ABSTRACT

A hybrid organic monolithic column made of poly(lauryl methacrylate-co-1,6-hexanediol dimethacrylate) and the metal-organic framework MIL-68(Al) was prepared for the first time. The column was used in capillary liquid chromatography, both in isocratic and gradient elution modes. Separation performance towards small molecules of different chemical nature (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, alkylbenzenes, phenols, etc.) was studied. Monte Carlo simulations were made to both select the proper precursors to obtain empty metal-organic framework micropores in the monolithic polymer and also, to analyze the potential free access of the studied analytes into the micropores (necessary to improve mass transfer and column efficiency). The hereby synthesized metal-organic framework microcrystals allowed obtaining homogeneous hybrid monolithic columns. Adding of MIL-68(Al) (1030 m2 g-1 BET specific surface area) increased the surface area from 3.9 m2 g-1 for the parent monolith to 18.2 m2 g-1 for the hybrid column containing 8 mg mL-1 of the microcrystals. Chromatographic performance of this new column was evaluated by studying retention factors, resolution, and plate counts at room temperature. Different compounds, not completely resolved in the parent monolith, were partially or completely separated after metal-organic framework addition. Using the monolithic column with only 2 mg mL-1 of MIL-68(Al), five alkylbenzenes were completely separated with very symmetrical peak shapes, resolution factors up to 3.60 and plate counts of 4300 plates m-1 for n-hexylbenzene. This value is higher than those obtained by other authors who used organic monolithic columns with embedded metal-organic frameworks to perform separations at room temperature. Additionally, nine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were partially or completely resolved in gradient elution mode. The hybrid monolithic columns exhibited very good intra-day (%RSD=1.9), inter-day (%RSD=2.6), and column-to-column (%RSD=4.3) reproducibility values. Easy and fast column preparation, and versatility to efficiently separate several compounds of different chemical nature in isocratic and gradient mode, makes this new hybrid column a very good option for the analysis of small molecules in capillary (or nano) HPLC.

ABSTRACT

Low- middle-income countries (LMICs) are facing challenges for reaching outstanding performance on indicators related to wellbeing during the first 1000 days of life, therefore it is expected to observe difficulties for improving their Human Capital Index (HCI). These come from the impact of inadequate antenatal care, maternal short stature, inadequate breastfeeding, prematurity, low birthweight, small for gestational age newborns, and pregnancy in adolescent years on human capital from the first thousand days of life to long term on life. Therefore, the aim of this study was to implement a non-systematic review of the existing literature between February 2000 and October 2022 using MeSH terms related to each factor. Results: in LMICs antenatal care does not meet the required goals. High rate of adolescent pregnancies, and lower maternal stature are being reported; 6.5 million newborns in LMICs are small for gestational age, 50% LBW newborns are preterm. Exclusive breastfeeding is low in LMICs: 28-70%. Survival, schooling, and health are strongly associated with growth and adult height showing the impact of the disadvantages experienced in early life over HC. We can conclude: the determinants of good health in the first 1000 days of life do not meet the goals needed to improve growth and health during this critical period of life in LMICs, leading to important obstacles for achieving adequate health conditions and reaching an optimal HCI(AU)

