ABSTRACT
SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: Female genital mutilation/cutting impacts over 200 million women globally and is linked to obstetric complications as well as long-term urogynecological and psychosexual issues that are frequently overlooked and inadequately addressed. This study aimed to assess the impact of female genital mutilation/cutting on urinary incontinence. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the gynecology department of the Research Hospital located in the Nyala rural region of Sudan. The participants were interviewed to gather socio-demographic and background information. In addition, they received a thorough gynecological examination to evaluate the presence and type of female genital mutilation/cutting. The Incontinence Impact Questionnaire and the Urogenital Distress Inventory were applied to the group with female genital mutilation/cutting and the control group without female genital mutilation/cutting to evaluate urinary incontinence and related discomfort. Subsequently, the scores of both participant groups were compared. RESULTS: The study compared age, weight, height, BMI, gravida, parity, and sexual intercourse averages between groups. The mean Urogenital Distress Inventory-6 and Incontinence Impact Questionnaire-7 scores of individuals who underwent mutilation were higher than those of individuals who did not undergo mutilation (p<0.001). Notably, participants subjected to infibulation exhibited significantly higher average scores on both measures in contrast with the other groups (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: A higher proportion of mutilated participants, specifically those with infibulation, are afflicted with symptoms of incontinence.
ABSTRACT
Few studies considered the anatomy of the nerve plexuses and musculature associated with them in ectothermic sauropsids. Based on differentiated Sudan Black B staining and conventional dissections, we describe the neuroanatomy of the brachial plexus, its main associated nerves, and muscles. For that, representatives of the genera Diplolaemus, Liolaemus, Phymaturus, and Tropidurus were selected. Based on this, potentially useful characters for phylogenetic analysis were described. Our results show that the brachial plexus can be formed by four, five, or six nerve branches. The brachial flexor trunk, circumflex, interosseous, median, radial, subscapulocoracoid, supracoracoid, and ulnar nerves were identified. Regarding the muscles innervated by the main nerves, the following muscles were identified: biceps brachii, deltoideus scapularis, latissimus dorsi, levator scapulae, pectoralis, serratus thoracis, trapezius, triceps longus caudalis, and triceps longus lateralis. Phylogenetic analyzes revealed 31 potential synapomorphies. There exists evidence that neuroanatomy studies in a phylogenetic context could provide useful information helping to elucidate the relationships between taxonomic groups.

Aim: Correct orientation of the occlusal plane plays a vital role in achieving the perfect occlusal balance and function of complete dentures. This study aimed to evaluate the most reliable posterior reference point of the ala-tragus line (ATL) concerning occlusal plane (OP) in a sample of the dentate Sudanese population. Materials and Methods: A total of 150 subjects with healthy and well-aligned permanent teeth were randomly selected. Right lateral profile photographs were taken with subjects having a fox plane placed intra-orally, contacting the occlusal plane. Reference points corresponding to inferior, middle, and superior borders of the tragus and inferior border of the ala of the nose were marked on photographs. The angles between the lines were measured using the Auto-CAD software program, and the most parallel relationship was determined. Descriptive statistics in terms of means and standard deviations were presented. Independent t-test and one-way ANOVA tests were used to compare as appropriate. A p-value < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The mean angle formed by the OP and ATL was 8.5±3.69º for the superior level, 4.68±3.13º for the middle line, and 2.89±2.57º for the inferior line. A significant difference was found between the means of the three angles (p< 0.001), while no significant difference (p> 0.05) was found between both genders regarding the measured angles. Conclusions: The line joining the inferior border of the ala of the nose with the inferior border of the tragus of the ear was the most reliable line in terms of parallelism to determine the occlusal plane orientation.
