ABSTRACT

Patients after renal transplantation are susceptible to secondary malignancies, including anal squamous cell carcinoma. Chemoradiotherapy is the standard treatment for anal squamous cell carcinoma; however, typical irradiation fields for anal cancer encompass a transplanted kidney located in the right iliac fossa, which causes complete renal dysfunction. Thus, typical irradiation fields are not feasible for this population. Additionally, standard concurrent chemotherapy demonstrates nephrotoxicity. Here, we report a case of modified definitive chemoradiotherapy for a 40-year-old patient with locally advanced perianal squamous cell carcinoma after renal transplantation whose abdominoperineal resection was difficult because of a history of repeated open surgeries and long-term steroids. We modified the cranial side of the elective nodal irradiation fields in this case to spare the transplanted kidney, considering the lymph chains of the perianal tumor. We then used continuous 5-fluorouracil to avoid nephrotoxicity of mitomycin C, considering his life expectancy. Modified definitive chemoradiotherapy achieved complete remission with expected toxicities. Now, approximately five years after the procedure, the patient remains disease-free, preserving anal and renal function. Definitive chemoradiotherapy using modified irradiation fields and chemotherapy may be an option for patients with anal squamous cell carcinoma after renal transplantation.

ABSTRACT

Locally advanced cervical cancers are often treated with palliative intent due to concerns that the tumor is too far advanced or too large to be treated curatively. Also, patients greater than 65 years of age with cervical cancer are sometimes regarded as being too old or too frail to be cured with combined radiation and chemotherapy. These patients are often treated with radiation alone or with palliative therapy. Understanding the treatment modalities for cervical cancer is essential, as they can be complex and unique to each patient's specific diagnosis. This case report aims to describe the dramatic response to treatment with combined radiation and chemotherapy for a patient greater than 65 years of age with pelvis-filling cervical cancer with right-sided hydronephrosis. After a five-week course of concurrent chemoradiation, the cervical mass radiographically completely disappeared, with no evidence of disease noted on pelvic MRI.

