ABSTRACT

This qualitative study has three objectives: (1) to develop a predictive AI model to categorize the online learning behavior of Thai students who study through a Thai Massive Open Online Course (MOOC); (2) to categorize students' online behavior in a Thai MOOC; and (3) to evaluate the prediction accuracy of the developed predictive AI models. Data were collected from 8000 learners enrolled in the KMUTT015 course on the Thai MOOC platform. The k-means clustering algorithm classified learners enrolled in the Thai MOOC platform based on their online learning behaviors. The decision tree algorithm was used to assess the accuracy of the AI model prediction capability. The study finds the predictive AI model successfully categorizes learners based on their learning behaviors and predicts their future online learning behaviors in the online learning environment. The k-means clustering algorithm yields three groups of learners in the Thai MOOC platform: High Active Participants (HAP), Medium Active Participants (MAP), and Lurking participants. The findings also indicate high predictive accuracy rates for each behavioral group (HAP cluster = 0.98475, Lurking participants cluster = 0.967625, and MAP cluster = 0.955375), indicating the proficiency of the AI predictive model in forecasting learner behavior. The results of this study will benefit the design of online courses that respond to the needs of students with different online learning characteristics and help them achieve a high level of academic performance.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence of sleep bruxism (SB) in Thai obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients and to identify demographic characteristics and specific sleep parameters associated with SB. METHODS: A total of 119 medical records, each containing full-night type I polysomnography from Thai patients with OSA, were included. SB was detected using surface electromyography of the masseter muscle. SB was diagnosed when the SB index reached at least two episodes per hour of sleep. The differences in demographic characteristics and sleep parameters between SB and non-SB groups were analysed. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the associated factors for SB. RESULTS: Among Thai patients diagnosed with OSA, 50.4% concurrently experienced SB, predominantly of the tonic type. The study revealed a higher prevalence of SB in males compared to females. The SB group demonstrated significantly higher values in the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Arousal Index (AI), and Respiratory Arousal Index (RAI) compared to the non-SB group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that a lower body mass index (BMI), higher ESS, and increased severity of AHI were significantly associated with SB. CONCLUSIONS: The study revealed that half of Thai patients diagnosed with OSA also exhibited SB. Male, AHI, ESS, AI, and RAI appeared to be potential correlates for the presence of SB. Lower BMI, higher ESS, and elevated AHI can be factors associated with SB in Thai OSA patients. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The prevalence of SB among Thai patients diagnosed with OSA and the factors associated with its occurrence were investigated.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: This article explores the significance of the Thai Buddhist temple for Thai women's sense of safety in Finland. Despite the growing popularity of Buddhism in the country, research literature and media have largely ignored the religiosity of Thai women, focusing instead on negative stereotypes. The article highlights the importance of Buddhism and the temple in the lives of Thai women who have migrated to European countries and challenges biased portrayals of Thai women in previous research. Methods: Based on ethnographic research at the Thai temples in Finland and life story interviews with twelve Thai women. Results: The article argues that the temple plays a crucial role in promoting a sense of safety among Thai women by providing a sense of home, belonging, and meaning. The temple's material and symbolic characteristics, in addition to its communality and relationality, work together to connect individuals with the temple's religious significance, contributing to the women's sense of security. Discussion: These findings speak for the fact that when facing the challenges of Thai women or other religious and ethical minorities, it is necessary to also look to their religion as a source of mental and spiritual well-being.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: CYP2C19 plays a major role in the metabolism of various drugs. The most common genetic variants were the CYP2C19*2 and *3 alleles (rs4244285 and rs4986893, non-functional variants). In previous studies, we found that genetic polymorphisms in CYP2C19 variants influenced the active metabolites of clopidogrel and caused major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular effects. However, the distribution of CYP2C19 varies among ethnic groups and according to adverse drug reactions. This study aimed to investigate the frequency of CYP2C19 genetic polymorphisms in the Thai population and analyze the differences in the frequency of CYP2C19 genetic polymorphisms between Thai and other populations. Methods: This study enrolled 211 unrelated healthy Thai individuals in total. We performed a real-time polymerase chain reaction to genotype CYP2C19*2 (681G > A) and CYP2C19*3 (636G > A). Results: In the Thai population, the CYP2C19*1 allele was the most prevalent at 70.14%, while the CYP2C19*2 and *3 alleles were found at frequencies of 25.36% and 4.50%, respectively. Conversely, the CYP2C19*3 allele was not detected in Caucasian, Hispanic, African, Italian, Macedonian, Tanzanian, or North Indian populations. The phenotypic profile of this gene revealed that the frequency of intermediate metabolizers (IMs) is nearly equal to that of extensive metabolizers (EMs), at 42.65% and 48.82% respectively, with genotypes *1/*2 (36.02%) and *1/*3 (6.63%). Likewise, poor metabolizers (PMs) with genotypes *2/*2 (6.16%), *2/*3 (2.37%), and *3/*3 (<1%) are more prevalent in our population as well. Conclusion: The distribution of CYP2C19 genotype and phenotype influenced by non-functional alleles has potential as a pharmacogenomics biomarker for precision medicine and is dependent on an ethnic-specific genetic variation database.

