ABSTRACT

Hydrolysed proteins have been shown to be potential ingredients in cat diets due to their high digestibility, presence of bioactive peptides, and relatively low antigenicity. The effects of the substitution of conventional low ash poultry byproduct meal (PBM) with hydrolysed poultry byproduct meal (HPM) as a protein source were evaluated in extruded cat diets. Five diets with similar nutrient contents were formulated: a control (CO) diet based on PBM and 4 diets with different inclusions of HPM (5%, 10%, 20%, and 30%, on an as-fed basis) replacing PBM as the protein source. The total tract apparent digestibility (CTTAD) of nutrients, faecal characteristics and microbial fermentation products, urine production and pH, nitrogen balance and urea renal excretion were evaluated using 30 healthy cats (15 males and 15 females; 4.18 ± 0.86 kg; 4.17 ± 1.38 years old), with 6 cats per diet in a complete randomised block design. When significant differences were found with the F test, the effects were evaluated by polynomial contrasts according to HPM inclusion (p < 0.05). The CTTADs of DM (89 ± 0.41%), CP (90 ± 0.36%), fat (93 ± 0.41%) and gross energy (90 ± 0.33%) were similar among treatments (p > 0.05). The faecal production, score, short-chain fatty acids and ammonia concentration were similar among treatments (p > 0.05). Isobutyric, isovaleric, valeric, and total branched-chain fatty acid contents increased quadratically (p < 0.05), with the highest level in the faeces of cats fed the diet with 20% HPM. Lactate concentration in faeces increased linearly with the inclusion of HPM (p < 0.05). Urine characteristics and urea renal excretion did not differ among treatments (p > 0.05). At 10% inclusion, HPM tended to increase the nitrogen retention of cats (p = 0.083), which may reflect the higher tryptophan, methionine, lysine, and available lysine contents of HPM in comparison to PBM. The inclusion of up to 30% HPM can be considered in cat formulations without affecting nutrient digestibility or faecal and urine characteristics. HPM tended to increase nitrogen retention and increased branched-chain fatty acids in faeces, aspects which deserves further studies.

ABSTRACT

A 4-month-old male Himalayan cat presented with clinical signs of acute lethargy and motor incoordination after being treated with amitraz for parasite control. On clinical examination, the patient was lethargic and ataxic with severe pulicosis, hypothermia, pale mucous membranes, bradycardia, weak femoral pulses, hyperglycemia, and bilateral mydriasis. Blood tests revealed non-regenerative hypochromic microcytic anemia. Serum alanine levels were elevated tenfold. The patient received supportive treatment with atipamezole (an α2-adrenergic antagonist) at a dose of 0.1 mg/kg intramuscularly. After 24 h of hospitalization and constant monitoring, the patient recovered and was discharged. The published literature showed that the active ingredient amitraz is effective in the treatment of some parasitic diseases in cats, such as scabies and demodicosis; therefore, it is still used for this purpose. Given the small therapeutic margin of this insecticide, veterinarians should caution owners about its potential toxicity. This report emphasized the significance of amitraz intoxication in feline species and the success of the treatment, which should be initiated in the first hour after intoxication.