Antecedentes: La orientación correcta del plano oclusal juega un papel vital para lograr el equilibrio oclusal perfecto y la función de las prótesis completas. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar el punto de referencia posterior más confiable de la línea ala-trago (ATL) con respecto al plano oclusal (OP) en una muestra de la población dentada de Sudán. Materiales y Métodos: Se seleccionaron aleatoriamente un total de 150 sujetos con dientes permanentes sanos y bien alineados. Se tomaron fotografías de perfil lateral derecho de sujetos a los que se les colocó un plano de zorro intraoralmente, en contacto con el plano oclusal. En las fotografías se marcaron los puntos de referencia correspondientes a los bordes inferior, medio y superior del trago y al borde inferior del ala de la nariz. Los ángulos entre las líneas se midieron utilizando el programa de software Auto-CAD y se determinó la relación más paralela. Se presentaron estadísticas descriptivas en términos de medias y desviaciones estándar. Se utilizaron prueba-t independiente y prueba ANOVA unidireccional para las comparaciones, según correspondiera. Se consideró significativo un valor de p<0,05. Resultados: El ángulo medio formado por OP y ATL fue de 8,5±3,69º para el nivel superior, 4,68±3,13º para la línea media y 2,89±2,57º para la línea inferior. Se encontró una diferencia significativa entre las medias de los tres ángulos (p< 0,001), mientras que no se encontró diferencia significativa (p>0,05) entre ambos sexos con respecto a los ángulos medidos. Conclusión: La línea que une el borde inferior del ala de la nariz con el borde inferior del trago de la oreja fue la línea más confiable en términos de paralelismo para determinar la orientación del plano oclusal.

HIV-1 genetic diversity and drug resistance mutations remain public health challenges especially in regions where treatment is limited. The aim of this study was to characterize the HIV-1 integrase (IN) subtype and the possible occurrence of drug-resistance mutations or polymorphisms in resource-poor settings in South Sudan. Dried blood spots from integrase inhibitor treatment (Integrase strand transfer inhibitor [INSTI]) naïve HIV-1 infected patients were subjected to DNA amplification and direct sequencing of integrase genes. The sequences were interpreted for drug resistance according to the Stanford algorithm and the International AIDS Society-USA guidelines. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that HIV-1 subtype D, C, G, A1, and recombinant forms accounted for 40%, 10%, 13.3%, 23.4%, and 13.3%, respectively. Furthermore, inter-subtype recombinants were interspersed within viral strains sampled in other African countries, highlighting complex transmission dynamics within a mobile host population. A total of 78 of 288 (27%) amino acid IN positions presented at least one polymorphism each. Major INSTI resistance mutations were absent, however, polymorphic accessory mutations at positions M50ILR (26.6%) and L74I (3.3%) were detected. Despite the limited size of the study population, our findings underscore the need for monitoring minor and natural polymorphisms that may influence the outcome of treatment regimens.

Mycetoma is a localized, chronic, granulomatous disease that can be caused by fungi (eumycetoma) or bacteria (actinomycetoma). Of the 70 different causative agents implicated in mycetoma worldwide, Actinomadura madurae is the only one that causes multiple cases on all continents. Recently, new Actinomadura species were described as causative agents of human mycetoma. One of these new causative agents was Actinomadura mexicana, which was identified in Latin America. Here we demonstrate that this causative agent is not confined to Latin America and that it is also a causative agent of actinomycetoma in Sudan. The disease was managed by antibiotic treatment alone and resulted in complete cure after 6 months of treatment, which is quick when compared with actinomycetoma cases caused by other Actinomadura species.

Sudan I is a synthetic-azo dye commonly used to adulterate foods to increase sensory appearance. However, it is banned due to its carcinogenic, mutagenic and genotoxic properties, which represent a serious risk to human health. Thus, this paper proposes a feasibility study to identify and quantify Sudan I dye in ketchup samples using colour histograms (obtained from digital images) and multivariate analysis. The successive projections algorithm coupled with linear discriminant analysis (SPA-LDA) classified correctly all samples, while the partial least squares coupled with SPA for interval selection (iSPA-PLS) quantified adequately the adulterant, attaining values of RMSEP of 11.64 mg kg-1, R2 of 0.96, RPD of 5.28, REP of 13.63% and LOD of 39.45 mg kg-1. Therefore, the proposed methodology provides a simple, fast, inexpensive, promising analytical tool for the screening of both the quality and safety of ketchup samples. As a consequence, it can help to protect the consumer's health.

