ABSTRACT

Background: Cuproptosis, one of the most recently discovered forms of cell death, is induced by the disruption of copper binding to the mitochondrial respiratory acylation components. However, the mechanism underlying cuproptosis in uveal melanoma (UM) has not yet been adequately studied. Methods: RNA and clinical data were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Differentially expressed cuproptosis-related genes were identified by R software. A prognostic signature was constructed by applying LASSO regression and Cox regression models. The associations between the signature and the immune microenvironment, overall survival, and drug sensitivity were studied. In addition, qPCR and Western blotting were performed on UM cells and RPE cell lines to verify the expression levels of the genes encoding dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase (DLD) and dihydrolipoamide S-succinyltransferase (DLST) in UM cases. Results: Using a cuproptosis-related prognostic signature, UM samples were classified into high- and low-risk groups. A significant difference in overall survival between the two risk groups was evident. Receiver operating characteristic curves demonstrated that the signature is a reliable predictor of prognosis. Immune cell infiltration, drug sensitivity, and immune checkpoint expression were analysed. Significant immune difference between the two high-risk groups was found, and the high expression of immune checkpoints in high-risk groups suggests significant immunotherapy potential. In addition, drug sensitivity analysis experiments suggest that erlotinib may be a potential treatment for high-risk patients. The results of in vitro experiments confirmed that DLD and DLST had higher expression levels in UM cell lines. Conclusions: The prognostic signature developed in this study is a reliable biomarker for predicting the prognosis of UM and may serve as a tool for personalised treatment of patients with UM.

ABSTRACT

This study examined whether children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) have knowledge of binding principles (i.e., linking pronouns to their structurally licensed antecedent) during real-time sentence processing (cross-modal priming, real-time) and overt comprehension (sentence-picture matching, interpretative) and whether rate of speech impacted access to that knowledge. Fourteen children with DLD participated in two experiments, with sentences presented auditorily at either a regular or slow speech rate. Sentences were matched except to contain a pronoun, reflexive, or noun phrase (control) in the same syntactic position. Experiment (1) used a cross-modal picture priming paradigm to test real-time pronoun-antecedent linking abilities at both rates of speech. Children were instructed to make a binary decision during the uninterrupted auditory presentation of a sentence to a visually presented image (of the antecedent) at the offset of a pronoun, a reflexive, or a control noun. Response times between conditions (e.g., pronoun vs. control noun) were compared to determine whether participants showed evidence of facilitative priming (faster response times in the pronoun than control noun condition) at either speech rate. Experiment (2) used an auditory sentence-picture-matching task to test final comprehension of similar sentences containing a pronoun or reflexive. Accuracy was compared across both speech rates. For Experiment (1), children with DLD did not show evidence of real-time pronoun-antecedent priming at the regular speech rate. However, when sentences were slowed, they showed facilitative priming for the pronoun condition. For experiment (2), children with DLD performed at-chance when interpreting sentences with pronouns regardless of speech rate. While children with DLD have been shown to have difficulty processing sentences containing anaphors (such as pronouns), results suggest that this is not due to loss of intrinsic knowledge of binding principles. By slowing the rate of speech input, we showed that children with DLD do have access to that knowledge and can make the correct link during real-time processing between a pronoun and its structurally licensed antecedent (Experiment 1) but need more time to do so. However, the effect of slowed speech input does not extend to final comprehension (Experiment 2).

ABSTRACT

In conventional Deterministic Lateral Displacement (DLD), the migration behavior of a particle of specific size is determined by the critical diameter (Dc), which is predefined by the device's geometry. In contrast to the typical approach that alters the angle between the pillar array and fluid streamlines by modifying the geometrical parameters, this study introduces a novel perspective that focuses on changing the direction of the streamlines. The proposed technique offers a tunable DLD chip featuring a straightforward design that allows for easy fabrication. This chip features one completely horizontal pillar array with two bypass channels on the top and bottom of the DLD chamber. The width of these bypass channels changes linearly from their inlet to their outlet. Two design configurations are suggested for this chip, characterized by either parallel or unparallel slopes of the bypass channels. This chip is capable of generating a wide range of Dc values by manipulating two distinct control parameters. The first control parameter involves adjusting the flow rates in the two bypass channels. The second control parameter entails controlling the slopes of these bypass channels. Both of these parameters influence the direction of particle-carrying streamlines resulting in a change in the path-line of the particles. By changing the angle of streamlines with pillar array, the Dc can be tuned. Prior to determining the Dc for each case, an initial estimation was made using a Python script that utilized the streamline coordinates. Subsequently, through FEM modeling of the particle trajectories, precise Dc values were ascertained and compared with the estimated values, revealing minimal disparities. By adjusting the flow rate and slope of the bypass channels, maximum Dc ranges of 4-10 µm and 8-13 µm can be achieved, respectively. This innovative chip enables the attainment of Dc values spanning from 0.5 to 14 µm.