Background and purpose: N-acetyl-ρ-aminophen (APAP) is a widely used medication with analgesic and antipyretic characteristics. High paracetamol doses can damage the liver. Thai-pigmented rice may treat numerous liver disorders due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and glutathione-restoring capabilities. This study aimed to evaluate the phenolic components in three Thai rice bran extracts and their antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities in an animal model. Experimental approach: Fifty male mice were randomly assigned to the control and APAP studies. Each study was divided into 5 groups (n = 5) treated with distilled water, Hom Mali, Hang-Ngok, and Hom Nil (HN) rice compared with N-acetylcysteine with/without 60 mg/kg/day of APAP orally once a day for two weeks. Blood and liver sampling were collected for analysis. Findings/Results: HN rice bran exhibited higher contents of total phenolic, total flavonoid, total anthocyanin, ferric-reducing antioxidant, and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activities than Hom Mali and Hang-Ngok. Anthocyanin was merely detected in HN. Following APAP administration, mice exhibited significant increases in hepatic enzymes including alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6)), and malondialdehyde (MDA), but lower levels of antioxidant enzymes and glutathione profiles. Amongst the three cultivars, HN rice was the only compound that decreased MDA, ALT, AST, TNF-α, and IL-6 while increasing antioxidant enzyme activity such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase that was very close to that of N-acetylcysteine groups. Conclusion and implications: Given the hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties, HN has the potential to be used as a health supplement.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The high virulence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has triggered global health and economic concerns. The absence of specific antiviral treatments and the side effects of repurposed drugs present persistent challenges. This study explored a promising antiviral herbal extract against SARS-CoV-2 from selected Thai medicinal plants based on in vitro efficacy and evaluated its antiviral lead compounds by molecular docking. METHODS: Twenty-two different ethanolic-aqueous crude extracts (CEs) were rapidly screened for their potential activity against porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) as a surrogate using a plaque reduction assay. Extracts achieving ≥ 70% anti-PEDV efficacy proceeded to the anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity test using a 50% tissue culture infectious dose method in Vero E6 cells. Molnupiravir and extract-free media served as positive and negative controls, respectively. Potent CEs underwent water/ethyl acetate fractionation to enhance antiviral efficacy, and the fractions were tested for anti-SARS-CoV-2 performance. The fraction with the highest antiviral potency was identified using liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS). Molecular docking analyses of these compounds against the main protease (Mpro) of SARS-CoV-2 (6LU7) were performed to identify antiviral lead molecules. The top three hits were further evaluated for their conformational stability in the docked complex using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. RESULTS: The water fraction of mulberry (Morus alba Linn.) leaf CE (WF-MLCE) exhibited the most potent anti-SARS-CoV-2 efficacy with low cytotoxicity profile (CC50 of ~ 0.7 mg/mL), achieving 99.92% in pre-entry mode and 99.88% in postinfection treatment mode at 0.25 mg/mL. Flavonoids and conjugates were the predominant compounds identified in WF-MLCE. Molecular docking scores of several flavonoids against SARS-CoV-2 Mpro demonstrated their superior antiviral potency compared to molnupiravir. Remarkably, myricetin-3-O-ß-D-galactopyranoside, maragrol B, and quercetin 3-O-robinobioside exhibited binding energies of ~ - 9 kcal/mol. The stability of each ligand-protein complex of these compounds with the Mpro system showed stability during MD simulation. These three molecules were pronounced as antiviral leads of WF-MLCE. Given the low cytotoxicity and high antiviral potency of WF-MLCE, it holds promise as a candidate for future therapeutic development for COVID-19 treatment, especially considering its economic and pharmacological advantages.