Only few published studies that describe the neuroanatomy of lizards. Here, we describe the neuroanatomy of several Iguanian species belonging to three families (species of Liolaemus and Phymaturus belonging to Liolaemidae, Tropidurus and Stenocercus as representatives of Tropiduridae, and Diplolaemus as a representative of Leiosauridae). Based on Sudan Black B staining and conventional dissections, the neuroanatomy of the lumbosacral region is described. Among the most outstanding results is the existence of a neuronal pattern of the lumbosacral plexus characteristic of Liolaemidae. In addition, it was found that in the genus Liolaemus the lumbosacral plexus is composed of five pairs of spinal nerves while in Phymaturus, Tropidurus, Stenocercus and Diplolaemus is composed from five to six pairs of spinal nerves (from pre-sacral, sacral, and caudal vertebrae). We find differences in the origin of the spinal nerves that constitute the plexus. In some cases, the pattern of nerves involved includes even the caudal vertebrae. Variation among taxa related to the zeugopodial innervation is described, and the homology of these nervous branches is discussed. Sexual differences were found in some species studied. Based on our results and available literature, we found three different patterns of innervation of the zeugopodium. The major contribution of this study is to provide a detailed description of lumbosacral plexus nerves pathways from their origins at the vertebral column to the muscles that they innervate.

Proteus species are found in the human intestinal tract as part of normal flora. Proteus species are also found in multiple environmental habitats, including long-term care facilities and hospitals, and can cause both community and nosocomial infections. For a long time Proteus was known to be susceptible to beta-lactam antibiotics but nowadays they become resistant. The aim of this study was to detect the Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) TEM and CTX-M genes in 90 Proteus species isolated from urine and wound swabs, obtained from different hospitals in Khartoum state, Sudan, from January to August 2018. Antimicrobial sensitivity was carried out using the following set of antibiotics: amoxiclav, ceftazidime, gentamicin, meropenem, cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin, amoxicillin, ceftriaxone and cotrimoxazole. ESBL producing strains were detected by double disc diffusion synergy test and the resistance genes TEM and CTX-M were detected by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Antibiotic resistance was found: amoxicillin 40 percent, ceftazidime 25.6 percent, ceftriaxone 23.3 percent, gentamicin 22.2 percent, cotrimoxazole 21.1 percent, and cefotaxime 18.9 percent. Most of the isolates were sensitive to meropenem 92.2 percent and ciprofloxacin 86.7 percent. In double-disk diffusion synergy test, 20 isolates (22.2 percent) were found to be positive for ESBL. The PCR demonstrated that TEM gene was present in 18 isolates (90 percent). It was present alone in 11 isolates (55 percent) and in combination with CTX-M gene in seven isolates (35 percent). The percentage of ESBL producing strains of Proteus was 23.5 percent. This percentage is a bit lower than in previous studies in Sudan. Las especies de Proteus se encuentran en el tracto intestinal humano y forman parte de su flora normal. También se localizan en el medio ambiente y otros hábitats, incluyendo hospitales y diversas instituciones de salud, provocando tanto infecciones en la comunidad como nosocomiales. Durante mucho tiempo, las especies de Proteus fueron susceptibles a los antibióticos betalactámicos, pero actualmente se han tornado resistentes. El propósito de este estudio fue detectar genes de resistencia betalactamasas de espectro extendido (BLEE) TEM y CTX-M, en 90 especies de Proteus aisladas en orina y heridas, provenientes de diversos hospitales del estado de Jartum, Sudán, entre enero y agosto de 2018. La sensibilidad antimicrobiana se determinó con el siguiente juego de antibióticos: amoxiclav, ceftazidima, gentamicina, meropenem, cefotaxima, ciprofloxacina, amoxicilina, ceftriaxona y cotrimoxasol. Las cepas productoras de BLEE se detectaron mediante la técnica de sinergia de doble disco, y los genes de resistencia TEM y CTX-M mediante Reacción en Cadena de la Polimerasa (PCR). Se encontró resistencia antibiótica: amoxicilina 40 por ciento, ceftazidima 25,6 por ciento, ceftriaxona 23,3 por ciento, gentamicina 22,2 por ciento, cotrimoxasol 21,1 por ciento y cefotaxima 18,9 por ciento. La mayor parte de los aislamientos fueron sensibles a meropenem (92,2 por ciento) y ciprofloxacina (86,7 por ciento). Con la técnica de sinergia de doble disco se detectó positividad a BLEE en 20 aislamientos (22,2 por ciento). Mediante PCR se demostró que el gen que codifica TEM estaba presente en 18 