ABSTRACT

Agriculture is an important contributor to global carbon emissions. With the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and China's carbon neutral strategy, accurate estimation of carbon emissions from crop farming is essential to reduce agricultural carbon emissions and promote sustainable food production systems in China. However, previous long-term time series estimates in China have mainly focused on the national and provincial levels, which are insufficient to characterize regional heterogeneity. Here, we selected the county-level administrative district as the basic geographical unit and then generated a county-level dataset on the intensity of carbon emissions from crop farming in China during 2000-2019, using random forest regression with multi-source data. This dataset can be used to delineate spatio-temporal changes in carbon emissions from crop farming in China, providing an important basis for decision makers and researchers to design agricultural carbon reduction strategies in China.

ABSTRACT

Metal-free diradicals based on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are promising candidates for organic spintronics due to their stable magnetism and tunable spin coupling. However, distinguishing and elucidating the origins of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions in these systems remain challenging. Here, we investigate the 2-OS diradical molecule sandwiched between gold electrodes using a combined density functional theory and hierarchical equations of motion approach. We find that the dihedral angle between the radical moieties controls the nature and strength of the intramolecular spin coupling, transitioning smoothly from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic as the angle increases. Distinct features in the inelastic electron tunneling spectra are identified that can discern the two coupling regimes, including spin excitation steps whose energies directly reveal the exchange coupling constant. Mechanical stretching of the junction is predicted to modulate the spectral line shapes by adjusting the hybridization of the molecular radicals with the electrodes. Our work elucidates the electronic origin of tunable spin interactions in 2-OS and provides spectroscopic fingerprints for characterizing magnetism in metal-free diradicals.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Vascular diseases, such as stroke and heart failure (HF), are associated with cognitive decline. Vascular cognitive impairment (CI) is commonly found in patients who had a stroke and with HF, ranging from mild CI to dementia. Early detection of CI is crucial for effective management and rehabilitation. This study aimed to develop the VasCog Screen test, a screening tool to detect CI in patients who had a stroke and with HF. METHOD: 427 patients who had a stroke and with HF were assessed using cognitive measures including Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and a formal neuropsychological battery. The short-MoCA was derived and combined with Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) to create the VasCog Screen. The discriminatory ability of different tests for CI was compared, establishing optimal cut-off points. Variants of short-MoCA including the SDMT were also evaluated. RESULTS: Similar prevalence rates of CI were found in stroke and HF cohorts. The most prevalent neuropsychological impairment was visuomotor speed, followed by visual memory and visuoconstruction. More than half of the patients were found to have CI. The VasCog Screen outperformed MMSE, MoCA and short-MoCA in detecting CI. The addition of SDMT to variants of the short-MoCA increased diagnostic accuracy. CONCLUSION: The VasCog Screen test offers a cognitive screening tool, which is sensitive to cognitive deficits characteristically found in patients who had a stroke and with HF. It was found to have good sensitivity, specificity and classification accuracy. It is easy to administer in busy clinics, enabling early detection of CI and facilitating appropriate interventions.

