ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity, individuals suffering from two or more chronic diseases, has become a major health challenge worldwide, especially in populous and prosperous cities, where studies of this phenomenon in China are limited. We examined the prevalence, trends, patterns, and associated factors of multimorbidity from 2009 to 2018 among community-dwelling adults in Guangzhou, China. METHODS: We conducted serial cross-sectional surveys for chronic diseases in Guangzhou, China, in 2009, 2013, and 2018. General and stratified prevalence were standardized using demographic data. Multivariable logistic regression and hierarchical cluster analysis were applied to identify associated factors and to assess the correlations and patterns of multimorbidity, respectively. RESULTS: This study included 23,284 adults aged 18 and over in 2009, 18,551 in 2013, and 15,727 in 2018. The standardized prevalence of multimorbidity increased substantially, with 12.69% (95% CI: 10.45-15.33) in 2009, 25.44% (95% CI: 23.47-27.52) in 2013, and 35.13% (95% CI:32.64-37.70) in 2018 (P for trend <0.001). The highest bi- and triple-conditions of multimorbidity were dyslipidemia (DP) and overweight or obesity (OO) (12.54%, 95% CI: 11.68-13.46), and DP, OO, and Hypertension (HT) (3.99%, 95% CI: 3.47-4.58) in 2018. From 2009 to 2018, (1) The majority of multimorbidity patterns showed a high prevalence; (2) The percentage of participants with only one chronic condition was found lower, while the percentage with multiple conditions was higher. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of chronic disease multimorbidity in Guangzhou China, has increased substantially among adults. Effective policies targeting multimorbidity are urgently needed, especially for the health management of primary medical institutions.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic affected healthcare delivery globally, impacting care access and delivery of essential services. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the pandemic's impact on care for patients with type 2 diabetes and factors associated with care disruption in Kenya and Tanzania. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among adults diagnosed with diabetes pre-COVID-19. Data were collected in February-April 2022 reflecting experiences at two time-points, three months before and the three months most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. A questionnaire captured data on blood glucose testing, changes in medication prescription and access, and healthcare provider access. RESULTS: We recruited 1000 participants (500/country). Diabetes care was disrupted in both countries, with 34.8% and 32.8% of the participants reporting change in place and frequency of testing in Kenya, respectively. In Tanzania, 12.4% and 17.8% reported changes in location and frequency of glucose testing, respectively. The number of health facility visits declined, 14.4% (p < 0.001) in Kenya and 5.6% (p = 0.001) in Tanzania. In Kenya, there was a higher likelihood of severe care disruption among insured patients (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.56, 95% confidence interval [CI][1.05-2.34]; p = 0.029) and a lower likelihood among patients residing in rural areas (aOR, 0.35[95%CI, 0.22-0.58]; p < 0.001). Tanzania had a lower likelihood of severe disruption among insured patients (aOR, 0.51[95%CI, 0.33-0.79]; p = 0.003) but higher likelihood among patients with low economic status (aOR, 1.81[95%CI, 1.14-2.88]; p = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 disrupted diabetes care more in Kenya than Tanzania. Health systems and emergency preparedness should be strengthened to ensure continuity of service provision for patients with diabetes.


Main findings: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted diabetes care in Kenya and Tanzania resulting in changes in place and frequency of blood glucose testing, medication prescribed (less oral hypoglycaemics and more insulin), fewer health facility visits and more difficulty accessing healthcare providers.Added knowledge: This study quantifies the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on diabetes care in Kenya and Tanzania, and describes the factors associated with care disruption in both countries.Global health impact for policy and action: Evidence on diabetes care disruption is useful in making plans and policies responsive to the needs of diabetes patients during pandemics or related emergency situations.