aislamientos (90 por ciento); de forma aislada en 11 aislamientos (55 por ciento) y combinado con el gen CTX-M en los otros siete (35 por ciento). Spices are added in order to enhance the organoleptic characteristics of food and culinary dishes, making them more attractive for consumers. The use of illicit cheap colourants might be profitable along the food supply chain, posing undue risks to human health. This work evaluates the feasibility of NIR spectroscopy with chemometrics as a rapid, simple, non-destructive and affordable screening tool to determine the presence of Sudan I, II, III, IV and Para-red dyes in paprika. The dataset comprised unadulterated and adulterated samples with the five studied dyes at different concentration levels. Several multivariate classification models were built with Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and different machine learning techniques. Preliminary results show that a classifier based on only six wavenumbers is able to determine the presence of some of these dyes in food samples in levels that may represent risk to human health. Sensitivities and specificities above 90% were obtained in almost all cases. These results show the feasibility of inexpensive and portable devices that can be useful for screening out adulterated stock along the food chain supply.

BACKGROUND: Fragility can have a negative effect on health systems and people's health, and poses considerable challenges for actors implementing health programmes. However, how such programmes, in turn, affect the overall fragility of a context is rarely considered. The Swiss Red Cross has been active in South Sudan and Haiti since 2008 and 2011, respectively, and commissioned a scoping study to shed new light on this issue within the frame of a learning process launched in 2015. METHODS: The study consisted of a document review, qualitative field research undertaken between June and August 2015 in South Sudan and Haiti, and two data triangulation/validation workshops. Semi-structured key informant interviews and focus group discussions included 49 purposively sampled participants who helped build a deeper understanding of what constitutes and drives fragility in the respective countries. Moreover, interviews and focus group discussions served to grasp positive and negative effects that the Swiss Red Cross's activities may have had on the overall state of fragility in the given contexts. RESULTS: Qualitative data from the two case studies suggest that the community-based health programmes implemented in South Sudan and Haiti may have influenced certain drivers of fragility. While impacts cannot be measured or quantified in the absence of a baseline (the projects were not originally designed to mitigate overall fragility), the study nevertheless reveals entry points for designing programmes that are responsive to the overall fragility context and contain more specific elements for navigating a more sustainable pathway out of fragility. There are, however, multiple challenges, especially considering the complexity of fragile and conflict-affected contexts where a multitude of local and international actors with different goals and strategies interfere in a rapidly changing setting. CONCLUSIONS: Health programmes may not only reach their health objectives but might potentially also contribute towards mitigating overall fragility. However, considerable hurdles remain for aid agencies, especially where scope for action is limited for a single actor and where engagement with state structures is difficult. Thus, cooperation and exchange with other aid and development actors across the spectrum has to be strengthened to increase the coherence of aid policies and interventions of actors both within and across the different aid communities.

The experimental design was a randomized block with nineteen treatments and three replications. The chemical characteristics of the respective hays were analyzed 52 days after sowing and 45 and 49 regrowth days. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance, and when the F test was significant, the treatment means were compared by the Scott and Knott test at 5%. Genotypes 1013026 and 1014020 showed similar dry matter content. As for ether extract content, the highest values ranged from 2.20 to 2.66%. Higher values of minerals were observed in hybrids 1013026 and 1011005. In relation to crude protein, higher content values were reported for hybrids 1013021 and 1013020 (14.59 and 15.47% CP). When evaluating the neutral detergent fiber content, lower values varied between 56.05 and 57.07% for hybrids 1013016 and 1011009. Considering the content of acid detergent fiber, values ranged from 32.70 to 35.78%. Values of dry matter digestibility were higher than 50%. All hybrids provide quality hay, however the hybrid 1014019 showed the best nutritional value.
