ABSTRACT

Introdução: O câncer de pulmão é uma doença grave, sendo a segunda maior causa de morte em todo o mundo, entretanto, em alguns países desenvolvidos, tornou-se já a primeira causa de morte. Cerca de 90% dos casos de neoplasia pulmonares são causados pela inalação da fumaça do cigarro. Objetivo: Correlacionar a prevalência de tabagismo e morbimortalidade por câncer de pulmão nos estados brasileiros, além de demonstrar a associação destes com sexo e faixa etária. Métodos: Estudo de caráter ecológico acerca da prevalência de tabagismo e morbimortalidade por câncer de pulmão nos estados brasileiros, nos períodos de 2013 e 2019, dividida por sexo e faixa etária. Foram utilizados bancos de coleta de dados como o Tabnet e Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde. Resultados: As maiores taxas de mortalidade e internações hospitalares foram do público masculino, em 2013, com taxa de 2,7 e 10, respectivamente, e em 2019 com 3,3 e 11,9, respectivamente. Ademais, a maior prevalência de tabagismo foi encontrada nos homens; entretanto seu índice tem caído, enquanto a quantidade de mulheres tabagistas tem aumentado. A Região Sul demonstrou maiores números de mortalidade em ambos os períodos estudados, com taxas de 4,9 e 5,8 por 100 mil habitantes, e morbidade hospitalar com 19,9 e 23,5 por 100 mil habitantes. Já a Região Norte se configurou com as menores prevalências: em 2013 apresentou taxa de óbito por câncer de pulmão de 1,0 e morbidade hospitalar de 3,5/100 mil habitantes, em 2019 apresentou taxa de mortalidade de 4,6 e internações de 1,6/100 mil habitantes. Os coeficientes de correlação de morbidade hospitalar e prevalência de tabagismo foram R2=0,0628, r=0,251 e p=0,042, enquanto os de mortalidade e prevalência de tabagismo foram R2=0,0337, r=0,183 e p=0,140. Conclusões: Na presente pesquisa, pode-se inferir que houve associação positiva na comparação entre taxa de morbidade hospitalar e prevalência de tabagismo; em contrapartida, não foi possível observar associação positiva na correlação da taxa de mortalidade por câncer de pulmão e prevalência de tabagismo.


Introduction: Lung cancer is a serious disease, being the second leading cause of death worldwide. Moreover, in some developed countries, it has already become the leading cause of death. About 90% of lung cancer cases are caused by cigarette smoking. Objective: To correlate the prevalence of smoking and lung cancer morbidity and mortality in Brazilian states, and to demonstrate their association with sex and age group as well. Methods: An ecological study on the prevalence of smoking and lung cancer morbidity and mortality in Brazilian states between 2013 and 2019, divided by sex and age group. The data collection databases Tabnet and National Health Survey were used. Results: The highest rates of mortality and hospital admissions were among men, in 2013 with a rate of 2.7 and 10, respectively, and in 2019 with 3.3 and 11.9, respectively. In addition, the highest prevalence of smoking was found in men, but this rate has fallen, while the number of women smokers has increased. The South region showed higher mortality rates in both periods studied, with rates of 4.9 and 5.8 per 100,000 inhabitants, and hospital morbidity with 19.9 and 23.5 per 100,000 inhabitants. The North region had the lowest prevalence, where in 2013, it had a death rate from lung cancer of 1.0 and hospital morbidity of 3.5/100 thousand inhabitants, and where in 2019, it had a mortality rate of 4.6 and hospitalizations of 1.6/100 thousand inhabitants. The correlation coefficients for hospital morbidity and smoking prevalence were R2=0.0628, r=0.251 and p=0.042, while for mortality and smoking prevalence, these were R2=0.0337, r=0.183 and p=0.140. Conclusions: In the present study, it can be inferred that there was a positive association between hospital morbidity rate and prevalence of smoking, while it was not possible to observe a correlation between lung cancer mortality rate and prevalence of smoking.