ABSTRACT

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing condition that is characterized by itching and redness of the skin. Our modern usage of atopic dermatitis dates back to 1933, when Wise and Sulzberger first coined the term to signify the disease's close association with other respiratory atopy, such as bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis. A recent systematic review of 69 cross-sectional and cohort studies has confirmed that AD is now a worldwide phenomenon with lifetime AD prevalences of well over 20% in many affluent country settings. Although there is no obvious consistent overall global trend in the prevalence of AD, studies have shown that climate, urbanization, lifestyle, and socioeconomic class influence the prevalence of atopic dermatitis. Despite the pervasiveness of the disease, an understanding of atopic dermatitis has been hampered by a number of factors. Data suggests that extrinsic environmental factors work in concert with intrinsic immune mechanism and genetic factors to drive disease progression. With such a complex etiology, management of atopic dermatitis currently at best achieves symptomatic control rather than cure. This approach poses a significant burden on healthcare resources, as well as patients' quality of life. Current management methods of AD often involve a combination of non-pharmacologic modalities and prescription medications. Though they can be effective when employed, there are significant barriers to treatment for patients including time, costs, and medication side effects. Our aim, throughout this text, is to explore the complexities of AD, providing the healthcare provider with tips and tricks to improve patient care and satisfaction and the most current trends and treatment approaches on the horizon.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This case report depicts the application of lifestyle medicine to an adult, non-Hispanic, African American patient in their late 40s, with poorly controlled hypertension and associated co-morbidities of obesity, Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), depression and multiple degenerative joint disease (DJD). The patient was managed via telehealth for 1 year. Background: Chronic diseases are major risks to population health. Among these, diabetes, obesity, and hypertension are the most prevalent. United States (U.S.) prevalence estimates 34.2 million (10.5%) people of all ages are diagnosed diabetes cases and 7.3 million (2.8%) adults met diagnostic criteria but are but are not formally diagnosed. As such, diabetes ranked eighth for U.S all-cause mortality. The incidence of diabetes varied across the country from 1.2 to 46.2 per 1000 persons in 2016. Among these, 89.0% were overweight or obese, 38.0% were physically inactive and 68.4% were reported with a blood pressure of 140/90 mmHg or above. In 2017, the total cost of diagnosed diabetes was calculated at 327 billion dollars. In 2019, Hypertension (HTN) was reported as a primary or contributing cause in more than half a million deaths in the U.S. In the U.S. the HTN prevalence is 47%, or 116 million. Blood pressure (BP) control is higher among non-Hispanic white adults (32%) than non-Hispanic black adults (25%), non-Hispanic Asian adults (19%), or Hispanic adults (25%). Obesity is a modifiable risk factor for cardiometabolic disease. This especially appears true with less active to non-active lifestyles of this modern century where people tend to eat more easily accessible, unhealthy and processed food. Pandemic isolation has further enhanced people's sedentary lifestyle. An answer for many of these issues is behavioral lifestyle modification. Lifestyle management is a flexible and a multi-focused approach program based on detecting individual health risks, barriers, and goal development through motivational interviewing and clinical coaching.

ABSTRACT

Lifestyle interventions that optimize nutrition, physical activity, sleep health, social connections, and stress management, and address substance use, can reduce cardiometabolic risk. Despite substantial evidence that healthful plant-based diets are beneficial for long-term cardiometabolic health and longevity, uncertainty lies in how to implement plant-based lifestyle programs in traditional clinical settings, especially in safety-net contexts with finite resources. In this mixed-methods implementation evaluation of the Plant-Based Lifestyle Medicine Program piloted in a large public healthcare system, we surveyed participants and conducted qualitative interviews and focus groups with stakeholders to assess program demand in the eligible population and feasibility of implementation within the safety-net setting. Program demand was high and exceeded capacity. Participants' main motivations for joining the program included gaining more control over life, reducing medication, and losing weight. The program team, approach, and resources were successful facilitators. However, the program faced administrative and payor-related challenges within the safety-net setting, and participants reported barriers to access. Stakeholders found the program to be valuable, despite challenges in program delivery and access. Findings provide guidance for replication. Future research should focus on randomized controlled trials to assess clinical outcomes as a result of program participation.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: Chronic dyspnea, a distressing symptom in patients with complex chronic conditions, is linked to higher risks of mortality. This study aimed to identify nursing interventions that could improve self-management for complex chronic patients, thereby enhancing control over chronic dyspnea. The findings intend to guide nursing care strategies that promote self-management among this population. Methods: We searched the databases Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR), and Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) databases were searched in December 2023. We included adult patients with complex chronic conditions with chronic dyspnoea. The team screened articles collaboratively, using Rayyan software. A qualitative appraisal was performed according to JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist tools. The review protocol is registered under the number CRD42023456021. Results: Our review included 18 studies that explored a variety of interventions for chronic dyspnea. We identified pharmacological interventions (such as oxygen therapy and inhalation treatments) and non-pharmacological approaches (including educational programs, breathing exercises, fluid intake management, body awareness techniques, peer support, emotional intelligence training, and the use of web applications). Those interventions empower patients, improve their ability to fulfill life roles, mitigate emotional distress, and improve overall quality of life. Nursing care can be crucial in enabling individuals to achieve independence and autonomy in self-care. Conclusions: Promoting self-management for chronic dyspnea in complex chronic patients requires a holistic approach, encompassing multidisciplinary interventions, individualized self-care education, peer engagement, and technological support. Current research on self-management inadequately addresses interventions targeting patient behaviour change. It highlights the need to delve deeper into the self-management process. Further research is needed to expand the evidence base and refine these interventions.