Background: Nowadays, it is widely acknowledged that mobile phone addiction is a risky factor for insomnia symptoms, but to date, people know little about the underlying relationship between them among undergraduates during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of the present study was to examine the potential association between mobile phone addiction and insomnia, as well as the mediating role of social anxiety and the moderating role of physical activity. Methods: Using the Mobile Phone Addiction Tendency Scale, Social Phobia Inventory, Physical Activity Rating Scale and Insomnia Severity Index, 301 eligible college students in China were investigated. For data analysis, descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, moderating effect test, moderating effect test were carried out in turn. Results: The findings revealed a favorable correlation between mobile phone addiction, social anxiety and insomnia, as well as between social anxiety and insomnia. But physical activity was negatively correlated with social anxiety and mobile phone addiction, and social anxiety partially mediated the relationship between mobile phone addiction and insomnia. Additionally, physical activity played a significant moderating effect between mobile phone addiction and social anxiety. Conclusion: This study advances the knowledge of how mobile phone addiction raises the likelihood of experiencing insomnia symptoms, and also implies that upping physical activity level could lessen the harmful impacts from mobile phone addiction.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The HALP (hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet) score is a novel indicator that measures systemic inflammation and nutritional status that has not been correlated with the risk of post-stroke cognitive impairment in patients with acute ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Methods: Study participants were recruited from 40 stroke centers in China. The HALP score was derived using a weighted sum of hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocytes and platelets, and study participants were categorized into 4 groups of equal sizes based on quartiles cutoffs of the HALP score. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)-Beijing Cognitive Assessment Scale (MoCA-Beijing) was performed at 2 weeks and 12 months following stroke onset. Post-stroke cognitive impairment was considered in patients with MoCA-Beijing≤22. Multiple logistic regression methods were employed to evaluate the relationship between the HALP score and the subsequent risk of developing post-stroke cognitive impairment. Results: The study population comprised 1022 patients (mean age 61.6±11.0 years, 73% men). The proportion of individuals with MoCA-Beijing≤22 at 2 weeks was 49.2% and 32.4% at one year. Patients in the lowest quartile of HALP score (<36.56) were observed to harbor the highest risk of post-stroke cognitive impairment at 12 months post-stroke/TIA compared to those in the highest quartile (odds ratio=1.59, 95% CI=1.07-2.37, p=0.022), and lower domain scores for executive function, naming, and attention. There were no statistically significant differences between patients in the different quartiles of HALP score and HALP score at 2 weeks post-stroke/TIA. Conclusion: The HALP score is a simple score that could stratify the risk of post-stroke cognitive impairment in stroke/TIA patients to facilitate early diagnosis and interventions.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate clinical features, influencing factors and neurobiochemical mechanisms of olfactory dysfunction (OD) in Parkinson disease (PD). Total 39 patients were divided into the PD with OD (PD-OD) and PD with no OD (PD-nOD) groups according to overall olfactory function, including threshold, discrimination and identification, assessed by Sniffin' Sticks test. Motor function and non-motor symptoms were rated by multiple scales. Dopamine, acetylcholine, norepinephrine and 5-hydroxytryptamine levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were measured. We found that the PD-OD group showed significantly lower score of Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale, higher scores of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) Screening Questionnaire and Epworth Sleepiness Scale than the PD-nOD group (p < 0.05). RBD Screening Questionnaire score was independently associated with the scores of overall olfactory function and discrimination (p < 0.05). Dopamine and acetylcholine levels in CSF from the PD-OD group was significantly lower than that from the PD-nOD group (p < 0.05). Dopamine and acetylcholine levels in CSF were significantly and positively correlated with the scores of overall olfactory function, threshold, discrimination and identification in PD patients (p < 0.05). RBD Screening Questionnaire score was significantly and negatively correlated with acetylcholine level in CSF in PD patients with poor olfactory detection (p < 0.05). This investigation reveals that PD-OD is associated with cognitive impairment, probable RBD and excessive daytime sleepiness. PD-OD is correlated with the decreased levels of dopamine and acetylcholine in CSF. RBD is an independent influencing factor of overall olfactory function and discrimination, and the decreased acetylcholine level in CSF may be the common neurobiochemical basis of RBD and OD in PD patients.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Brain atrophy and disrupted functional connectivity are often present in patients with poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI). This study aimed to explore the relationship between remote brain atrophy, connectional diaschisis and cognitive impairment in ischemic stroke patients to provide valuable information about the mechanisms underlying cognitive function recovery. METHODS: Forty first-time stroke patients with basal ganglia infarcts and twenty-nine age-matched healthy people were enrolled. All participants underwent T1-weighted and functional MRI scans, comprehensive cognitive function assessments at baseline, and 3-month follow-up. Brain volumes were calculated, and the atrophic regions were regarded as regions of interest in seed-based functional connectivity analyses. Pearson correlation analysis was used to explore the relationships among cognitive performance, brain atrophy, and functional connectivity alterations. RESULTS: Compared with healthy participants, stroke patients had worse cognitive performance at baseline and the 3-month follow-up. Worse cognitive performance was associated with smaller bilateral thalamus, left hippocampus, and left amygdala volumes, as well as lower functional connectivity between the left thalamus and the left medial superior frontal gyrus, between the right thalamus and the left median cingulate and paracingulate gyri, between the right hippocampus and the left medial superior frontal gyrus, and between the left amygdala and the right dorsolateral superior frontal gyrus. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with basal ganglia infarction, connectional diaschisis between remote brain atrophy and the prefrontal lobe plays a significant role in PSCI. This finding provides new scientific evidence for understanding the mechanisms of PSCI and indicates that the prefrontal lobe may be a target to improve cognitive function after stroke.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Stroke is a major cause of death and disability worldwide, and it often results in depression, anxiety, stress, and cognitive impairment in survivors. There is a lack of community-based cognitive interventions for stroke survivors. This pilot single trial aimed to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and perceived effectiveness of a community-based cognitive intervention program called Train-Your-Brain (TYB) for stroke survivors and caregivers. The study focused on improvements in emotional and psychological well-being, as well as cognitive functioning. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used in this study. A total of 48 participants were recruited and assessed using Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale - 21 items (DASS-21), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Symbol Digits Modality Test (SDMT) before and after the intervention. The TYB program consisted of nine sessions and was conducted via the Zoom software application. Participants provided feedback on the program, highlighting areas for improvement. Results: Twenty-seven stroke survivors and 21 caregivers completed the program. Participants expressed high satisfaction with the TYB program but recommended avoiding assessments in December and customizing the program for stroke survivors and caregivers. Stroke survivors showed significant improvements in depression and stress scores, while caregivers experienced no significant improvements after the program. While there was a slight improvement in stroke survivors' cognitive scores after the program, it was not statistically significant. Caregivers, however, experienced a significant decline in cognitive scores. Discussion: The TYB program provided group support and validation, resulting in improved mood and reduced stress among stroke survivors. Cultural collectivism played a significant role in fostering group cohesion. However, the program's limited focus on caregivers and timing of assessments during the December holidays may have affected the outcomes. The TYB program demonstrated feasibility and potential effectiveness in alleviating psychological distress and enhancing cognitive function among stroke survivors. Future research should explore long-term effects, larger sample sizes, and non-English-speaking populations to enhance generalizability. Tailored interventions for caregivers are necessary.

