ABSTRACT

Tallitroides topitotum (Burt, 1934) (Talitridae) is one of the representatives of Amphipoda that has adapted to terrestrial environment. This research aimed to describe the population structure of this talitrid in the morphometric and reproductive aspects. The study was carried out in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, from June 2020 to May 2021. The talitrids were monthly collected with pitfalls exposed for 48 hours and they were sexed, photographed, and measured (body length, cephalic length, and marsupium length ­ in millimeters). Ovigerous females had their eggs counted and measured. In addition, we correlated the size data and the sampling latitudes of T. topitotum from previous and present studies. A total of 492 individuals were collected, from which 62 were ovigerous females, 188 non-ovigerous females, and 242 juveniles. No male was sampled. There was a significant correlation between body and head lengths and body and marsupium lengths in ovigerous females. We found no correlation between morphometric data and female fertility. Although not significant, there was a positive correlation between the size of talitrids and the latitude of occurrence. Body size can be inferred from head size, and marsupium size from body size, as both are strongly correlated. The absence of relationship between body size and fecundity may be related to environmental factors that can affect the talitrid reproduction. A clear relationship between the mean body size of T. topitotum and the latitude of their occurrence can be obtained with more studies conducted with a large sampling.


Talitroides topitotum (Burt, 1934) (Talitridae) é um dos representantes de Amphipoda que se adaptaram ao ambiente terrestre. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a estrutura populacional deste talitrídeo e correlacionar entre si dados morfométricos e aspectos reprodutivos da população. O estudo foi realizado na região central do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, entre junho de 2020 e maio de 2021. Para tal, foram coletados mensalmente espécimes com o auxílio de armadilhas de queda (pitfalls), que ficaram expostos durante 48 horas no campo. Os animais foram sexados, fotografados e medidos (comprimento corporal, comprimento cefálico e comprimento do marsúpio ­ em milímetros). As fêmeas ovígeras tiveram todos os seus ovos contados e medidos. Além disso, foram comparados os tamanhos máximos e latitudes de estudos populacionais realizados com a espécie. No total foram coletados 492 indivíduos, dos quais 62 eram fêmeas ovígeras, 188 não-ovígeras e 242 juvenis. Nenhum macho foi amostrado. Houve correlação significativa entre o comprimento corporal e cefálico e o comprimento corporal e de marsúpio nas fêmeas ovígeras. Não houve correlação entre os dados morfométricos e a fecundidade das fêmeas. Na análise de correlação entre tamanho dos talitrídeos e latitude houve correlação positiva, embora não significativa. O tamanho corporal pode ser inferido a partir do tamanho cefálico, bem como o do marsúpio a partir do corporal, pois ambos estão fortemente correlacionados. O fato de não haver relação entre tamanho e fecundidade pode estar relacionado a fatores ambientais, já que os mesmos podem afetar a reprodução do grupo. No que diz respeito à relação entre tamanho e latitude, mais estudos devem ser conduzidos com uma amostra maior, a fim de que seja verificada se a relação é significativa ou não.

ABSTRACT

A new species, Hyalella tepehuana sp. nov., is described from Durango state, Mexico, a region where studies on Hyalella have been few. This species differs from most species of the North and South American genus Hyalella in the number of setae on the inner plate of maxilla 1 and maxilla 2, characters it shares with Hyalella faxoni Stebbing, 1903. Nevertheless, H. faxoni, from the Volcan Barva in Costa Rica, lacks a dorsal process on pereionites 1 and 2. Also, this new species differs from other described Hyalella species in Mexico by the shape of the palp on maxilla 1, the number of setae on the uropods, and the shape of the telson.