ABSTRACT

Sustained low-intensity muscle fatigue (SULMF) refers to the phenomenon that skeletal muscle continues to contract at less than 10% of maximum voluntary contraction during work activities, resulting in decreased muscle contractile function, which is one of the main causes of occupational neck, shoulder, waist and back discomfort and pain symptoms. Although surface electromyography is a key physiological technique for assessing the efficiency of neuromuscular activity, its effectiveness in objectively detecting SULMF remains controversial. Therefore, this paper describes the neurophysiological mechanism and related hypotheses of SULMF, and reviews the research progress of electromyography detection indicators and detection methods of SULMF, which is of great significance for the early prevention and accurate detection of work-related musculoskeletal disorders.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the impact of migraine and fibromyalgia (FM) in TMD patients, focusing on pain, anxiety, depression, and quality of life (QoL). Additionally, we investigated how these variables relate to the total number of comorbidities to gain insights into their interactions. METHODS: A retrospective data collection was conducted during January 2016 to December 2022, involving 409 adult TMD patients. TMD patients were categorised into four groups: those without comorbidity (TMD-only) and those with comorbid migraine and/or fibromyalgia (TMD + MG, TMD + FM and TMD + MG + FM). Quantitative variables were compared among them. Linear regression was used to analyse the associations between these variables. RESULTS: Most of study population were women (79%) with a mean age of 44.43 years. TMD + MG patients reported longer pain duration, higher pain scores and greater pain interference compared with TMD-only patients. Similarly, TMD + FM patients had higher pain intensity than patients with TMD only. Both the TMD + MG and TMD + FM groups had higher levels of anxiety, depression, and health impairment compared with patients with TMD only. Patients with all three pain conditions (TMD + MG + FM) experienced the longest pain duration, highest pain intensity, psychological distress, and impaired QoL. The result showed positive associations between pain outcomes, psychological measures, pain's impact on QoL, and the number of comorbidities and a negative association between overall health states and the number of comorbidities. CONCLUSIONS: These findings underscore the importance of considering the presence of comorbidities and addressing physical and psychological aspects in the management of TMD patients.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) optimizes spot intensities and position, providing better conformability. However, the successful application of IMPT is dependent upon addressing the challenges posed by range and setup uncertainties. In order to address the uncertainties in IMPT, robust optimization is essential. PURPOSE: This study aims to develop a novel fast algorithm for robust optimization of IMPT with minimum monitor unit (MU) constraint. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The study formulates a robust optimization problem and proposes a novel, fast algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) framework. This algorithm enables distributed computation and parallel processing. Ten clinical cases were used as test scenarios to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach. The robust optimization method (RBO-NEW) was compared with plans that only consider nominal optimization using CTV (NMO-CTV) without handling uncertainties and PTV (NMO-PTV) to handle the uncertainties, as well as with conventional robust-optimized plans (RBO-CONV). Dosimetric metrics, including D95, homogeneity index, and Dmean, were used to evaluate the dose