Objective: Cognitive impairment after stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA) has a high prevalence. Cystatin C (CysC) has been found as a novel biomarker of neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease. We aimed to explore the possible correlations of serum CysC level with cognitive impairment in patients who had mild ischemic stroke and TIA after 1 year. Methods: We measured serum CysC level in 1025 participants with a minor ischemic stroke/TIA from enrolled from the Impairment of Cognition and Sleep (ICONS) study of the China National Stroke Registry-3 (CNSR-3). They were divided into four groups according to quartiles of baseline CysC levels. Patients' cognitive functions were assessed by Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)-Beijing at day 14 and at 1 year. Multiple logistic regression models were performed to evaluate the relationship between CysC and post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) at 1-year follow-up. Results: Cognitive impairment was defined as MoCA-Beijing ≤22. Most patients were in 60s (61.52±10.97 years old) with a median (interquartile range) National Institute of Health Stroke Scale(NIHSS) score of 3.00 (4.00) and greater than primary school level of education, and 743 participants (72.49%) were male. Among the 1025 participants, 331 participants (32.29%) patients suffered PSCI at 1-year follow-up. A U-shaped association was observed between CysC and 1-year PSCI [quartile (Q)1 vs Q3: adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 2.69, 95% CI 1.67-4.34, p < 0.0001; Q2 vs Q3: aOR 1.63, 95% CI 1.03-2.57, p = 0.0354; Q4 vs Q3: aOR 1.83, 95% CI 1.16-2.87, p = 0.009]. Moreover, the U-shaped trends were also found between CysC level and the subscores of attention, recall, abstraction and language in MoCA. Conclusion: CysC showed a U-shaped correlation with 1-year overall cognitive function. It is probable that measurement of the serum CysC level would aid in the early diagnosis of PSCI.