Intimate partners play an important role in chronic diseases. Despite the chronic disease burden increase in sub-Saharan Africa, very few culturally-relevant quantitative measures of intimate relationship functioning are available. We conducted an empirical investigation evaluating the psychometric properties of the South African Relationship Functioning Assessment (SARFA) assessing healthy relationship functioning in N = 150 community members (50% women; M age = 27.2 years) living in the Vulindlela area of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Item development was based on prior qualitative research from two South African communities. All assessments were conducted in isiZulu, participants' primary language. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted on the initial 39-item measure. The best-fitting model consisted of one factor with 22 items. The SARFA's internal consistency was α = .94. Convergent validity was observed via significant positive associations (all rs ≥ .38, p < .001) between the SARFA's total score and measures of trust, emotional intimacy, constructive communication, sexual satisfaction, and relationship control (women only). Divergent validity was observed for women only. Encouraging initial psychometric properties of a culturally-relevant measure of relationship functioning in KwaZulu-Natal may have relevance to other communities and potential to be used in research involving couples and health in chronic disease-burdened communities.

Introduction: During the COVID-19 pandemic, Trinidad and Tobago's government implemented lockdowns and limited the availability of outpatient clinics to curb virus transmission. Subsequently, telemedicine via telephone calls was utilized to address infection control and continuity of care for chronic disease patients. Methods: An observational study was conducted at three primary care facilities in Eastern Trinidad using convenience sampling to review retrospectively telemedicine patients' medical records from October 2019 to February 2020 (before telemedicine) and from March 2020 to September 2020 (during telemedicine) for comparative analysis. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 28.0 software and Microsoft Excel. Results: A total of 199 patient files were analyzed; 57.3% of these were female; 52.3% were 60 years and older. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test demonstrated no statistically significant differences between random blood sugar (RBS) readings (0.355), weight (0.621), or systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP; 0.239 and 0.232, respectively) before and during the 6-month period of telemedicine consultation. Patients compliant with medication before the use of telemedicine were 14 times more likely to attain target BPs. There was no significant association between compliance with prescribed therapy and BP control (0.335) during the period of telemedicine. Discussion: The findings support the use of telemedicine to manage chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and coronary heart disease, as the standard of care was preserved, and no inferiority of recorded outcomes was demonstrated. Although there was an overall decrease in compliance during the telemedicine period compared with before, comparative analysis exhibited no statistically significant differences in BP or RBS readings.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Prolonged work in the heat increases the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) in young men. Whether aging and age-associated chronic disease may exacerbate the risk of AKI remains unclear. METHODS: We evaluated plasma neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and serum kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM1) before and after 180 min of moderate-intensity work (200 W/m2) in temperate (wet-bulb globe temperature [WBGT] 16 °C) and hot (32 °C) environments in healthy young (n = 13, 22 years) and older men (n = 12, 59 years), and older men with type 2 diabetes (T2D; n = 9, 60 years) or hypertension (HTN; n = 9, 60 years). RESULTS: There were no changes in NGAL or KIM1 concentrations following prolonged work in temperate conditions in any group. Despite a similar work tolerance, the relative change in NGAL was greater in the older group when compared to the young group following exercise in the hot condition (mean difference + 82 ng/mL; p < 0.001). Baseline concentrations of KIM1 were ~ 22 pg/mL higher in the older relative to young group, increasing by ~ 10 pg/mL in each group after exercise in the heat (both p ≤ 0.03). Despite a reduced work tolerance in the heat in older men with T2D (120 ± 40 min) and HTN (108 ± 42 min), elevations in NGAL and KIM1 were similar to their healthy counterparts. CONCLUSION: Age may be associated with greater renal stress following prolonged work in the heat. The similar biomarker responses in T2D and HTN compared to healthy older men, alongside reduced exercise tolerance in the heat, suggest these individuals may exhibit greater vulnerability to heat-induced AKI if work is prolonged.