distribution quality. The area under the root-mean-square dose (RMSD)-volume histogram curves (AUC) and dose-volume histogram (DVH) bands were used to evaluate the robustness of the treatment plan. Optimization time cost was also assessed to measure computational efficiency. RESULTS: The results demonstrated that the RBO plans exhibited better plan quality and robustness than the NMO plans, with RBO-NEW showing superior computational efficiency and plan quality compared to RBO-CONV. Specifically, statistical analysis results indicated that RBO-NEW was able to reduce the computational time from 389.70 ± 207.40 $389.70\pm 207.40$ to 228.60 ± 123.67 $228.60\pm 123.67$ s ( p < 0.01 $p<0.01$ ) and reduce the mean organ-at-risk (OAR) dose from 9.38 ± 12.80 $9.38\pm 12.80$ % of the prescription dose to 9.07 ± 12.39 $9.07\pm 12.39$ % of the prescription dose ( p < 0.05 $p<0.05$ ) compared to RBO-CONV. CONCLUSION: This study introduces a novel fast robust optimization algorithm for IMPT treatment planning with minimum MU constraint. Such an algorithm is not only able to enhance the plan's robustness and computational efficiency without compromising OAR sparing but also able to improve treatment plan quality and reliability.

ABSTRACT

Board certified behavior analysts (BCBA) are responsible for determining the medically necessary treatment dosage for patients (i.e., the number of hours of therapy a patient should receive per week to optimize progress) during applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy. However, because there is currently no standard method for making these determinations, BCBAs must rely on their own clinical judgment. Given that clinical judgment may be underdeveloped in some BCBAs, particularly those who are newly certified, more formal strategies are needed to guide decision making as it relates to medical necessity and treatment dosage. In this article we describe the development of the Patient Outcome Planning Calculator (POP-C), a standardized decision-making tool designed to assist novice practitioners in determining the medically necessary ABA treatment intensity and appropriate treatment setting for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We present preliminary reliability data as well as construct validity data indicating statistically significant correlations between the POP-C and several norm-referenced and criterion-referenced assessments commonly used to estimate skill level and the corresponding degree of support needed within the ASD population to inform the ABA treatment model and goals. BACKGROUND: Managing acute vertigo/dizziness for inpatients requires valid communication between the various healthcare professionals that triage such life-threatening presentations, yet there are no current scaling methods for managing such acute vertigo symptoms for inpatients. OBJECTIVE: To describe the development and validation of the Krems Acute Vertigo/Dizziness Scale (KAVEDIS), a new instrument for tracking subjective symptoms (vertigo, dizziness) and gait impairment across four unique vestibular diagnoses (Menière's disease, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, peripheral vestibular hypofunction, and vestibular migraine) over a one-year period after inpatient hospital admission. METHODS: Retrospective data collection study from KAVEDIS scale and chart documentation. RESULTS: The KAVEDIS scale can significantly distinguish scores from admission to discharge in three of four vestibular diagnoses. The documented course of subjective vestibular symptoms and gait disturbances were correlated in all four groups. CONCLUSION: We suggest that KAVEDIS documentation among inpatients admitted with acute vertigo/dizziness may improve communication between the various intervening clinicians and help to raise concern in cases of symptomprogression.