ABSTRACT

The development of new materials that have a high capacity to remove pollutants in water-based media is becoming increasingly important because of the serious contamination of water and the negative impact on biodiversity and public health. The presence of glyphosate in water, the most widely used herbicide worldwide, has triggered alerts owing to the collateral effects it may cause on human health. The main objective of the present study was to investigate the potential of the hybrid material MIL-53(Al)@RH for the adsorption of glyphosate in aqueous solution. The material was obtained following the methodology of MIL-53(Al) synthesis in the presence of hydrolyzed rice husk assisted by microwave. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to evaluate the adsorbent dosage, pH0 solution effect, contact time, adsorbate concentration, and temperature effect. The results demonstrated that a maximum adsorption capacity of 296.95 mg g-1, at pH0 4 with a ratio of 0.04 g MIL-53(Al)@RH/50 mL of solution, was achieved in 30 min. The Avrami and pseudo-second order models appropriately described the adsorption kinetics and the equilibrium by Langmuir and Sips models. The enthalpy changes (ΔH°) determined propose an endothermic reaction governed by chemisorption, corroborating the kinetic and equilibrium settings. Hydrogen bonds, π*-π interactions, and complexation between the metal centers of MIL-53(Al) and the anionic groups of glyphosate were postulated to be involved as adsorption mechanisms. Finally, for practical application, MIL-53(Al)@RH was packed in a column for a fixed-bed test which revealed that the hybrid can remove glyphosate with an adsorption capacity of 76.304 mg L-1, utilizing 90% of the bed.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Mil Días (A Thousand Days) is a programme for the first thousand days of life, from gestation to 2 years of age, targeted at highly vulnerable children and/or mothers and pregnant women. The programme was implemented in August 2015 in the municipality of San Miguel, in Argentina. Mil Días is designed in a holistic and intersectoral way. The main form of intervention is through home visits, but other benefits are available depending on the 51 vulnerability criteria by which participants are admitted to the programme, most of which are related to health issues. Exits of the programme occur when the mother and/or child have reversed the deprivation/s of the entrance-criteria. METHODS: This paper provides an analysis of the programme's primary data between August 2015 and May 2019, with a total of 1,111 programme participants. First, we perform a statistical analysis of the targeted population of the programme. Second, using a logistic regression, we study factors associated to the withdrawal from the programme. Third, using survival analysis, we study the correlates of time to graduation from the programme. RESULTS: We find that the programme is well-targeted, as participants exhibit higher deprivation levels than those exhibited by beneficiaries of social programmes in general in the same municipality. We also find that programme participants in situations of most extreme vulnerability are more likely to abandon the programme and that successful exits from the programme take longer for more complex cases. CONCLUSIONS: Mil Días-San Miguel is a programme for early childhood development in Argentina, which was pioneer when it was first introduced. It is well targeted and exhibits encouraging results despite complex cases taking longer to sucessfully exit the programme. In addition, the poorest poor participants are more likely to abandon the programme and so additional actions could be taken to retain them, as intended by the 'Leave No One Behind' 2030 commitment.

ABSTRACT

Composite materials based on titania nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) and three metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) called MIL-53 (Fe) ((Fe (III) (OH) (1,4-BDC)), MILs (Materials Institute Lavoisier)), MIL-100 (Fe) (Fe3O(H2O)2OH(BTC)2), and Fe-BTC (iron-benzenetricarboxylate) with different percentages of TiO2 NPs (0.5, 1, and 2.5% wt.) were synthesized using the solvothermal method and used as photocatalytic materials in the degradation of two dyes (Orange II and Reactive Black 5 (RB5)). The pristine and composite materials were characterized with X-ray diffraction, Raman, UV-Vis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The 2.5TiO2/MIL-100 composite material showed the best results for the degradation of both dyes (Reactive Black 5 and Orange II dye, 99% and 99.5% degradation in 105 and 150 min, respectively). The incorporation of TiO2 NPs into MOFs can decrease the recombination of the change carrier in the MOF, increasing the photocatalytic activity of a pristine MOF. Results therefore indicated that the synthesized MOF nanocomposites have good potential for wastewater treatment.

ABSTRACT

Acute systemic inflammation can lead to life-threatening organ dysfunction. In patients with sepsis, systemic inflammation is triggered in response to infection, but in other patients, a systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is triggered by non-infectious events. IL-6 is a major mediator of inflammation, including systemic inflammatory responses. In homeostatic conditions, when IL-6 engages its membrane-bound receptor on myeloid cells, it promotes pro-inflammatory cytokine production, phagocytosis, and cell migration. However, under non-physiologic conditions, such as SIRS and sepsis, leucocyte dysfunction could modify the response of these cells to IL-6. So, our aim was to evaluate the response to IL-6 of monocytes from patients diagnosed with SIRS or sepsis. We observed that monocytes from patients with SIRS, but not from patients with sepsis, produced significantly more TNF-α than monocytes from healthy volunteers, after stimulation with IL-6. Monocytes from SIRS patients had a significantly increased baseline phosphorylation of the p65 subunit of NF-κB, with no differences in STAT3 phosphorylation or SOCS3 levels, compared with monocytes from septic patients, and this increased phosphorylation was maintained during the IL-6 activation. We found no significant differences in the expression levels of the membrane-bound IL-6 receptor, or the serum levels of IL-6, soluble IL-6 receptor, or soluble gp130, between patients with SIRS and patients with sepsis. Our results suggest that, during systemic inflammation in the absence of infection, IL-6 promotes TNF-α production by activating NF-κB, and not the canonical STAT3 pathway.