ABSTRACT

Deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) microfluidic devices work based on the streamlines created by an array of micro-posts. The configuration of pillars alters the isolation efficiency of these devices. The present paper optimizes the performance of a DLD device for isolating deformable circulating tumor cells. The input variables include cell diameter (d), Young's modulus ( E s ${E}_s$ ), Reynolds number (Re), and tan θ, where θ is the tilted angle of micro-posts. The output, which is the response of the system, is DLD. The numerical simulation results are employed to optimize the device using the response surface method, leading to the proposition of a correlation to estimate DLD as a function of input variables. It is demonstrated that the maximum and minimum impacts on cell lateral displacement correspond to E s ${E}_s$ and Re, respectively.

ABSTRACT

Dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase (DLD) deficiency is an ultra-rare autosomal-recessive inborn error of metabolism, affecting no less than five mitochondrial multienzyme complexes. With approximately 30 patients reported to date, DLD deficiency was associated with three major clinical presentations: an early-onset encephalopathic phenotype with metabolic acidosis, a predominantly hepatic presentation with liver failure, and a rare myopathic phenotype. To elucidate the demographic, phenotypic, and molecular characteristics of patients with DLD deficiency within the Israeli population, data were collected from metabolic disease specialists in four large tertiary medical centers in the center and south of Israel. Pediatric and adult patients with biallelic variants in DLD were included in the study. A total of 53 patients of 35 families were included in the cohort. Age at presentation ranged between birth and 10 years. Wide phenotypic variability was observed, from asymptomatic individuals in their sixth decade of life, to severe, neonatal-onset disease with devastating neurological sequelae. Six DLD variants were noted, the most common of which was the c.685G>T (p.G229C) variant in homozygous form (24/53 patients, 45.3%; 13/35 families), observed mostly among patients of Ashkenazi-Jewish descent, followed by the homozygous c.1436A>T (p.D479V) variant, found in 20 patients of Bedouin descent (37.7%; 16/35 families). Overall, patients did not necessarily present as one of the previously described distinct clinical phenotypes. DLD deficiency is a panethnic disorder, with significant phenotypic variability, and comprises a continuum, rather than three distinct clinical presentations.