Introducción: El cáncer de pulmón es una enfermedad grave, siendo la segunda causa de muerte en todo el mundo, sin embargo, en algunos países desarrollados, ya se ha convertido en la primera causa de muerte. Alrededor del 90% de los casos de neoplasias pulmonares están causados por la inhalación del humo del cigarrillo. Objetivo: Correlacionar la prevalencia de tabaquismo y la morbimortalidad por cáncer de pulmón en los estados brasileños, además de demostrar la asociación de estos con el género y el grupo de edad. Métodos: estudio ecológico sobre la prevalencia de tabaquismo y morbimortalidad por cáncer de pulmón en los estados brasileños, dentro de los períodos 2013 y 2019, divididos por sexo y grupo de edad. Se utilizaron bancos de recogida de datos como Tabnet y la Encuesta Nacional de Salud. Resultados: las mayores tasas de mortalidad e ingresos hospitalarios se dieron en el público masculino, en 2013 con una tasa de 2,7 y 10, respectivamente, y en 2019 con 3,3 y 11,9, respectivamente. Además, la mayor prevalencia del tabaquismo se encontró en los hombres, sin embargo, su tasa ha disminuido, mientras que la cantidad de mujeres fumadoras ha aumentado. La región Sur presentó cifras más altas de mortalidad en ambos periodos estudiados, con tasas de 4,9 y 5,8 por 100.000 habitantes, y de morbilidad hospitalaria con 19,9 y 23,5 por 100.000 habitantes. Mientras que la región Norte se configuró con las prevalencias más bajas, en 2013 presentó una tasa de mortalidad por cáncer de pulmón de 1,0 y una morbilidad hospitalaria de 3,5/100.000 habitantes, en 2019 presentó una tasa de mortalidad de 4,6 y hospitalizaciones de 1,6/100.000 habitantes. ABSTRACT

Background: Third-degree atrioventricular (AV) blocks are rare but cause significant symptoms and require immediate intervention. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is felt to be the most common etiology. Although smoking is a prominent risk factor for CAD, there is a paucity of data assessing the direct effect of smoking on third-degree AV block. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study on adult-weighted admissions in 2019-2020 with a primary diagnosis of third-degree AV block and a history of smoking using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database. In-hospital mortality, rates of pacemaker insertion, cardiogenic shock, cardiac arrest, acute kidney injury (AKI), stroke, tracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, mechanical circulatory support, vasopressor use, length of stay (LOS), and total hospitalization costs were analyzed using regression analysis. We performed a secondary analysis using propensity score matching to confirm the results. Results: A total of 77,650 admissions met inclusion criteria (33,625 females [43.3 %], 58,315. Caucasians [75 %], 7030 African American [9 %], 6155 Hispanic [7.9 %]; mean [SD] age 75.4.[10.2] years) before propensity matching. A total of 29,380 (37.8 %) patients with AV block were smokers.A total of 5560 patients with and without a history of smoking were matched for the analysis. Smokers had.decreased odds of mortality (aOR, 0.59; CI, 0.44-0.78; p < 0.001), cardiogenic shock, cardiac arrest, tracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, shorter LOS, and lower total hospital costs in both the multivariable regression and propensity-matched analyses. Conclusion: Third-degree AV block had lower in-hospital mortality, cardiogenic shock, cardiac arrest, LOS, and total hospitalization cost in patients with smoking history.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study examines differences in reasons for e-cigarette, cigarette, and cannabis use across exclusive, dual, co-, and poly co-users. METHODS: Participants were 645 young adults who reported past 30-day (P30D) use of e-cigarettes, cigarettes, or cannabis at wave 14 (Fall, 2021) of the Texas Adolescent Tobacco Marketing and Surveillance System (TATAMS). Exclusive users reported P30D use of one product, dual users reported P30D use of e-cigarettes and cigarettes, co-users reported use of cannabis and one tobacco product, and poly co-users reported P30D use of all three products. Participants were asked if they agreed with a series of reasons for using their respective products. Multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine associations between reasons for use and pattern of use, controlling for sex, race/ethnicity, and lifetime product use. RESULTS: 26.36 % of P30D users reported cannabis and tobacco use. Poly co-users were more likely to report using e-cigarettes because their friends do than e-cigarette co-users (aRRR = 2.64; 95 %CI = 1.19-5.83) and dual tobacco users (aRRR = 5.11; 95 %CI = 1.73-15.12). Poly co-users were more likely to smoke cigarettes while drinking alcohol (aRRR = 4.68; 95 %CI = 1.06-20.72) or to experience a pleasurable buzz (aRRR = 5.48; 95 %CI = 1.62-18.57) than exclusive cigarette users. Poly co-users more often reported using cannabis for taste (aRRR = 3.13; 95 %CI = 1.51-6.51), because their friends use it (aRRR = 2.19; 95 %CI = 1.08-4.42), and while drinking alcohol (aRRR = 2.13; 95 %CI = 1.03-4.41) than exclusive cannabis users. CONCLUSIONS: Given that reasons for use differ significantly among types of multiple product users and exclusive users, interventions should be tailored to address the specific tobacco and cannabis use practices of young adults.