ABSTRACT

Background: This research aims to explore the phenolics identification, phenolics quantification, antioxidant and potential biofunctional properties of lesser-known Thai fruits and their potency to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Including, Antidesma puncticulatum, Dillenia indica, Diospyros decandra, Elaeagnus latifolia, Flacourtia indica, Garcinia dulcis, Lepisanthes fruticose, Mimusops elengi, Muntingia calabura, Phyllanthus reticulatus, Streblus asper, Syzygium cumini, Syzygium malaccense, Willughbeia edulis and Schleichera oleosa were analyzed by their phenolic and flavonoid content. These fruits have received limited scientific attention, prompting an investigation into their health benefits, particularly their relevance to diabetes management. Methods: The study utilized methanolic crude extracts to measure phenolic and flavonoid levels. Additionally, UHPLC-DAD was utilized to identify and quantify phenolics. The methanolic extracts were assessed for antioxidant and antidiabetic abilities, including α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibition. Results and Conclusion: The study highlighted S. cumini as a rich source of phenolic (980.42 ± 0.89 mg GAE/g and flavonoid (3.55 ± 0.02 mg QE/g) compounds with strong antioxidant activity (IC50 by DPPH; 3.00 ± 0.01 µg/ml, IC50 by ABTS; 40 ± 0.01 µg/ml, FRAP; 898.63 ± 0.02 mg TE/ml). Additionally, S. cumini exhibited promising antidiabetic effects (S. cumini IC50; 0.13 ± 0.01 mg/ml for α-glucosidase inhibition, 3.91 ± 0.05 mg/ml for α-amylase inhibition), compared to Acarbose (IC50; 0.86 ± 0.01 mg/ml for α-glucosidase inhibition, 0.39 ± 0.05 mg/ml for α-amylase inhibition). Remarkably, compounds like catechins, gallic acid, kaempferol, and ellagic acid were identified in various quantities.This study suggests that these fruits, packed with phenolics, hold the potential to be included in an anti-diabetic diet and even pharmaceutical applications due to their health-promoting properties.

Colored rice is abundant in polyphenols, and koji molds have potential for biotransformation. This study aimed to produce Thai-colored rice koji to study its polyphenolic biotransformation. Four industrial koji mold strains: Aspergillus oryzae 6001, A. oryzae 6020, A. sojae 7009, and A. luchuensis 8035, were cultivated on unpolished Thai-colored rice (Riceberry and Sangyod), unpolished Thai white rice (RD43), and polished Japanese white rice (Koshihikari). We discovered that koji molds grew on all the rice varieties. Methanol extracts of all rice kojis exhibited an approximately 2-fold or greater increase in total phenolic content and DPPH antioxidant activity compared to those of steamed rice. Moreover, quercetin, quercetin-3-O-glucoside, isorhamnetin-3-O-glucoside, ferulic acid, caffeic acid, protocatechuic acid, vanillic acid, (+)-catechin, and (-)-epicatechin content increased in Riceberry and Sangyod koji samples. Consequently, Aspergillus solid-state cultivation on unpolished Thai-colored rice exhibited higher functionalization than the cultivation of unpolished Thai white rice and polished Japanese white rice.

