ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Osteoporosis is a systemic bone metabolism disorder characterized by decreased bone mass and strength. Osteoclasts (OCs) are giant multinucleated cells that regulate bone homeostasis by degrading bone matrix. Excessive OC differentiation and activity can lead to serious bone metabolic disorders including osteoporosis. Current treatments, including antiresorptive drugs, exert considerable adverse effects, including jaw osteonecrosis. Herbal medicines, such as Ninjinyoeito (NYT), may also offer efficacy, but with fewer adverse effects. In this study, we investigated NYT's effects on osteoclastogenesis. METHODS: Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining and bone resorption assays were performed to examine NYT's effects on OC differentiation and function. OC-related gene expression at mRNA and protein levels was investigated to confirm NYT's inhibitory action against osteoclastogenesis. We also demonstrated involvement of signaling pathways mediated by IκBα and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) [extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), and p38] and showed nuclear translocation of nuclear factor of activated T-cell cytoplasmic 1 (NFATc1) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) p65 during osteoclastogenesis. RESULTS: TRAP staining and bone resorption assays confirmed that NYT significantly inhibited OC differentiation and function. Western blot and RT-PCR results showed that NYT ameliorated osteoclastogenesis by suppressing mRNA and protein level expression of OC-related genes. Moreover, blots and immunocytochemistry (ICC) data clarified that NYT abrogates signaling pathways mediated by IκBα and MAPK (ERK, JNK, p38), and demonstrated nuclear translocation of NFATc1 and NF-κB p65 during OC differentiation. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest NYT is an alternative therapeutic candidate for treating osteoporosis.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study aimed to present a government-led accreditation system for upgrading the quality control of herbal medicine by introducing the process and evaluation standard of external herbal dispensaries (EHDs) of traditional Korean medicine (TKM) clinics in South Korea 2018 to refer to other countries where herbal medicine were used similarly in Korea. Development Process: We organized an EHD accreditation committee for the establishment of an accreditation system. The committee consisted of 9 experts an official of the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MoHW), a professor expert of TKM, a good manufacturing practice expert, a hazard analysis and critical control point expert, and an accreditation system expert. After 3 meetings, a draft of the evaluation standard and evaluation system was established in 2017. Based on the draft, a pilot test was conducted to determine the applicability of the evaluation standards in 2017. Two additional meeting was held to confirm the accreditation standards and was finalized in 2018. Results: The evaluation standard for EHDs was developed. In the case of herbal medicine EHDs, the evaluation standard consisted of 9 evaluation categories, 25 evaluation parts, and 81 evaluation items were developed. The results of the evaluation of the pilot tests are as follows, and the results show that there is a deviation between the EHDs. Conclusion: As a world's first, Korea MoHW successfully launched the accreditation system for upgrading the quality control system of herbal medicine not approved by Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in 2018. Our report hope to provide a good reference to other countries where having similar herbal medicine system in South Korea hoping to make better quality control of herbal medicines.

ABSTRACT

Ten compounds, six extracts and five fractions obtained from three Nigerian plants were assayed for their in vitro antitrypanosomal and antileishmanial activities. Each plant was extacted with hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. Isolated compounds were characterized and identified based on their NMR chemical shifts and comparison to literature reports. The crude extracts, fractions and isolated compounds were tested against the kinetoplastid parasites: bloodstream forms of Trypanosoma brucei Lister 427WT and the derived multi-drug resistant clone B48, and promastigote forms of Leishmania mexicana cas9/T7 and the derived clone cas9ΔNT1. Column chromatography of the extracts using silica gel yielded ten compounds identified as curzerenone, epi-curzerenone, chloranthene F, isofuranodienone, 8(17)-12E-labdadiene-15, 16-dial and 15-hydroxy-8(17),12E-labdadiene-16-al from Siphonochilus aetiopicus, lupeol, linalolic acid and spinasterone from Calliandra portoricensis, and abruquinone B from Abrus precatorius. The assay results showed that the Siphonochilus aetiopicus and Calliandra portoricensis crude extracts, fractions and compounds displayed moderate activity against the Trypanosoma brucei but showed less activity against Leishmania mexicana. Abrus precatorius crude extract, fraction, and isolated compound exhibited only weak trypanocidal and leishmanicidal activities against both kinetoplastid parasites tested. These findings have provided evidence for the use of Siphonochilus aetiopicus and Calliandra portoricensis in traditional medicine relating to parasitic diseases.

