ABSTRACT

Owing to the influence of human activities, the issue of heavy metal pollution in farmland soil at the urban-rural fringe has become increasingly prominent. An accurate understanding of the characteristics of soil-crop heavy metal pollution in these areas is of great significance for ensuring food safety and promoting social sustainable development. Most of the existing studies rely on small-scale field monitoring, but research at the national level has not effectively captured the unique pollution dynamics of this urban-rural interface. Based on the published literature, the present study investigated the status of heavy metal pollution in the soil-crop system within China's urban-rural fringe through Meta-analysis. On this basis, the study evaluated the risks to human health associated with heavy metals in major crops in a given region. The results showed that heavy metals were accumulated in farmland soil in the urban-rural fringe of China, especially in Cd (Igeo = 0.89) pollution, and its distinct spatial heterogeneity patterns emerged. When considering different types of cultivated land, paddy fields and irrigated land exhibited a higher tendency of heavy metal accumulation. From the varying urbanization levels, the accumulation of heavy metals in soils of small and medium-sized cities was more obvious. For crops in the urban-rural fringe, Cd and Pb had the highest exceedance rate in rice (28.25% and 39.64%) and wheat (27.72% and 42.72%). The health risk assessment results of heavy metals in crops showed that Cd was the main element that posed human health risks, which had some degree of non-carcinogenic risk and unacceptable carcinogenic risk to both children and adults.

ABSTRACT

This work presents TTFDNet, a transformer-based and transfer learning network for end-to-end depth estimation from single-frame fringe patterns in fringe projection profilometry. TTFDNet features a precise contour and coarse depth (PCCD) pre-processor, a global multi-dimensional fusion (GMDF) module and a progressive depth extractor (PDE). It utilizes transfer learning through fringe structure consistency evaluation (FSCE) to leverage the transformer's benefits even on a small dataset. Tested on 208 scenes, the model achieved a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.00372 mm, outperforming Unet (0.03458 mm) models, PDE (0.01063 mm) and PCTNet (0.00518 mm). It demonstrated precise measurement capabilities with deviations of ~90 µm for a 25.4 mm radius ball and ~6 µm for a 20 mm thick metal part. Additionally, TTFDNet showed excellent generalization and robustness in dynamic reconstruction and varied imaging conditions, making it appropriate for practical applications in manufacturing, automation and computer vision.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The Open Payments Program (OPP), established in 2013 under the Sunshine Act, mandated medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers to submit records of financial incentives given to physicians for public availability. The study aims to characterize the gap in real general and real research payments between man and woman urologists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study sample included all urologists in the United States who received at least one general or research payment in the OPP database from 2015 to 2021. Recipients were identified using the National Provider Identifier and National Downloadable File datasets. Payments were analyzed by geography, year, payment type, and years since graduation. Multivariable analysis on odds of being in above the median in terms of money received was done with gender as a covariate. This analysis was also completed for all academic urologists. RESULTS: There was a total of 15,980 urologists; 13.6% were woman, and 86.4% were man. Compared to man urologists, woman urologists were less likely to be in the top half of total payments received (odds ratio [OR] 0.62) when adjusted for other variables. When looking at academic urologists, 18.1% were woman and 81.9% were man. However, woman academic urologists were even less likely to be in the top 50% of payments received (OR 0.55). CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first to characterize the difference in industry payments between man and woman urologists. The results should be utilized to educate physicians and industry, in order to achieve equitable engagement and funding for woman urologists.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The nursing shortage is driven, in part, by the critical shortage of nursing faculty. Consequently, qualified potential nursing students are being turned away from nursing schools each year. The preeminent issue influencing the United States nurse faculty workforce shortage is salary; financial compensation is higher in clinical and private-sector settings than educational settings. The purpose of this study is to describe current full-time nurse faculty salary, sources of income, and perceived need for more income, as well as the feasibility and acceptability of research focused on full-time nurse faculty salaries, so to guide future nursing faculty workforce research. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional study design, full-time nursing faculty working in a Midwestern state in the United States completed a survey inclusive of fixed choice and free text response options focused on income (individual gross, faculty, and secondary), demographics, and feasibility/acceptability of the survey instrument. Descriptive statistics were used to describe salary, sources of income, and perceived need for additional income. Feasibility and acceptability were evaluated by descriptive statistics examining three feasibility and acceptability questions, and by comparing demographic differences between participants who answered income questions compared to those who did not using t tests, x2 tests, and Wilcoxon signed rank tests. RESULTS: One hundred and eighty-three full-time nurse faculty completed the survey in six weeks, representing 27% of the full-time nurse faculty workforce in the state. Over half of participants, 57%, reported having another job(s) in addition to their full-time faculty position to support basic living expenses. Most respondents reported willingness to share financial/salary data and viewed the survey to be acceptable. CONCLUSIONS: Research focused on nursing faculty salaries was feasible and acceptable to those who chose to participate in the study. Perceived income needs may be an important factor driving career decisions for nursing faculty. Future research should focus on delineating how salary influences the decision to enter or stay in the nursing faculty workforce. Further, this study can inform policy recommendations on how to best measure and report nurse faculty salary and the gap between clinical salaries and faculty salaries.

