ABSTRACT

Myoglobin is the main factor responsible for muscle pigmentation in tuna; muscle color depends upon changes in the oxidative state of myoglobin. The tuna industry has reported muscle greening after thermal treatment involving metmyoglobin (MetMb), trimethylamine oxide (TMAO), and free cysteine (Cys). It has been proposed that this pigmentation change is due to a disulfide bond between a unique cysteine residue (Cys10) found in tuna MetMb and free Cys. However, no evidence has been given to confirm that this reaction occurs. In this review, new findings about the mechanism of this greening reaction are discussed, showing evidence of how free radicals produced from Cys oxidation under thermal treatment participate in the greening of tuna and horse muscle during thermal treatment. In addition, the reaction conditions are compared to other green myoglobins, such as sulfmyoglobin, verdomyoglobin, and cholemyoglobin.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: composite resin is one of the most researched restorative materials in dentistry, aiming to improve its properties and improve the technique. This work aims to evaluate the superficial rugosity of two composite resins, microhybrid and nanoparticulate, after additional polymerization with microwaves. Materials and methods: for each composite resin, 24 specimens were made, measuring 0.8cm internal diameter by 0.2cm thick, of which 12 received additional microwave polymerization and 12 visible-blue-light polymerization only. Four groups were established: G1 - microhybrid resin subjected to conventional polymerization; G2 - nanoparticulate resin subjected to conventional polymerization; G3 - microhybrid resin exposed to additional polymerization in a home microwave oven; and G4 - nanoparticulate exposed to additional polymerization in a home microwave oven. The specimens were sanded in a polishing machine in order to standardize the surfaces, followed by reading on the Mitutoyo SJ 301 digital roughness meter. The Mann-Whitney Exact nonparametric test (5% significance) was performed using the arithmetic mean (Ra, µm). Conclusion: there was no statistical significance between the polymerization types and neither among the different composite resins studied.(AU)

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the chance to couple the conventional Oxic Settling Anaerobic (OSA) process with a thermic treatment at moderate temperature (35 °C). The maximum excess sludge reduction rate (80%) was achieved when the plant was operated under 3 h of hydraulic retention time (HRT). Compared with the conventional OSA system, the thermic treatment enabled a further improvement in excess sludge minimization of 35%. The observed yield coefficient decreased from 0.25 gTSS gCOD-1 to 0.10 gTSS gCOD-1 when the temperature in the anaerobic reactor was increased to 35 °C, despite the lower HRT (3 h vs 6 h). Moreover, the thermic treatment enabled the decrease of filamentous bacteria, thereby improving the sludge settling properties. The thermic treatment enhanced the destruction of extracellular polymeric substances and the increase of endogenous decay rate (from 0.64 d-1 to 1.16 d-1) that reduced the biomass active fraction (from 22% to 4%).

ABSTRACT

The residue generated in the aluminium cold lamination (TTR) was submitted to a direct burning and then it was calcined at 500°C. BET, FTIR, SEM with EDX and TGA techniques were performed to characterize the adsorbent before and after the adsorption. BET analysis showed that TTR specific surface area was 55.37 m2 g-1 and there were no significant changes after the adsorptive process. Afterwards, the TTR was applied as adsorbent of the reactive Drimaren Blue (DB), Drimaren Red (DR) and Drimaren Gold (DG). Its employment consists in a sustainable alternative for the treatment of textile wastewater, once the TTR was used as low-cost adsorbent of textile dyes. Kinetic studies showed that the process reached the equilibrium state between 5 and 10 min. The pseudo-second-order model better fitted the adsorption kinetics, with kinetic rate constants 10.51, 34.71 and 31.51 mg min g-1 for DB, DR and DG respectively. The equilibrium experiments were performed to obtain the adsorption parameters for each dye; moreover, the maximum adsorption capacity was 6.27, 0.42 and 1.23 mg g-1 for DB, DR and DG, respectively. Thermodynamics studies allowed to obtain the values of enthalpy for DB, DR and DG, -7.90, 14.03 and -17.75 kJ mol-1, respectively. Furthermore, the negative values of Gibbs free energy confirmed the spontaneity of the adsorption. The results point to the physisorption characteristic of the process, in which the temperature negatively influenced the adsorption for the DB and DG; the opposite result was observed for the DR.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective Evaluate the influence of silane heat treatment in bond durability between two resin cements and CAD/CAM feldspathic ceramic. Methods 40 feldspathic ceramic blocks were obtained, and were duplicated in microhybrid composite. All ceramic blocks were etched with 10% hydrofluoric acid for 20 s and received application of silane agent. The blocks were randomizedinto eight groups (n=5) according to the surface treatments and luting agents: P- Panavia F; PAg- Panavia F + Aging; HP- Heat Treatment + Panavia F; HPAg- Heat Treatment + Panavia F + Aging; R- RelyX ARC; Rag- RelyX ARC + Aging; HR- Heat Treatment + RelyX ARC; HRAg- Heat Treatment + RelyX ARC + Aging. The heat treatment was performed in furnace at 100 °C for 2 min. All blocks were cemented and cut to obtain samples with adhesive area of 1 mm2. Aging was performed with 10000 thermal cycles. The samples were subjected to microtensile bond strength test. Results The three-way ANOVA test revealed a significant interaction between cement versus heat treatment (p=0.001) and heat treatment versus thermal cycling (p=0.001) indicating that there was a change in bond strength due to surface treatment and aging. Conclusion Therefore, the heat treatment of the silane at 100 ºC for 2 minutes obtained higher values of bond strength between the resin cement and a feldspathic ceramicafter aging.