ABSTRACT

Background: Lung cancer has the highest mortality rate of all cancers worldwide. Conserving the immune system and reducing the adverse events associated with cancer treatment have become increasingly important. Our study aimed to investigate the immunological effects of herbal medicine (HM) alone, independent of conventional cancer therapies, in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods: We searched 8 databases for articles published until March 2023. Bias risk was assessed using RevMan 5.4. Meta-analyses of CD4+ and CD8+ levels reported in the included RCTs were also performed. Results: A total of 610 patients from 5 RCTs were included in the analysis. Immune markers in the peripheral blood of patients treated with HM alone were compared with those in the control group. As a result of meta-analyses, CD4+ (three studies; mean difference(MD) = 5.21, 95 confidence interval (CI) [3.26, 7.27], I2 = 61%, n = 428) and CD4+/CD8+ (two studies; MD = 0.22, 95% CI [0.18, 0.26], I2 = 0%, n = 278) significantly increased in the treatment group, while CD8+ levels (three studies; MD = -3.04, 95% CI [-5.80, -0.29], I2 = 74%, n = 428) decreased in HM groups compared to comparison groups. In a single trial, IL-1, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-a levels and the number of Tregs in the treatment group significantly decreased, while Th17 levels and the Th17/Treg ratios increased. Conclusion: This study provides a comprehensive and systematic review of the immunological effects of HM in patients with NSCLC. Future studies should explore how the immunological effects of HM correlate with clinical outcomes, such as tumor response and survival rates.PROSPERO registration: CRD42023459.

ABSTRACT

The majority of cancer patients experience fatigue during the course of their illness. Fatigue should not be seen as an inevitable consequence of cancer and its treatment. Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a multidimensional symptom complex that is influenced by a variety of factors. Complementary medicine approaches offer potentially promising strategies to address this fatigue and can therefore be a valuable addition to conventional therapies.In this narrative review, complementary medicine treatment approaches for tumor-associated fatigue are presented according to the historical development and current scientific evidence. The focus is on methods with the highest current evidence based on the recommendations of national and international guidelines. Therapeutic approaches from mind-body medicine, such as mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), yoga, tai chi, and qigong, as well as acupuncture, acupressure, moxibustion, and phytotherapeutic treatment approaches are presented.In Germany, the complementary therapies listed here are not generally covered by health insurances. However, a few clinics have developed comprehensive programs in mind-body medicine, for which cost coverage has already been obtained. As a result, complementary medical treatments for cancer-related fatigue that adhere to national and international guidelines are typically available only as private services or within the framework of study participation.

ABSTRACT

Background: Peripheral inflammation is often associated with depressive disorders, and immunological biomarkers of depression remain a focus of investigation. Methods: We performed RNA-seq analysis of RNA transcripts of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells from a case-control study including subjects with self-reported depression in the pre-symptomatic state of major depressive disorder and analyzed differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and the frequency of intron retention (IR) using rMATS. Results: Among the statistically significant DEGs identified, the 651 upregulated DEGs were particularly enriched in the term "bacterial infection and phagocytosis", whereas the 820 downregulated DEGs were enriched in the terms "antigen presentation" and "T-cell proliferation and maturation". We also analyzed 158 genes for which the IR was increased (IncIR) and 211 genes for which the IR was decreased (DecIR) in the depressed subjects. Although the Gene Ontology terms associated with IncIR and DecIR were very similar to those of the up- and downregulated genes, respectively, IR genes appeared to be particularly enriched in genes with sensor functions, with a preponderance of the term "ciliary assembly and function". The observation that IR genes specifically interact with innate immunity genes suggests that immune-related genes, as well as cilia-related genes, may be excellent markers of depression. Re-analysis of previously published RNA-seq data from patients with MDD showed that common IR genes, particularly our predicted immune- and cilia-related genes, are commonly detected in populations with different levels of depression, providing validity for using IR to detect depression. Conclusion: Depression was found to be associated with activation of the innate immune response and relative inactivation of T-cell signaling. The DEGs we identified reflect physiological demands that are controlled at the transcriptional level, whereas the IR results reflect a more direct mechanism for monitoring protein homeostasis. Accordingly, an alteration in IR, namely IncIR or DecIR, is a stress response, and intron-retained transcripts are sensors of the physiological state of the cytoplasm. The results demonstrate the potential of relative IR as a biomarker for the immunological stratification of depressed patients and the utility of IR for the discovery of novel pathways involved in recovery from depression.