ABSTRACT

Analysis of the transcriptome of organisms exposed to toxicants offers new insights for ecotoxicology, but further research is needed to enhance interpretation of results and effectively incorporate them into useful environmental risk assessments. Factors that must be clarified to improve use of transcriptomics include assessment of the effect of organism sex within the context of toxicant exposure. Amphipods are well recognized as model organisms for toxicity evaluation because of their sensitivity and amenability to laboratory conditions. To investigate whether response to metals in crustaceans differs according to sex we analyzed the amphipod Parhyale hawaiensis after exposure to AgCl and Ag nanoparticles (AgNP) via contaminated food. Gene specific analysis and whole genome transcriptional profile of male and female organisms were performed by both RT-qPCR and RNA-seq. We observed that expression of transcripts of genes glutathione transferase (GST) did not differ among AgCl and AgNP treatments. Significant differences between males and females were observed after exposure to AgCl and AgNP. Males presented twice the number of differentially expressed genes in comparison to females, and more differentially expressed were observed after exposure to AgNP than AgCl treatments in both sexes. The genes that had the greatest change in expression relative to control were those genes related to peptidase and catalytic activity and chitin and carbohydrate metabolic processes. Our study is the first to demonstrate sex specific differences in the transcriptomes of amphipods upon exposure to toxicants and emphasizes the importance of considering gender in ecotoxicology.

ABSTRACT

The Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon (RFL - Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil) is a highly polluted and eutrophic lacustrine system, which has been often used for the practice of aquatic sports, including during the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. This study proposes the evaluation of metal concentrations in surface sediments from the RFL before and after urban interventions performed for the 2016 Olympics, as well as their toxicity to the benthic amphipod Tiburonella viscana and embryos of the sea-urchin Echinometra lucunter. Metal concentrations determined in 2017 were significantly higher than those obtained in 2015 (especially Cu, Cd and Ni), suggesting that the interventions performed to fulfill the requirements of the Olympics increased metal contents in sediments. The sediments from the northern sector of the RFL were muddier, more organically enriched, exhibited higher metal concentrations and were more toxic to T. viscana when compared to the sediments collected in the southern sector. This fact is particularly important since the practice of sports, including during the 2016 Olympics, has been preferably performed in the northern sector. Metal distribution was strongly correlated with organic matter and mud contents. The toxicity to E. lucunter embryos was high for both northern and southern sediments; most of the samples led to 100% lack or abnormal embryonic development. The integration of physical, chemical and ecotoxicological data indicates that the mortality to T. viscana was correlated with metal contents, whereas the toxicity to E. lucunter was apparently related to the release of ammonia from the sediment to water column. Finally, high metal concentrations and the toxicity to aquatic organisms evidence the ecological risks to the biota from RFL.

ABSTRACT

En el presente trabajo se reportan las especies de anfípodos bentónicos de los subórdenes Amphilochidea y Senticaudata de la Plataforma Continental Centro Norte del Perú (03°24'S - 79°30'W a 09°00'S - 81°30'W) colectadas durante la estación de otoño. A partir de 136 puntos de muestreo, distribuidas en entre 22 y 372 m, se determinaron 28 taxa de anfípodos, pertenecientes a 15 familias; 14 especies consideradas como nuevos registros para el mar peruano. La familia Ampeliscidae fue la más diversa, con 11 especies. Se incluye información taxonómica descriptiva y distribución geográfica referenciada.


In this work, amphipod species of the suborder Amphilochidea and Senticaudata from the North-Central Continental Platform of Peru (03°24'S - 79°30'W to 09°00'S - 81°30'W) are reported. 136 stations were sampled, range between 22 to 372 m in depth, all collections were during the autumn. We determined 28 species, belonging to 15 families. Ampeliscidae family was the most diverse with eleven (11) species. Of the total of species, 14 species are new records to Peruvian sea. Indeed, this research includes descriptive taxonomic information and referenced geographical distribution.

ABSTRACT

Chemical and toxicological crude oil analysis was performed on water-accommodated fraction of oil (WAF). This study characterized the chemical composition of WAF and its dissipation over a period of 192 h. Acute (96 h) and chronic (14 d) toxicity of WAF were evaluated on Hyalella curvispina from both reference (Los Barreales lake, LB) and hydrocarbon-contaminated (Durán stream, DS) sites. The total hydrocarbon (TPHs) concentration in WAF was 2.18 mg L-1. The dissipation rates of hydrocarbons in WAF showed a first-order kinetics, with half-lives ranging between 65 h-200 h. Amphipods from LB showed acute and chronic LC50 values of 0.33 and 0.018 mg L-1, respectively. Amphipods from DS exposed to pure WAF showed no mortality in either acute or chronic assays. Further biochemical and molecular research is required to determine the mechanisms underlying the resistance to WAF exposure on DS amphipods.