Background: Gluteal contouring is one of the major concerns of transwomen worldwide. Hip and gluteal surgery, as one type of gender-affirmation surgery (GAS), is now increasing in popularity to alleviate gender incongruence. This study investigated the ideal buttock shape in the Thai-transwomen population, which can further aid in the guidance for hip and gluteal surgery. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was done on transwomen attending services at Tangerine Community Health Center, the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Clinic in Chulalongkorn Hospital, and Gender Health Community from 2022 to 2023. Participants were inquired about their ideal gluteal contouring using survey images of gluteal contouring of varying proportions and gluteal shapes on posterior and lateral views. Results: Among 373 participants, the most preferred waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) in the posterior view and lateral view were 0.65 and 0.70, respectively. Regarding gluteal convexity, many participants preferred round shape buttocks the most (47.45%), followed by the A-shape (43.97%), square shape (7.77%) and, V-shape (0.80%). In the gluteal projection aspect, the most attractive type was the middle buttock type which data were congruence among each subgroup population. Conclusions: The image of a narrowing waist proportionated with a widening hip on the posterior view, with the WHR of 0.65, could be considered an ideal perception of beauty in transwomen. It could help the patient in decision-making and guiding the surgical planning.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: In Thailand, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) individuals face significant health disparities and discrimination in healthcare. A primary cause is the lack of knowledge among doctors and their negative attitudes towards LGBTQ people. The purpose of this study was to explore the current undergraduate medical curricula of medical schools in Thailand concerning learning outcomes, contents, teaching and learning methods, and assessment methods in the field of LGBTQ health. It also sought to gather opinions from principal stakeholders in curriculum development. METHODS: The authors employed a mixed-methods approach with a convergent design to conduct the research. Quantitative data were collected from 23 deputy deans of educational affairs using a standardized interview form, and qualitative data were obtained through in-depth interviews with key stakeholders including 16 LGBTQ healthcare receivers, 22 medical students, and three medical teachers. Both datasets were analyzed simultaneously to ensure consistency. RESULTS: The findings indicate that none of the medical schools had established learning objectives related to LGBTQ healthcare within their curricula. Of the institutions surveyed, 8 out of 15 (53.3%) offered some form of teaching on this topic, aligning with the qualitative data which showed 7 out of 17 institutions (41.2%) provided such education. The most frequently covered topics were gender identity and sexual orientation. Lectures were the predominant teaching method, while multiple-choice questions were the most common assessment format. There was a unanimous agreement among all principal stakeholders on the necessity of integrating LGBTQ healthcare into the M.D. program and the professional standards governed by the Thai Medical Council. CONCLUSIONS: Although some Thai medical schools have begun to incorporate LGBTQ health into their curricula, the approach does not fully address the actual health issues faced by LGBTQ individuals. Future teaching should emphasize fostering positive attitudes towards LGBTQ people and enhancing communication skills, rather than focusing solely on the cognitive aspects of terminology. Importantly, medical educators should serve as role models in providing competent and compassionate care for LGBTQ patients.

Purpose: To investigate the long-term visual outcome and their determinants after an operation in Thai pituitary adenoma (PA). Patients and Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on PA patients who underwent surgery at Rajavithi Hospital. Baseline characteristics and visual parameters, including visual acuity (VA) and visual field (VF), were analyzed in relation to the visual prognosis outcome. The outcome was defined as VA improvement at 1-year postoperatively. Visual parameters were measured at each follow-up visit and compared. Factors for improved visual prognosis were evaluated using logistic regression analysis. Results: A total cohort of 87 patients (64.37% female), 62.07% showed improvement in visual outcome. Most improvement occurred immediately after surgery, evident at the 1-month visit. The mean follow-up time was 47.45 months (±28.49 SD), mean difference in VA improvement at 1-year was -0.56 logMAR (95% CI -0.73, -0.47). In multivariable logistic regression model, prolonged onset duration was associated with a reduced odds of improved visual outcome, with an odds ratio (OR) of 0.946 (95% CI 0.899-0.996, p = 0.034). Baseline characteristics, tumor volume, Hardy and Knops classification, and surgical approaches were not identified as significant predictors. Conclusion: Both TSS and transcranial approaches are effective for pituitary adenoma. A prompt operation is recommended for patients with prolonged onset duration, with thorough discussion on poor postoperative visual outcomes.