ABSTRACT

The toxicity of heated tobacco products (HTP) on the immune cells remains unclear. Here, U937-differentiated macrophages were exposed to a single and short-term exposure (30minutes) of HTP vapor or cigarette smoke (CS) in an air-liquid interface (ALI) system to evaluate the effects on macrophages' early activation and polarization. In our system, HTP released lower amounts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), but higher nicotine levels than CS into the cell culture supernatant. Both tobacco products triggered the expression of the α-7 nicotinic receptor (α7 nAChR) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. When challenged with a bacterial product, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), cells exposed to HTP or CS failed to respond properly and enhance ROS production upon LPS stimuli. Furthermore, both tobacco products also impaired bacterial phagocytosis and the exposures triggered higher IL-1ß secretion. The α7 nAChR antagonist treatment rescued the effects caused only by HTP exposure. The CS-exposed group switched macrophage to the pro-inflammatory M1, while HTP polarized to the suppressive M2 profile. Associated, data highlight that HTP and CS exposures similarly activate macrophages; nonetheless, the α7 nAChR pathway is only involved in HTP actions, and the distinct subsequent polarization caused by HTP or CS may influence the outcome of host defense.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To date, most tobacco product waste research focuses on cigarettes. Less is known about single-use 'disposable' e-cigarette waste, which contains several hazardous and toxic materials. This exploratory study examines self-reported methods for discarding disposables among a national sample of US adolescents and young adults. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND MEASUREMENTS: Data were obtained from a weekly cross-sectional survey of US residents aged 15-24 years. The analytical sample consisted of data collected from November 2022 to August 2023 from respondents who reported past-30-day use of disposables (n = 1313). Weighted multinomial logistic regressions examined the association between tobacco use behaviors and respondents' primary self-reported method for discarding disposables (reference group: 'throw them in the regular trash'), controlling for socio-demographic variables. FINDINGS: Approximately half of respondents discarded their empty disposables in the regular trash (52.9%). On average, respondents reported throwing away 3.1 disposables monthly [95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.83, 3.29]. Second most commonly, respondents reported keeping or collecting empty disposables (21.4%). Respondents who reported 10-30 days (versus 1-9) of past-month vaping were more likely to primarily keep or collect disposable e-cigarettes (relative risk reduction = 1.64, 95% CI = 1.20, 2.24) compared to discarding in the trash. CONCLUSIONS: Young people in the United States who use disposable e-cigarettes report primarily discarding their disposable e-cigarettes in the regular trash or keeping them. All reported disposal methods raise safety and environmental concerns.