Este trabalho foi realizado para avaliar as características nutricionais de feno de 19 genótipos de sorgo com capim-sudão. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados composto por 19 tratamentos com três repetições. As características bromatológicas dos respectivos fenos foram analisadas após 52 dias de semeadura e 45 e 49 dias de rebrota. Os dados foram interpretados pela análise de variância e, quando o teste de F foi significativo, as médias dos tratamentos foram comparadas pelo teste de Scott e Knott em nível de 5%. Os genótipos 1013026 e 1014020 apresentaram teores semelhantes de matéria seca. Para a variável extrato etéreo os maiores valores oscilaram de 2,20 a 2,66%. Valores superiores de minerais foram evidenciados nos híbridos 1013026 e 1011005. Quanto à proteína bruta, os maiores teores foram reportados pelos híbridos 1013021 e 1013020 (14,59 e 15,47 % de PB). Ao avaliar os valores de fibra em detergente neutro, os menores teores variaram de 56,05 a 57,07% para os híbridos 1013016 e 1011009. A fibra em detergente ácido variou de 32,70 a 35,78%. Os valores de digestibilidade da matéria seca foram superiores a 50%. Todos os híbridos apresentaram feno de qualidade, no entanto o híbrido 1014019 apresentou melhor valor nutritivo.

Immunoinformatics tools were used to predict human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II-restricted T cell epitopes within the envelope glycoproteins and nucleocapsid proteins of Ebola virus (EBOV) and Sudan virus (SUDV) and the structural proteins of Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV). Selected epitopes were tested for binding to soluble HLA molecules representing 5 class II alleles (DRB1*0101, DRB1*0301, DRB1*0401, DRB1*0701, and DRB1*1501). All but one of the 25 tested peptides bound to at least one of the DRB1 alleles, and 4 of the peptides bound at least moderately or weakly to all 5 DRB1 alleles. Additional algorithms were used to design a single "string-of-beads" expression construct with 44 selected epitopes arranged to avoid creation of spurious junctional epitopes. Seventeen of these 44 predicted epitopes were conserved between the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of humans and mice, allowing initial testing in mice. BALB/c mice vaccinated with the multi-epitope construct developed statistically significant cellular immune responses to EBOV, SUDV, and VEEV peptides as measured by interferon (IFN)-γ ELISpot assays. Significant levels of antibodies to VEEV, but not EBOV, were also detected in vaccinated BALB/c mice. To assess immunogenicity in the context of a human MHC, HLA-DR3 transgenic mice were vaccinated with the multi-epitope construct and boosted with a mixture of the 25 peptides used in the binding assays. The vaccinated HLA-DR3 mice developed significant cellular immune responses to 4 of the 25 (16%) tested individual class II peptides as measured by IFN-γ ELISpot assays. In addition, these mice developed antibodies against EBOV and VEEV as measured by ELISA. While a low but significant level of protection was observed in vaccinated transgenic mice after aerosol exposure to VEEV, no protection was observed after intraperitoneal challenge with mouse-adapted EBOV. These studies provide proof of concept for the use of an informatics approach to design a multi-agent, multi-epitope immunogen and provide a basis for further testing aimed at focusing immune responses toward desired protective T cell epitopes.

Esta encuesta examinó 30 muestras de maní y 15 productos de maní de tres estados (Khartoum, Kordofan y Gadarif) de Sudán para determinar AFB1, AFB2, AFG1, and AFG2 usando cromatografía líquida de alta performance (HPLC) con detección de fluorescencia. La frecuencia de muestras de maní contaminadas con AFB1 de Khartoum, Gadarif y Kordofan fue 58,3%, 57,1%, y 66,7%, respectivamente. Ninguna muestra de maní o producto de maní estaba contaminado con AFG1 o AFG2. El límite de detecciones (LDD) y el límite de cuantificaciones (LDC) estuvieron en un rango de 0,01-0,02 ng g-1 y 0,03-0,05 ng g-1, respectivamente. Algunas muestras de maní contenían concentraciones de AFB1 por encima de los límites regulatorios UE. Las muestras más contaminadas con aflatoxinas fueron las del estado de Kordofan.