ABSTRACT

Antimicrobial resistance is a threat to public health. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus represents a priority for the implementation of preventive measures. The objective was to isolate S. aureus in humans, animals, and animal health care environment, and to characterize the genotypic and phenotypic profile of antimicrobial resistance in these isolates. We isolated S. aureus from staff, animals, and environment of a veterinary hospital, and identified their antimicrobial resistance profiles. Samples were collected from 20 humans, 13 animals, 14 surfaces, 8 mobile phones, and 7 veterinarians' stethoscopes by using sterile swabs. S. aureus was isolated by culturing on mannitol salt agar and preliminary identification was done by Gram staining and catalase test. Subsequently, a polymerase chain reaction was performed for species confirmation and investigating their antimicrobial-resistant genotypic profiles. Phenotypic profiles of resistant isolates were determined using the disk-diffusion technique. Ten S. aureus isolates were recovered from 5/20 humans (25%), it was also recovered from 2/13 animals (15.38%), including 1 dog and 1 cat, and from 1/14 of surfaces (7.14%). The oxacillin-susceptible mecA-positive Staphylococcus aureus phenotype was identified in a feline. Most of the isolates carried at least two resistance genes of different antimicrobial classes, with 90% (9/10) presenting the gene blaZ, with 10% (1/10) presenting the gene mecA, 20% (2/10) presenting tet38, 10% (1/10) presenting tetM, 90% (9/10) presenting norA, 50% (5/10) presenting norC, 10% (1/10) presenting ermA, and 60% (6/10) presenting ermB. In antibiograms, resistance to penicillin was identified in all the isolates, resistance to erythromycin was identified in 80% (8/10), and all the isolate's resistance to erythromycin presented erythromycin-induced resistance to clindamycin. Antimicrobial resistance in the veterinary hospital requires attention due to the risk of interspecies transmission, gene transfer between bacteria that colonize companion animals and humans and, can make antimicrobial therapy difficult.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to characterize the domestic cat population of Uruguay in relation to breed, coat color, hair length, lifestyle (indoor vs. outdoor), age, sex, and spay/neuter status according to a survey completed by their owners or guardians. An online survey, distributed to residents of Uruguay, was completed in full by 2561 cat guardians. Descriptive statistics and Chi-squared tests were performed. The population of cats with guardians in Uruguay is characterized by the following data: higher frequency of female cats (53%), most of the cats were between two and six years old (49%), most of them were neutered (84%, mainly those older than one year of age), most of them have outdoor access (87%), a very low percentage (6%) are purebred (Siamese being the most frequent: 86%), and within the non-pure breeds, short hair cats were the most frequent (79%). This study, in addition to expanding the information on the characteristics of cats with guardians from other countries and continents, is the first study in Latin America to describe some key demographic aspects such as cat breeds, coat color, hair length, lifestyles, and frequency by age, sex, and spay/neuter status (spayed/neutered or not) at the country level.

ABSTRACT

Several affections that affect domestic cats, such as retroviruses, do not have effective treatment. This fact makes the study of these diseases relevant, due to the low healing efficacy and mostly lifelong character. Among the retroviruses that most affect felines are feline immunodeficiency (FIV) and feline leukemia (FeLV). The diagnosis is obtained by associating the clinical examination, which is generally inconclusive, with complementary laboratory tests. Molecular tests, such as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), are efficient for proviral DNA detection and can be used in the diagnostic routine. Therefore, this study aimed to prove the efficiency of the molecular protocol Nested PCR to diagnose FIV and FeLV. For this purpose, blood and/ or bone marrow samples from 41 domestic cats were collected through venipuncture or bone marrow and sent to the Oncells Biotechnology laboratory. The following primer pairs were adopted for the Nested PCR: FF1 and FF2 for the first cycle, with an amplicon of 1325bp for FIV and 490bp for FeLV. For the second, the combination F14, F15, FE4, and FE7 was used, with an amplicon of 1138bp for FIV and 306bp for FeLV. The bands corresponding to those expected for FeLV were detected by observing the gels; however, in addition to other non-specific bands, bands corresponding to FIV were not observed. The results confirm the ability to detect the FeLV pathogen by the technique employed. Nevertheless new protocol adjustments are required.