ABSTRACT

Overexpression of T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin-domain containing-3 (TIM-3) on T cells has been observed in smokers. However, whether and how galectin-9 (Gal-9)/TIM-3 signal between T-regulatory cells (Tregs) and type 17 helper (Th17) cells contributes to tobacco smoke-induced airway inflammation remains unclear. Here, we aimed to explore the role of the Gal-9/TIM-3 signal between Tregs and Th17 cells during chronic tobacco smoke exposure. Tregs phenotype and the expression of TIM-3 on CD4+ T cells were detected in a mouse model of experimental emphysema. The role of TIM-3 in CD4+ T cells was explored in a HAVCR2-/- mouse model and in mice that received recombinant anti-TIM3. The crosstalk between Gal-9 and Tim-3 was evaluated by coculture Tregs with effector CD4+ T cells. We also invested the expression of Gal-9 in Tregs in patients with COPD. Our study revealed that chronic tobacco smoke exposure significantly reduces the frequency of Tregs in the lungs of mice and remarkably shapes the heterogeneity of Tregs by downregulating the expression of Gal-9. We observed a pro-inflammatory but restrained phenotypic transition of CD4+ T cells after tobacco smoke exposure, which was maintained by TIM-3. The restrained phenotype of CD4+ T cells was perturbed when TIM-3 was deleted or neutralised. Tregs from the lungs of mice with emphysema displayed a blunt ability to inhibit the differentiation and proliferation of Th17 cells. The inhibitory function of Tregs was partially restored by using recombinant Gal-9. The interaction between Gal-9 and TIM-3 inhibits the differentiation of Th17 cells and promotes apoptosis of CD4+ T cells, possibly by interfering with the expression of retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptor gamma t. The expression of Gal-9 in Tregs was reduced in patients with COPD, which was associated with Th17 response and lung function. These findings present a new paradigm that impairment of Gal-9/Tim-3 crosstalk between Tregs and Th17 cells during chronic tobacco smoke exposure promotes tobacco smoke-induced airway/lung inflammation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In 2017, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a regulatory plan to reduce the nicotine content of cigarettes. This study examines the association of exposure to industry-sponsored corrective statements on perceptions of the addictiveness of low-nicotine cigarettes relative to typical cigarettes within the general US population. METHODS: The study comprised 4975 US adult respondents of the 2019 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS 5, Cycle 3). Multinomial logistic regression models were used to examine associations between exposure to tobacco industry corrective messages and perceptions of the addictiveness of low-nicotine cigarettes relative to typical cigarettes. RESULTS: In the overall population, 4.1% reported that low-nicotine cigarettes were much more addictive than typical cigarettes, 67.5% said they were equally addictive, while 28.4% reported they were slightly/much less addictive. Adults exposed to industry-sponsored corrective messages had higher odds of perceiving low-nicotine cigarettes as equally addictive as typical cigarettes (aOR 1.57; 95% CI, 1.13-2.19) than those who saw no corrective messages. Those exposed to the corrective messages specifically about the addictiveness of smoking and nicotine had higher odds of perceiving low-nicotine cigarettes as equally addictive as typical cigarettes (aOR, 1.73; 95% CI, 1.07-2.81) compared to those who saw no corrective message. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that exposure to court-ordered tobacco industry corrective statements may have reinforced perceptions on the addictive potential of nicotine. However, study findings indicate a need for campaigns specifically tailored to address misperceptions observed in this study.

ABSTRACT

SMOKING AND TUBERCULOSIS. Tuberculosis and smoking are responsible for high mortality worldwide. Tuberculosis causes 9 million incident cases and 1.6 million deaths every year. Smoking increases the risk of infection by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and of severe tuberculosis disease with death or recurrence. Cessation of smoking improves the course of the disease, promoting adherence to anti-tuberculosis treatment and definitive cure. All health-care professionals involved in tuberculosis care must be involved to help smokers with tuberculosis to quit.


