [composite of myocardial infarction (MI) and ischemic stroke] and all-cause mortality. CVD and mortality risks were estimated with Cox regression models. Results: A total of 43,882 participants were included. Their mean age was 30.6±5.56 years, and 80.2% were males. During a median follow-up of 11.2 years, 298 CVD events and 345 deaths occurred. The incidences of CVD and all-cause mortality were 0.67 and 0.76 per 1,000 person-years, respectively. Compared with individuals in the lowest quartile (Q1), participants in the highest quartile (Q4) showed a 126% higher risk of developing CVD [adjusted hazard ratio (HR) 2.26; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.56 to 3.29; P=0.001] and a 61% higher risk of all-cause mortality (adjusted HR 1.61; 95% CI: 1.14 to 2.28; P=0.007). In addition, analyses of CVD subtypes showed that adjusted HRs (Q4 vs. Q1) were 3.25 (95% CI: 1.33 to 7.97; P=0.01) for MI, and 1.88 (95% CI: 1.16 to 3.04; P=0.01) for ischemic stroke. Conclusions: Among Chinese young adults, elevated fasting TG levels were associated with increased CVD and all-cause mortality risks.

Background: Accumulating small unruptured intracranial aneurysms are detected due to the improved quality and higher frequency of cranial imaging, but treatment remains controversial. While surgery or endovascular treatment is effective for small aneurysms with a high risk of rupture, such interventions are unnecessary for aneurysms with a low risk of rupture. Consequently, it is imperative to accurately identify small aneurysms with a low risk of rupture. The purpose of this study was to develop a clinically practical model to predict small aneurysm ruptures based on a radiomics signature and clinical risk factors. Methods: A total of 293 patients having an aneurysm with a diameter of less than 5 mm, including 199 patients (67.9 %) with a ruptured aneurysm and 94 patients (32.1 %) without a ruptured aneurysm, were included in this study. Digital subtraction angiography or surgical treatment was required in all cases. Data on the clinical risk factors and the features on computed tomography angiography images associated with the aneurysm rupture status were collected simultaneously. We developed a clinical-radiomics model to predict aneurysm rupture status using multivariate logistic regression analysis. The combined clinical-radiomics model was constructed by nomogram analysis. The diagnostic performance, clinical utility, and model calibration were evaluated by operating characteristic curve analysis, decision curve analysis, and calibration analysis. Results: A combined clinical-radiomics model (Area Under Curve [AUC], 0.85; 95 % confidence interval [CI], 0.757-0.947) showed effective performance in the operating characteristic curve analysis. In the validation cohort, the performance of the combined model was better than that of the radiomics model (AUC, 0.75; 95 % CI, 0.645-0.865; Delong's test p-value = 0.01) and the clinical model (AUC, 0.74; 95 % CI, 0.625-0.851; Delong's test p-value <0.01) alone. The results of the decision curve, nomogram, and calibration analyses demonstrated the clinical utility and good fitness of the combined model. Conclusion: Our study demonstrated the effectiveness of a clinical-radiomics model for predicting rupture status in small aneurysms.

ABSTRACT

Effective capture and immobilization of volatile radioiodine from the off-gas of post-treatment plants is crucial for nuclear safety and public health, considering its long half-life, high toxicity, and environmental mobility. Herein, sulfur vacancy-rich Vs-Bi2S3@C nanocomposites were systematically synthesized via a one-step solvothermal vulcanization of CAU-17 precursor. Batch adsorption experiments demonstrated that the as-synthesized materials exhibited superior iodine adsorption capacity (1505.8 mg g-1 at 200 °C), fast equilibrium time (60 min), and high chemisorption ratio (91.7%), which might benefit from the nanowire structure and abundant sulfur vacancies of Bi2S3. Furthermore, Vs-Bi2S3@C composites exhibited excellent iodine capture performance in complex environments (high temperatures, high humidity and radiation exposure). Mechanistic investigations revealed that the I2 capture by fabricated materials primarily involved the chemical adsorption between Bi2S3 and I2 to form BiI3, and the interaction of I2 with electrons provided by sulfur vacancies to form polyiodide anions (I3-). The post-adsorbed iodine samples were successfully immobilized into commercial glass fractions in a stable form (BixOyI), exhibiting a normalized iodine leaching rate of 3.81 × 10-5 g m-2 d-1. Overall, our work offers a novel strategy for the design of adsorbent materials tailed for efficient capture and immobilization of volatile radioiodine.