Introduction: Degenerative lumbar disease (DLD) is a prevalent disorder that predominantly affects the elderly population, especially female. Extensive research has demonstrated that overweight individuals (categorized by body fat distribution) have a higher susceptibility to developing DLD and an increased risk of falling. However, there is limited research available on the standing balance and functional performance of overweight females with DLD. Aims: To determine the impact of body fat distribution on standing balance and functional performance in overweight females with DLD. Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated thirty females with DLD were categorized into three types of body fat distribution based on body mass index (BMI) and waist-hip ratio, specifically as android-type, gynoid-type, and normal weight groups. In addition, a control group of ten age-matched females with normal weight was recruited. The Visual Analogue Scale, Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire, Cobb angle (Determined using x-ray), and body composition (Determined using the InBody S10), were conducted only on the DLD groups. All participants were assessed standing balance in the anteroposterior and mediolateral directions. The functional assessments included timed-up-and-go and 5-times-sit-to-stand tests. Results: There were 10 people in each group. Android-type (Age = 65.00 ± 6.34 years; BMI = 26.87 ± 2.05 kg/m2), Gynoid-type (Age = 65.60 ± 4.99 years; BMI = 26.60 ± 1.75 kg/m2), Normal weight (Age = 65.70 ± 5.92 years; BMI = 22.35 ± 1.26 kg/m2), and Control (Age = 65.00 ± 5.23 years; BMI = 22.60 ± 1.12 kg/m2). The android-type group had higher body fat, visceral fat, and lower muscle mass (p < 0.05), along with an increased Cobb angle (p < 0.05). They showed greater ellipse area, total excursion, and mean distance in the anteroposterior direction (p < 0.05). During the functional performance assessments, the android-type group had longer durations in both the 5-times-sit-to-stand and timed-up-and-go tasks (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Our study found that android-type overweight individuals showed postural instability, reduced functional performance, and insufficient lower limb muscle strength and mass. These findings might help physical therapists in planning interventions, as they imply that patients with DLD may require specific types of standing balance training and lower extremities muscle-strengthening based on their body fat distribution. As in many other countries, baseline data concerning the linguistic development of bilingual children in Sweden are lacking, and suitable methods for identifying developmental language disorder (DLD) in bilinguals are lacking as well. This study presents reference data from 108 typically developing (TD) Turkish/Swedish-speaking children aged 4;0-8;1, for a range of language tasks developed specifically for the assessment of bilinguals (LITMUS test battery, COST Action IS0804). We report on different types of nonword repetition (NWR) tasks (language-specific and language-independent), receptive and expressive vocabulary (Cross-Linguistic Lexical Tasks, CLTs), and narrative macrostructure comprehension and production (Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives, MAIN) in Turkish, the children's home language, and in Swedish, the language of schooling and society. Performance was investigated in relation to age, language exposure, type of task, and (for NWR and narratives) vocabulary size. There was a positive development with age for all tasks, but effects of language exposure and vocabulary size differed between tasks. Six bilingual Turkish/Swedish children with DLD were individually compared to the TD children. TD/DLD performance overlapped substantially, particularly for NWR, and more so for the production than the comprehension tasks. Surprisingly, the discriminatory potential was poor for both language-specific and language-independent NWR. DLD case studies underscored the importance of interpreting language scores in relation to exposure history, and the need for an increased emphasis on functional language skills as reported by parents and teachers when assessing and diagnosing DLD in bilinguals.

Future industrial applications of microparticle fractionation with deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) devices are hindered by exceedingly low throughput rates. To enable the necessary high-volume flows, high flow velocities as well as high aspect ratios in DLD devices have to be investigated. However, no experimental studies have yet been conducted on the fractionation of bi-disperse suspensions containing particles below 10 µm with DLD at a Reynolds number (Re) above 60. Furthermore, devices with an aspect ratio of more than 4:1, which require advanced microfabrication, are not known in the DLD literature. Therefore, we developed a suitable process with deep reactive ion etching of silicon and anodic bonding of a glass lid to create pressure-resistant arrays. With a depth of 120 µm and a gap of 23 µm between posts, a high aspect ratio of 6:1 was realized, and devices were investigated using simulations and fractionation experiments. With the two-segmented array of 3° and 7° row shifts, critical diameters of 8 µm and 12 µm were calculated for low Re conditions, but it was already known that vortices behind the posts can shift these values to lower critical diameters. Suspensions with polystyrene particles in different combinations were injected with an overall flow rate of up to 15 mL/min, corresponding to Re values of up to 90. Suspensions containing particle combinations of 2 µm with 10 µm as well as 5 µm with 10 µm were successfully fractionated, even at the highest flow rate. Under these conditions, a slight widening of the displacement position was observed, but there was no further reduction in the critical size as it was for Re = 60. With an unprecedented fractionation throughput of nearly 1 L per hour, entirely new applications are being developed for chemical, pharmaceutical, and recycling technologies.

ABSTRACT

Spectroscopic studies (FT-IR, Raman, 1H, and 13C NMR, UV-VIS) of caffeic acid (CFA) and its conjugates, i.e., caftaric acid (CTA), cichoric acid (CA), and cynarin (CY), were carried out. The antioxidant activity of these compounds was determined by a superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity assay and the hydroxyl radical (HO•) inhibition assay. The cytotoxicity of these compounds was performed on DLD-1 cell lines. The molecules were theoretically modeled using the B3LYP-6-311++G(d,p) method. Aromaticity indexes (HOMA, I6, BAC, Aj), HOMO and LUMO orbital energies and reactivity descriptors, NBO electron charge distribution, EPS electrostatic potential maps, and theoretical IR and NMR spectra were calculated for the optimized model systems. The structural features of these compounds were discussed in terms of their biological activities.

