ABSTRACT

Recent advances in "omics" technologies have enabled the identification of new beef quality biomarkers and have also allowed for the early detection of quality defects such as dark-cutting beef, also known as DFD (dark, firm, and dry) beef. However, most of the studies conducted were carried out on a small number of animals and mostly applied gel-based proteomics. The present study proposes for the first time a Sequential Window Acquisition of All Theoretical Mass Spectra (SWATH-MS) proteomics approach to characterize and comprehensively quantify the post-mortem muscle proteome of DFD (pH24 ≥ 6.2) and CONTROL (5.4 ≤ pH24 ≤ 5.6) beef samples within the largest database of DFD/CONTROL beef samples to date (26 pairs of the Longissimus thoracis muscle samples of young bulls from Asturiana de los Valles breed, n = 52). The pairwise comparison yielded 35 proteins that significantly differed in their abundances between the DFD and CONTROL samples. Chemometrics methods using both PLS-DA and OPLS-DA revealed 31 and 36 proteins with VIP > 2.0, respectively. The combination of different statistical methods these being Volcano plot, PLS-DA and OPLS-DA allowed us to propose 16 proteins as good candidate biomarkers of DFD beef. These proteins are associated with interconnected biochemical pathways related to energy metabolism (DHRS7B and CYB5R3), binding and signaling (RABGGTA, MIA3, BPIFA2B, CAP2, APOBEC2, UBE2V1, KIR2DL1), muscle contraction, structure and associated proteins (DMD, PFN2), proteolysis, hydrolases, and activity regulation (AGT, C4A, GLB1, CAND2), and calcium homeostasis (ANXA6). These results evidenced the potential of SWATH-MS and chemometrics to accurately identify novel biomarkers for meat quality defects, providing a deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying dark-cutting beef condition.

ABSTRACT

The diffusion of microplastics in meat products is an emerging topic, as their impact on animal and human health is still largely unknown. The present study aimed to preliminarily determine the number and the quality of microplastics diffusion in beef hamburgers (n = 10) through Fourier-transformed infrared micro-spectroscopy in attenuated total reflectance mode analysis. Microplastics were detected in all analyzed samples. The abundance of microplastics ranged from 200.00 to 30,300.00 MP/kg. Microplastics observed in the analyzed samples were mainly characterized by irregular shapes (95.99%), grey color (70.16%), and dimensions comprised between 51 and 100 µm (57.46%). Eighteen different polymers were detected, with polycarbonate (30,300.00 MP/kg), polyethylene (1580.00 MP/kg) and polypropylene (750.00 MP/kg) being the most abundant classes. Results demonstrate an extensive diffusion of microplastics in the analyzed samples, which may be originated from various sources, including animal body, industrial processing, and packaging. Findings from this study will aid in pinpointing the source of microplastics contamination, enabling the creation of targeted guidelines to mitigate microplastics spread in processed meat food.

ABSTRACT

Beef is an important food product in human nutrition. The evaluation of the quality and safety of this food product is a matter that needs attention. Non-destructive determination of beef quality by image processing methods shows great potential for food safety, as it helps prevent wastage. Traditionally, beef quality determination by image processing methods has been based on handcrafted color features. It is, however, difficult to determine meat quality based on the color space model alone. This study introduces an effective beef quality classification approach by concatenating learning-based global and handcrafted color features. According to experimental results, the convVGG16 + HLS + HSV + RGB + Bi-LSTM model achieved high performance values. This model's accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, AUC, Jaccard index, and MCC values were 0.989, 0.990, 0.989, 0.990, 0.992, 0.979, and 0.983, respectively.

ABSTRACT

The exceptional biodegradability and active biological functions of bio-based packaging materials have attracted increasing interest. In this study, a bioplastic film was developed by introducing simultaneously polyphenols (tea polyphenols, TPs) and peptides (nisin) into a soy protein isolate/sodium alginate (SPI/SA) based film-forming matrix. The research results revealed that the dynamic coordinated interaction between TPs and nisin enhanced mechanical properties, UV-resistance, and thermal stability of bioplastic films. Furthermore, the bioplastic film exhibited antibacterial activity and antioxidant properties. Significantly, biofilm growth of Staphylococcus aureus treated with TPs-5/Nisin-5 bioplastic film was inhibited by 91.12% compared to the blank group. The shelf life of beef with TPs-5/Nisin-5 bioplastic film was prolonged by 2 days because of the synergistic effect of TPs and nisin. Additionally, the bioplastic film biodegraded in the natural environment about 21 days. This environmentally friendly regeneration strategy and the integration of advantageous functions provided ideas for the development of active food packaging.