ABSTRACT

Grating (moiré) interferometry is one of the well-known methods for full-field in-plane displacement and strain measurement. There are many design solutions for grating interferometers, including systems with a microinterferometric waveguide head. This article proposes a modification to the conventional waveguide interferometer head, enabling the implementation of a polarization fringe phase shift for automatic fringe pattern analysis. This article presents both the theoretical considerations associated with the proposed solution and its experimental verification, along with the concept of in-plane displacement/strain sensing using the described head.

ABSTRACT

The precision requirements for aeroengine blade machining are exceedingly stringent. This study aims to improve the accuracy of existing aeroengine blade measurement methods while achieving comprehensive measurement. Therefore, this study proposes a new concentric ring calibration method and designs a multi-layer concentric ring calibration plate. The effectiveness of this calibration method was verified through actual testing of standard ball gauges. Compared with the checkerboard-grid calibration method, the average deviation of the multilayer concentric ring calibration method for measuring the center distance of the standard sphere is 0.02352, which improves the measurement accuracy by 3-4 times. On the basis of multi-layer concentric ring calibration, this study builds a fringe projection profiler based on the three-frequency twelve-step phase shift method. Compared with the CMM, the average deviation of the blade chord length measured by this solution is 0.064, which meets the measurement index requirements of aeroengine fan blades.

ABSTRACT

The field of computer vision has been focusing on achieving accurate three-dimensional (3D) object representations from a single two-dimensional (2D) image through deep artificial neural networks. Recent advancements in 3D shape reconstruction techniques that combine structured light and deep learning show promise in acquiring high-quality geometric information about object surfaces. This paper introduces a new single-shot 3D shape reconstruction method that uses a nonlinear fringe transformation approach through both supervised and unsupervised learning networks. In this method, a deep learning network learns to convert a grayscale fringe input into multiple phase-shifted fringe outputs with different frequencies, which act as an intermediate result for the subsequent 3D reconstruction process using the structured-light fringe projection profilometry technique. Experiments have been conducted to validate the practicality and robustness of the proposed technique. The experimental results demonstrate that the unsupervised learning approach using a deep convolutional generative adversarial network (DCGAN) is superior to the supervised learning approach using UNet in image-to-image generation. The proposed technique's ability to accurately reconstruct 3D shapes of objects using only a single fringe image opens up vast opportunities for its application across diverse real-world scenarios.