This survey examined 30 samples of groundnut and 15 groundnut products from threestates (Khartoum, Kordofan and Gadarif) of Sudan for AFB1, AFB2, AFG1, and AFG2 using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method with fluorescence detection. The frequency of contaminated groundnut samples with AFB1 from Khartoum, Gadarif and Kordofan state was 58.3%, 57.1%, and 66.7%, respectively. No sample of groundnut orground nut product was contaminated with AFG1 or AFG2. The limit of detections (LODs)and limit of quantifications (LOQs) were found to be in a range between 0.010.02 ng g−1and 0.030.05 ng g−1, respectively. Some groundnut samples contained AFB1concentrations above the EU regulatory limits. The highest contaminated samples with aflatoxins were found in Kordofan state.

ResumenLas técnicas histoquímicas hoy en día permiten seleccionar áreas de tejido y generar información confiable sobre la distribución de reservas energéticas en los moluscos bivalvos durante su ciclo de vida. Mensualmente se examinaron las gónadas y la glándula digestiva (GD) de 15 individuos recolectados entre abril 2012 y febrero 2013 por técnicas histológicas e histoquímicas de microscopia de luz, para relacionar el ciclo gametogénico y la disponibilidad de reservas energéticas con los parámetros ambientales. En el ciclo gametogénico, la proporción mensual de organismos maduros fue mayor en los machos entre agosto (40 %) y noviembre (53 %), mientras que las hembras tienden a presentar un ciclo más corto y sincronizado de liberación de gametos (septiembre 67 % y octubre 60 %). Los períodos intensos de desoves coinciden en ambos sexos (octubre-enero). Entre abril-agosto 2012 y enero-febrero 2013, se observan los valores más altos del IGl (índice de glúcido), mientras que en septiembre disminuyen y alcanzaron valores mínimos entre octubre y diciembre. El IL (índice de lípidos) presentó valores máximos en abril-2012 y febrero-2013, con un valor intermedio en agosto. Los resultados indican que las reservas de la GD presentan un patrón de movilización en relación inversa con la proliferación de los gametos de ambos sexos, vinculado directamente con la disponibilidad de nutrientes como la clorofila a y el seston orgánico.
AbstractHistochemical techniques today allow you to select areas of tissue and generate reliable information on the distribution of energy reserves in bivalve molluscs during their life cycle. The main objective of this study was to describe and relate the gametogenic cycle with the availability of energy reserves and the environmental parameters. For this, we sampled and examined the gonads and digestive glands (DG) of 15 individuals collected monthly during April 2012 and February 2013. We processed and analyzed the samples by standard histological and histochemical light microscopy techniques. Our results showed that for the gametogenic cycle, the monthly proportion of mature organisms was higher for males, between August (40 %) and November (53 %), while the females tend to have a shorter synchronized cycle and release of gametes in September (67 %) and October (60 %). The intense spawning periods in both sexes was the same (October to January). Between the periods April-August 2012 and January-February 2013, we observed the highest values of IGl and glucide index (instead, a decrease was observed in September, reaching minimum values during the period October-December). Besides, the maximum values of IL, lipid index, were observed in April-2012 and February-2013, with an intermediate value in August-2013. The results indicated that the reserves of the GD have a pattern of mobilization inversely related to the proliferation of gametes in both sexes; this was directly linked to the availability of nutrients such as chlorophyll a and the organic seston. Polymorphic genetic markers and especially microsatellite analysis can be used to investigate multiple aspects of the biology of Plasmodium species. In the current study, we characterized 7 polymorphic microsatellites in a total of 281 Plasmodium vivax isolates to determine the genetic diversity and population structure of P. vivax populations from Sudan, Madagascar, French Guiana, and Armenia. All four parasite populations were highly polymorphic with 3-32 alleles per locus. Mean genetic diversity values was 0.83, 0.79, 0.78 and 0.67 for Madagascar, French Guiana, Sudan, and Armenia, respectively. Significant genetic differentiation between all four populations was observed.