AIM: This constructivist grounded theory study aimed to (1) explore patients' experiences of and roles in interprofessional collaborative practice for chronic conditions in primary care and (2) consider the relevance and alignment of an existing theoretical framework on patients' roles and based on the experiences of patient advocates. BACKGROUND: High-quality management of chronic conditions requires an interprofessional collaborative practice model of care considering an individual's mental, physical, and social health situation. Patients' experiences of this model in the primary care setting are relatively unknown. METHODS: A constructivist grounded theory approach was taken. Interview data were collected from primary care patients with chronic conditions across Australia in August 2020 - February 2022. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and thematically analysed by (1) initial line-by-line coding, (2) focused coding, (3) memo writing, (4) categorisation, and (5) theme and sub-theme development. Themes and sub-themes were mapped against an existing theoretical framework to expand and confirm the results from a previous study with a similar research aim. FINDINGS: Twenty adults with chronic conditions spanning physical disability, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, autoimmune, and mental health conditions participated. Two themes were developed: (1) Adapting to Change with two sub-themes describing how patients adapt to interprofessional team care and (2) Shifting across the spectrum of roles, with five sub-themes outlining the roles patients enact while receiving care. The findings suggest that patients' roles are highly variable and fluid in interprofessional collaborative practice, and further work is recommended to develop a resource to support greater patient engagement in interprofessional collaborative practice.

The primary objective of this study was to examine the association between food security status and metabolic syndrome (MetS) using a nationally representative dataset. We hypothesized that food insecurity would be associated with an increased odds of having MetS. This was a cross-sectional analysis of data from the 2005-2006 to 2015-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data collection cycles. Food security was measured using the US Food Security Survey Module. Presence of MetS was determined using the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. The association between food insecurity and MetS was examined using logistic regression models stratified by sex and adjusted for poverty to income ratio, age, race, marital status, educational attainment, smoking status, and body mass index. After adjusting for covariates, men with marginal (odds ratio, 1.64; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.22-2.20) and low (odds ratio, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.02-1.73) food security had a higher odds of having MetS than men with full food security; however, this association was lost among men with very low food security. For women, very low food security was associated with a 1.61 times greater odds of having MetS (95% CI, 1.16-2.25). These results suggest that food insecurity is generally associated with an increased prevalence of MetS for women, but not necessarily for men. These findings highlight the need to address rising food insecurity rates, while also highlighting the need for further research to fully elucidate the role of gender and sex in food insecurity and chronic disease.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) synthesize high-quality information to support evidence-based clinical practice. In primary care, numerous CPGs must be integrated to address the needs of patients with multiple risks and conditions. The BETTER program aims to improve prevention and screening for cancer and chronic disease in primary care by synthesizing CPGs into integrated, actionable recommendations. We describe the process used to harmonize high-quality cancer and chronic disease prevention and screening (CCDPS) CPGs to update the BETTER program. METHODS: A review of CPG databases, repositories, and grey literature was conducted to identify international and Canadian (national and provincial) CPGs for CCDPS in adults 40-69 years of age across 19 topic areas: cancers, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, hepatitis C, obesity, osteoporosis, depression, and associated risk factors (i.e., diet, physical activity, alcohol, cannabis, drug, tobacco, and vaping/e-cigarette use). CPGs published in English between 2016 and 2021, applicable to adults, and containing CCDPS recommendations were included. Guideline quality was assessed using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE) II tool and a three-step process involving patients, health policy, content experts, primary care providers, and researchers was used to identify and synthesize recommendations. RESULTS: We identified 51 international and Canadian CPGs and 22 guidelines developed by provincial organizations that provided relevant CCDPS recommendations. Clinical recommendations were extracted and reviewed for inclusion using the following criteria: 1) pertinence to primary prevention and screening, 2) relevance to adults ages 40-69, and 3) applicability to diverse primary care settings. Recommendations were synthesized and integrated into the BETTER toolkit alongside resources to support shared decision-making and care paths for the BETTER program. CONCLUSIONS: Comprehensive care requires the ability to address a person's overall health. An approach to identify high-quality clinical guidance to comprehensively address CCDPS is described. The process used to synthesize and harmonize implementable clinical recommendations may be useful to others wanting to integrate evidence across broad content areas to provide comprehensive care. The BETTER toolkit provides resources that clearly and succinctly present a breadth of clinical evidence that providers can use to assist with implementing CCDPS guidance in primary care.