ABSTRACT

Background: Identifying molecular mechanisms responsible for the response to heat stress is essential to increase production, reproduction, health, and welfare. This study aimed to identify early biological responses and potential biomarkers involved in the response to heat stress and animal's recovery in tropically adapted beef cattle through proteomic analysis of blood plasma. Methods: Blood samples were collected from 14 Caracu males during the heat stress peak (HSP) and 16 h after it (heat stress recovery-HSR) assessed based on wet bulb globe temperature index and rectal temperature. Proteome was investigated by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry from plasma samples, and the differentially regulated proteins were evaluated by functional enrichment analysis using DAVID tool. The protein-protein interaction network was evaluated by STRING tool. Results: A total of 1,550 proteins were detected in both time points, of which 84 and 65 were downregulated and upregulated during HSR, respectively. Among the differentially regulated proteins with the highest absolute log-fold change values, those encoded by the GABBR1, EPHA2, DUSP5, MUC2, DGCR8, MAP2K7, ADRA1A, CXADR, TOPBP1, and NEB genes were highlighted as potential biomarkers because of their roles in response to heat stress. The functional enrichment analysis revealed that 65 Gene Ontology terms and 34 pathways were significant (P < 0.05). We highlighted those that could be associated with the response to heat stress, such as those related to the immune system, complement system, hemostasis, calcium, ECM-receptor interaction, and PI3K-Akt and MAPK signaling pathways. In addition, the protein-protein interaction network analysis revealed several complement and coagulation proteins and acute-phase proteins as important nodes based on their centrality and edges. Conclusion: Identifying differentially regulated proteins and their relationship, as well as their roles in key pathways contribute to improve the knowledge of the mechanisms behind the response to heat stress in naturally adapted cattle breeds. In addition, proteins highlighted herein are potential biomarkers involved in the early response and recovery from heat stress in tropically adapted beef cattle.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of verjuice on beef M. biceps femoris (BF). BF blocks were marinated with 30%, 70%, and 100% verjuice solutions containing 2% NaCl, for different marination times (12, 24, 48, and 72 h). Verjuice marination reduced the pH values of BF samples from 6.77 in control sample to 3.66 in 100% of verjuice for 72 h. The decreased values of water holding capacity (from 54.06% to 47.46%) with increasing verjuice concentration (from 30% to 100% for 72 h) confirmed the drop of proteins isoelectric point of the muscle due to salt presence preventing fibers swelling. Less cookout was observed with increasing acid concentration. Marination time had no significant effect on L* and a* coordinates of uncooked samples while acidification made the samples lighter and less red. Enzymatic proteolysis of myosin and troponin-T concomitant with increase in myofibrillar fragmentation index contributed to the decrease of shear force in a way dependent on verjuice concentration and marination time. Sensory panelists gave the highest score to cooked samples marinated with 70% verjuice solution.

Dry fractionation represents a significant technique for separation of diverse fractions from beef tallow. The objective of this study was to undertake a systematic investigation of alterations in physicochemical properties, crystallization behavior, thermal properties, and flavor compounds that occur during the beef tallow dry fractionation process. The solid component yielded at 40, 30, and 15 °C were 44.88%, 33.72%, and 13.04% respectively, with an 8.36% liquid content at 15 °C, which was consistent with the characteristics of saturated fatty acids content. The ß - ß' transformation in the dry fractionation process was clearly revealed by X-ray diffraction. Differential scanning calorimetry curves exhibited alterations in exothermic and endothermic peak, as well as enthalpy. Electronic nose identified short-chain compounds, aldehydes, ketones, and nitrogen-containing substances as flavor compounds. Volatile compounds were quantified using HS-SPME-GC-MS. Overall, dry fractionation produces beef tallow fractionated compounds with diverse physicochemical properties and aromatic-active substances, thereby expanding its potential utilization.