Introduction and Objective : The aim of this study was to assess the cytological changes in oral epithelium that might be induced by Sudanese homemade alcoholic beverages. Material and methods: Oral Exfoliative Cytology (OEFC) was applied to a case control study to assess the presence and severity of oral epithelial atypia (ET) in 300 subjects (150 alcohol abuse individuals (cases); 150 non-alcohol abuse individuals (controls)). All cases were using homemade alcoholic drinks, locally known as, Aragee, Marisa and others. Five patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCCs) were included as internal controls. Results: ET was detected in 7 subjects and was not observed in the remaining 293. All the 7 subjects with cytological atypia were cases. Cytological atypia were identified among those using Aragee, Marisa, and Aragee & Marisa together, representing 53%, 28.6%, 18%.4, respectively. Cytological atypia was found in all the 5 control cases with OSCCs. For the cytological atypia among alcohol abuse individuals, the adjusted OR and the 95% CI were found to be 5 (4.34-5.84) and P = 0.008. Inflammatory cells infiltrates were identified among 21 (14%) of the cases and only 12 (8%) of the controls and the adjusted OR and the 95% CI were found to be 5 (2.51-11.21) and P = 0.009. Conclusion: In view of these findings, Sudanese homemade alcoholic beverages cause oral epithelial atypical changes, which lead to oral precancerous and cancerous lesions. OEFC is a useful procedure for detection and assessment of oral ET.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has been known to occur since the 1980s on the western bank of the White Nile River (Central Sudan), 150 km south of Khartoum, and has resulted in high mortality. The most recent outbreak of the disease in this area began in 2006. Entomological surveys were carried out during May 2008, June 2010 and May and July 2011 in the White Nile area. Sandflies were collected using Centers for Disease Control light traps and sticky oil traps in the village of Kadaba and the nearby woodland. Phlebotomus females were dissected for the presence of Leishmania promastigotes. A total of 17,387 sandflies, including six species of Phlebotomus and 10 species of Sergentomyia, were identified. The Phlebotomus species recorded were Phlebotomus orientalis, Phlebotomus papatasi, Phlebotomus bergeroti, Phlebotomus duboscqi, Phlebotomus rodhaini and Phlebotomus saevus. P. orientalis was collected in both habitats. The relative abundance of P. orientalis in the woodland habitat was higher than that recorded in the village habitat. In the woodland habitat, there was a notable increase in the relative abundance of P. orientalis during the surveys conducted in 2008 and 2010 compared to 2011. None of the 311 P. orientalis females dissected were infected with Leishmania promastigotes, although relatively high parous rates were recorded in both habitats. Based on the distribution of P. orientalis recorded in this study, this species is the most likely vector of VL in the endemic focus in the White Nile area. Further investigation is required to elucidate the seasonal abundance and distribution of the vector, as well as the transmission season of VL in both habitats so that appropriate control strategies for the vector can be designed.

La esteatorrea es la pérdida de grasa en las heces. Se manifiesta clínicamente con heces fétidas, grasosas y abundantes. Se puede determinar por el método Van de Kamer, el esteatocrito acidificado y la tinción sudan III en heces. El objetivo del presente trabajo es precisar el valor normal de la prueba Sudan III en heces. Se incluyeron las muestras de heces de 2000 niños sanos (recién nacidos pre-término, recién nacidos a término, lactantes de 1-4 meses y de 5-12 meses de edad), 500 muestras por grupo. Se realizó en el Hospital Universitario de los Andes, en Mérida-Venezuela, durante los años 1999-2009. En la prueba se utilizó la tinción sudan III y el reactivo de Saathoff, con lente microscópico de 40 y se tomaron en cuenta las gotas grandes y medianas de grasa por campo. Es una investigación clínica con enfoque epidemiológico, observacional de tipo aleatoria. Del total de niños 53% fueron varones y 47% niñas. El promedio de evacuaciones por día fue de 3 en los recién nacidos, de 2 a 3 en los lactantes menores de 4 meses y de 1 a 2 en los de 5 a 12 meses de edad. El valor normal de la prueba Sudan III en heces varía dependiendo de la edad. En RN pre-término un promedio de 5.4 gotas (12-0 gotas)de grasa por campo, en RN a término 7.9 gotas (16-0), en lactantes menores de 4 meses de edad 4.3 gotas (10-0) y en los lactantes de 5-12 meses 3.8 gotas (6-0) de grasa por campo. La prueba Sudan III orienta en el diagnostico de esteatorrea en niños, en pacientes con mala absorción intestinal y en la evaluación del uso de enzimas pancreáticas. Es una técnica sencilla, económica y fácil de realizar. El conocer los valores normales dependiendo de la edad pediátrica permite al médico tratante plantear la existencia de esteatorrea patológica.Palabras claves: esteatorrea, prueba Sudan III en heces