ABSTRACT

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) pose a global health challenge, leading to substantial morbidity, mortality, and economic strain. Our review underscores the escalating incidence of NCDs worldwide and highlights the potential of regenerative agriculture (RA) products in mitigating these diseases. We also explore the efficacy of dietary interventions in NCD management and prevention, emphasizing the superiority of plant-based diets over those high in processed foods and red meat. Examining the role of the gut microbiome in various diseases, including liver disorders, allergies, metabolic syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and colon cancer, we find compelling evidence implicating its influence on disease development. Notably, dietary modifications can positively affect the gut microbiome, fostering a symbiotic relationship with the host and making this a critical strategy in disease prevention and treatment. Investigating agricultural practices, we identify parallels between soil/plant and human microbiome studies, suggesting a crucial link between soil health, plant- and animal-derived food quality, and human well-being. Conventional/Industrial agriculture (IA) practices, characterized in part by use of chemical inputs, have adverse effects on soil microbiome diversity, food quality, and ecosystems. In contrast, RA prioritizes soil health through natural processes, and includes avoiding synthetic inputs, crop rotation, and integrating livestock. Emerging evidence suggests that food from RA systems surpasses IA-produced food in quality and nutritional value. Recognizing the interconnection between human, plant, and soil microbiomes, promoting RA-produced foods emerges as a strategy to improve human health and environmental sustainability. By mitigating climate change impacts through carbon sequestration and water cycling, RA offers dual benefits for human and planetary health and well-being. Emphasizing the pivotal role of diet and agricultural practices in combating NCDs and addressing environmental concerns, the adoption of regional RA systems becomes imperative. Increasing RA integration into local food systems can enhance food quality, availability, and affordability while safeguarding human health and the planet's future.

BACKGROUND: The growing number of older adults with chronic diseases challenges already strained healthcare systems. Fragmented systems make transitions between healthcare settings demanding, posing risks during transitions from in-patient care to home. Despite efforts to make healthcare person-centered during care transitions, previous research indicates that these ambitions are not yet achieved. Therefore, there is a need to examine whether recent initiatives have positively influenced older adults' experiences of transitions from in-patient care to home. This study aimed to describe older adults' experiences of being discharged from in-patient care to home. METHODS: This study had a qualitative descriptive design. Individual interviews were conducted in January-June 2022 with 17 older Swedish adults with chronic diseases and needing coordinated care transitions from in-patient care to home. Data were analyzed using inductive qualitative content analysis. RESULTS: The findings indicate that despite being the supposed main character, the older adult is not always involved in the planning and decision-making of their own care transition, often having poor insight and involvement in, and impact on, these aspects. This leads to an experience of mismatch between actual needs and the expectations of planned support after discharge. CONCLUSIONS: The study reveals a notable disparity between the assumed central role of older adults in care transitions and their insight and involvement in planning and decision-making.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identify the associations of chronic physical disease between patients with severe mental illness (SMI) and the general population of South Korea. METHODS: This study was conducted with National Health Insurance Corporation data from 2014 to 2019. A total of 848,058 people were diagnosed with SMI in this period, and the same number of controls were established by matching by sex and age. A descriptive analysis was conducted on the sociodemographic characteristics of patients with SMI. Conditional logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the associations between comorbid physical disease in patients with SMI and those of the general population. SAS Enterprise Guide 7.1 (SAS Inc, Cary, NC, USA) were used to perform all statistical tests. RESULTS: The analysis revealed significant differences in medical insurance, income level, and Charlson Comorbidity Index weighted by chronic physical disease, between patients with SMI and the general population. Conditional logistic regression analysis between the two groups also revealed significant differences in eight chronic physical diseases except hypertensive disease. CONCLUSION: This study confirmed the vulnerability of patients with SMI to chronic physical diseases and we were able to identify chronic physical disease that were highly related to patients with SMI.