ABSTRACT

Utilizing metabolomics, a tool for measuring and characterizing low-molecular-weight substances (LMWs), to identify eventual changes in response to dietary intervention is novel in cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD), a condition characterized by retention of uremic solutes. This study aims to assess the serum metabolomic profile of cats in early stages of CKD and to compare the serum metabolomic of CKD cats after 60 days of a renal diet to evaluate the effect of dietary intervention on these metabolites. Twenty-five domestic cats were included in the study. Fifteen cats with CKD stages 1 (n = 6) and 2 (n = 9) according to the International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) were included in the renal groups, and a control group consisting of 10 cats was included. All animals were enrolled on a maintenance diet for 30 days before the experimental period. The metabolomics analysis was performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was performed on Metaboanalyst 4.0 software. Forty-three metabolites were identified. Citric acid and monostearin were altered in the CKD2 group when compared to CKD1 and the control group at T0. A total of seven serum metabolites differed after 60 days of the renal diet: glycine, fructose, glutamic acid, arachidonic acid, stearic acid, creatinine, and urea. Changes were seen in the serum metabolomic profile after 60 days of the renal diet, and some of the metabolites that changed in response to the diet have beneficial effects on health. Overall, metabolomics markers have the potential to identify early stages of CKD, providing insights into the possible pathophysiologic processes that contribute to the development and progression of CKD.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In Brazil, zoonotic sporotrichosis became a national public health problem, with thousands of cases in the last decade in several regions of the country. In this context, health education activities are critical, especially in promoting early diagnosis and access to proper health care in sporotrichosis hyperendemic areas. Therefore, we report the implementation of a public specialised reference service (SRS) for diagnosis and treatment of sporotrichosis in southern Brazil. We evaluated the impact of the SRS on diagnostic confirmation and speed of diagnosis. METHODS: The SRS was implemented in Rio Grande City. We implemented a public service to promote the correct diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of human sporotrichosis cases. To study the impact of implementing SRS, the annual number of cases and the period between the appearance of lesions until diagnosis were compared, using prior data and that post-implementation. RESULTS: The implementation of the SRS directly benefited almost 50 patients in only four years, with the collaboration of almost 50% of the local health groups, together with an increase of more than 200% in diagnosis confirmation and speed of diagnosis, showing the reach, impact and importance of the SRS. CONCLUSION: The impact on the individual and collective health of the local population highlights the value of this public health approach in facing the epidemiological threat of zoonotic sporotrichosis.

ABSTRACT

Sporotrichosis is a subacute or chronic fungal disease caused by the Sporothrix fungal complex. It consists of a zoonotic disease in which the infection occurs from the traumatic inoculation of the fungus in cutaneous or subcutaneous tissue, with the domestic feline being the animal most susceptible to the disease. Cats play an important epidemiological role in the transmission and spread of the disease due to their habits and the large amount of fungal microorganisms they carry in exudative skin lesions, thus acting as the main source of infection and having the greatest potential for transmissibility. It is an underreported mycosis and most commonly diagnosed in Rio de Janeiro, but the disease is currently gaining importance in several regions of Brazil, where an increasing number of cases in animals and humans have been observed. In view of this, the present work presents a bibliographic review on the subject, as well as the report of a clinical case of a one-year-old female cat with sporotrichosis and with the secondary development of another zoonosis important forpublic health - dermatophytosis, with in order to alert about the importance of mycoticinfections in felines for unique health and highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and the collaboration and commitment of the tutor for the treatment of diseases.