BACKGROUND: Understanding nutritional status among women of childbearing age (WCA) is of increasing concern, as nutrient intakes may affect the health of WCA and well-being of their offspring. This study aimed to investigate secular trends of dietary energy and macronutrients intakes and access longitudinally the urban-rural and geographic disparities among Chinese WCA. METHODS: A total of 10,219 participants were involved in three rounds of the Chinese Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS:1991, 2004, and 2015). Average macronutrients intakes were compared against the Chinese Dietary Reference Intakes Standard (DRIs) to better assess adequacy. Mixed effect models were used to estimate the secular trends of dietary intake. RESULTS: A total of 10,219 participants were involved. Dietary fat, the percentage of energy (%E) from fat, and the proportion with more than 30% of energy from fat and less than 50% from carbohydrates increased notably over time (p < 0.001). In 2015, urban western WCA had the most dietary fat (89.5 g/d), %E from fat (41.4%), with the highest proportion of energy from fat (81.7%) and carbohydrate (72.1%) out the range of DRIs. From 1991 to 2015, the average urban-rural differences in dietary fat decreased from 15.7 g/d to 3.2 g/d among eastern WCA. However, it increased to 16.4 g/d and 6.3 g/d among central and western WCA, respectively. CONCLUSION: WCA was experiencing a rapid transformation to a high-fat diet. Temporal variation with obvious urban-rural and geographic disparities in dietary. energy and macronutrient composition persistently existed among Chinese WCA.These findings have implications of future public strategies to strengthen the nutrition propaganda and education of balanced diet for WCA to help them to improve their nutritional status, especially for those living in western China.

Introduction: Stroke has been considered to raise the risk of dementia in several studies, but the relationship between brain structural changes and poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) is unclear. Methods: In this study, 23 PSCI patients with basal ganglia infarcts after 2 weeks and 29 age-matched controls underwent magnetic resonance imaging measuring cortical thickness and volume changes, as well as neuropsychological tests. CI was derived from a performance score <1.5 standard deviations for normally distributed scores. We compared Z scores in different cognitive domains and cortical thickness and volumes in two groups. Multiple linear regressions were used to investigate the relationship between cortical thickness and volumes and neuropsychological tests. Results: A majority of PSCI patients were in their 50s (55.19±8.52 years). PSCI patients exhibited significantly decreased Z scores in multiple domains, such as memory, language, visuomotor speed, and attention/executive function. The volumes of the middle posterior corpus callosum, middle anterior corpus callosum, and hippocampus in PSCI patients were markedly lower than controls. The thickness of the right inferior temporal cortex and insula were significantly smaller than controls. It found that the reduced right hippocampus was related to executive dysfunction. Hippocampus dysfunction may be involved in language impairment (p<0.05) in PSCI patients with basal ganglia infarcts. Conclusion: These findings demonstrated that brain structure changed after ischemic stroke, and different gray-matter structural changes could lead to specific cognitive decline in PSCI patients with basal ganglia infarcts. Atrophy of the right hippocampus potentially serves as an imaging marker of early executive function of PSCI.

Phytoremediation technology is an effective method to remove formaldehyde indoors, but the purification capacity and physiological response of plants to formaldehyde under the simultaneous influence of light and CO2 have not been examined in previous studies. In this study, formaldehyde fumigation experiments were conducted on the C3 plants Epipremnum aureum A. and Chlorophytum comosum L., and the crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) plant Dieffenbachia maculate A. The phytoremediation performance and physiological response of plants were studied. The initial concentration of formaldehyde was established at 11.950 ± 1.442 [Formula: see text]; the light intensities were 448 ± 7 [Formula: see text], 1628 ± 22 [Formula: see text], and 3259 ± 22 [Formula: see text], respectively; and the concentrations of CO2 were 455 ± 29 [Formula: see text], 978 ± 50 [Formula: see text], 2020 ± 66 [Formula: see text], and 3006 ± 95 [Formula: see text], respectively. The results indicated that the highest purification rates of formaldehyde by E. aureum, D. maculata, and C. comosum were 55.8%, 43.7%, and 53.2%, respectively. The light intensity had a positive effect on the formaldehyde purification rates of all three plants and positively stimulated peroxidase (POD) activity, while the CO2 concentration had no significant impact on the formaldehyde purification capacity and plants' physiological characteristics. Exposure to formaldehyde inhibited formaldehyde dehydrogenase (FADH) activity and positively stimulated catalase (CAT) activity. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity positively correlated with the formaldehyde purification capacity of plants.