PURPOSE: The study is to evaluate reliability and validity of the short Thai version of Functional Outcome of Sleep Questionnaire (FOSQ-10T), in patients with sleep disordered breathing (SDB). METHODS: Inclusion criteria were Thai patients with SDB age ≥ 18 years old who had polysomnography results available. Exclusion criteria were patients unable to complete questionnaire for any reason, patients with a history of continuous antidepressant or alcohol use, and underlying disorders including unstable cardiovascular, pulmonary, or neurological conditions. All participants were asked to complete the FOSQ-10 T and Epworth sleepiness scales (ESS). Of these, 38 patients were required to retake FOSQ-10 T at 2-4 weeks later to assess test-retest reliability, and 19 OSA patients treated with CPAP were asked to do so at 4 weeks following therapy to assess questionnaire's responsiveness to treatment. RESULTS: There were 42 participants (24 men, 18 women), with a mean age of 48.3 years. The internal consistency of the FOSQ-10T was good, as indicated by Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.85. The test-retest reliability was good, as indicated by intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.77. The correlation between the FOSQ-10T and ESS scores (concurrent validity) was moderate (r = - 0.41). The scores of FOSQ-10T significantly increased after receiving adequate CPAP therapy, showing an excellent responsiveness to treatment. However, there was no significant association between FOSQ-10T scores and OSA severity measured by apnea-hypopnea index. CONCLUSIONS: The FOSQ-10T has good reliability and validity to use as a tool to assess QOL in Thai patients with SDB. It is convenient and potentially useful in both clinical and research settings.

Analyzing skeletal remains is crucial for identifying individuals, and forensic anthropologists use this analysis to determine biological characteristics, particularly sex, aiding criminal investigations. Among thoracic vertebrae, the twelfth thoracic vertebra (T12) is highly sexually dimorphic in various populations. This study aims to establish a discriminant function equation (DFE) for sex determination based on T12 in the Central Thai population. A total of 15 parameters of T12 were examined in 69 bone samples (43 males and 26 females). Among the 15 parameters, 14 were significantly different between males and females. The discriminant function equation (DFE) was generated as DFE = -19.578 + 0.376(i) BDsm + 0.254(l) PW + 0.081TDm, with a cutoff value of -0.296 for males and females, showing 92.8 % accuracy. The evaluation of the DFE using 10 blind samples showed 90 % accuracy. These findings may offer an additional method for sex determination through T12, complementing the examination of other skeletal elements.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of traditional Thai massage (TTM) on improving fatigue recovery and fatigue-related parameters of the gastrocnemius muscle after a heel-raise exercise. DESIGN: A single-blind randomised controlled trial. SETTING: Mae Fah Luang University Hospital, Thailand. PARTICIPANTS: Fifty-four healthy participants were randomly assigned to two groups: TTM (n = 27; 51.85 % women; mean age 23.15 ± 4.90 years; number of exercises/week: 4.78 ± 1.58) and control (n = 27; 59.26 % women; mean age 22.63 ± 4.88 years; number of exercises/week: 4.48 ± 1.25). INTERVENTIONS: After the participants performed a heel-raise exercise to induce fatigue of the gastrocnemius muscle, they received either 30 min of TTM to the gastrocnemius muscle or 30 min of control (29 min of rest and 1 min total gastrocnemius stretching). OUTCOME MEASURES: The outcome measures were the median frequency (MDF) of the electromyography signal, muscle power (MP) and feelings of muscle fatigue (FMF). All the outcome measures were evaluated before (T1) and after (T2) the fatigue-inducement protocol as well as immediately (T3), 1 h (T4) and 2 h (T5) after the interventions. RESULTS: The results show that MDF and MP were significantly increased and FMF significantly decreased in both groups immediately after the interventions and at 1 h and 2 h after the interventions (repeated measures ANOVA: p < .05). In the between-group comparisons, participants in the TTM group showed significantly greater improvement than those in the control group on all outcomes at all post-intervention assessment time points (T3, T4, T5), reflecting faster recovery from muscle fatigue (ANCOVA: p < .05). CONCLUSION: TTM proved an effective intervention for maximising recovery from fatigue of the gastrocnemius muscle.