ABSTRACT

Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) is being more and more used in cancer treatment because of its ability to regulate the immune system. Chinese Herbal Medicine has several advantages over other treatment options, including being multi-component, multi-target, and having fewer side effects. Dendritic cells (DCs) are specialized antigen presenting cells that play a vital part in connecting the innate and adaptive immune systems. They are also important in immunotherapy. Recent evidence suggests that Chinese Herbal Medicine and its components can positively impact the immune response by targeting key functions of dendritic cells. In this review, we have summarized the influences of Chinese Herbal Medicine on the immunobiological feature of dendritic cells, emphasized an anti-tumor effect of CHM-treated DCs, and also pointed out deficiencies in the regulation of DC function by Chinese Herbal Medicine and outlined future research directions.

BACKGROUND: Informed consent (IC) is a fundamental principle in medical ethics that upholds respect for patient autonomy. Although widely applied in healthcare, its feasibility and implementation in herbal medicine have been underexplored. This study therefore aimed to explore the practices and attitudes of herbalists regarding informed consent. METHODS: To achieve these objectives, a qualitative cross-sectional study was conducted from June to December 2020. Twenty-one in-depth interviews with herbalists and four key informant interviews with leaders of the different traditional medicine organizations were conducted. The data were analyzed thematically using NVivo version 12 software. RESULTS: Sixteen of the twenty-one participants acquired oral herbal medicine knowledge from their relatives. Although a positive inclination toward obtaining IC was evident, the focus was on disclosing basic information. Discussions of alternative treatments and herbal specifics were less frequent. Disease management decisions often involve shared responsibility within families or societies. Documented IC procedures are rare among herbalists, who deem consent forms unnecessary, although they recognize the potential benefits of IC in fostering trust and professionalism. Challenges hindering IC implementation included regulatory gaps, inadequate skills, and the absence of mechanisms to protect the intellectual property rights of herbal medicine. CONCLUSION: This study illuminates how educational, cultural, familial, and regulatory factors influence herbalists' practices and attitudes toward informed consent.

ABSTRACT

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Approximately 52% of patients with cancer experience cancer-related fatigue (CRF), which negatively impacts both prognosis and quality of life (QoL). CRF is characterized by exhaustion, which is linked to cancer or treatment. Sipjeondaebo-tang (SDT) is an herbal medicine that is effective in alleviating fatigue and potentially easing CRF; however, there is currently insufficient clinical or scientific evidence to support the efficacy of SDT in managing CRF. AIM OF THE STUDY: We assessed the efficacy and safety of SDT for CRF by performing a systematic literature review and meta-analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on CRF by searching nine databases, including EMBASE, MEDLINE, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, on November 30, 2023. Based on the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, two reviewers independently screened and selected the literature, followed by data extraction. We assessed the quality of the selected studies using version 2 of the Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias tool. Review Manager software was used for the data synthesis. A meta-analysis was conducted when two or more studies shared comparable interventions and outcome measures. For all other cases, a qualitative analysis was performed. The certainty of evidence for each result was assessed employing the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation method. RESULTS: This study contained eleven studies with a total of 754 participants. SDT significantly reduced CRF and improved QoL compared with the control group, both when used as an adjuvant therapy and as a monotherapy. Specifically, low-certainty evidence suggested that SDT, when used as an adjunctive therapy, could effectively reduce CRF, as indicated by a reduction in lack of strength (standardized mean difference = -1.28, 95% confidence interval (CI): -1.78 to -0.78, P < 0.00001). Additionally, moderate-certainty evidence indicated that SDT as an adjunctive therapy could improve QoL, as measured by Karnofsky Performance Status (mean difference = 4.67, 95% CI: 2.19 to 7.14, P = 0.0002). No serious adverse events occurred with SDT, whether it was used as an adjuvant therapy or as a monotherapy. CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review elucidated the safety and efficacy of SDT in managing CRF. Nevertheless, the low quality of the included studies highlights the need for carefully planned large-scale RCTs.

