ABSTRACT

This analysis has two interlinked goals. First, drawing on Lee Edelman, Dudley Andrew and Laura Mulvey, it theorizes the male homosexual optique, a mode of address that is predicated on the relationship between a film, its context of reception and its spectator, and which undermines the heterosexual exigencies of classical narrative style to implicitly address a gay male viewer. Second, it illustrates how the putatively heterosexual romance of Curtis Harrington's Night Tide (1961) appeals to gay male spectators through two mechanisms that underpin the optique, specifically the homosexual gaze and characterization. Key to each of these aims is how the non-normative heterosexual male body functions as a site of gay male objectification and identification. This article ultimately argues that Harrington's film enables us to envisage a queer cinema that is not predicated on fictions of homosexual desire but nevertheless provides a framework for deepening our understanding of what queer spectatorship (and the male homosexual gaze in particular) may involve.

ABSTRACT

Background@#Visual images are used to communicate health effectively, yet visual gender representation in the context of health is not well established as most studies focused on effectiveness, awareness, adoption, or behavior change. @*Objectives@#This study explored emerging gender myths in visual images used to communicate reproductive health, maternal health, family and nutrition, breastfeeding, and childcare with the premise that visuals may shape notions of gender roles and identities. @*Methodology@#Selected images from flipcharts produced by development communication practitioners were analyzed using Kress and Van Leeuwen's social semiotics (2006). Interpretive visual analysis was used to analyze visual impacts (denotation) and cultural meanings (connotation) by Barthes' Order of Signification, and gender roles and identity naturalized by the images. @*Results@#Images for health communication used more women as subjects relative to the topics that are primarily women's concern. The subject's gaze were indirect offered as items of information, showing a relation of symbolic equality, and implying that health topics are part of the social discourse. Visual impacts and cultural meanings of images uncovered myths that embody the roles, and identities, and social expectations of men and women in health. Emerging gender myths have to do with anatomy, mainly as basis for the role, identity, and expectations, especially of women as main actors in health. @*Conclusion@#This study reveals that gender roles and identities portrayed in health are still universal and are not historically and culturally contingent.

ABSTRACT

Short scenes: brief figures, relatively independent, freely arranged. A little model kit, shall we say. Therefore the reading should establish its own measure. As a combat, writing reveals itself as a small, intimate and daily renewed life commitment. Thus, being the writer as a fighter who studies (and therefore: inquires) the adversary: neither before nor after but during the fight. Assuming Roland Barthes as interlocutor, what we commonly call academic writing is understood as a special type of combat. As such, it is capable of offering us clues to think about writing and the gesture of writing amidst institutional demands.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Introduction: the acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is the desease that kills more in the world, up to 7 million deaths in 2012. In Brazil, data released by DATA-SUS in 2014 indicates 100 thousand each year because of this illness. The AMI hospitalized patient, mainly in their first 24 hours, needs intensive care, rest and careful measures aiming their safety, taking in consideration the oxihemodinamical changes that can happen with the effort produced by the myocardium. Among the cares ftom nurses to AMI patients, we can highlight the bedbath and the complexity that circles it, requiring from the nurse and the team actions that may prevent harm and promote their health. In order to implement safety and serve better quality care, the mobile tecnology has gotten room daily, as we see the increasing use of applications in the health area. A inversion was noticed in the imcreasing curve in relation to the use of cellphones to the detriment of desktop computer in 2014, showing its large use in the day-by-day of the population. The nurse team respensible for carrying out the bedbath needs to do this tecnique with safety to the patient aiming the least unnecessary damages to the health. Objective: Validate a multimidia application in mobile platform. Method: An applied methodological study, in technological production for validation of application mode. 12 smart nurses were selected via curriculum lattes, who evalueted the content of the application, using the content vadility index (CVI) with a cut of 80% and Kappa de Fleissfor analazing the assent of the experts. Results: The Safe Bathing Application was built with 4 modules, being validated by the CVI with excellent percentages of 0.93 of assent among the experts for the validation of its cintent. Kappa de Fleiss was classified as good and excllent in most of the validated items, that is, 0,80 to 1,00 according to Kappa classification. Conclusion: The Safe Bathing Application was validated according to its specific health content, having CVI and Kappa de Fleiss classified from good to excellent. The face validation is recommended by experts in the information tecnology area so that all the features of the application could be validated and not only its especific content by nurses and health professionals

ABSTRACT

Although the spiritual vibration of conversion can be felt (by the curious outsider) through what conversion performers say in their testimonial discourse, what transforms the convert 'on stage' into a 'new being' and what is 'the real' (le réel) in conversion performance remain unclear. An important question in this connection is, What is 'real' in a conversion representation, both with respect to the convert's interaction with the audience and to the construction of social reality? Following Lacan's tripartite register of the imaginary, the symbolic, and the real, in this essay I argue that through testimonial discourse converts construct social reality as an answer to the impossibility of 'the real' in their performative discursive practice. In the first part, I question the constructed nature of testimonial representations-as well as some academic knowledge production that has governed conversion research in the last few decades-and how these representations encourage 'outsiders' to read the narrative repertoire as a negation or mirroring 'the real' of the conversion experience. In the second part, I apply Roland Barthes' analytic reflections on photography to conversion research, especially the notions of the studium (the common ground of cultural meanings) and the punctum (a personal experience that inspires private meaning). This brings me to a number of theorists (mostly never used in the field of religious conversion)-Jacques Lacan, Roland Barthes, and Slavoj Zizek-who are important to the perspective that is developed in this essay.

ABSTRACT

To assess the prevalence of malaria among illegal gold miners in the French Guiana rainforest, we screened 205 miners during May-June 2014. Malaria prevalence was 48.3%; 48.5% of cases were asymptomatic. Patients reported self-medication with artemisinin-based combination therapy. Risk for emergence and spread of artemisinin resistance among gold miners in the rainforest is high.

ABSTRACT

Through the Barthesian theory of reading, which invokes a broader form of reading, of an immense sound texture — the rumor of language — in which a non-sense can give way to a new sense, liberated from the history of signs, the author creates the figure of the passer-reader.(AU)

ABSTRACT

In 1910, La Castañeda, a mental institution, was opened in Mexico City. Mexican dictator Porfirio Díaz had it built as one of the major “advances” that his government was able to obtain on the centennial of the Mexican fight for Independence. In 2010, the centennials of both Mexican Independence and the great mental institution coincide. Throughout its existence, it was visited by artists, photographers, and students from all walks of life who wanted to have a grasp of “madness.” From the multiple photographic records in existence, the author hereof chose three to comment on and contrasts them with the histories of madness (Foucault) and photography (Barthes).(AU)