ABSTRACT

Background: Dietary assessment is a fundamental component of nutrition research and plays a pivotal role in managing chronic diseases. Traditional dietary assessment methods, particularly in the context of Thai cuisine, often require extensive training and may lead to estimation errors. Objectives: To address these challenges, Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University (INMU) iFood, an innovative artificial intelligence-based Thai food dietary assessment system, allows for estimating the nutritive values of dishes from food images. Methods: INMU iFood leverages state-of-the-art technology and integrates a validated automated Thai food analysis system. Users can use 3 distinct input methods: food image recognition, manual input, and a convenient barcode scanner. This versatility simplifies the tracking of dietary intake while maximizing data quality at the individual level. The core improvement in INMU iFood can be attributed to 2 key factors, namely, the replacement of Yolov4-tiny with Yolov7 and the expansion of noncarbohydrate source foods in the training image data set. Results: This combination significantly enhances the system's ability to identify food items, especially in scenarios with closely packed food images, thus improving accuracy. Validation results showcase the superior performance of the INMU iFood integrated V7-based system over its predecessor, V4-based, with notable improvements in protein and fat estimation. Furthermore, INMU iFood addresses limitations by offering users the option to import additional food products via a barcode scanner, thus providing access to a vast database of nutritional information through Open Food Facts. This integration ensures users can track their dietary intake effectively, with expanded access to over 3000 food items added to or updated in the Open Food Facts database covering a wide variety of dietary choices. Conclusions: INMU iFood is a promising tool for researchers, health care professionals, and individuals seeking to monitor their dietary intake within the context of Thai cuisine and for ultimately promoting better health outcomes and facilitating nutrition-related research.

ABSTRACT

The objectives of this online study were to determine the status of regular dental check-ups among Thai nationals living in Japan and to identify barriers to regular dental check-ups by comparing them with general health check-ups. We conducted the online survey twice, in 2021 and 2022, among Thai nationals aged 18 years and older living in Japan via social networking services by an organization that supports Thai nationals living in Japan. Respondents between the ages of 30 and 59 were included in this study. Independent factors included gender, age, length of stay in Japan, family economic status, confidence in Japanese and stay for work purposes. Dependent factors were regular dental check-ups and general health check-ups in the past year. Chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression analyses were used for analysis. 56.6% of respondents had regular dental check-ups. The adjusted odds ratio for the proportion of people with regular dental check-ups was significantly higher for those with high economic status, 2.15 (1.06-4.33), compared with those with low economic status. It was also significantly higher 1.88 (1.10-3.21) for those with confidence in the Japanese language compared with those without. The study suggested the need for Japanese language support in addition to financial support for dental health prevention programs for foreigners living in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Infectious disease is an important health problem in border areas as there is a possibility that the migrants may carry the disease into the area. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the knowledge and behaviors toward human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer in the women of reproductive age in the Thailand-Myanmar border area. METHODS: A survey study in a population of 418 women of reproductive age in Mae Hong Son Province in the Thailand-Myanmar border area. Knowledge and risk behaviors of HPV and cervical cancer were described using descriptive statistics. RESULTS: Fifty percent of the participants had sexual debut at age less than 20 years, 27% had more than one lifetime sexual partner and only 3% had sex outside a monogamous relationship during the past 12 months. In term of knowledge, 62.5% knew about HPV. The proportion of correct answers about HPV and cervical cancer questions ranged from 14-95% and 52-94%, respectively. Among the cervical cancer screening target, 69.4% accessed the screening. The factors associated with better knowledge about HPV and cervical cancer were education level higher than high school and sexual debut. CONCLUSION: The women of reproductive age in the Thailand-Myanmar border areas showed relatively low sexually risk behaviors for HPV infection. More than one-third of the participants did not know about HPV. The percentage of correct answer to questions about cervical cancer were low.  We encourage the Thai Ministry of Public Health to increase health promotion and health literacy on prevention of HPV and cervical cancer in the women of pre- and reproductive age in the Thailand-Myanmar border area.