ABSTRACT

Targeted therapies using epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors have markedly improved survival rates and quality of life for patients with EGFR-mutant lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). Despite these advancements, resistance to EGFR inhibitors remains a significant challenge, limiting the overall effectiveness of the treatment. This study explored the synergistic effects of combining Paeoniae Radix (PR) with first-generation EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), erlotinib and gefitinib, to overcome this resistance. Transcriptomic analysis of EGFR-mutant LUAD cell lines revealed that PR treatment could potentially reverse the gene signatures associated with resistance to EGFR-TKIs, primarily through the suppression of the Aurora B pathway. Experimental validation demonstrated that combining PR with erlotinib and gefitinib enhanced drug responsiveness by inhibiting Aurora kinase activity and inducing apoptosis in LUAD cells. Additionally, gene expression changes confirmed these combined effects, with the suppression of the Aurora B pathway and upregulation of the apoptotic pathway, which was accompanied by increased expression of multiple pro-apoptotic genes. Our findings contribute to the development of natural product-based therapeutic strategies to mitigate drug resistance in LUAD.

ABSTRACT

Intestinal cancer (IC) poses a significant global health challenge that drives continuous efforts to explore effective treatment modalities. Conventional treatments for IC are effective, but are associated with several limitations and drawbacks. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) plays an important role in the overall cancer prevention and therapeutic strategies. Recent years have seen a growing body of research focus on the potential of CHM in IC treatment, showing promising results in managing IC and mitigating the adverse effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. This review provides updated information from preclinical research and clinical observation on CHM's role in treatment of IC, offering insights into its comprehensive management and guiding future prevention strategies and clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

Currently, there is no cure or effective treatment for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The mechanisms underlying ALS remain unclear, with immunological factors potentially playing a significant role. Adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA), a systematic review of preclinical studies was conducted, searching seven databases including PubMed, covering literature from the inception of the databases to April 10, 2024. Methodological quality of the included literature was assessed using CAMARADES, while the risk of bias in the included studies was evaluated using SYRCLE's ROB tool. Review Manager 5.4.1 statistical software was used for meta-analysis of the outcomes. The scoping review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute Methodological Guidelines and reporting of this review followed the PRISMA-extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA -ScR) checklist to explore the immunological mechanisms of Herbal Medicine (HM) in treating ALS. This systematic review and meta-analysis involved 18 studies with a total of 443 animals. The studies scored between 4 to 8 for methodological quality and 3 to 7 for risk of bias, both summing up to 10.A remarkable effects of HM in ALS mice, including onset time(Standardized Mean Difference(SMD): 1.75, 95% Confidence Interval(CI) (1.14 ~ 2.36), Z = 5.60, P < 0.01), survival time(SMD = 1.42, 95% CI (0.79 ~ 2.04), Z = 4.44, P < 0.01), stride length(SMD=1.90, 95% CI (1.21 to 2.59), Z = 5.39, P < 0.01) and duration time (Mean Difference(MD)=6.79, 95% CI [-0.28, 13.87], Z=1.88, P =0.06), showing HM's certain efficiency in treating ALS mice. The scoping review ultimately included 35 articles for review. HMs may treat ALS through mechanisms such as combating oxidative stress, excitatory amino acid toxicity, and calcium cytotoxicity, understanding and exploring the mechanisms will bring hope to patients. Individual herbs and their formulations within HM address ALS through a variety of immune pathways, including safeguarding the blood-brain barrier, countering neuroinflammation, impeding complement system activation, mitigating natural killer cell toxicity, and regulating T cell-mediated immune pathways. The preclinical evidence supports the utilization of HM as a conventional treatment for ALS mice. Growing evidence indicates that HM may potentially delay neurological degeneration in ALS by activating diverse signaling pathways, especially immune pathways.