RESUMEN El anfípodo terrestre, Talitroides topitotum, es un talítrido distribuido mundialmente en regiones subtropicales y templadas, con un amplio rango de distribución altitudinal, temperatura y humedad. Se colectaron y procesaron especímenes desde el año 2012 al 2016, mediante remoción-filtración de sustratos húmedos. Se identificaron taxonómicamente por características fenotípicas diagnósticas, se determinó su estado de desarrollo y se separaron por sexo. Se extrajo ADN de anfípodos completos, seguido de una PCR de los genes citocromo oxidasa subunidad 1 y del ARN ribosomal de la subunidad 16S. Se obtuvo un árbol filogenético por máxima verosimilitud con un modelo GTR-GAMMA. El análisis de la distribución potencial de T. topitotum se estimó utilizando 19 variables bioclimáticas. En este estudio, se amplía la distribución previamente reportada y en altitudes entre los 1900 a 595 m s.n.m. Se analizaron 39 localidades, en las cuales: 1) Hay presencia de T. topitotum, 2) no hubo presencia de anfípodos terrestres, 3) no hubo presencia de Talitroides sp., pero sí de un anfípodo nativo. La abundancia proporcional de T. topitotum se inclina hacia las hembras adultas, una proporción alta de juveniles y no se detectaron individuos machos. El análisis bioinformático determinó el posicionamiento taxonómico de la especie T. topitotum dentro del agrupamiento de anfípodos terrestres, además, la especie exógena diverge de Cerrorchestia hyloraina demostrando una separación filogenética entre especies, las cuales pueden estar compartiendo hábitats. T. topitotum, según el modelo de máxima entropía, posee una alta capacidad de dispersión y estaría siendo favorecida, en cuanto a su asentamiento y propagación, por elementos climáticos como temperatura, precipitación y humedad, y factores como la altitud. Nuestros hallazgos son relevantes para la toma de decisiones de manejo y monitoreo del desplazamiento de especies nativas de anfípodos terrestres en la región.


ABSTRACT The land-hopper, Talitroides topitotum, is a talitrid amphipod distributed worldwide in subtropical and template regions, with a wide range of altitudinal distribution, temperature and humidity. Specimens were collected and processed since 2012 until 2016, by collection-filtration of wet substrates. Specimens were taxonomically identified using diagnostic phenotypic characteristics, and the developmental stage and sex were recorded. DNA was extracted from whole amphipods, followed by PCR of cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 and ribosomal RNA subunit 16S genes. Partial genetic sequences were obtained and a maximum-likelihood phylogenetic tree was calculated based on a GTR-GAMMA model. The analysis of potential distribution of T. topitotum was estimated using 19 bioclimatic variables. This study extends the previously reported distribution and elevations between 1900 and 595 m a.s.l. Thirty-nine localities were analyzed, where the following categories were registered: 1) T. topitotum is present, 2) terrestrial amphipods are not present, 3) T. topitotum is not present, but the native amphipod is present. The relative abundance of T. topitotum corresponds to adult females, a high proportion ofjuveniles and no males were collected. The bioinformatic analysis established the taxonomic position of T. topitotum within a group of terrestrial amphipods; moreover, the invasive species diverges of Cerrorchestia hyloraina, demonstrating the phylogenetic separation between these species that could be sharing habitats. Based on the model of maximum entropy, T. topitotum shows a high dispersion capacity and its establishment and propagation are been improved by climatic elements such as temperature, precipitation, humidity, and elevation. Our findings are relevant for management policies and monitoring the distribution of native species of terrestrial amphipods in the region.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the biological hazard of a pharmaceutical effluent before and after treatment. For the former, the determined 96h-LC50 value was 1.2%. The photo-Fenton treatment catalyzed with an iron-pillared clay reduced this parameter by 341.7%. Statistically significant increases with respect to the control group (P<0.05) were observed at 12, 24, 48 and 72h in HPC (50.2, 30.4, 66.9 and 43.3%), LPX (22, 83.2, 62.7 and 59.5%) and PCC (14.6, 23.6, 24.4 and 25.6%) and antioxidant enzymes SOD (29.4, 38.5, 32.7 and 49.5%) and CAT (48.4, 50.3, 38.8 and 46.1%) in Hyalella azteca before treatment. Also increases in damage index were observed before treatment of 53.1, 59.9, 66.6 and 72.1% at 12, 24, 48 and 72h, respectively. After treatment the same biomarkers of oxidative stress decreased with respect to before treatment being to HPC (29.3, 22.5, 41.6 and 31.7%); LPX (14.2, 43.1, 30.7 and 35.5%); PCC (12.6, 21.3, 24.2 and 23.9%); SOD (39.2, 33.9, 49.5 and 37.9%) and CAT (28.6, 35.8, 33.7 and 31.7) at 12, 24, 48 and 72h, respectively (P<0.05). The damage index were decreased at 12, 24, 48 and 72h in 48.9, 57.8, 67.3 and 72.1%, respectively. In conclusion, the obtained results demonstrate the need of performing bioassays in order to characterize an effluent before discharge and not base such a decision only upon current normativity. In addition, it was also concluded that the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process decreases the presence of PCT, oxidative stress, genotoxic damage and LC50 in Hyalella azteca.