ABSTRACT

Fringe projection profilometry (FPP) is widely used for high-accuracy 3D imaging. However, employing multiple sets of fringe patterns ensures 3D reconstruction accuracy while inevitably constraining the measurement speed. Conventional dual-frequency FPP reduces the number of fringe patterns for one reconstruction to six or fewer, but the highest period-number of fringe patterns generally is limited because of phase errors. Deep learning makes depth estimation from fringe images possible. Inspired by unsupervised monocular depth estimation, this paper proposes a novel, weakly supervised method of depth estimation for single-camera FPP. The trained network can estimate the depth from three frames of 64-period fringe images. The proposed method is more efficient in terms of fringe pattern efficiency by at least 50% compared to conventional FPP. The experimental results show that the method achieves competitive accuracy compared to the supervised method and is significantly superior to the conventional dual-frequency methods.

Amid global industrialization and urbanization, mountainous rural settlements, especially those in metropolitan fringe area, are experiencing significant spatial changes in location and scale. This study takes Pingnan County, Fujian Province, China, as an example. Utilizing land use data and employing methods including standard deviation ellipse, average nearest neighbor index, kernel density estimation, spatial hotspot detection, binary logistic regression model, and Geodetector, this study aims to scientifically identify the spatial pattern characteristics and influencing factors of its settlements. The results show that: (1) The spatial distribution of settlements in Pingnan County is biased toward the southern part of the county; the center of settlement's spatial distribution is located south of the junction of Gufeng Town and Pingcheng Town; the spatial distribution trend of settlements is north-east-southwest. Settlements are generally aggregated, and the aggregation degree of Gufeng Town is obviously lower than that of other towns. (2) The density distribution of settlements presents a "core-periphery" structure and a "north-south linear" structure in space; the spatial pattern characteristics show high-density, large patches in Gufeng Town, high-density, small patches in Changqiao Town, Tangkou Town and Gantang Town, and medium-density or low-density, small patches in other towns. (3) Settlement location is mainly affected by the elevation, distance to cultivated land, and distance to main roads, while settlement scale is mainly affected by slope, relief degree of land surface, and distance to urban centers. The interaction between these factors exhibits enhancement effects, with natural terrain and location conditions exerting the most prominent influence. These findings underscore the strong constraints posed by natural topography on mountainous rural settlements in metropolitan fringe areas, coupled with a more pronounced influence from socio-economic factors. The study's results hold significant implications for optimizing the layout of such settlements, guiding land spatial planning, and promoting rural revitalization.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Emergency departments globally are overburdened, and emergency medicine residency is losing popularity among students and physicians. This raises concerns about the collapse of a life-saving system. Our goal was to identify the key workforce reasoning and question medical staff employment behavior. METHODS: This was a prospective cross-sectional study. In December 2022, medical students and pre-residency doctors in Slovenia were invited to complete a web-based questionnaire. The data were analyzed using T-test, chi-square test, Mann‒Whitney-Wilcoxon tests, and principal component analysis. Open-ended questions were hand-categorized. RESULTS: There were 686 participatns who clicked on the first page and 436 of those finished the survey. 4% of participants gave a clear positive response, while 11% responded positively regarding their decision to pursue emergency medicine residency. The popularity of emergency medicine decreases significantly among recent medical school graduates upon their initial employment. People who choose emergency medicine are less concerned about its complexity and pressure compared to others. Most respondents preferred 12-hour shift lengths. The preferred base salary range for residents was I$ 3623-4529, and for specialists, it was I$ 5435-6341. The sample's primary personal priorities are achieving a satisfactory work-life balance, earning respect from colleagues, and engaging in academic activities. Factors that attract individuals to choose emergency medicine include high hourly wages, establishment of standards and norms, and reduced working hours. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that enhancing compensation, establishing achievable standards and norms, facilitating a beneficial work-life equilibrium, providing assistance with initial property acquisition, stimulating participation in deficit residency programs, fostering collegiality among peers, restricting the duration of shifts, and enabling pension accrual may be imperative in attracting more individuals to pursue emergency medicine residency.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Midwives in Connecticut lack resources for current, state-specific data regarding compensation, benefits, work hours, and scope of practice. The primary purpose of this study was to provide detailed information about the work and services provided by midwives in Connecticut and how they are compensated. METHODS: Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) licensed in Connecticut were recruited for a 53-question online survey between October 2021 and February 2022. The survey included topics such as compensation, benefits, practice patterns, and precepting. RESULTS: For full-time salaried CNMs in Connecticut, compensation was higher than the national average for midwives. A majority of CNMs in the state work 40 hours per week or less in physician-owned private practices and are preceptors. DISCUSSION: For midwives planning to negotiate contracts in Connecticut, this report provides important information to ensure fair compensation and work hours. The survey also serves as a roadmap for midwives in other states who wish to collect and disseminate similar workforce data.