BACKGROUND: Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal symptoms in individuals engaged in strenuous exercise programs. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effects of wearable low-intensity continuous ultrasound on muscle biomechanical properties during DOMS. METHODS: Twenty volunteers were distributed into a wearable ultrasound stimulation group (WUG) (n= 10) and medical ultrasound stimulation group (MUG) (n= 10). All subjects performed wrist extensor muscle strength exercises to induce DOMS. At the site of pain, ultrasound of frequency 3 MHz was applied for 1 h or 5 min in each subject of the WUG or MUG, respectively. Before and after ultrasound stimulation, muscle biomechanical properties (tone, stiffness, elasticity, stress relaxation time, and creep) and body temperature were measured, and pain was evaluated. RESULTS: A significant decrease was found in the tone, stiffness, stress relaxation time, and creep in both groups after ultrasound stimulation (all p< 0.05). A significant decrease in the pain and increases in temperature were observed in both groups (all p< 0.05). No significant differences were observed between the groups in most evaluations. CONCLUSION: The stiffness and pain caused by DOMS were alleviated using a wearable ultrasound stimulator. Furthermore, the effects of the wearable ultrasound stimulator were like those of a medical ultrasound stimulator.

BACKGROUND: Prior literature suggests a dose-response relationship between physical activity (PA) and depressive symptoms. The intensity and domain of PA are suggested to be critical to its protective effect against depression; however, existing literature has shown mixed results. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this population-based study is to examine the associations between depressive symptoms and weekly duration of (1) total PA and (2) PA subset by intensity, domain, or both. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 2007 to 2018 was conducted using multivariable logistic and linear regression models and survey weights. Participants (N=29,730) were 20 years and older and completed the Physical Activity Questionnaire and Depression Screener. The primary outcome was the presence of depressive symptoms, and the secondary outcomes were cognitive-affective and somatic symptoms of depression. RESULTS: Participants (N=29,730) had a weighted mean age of 47.62 (SD 16.99) years, and 15,133 (51.34%) were female. On average, participants without depressive symptoms engaged in 10.87 hours of total PA per week, whereas participants with depressive symptoms engaged in 8.82 hours (P<.001). No significant associations were seen between the weekly duration of total PA and depressive symptom odds, somatic, or cognitive-affective symptoms (all P>.05). Participants with an increased weekly duration of recreational PA had decreases in depressive symptom odds (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.965, 95% CI 0.944-0.986) and in somatic (adjusted coefficient [aß]=-0.016, 95% CI -0.022 to -0.009) and cognitive-affective (aß=-0.015, 95% CI -0.023 to -0.007) symptoms. When recreational PA was subset by intensity, participants with an increased weekly duration of vigorous-intensity recreational PA had decreases in depressive symptom odds (aOR 0.926, 95% CI 0.883-0.972) and in somatic (aß=-0.021, 95% CI -0.032 to -0.010) and cognitive-affective (aß=-0.022, 95% CI -0.035 to -0.009) symptoms. However, significant associations were not seen for the weekly duration of work-related, moderate- or vigorous-intensity PAs (all P>.05). CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that recreational, not work-related PA is associated with reduced symptoms of depression. Future studies should explore the impact of the different types and contexts of PA on depressive symptomatology.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate if acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH) coupled with transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) enhance task-specific training and lead to superior and more sustained gait improvements as compared to each of these strategies used in isolation in persons with chronic, incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI). DESIGN: Proof of concept, randomized crossover trial SETTING: Outpatient, rehabilitation hospital INTERVENTIONS: Ten participants completed 3 intervention arms: 1) AIH, tSCS, and gait training (AIH + tSCS), 2) tSCS plus gait training (SHAM AIH + tSCS), and 3) gait training alone (SHAM + SHAM). Each arm consisted of 5 consecutive days of intervention with a minimum of a 4-week washout between arms. The order of arms was randomized. The study took place from December 3, 2020 to January 4, 2023. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: 10-meter walk test (10MWT) at self-selected velocity (SSV) and fast velocity (FV), 6-minute walk test (6MWT), Timed Up and Go (TUG) SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Isometric ankle plantarflexion and dorsiflexion torque RESULTS: TUG improvements were 3.44 seconds (95% CI: 1.24-5.65) significantly greater in the AIH + tSCS arm than the SHAM AIH + tSCS arm at post-intervention (POST) and 3.31 seconds (95% CI: 1.03-5.58) greater than the SHAM + SHAM arm at 1-week follow up. SSV was 0.08 m/s (95% CI: 0.02-0.14) significantly greater following the AIH + tSCS arm than the SHAM AIH + tSCS at POST. Although not significant, the AIH + tSCS arm also demonstrated the greatest average improvements compared to the other two arms at POST and 1WK for the 6MWT, FV, and ankle plantarflexion torque. CONCLUSIONS: This pilot study is the first to demonstrate that combining these three neuromodulation strategies leads to superior improvements in the TUG and SSV for individuals with chronic incomplete SCI and warrants further investigation.

