ABSTRACT

Personal Care Products (PCPs) have been one of the most studied chemicals in the last twenty years since they were identified as pseudo-persistent pollutants by the European Union in the early 2000s. The accumulation of PCPs in the aquatic environment and their effects on non-target species make it necessary to find new, less harmful, substances. Polyethylene glycol (PEGs) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVAs) are two polymers that have increased their presence in the composition of PCPs in recent years, but little is known about the effect of their accumulation in the environment on non-target species. Through embryotoxicity tests on two common models of aquatic organisms (Danio rerio and Xenopus laevis), this work aims to increase the knowledge of PEGs and PVAs' effects on non-target species. Animals were exposed to the pollutant for 96 h. The main embryotoxicity endpoint (mortality, hatching, malformations, heartbeat rate) was recorded every 24 h. The most significant results were hatching delay in Danio rerio exposed to both chemicals, in malformations (oedema, body malformations, changes in pigmentation and deformations of spine and tail) in D. rerio and X. laevis and significant change in the heartbeat rate (decrease or increase in the rate) in both animals for all chemicals tested.

ABSTRACT

Among personal care products, quaternium-15 is prominently featured as a preservative in items such as shampoos, soaps, shaving products, and cosmetics. The widespread use of these products in people's daily routines contributes to quaternium-15 release into aquatic ecosystems. In this context, the primary aim of the study was to assess the physiological and cellular responses of the digestive gland and gills in Mytilus galloprovincialis to quaternium-15 exposure. Cell viability and the ability of digestive gland cells to regulate their volume were evaluated. Additionally, the expression of the genes involved in oxidative stress response was assessed to further substantiate the compound's harmful effects. Results indicated a significant decrease in both the viability of digestive gland cells and their RVD (regulatory volume decrease) capacity when exposed to a hypotonic solution. Furthermore, impairment of digestive gland cell function was corroborated by the modulation of oxidative stress-related gene expression, including SOD, Cat, as well as Hsp70 and CYP4Y1. Similar gene expression alterations were observed in the gills, reflecting impaired functionality in this vital organ as well. In summary, the outcomes of the study provide conclusive evidence of the toxicity of quaternium-15. This underscores the urgent need to further investigate the toxicological effects of this contaminant on aquatic ecosystems and emphasises the necessity of limiting the use of products containing quaternium-15.

ABSTRACT

Environmental pollution, particularly in the marine environment, has become a significant concern due to the increasing presence of pollutants and their adverse effects on ecosystems and human health. This study focuses on the bioaccumulation of trace elements in the muscle tissue of the blackmouth catshark (Galeus melastomus) from different areas in the Mediterranean Sea. Trace elements are of interest due to their persistence, toxicity, and potential for bioaccumulation. This research aims to assess the distribution and accumulation of trace elements in the muscle tissue of G. melastomus and investigate their potential impact on the deep-sea environment of the Mediterranean. The focused areas include the Ligurian Sea, the northern and central Tyrrhenian Sea, the southern Tyrrhenian Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Pantelleria Waters, and the Gela Waters. Samples were collected following established protocols, and trace element analysis was conducted using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The study provides data on the concentrations of 17 trace elements, namely aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, copper, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, zinc, selenium, strontium, lead, chromium, iron, barium, bismuth, and uranium. The findings contribute to a better understanding of trace element bioaccumulation patterns in elasmobranch species, specifically G. melastomus, and highlight the potential risks associated with chemical contamination in the Mediterranean Sea. This research emphasizes the importance of studying the impacts of pollutants on marine organisms, particularly those occupying key ecological roles, like sharks, to support effective conservation and management strategies.