ABSTRACT

Urban-rural integration is the critical process of urbanization, while during this process there are various corresponding problems generated, safety is the most important one, especially at urban-rural fringe areas due to mixed traffic flow and complicated land use. This study intended to investigate the injury severity interaction between urban area and urban-rural fringe area, and explore the correlation within injury severity levels and heterogeneity attributed to unobserved factors. To address the correlation and heterogeneity issues, a grouped random parameters seemingly unrelated bivariate (SUB) probit model was proposed, in which the SUB probit model addressed the correlation of residuals, while the random parameters model accommodated the heterogeneity due to unobserved factors. By comparing the pooled with random parameters models, the results showed that random parameters SUB probit model performed better than the pooled one, and the dataset collected from 2013 to 2017 in Chengdu, China was adopted to illustrate the proposed model. It is found that crash location, speed limit and age of person injured are significant for injury severity in urban and urban-rural fringe areas, but crash form plays a significant role in urban area while number of persons involved should be paid more attention due to injury severity in urban-rural fringe area. Some empirical suggestions are presented to improve the safety in urban and urban-rural fringe areas.

BACKGROUND: This study uses bootstrapping to evaluate the technical variability (in terms of model parameter variation) of Zernike corneal surface fit parameters based on Casia2 biometric data. METHODS: Using a dataset containing N = 6953 Casia2 biometric measurements from a cataractous population, a Fringe Zernike polynomial surface of radial degree 10 (36 components) was fitted to the height data. The fit error (height - reconstruction) was bootstrapped 100 times after normalisation. After reversal of normalisation, the bootstrapped fit errors were added to the reconstructed height, and characteristic surface parameters (flat/steep axis, radii, and asphericities in both axes) extracted. The median parameters refer to a robust surface representation for later estimates of elevation, whereas the SD of the 100 bootstraps refers to the variability of the surface fit. RESULTS: Bootstrapping gave median radius and asphericity values of 7.74/7.68 mm and -0.20/-0.24 for the corneal front surface in the flat/steep meridian and 6.52/6.37 mm and -0.22/-0.31 for the corneal back surface. The respective SD values for the 100 bootstraps were 0.0032/0.0028 mm and 0.0093/0.0082 for the front and 0.0126/0.0115 mm and 0.0366/0.0312 for the back surface. The uncertainties for the back surface are systematically larger as compared to the uncertainties of the front surface. CONCLUSION: As measured with the Casia2 tomographer, the fit parameters for the corneal back surface exhibit a larger degree of variability compared with those for the front surface. Further studies are needed to show whether these uncertainties are representative for the situation where actual repeat measurements are possible.

ABSTRACT

The rejection of research results is sometimes thought to be justified in cases of individuals embracing fringe ideas that depart significantly from prevailing orthodoxy, or in cases of individuals who lack appropriate expertise or credentials. The case of John Garcia exhibits both of these dimensions, and illustrates that such rejection can delay scientific advancements. Garcia's work decisively challenged what was the orthodoxy in psychology in the midcentury: behaviorism. Behaviorist learning theorists suffered from theory-entrenchment insofar as they failed to acknowledge Garcia's anomalous research findings that ran counter to their theoretical expectations. The case study also illustrates that theories on the margins can become embraced as a result of advancements in adjacent research fields. Studying how Garcia's work moved from fringe to mainstream results in lessons for the philosophy of science and epistemology more generally. Only when we see the mechanisms of exclusion at work can we understand how science and other knowledge production systems can inadvertently act counterproductively via gatekeeping practices that filter out unorthodox points of view.