ABSTRACT

Asian soybean rust is an aggressive disease and chemical control must be handled assertively to minimize productivity damage. The objective was to evaluate systemic fungicides and multisite mancozeb, combined or not, and the effects on disease control and soybean yield, cv. 'BMX Lança'. The work was conducted in the field in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 crops, in a randomized complete block design, with four replications. The following treatments were evaluated: T+P) trifloxystrobin + prothioconazole; A+B) azoxystrobin + benzovindiflupyr; T+P+MB) trifloxystrobin + prothioconazole + mancozeb; A+B+MB) azoxystrobin + benzovindiflupyr + mancozeb; MB) mancozeb; and Control (without fungicide application). After the occurrence of the first symptoms of the disease, the severity (%) was evaluated in five trifolia per plot, every seven days, making it possible to calculate the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC). The yield components and productivity (kg ha-1) were also evaluated. In both crops, the combination of systemic fungicides and mancozeb reduced the severity (%) and progress of Asian rust, reaching a control above 81%. Treatment with trifloxystrobin + prothioconazole + mancozeb (T+P+MB) obtained the highest percentages of control (94.5% -2016/17,and 93.7% -2017/18) of Asian rust, and provided, in the 2016/17 crop, productivity at 15 sc ha-1, in relation to the fungicide applied alone (T+P). The combination of systemic fungicides and mancozeb, as proposed in this work, reduces the severity and progress of Asian rust and ensures the maintenance of the productive potential of the soybean.(AU)

ABSTRACT

BRCA-1 is a nuclear protein involved in DNA repair, transcriptional regulation, and cell cycle control. Its involvement in other cellular processes has been described. Here, we aimed to investigate the role of BRCA-1 in macrophages M(LPS), M(IL-4), and tumor cell-induced differentiation. We used siRNAs to knockdown BRCA-1 in RAW 264.7 macrophages exposed to LPS, IL-4, and C6 glioma cells conditioned medium (CMC6), and evaluated macrophage differentiation markers and functional phagocytic activity as well as DNA damage and cell survival in the presence and absence of BRCA-1. LPS and CMC6, but not by IL-4, increased DNA damage in macrophages, and this effect was more pronounced in BRCA-1-depleted cells, including M(IL-4). BRCA-1 depletion impaired expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, TNF-α and IL-6, and reduced the phagocytic activity of macrophages in response to LPS. In CMC6-induced differentiation, BRCA-1 knockdown inhibited TNF-α and IL-6 expression which was accompanied by upregulation of the anti-inflammatory markers IL-10 and TGF-ß and reduced phagocytosis. In contrast, M(IL-4) phenotype was not affected by BRCA-1 status. Molecular docking predicted that the conserved BRCA-1 domain BRCT can interact with the p65 subunit of NF-κB. Immunofluorescence assays showed that BRCA-1 and p65 co-localize in the nucleus of LPS-treated macrophages and reporter gene assay showed that depletion of BRCA-1 decreased LPS and CMC6-induced NF-κB transactivation. IL-4 had no effect upon NF-κB. Taken together, our findings suggest a role of BRCA-1 in macrophage differentiation and phagocytosis induced by LPS and tumor cells secretoma, but not IL-4, in a mechanism associated with inhibition of NF-κB.

ABSTRACT

The aqueous extract of Aristolochia triangularis leaves showed activity against Artemia salina larvae, with an LD50 of 370.6 µg/mL. In experiments with Allium cepa seeds, the extract caused a 51.26% reduction in the germination index, inhibited mean root growth, and was cytotoxic at concentrations of 668 and 2,000 µg/mL. Its antioxidant activity was additionally assessed in this research and the ferric reducing antioxidant power value was found to be 391.2 µM/g. Such health-beneficial property can be attributed partly to the total phenolic content, spectrophotometrically determined as 52.67 mg/g. The occurrence of cytotoxicity suggested caution when consuming teas from A. triangularis leaves for medicinal purposes, and equally reveals the need for further studies to investigate their adverse effects.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Photocatalytically active composites comprising potassium poly(heptazine imide) (PHIK) and a Ti-based metal-organic framework (MOF, MIL-125-NH2) are prepared in situ by simply dispersing both materials in water. The driving forces of composite formation are the electrostatic interactions between the solids and the diffusion of potassium ions from PHIK to MIL-125-NH2. This mechanism implies that other composites of poly(heptazine imide) salts and different MOFs bearing positive surface charge can potentially be obtained in a similar fashion. The suggested strategy thus opens a new avenue for the facile synthesis of such materials. The composites are shown to have a superior photocatalytic activity in Rhodamine B degradation under blue light irradiation. The reaction rate is doubled compared to that of pure MOF compound and is 7 times higher than the activity of the pristine PHIK. The results of the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) investigations and the analysis of the electronic structures of the solids suggest the electron transfer from MIL-125-NH2 to PHIK in the composite. The possible pathways for the dye degradation and the rationalization of the increased activity of the composites are elaborated.