Background: It is speculated that the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic-associated reduction in the prevalence of respiratory tract infections has influenced the incidence of asthma in young children. Objectives: We investigated an association between the reduction in viral infections and the reduction in asthma in young children. Methods: The subjects were infants born in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan, which began in February 2020. A questionnaire survey related to asthma and allergy was conducted at 18 months and 3 years of age. These results were compared to those of age-matched infants during the nonpandemic period. Results: There were no epidemics of viral infectious diseases until the target child was 18 months old. At 18 months, the incidence of asthma/asthmatic bronchitis diagnosed by physicians in pandemic children was significantly lower than that in nonpandemic children. In 3-year-olds, no marked difference was observed between nonpandemic infants and pandemic children, except for an increase in respiratory syncytial virus infection in pandemic children. In a comparative study of the same children at ages 18 months and 3 years, an increased prevalence of asthma/asthmatic bronchitis was observed in pandemic children. Furthermore, the incidence of asthma after respiratory syncytial virus infection in pandemic infants was significantly lower than that in nonpandemic children. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic-associated reduction in respiratory tract infections may have reduced the incidence of asthma in early childhood, and respiratory syncytial virus infection after 18 months of age had little effect on the onset of asthma. These results indicate the importance of preventing respiratory tract infections in early infancy.

ABSTRACT

The acquisition of numeral classifiers and their associated syntactic structures has been documented and studied in a broad range of East and Southeast Asian languages among typically-developing (TD) young speakers. However, little research has considered how classifiers are acquired by children with developmental language disorder (DLD). The current paper compares and analyzes the development of numeral classifier patterns among a set of Vietnamese speakers, TD and DLD, studied over three years, from kindergarten to second grade. The investigation highlights differences in the performance of children with TD and DLD and describes the areas of classifier use that seem to be most challenging. Children with DLD produced more errors of classifier omission in kindergarten, showed more random alternations in representational forms, and delays in the development of three element classifier structures. Findings are discussed in terms of future directions in the study of classifier use in Vietnamese speakers with DLD.

ABSTRACT

Exosomes, with diameters ranging from 30 to 150 nm, are saucer-shaped extracellular vesicles (EVs) secreted by various type of human cells. They are present in virtually all bodily fluids. Owing to their abundant nucleic acid and protein content, exosomes have emerged as promising biomarkers for noninvasive molecular diagnostics. However, the need for exosome separation purification presents tremendous technical challenges due to their minuscule size. In recent years, microfluidic technology has garnered substantial interest as a promising alternative capable of excellent separation performance, reduced reagent consumption, and lower overall device and operation costs. In this context, we hereby propose a novel microfluidic strategy based on thermally oxidized deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) arrays with tapered shapes to enhance separation performance. We have achieved more than 90% purity in both polystyrene nanoparticle and exosome experiments. The use of thermal oxidation also significantly reduces fabrication complexity by avoiding the use of high-precision lithography. Furthermore, in a simulation model, we attempt to integrate the use of dielectrophoresis (DEP) to overcome the size-based nature of DLD and distinguish particles that are close in size but differ in biochemical compositions (e.g., lipoproteins, exomeres, retroviruses). We believe the proposed strategy heralds a versatile and innovative platform poised to enhance exosome analysis across a spectrum of biochemical applications.