ABSTRACT

The Fringe Reflection is a robust and non-contact technique for optical measurement and specular surface characterization. The periodic alternation between dark and light cycles of the fringe patterns encodes the geometric information and provides a non-contact method of spatial measurement through phase extraction. Precisely expressing the positions of the points of the fringe pattern is a fundamental requirement for an accurate fringe reflection measurement. However, the nonlinear processes, both in generating the fringe pattern on a screen and capturing it using pixel values, cause inevitable errors in the phase measurement and eventually reduce the system's precision. Aiming at reducing these nonlinear errors, we focus on constructing a new quantity from the pixel values of the photos of the fringe patterns that could linearly respond to the ideal fringe pattern. To this end, we hypothesize that the process of displaying the fringe pattern on a screen using a control function is similar to the process of capturing the pattern and converting the illuminating information into pixel values, which can be described using the camera's response function. This similarity allows us to build a scaled energy quantity that could have a better linear relation with the control function. We optimize the extracted camera response function using an objective to increase the precision and reduce the quoted error. Experiments designed to determine the positions of points along the quartile lines verify the effectiveness of the proposed method in improving fringe reflection measurement precision.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate, in vivo, a recently developed imaging system (Aeva-HE™), based on fringe projection methodology: (i) its correlation with expert's assessments and real age of 85 French Caucasian women and (ii) its potential, as a screening tool, in rapidly selecting prototypes of tensile cosmetic products. MATERIALS AND METHODS: First, the bare faces of 85 differently aged French/Caucasian women were photographed under standard conditions and further analyzed by the Aeva-HE™ device. An expert aesthetician graded the severity of wrinkling on a fixed scale, helped by the use of a dedicated Skin Aging Atlas. A panel of 15 judges performed the same task on full-face standard photographs. The Aeva-HE™ software yielded various wrinkle's parameters (density, volume, mean depth, etc.) on different facial locations, according to age-groups. Second, seven women, balanced in age and wrinkling severity, were recruited in a separate study. These women applied at Day 1 a prototype of the tensile product and at Day 2, they applied another prototype of the tensile product. The whole faces (before and after products application) of the seven studied women were captured and analyzed by the Aeva-HE™ system. RESULTS: The density of wrinkles was significantly highly correlated with the aesthetician scores and, unsurprisingly, with age. Some parameters (volume, depths) of different wrinkles (glabellar, crow's feet, cheeks) were quantified, showing different absolute values and of statistically different progressions with age. The amplitudes of the rapid effects brought by the two prototypes of tensile products were clearly differentiated. CONCLUSION: The recently developed device Aeva-HE™ is an efficient system for rapidly establishing a faithful and precise status of facial wrinkles, in vivo and seems like a precious tool in the rapid screening of tensile products, possibly performed on a rather limited number of subjects.

ABSTRACT

Close-range photogrammetry methods are widely used for non-contact and accurate measurements of surface shapes. These methods are based on calculating the three-dimensional coordinates of an object from two-dimensional images using special digital processing algorithms. Due to the relatively complex measurement principle, the accurate estimation of the photogrammetric measurement error is a non-trivial task. Typically, theoretical estimations or computer modelling are used to solve this problem. However, these approaches cannot provide an accurate estimate because it is impossible to consider all factors that influence the measurement results. To solve this problem, we propose the use of physical modelling. The measurement results from the photogrammetric system under test were compared with the results of a more accurate reference measurement method. This comparison allowed the error to be estimated under controlled conditions. The test object was a flexible surface whose shape could vary smoothly over a wide range. The estimation of the measurement accuracy for a large number of different surface shapes allows us to obtain new results that are difficult to obtain using standard approaches. To implement the proposed approach, a laboratory system for the error estimation of close-range photogrammetric measurements was developed. The paper contains a detailed description of the developed system and the proposed technique for a comparison of the measurement results. The error in the reference method, which was chosen to be phasogrammetry, was evaluated experimentally. Experimental testing of the stereo photogrammetric system was performed according to the proposed technique. The obtained results show that the proposed technique can reveal dependencies that may not be detected by standard approaches.