Forty castrated Holstein calves underwent an adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) challenge to assess the effects of premortem stress on the longissimus lumborum (LL) following harvest. LL biopsies were collected before the challenge, at different harvest times (2, 12, 24, and 48 h; n = 10), and after 14 d aging. The expression of small heat shock proteins (SHSPs), deglycase 1 (DJ-1), and troponin were analyzed. Blood was analyzed throughout the ACTH challenge and at harvest for cortisol, oxidative stress, and complete blood count (CBC). Color and myofibrillar fragmentation index (MFI) were measured in aged samples. Unexpectedly, calves from different harvest times differed (p = 0.05) in cortisol response. Calves were divided into two different cortisol response groups (high or low; n = 20). Statistical analysis assessed the effects of cortisol response (n = 20), harvest time (n = 10), and their interaction. Harvest time altered SHSPs (p = 0.03), DJ-1 (p = 0.002), and troponin (p = 0.02) expression. Harvest time and cortisol response impacted steak color (p < 0.05), and harvest time altered steak pH (p < 0.0001). Additionally, various CBCs were changed (p < 0.05) by harvest time. Harvest time changed (p = 0.02) MFI. These data demonstrate that the protein expression, color, and MFI of the LL may be influenced by premortem stress.

Supplementing trace minerals is common in managing bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in post-weaned cattle; however, its influence on host immunity and metabolism in high-risk cattle remains unclear. We aimed to assess the impact of three supplementation programs on liver and serum trace element concentrations and blood gene expression. Fifty-six high-risk beef steers were randomly assigned to one of three groups over 60 days: (1) sulfate-sourced Cu, Co, Mn, and Zn (INR), (2) amino acid-complexed Cu, Mn, Co, and Zn (AAC), or (3) AAC plus trace mineral and vitamin drench (COMBO). Serum and liver biopsies for Cu, Co, Mn, and Zn at d0, d28, and d60 were analyzed from cattle free of BRD (n = 9 INR; n = 6 AAC; n = 10 COMBO). Differences and correlations of mineral concentrations were analyzed via generalized linear mixed models and Spearman's rank coefficients, respectively (p < 0.05). Whole blood RNA samples from healthy cattle (n = 4 INR; n = 4 AAC; n = 4 COMBO) at d0, d13, d28, d45, and d60 were sequenced and analyzed for differentially expressed genes (DEGs) via glmmSeq (FDR < 0.05), edgeR (FDR < 0.10), and Trendy (p < 0.10). Serum and liver Cu and Co concentrations increased over time in all groups, with higher liver Cu in COMBO (487.985 µg/g) versus AAC (392.043 µg/g) at d60 (p = 0.013). Serum and liver Cu concentrations (ρ = 0.579, p = 6.59 × 10-8) and serum and liver Co concentrations (ρ = 0.466, p = 2.80 × 10-5) were linearly correlated. Minimal gene expression differences were found between AAC versus COMBO (n = 2 DEGs) and INR versus COMBO (n = 0 DEGs) over time. AAC versus INR revealed 107 DEGs (d13-d60) with increased traits in AAC including metabolism of carbohydrates/fat-soluble vitamins, antigen presentation, ATPase activity, and B- and T-cell activation, while osteoclast differentiation and neutrophil degranulation decreased in AAC compared to INR. Our study identifies gene expression differences in high-risk cattle fed inorganic or amino acid-complexed mineral supplements, revealing adaptive immune and metabolic mechanisms that may be improved by organically sourced supplementation.

We assessed the effects of consuming a U.S.-style healthy dietary pattern (HDP) with lean, unprocessed beef (BEEF) compared to a U.S.-style HDP without meat (vegetarian, VEG) on short-term changes in cardiometabolic disease (CMD) risk factors in adults classified as overweight or obese. Forty-one adults (22 females, 19 males; age 39.9 ± 8.0 y; BMI 29.6 ± 3.3 kg/m2; mean ± SD) completed two 5-week controlled feeding periods (randomized, crossover, controlled trial). For the BEEF HDP, two 3-oz (168-g) servings/d of lean, unprocessed beef were predominately substituted for some starchy vegetables and refined grains in the VEG HDP. Baseline and post-intervention measurements were fasting CMD risk factors, with serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL), total cholesterol (TC), and total apolipoprotein B as primary outcomes. VEG reduced LDL, insulin, and glucose compared to BEEF. Reductions did not differ between VEG vs. BEEF for TC, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), apolipoprotein A1, small, dense LDL IV, buoyant HDL2b, TC-to-HDL ratio, and systolic blood pressure. Total apolipoprotein B and all other CMD risk factors measured were not influenced by HDP type nor changed over time. Adopting a U.S.-style HDP that is either vegetarian or omnivorous with beef improved multiple cardiometabolic disease risk factors among adults classified as overweight or obese.