Introduction: Numerous studies have shown that children with developmental language disorder (DLD), in addition to oral language difficulties, exhibit impaired writing abilities. Their texts contain problems in grammar, organization, cohesion, and length of written output. However, most of these studies have been conducted with English speakers. English is characterized by complex phonological structure, opaque orthography, poor morphology and strict word order. The aim of this research is to observe the writing abilities of children with DLD in a language with simple phonological structure, transparent orthography, rich morphology and flexible word order like Spanish in the production of expository texts. Methods: Twenty-six children with DLD (mean age in months = 128.85) and 26 age-and sex-matched typically developing (TD) children (mean age in months = 124.61) wrote an expository text about their favorite animal. Results: In order to analyze how the two groups plan and encode written texts, we looked at word frequency and sentence structure, grammatical complexity and lexical density, and omissions and errors. Compared to the TD group, the children with DLD omitted more content words; made more errors with functional words, verb conjugation and inflectional morphemes, and made a large number of spelling errors. Moreover, they wrote fewer words, fewer sentences, and less structurally and lexically complex texts. Discussion: These results show that children with DLD who speak a transparent orthography language such as Spanish also have difficulties in most language areas when producing written texts. Our findings should be considered when planning and designing interventions.

Since the discovery of copper induces cell death(cuprotosis) in 2022, it has been one of the biggest research hotspots. cuprotosis related genes (CRGs) has been demonstrated to be a potential therapeutic target for cancer, however, the molecular mechanism of CRGs in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infected in DLBCL patients has not been reported yet. Therefore, our research objective is first to elucidate the mechanism and role of CRGs in COVID-19. Secondly, we conducted univariate and multivariate analysis and machine learning to screen for CRGs with common expression differences in COVID-19 and DLBCL. Finally, the functional role and immune mechanism of genes in DLBCL were confirmed through cell experiments and immune analysis. The research results show that CRGs play an important role in the occurrence and development of COVID-19. Univariate analysis and machine learning confirm that dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase (DLD) is the common key gene of COVID-19 and DLBCL. Inhibiting the expression of DLD can significantly inhibit the cycle progression and promote cell apoptosis of DLBCL cells and can target positive regulation of Lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1, also known as KDM1A) to inhibit the proliferation of DLBCL cells and promote cell apoptosis. The immune analysis results show that high-expression of DLD may reduce T cell-mediated anti-tumor immunity by regulating immune infiltration of CD8 + T cells and positively regulating immune checkpoints LAG3 and CD276. Reducing the expression of DLD can effectively enhance T cell-mediated anti-tumor immunity, thereby clearing cancer cells and preventing cancer growth. In conclusion, DLD may be a potential therapeutic target for COVID-19 infection in DLBCL patients. Our research provides a theoretical basis for improving the clinical treatment of COVID-19 infection in DLBCL.

BACKGROUND: Children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) and Reading Difficulties (RD) can show more peer relation problems depending on the informant. AIMS: (1) To explore bullying victims' categorization, evaluated by self- and peer-reports, in children with DLD and RD; and (2) to assess agreement rates between informants. METHOD AND PROCEDURES: Victimization was assessed using a self-report (EBIP-Q) and a peer-report sociogram (CESC) in a sample of 83 participants (9-12 years; 10.5 ± 1.1 years), comprising of DLD (n = 19), RD (n = 32), and Control (n = 32) groups. OUTCOMES AND RESULTS: We found a higher frequency of the rejected sociometric profile in the DLD and RD groups, a higher peer-reported victimization in the DLD group, and more severe self-reported victimization in the DLD and RD groups. Odds of being classified as victimized were higher for self-report except in the DLD group. Informants' agreement was high using the most restrictive EBIP-Q criterion (7 points) for both the Control and the RD groups, being non-significant for the DLD group regardless of the criteria used. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: We found a higher victimization risk in children with language difficulties, although self-assessment seems to under-detect children with DLD according to the agreement rates, pointing out the need to combine assessments and informants. WHAT DOES THIS PAPER ADD?: Several studies have shown that children with DLD or RD obtain higher scores of victimization and score lower on several scales of social skills with continuous data. Although continuous analyses are usual in research, professional decisions are usually based on cut-off criteria more than how high or low a score is in contrast to another group. This is one of the first works that analyses victimization following the cut-off criteria of self and peer assessments that professionals used in the school settings in children with DLD and RD. Our results will raise awareness among school professionals based on the evidence about the high risk of victimization, especially in children with DLD, and the implications of selecting between several measures of victimization, in this group of children. We think that our results would help to better detect and prevent bullying in schools for children with DLD.