ABSTRACT

This research presents an innovative reflective fiber optic probe structure, mutinously designed to detect H7N9 avian influenza virus gene precisely. This innovative structure skillfully combines multimode fiber (MMF) with a thin-diameter seven-core photonic crystal fiber (SCF-PCF), forming a semi-open Fabry-Pérot (FPI) cavity. This structure has demonstrated exceptional sensitivity in light intensity-refractive index (RI) response through rigorous theoretical and experimental validation. The development of a quasi-distributed parallel sensor array, which provides temperature compensation during measurements, has achieved a remarkable RI response sensitivity of up to 532.7 dB/RIU. The probe-type fiber optic sensitive unit, expertly functionalized with streptavidin, offers high specificity in detecting H7N9 avian influenza virus gene, with an impressively low detection limit of 10-2 pM. The development of this biosensor marks a significant development in biological detection, offering a practical engineering solution for achieving high sensitivity and specificity in light-intensity-modulated biosensing. Its potential for wide-ranging applications in various fields is now well-established.

ABSTRACT

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To assess the feasibility and efficacy of a deep learning-based three-dimensional (3D) super-resolution diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) radiomics model in predicting the prognosis of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation of uterine fibroids. METHODS: This retrospective study included 360 patients with uterine fibroids who received HIFU treatment, including Center A (training set: N = 240; internal testing set: N = 60) and Center B (external testing set: N = 60) and were classified as having a favorable or unfavorable prognosis based on the postoperative non-perfusion volume ratio. A deep transfer learning approach was used to construct super-resolution DWI (SR-DWI) based on conventional high-resolution DWI (HR-DWI), and 1198 radiomics features were extracted from manually segmented regions of interest in both image types. Following data preprocessing and feature selection, radiomics models were constructed for HR-DWI and SR-DWI using Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) algorithms, with performance evaluated using area under the curve (AUC) and decision curves. RESULT: All DWI radiomics models demonstrated superior AUC in predicting HIFU ablated uterine fibroids prognosis compared to expert radiologists (AUC: 0.706, 95% CI: 0.647-0.748). When utilizing different machine learning algorithms, the HR-DWI model achieved AUC values of 0.805 (95% CI: 0.679-0.931) with SVM, 0.797 (95% CI: 0.672-0.921) with RF, and 0.770 (95% CI: 0.631-0.908) with LightGBM. Meanwhile, the SR-DWI model outperformed the HR-DWI model (P < 0.05) across all algorithms, with AUC values of 0.868 (95% CI: 0.775-0.960) with SVM, 0.824 (95% CI: 0.715-0.934) with RF, and 0.821 (95% CI: 0.709-0.933) with LightGBM. And decision curve analysis further confirmed the good clinical value of the models. CONCLUSION: Deep learning-based 3D SR-DWI radiomics model demonstrated favorable feasibility and effectiveness in predicting the prognosis of HIFU ablated uterine fibroids, which was superior to HR-DWI model and assessment by expert radiologists.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis synthesizes research on the impact of cognitive restructuring on chronic pain intensity, aiming to integrate diverse methodologies and findings while evaluating potential moderators. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically searched multiple databases (PubMed, Web of Science, JSTOR, Sage, Social Science Research Network, PsycArticles, ScienceDirect, and Education Resources Information Center) until July 2023. Studies involving adults (≥18 years) diagnosed with chronic conditions who underwent cognitive restructuring to reduce chronic pain intensity, were included. Eligible studies compared this intervention with a control group. We excluded studies incorporating cognitive restructuring within broader interventions, lacking statistical data, or not written in English. Study quality was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool (RoB 2). RESULTS: After reviewing 18,312 studies, we selected 11 studies published between 1991 and 2022, involving 693 participants with chronic conditions. A significant large overall effect size was found (d = 0.94, 95% CI 0.48 to 1.40). Moderation analyses revealed significant differences based on sex and study quality, with effects less pronounced among females and more substantial in higher-quality studies. CONCLUSION: Despite limitations such as statistical instability due to a small number of studies in certain moderator categories and methodological variability, this meta-analysis highlights the robust effects of cognitive restructuring on chronic pain intensity. The findings are valuable for guiding power calculations and future research expectations. Clinically, these results support the significant effect of cognitive restructuring in both individual and group settings, regardless of age, particularly when facilitated by teams that include psychologists.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In ultrasound guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) surgery, it is necessary to transmit sound waves at different frequencies simultaneously using two transducers: one for the HIFU therapy and another for the ultrasound imaging guidance. In this specific setting, real-time monitoring of non-invasive surgery is challenging due to severe contamination of the ultrasound guiding images by strong acoustic interference from the HIFU sonication. METHODS: This paper proposed the use of a deep learning (DL) solution, specifically a diffusion implicit model, to suppress the HIFU interference. We considered the images contaminated with HIFU interference as low-resolution images, and those free from interference as high-resolution. While suppressing HIFU interference using the diffusion implicit (HIFU-Diff) model, the task was transformed into generating a high-resolution image through a series of forward diffusion steps and reverse sampling. A series of ex-vivo and in-vivo experiments, conducted under various parameters, were designed to validate the performance of the proposed network. RESULTS: Quantitative evaluation and statistical analysis demonstrated that the HIFU-Diff network achieved superior performance in reconstructing interference-free images under a variety of ex-vivo and in-vivo conditions, compared to the most commonly used notch filtering and the recent 1D FUS-Net deep learning network. The HIFU-Diff maintains high performance with 'unseen' datasets from separate experiments, and its superiority is more pronounced under strong HIFU interferences and in complex in-vivo situations. Furthermore, the reconstructed interference-free images can also be used for quantitative attenuation imaging, indicating that the network preserves acoustic characteristics of the ultrasound images. CONCLUSIONS: With the proposed technique, HIFU therapy and the ultrasound imaging can be conducted simultaneously, allowing for real-time monitoring of the treatment process. This capability could significantly enhance the safety and efficacy of the non-invasive treatment across various clinical applications. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first diffusion-based model developed for HIFU interference suppression.