Steatorrhea is the loss of fat through the stools. It becomes clinically apparent with the presence of increased amounts of foul and fatty stools. It can be determined through the Van de Kamer method, the acid steatocrit and the Sudan III stain test of stools. The objective of this paper is to specify the normal value of the Sudan III Stain Test of stools. 2000 healthy children stools samples were included. Age groups were preterms, newborns, and infants between 1-4 and 5-12 months of age, 500 samples were collected for every group. The study was performed at the Hospital Universitario de los Andes, in Mérida-Venezuela, during years 1999 through 2009. The Sudan III Stain Test and the Saathoff reactive were employed, as well as a highpower objective lens. The number of large and medium fat drops by field was considered for the classification. This is a prospective, observational, randomized clinical trial. For the total number of children (53% males and 47% females) the average of evacuations per day showed a total of 3 times inthe newborns, from 2 to 3 times in the infants between 1-4 months of age and from 1 to 2 times in the infants between 5 and 12 months of age. The normal value of the Sudan III Stain Test of stools varies according to age: in preterm newborns this test shows an average of 5,4 drops (12-0) of fat per field, in full term newborns 7,9 drops (16-0), in infants from 0 to 4 months 4,3 drops (10-0) and in infants between 5 and 12 months 3,8 drops (6-0) of fat per field. Sudan III Stain Test guides in the diagnosis of steatorrhea in children, in patients with intestinal malabsorption syndrome and in the evaluation of the indication of pancreatic enzymes. This is a cheap, simple and easy technique .To know the normal values in the different pediatric age groups, allows to establish the presence of steatorrhea

Descreve-se um surto de intoxicação espontânea por Sorghum sudanense (aveia de verão, capim-sudão) em um rebanho de bovinos leiteiros no município de Triunfo, Rio Grande do Sul. Essa planta é utilizada como forrageira em diversas regiões do estado; entretanto, intoxicações ocasionais são associadas com a formação de ácido cianídrico por hidrólise dos glicosídeos cianogênicos presentes na planta. Vinte e nove vacas Holandesas foram colocadas, no final do dia, em um potreiro de 800m², onde uma pastagem estabelecida de capim-sudão rebrotava e atingia 30cm de altura. Na manhã seguinte, quase todo pasto havia sido consumido e três vacas foram encontradas mortas. Não foram relatados sinais clínicos, mesmo porque os animais não foram observados durante a noite. Exceto pela presença de folhas mastigadas de capim-sudão nas proximidades da entrada do rúmen, não foram observadas alterações macro ou microssópicas. Amostras da planta de diferentes locais no potreiro foram positivas no teste do papel picrossódico. Esses achados sugerem que as três vacas foram afetadas por intoxicação cianídrica secundária ao consumo de Sorghum sudanense.(AU)
An outbreak of Sorghum sudanense (Sudan grass) poisoning affected three cows from a dairy herd in Triunfo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Although S. sudanense has been used as a source of forage for cattle, sporadic poisoning occurs in association with management failures of these pastures. Cyanogenic glycosides present in the plant may form hydrogen cyanide through hydrolysis and may cause livestock poisoning. Twenty-nine Holstein cattle were allowed to graze in an 800m² paddock, in which lush sprouts of sudanense were 30cm high. Animals were placed on pasture at evening and, in the next morning, most forage had been consumed and three cattle were found dead. No clinical disease was noticed. Except by the presence of chewed sudan grass leaves near to the entrance of the rumen, there were neither macroscopic nor microscopic changes, Samples of S. sudanense taken from different places in the paddock were positive when evaluated by the picrosodic paper test. Such findings suggested that those three cows were affected by cyanide poisoning secondary to Sorghum sudanense consumption.(AU)