TABAC ET TUBERCULOSE. La tuberculose et le tabagisme sont à l'origine d'une importante mortalité dans le monde. La tuberculose cause 9 millions de cas incidents et 1,6 million de décès chaque année. Le tabagisme augmente les risques d'infection par Mycobacterium tuberculosis et de tuberculose maladie sévère avec décès ou récidive. L'arrêt du tabac améliore le cours de l'infection, favorisant l'adhésion des patients au traitement antituberculeux et la guérison définitive. Tous les professionnels de santé doivent s'investir dans la mission d'aide à l'arrêt du tabac des fumeurs atteints de tuberculose.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: The high co-occurrence of tobacco smoking in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) poses a serious health concern, linked to increased mortality and worse clinical outcomes. The mechanisms underlying this co-occurrence are not fully understood. STUDY DESIGN: Addressing the need for a comprehensive overview of the impact of tobacco use on SSD neurobiology, we conducted a systematic review of neuroimaging studies (including structural, functional, and neurochemical magnetic resonance imaging studies) that investigate the association between chronic tobacco smoking and brain alterations in patients with SSD. STUDY RESULTS: Eight structural and fourteen functional studies were included. Structural studies show widespread independent and additive reductions in gray matter in relation to smoking and SSD. The majority of functional studies suggest that smoking might be associated with improvements in connectivity deficits linked to SSD. However, the limited number of and high amount of cross-sectional studies, and high between-studies sample overlap prevent a conclusive determination of the nature and extent of the impact of smoking on brain functioning in patients with SSD. Overall, functional results imply a distinct neurobiological mechanism for tobacco addiction in patients with SSD, possibly attributed to differences at the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor level. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings highlight the need for more longitudinal and exposure-dependent studies to differentiate between inherent neurobiological differences and the (long-term) effects of smoking in SSD, and to unravel the complex interaction between smoking and schizophrenia at various disease stages. This could inform more effective strategies addressing smoking susceptibility in SSD, potentially improving clinical outcomes.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Indian cigarillos (bidi) are low-cost alternatives to cigarettes with only 22% imposed taxes, and turnover of upto INR 4 million per annum exempted from taxation. This paper estimates revenue implications and potential loss of life years (YLLs) averted, if bidi industry is subjected to increased regulations and taxation. METHODS: Revenue estimated at 10% increased regulation and 100% regulation were calculated, followed by estimates at taxes equivalent to cigarettes and World Health Organization - Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO-FCTC) recommendation. Price elasticity was considered to assess demand. Price change in separate fractions (previously regulated and unregulated) were calculated to obtain potential YLLs averted. RESULTS: Current revenue of USD 59.25 million is projected to increase to USD 179.25 million with 695,159 averted YLLs at cigarette equivalent taxes and 10% increased regulation; USD 639.38 million with 4,527,597 averted YLLs with 100% regulation; USD 54.75 million, at WHO recommended taxes with 2,233,740 YLLs averted at 10% increased regulation, and 10,486,192 YLLs at 100% regulation. CONCLUSION: Proposed estimates are inline with WHO recommendations as they consider price elasticity and suggest substantial increase in revenue, while averting YLLs. A national action is needed to drive the policy decisions towards increased regulation and taxation and revision of India's tobacco control legislation. IMPLICATIONS: Our study presented empirical evidence of how the currently underutilized tool of taxation, as proposed in the WHO-FCTC, can be utilized to decrease bidi smoking prevalence and save measurable life years while generating government revenue simultaneously. While the revenue statistics counter the misleading tobacco industry narratives, the projected reduction in mortality will be seen as an irrefutable driving force for policy reforms, targeted at strategic increase in regulation and taxation of the traditional Indian cigarillos industry.

BACKGROUND: Most people who smoke cigarettes report they want to quit in the future, but only 20 % are ready to quit within the next 30 days. This 3-arm pilot randomized controlled trial examined the feasibility and initial efficacy of a novel smartphone-based intervention that aimed to induce smoking cessation attempts among adults not initially ready to quit. METHODS: Participants randomized into the two intervention groups (Group 1: Phoenix App Only; Group 2: Phoenix App + Nicotine Replacement Therapy) received daily smoking cessation messages via smartphone application that were tailored to their current readiness to quit, while the attention control group (i.e., Factoid) received messages not related to smoking cessation. All participants completed a weekly survey for 26 weeks and used the app to set quit dates when/if desired. RESULTS: Participants (N=152) were female (67.8 %), White (75.7 %), 50.0 years old (SD=12.5), and smoked 20.4 cigarettes per day (SD=10.5). Results indicated that the Phoenix interventions were feasible (e.g., participants viewed ~185 messages over 26 weeks; 74.8 % of weekly surveys were completed; 85.5 % completed the 26-week follow-up assessment). Phoenix participants set more quit dates, set quit dates sooner, were abstinent for more days, and used smoking cessation medications on more days than those assigned to the Factoid group. CONCLUSIONS: This low-burden, smartphone-based smoking cessation induction intervention may increase smoking cessation attempts, and may reduce barriers that are encountered with traditional in-person or call-based interventions. BACKGROUND: Few studies examine the relationship between depression and use of specific tobacco and/or cannabis products among adolescents, young adults, and adults. We determined whether the odds of depression are greater among those who used specific tobacco and/or cannabis products and among co-users of tobacco and cannabis. METHOD: Cross-sectional online survey of a national convenience sample of 13-40-year-olds (N = 6,038). The survey included depression screening and past 30-day use of specific tobacco and cannabis products (cigarettes; e-cigarettes, vaped cannabis, little cigars, cigarillos, cigars, hookah, chewing tobacco, smoked cannabis, edible cannabis, blunts). Analyses correspond to the total sample, and 13-17-, 18-24-, and 25-40-year-olds. RESULTS: Among 5,281 individuals who responded to the depression screener and nine product use questions, 1,803 (34.1 %) reported co-use of at least one tobacco product and one cannabis product in the past 30 days. Past 30-day co-use was associated with higher likelihood of screening positive for depression compared to past 30-day use of tobacco-only (aOR = 1.32, 1.06-1.65; 0.006) or cannabis-only (aOR = 1.94, 1.28-2.94; <0.001). Screening positive for depression was more likely among those who reported past 30-day use of e-cigarettes (aOR = 1.56; 1.35-1.80; <0.001), cigarettes (aOR = 1.24, 1.04-1.48; 0.016), chewed tobacco (aOR = 1.91, 1.51-2.42; <0.001), and blunts (aOR = 1.22, 1.00-1.48; 0.053) compared to those who did not report past 30-day use of these products. Among the 2,223 individuals who screened positive for depression, the most used two-product combination was nicotine e-cigarettes and smoked cannabis (614 individuals, 27.6 %). CONCLUSIONS: Screening positive for depression was more likely among past 30-day co-users versus past 30-day users of tobacco-only or cannabis-only. Findings suggest that prevention programs for depression and substance use address tobacco and cannabis co-use.