ABSTRACT

Pea grains may partially replace soybean or rapeseed meals and cereals in ruminant diets, but substitution by unprocessed peas is limited by high ruminal protein solubility. The effect of combined ensiling and toasting of peas using a mobile toaster (100 kg/h throughput rate, 180 to 190 °C supplied air temperature) on rumen-undegraded protein (RUP) was tested in vitro using the Streptomyces griseus protease test. The effects of ensiling plus toasting on apparent digestibility of organic matter (OM), gross energy (GE), and proximate nutrients were examined in a digestion trial. Concentrations of metabolizable energy (ME) and net energy lactation (NEL) were calculated. Native peas had 38 g RUP/kg dry matter (DM), which was 20% of crude protein (CP). Rumen-undegraded protein increased three-fold after ensiling plus toasting (p < 0.001). Acid detergent insoluble protein increased five-fold. Apparent digestibility was 0.94 (OM), 0.90 (CP), and above 0.99 (nitrogen-free extract, starch, and sugars) and was not altered by the treatment. The ME (13.9 MJ/kg DM) or the NEL (8.9 MJ/kg DM) concentration was similar in native and ensiled plus toasted peas. This technique can easily be applied on farms and may increase RUP. However, it needs to be clarified under which conditions pea protein will be damaged.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: The heat treatment of stainless steel wires is a routine clinical procedure adopted by many dentists in order to relieve the stress caused after performing bends in the archwire. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of heat treatment of stainless steel archwires with a rectangular section of 0.016 x 0.022'-in. Methods: For analysis of the dimensional stability, the anterior and posterior dimensions of forty 0.016 x 0.022-in stainless steel orthodontic archwires without heat treatment and 30 days after heat treatment were evaluated. For analysis of the mechanical properties, 12 stainless steel wire segments with the same rectangular section without heat treatment and 30 days after heat treatment were tested through tensile strength and strain tests. To evaluate if there were differences between the anterior and posterior dimensions, the results were analyzed by the Student's t-test. To compare the tensile strength and strain between the groups, the ANOVA test was used. The level of significance adopted was 95% (p< 0.05). Results: The heat treatment did not stop the expansion of archwires 30 days after their preparation, and there was no statistical difference in the tensile strength and strain tests with and without heat treatment. Conclusion: From the findings of this study, it can be conclude that the mechanical behavior of heat-treated stainless steel archwires is similar to that of archwires not subjected to heat treatment.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Direct composite resins are often used by professionals for making extensive indirect restorations. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate flexural strength and elastic modulus of different restorative polymeric materials at 30 minutes and 24 hours without heat treatment (HT); and with and without HT at 24 hours and 180 days post cure. Materials and method: 200 samples were prepared and divided according to the material as follows: microhybrid ormocer Admira Fusion (ADM), nanofilled bulk-fill composite resin Fitek Bulk Fill (BU), nanofilled universal composite resin Filtek Supreme Ultra (Z350) and microhybrid universal composite resin IPS Empress Direct (EMP). Groups were subdivided (n=10) at 30 minutes into: without HT (30 min), 24 h with and without HT and 180 days with and without HT. The samples (10 mm x 2 mm x 2 mm) were made in a tri-part stainless steel mold where the material was inserted and light-cured for 20 seconds on each side. At the end of the 24 h period HT at 170°C was performed for 10 minutes in a dry heat oven. The 180 day storage samples were placed in destilled water at 37°C in the dark. A standard three point bending test was conducted on all samples with a universal testing machine (Instron) at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min. Results: The results were recorded in MPa (flexural strength) and GPa (elastic modulus) and data were analyzed statistically at a significance level of 5%. All the materials had a significant increase in flexural strength and elastic modulus from 30 minutes to 24 hours (p<0.05). HT promoted an increase in flexural strength for BU and EMP at 24 hours and Z350 at 180 days (p<0,05). Storage didn't influence flexural strength for BU without HT. HT promoted elastic modulus increase for ormocer ADM at both testing times and for EMP, BU and Z350 at 24 hours (p<0.05). With regard to ADM and EMP the elastic modulus decreased significantly after 180 days in comparison to 24 h independent of HT. BU with HT also decreased in modulus after 180 days (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in elastic modulus between 24 hours and 180 days for BU without HT and for Z350 with HT (p>0.05). Conclusions: It can be concluded that the influence of time from 30 minutes to 24 hours in flexural strength and elastic modulus is independent of the material. Storage and HT influence on flexural strength and elastic modulus are material dependent(AU)