ABSTRACT

Production in the pharmaceutical industry has increased and along with it, the amount of wastewater of various characteristics and contaminant concentrations. The main chemicals in these effluents are solvents, detergents, disinfectants-such as sodium hypochlorite (NaClO)-and pharmaceutical products, all of which are potentially ecotoxic. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the oxidative stress induced in the amphipod Hyalella azteca by the effluent from a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-manufacturing plant. The median lethal concentration (72 h-LC50) was determined and H. azteca were exposed to the lowest observed adverse effect level (0.0732 %) for 12, 24, 48 and 72 h, and biomarkers of oxidative stress were evaluated [hydroperoxide content (HPC), lipid peroxidation (LPX), protein carbonyl content (PCC), and the activity of the superoxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx)]. Statistically significant increases with respect to the control group (P < 0.05) were observed in HPC, LPX and PCC in H. azteca at all exposure times. Antioxidant enzymes activity SOD, CAT and GPx activity also increased significantly (P < 0.05) with respect to the control group. In conclusion, the industrial effluent analyzed in the present study contains NSAIDs and NaClO, and induces oxidative stress in H. azteca.

ABSTRACT

Amphipods are widely used as bioindicator organisms, in view of their ease of collection and cultivation, sexual dimorphism and abundance, in aquatic environments. In the present study male (n=30) and female (n=30) amphipod Hyalella kaingang were collected during the middle of each season from a nature preserve (Research Center PRÓ-MATA) in São Francisco de Paula, Southern Brazil. Proteins, glycogen, lipids, triglycerides, glycerol, and lipid peroxidation (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione S-transferase activity) were measured. The results obtained for the markers of energy metabolism, antioxidant enzymes, and lipid peroxidation revealed a clear seasonal variation. The patterns of proteins, glycerol, and glutathione S-transferase activity did not differ between sexes; conversely, differential responses in males and females over the year were observed for all other parameters (glycogen, lipids, triglycerides, lipid peroxidation, and superoxide dismutase and catalase activity). These responses appear to be strongly influenced by a prolonged reproductive period (autumn through spring, peaking in autumn); by the degree of exploratory activity, particularly in the summer and autumn; and by abiotic factors, such as temperature and photoperiod. The responses observed in the summer and autumn (decrease in levels of proteins, glycogen and fats, and increase in lipid peroxidation levels and glutathione S-transferase activity), suggest that this season represents a critical time point for these animals. The parameters studied herein may be used as biomarkers to assess the environmental conditions in the aquatic habitat.