ABSTRACT

It is widely accepted that milk provides the greatest relief from capsaicin burn, an effect typically attributed to its fat content and temperature. Previously, Lawless et al. reported partitioning lipophilic capsaicin in fat reduces burn, whereas Green showed lower temperature reduces burn. Recent research shows that dairy and nondairy proteins also reduce capsaicin burn, suggesting that multiple factors reduce oral burn from chilies. Here, we investigated the effectiveness of palate cleansers with varied viscosities, temperatures, and sugar, fat, and protein content. Specifically, we tested ice cream, Italian ice, yogurt, lassi, cold water (4°C), and warm water (37°C). Participants rinsed with a 5 ppm capsaicin solution, followed by a palate cleanser, before rating burn intensity continuously for 2 min on a general Labeled Magnitude Scale. Inspection of the time-intensity (TI) curves revealed all palate cleansers performed better than warm water. Italian ice performed on par with cold water, which did better than yogurt. Pairwise comparisons showed that ice cream and lassi had significantly lower burn ratings at some time points relative to warm or cold water. We extracted scaffolding parameters for each TI curve, finding that ice cream and lassi had the lowest areas-under-the-curve and the greatest percent decrease from their maxima, with ice cream performing slightly better in both parameters. These data support the view that it is not just one characteristic of a product, but rather a combination of product factors that reduce oral burn, including fat content, protein content, and temperature. More research is required to determine the relative weight of these factors in combination, given the multiple mechanisms underlying burn reduction.

ABSTRACT

The widespread adoption of smartphones coupled with advancements in artificial intelligence has significantly propelled the use of intelligent personal assistants (IPAs). These digital assistants have become indispensable for many users, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Employing coviance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM) and analyzing data from 260 participants, this study explores the key factors influencing IPA usage intensity. Contrary to expectations, affective risk perception showed no significant impact on either IPA usage or parasocial interaction during the pandemic. In stark contrast, cabin fever syndrome significantly influenced both IPA usage and parasocial interaction, underscoring the role of environmental and psychological stressors in shaping technology use. Furthermore, loneliness was found to significantly enhance parasocial interaction with IPAs, though it did not affect usage intensity. The findings highlight a substantial connection between parasocial interaction and IPA usage intensity, suggesting that users who engage in human-like interactions with IPAs tend to use them more extensively. These insights not only deepen our understanding of how IPAs are utilized during health crises but also point to potential directions for developing IPAs that are more responsive to users' emotional and social needs.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To assess pain outcomes, stress levels and body awareness among patients with chronic pain and explore potential associations between these variables. Design: An explorative study. Methods: Patients with chronic pain in primary and specialist care were assessed regarding pain intensity using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS; 0-10 point scale) and stress levels using the Stress and Crisis Inventory (SCI-93; 0-140). To assess body awareness, multidimensional assessment of interoceptive awareness (MAIA; 0-5), a widely used self-report measure of interoceptive bodily awareness was used. Results: Participants (n = 42) reported an average NRS of 4.4, elevated stress levels and low body awareness. Stress levels were moderately correlated with pain intensity (r = 0.53; p < 0.001; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.25-0.72) and number of pain sites (r = 0.58; p < 0.001; 95% CI 0.32-0.76). The regression analysis showed that pain outcomes predicted stress level scores and explained almost 50% of variance (R 2 = 0.47, p < 0.001). Moreover, shorter pain duration predicted a higher body awareness (p = 0.04). Conclusion: In patients with chronic pain, high pain intensity and multiple painful sites seem to be associated with impaired stress regulation. The patients had low body awareness, which was negatively influenced by pain duration.