Sustainable development goals (SDGs) in the United Nations 2030 Agenda call for action by all nations to promote economic prosperity while protecting the planet. Projection of future land-use change under SDG scenarios is a new attempt to scientifically achieve the SDGs. Herein, we proposed four scenario assumptions based on the SDGs, including the sustainable economy (ECO), sustainable grain (GRA), sustainable environment (ENV), and reference (REF) scenarios. We forecasted land-use change along the Silk Road (resolution: 300 m) and compared the impacts of urban expansion and forest conversion on terrestrial carbon pools. There were significant differences in future land use change and carbon stocks, under the four SDG scenarios, by 2030. In the ENV scenario, the trend of decreasing forest land was mitigated, and forest carbon stocks in China increased by approximately 0.60% compared to 2020. In the GRA scenario, the decreasing rate of cultivated land area has slowed down. Cultivated land area in South and Southeast Asia only shows an increasing trend in the GRA scenario, while it shows a decreasing trend in other SDG scenarios. The ECO scenario showed highest carbon losses associated with increased urban expansion. The study enhances our understanding of how SDGs can contribute to mitigate future environmental degradation via accurate simulations that can be applied on a global scale.

ABSTRACT

Recent technological advancement in scanning tunneling microscopes has enabled the measurement of spin-field and spin-spin interactions in single atomic or molecular junctions with an unprecedentedly high resolution. Theoretically, although the fermionic hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) method has been widely applied to investigate the strongly correlated Kondo states in these junctions, the existence of low-energy spin excitations presents new challenges to numerical simulations. These include the quest for a more accurate and efficient decomposition for the non-Markovian memory of low-temperature environments and a more careful handling of errors caused by the truncation of the hierarchy. In this work, we propose several new algorithms, which significantly enhance the performance of the HEOM method, as exemplified by the calculations on systems involving various types of low-energy spin excitations. Being able to characterize both the Kondo effect and spin excitation accurately, the HEOM method offers a sophisticated and versatile theoretical tool, which is valuable for the understanding and even prediction of the fascinating quantum phenomena explored in cutting-edge experiments.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients with post stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) frequently show changes in brain functional connectivity (FC). However, the underlying neurobiological mechanism of PSCI remains unclear. This study first applied degree centrality (DC) analysis to investigate the intrinsic dysconnectivity pattern of the brain in PSCI patients, as well as to explore the relationship between these changes and cognitive function. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scanning was performed on all participants, including those with PSCI (n = 20), stroke with no cognitive impairment (NPSCI, n = 15), and healthy controls (HC, n = 29). DC values were used to identify differences in FC among the three groups. The relationship between abnormal DC values and cognitive function was examined. RESULTS: PSCI and NPSCI had significantly higher DC values in the right parahippocampal gyrus (PhG) in comparison with HC (p<0.05). In addition, DC values of the right PhG showed a negative correlation with MoCA scores (r =  - 0.405, p = 0.001), the Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT; r =  - 0.278, p = 0.026), Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test-Delayed Recall (RCFT-DR; r =  - 0.250, p = 0.046), Symbol Digit Modality Test (SDMT; r =  - 0.385, p = 0.002), Boston Naming Test (BNT; r =  - 0.402, p = 0.001) and Animal Fluency Test (AFT; r =  - 0.395, p = 0.001). However, DC was significantly positively correlated with the Trail Making Test (TMT-A; r = 0.347, p = 0.005) and TMT-B (r = 0.294, p = 0.019). CONCLUSIONS: DC values were increased in the right PhG following a mild subcortical stroke. DC values in the PhG were negatively correlated with cognitive function, which may indicate brain nodes reorganization.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Smartphone addiction, as a key topic in the current field of behavioral addictions and public health, has brought many negative impacts on the physical, psychological, interpersonal communication, and even academic performance among contemporary college students. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to offer ideas for solving smartphone addiction among college students through investigating the potential mediating effect of self-esteem in the relationship between physical activity and smartphone addiction. Methods: By the quota sampling, a cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate 650 college students from 10 colleges in Guangzhou Higher Mega Center, and several self-reported instruments including physical activity rating scale-3 (PARS-3), mobile phone addiction tendency scale (MPATS), self-esteem scale (SES) were used to collect the related data needed for the present study. The descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, hierarchical regression analysis, and mediating effect analysis in this study were performed in turn. Results: The results showed that physical activity (r = -0.124, p < 0.01) and self-esteem (r = -0.360, p < 0.01) were all negatively correlated with smartphone addiction, and both could also significantly and negatively predict smartphone addiction. There was a positive correlation between physical activity and self-esteem (r = 0.084, p < 0.05), and self-esteem could be significantly predicted by physical activity. And more important, the relationship between physical activity and smartphone addiction could be partially mediated by self-esteem, and the indirect effect value was -0.346 (95% Boot CI = -0.695; -0.023), along with the mediating effect accounted for 24% of the total effect between physical activity and smartphone addiction. Conclusion: The current study shows that physical activity could not only directly reduce smartphone addiction, but also decrease smartphone addiction by indirectly improving self-esteem, which is important in practice for solving this troublesome issue and then gradually developing a healthy behavior in daily life for college students in China, and even across the world in near future.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Minor stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) usually have mild and nondisabling symptoms, and these functional deficits may recover fully e.g., TIA, however, part of them still suffer from cognitive impairment and poor outcomes. We conducted a study to determine the relationship between cognition evaluated by Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and poor functional outcomes assessed by the Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) (mRS ≥ 2) and Stroke Impact Scale (SIS)-16(SIS-16<25%). METHODS: The data of this study come from the impairment of cognition and Sleep (ICONS) after acute ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack in Chinese patients study. A total of 1675 minor stroke patients and TIA patients were finally recruited. Patients' cognition were evaluated by Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scale at 2-week (2w), 3 months (3 m) and 1 year(1y). Cognitive impairment (CI) was defined as MoCA score ≤ 22. According to MoCA score, patients were divided into 4 groups: no PSCI group: with MoCA-2w>22 and MoCA-3 m>22; improved PSCI group: with MoCA-2w ≤ 2 and MoCA-3 m>22;delayed PSCI group: MoCA-2w>22 and MoCA-3 m ≤ 22; persisting PSCI group: with MoCA-2w ≤ 22 and MoCA-3 m ≤ 22. RESULTS: A total of 1675 stroke patients were recruited in this study. There were 818 patients (48.84%) who had PSCI at baseline. Of these, 123 patients (15%) had mRS ≥2 at 3 months. The persisting PSCI group was a significant predictor of functional dependence at 3 months and 1 year after stroke and when adjusted for covariates such as gender, age, history of stroke, depression and intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis, stroke subtype and acute infarction type. CONCLUSION: Persisting PSCI increased the risk of poor functional outcome after 3 months and 1 year follow-up. These high-risk individuals should be identified for targeted rehabilitation and counseling to improve longer-term post-stroke outcome.