ABSTRACT

Sclareol, a diterpene alcohol, is the most common starting material for the synthesis of ambrox, which serves as a sustainable substitute for ambergris, a valuable fragrance secreted by sperm whales. Sclareol has also been proposed to possess antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer activities. However, in nature, sclareol is only produced by a few plant species, including Cistus creticus, Cleome spinosa, Nicotiana glutinosa, and Salvia sclarea, which limits its commercial application. In this study, we cloned the two genes responsible for sclareol biosynthesis in S. sclarea, labda-13-en-8-ol diphosphate synthase (LPPS) and sclareol synthase (SS), and overexpressed them in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.). The best transgenic tobacco lines accumulated 4.1 µg/cm2 of sclareol, which is comparable to the sclareol production of N. glutinosa, a natural sclareol producer. Thus, sclareol synthesis in tobacco represents a potential alternative means for the production of this high-value compound.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Previous youth tobacco research has identified multiple factors relating to intentions to quit vaping and quit attempts among current e-cigarette users in adolescents. The pathways in the complex associations with vaping cessation behaviors remain unclear. METHODS: Using data from the 2022 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) (grades 6-12), structural equation models (SEMs) are developed to examine the associations of social environment, vaping risk perceptions, e-cigarette marketing, vaping characteristics, and demographics with two outcome measures - intentions to quit vaping and past year quit attempts among current e-cigarette users. RESULTS: The national sample of current e-cigarette users (n = 2,701) consisted of 52.7 % females, 47.0 % non-Hispanic Whites, 80.1 % high school students, and 56.2 % heterosexual individuals. Among them, 70.2 % reported intentions to quit vaping and 66.3 % reported past year quit attempts. The protective factor for quit intentions was vaping risk perceptions (p < 0.001). Risk factors included e-cigarette marketing (p = 0.04), dual use of e-cigarettes and other tobacco products (p = 0.003), vaping due to feeling anxious or stressed (p = 0.01), vaping for nicotine buzz (p = 0.002), nicotine dependence (p = 0.02), identifying as Gay or Lesbian (p < 0.001), bisexual (p = 0.03), or Hispanic (p = 0.04). Similar associations were observed with quit attempts except that e-cigarette marketing, vaping due to feeling anxious or stressed, vaping dependence, and identifying as Hispanic were not significant. Besides, high vaping frequency (p < 0.001), grade level (p < 0.001) and not sure about sexual orientation (p = 0.01) were also negatively associated with quit attempts. CONCLUSIONS: This study provided insights into factors influencing vaping cessation outcomes among adolescent current e-cigarette users. Developing tailored vaping cessation programs based on these findings could enhance quit success.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding who includes e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products (HTPs) in smoke-free home or car rules could inform public health interventions, particularly in countries with high smoking prevalence and recently implemented national smoke-free laws, like Armenia and Georgia. METHODS: In 2022, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among 1468 adults in 28 Armenian and Georgian communities (mean age=42.92 years; 51.4% female, 31.6% past-month smoking). Multilevel regression (accounting for clustering within communities; adjusted for sociodemographics and cigarette use) examined e-cigarette/HTP perceptions (risk, social acceptability) and use intentions in relation to: 1) including e-cigarettes/HTPs in home and car rules among participants with home and car rules, respectively (logistic regressions); and 2) intention to include e-cigarettes/HTPs in home rules (linear regression, 1 = 'not at all' to 7 = 'extremely') among those without home rules. RESULTS: Overall, 72.9% (n=1070) had home rules, 86.5% of whom included e-cigarettes/HTPs; 33.9% (n=498) had car rules, 81.3% of whom included e-cigarettes/HTPs. Greater perceived e-cigarette/HTP risk was associated with including e-cigarettes/HTPs in home rules (AOR=1.28; 95% CI: 1.08-1.50) and car rules (AOR=1.46; 95% CI: 1.14-1.87) and next-year intentions to include e-cigarettes/HTPs in home rules (ß=0.38; 95% CI: 0.25-0.50). Lower e-cigarette/HTP use intentions were associated with including e-cigarettes/HTPs in home rules (AOR=0.75; 95% CI: 0.63-0.88). While perceived social acceptability was unassociated with the outcomes, other social influences were: having children and no other household smokers was associated with including e-cigarettes/HTPs in car rules, and having children was associated with intent to include e-cigarettes/HTPs in home rules. CONCLUSIONS: Interventions to address gaps in home and car rules might target e-cigarette/HTP risk perceptions.