ABSTRACT

Chronic diseases are prevalent and impact sexual health and function. Screening for and managing sexual dysfunction in women with chronic diseases is important to optimize well-being and quality of life. Clinicians should consider the biopsychosocial impact of chronic diseases on sexual health, screen for direct and indirect factors, and identify medications that may cause dysfunction. The authors recommend a multidisciplinary approach to treat sexual dysfunction in women with chronic diseases, including sexual medicine specialists, sex therapists, and pelvic floor physical therapists when indicated. This review provides a practical approach to assessing and managing sexual dysfunction in women with chronic diseases.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic led to vast changes in working life and conditions in which we work. These changes may affect people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) differently. We aimed to describe the working situation of PwMS during the COVID-19 pandemic and the pandemic's impact on their working lives. METHODS: All individuals aged 20-50 listed in the Swedish Multiple Sclerosis Registry were invited to participate in an online survey in 2021. Closed and open-ended responses linked to individual-level register data were used in this exploratory mixed-methods study. Differences in the proportions reporting specific impacts were assessed with chi-square tests by sex, MS severity, education, and profession. The open-ended answers were analysed through content analysis. RESULTS: Over 8500 PwMS were invited (52% response rate). We included the 3887 respondents who answered questions about the impact of the pandemic on working life. Most (93.7%) reported being in paid work. An impact of the ongoing pandemic to one's daily occupation was reported by 26.2%, with different characteristics observed across the impacts. Four categories of type of answers were identified from the open-ended answers: Direct impact on one's occupation, Disclosing or concealing MS in the workplace, Worry and uncertainty, and Broader impact to life situation. CONCLUSIONS: PwMS navigated the pandemic by interrupting as well as continuing their working lives. Many PwMS reported that the pandemic did not affect their work situation. However, the reported impacts differed among the participants and a sense of uncertainty and worry was often underlying their statements. Lessons from the pandemic may support future work participation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammation is a common hallmark of many chronic diseases. Although exercise holds paramount importance in preventing and managing chronic diseases, adherence to exercise programs can be challenging for some patients. Consequently, there is a pressing need to explore alternative strategies to emulate the anti-inflammatory effects of exercise for chronic diseases. AIM OF REVIEW: This review explores the emerging role of green tea bioactive components as potential mitigators of chronic inflammation, offering insights into their capacity to mimic the beneficial effects of exercise. We propose that bioactive components in green tea are promising agents for suppressing chronic inflammation, suggesting their unique capability to replicate the health benefits of exercise. KEY SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS OF REVIEW: This review focuses on several key concepts, including chronic inflammation and its role in chronic diseases, the anti-inflammatory effects of regular exercise, and bioactive components in green tea responsible for its health benefits. It elaborates on scientific evidence supporting the anti-inflammatory properties of green tea bioactive components, such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and theorizes how these bioactive components might replicate the effects of exercise at a molecular level. Through a comprehensive analysis of current research, this review proposes a novel perspective on the application of green tea as a potential intervention strategy to suppress chronic inflammation, thereby extending the benefits akin to those achieved through exercise.