ABSTRACT

While highly connected food chains provide numerous benefits, they lack traceability and transparency. As such, understanding the spatial heterogeneity in their environmental burdens is critical for targeted interventions. This is especially important for nutrient-related impacts such as nitrogen since the release of reactive nitrogen has been linked to loss of biodiversity and decrease in water quality in different parts of the world. Animal feed production is heavily dependent on synthetic fertilizers, and the consumption of beef products, in particular, is associated with high nitrogen footprints. Although there is a rich body of work on nutrient footprints of beef production, there is a gap in understanding the spatial distribution of the nutrient releases throughout the beef supply chain in the U.S. We present an optimization-based framework to trace supply chain networks of beef products at the county level. Using publicly available data, we construct a weighted network of nutrient flows based on mass balance, including synthetic fertilizers, manure production, and crop uptake and residues. The results show that beef consumption in a county can be associated with nitrogen losses in hundreds of counties. One year worth of beef consumption in the United States released approximately 1.33 teragrams (Tg) of N to the environment, and most of it as diffuse pollution during the feed production phase. Analysis also revealed the huge disparity between consumption-based and production-based impacts of beef and the need for considering consumption-based accounting in discourse around the environmental sustainability of food systems.

This study aimed to evaluate the changes in imported beef loin before and after cooking, depending on cooking methods, through quality characteristics, biogenic amine (BA) content analysis, and electronic tongue system. Sous-vide (SV), characterized by the least cooking loss, exhibited the highest water content at 64.11%. Pan-grilling (PG), air-frying (AF), and IR-grilling (IR) methods showed a range of water content from 46.90 to 54.19%. In the taste results by the electronic tongue, umami and saltiness were higher in the high cooking temperature methods (PG, AF, IR, and combined sous-vide + pan-grilling [SVP]) than SV (p < 0.05). Compared to the control, total BAs concentrations decreased by 67.32% (SV), 64.90% (AF), 62.46% (IR), and 50.64% (PG), and SVP showed the largest decrease of 68.64% (p < 0.05). Therefore, SVP was considered the most effective cooking method for reducing BAs and maintaining the quality characteristics of beef loin. The ginger-infused stewed beef exhibited a satisfactory odor in Chinese cooking meat. This study aimed to reveal its aroma quality and perception mechanism through electronic nose, sensory evaluation and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) coupled with chemometric methods and molecular docking. Sensory evaluation and electronic nose analysis indicated ginger could greatly modify aroma profile of beef. Most C6-C10 aldehydes significantly decreased and terpenes increased in ginger-infused stewed beef. Orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) found 7 key markers for distinguishing stewed beef with or without ginger. Ginger additions could reduce fatty acids consumption. Moreover, the key contributors of fatty, bloody, meaty, ginger and mint aroma attributes, namely (E)-2-octenal, 1-octen-3-ol, 2-acetylthiazole, zingiberene and γ-elemene, respectively, selected by partial least squares regression (PLSR) analysis were docked with the olfactory receptor. Hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions were the main interaction forces between olfactory receptor and the five compounds.

In 2022, the value of United States (US) beef and beef product exports was $11.7 billion, and the US was the world's largest beef producer and second-largest beef exporter by volume. Therefore, we conducted surveys to evaluate beef purchasing behavior among consumers in important and emerging US beef export markets, including Japan, the United Kingdom (UK), Germany, and Mexico. Results reveal differences in consumers' beef purchasing behavior across countries. Most Mexican consumers purchase beef two-to-three times a week, while consumers in other countries typically purchase it once a week. Using ordered probit models, we examined the factors associated with beef purchase frequency in each country. Japanese consumers who consider price to be an important factor when purchasing beef are less likely to purchase it frequently. German consumers, for whom brands are important when buying beef, are more likely to buy it frequently. British consumers, who consider hormone-free production to be important when purchasing beef, are less likely to buy it frequently. Mexican consumers, who consider grass-fed production to be an important factor when purchasing beef, are less likely to buy it frequently. Across all countries, individuals who purchase beef at supermarkets and from butchers are more likely to purchase it more often. Results also indicate that various consumer demographics are associated with beef purchase frequency across countries. The findings provide valuable insights for stakeholders regarding international consumer beef purchasing behavior.