A new amphipod species of Metharpinia Schellenberg, 1931 is described from Campos Basin, southeastern Brazilian coast. The material was collected with van Veen grab from unconsolidated substratum, off the mouth of the Paraíba do Sul River. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by presenting a strongly constricted rostrum and a slender palp of maxilla 1. There are four species in Metharpinia from the South Atlantic: M. dentiurosoma Alonso de Pina, 2003, M. grandirama Alonso de Pina, 2003 and M. iado Alonso de Pina, 2003, and Metharpinia taylorae sp. nov. This is the first record of a species of the genus from Brazilian waters.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate the environmental quality of the marine portion of Xixová-Japuí State Park (XJSP), an urban marine protected area, which is influenced by multiple contamination sources, by using ecotoxicological and geochemical analyses. Sediments were predominantly sandy, with low CaCO3 and organic matter contents, and presented contamination by metals (Cd,Cu,Zn). Acute toxicity was detected in three tested samples, and copepod exposed to sediments from four stations exhibited lower fecundities, despite the absence of significant effects. Contamination and toxicity seemed to be associated, suggesting that the environment is degraded and presents risks to the biota. Whole sediment TIE indicated ammonia as a main responsible for toxicity, suggesting sewage is a main contributor to sediment degradation. As external contamination sources seem to be negatively influencing the sediment quality, the park conservation objectives are not being fully reached, demanding actions to mitigate impacts.

Talitroides topitotum (Amphipoda) foi introduzido no Brasil pelas atividades de silvicultura. Atualmente a espécie está distribuída nos Estados do Paraná, Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo. Este trabalho descreve a ocorrência desta espécie no Estado do Espírito Santo. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a interferência do efeito de borda na estruturada comunidade de macroinvertebrados associados ao folhiço, onde um espécime fêmea de T. topitotum foi observado em cultivo de café em março de 2008.

Bogidiella totakura sp. nov. differs from all the other species in the group mainly by the shape, size and ornamentation on gnathopods and telson. This is the second Indian species of Bogidiella.

Lipids in the amphipod Talorchestia margaritae (Amphipoda: Talitridae) and its relationship with the ecology of the species. T. margaritae, an endemic species inhabiting Venezuelan coasts, plays an important ecological role in plant and animal decomposition. To understand this issue in some animal groups, especially small ones, lipid composition analysis has been an interesting tool to describe their trophic relationships and food preferences. In order to assess this and visualize the components of their diet, we determined the lipid composition differences between males and females and among age classes in this species. Two sandy beaches were selected: Mangle Quemao and Las Mercedes de Paparo, from which sand samples of known volume were collected at the supralittoral area in 2007. Organisms were separated by age and sex classes, and their size, weight, density, biomass, total lipids (TL), lipid classes and fatty acid markers present in their tissues were determined. The sizes were similar for all age classes between the two locations, while the weights were higher for Mangle Quemao. The TL and lipid classes showed similar proportions between sexes, age classes and locations (TL: 3-5%; Phospholipids: 20-30%; Glycolipids: <1%; sterols: 4%). On the other hand, Triglycerides (TAG) were higher in Mangle Quemao, which may be related to the difference between the weights of two locations. The most abundant fatty acid biomarkers in the two studied sites were 16:0 and 18:1(n-9); this last one is characteristic of a carnivorous diet. The other nine markers were identified with changes in their distribution in organisms at Mangle Quemao and between males and females of both populations. Based on observed fatty acids markers we can assume T. margaritae as a generalist carnivore. T. margaritae cumple un papel importante en la descomposición de restos vegetales y animales en las costas venezolanas. El objetivo fue determinar las diferencias en la composición lipídica entre sexos y talla de la especie. Para esto, especímenes de T. margaritae fueron recolectados en la zona supralitoral de dos playas arenosas: Mangle Quemao y las Mercedes de Paparo. Posteriormente se separaron por talla y sexo determinándoles su peso, densidad, biomasa y perfil lipídico. Todas las categorías presentaron tallas similares entre localidades. Los pesos fueron superiores en los organismos de Mangle Quemao. Los lípidos totales presentaron proporciones similares entre sexos, talla y localidad (3-5%), al igual que los fosfololípidos (20-30%), glicolípidos (<1%) y esteroles (4%), exceptuando los triglicéridos (TAG), siendo estos superiores en Mangle Quemao. Esto último pudiendo estar relacionado con la diferencia de pesos entre localidades. Los ácidos grasos más abundantes en ambas localidades fueron 16:0 y 18:1(n-9). Se identificaron otros 9 marcadores con variaciones en su distribución. Con base en los biomarcadores se puede catalogar a T. margaritae como una especie carnívora- generalista, siendo sus poblaciones influenciadas por la disponibilidad de alimento que a su vez, podría inducir diferencias de peso, TAG y biomarcadores.