BACKGROUND: Quality smoking data is crucial for assessing smoking-related health risk and eligibility for interventions related to that risk. Smoking information collected in primary care practices (PCPs) is a major data source; however, little is known about the PCP smoking data quality. This project compared PCP smoking data to that collected in the Maori and Pacific Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening programme. METHODS: A two stage review was conducted. In Stage 1, data quality was assessed by comparing the PCP smoking data recorded close to AAA screening episodes with the data collected from participants at the AAA screening session. Inter-rater reliability was analysed using Cohen's kappa scores. In Stage 2, an audit of longitudinal smoking status was conducted, of a subset of participants potentially misclassified in Stage 1. Data were compared in three groups: current smoker (smoke at least monthly), ex-smoker (stopped > 1 month ago) and never smoker (smoked < 100 cigarettes in lifetime). RESULTS: Of the 1841 people who underwent AAA screening, 1716 (93%) had PCP smoking information. Stage 1 PCP smoking data showed 82% concordance with the AAA data (adjusted kappa 0.76). Fewer current or ex-smokers were recorded in PCP data. In the Stage 2 analysis of discordant and missing data (N = 313), 212 were enrolled in the 29 participating PCPs, and of these 13% were deceased and 41% had changed PCP. Of the 93 participants still enrolled in the participating PCPs, smoking status had been updated for 43%. Data on quantity, duration, or quit date of smoking were largely missing in PCP records. The AAA data of ex-smokers who were classified as never smokers in the Stage 2 PCP data (N = 27) showed a median smoking cessation duration of 32 years (range 0-50 years), with 85% (N = 23) having quit more than 15 years ago. CONCLUSIONS: PCP smoking data quality compared with the AAA data is consistent with international findings. PCP data captured fewer current and ex-smokers, suggesting ongoing improvement is important. Intervention programmes based on smoking status should consider complementary mechanisms to ensure eligible individuals are not missed from programme invitation.

Objective: Cannabis is frequently co-used with tobacco/nicotine products, especially among young adults. Little is known about the effects of this co-use on cannabis cessation outcomes. Within a sample of young adults using cannabis frequently (current use of ≥5 days/week in the past 3 months), this study aimed to (a) document sources of exposure to tobacco/nicotine products, whether used simultaneously with cannabis or on different occasions, (b) examine if the level of cumulated exposure to tobacco/nicotine (self-reported or from biochemical testing) could predict time to cannabis lapse during a cannabis abstinence period, and (c) explore the relationship between nicotine/tobacco exposure and time to cannabis lapse according to tobacco cigarette smoking status. Method: Urine cotinine measures and self-reported data on use of different tobacco/nicotine products, collected from 32 participants (aged 19 to 23), were analyzed to predict time to lapse during a 2-week period of attempted abstinence from cannabis, controlling for cannabis dependence and sex. Results: Half of participants (56.3%) used at least one tobacco/nicotine product. Higher urine cotinine, representing higher cumulated tobacco/nicotine exposure, was related to a higher risk of lapsing (Hazard Ratio [HR] = 1.64; 95%CI [1.04, 2.58]). The risk of lapsing was even higher ([HR] = 3.46; 95%CI [1.17, 10.25]) among heavily tobacco/nicotine exposed (>600 ng/mL, urine cotinine) participants than among unexposed (<50 ng/mL) or lightly/moderately exposed (50-600 ng/mL) participants. Among those smoking cigarettes (solely or in combination with other products), there was no relation between cotinine level and time to lapse, likely due to a reduced variability in abstinence probability and a high likelihood of lapse observed for higher cotinine levels, mainly achieved by cigarette use. Conclusions: With a rapidly changing landscape of tobacco/nicotine use, our results underscore the need to consider all sources of tobacco/nicotine exposure to fully understand the specific and cumulative contributions of tobacco/nicotine to cannabis cessation outcomes.