ABSTRACT

Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora spp. are protozoa that have a significant impact on animal health due to the diseases they cause in domestic and wild animals. The aim of the present study was to investigate the presence of antibodies against T. gondii and Neospora spp. in cats from northern Brazil. Serum samples were collected from 180 cats in the municipality of Araguaína, Tocantins and used to evaluate the presence of anti-T. gondii and anti-Neospora spp. antibodies using the indirect fluorescent antibody test, with a cutoff of 1:64 and 1:25, respectively. The association between infection and individual animal characteristics (age, sex, origin, breed, and clinical signs) was tested using univariate analysis, followed by multivariate logistic regression. We found that 48.3% (87/180) of the animals had anti-T. gondii (95% CI: 40.8%55.90%) and 3.9% (7/180) had anti-Neospora spp. (95% CI: 1.6%7.8%) antibodies. There was no association between age, sex, breed origin, clinical signs, and seropositivity for T. gondii. Cats of defined breeds were more likely to be infected by Neospora spp. (OR = 10.7). Therefore, we found a high rate of seropositivity for T. gondii and a high rate of occurrence of Neospora infections in cats from the Araguaína region. The exposure of the feline population to the studied coccidia indicates the need to monitor the feline population for these infections and underscores the importance of effective sanitary measures against such pathogens.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Fibrosarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal neoplasm originating from fibroblasts, which is specifically located in the skin tissue, subcutaneous tissue and oral cavity. Surgical resection of the tumor with a safety margin is known as the main form of treatment. The main form of metastasis is the hematogenous route, reaching the lungs, and less common in regional lymph nodes. histopathological analysis is the diagnostic test of choice for defining the type of tumor and its graduation. Imaging exams are essential in the staging of neoplasms and surgical planning. Ultrasonography and radiography are the most used methods and offer great support to veterinary medical oncology. The radiographic exam allows the finding of bone neoformations or other alterations such as the increase in soft tissue volume, fatty infiltration, and cavitations with gas or fluid. The ultrasound examination allows knowledge about the echotexture, organization, and location of the soft tissue lesion. Three cats with fibrosarcoma in the thoracic limb underwent lesion-specific radiography and ultrasound. The radiographic findings of fibrosarcomas were increased soft tissue radiopacity volume, without bone involvement. And the ultrasonographic findings were gross echotexture lesions, highly heterogeneous. Cytological and histopathological examinations were performed for definitive diagnosis. The present report aims to describe the radiographic and ultrasonographic findings of fibrosarcoma in the thoracic limb of three cats.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The occurrence of cutaneous malignant melanoma in exotic felids is poorly reported. A 6-year-old, unneutered, solitary, female white Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris), living in a suitable environment, was evaluated for the presence of a mass near the left eye. Histopathology of the referred biopsy showed the presence of melanocytes with anaplastic features (pleomorphism, cytomegaly, karyomegaly, binucleation), hemorrhagic area and fibrinous inflammatory focus. The histopathological diagnosis was malignant melanoma. Two months after diagnosis, the tigress manifested considerable deterioration with weight loss and the presence of a round mass on the neck. At that time, because of its size, the melanoma totally obstructed vision. Based on this, and for humane reasons, the animal was euthanized. At the time of necropsy, metastasis was observed in the lungs, pleura and kidneys. This case demonstrates the importance of raising awareness of melanomas in underreported species.