ABSTRACT

Silicon is considered a beneficial element, and despite not having his definition of essential mineral nutrition of plants has been widely used in research. The objective was to assess the effect of foliar fertilization with silicon levels in soils in the cultivation of the rocket. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in the DRN / Soil Science, UNESP / FCA, Botucatu-SP, from April 15 to May 20, 2008. The experimental design was randomized blocks in factorial 2x5 (two solos and five doses of silicon). At the end of the experiment, evaluated at the point of harvest to plant height (cm), leaf area (LA), total fresh mass (TFM), total dry matter (TDM), leaf area ratio (LAR), specific weight Leaf (PEF), amount of water in the shoot (AWS) and content and accumulation of silicon in the leaves. It was concluded that silicon had no influence on the agronomic characteristics of the rocket and changes were only to soil type.

ABSTRACT

Achillea millefolium L., known as yarrow, is an herbaceous, rhizomatous and perennial plant. Its medicinal importance is attributed to antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antitumoral, analgesical and antioxidant activities. The effect of light availability and nitrogen on growth and production of this species is little known. The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth and production of photosynthetic pigments in A. millefolium L. grown under different levels of shading and nitrogen levels. Plants were cultivated under three nitrogen levels (0, 75 and 150kg urea ha-1) and subjected to two levels of shading 0% (full light) and 75% (75% black). The experimental design was delineated in randomized blocks with four replicates in a factorial 3 x 2 (nitrogen levels x levels of shading). The shading influenced most parameters evaluated, causing a significant reduction in dry mass accumulation of shoot (stem + leave + flower), stem, leaves and flowers and increase in levels of chlorophyll a, b, total and carotenoids. Results suggest that Achillea millefolium L. has adaptated to low light intensity, due to changes in leaf traits related to photosynthetic pigments content.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this work was to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of aqueous extracts and essential oil of Achillea millefolium on mycelial growth, sporolution and spores germination of Corynespora cassiicola, as well as peroxidase activity in cucumber plants. For this, crude extract (1; 5; 10; 20 and 25%) was incorporated into potato dextrose agar medium (PDA), and essential oil (20, 40, 60, 100 and 200 mL) was distributed over the surface of the PDA. The mycelial growth was measured daily for 7 days. In the in vivo test, cucumber plants were sprayed with crude extracts at concentrations 1; 10 and 25%, and Saccharomyces cereviseae 20% (control), 4 and 2 days before and the same time as inoculation with C. cassiicola. The severity of disease and peroxidase activity were evaluated. For crude extract, neither mycelial growth nor spore germination and sporulation was inhibited at any of the tested concentrations. In the treatments with essential oil there was inhibition up to 63% of the mycelial growth. In the sporulation and spores germination the inhibition was 100% and 98%, respectively, for 200uL of EO. In the control of the disease the mosteffective treatment was the crude extract 25% when carried out at the same time as the inoculation. In the evaluated period, no peroxidase activity was found.

ABSTRACT

Helminthosporiose is caused by the fungus Exserohilum turcicum and represents one of the main diseases in popcorn grown in Brazil. Due to its characteristics, such as plant size, planting area extension and economic profitability, the use of genetic resistance and chemical control has constituted the main procedure against such disease. The use of pesticides in agriculture has resulted in risks to the human health and frequent damages to the environment. Thus, the fungitoxic effect of plant extracts of Achillea millefolium (yarrow), Cymbopogon citratus (lemon grass), Artemisia camphorata (camphor) and Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) on the mycelial growth of E. turcicum was evaluated by using two culture media (PDA - potato dextrose agar, and LCH - lactose-casein hydrolysate) in order to set alternative methods for controlling helminthosporiose. Rosemary and camphor extracts led to higher mycelial growth inhibition in both culture media, whereas yarrow and lemon grass extracts stimulated mycelial growth in LCH medium.