AIM: This study was done to clinically investigate the efficacy of glycyrrhizin-based intracanal medication (ICM) compared to calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 and Ledermix on the bacterial counts inside the root canals of necrotic teeth with chronic periapical periodontitis. METHODOLOGY: Thirty-six patients having single-rooted and single-canaled necrotic teeth with chronic periapical periodontitis were enrolled in this research. Aseptic control measures were taken before clinical steps. Access cavity preparation was done. First bacteriological samples (S1) were collected immediately after access cavity preparation and before cleaning and shaping inside the root canals. Cleaning and shaping were performed on the root canals. Patients were randomly allocated into 3 groups according to the type of intracanal medicament used [Ca(OH)2, Ledermix, Glycyrrhizin]. Second bacteriological samples (S2) were collected after 1 week from placing the ICMs. S1 and S2 were transferred to the lab of microbiology for culturing on blood agar dishes in anaerobic conditions, and the bacteria on the plates were enumerated as colony-forming units (CFUs) by the manual counting method. The anti-bacterial efficacy of the ICM was estimated by the percentage reduction in the bacterial colonies from S1 to S2. RESULTS: All tested ICM documented a significant reduction in the CFUs from S1 to S2 (p < 0.05). Regarding S1, there was no significant difference between the three tested materials (p > 0.05). Regarding S2, Glycyrrhizin and Ledermix showed significantly lower CFUs than Ca(OH)2. There was no significant difference between Glycyrrhizin and Ledermix. CONCLUSION: Under the conditions of the present study, Glycyrrhizin and Ledermix showed comparable antimicrobial effects that were better than the commonly used Ca(OH)2 ICM. Glycyrrhizin may be a promising ICM. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Herbal medicine can be considered as an alternative antimicrobial material for root canal disinfection because it has many benefits, like low toxicity, absence of microbial resistance, and favorable antimicrobial efficacy. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Anxiety symptoms and disorders are common in the UK. Whilst waiting for, or alongside, treatments such as anxiolytics or psychological therapies, people often self-manage anxiety symptoms with products purchased over-the-counter (OTC), such as herbal medicines or dietary supplements. However, the evidence for these products is often presented across different reviews and is not easy for patients or healthcare professionals to compare and understand. AIMS: To determine the nature and size of the evidence base available for these products. METHODS: A scoping review. CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycInfo, and AMED (inception-Dec 2022) were searched for RCTs assessing OTC products in people aged 18-60 with symptoms or a diagnosis of anxiety. RESULTS: In total 69 papers assessing a range of products were found, which mostly focussed on kava, lavender, saffron, probiotics, Galphimia glauca and valerian. Studies used varying dosages. Compared to herbal medicine studies, there were much fewer dietary supplement studies and homeopathic remedy studies, despite some of use of these by the general public. CONCLUSION: Future research needs to investigate commonly used but less evaluated products (e.g. chamomile, St John's Wort) and to evaluate products against or alongside conventional treatments to better reflect patient decision making.

ABSTRACT

Pueraria is a time-honored food and medicinal plant, which is widely used in China. Puerarin, the main component extracted from pueraria, has a variety of pharmacological characteristics. In recent years, puerarin has received increasing attention for its significant hepatoprotective effects, such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, alcohol-related liver disease, and hepatic carcinoma. This paper explores the pharmacological effects of puerarin on various liver diseases through multiple mechanisms, including inflammation factors, oxidative stress, lipid metabolism, apoptosis, and autophagy. Due to its restricted solubility, pharmacokinetic studies revealed that puerarin has a low bioavailability. However, combining puerarin with novel drug delivery systems can improve its bioavailability. Meanwhile, puerarin has very low toxicity and high safety, providing a solid foundation for its further. In addition, this paper discusses puerarin's clinical trials, highlighting its unique advantages. Given its excellent pharmacological effects, puerarin is expected to be a potential drug for the treatment of various liver diseases.

ABSTRACT

Osteoarthritis (OA) is an age-related disease characterized by inflammation, pain, articular cartilage damage, synovitis, and irreversible disability. Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Thunb.) Makino (GP), a herbal medicine traditionally used in East Asia for its anti-inflammatory properties, was investigated for its potential to modulate OA pathology and symptoms. This study evaluated GP's efficacy in inhibiting pain, functional decline, and cartilage destruction in monosodium iodoacetate-induced OA and acetic acid-induced writhing models. Additionally, the effects of GP on OA-related inflammatory targets were assessed via mRNA and protein expression in rat knee cartilage and lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW 264.7 cells. The GP group demonstrated significant pain relief, functional improvement, and cartilage protection. Notably, GP inhibited key inflammatory mediators, including interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-3 and MMP-13, cyclooxygenase-2, and prostaglandin E receptor 2, surpassing the effects of active controls. These findings suggest that GP is a promising candidate for disease-modifying OA drugs and warrants further comprehensive studies.