The cadmium (Cd) embedded in tobacco not only affects yield and quality but also harms human health. Microbial remediation has attracted widespread attention due to its low cost and minimal risk of secondary pollution. Therefore, researching microbes capable of inhibiting crop absorption of heavy metals or removing heavy metals from the environment has significant practical implications. This study screened a strain named H27 with a Cd immobilization efficiency of up to 76.60%. Static cultivation experiments showed that immobilization of Cd by H27 is achieved through intracellular absorption, hydroxyl, carboxyl, and phosphate group reactions on the cell wall. The bacterium can also secrete extracellular substances to adsorb Cd and increase the environmental pH, reducing the bioavailability of Cd. H27 reduced the accumulation of Cd in the stems of hydroponically grown tobacco by 55.23% and decreased the expression of three Cd transport genes, HAM2, IRT1, and NRAMP1, in the roots. Additionally, H27 increased the mineralization rate of organic matter, increased the content of humic acid in the soil, promoted the formation of smaller soil particles, and enhanced the adsorption and fixation of Cd by soil components while simultaneously raising the pH of rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils in tobacco growth environments. Both hydroponic and potted experiments showed that H27 alleviated the inhibitory effect of Cd on tobacco growth, significantly reducing Cd accumulation in various parts of tobacco and lowering the transfer coefficient of Cd within the tobacco plant. This study aims to effectively reduce the Cd content in tobacco using microbes, mitigate the harm of heavy metals in cigarettes to human health, and provide theoretical and practical basis for the application of microbial techniques to control heavy metal absorption in tobacco.

Biomass-degrading enzymes produced by microorganisms have a great potential in the processing of agricultural wastes. In order to produce suitable biomass-degrading enzymes for releasing sugars and aroma compounds from tobacco scraps, the feasibility of directly using the scraps as a carbon source for enzyme production was investigated in this study. By comparative studies of ten fungal strains isolated from tobacco leaves, Aspergillus brunneoviolaceus Ab-10 was found to produce an efficient enzyme mixture for the saccharification of tobacco scraps. Proteomic analysis identified a set of plant biomass-degrading enzymes in the enzyme mixture, including amylases, hemicellulases, cellulases and pectinases. At a substrate concentration of 100 g/L and enzyme dosage of 4 mg/g, glucose of 17.6 g/L was produced from tobacco scraps using the crude enzyme produced by A. brunneoviolaceus Ab-10. In addition, the contents of 23 volatile molecules, including the aroma compounds 4-ketoisophorone and benzyl alcohol, were significantly increased after the enzymatic treatment. The results provide a strategy for valorization of tobacco waste by integrating the production of biomass-degrading enzymes into the tobacco scrap processing system.

ABSTRACT

Cigarettes are part of a collection of objects found everywhere and smoked by a large part of the population. Cigarette butts can be an essential piece of evidence in identifying a certain suspect/witness, as they can suggest the positive identification or exclusion of one or more brands by comparison or even DNA analysis. The main objective of this study is to test the capability of Handheld X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (HHXRF) to analyze the elemental concentration of individual cigarette ash of several tobacco brands and investigate if it is further possible to discriminate the different brands based on their ash's elemental concentration. This study reveals the capability of HHXRF to discriminate tobacco brands based on their ashes' elemental concentration, with the great advantage of the analyses being non-destructive and can be carried out on a small sample. In addition, this equipment can measure the ash's elemental concentrations on-site, allowing for less contamination and sample loss.