BACKGROUND: Fringe is a glycosyltransferase involved in tumor occurrence and metastasis. However, a comprehensive analysis of the Fringe family members lunatic fringe (LFNG), manic fringe (MFNG), radical fringe (RFNG) in human cancers is lacking. METHODS: In this study, we performed a pan-cancer analysis of Fringe family members in 33 cancer types with transcriptomic, genomic, methylation data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) project. The correlation between Fringe family member expression and patient overall survival, copy number variation, methylation, Gene Ontology enrichment, and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) was investigated by using multiple databases, such as cBioPortal, Human Protein Atlas, GeneCards, STRING, MSigDB, TISIDB, and TIMER2. In vitro experiments and immunohistochemical assays were performed to validate our findings. RESULTS: High expression levels of LFNG, MFNG, RFNG were closely associated with poor overall survival in multiple cancers, particularly in pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD), uveal melanoma (UVM), and brain lower-grade glioma (LGG). Copy number variation analysis revealed that diploid and gain mutations of LFNG was significantly increased in PAAD and stomach adenocarcinoma (STAD), and significantly associated with the methylation levels in promoter regions. Significant differential genes between high and low expression groups of these Fringe family members were found to be consistently enriched in immune response and T cell activation pathway, extracellular matrix adhesion pathway, RNA splicing and ion transport pathways. Correlation between the abundance of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and LFNG, MFNG, and RFNG expression showed that high LFNG expression was associated with lower TIL levels, particularly in PAAD. In vitro experiment by using pancreatic cancer PANC1 cells showed that LFNG overexpression promoted cell proliferation and invasion. Immunohistochemical assay in 90 PAAD patients verified the expression level of LFNG and its relationship with the prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides a relatively comprehensive understanding of the expression, mutation, copy number, promoter methylation level changes along with prognosis values of LFNG, MFNG, and RFNG in different tumors. High LFNG expression may serve as a poor prognosis molecular marker for PAAD.

ABSTRACT

This paper proposes a non-contact continuous respiration monitoring method based on Fringe Projection Profilometry (FPP). This method aims to overcome the limitations of traditional intrusive techniques by providing continuous monitoring without interfering with normal breathing. The FPP sensor captures three-dimensional (3D) respiratory motion from the chest wall and abdomen, and the analysis algorithms extract respiratory parameters. The system achieved a high Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of 37 dB with an ideal sinusoidal respiration signal. Experimental results demonstrated that a mean correlation of 0.95 and a mean Root-Mean-Square Error (RMSE) of 0.11 breaths per minute (bpm) were achieved when comparing to a reference signal obtained from a spirometer.

ABSTRACT

Fringe projection profilometry (FPP) has been widely used for 3D reconstruction, surface measurement, and reverse engineering. However, if the surface of an object has a high reflectivity, overexposure can easily occur. Image saturation caused by overexposure can lead to an incorrect intensity of the captured pattern images, resulting in phase and measurement errors of FPP. To address this issue, we propose a phase retrieval method for the 3D shape measurement of high-reflectivity surfaces based on π phase-shifting fringes. Our method only requires eight images to be projected, including three single-frequency three-step phase-shifting patterns and one pattern used to provide phase unwrapping constraints, called conventional patterns, as well as the π phase-shifting patterns corresponding to the four conventional patterns, called supplemental patterns. Saturated pixels of conventional fringes are replaced by unsaturated pixels in supplemental fringes to suppress phase retrieval errors. We analyzed all 16 replacement cases of fringe patterns and provided calculation methods for unwrapped phases. The main advantages of our method are as follows: (1) By combining the advantages of the stereo phase unwrapping (SPU) algorithm, the number of projected fringes is reduced. (2) By utilizing the phase unwrapping constraint provided by the fourth fringe pattern, the accuracy of SPU is improved. For highly reflective surfaces, the experimental results demonstrate the performance of the proposed method.