ABSTRACT

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been utilized to realize the precise measurement and control of local spin states. Experiments have demonstrated that when a nickelocene (Nc) molecule is attached to the apex of an STM tip, the dI/dV spectra exhibit a sharp or a smooth transition when the tip is displaced toward the substrate. However, what leads to the two distinct types of transitions remains unclear, and more intriguingly, the physical origin of the abrupt change in the line shape of dI/dV spectra remains unclear. To clarify these intriguing issues, we perform first-principles-based simulations on the STM tip control process for the Cu tip/Nc/Cu(100) junction. In particular, we find that the suddenly enhanced hybridization between the d orbitals on the Ni ion and the metallic bands in the substrate leads to Kondo correlation overwhelming spin excitation, which is the main cause of the sharp transition in the dI/dV spectra observed experimentally.

Water consumption and energy consumption are inevitable in grain production, but few studies have focused on the integrated assessment of these two indicators and their relationships. To address the research deficiency, taking the North China Plain (NCP) as a case study, this paper quantifies the changes in grain crop planting structure and the accompanying changes in irrigation water consumption (IWC) and energy consumption (EC) in the NCP. On this basis, the water-energy coupling index (CI) is constructed to analyze the water-energy coupling relationship in the context of grain crop planting structure change. The results revealed that the sown area of three of the four main grain crops in the NCP, namely winter wheat, summer maize, and rice, roughly increased in the south and decreased in the north, while the sown area of spring maize increased in most counties where it was planted in the NCP from 2000 to 2015. With the change of grain crop planting structure, IWC and EC of winter wheat in the NCP decreased by 19.87 × 106 m3 and 16.78 × 108 MJ, respectively, mainly distributed in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, while IWC and EC of other crops all increased. In terms of CI values, although that of spring maize increased, those of winter wheat, summer maize, and rice all decreased, and the overall CI values of grain production in the NCP decreased from 0.442 in 2000 to 0.438 in 2015, indicating that grain crop distribution has been optimized toward a less water- and energy-intensive and more sustainable layout in the NCP. This paper can add case and methodological support to the food-water-energy (FEW) nexus research and can also provide policy suggestions for regional crop optimization layout and conservation of both water and energy resources.