Background: Very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants often experience feeding intolerance owing to organ immaturity, and the most frequent sign is the presence of abdominal distention. Daikenchuto (DKT), a traditional Japanese herbal medicine, is used to improve gastrointestinal function, particularly in adults. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of DKT in reducing abdominal distention and intestinal gas in VLBW infants. Methods: This study involved a retrospective chart review of 24 VLBW infants treated with DKT at Hamamatsu University Hospital between April 2016 and March 2021. The effects of DKT treatment at a dose of 0.3 g/kg/day were evaluated through clinical parameters and abdominal radiography. Results: Before treatment, marked abdominal distention was observed in 46% of the infants, which reduced to 4% within a week of DKT administration. The gas volume score (GVS) decreased in 92% of the patients within the first week of treatment and markedly decreased by ≥20% in 46% of the patients. The effects of improving abdominal distention and decreasing the GVS on radiography persisted for 1-2 weeks after treatment initiation. No clinical parameters affecting a GVS reduction of ≥20% and no notable adverse effects were observed. Conclusions: While the preliminary findings suggest that DKT may help manage abdominal distention in VLBW infants, further studies with placebo-controlled trials, larger sample sizes, use of advanced image processing software, and consideration of additional influencing factors are required to substantiate these results and identify predictors of treatment response.

BACKGROUND: This cross-cultural study conducted in the diverse regions of Assam, Meghalaya, and Manipur sheds light on the common utilization of five specific medicinal plants among indigenous communities residing in these areas. OBJECTIVES: The main focus of this study is to document and compare the traditional medicinal plant used and the knowledge and practices related to women's health issues in different cultures; to identify commonalities and differences in the use of medicinal plants across cultures and various medicinal plants used traditionally by the indigenous communities to treat women's health problems according to their indigenous name, scientific name. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study used a survey method and a pre-structured interview schedule through one-on-one interactive communication and field observation. The authors collected data from three different states, i.e., Assam (Karbi Anglong district & Udalguri district), Meghalaya (East Khasi Hills district), and Manipur (Senapati district) by personally meeting and interacting with traditional herbal medicinal practitioners. For this study, 10 practitioners from each area of study were interviewed. During the data collection process, the vernacular name of the medicinal plant, methods of preparation, mode of application, and probable dosage were compiled and documented involving practitioners belonging to four different communities, i.e, Bodo, Karbi, Khasi, and Poumai Naga of the selected states. RESULTS: A total of 39 plant species were meticulously collected and documented across the Karbi Anglong district and Udalguri district in Assam, East Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya, and Senapati district in Manipur. Turmeric (Curcuma longa), ginger (Zingiber officinale), gooseberry (Emblica officinalis), papaya (Carica papaya), and passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) have emerged as common medicinal resources within these communities. Poaceae, represented by 5 species, emerged as the dominant family among the collected plants, highlighting the diversity and significance of these botanical remedies. Zingiber officinale Roscoe " has the highest usage report of 18 with an RFC (Relative frequency citation) of 0.45. CONCLUSION: The study's findings reveal a rich repository of traditional herbal knowledge in the northeast regions of India. Notably, the indigenous communities of these regions use plant resources to cure a wide range of ailments. This study emphasizes the necessity of documenting, preserving, and transmitting traditional herbal medicinal knowledge for both cultural and practical reasons. It also provides vital insights into the importance of cross-cultural study in promoting different cultures, the richness of traditional medicinal knowledge by engaging with diverse cultures and demonstrates the possibilities for incorporating traditional medicine into modern healthcare systems, particularly in treating women's health issues across these culturally diverse regions.

ABSTRACT

Botanical supplements and herbal products are widely used by consumers for various purported health benefits, and their popularity is increasing. Some of these natural products can have adverse effects on liver function and/or interact with prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications. Ensuring the safety of these readily available products is a crucial public health concern; however, not all regulatory authorities require premarket safety review and/or testing. To address and discuss these and other emerging needs related to botanical safety, a symposium was held at the Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City (UT) on March 11, 2024. The symposium addressed the latest research on botanical-induced liver toxicity and botanical-drug interactions, including new approach methods to screen for toxicity, challenges in assessing the safety of botanicals, and relating human adverse events to specific products. The presentations and robust panel discussion between the speakers and audience highlighted the need for further research and collaboration to improve the safety of botanical supplements and herbal products, with the ultimate goal of protecting consumer health. Although utility of many of the modern tools presented in the symposium requires further study, the synergistic efforts of diverse experts hold promise for effective prediction and evaluation of botanical-induced hepatotoxicity and botanical-drug interaction potential.