Acetylation modification has a wide range of functional roles in almost all physiological processes, such as transcription and energy metabolism. Crotonylation modification is mainly involved in RNA processing, nucleic acid metabolism, chromosome assembly and gene expression, and it's found that there is a competitive relationship between crotonylation modification and acetylation modification. Previous study found that dihydrolipoyl dehydrogenase (DLD) was highly expressed in brown adipose tissue (BAT) of white adipose tissue browning model mice, suggesting that DLD is closely related to white fat browning. This study was performed by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR), Western blotting (WB), Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Immunofluorescence staining, JC-1 staining, Mito-Tracker Red CMXRos staining, Oil red O staining, Bodipy staining, HE staining, and Blood lipid quadruple test. The assay revealed that DLD promotes browning of white adipose tissue in mice. Cellularly, DLD was found to promote white adipocytes browning by activating mitochondrial function through the RAS/ERK pathway. Further studies revealed that the crotonylation modification and acetylation modification of DLD had mutual inhibitory effects. Meanwhile, DLD crotonylation promoted white adipocytes browning, while DLD acetylation did the opposite. Finally, protein interaction analysis and Co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) assays identified Sirtuin3 (SIRT3) as a decrotonylation and deacetylation modification enzyme of regulates DLD. In conclusion, DLD promotes browning of white adipocytes by activating mitochondrial function through crotonylation modification and the RAS/ERK pathway, providing a theoretical basis for the control and treatment of obesity, which is of great significance for the treatment of obesity and obesity-related diseases in the future.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to compare procedural learning skills between Spanish-speaking preschool children (ages 4 years to 4 years, 11 months) with developmental language disorder (DLD) and their chronologically matched typically developing (TD) peers. Using the serial reaction time (SRT) task, participants (30 children with DLD and 30 TD children) responded to visual stimuli in a sequenced manner over four blocks, followed by a random order block. The task assessed reaction time (RT) and accuracy. The results showed a significant interaction between group and block for RT and accuracy, with children with DLD exhibiting longer RTs and accuracy deficits across blocks. In contrast, the TD group showed higher RT efficiency and accuracy in the sequential blocks and, as expected, decreased performance in the random block according to the experimental manipulation. Overall, the results of this investigation suggest that there was no implicit learning in the DLD group, as indicated by the SRT task paradigms of procedural memory. These findings align with some aspects of the procedural deficit hypothesis (PDH), which suggests that linguistic deficits in the DLD population may derive from a deficit in sequential learning from the procedural memory system domain in the Spanish context.

ABSTRACT

To non-invasively monitor personal biological and environmental samples in Internet of Things (IoT)-based wearable microfluidic sensing applications, the particle size could be key to sensing, which emphasizes the need for particle size fractionation. Deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) is a microfluidic structure that has shown great potential for the size fractionation of micro- and nano-sized particles. This paper introduces a new externally balanced multi-section cascade DLD approach with a section-scaling technique aimed at expanding the dynamic range of particle size separation. To analyze the design tradeoffs of this new approach, a robust model that also accounts for practical fabrication limits is presented, enabling designers to visualize compromises between the overall device size and the achievement of various performance goals. Furthermore, results show that a wide variety of size fractionation ranges and size separation resolutions can be achieved by cascading multiple sections of an increasingly smaller gap size and critical separation dimension. Model results based on DLD theoretical equations are first presented, followed by model results that apply the scaling restrictions associated with the second order of effects, including practical fabrication limits, the gap/pillar size ratio, and pillar shape.

ABSTRACT

Procedural circuit Deficit Hypothesis (PDH) of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) predicts problems with learning and retention of grammar. Twenty 7- to 9-year-old Cantonese-speaking children with DLD and their typically developing (TD) age peers participated in a syntactic priming task that was given in two sessions one week apart. Production of Indirect Object Relative Clause (IORC) was tested using a probe test before and after the priming task, and one week later. The study involved two cycles of learning and retention, and two levels of prior knowledge. Bayesian linear mixed effects modelling was used for data analysis. Children with DLD learned, and possibly retained, IORC less well than TD children after age, working memory and general grammatical knowledge were controlled for. No interaction effects were significant, meaning that cycle and prior knowledge affected both groups similarly in learning and retention. Results were discussed in relation to PDH and the Complementary Learning Systems Theory.