ABSTRACT

The cultivation of medical cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) is expanding in controlled environments, driven by evolving governmental regulations for healthcare supply. Increasing inflorescence weight and plant specialized metabolite (PSM) concentrations is critical, alongside maintaining product consistency. Medical cannabis is grown under different spectra and photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFD), the interaction between spectrum and PPFD on inflorescence weight and PSM attracts attention by both industrialists and scientists. Plants were grown in climate-controlled rooms without solar light, where four spectra were applied: two low-white spectra (7B-20G-73R/Narrow and 6B-19G-75R/2Peaks), and two high-white (15B-42G-43R/Narrow and 17B-40G-43R/Broad) spectra. The low-white spectra differed in red wavelength peaks (100% 660 nm, versus 50:50% of 640:660 nm), the high-white spectra differed in spectrum broadness. All four spectra were applied at 600 and 1200 µmol m-2 s-1. Irrespective of PPFD, white light with a dual red peak of 640 and 660 nm (6B-19G-75R/2Peaks) increased inflorescence weight, compared to white light with a single red peak of 660 nm (7B-20G-73R/Narrow) (tested at P = 0.1); this was associated with higher total plant dry matter production and a more open plant architecture, which likely enhanced light capture. At high PPFD, increasing white fraction and spectrum broadness (17B-40G-43R/Broad) produced similar inflorescence weights compared to white light with a dual red peak of 640 and 660 nm (6B-19G-75R/2Peaks). This was caused by an increase of both plant dry matter production and dry matter partitioning to the inflorescences. No spectrum or PPFD effects on cannabinoid concentrations were observed, although at high PPFD white light with a dual red peak of 640 and 660 nm (6B-19G-75R/2Peaks) increased terpenoid concentrations compared to the other spectra. At low PPFD, the combination of white light with 640 and 660 nm increased photosynthetic efficiency compared with white light with a single red peak of 660nm, indicating potential benefits in light use efficiency and promoting plant dry matter production. These results indicate that the interaction between spectrum and PPFD influences plant dry matter production. Dividing the light energy in the red waveband over both 640 and 660 nm equally shows potential in enhancing photosynthesis and plant dry matter production.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging pollutants, causing potential threats to aquatic ecosystems and serious concern in aggregating with microalgae (critical primary producers). When entering water bodies, MPs are expected to sink below the water surface and disperse into varying water compartments with different light intensities. However, how light influences the aggregation processes of algal cells onto MPs and the associated molecular coupling mechanisms and derivative risks remain poorly understood. Herein, we investigated the aggregation behavior between polystyrene microplastics (mPS, 10 µm) and Chlorella pyrenoidosa under low (LL, 15 µmol·m-2·s-1), normal (NL, 55 µmol·m-2·s-1), and high light (HL, 150 µmol·m-2·s-1) conditions from integrated in vivo and in silico assays. The results indicated that under LL, the mPS particles primarily existed independently, whereas under NL and HL, C. pyrenoidosa tightly bounded to mPS by secreting more protein-rich extracellular polymeric substances. Infrared spectroscopy analysis and density functional theory calculation revealed that the aggregation formation was driven by non-covalent interaction involving van der Waals force and hydrogen bond. These processes subsequently enhanced the deposition and adherence capacity of mPS and relieved its phytotoxicity. Overall, our findings advance the practical and theoretical understanding of the ecological impacts of MPs in complex aquatic environments.

ABSTRACT

To detect and analyze the changes of microorganisms in expressed prostatic secretion (EPS) of patients with IIIB prostatitis before and after low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) treatment, and to explore the mechanism of LIPUS in the treatment of chronic prostatitis (CP). 25 patients (study power was estimated using a Dirichlet-multinomial approach and reached 96.5% at α = 0.05 using a sample size of 25) with IIIB prostatitis who were effective in LIPUS treatment were divided into two groups before and after LIPUS treatment. High throughput second-generation sequencing technique was used to detect and analyze the relative abundance of bacterial 16 s ribosomal variable regions in EPS before and after treatment. The data were analyzed by bioinformatics software and database, and differences with P < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Beta diversity analysis showed that there was a significant difference between groups (P = 0.046). LEfSe detected four kinds of characteristic microorganisms in the EPS of patients with IIIB prostatitis before and after LIPUS treatment. After multiple comparisons among groups by DESeq2 method, six different microorganisms were found. LIPUS may improve patients' clinical symptoms by changing the flora structure of EPS, stabilizing and affecting resident bacteria or opportunistic pathogens.