ABSTRACT

Gastric cancer is a global health concern, but current treatment with chemotherapy and surgery is often inadequate, prompting the exploration of alternative treatments. Propolis is a natural substance collected by bees known for its diverse properties linked to floral sources. The Dichloromethane Partitioned Extract (DPE) from Tetragonula laeviceps propolis, in Bankha district, Thailand was previously shown to possess significant cytotoxicity against KATO-III gastric cancer cells, while showing lower cytotoxicity toward WI-38 normal fibroblast cells. Here, the DPE was further fractionated by column chromatography, identified active fractions, and subjected to structural analysis using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Cytotoxicity against KATO-III cells was reevaluated, and programmed cell death was analyzed using flow cytometry. Expression levels of cancer-related genes were measured using quantitative real-time reverse transcriptase PCR. Cardol C15:2 (compound 1) and mangiferolic acid (MF; compound 2) were discovered in the most active fractions following structural analysis. MF exhibited strong cytotoxicity against KATO-III cells (IC50 of 4.78-16.02 µg/mL), although this was less effective than doxorubicin (IC50 of 0.56-1.55 µg/mL). Morphological changes, including decreased cell density and increased debris, were observed in KATO-III cells treated with 30 µg/mL of MF. Significant induction of late-stage apoptosis and necrosis, particularly at 48 and 72 h, suggested potential DNA damage and cell cycle arrest, evidenced by an increased proportion of sub-G1 and S-phase cells. Doxorubicin, the positive control, triggered late apoptosis but caused more necrosis after 72 h. Furthermore, MF at 30 µg/mL significantly increased the expression level of COX2 and NFκB genes linked to inflammation and cell death pathways. This upregulation was consistent at later time points (48 and 72 h) and was accompanied by increased expression of CASP3 and CASP7 genes. These findings suggest MF effectively induces cell death in KATO-III cells through late apoptosis and necrosis, potentially mediated by upregulated inflammation-related genes.

ABSTRACT

This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the perspective and caregiving practices of Thai adolescents towards the elderly in the Northeastern region of Thailand. The study was carried out during July 1st to September 30th, 2023 among 1,551 participants in grades 4-6 from eight randomly selected schools. The analyzing using descriptive statistics. The results found that the average age was 15.30±1.66 years old, 62.4% were female, and most lived with their parents and relatives. About 36.4% of parents have experienced either widowhood or separation, 69.4% of families had a monthly income less than 15,000 THB. While 33.7% had an elderly person in the family, 1.6% lived with bedridden patients, and 40.3% required assistance in daily activities such as cooking, mobility, while 58.7% had diabetes and high blood pressure. 59.3% did not have a primary caregiver in the family, only parents or relatives usually taking on this role. Adolescent grandchildren spent the majority of their time on education. Almost one of three rarely took care of the elderly, even though their parents and teachers taught about moral responsibility. Regarding the belief in the merit that would arise from taking care of the elderly, one of five was indifferent or did not believe, while half of them believed to some extent. From self-assessment of their ability to take care of the elderly, most were in the moderate and low levels, despite receiving information from family, teachers, or various media. The predominant perspective is that caregiving is perceived as the responsibility of parents or health professionals, and the belief that the elderly is captious and irksome. Therefore, it is advisable to present policy-oriented information across education, health, and societal dimensions to support children and young people to learn about elderly individuals and instilling their responsibility within families and societies, fostering a sustainable and well-being-oriented community.

Background: The Thai Qualifications Framework for Higher Education (TQF: HEd) serves as a framework to enhance the quality of higher education in Thailand. However, no valid and reliable TQF: HEd instrument is available to measure the quality of graduates among Royal Thai Air Force Nurses. Objective: This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the TQF: HEd instrument among graduate nurses of the Royal Thai Air Force. Methods: Psychometric testing of the instrument was conducted. The instrument's validity was evaluated through a review by a panel of five experts, providing a content validity index (CVI). Construct validity was assessed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) with a sample size of 308, and Cronbach's α coefficient was utilized to measure the scale's internal consistency. Results: The Scale-Content Validity Index (S-CVI) was 0.88. CFA yielded the following fit indices: χ2 = 265.861, p = 0.068, df = 233, χ2/df ratio = 1.141, Comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.996, Tucker Lewis Index (TLI) = 0.993, Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA) = 0.021, and Standardized Root Mean Square Residual (SRMR) = 0.033. The scale reliability was acceptable, with a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.93 and 0.85-0.92 for the six factors. Conclusion: The TQF: HEd instrument demonstrates satisfactory psychometric properties, which will be valuable for those in charge of the curriculum in utilizing the instrument to measure graduate competency and guide curriculum development.