ABSTRACT

Galeus melastomus is the most common Pentanchidae in the Mediterranean Sea. A scavenger and opportunistic feeder, and despite the wide distribution, little is known about its feeding habits in Italian waters. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the diet of the blackmouth catshark by analysing the stomach contents. The specimens analysed were obtained from five populations of the Tyrrhenian and of the Ionian Seas, collected from a depth between 40 and 700 m. A total of 259 stomachs were analysed. The stomach contents were grouped into macro-categories and identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible. Crustaceans such as Parapenaeus longirostris, the Cephalopods Heteroteuthis dispar and Onychoteuthis banksii, and Osteichthyes, mostly Myctophidae, were identified. Plastic debris was also found among the stomach contents and classified according to its colour and shape. Osteichthyes represent the most abundant item (44%), above all the Myctophidae family, except for the catshark population from Tuscany, in which the most frequent species were Cephalopods, such as Abralia veranyi and Heteroteuthis dispar. Differences in the plastic debris contents were also observed between the Tuscany population and other populations. These could be explained as a probable consequence of the different depths at which the blackmouth catshark populations were sampled.

ABSTRACT

The survey of available scientific literature shows a lack of data on the chronic effects of tebuconazole (TEB) on non-target aquatic organisms. Therefore, this study evaluates toxicity (10 and 20 days) of two considered concentrations 2 ng/L (E1) and 2 µg/L (E2) of TEB to bioindicator species Mytilus galloprovincialis. To this end, the TEB concentrations measured in soft mussel tissues showed a time-dependent increasing trend. The viability of haemocyte and digestive gland (DG) cells was higher than 95 % during the experiment. However, DG cells lost the ability to regulate their volume in both groups after 20-d. The E1 treatment increased Cl- and Na+ levels, and E2 decreased Na+ levels in the haemolymph. In addition, levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and oxidatively modified protein (OMP) increased after 10- and 20-d in both treatments. Histopathological findings showed abnormalities in the E2, e.g., haemocyte infiltration, hypertrophy, and hyperplasia in gills and DG. This study reveals the potential risks of TEB usage in the model organism M. galloprovincialis, primarily via bioaccumulation of TEB in food web links, and improves knowledge about its comprehensive toxicity.

ABSTRACT

The pearl oyster Pinctada imbricata radiata (Leach, 1814), from the Pacific Ocean, was one of the first species to reach via Suez the Mediterranean, colonizing the eastern basin and recently spreading to the western. The species showed to be able to adapt to a wide range of climatic, hydrological, and ecological conditions. Since 2000 it reached the Strait of Messina, where is now infesting the transitional waters of the oriented natural reserve "Laguna di Capo Peloro." Due to such resistance and adaptation ability, various assays were performed. Haemocyte morpho-functional aspects were evaluated in haemolymph samples fixed with 1% and 2% glutaraldehyde for optical and electron microscopy (TEM). The following assays were carried out: cell characterization using several dyes, detection of intra- and extracellular lipids, the capability of phagocytosis using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and to produce superoxide anion (O2- ). Detection of several enzymes, such as acid and alkaline phosphatase, arylsulfatase, chloro-acetylesterase and ß-glucuronidase was also assessed. Cell count was demonstrated to be abundant with a mean of 8.263 × 106 mm2 ± 0.935 × 106 (SD). Two main cell populations were noticed: granulocytes and hyalocytes, both competent for phagocytosis, to produce O2- , and characterized by lipids. Based on the granule analysis, enzymatic activity was also demonstrated. The observations under TEM confirmed all the results obtained. This study supports the hypothesis that P. imbricata radiata can be usefully employed as a model organism in environmental biomonitoring. Moreover, since the species represent potential threats to native species and ecosystems, further insights into its biological adaptations in invaded ecosystems are recommended.

ABSTRACT

Personal care products (PCPs) are part of the large and growing family of emerging contaminants (ECs). Many daily products such as sunscreens, toothpaste, make-up products, perfume, and others, fall under this definition, and their use is increasing exponentially. Furthermore, the degradation of some components of these products is limited. Indeed, they are able to easily reach and accumulate in aquatic systems, representing a new class of contaminants. Moreover, due to their chemical properties, they can interfere at different biological levels, and for this reason, they need to be thoroughly investigated. We have reviewed the literature on PCPs, with a special focus on the adverse effects on the freshwater zebrafish (Danio rerio). The aim of this work is to provide a careful assessment of the toxicity of these compounds, in order to raise awareness for more conscious and responsible use.