A double-layer film was developed with tannic acid (TA) co-pigmented purple potato anthocyanin extract (PAE)-agar as the inner layer, and K-carrageenan-oregano essential oil Pickering emulsion (OPE)/silver nanoparticles (TA-AgNPs) as the outer layer. Molecular docking and FT-IR results elucidated that intermolecular hydrogen bond was the main interaction between components in the agar-carrageenan matrix, with TA and PAE contributing to intensified anthocyanin color through π-π stacking. The incorporation of OPE/TA-AgNPs enhanced the film's hydrophobicity (WCA > 100°) and UV-vis barrier (close to 0% at 200-320 nm, effectively impeding UVA, UVB, and UVC) properties and exhibited outstanding antioxidant (DPPH scavenging rate > 88%) and antimicrobial activities. This film showed a significant color change in the pH range of 2-12 (from pink to yellow) and a considerable sensitivity to volatile amines within 2 min. The films effectively alleviated beef spoilage (extending the shelf life of beef for 1d) and reflected the freshness of beef during storage. Additionally, the digital color information of the film was obtained by a smartphone combined with RGB values analysis to quantify the freshness of beef rapidly. Therefore, this study expands the application of food packaging films with freshness preservation and monitoring in the field of animal-derived food.

Long-distance transport can cause stress to beef cattle impairing health and growth performances. This study aimed to deepen the knowledge of the effects of long-distance transport on young bulls' metabolic profile to identify reliable blood parameters for monitoring their health and welfare. Eighty Charolais young bulls, transported for 12 hours to the final fattening unit, were weighed and blood sampled at three time intervals: before leaving the commingling centre (day -1), upon arrival at the fattening unit (day 0), and 7 days post-arrival (day 7). These bulls were part of a larger study aimed at testing whether the animals have some benefit from the supplementation of live yeast and selenium through slow-release rumen boluses that were administered to half of them before departure from France ('Yeast' vs 'Control' group). The effect of the supplementation on the parameters considered in this study was included in the statistical analysis to account for the structure of the experimental design. Transport affected the initial body weight of the animals, which dropped on day 0 and it was not fully recovered on day 7. Most plasma traits of protein, energy, hepato-muscle, and mineral profiles were affected by transport. Cortisol was also assessed and peaked at day 0. The footprint of the long-distance transport on bulls' metabolic profile indicated a combination of stress, energy deficit, and muscle damage, with a certain degree of dehydration and liver impairment. Plasma traits measured on day -1 highlighted that stressful conditions and physiological responses of the bulls to recover homeostasis already started during the commingling phase before departure. No effect of supplementation was detected, except for higher selenium plasma level in Yeast bulls at day 7. Among blood parameters, non-esterified fatty acids, total protein, cortisol, glucose, and iron were those responsible for most of the variation in metabolic profile of bulls undergoing long journey. Therefore, these traits might be used as major biomarkers to assess stress in transported beef cattle, helping to identify critical situations for which proper mitigating actions should be taken. The outcomes of this study suggested that preventive measures against transport stress in beef cattle should start at the commingling of the animals in the collection centers, thus before departure.