Thus, the objective of this article is to provide information about obesity, to elucidate risk factors, diagnosis, treatment, as well as to highlight ways of environmental enrichment and obesity prevention. Obesity has a multifactorial origin and can contribute to the emergence of comorbidities. The diagnosis is based on nutritional assessment and identification of the degree of obesity. For this there are some techniques, such as weight assessment, classification of the body condition score (ECC), lean mass index (IMM), dual energy x-rays (DEXA), computed tomography, magnetic resonance and methods that help to estimate the feline body mass index and fat percentage. The treatment consists of nutritional planning. To do this, the diet must be changed to a weight loss food with reduced energy density, low fat content and high protein and fiber content. It is essential that there is a fortnightly or monthly return of the patient to check the speed of loss and If it is necessary to make adjustments to the diet. In addition to the diet, it is essential to introduce environmental enrichment to increase physical activity. Given the above, it is of great importance to carry out the treatment for obesity, in addition to making tutors aware of the correct environmental and nutritional management, in order to promote quality of life for these animals.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Leptospira spp. and Brucella abortus are bacterial pathogens that can infect humans and animals. The present study aimed to detect anti-Leptospira and anti-B. abortus antibodies and verified the presence of factors associated with seropositivity in cats. One hundred and eighty serum samples were collected from domestic cats (Felis silvestris catus) from the urban area of the municipality of Araguaína-Tocantins by phlebocentesis of the cephalic and jugular veins. The samples were subjected to detection of anti-Leptospira and anti-B.abortus antibodies, respectively, by microscopic seroagglutination and buffered acidified antigen testing, followed by confirmation by the 2-mercaptoethanol test and slow seroagglutination in tubes. Data from the epidemiological questionnaire (the age, sex, origin, breed, and presence of clinical signs) were analyzed using Epi Info® software with seropositivity data found to search for associated factors using the chi-square test. In the present study, the prevalence of Leptospira spp. was 5.56% (10/180). However, no sample was reactive to B. abortus. None of the studied variables were associated with seropositivity for the pathogens evaluated. Therefore, there is contact between Leptospira spp. and the feline population of the municipality, indicating the possibility of the circulation of pathogenic serovars and that the presence of anti-Leptospira antibodies does not depend on the variables analyzed.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Animals that have a habit of feeding on reptiles or amphibians are more susceptible. It mainly affects the liver and bile ducts, but it can eventually be found also in the small intestine, pancreatic ducts, lungs and other tissues. Pathophysiology includes chronic cholangitis, which may extend and affect the liver parenchyma and culminate in cholangiohepatitis, biliary fibrosis, cirrhosis and biliary obstruction. Clinical signs vary according to the severity of the case and the duration of the infection. Clinical manifestations include anorexia, lethargy, weight loss, hepatomegaly, bloating and vomiting, and jaundice and alteration of stool consistency may also occur. Adult cats, homeless or homeless with access to the street who have hunting habits, are more predisposed. The definitive diagnosis can be made through parasitological research and presence of eggs in coproparasitological analysis, by identifying eggs in the bile and more often through hepatic histopathology. Treatment consists of the use of anthelmintics, the most effective of which is praziquantel. In addition, preventive measures must be adopted, such as preventing cats from having access to intermediate hosts. The present report consists of the coproparasitological diagnosis of platinosomosis in two domestic cats, in the municipality of Pelotas, RS, Brazil.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The metabolic peculiarities of felines favor an intoxication. Fifty healthy female cats were divided into five groups: PG (placebo group), G2 (cefazolin), G3 (ceftriaxone), G4 (enrofloxacin) and G5 (ampicillin) were used. The parameters evaluated were: total expired carbon dioxide (ETCO2), oxygen saturation in hemoglobin (SpO2), heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), body temperature (BT), systolic, mean and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, mBP and DBP) by invasive method, at T0, 5 (T5), 10 (T10), 15 (T15), 20 (T20), 25 (T25) and 30 (T30) minutes after administration of the treatments. HR presented reduction in G2 compared to PG at all times, except T20, and in G4, T25 and T30 were lower than the T0 values (P<0.05). BT showed increase in the G3 at T0 and T5 and all groups showed reduction in the values of BT relative to T0 (P<0.05). ETCO2 increased in G2 and G5 at all times compared to PG (P<0.05) and there were no differences among the times within each group. It was concluded that ceftriaxone is safer for the prophylactic antimicrobial use in cats, however the other antimicrobials are also indicated, because all the parameters, in all groups, basically did not change over the study and when this occurs it remains in reference interval.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The environment provided for animals in captivity is less complex than its natural habitat, which generates a stressful condition. Environmental enrichment tries to meet the animals' ethological and psychological needs. This paper aims to evaluate the effect of different environmental enrichment methods on the jaguarundi (Herpailurus yagouaroundi; É Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1803) behavior kept in captivity at Fundação Ecológica e Zoobotânico de Brusque - SC [Brusque Ecological and Zoobotanical Foundation - SC]. Four environmental enrichments were introduced, and the behaviors expressed by the animal were observed in three stages (pre-enrichment, during-enrichment, and post-enrichment), totaling 55 h. Differences in behaviors were tested using the Mann-Whitney test. After the "sensory enrichment" there was a decrease in the behaviors of Maintenance, Calm, and Inactive with an increase in the expression of Exploratory behaviors. On the other hand, both "physical enrichments" reduced the expression of Exploratory and Locomotion behaviors, with an increase of Inactive and Calm. The "occupational/nutritional enrichment" increased the Inactive behaviors reducing Locomotion and Pacing. These results reinforce that environmental enrichments in captivity are useful to reduce stress and increase animal well being.