ABSTRACT

Legionella, an opportunistic human pathogen whose natural environment is water, is transmitted to humans through inhalation of contaminated aerosols. Legionella has been isolated from a high diversity of water types. Due its importance as a pathogen, two ISO protocols have been developed for its monitoring. However, these two protocols are not suitable for analyzing Legionella in greywater (GW). GW is domestic wastewater excluding the inputs from toilets and kitchen. It can serve as an alternative water source, mainly for toilet flushing and garden irrigation; both producing aerosols that can cause a risk for Legionella infection. Hence, before reuse, GW has to be treated and its quality needs to be monitored. The difficulty of Legionella isolation from GW strives in the very high load of contaminant bacteria. Here we describe a modification of the ISO protocol 11731:1998 that enables the isolation and quantification of Legionella from GW samples. The following modifications were made:•To enable isolation of Legionella from greywater, a pre-filtration step that removes coarse matter is recommended.•Legionella can be isolated after a combined acid-thermic treatment that eliminates the high load of contaminant bacteria in the sample.

ABSTRACT

Objective This study evaluated the fracture toughness (FT) of denture base and autopolymerizing reline resins, with and without thermocycling (T). Material and Methods Specimens of each material (denture base acrylic resin - Lucitone 550 – L; autopolymerizing reline resins - Ufi Gel Hard–UH, Tokuyama Rebase II-TR, New Truliner–NT and Kooliner-K), were produced, notched and divided into two groups (n=10): CG (control group of autopolymerizing reline resins and L): FT tests were performed after polymerization; TG (thermocycled group): FT tests were performed after T (5°C and 55°C for 5,000 cycles). Results: Results (MPa.m1/2) were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p=0.05). L exhibited the highest FT mean values in both groups (CG - 2.33; TG - 2.17). For the CG groups, NT showed the highest FT (1.64) among the autopolymerizing reline resins, and K the lowest (1.04). After T, when the autopolymerizing reline resins were compared, a statistically significant difference in FT was found only between the NT (1.46) and TR (1.00). Conclusions Thermocycling increased the FT of K and did not influence the FT of L, UH, TR and NT. .

ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze the influence of organic matrix, the inorganic content and thermic treatment (TT) on different properties of experimental composites, such as the degree of conversion (DC), fracture toughness (KIC), flexural strength (FS) and elastic modulus (EM). Methods: This experiment analyzed six formulations of experimental composites with 5:5 and 7:3 molar proportions of Bis-GMA: TEGDMA. The load used was barium glass at concentrations of 30, 50 and 70% by weight and the photoinitiators, camphorquinone and amine. GC was analyzed by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) (n=5). The KIC was evaluated by a "single-edge notched beam" (SENB). The images of the fracture surfaces were captured by a stereomicroscope and KIC calculated (n=10). The analysis FS and EM were performed by testing three points (n=10). For all the variation factors studied, half of the specimens immediately after the preparation received TT in conventional oven at 170º C for 10 minutes and the other half not. After 24 hours, the samples were designed according to the tests. Data were analyzed using ANOVA/Tukey the degree of conversion, fracture toughness and flexural strength, and Kruskal-Wallis test for the elastic modulus (=5%). Results: Analysis of GC (%) statistical significance was observed for the three variation factors analyzed individually (monomer, filler and TT), as well as for the interaction monomer x TT (p <0.001). For KIC and FS, significant changes were observed only in the three variation factors (monomer, filler and TT) analyzed individually (p<0.001). For EM, the individual factors (monomer, filler and TT) TT x filler interaction showed statistical significance (p <0.001), as well as the monomer x filler interaction (p = 0.001). Conclusions: The organic matrix and inorganic content of experimental composites influenced the GC, KIC, FS and EM, and the TT caused improvements in the properties studied.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Manufacturing process of metal-ceramic dental reconstructions systems includes heat treatment to promote adhesion of the porcelain in the metal. However, it is known that heat treatment can promote changes in the microstructure of metallic materials, thereby affecting their properties. Objective: This work evaluated themicrostructure stability of dental quality nickel base alloy submitted to the heat treatment aiming at achieving porcelain adhesion. Material and method: The samples divided into three sets, CR, F and TT, representing, respectively, the material received from the manufacturer, the material just before the casting process and the material after casting end heat treatment. The CR and F sample sets were submitted to quantitative chemical analysis. The samples of CR, F and TT sets was submitted to the microstructural characterization by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Digital images processing techniques were applied to micrographics of F and TT sets to determine the changes in the material microstructure before and after heat treatment. Result: The alloy microstructure exhibits a gray dendritic structure in a clear matrix, rich in nickel, and a white inter-dendritic second phase, rich in molybdenum, with scattered precipitates, rich in titanium or silicon, and porosity. Conclusion: The microstructure has an average size of the interdendritic phase less than the alloy after casting. Changes in the microestructure and in the chemical composition of each phase were not identified, whether before nor after thermal treatment.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the flexural strength of a direct composite, for indirect application, that received heat treatment, with or without investment. One indirect composite was used for comparison. For determination of the heat treatment temperature, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were performed, considering the initial weight loss temperature and glass transition temperature (Tg). Then, after photoactivation (600 mW/cm©÷ - 40 s), the specimens (10 x 2 x 2 mm) were heat-treated following these conditions: 170¨¬C for 5, 10 or 15 min, embedded or not embedded in investment. Flexural strength was assessed as a means to evaluate the influence of different heat treatment periods and investment embedding on mechanical properties. The data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test (¥á = 0.05). TGA showed an initial weight loss temperature of 180¨¬C and DSC showed a Tg value of 157¡ÆC. Heat treatment was conducted in an oven (Flli Manfredi, Italy), after 37¡ÆC storage for 48 h. Flexural strength was evaluated after 120 h at 37¡ÆC storage. The results showed that different periods and investment embedding presented similar statistical values. Nevertheless, the direct composite resin with treatments presented higher values (178.7 MPa) compared to the indirect composite resin (146.0 MPa) and the same direct composite submitted to photoactivation only (151.7 MPa). Within the limitations of this study, it could be concluded that the heat treatment increased the flexural strength of the direct composite studied, leading to higher mechanical strength compared to the indirect composite.

ABSTRACT

This research aimed at evaluating the cysts, oocysts and eggs contamination before and after thermal treatment of 60°C for 12 hours, in 25 different organic composts produced with biosolids from domestic waste-water treatment and animal and agricultural residues. The results showed high parasitological contamination for all organic composts before the treatment and these contaminations were not reduced after thermic treatment. The larva identification in coprocultures before and after thermic treatment showed Cooperia spp. and Trichostrongylus spp. were the most prevalent nematodes. These results demonstrated that helmintus’ eggs can remain viable even after the composing and thermic treatment. The obtained composition with sewage sludge and agricultural residues through these treatment processes can establish contamination risks for humans and animals.

ABSTRACT

Rates of seed transmission for Pepino mosaic virus (PepMV) were estimated in seedlings grown from seeds obtained from symptomatic tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) fruits of plants naturally infected with the virus. The proportion of seeds infected with PepMV was at least 25% as estimated from enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) analysis of grouped seeds. The seeds from symptomatic fruits were planted, and seedlings at the cotyledon and transplant stage were assayed for PepMV by ELISA. Three of 168 seedlings grown from infected seeds were PepMV-positive, corresponding to a seed-to-seedling transmission rate of 1.84%. Various tomato seed treatments were evaluated for their ability to prevent seed transmission of PepMV. This virus was largely eradicated by immersing the seeds in 10% trisodium phosphate for 3 h. Although heat treatments of 24 h at 80°C and 48 h at 74°C eliminated PepMV in seedlings, these treatments did not eradicate the virus in whole seeds. The three treatments did not adversely affect seed germination. The results suggest that trisodium phosphate can be used to eradicate PepMV in tomato seed without hindering germination.