Introduction: Theileria orientalis Ikeda genotype is an emerging cattle disease in the US. Since 2017, when T. orientalis Ikeda was discovered in beef cattle in two counties in Virginia, cattle infections have risen to include ~67% of Virginia counties and 14 states. Consistent with New Zealand studies, many infected herds in Virginia were >90% positive upon initial testing without overt evidence of infection. Central bull tests present a unique opportunity to study the effects of T. orientalis Ikeda infections, as bulls from multiple source herds are consolidated. The objective of this study was to determine if infection with T. orientalis Ikeda affected the average daily gain (ADG), adjusted yearling weight (AYW) and breeding soundness of bulls at two test stations in Virginia over a period of years. Materials and methods: The bulls were fed and housed similarly to compare their growth performance and breeding soundness. For T. orientalis Ikeda testing, DNA was extracted from whole blood for quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Results: The number of bulls infected with T. orientalis Ikeda at initial delivery to the stations increased significantly over the years studied. Multivariable linear regression models, using Angus bulls from Virginia test stations, indicated no significant effect on ADG or AYW in bulls that became test positive during the test or were positive for the duration, compared to Angus bulls that were negative for the duration. At LOC A, the odds of passing a breeding soundness exam (BSE) were not significantly different for bulls that turned positive during the test or were positive for the duration, compared to bulls that were negative for the duration of the test. At LOC B, bulls that became positive during the test were 2.4 times more likely (95% CI: 1.165-4.995, p = 0.016) to pass their BSE compared to bulls that remained negative throughout the test. Discussion: We do not suppose that an obscured infection of T. orientalis Ikeda is protective for bulls to pass a BSE. However, this study demonstrates an obscured infection of T. orientalis Ikeda does not negatively affect weight gain or achievement of a satisfactory BSE rating at the central bull test stations in Virginia.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: To enhance the beef cattle industry, Heilongjiang Province has developed a new Crossbred beef cattle variety through crossbreeding with exotic commercial breeds. This new variety exhibits relatively excellent meat quality, and efficient reproductive performance, catering to market demands. Method: This study employed whole genome resequencing technology to analyze the genetic pedigree and diversity of 19 Heilongjiang Crossbred beef cattle, alongside 59 published genomes from East Asian, Eurasian, and European taurine cattle as controls. In addition, genes related to production traits were also searched by identifying Runs of Homozygosity (ROH) islands and important fragments from ancestors. Results: A total of 14,427,729 biallelic SNPs were discovered, with the majority located in intergenic and intron regions and a small percentage in exon regions, impacting protein function. Population genetic analyses including Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Neighbor-Joining (NJ) tree, and ADMIXTURE identified Angus, Holstein, and Mishima as the main ancestors of Crossbred beef cattle. In genetic diversity analysis, nucleotide diversity, linkage disequilibrium, and inbreeding coefficient analysis reveal that the genetic diversity of Crossbred beef cattle is at a moderate level, and a higher inbreeding coefficient indicates the need for careful breeding management. In addition, some genes related to economic traits are identified through the identification of Runs of Homozygosity (ROH) islands and important fragments from ancestors. Conclusion: This comprehensive genomic characterization supports the targeted improvement of economically important traits in Crossbred beef cattle, facilitating advanced breeding strategies.

In this study, the antibacterial mechanism of metabolites of Lactobacillus plantarum SCB2505 (MLp SCB2505) against Pseudomonas lundensis (P. lundensis) SCB2605 was investigated, along with evaluation of their preservative effects on dry-aged beef. The results demonstrated the effective inhibition of MLp SCB2505 on the growth and biofilm synthesis of P. lundensis. The treatment with MLp SCB2505 led to the compromised membrane integrity, as evidenced by reduced intracellular ATP content, increased extracellular AKPase, K+ and protein content, as well as disrupted cell morphology. Further metabolomics analysis revealed that MLp SCB2505 interfered amino acid metabolism, nucleotide metabolism, cofactor and vitamin metabolism, lipid metabolism and respiratory chain in P. lundensis, ultimately leading to the interrupted life activities and even death of the bacteria. Besides, MLp SCB2505 could effectively inhibit the growth of Pseudomonas in dry-aged beef and delay spoilage. These findings propose the potential application of MLp SCB2505 as an antibacterial agent in meat products.

ABSTRACT

We aimed to evaluate the metabolic and performance differences in primiparous Nellore cows, which became pregnant at 14 or 24-mo old. Thirty-eight cows with 202 ± 5 days of gestation were divided into two treatments according to breeding age: 14 or 24-mo. Cows were evaluated for body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), carcass characteristics, milk yield, calves's performance, and blood characteristics. The animals were managed in eight paddocks under continuous grazing and evaluated from 90 d before parturition until 240 d after calving. We observed an interaction between breeding age and time (P < 0.01) for cow BW. Both breeding age categories experienced BW loss during parturition, with a concurrent decrease in BCS. However, following their first calving, the BW of 24-mo cows remained stable (P > 0.05), whereas 14-mo cows exhibited a gradual recovery in BW after parturition (P < 0.05). Milk yield was greater in 24-mo animals (P < 0.01), but decreased with increasing milking days (p < 0.05) for both groups. The weight gain calves from the heifers bred at 24-mo was greater (P < 0.01), which reflected in greater BW at weaning. The beta-hydroxybutyrate (ß-OHB) concentration was greater before calving and a marked decrease after parturition (P < 0.05). The 24-mo cows had greater blood ß-OHB (P < 0.01) at prepartum and 30 days after calving. Blood progesterone was greater in 24-mo cows (P > 0.05). Primiparous beef cows that conceive at either 14 or 24-months of age exhibit distinct nutritional requirements and metabolic profiles. Notably, cows that conceive at 24-months of age have the advantage of weaning heavier calves and displaying a more consistent reproductive cycle following their first calving than cows that conceive at 14-months.
