ABSTRACT

Implicit visuomotor sequence learning is crucial for acquiring skills that result in automated behaviors. The oscillatory dynamics underpinning this learning process are not well understood. To address this gap, the current study employed electroencephalography with a medium-density array (64 electrodes) to investigate oscillatory activity associated with implicit visuomotor sequence learning in the Serial Reaction Time task. In the task, participants unknowingly learn a series of finger movements. Eighty-five healthy adults participated in the study. Analyses revealed that theta activity at the vertex and alpha/beta activity over the motor areas decreased over the course of learning. No associations between alpha/beta and theta power were observed. These findings are interpreted within a dual-process framework: midline theta activity is posited to regulate top-down attentional processes, whereas beta activity from motor areas underlies the bottom-up encoding of sensory information from movement. From this model, we suggest that during implicit visuomotor sequence learning, top-down processes become disengaged (indicated by a reduction in theta activity), and modality specific bottom-up processes encode the motor sequence (indicated by a reduction in alpha/beta activity).

ABSTRACT

Despite progress developing experimentally-consistent models of insect in-flight sensing and feedback for individual agents, a lack of systematic understanding of the multi-agent and group performance of the resulting bio-inspired sensing and feedback approaches remains a barrier to robotic swarm implementations. This study introduces the small-target motion reactive (STMR) swarming approach by designing a concise engineering model of the small target motion detector (STMD) neurons found in insect lobula complexes. The STMD neuron model identifies the bearing angle at which peak optic flow magnitude occurs, and this angle is used to design an output feedback switched control system. A theoretical stability analysis provides bi-agent stability and state boundedness in group contexts. The approach is simulated and implemented on ground vehicles for validation and behavioral studies. The results indicate despite having the lowest connectivity of contemporary approaches (each agent instantaneously regards only a single neighbor), collective group motion can be achieved. STMR group level metric analysis also highlights continuously varying polarization and decreasing heading variance.

ABSTRACT

Prism adaptation (PA) induces the after-effects of adapted tasks and transfers after-effects of non-adapted tasks, in which PA with pointing movements transfers to postural displacement during eyes-closed standing. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the transfer of PA after-effects on standing postural displacement remain unclear. The present study investigated the region-specific effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and cerebellum during prism exposure (PE) on standing postural displacement in healthy adults. Forty-two healthy young adults were grouped into pointing during PE with cathodal tDCS over the right PPC, anodal tDCS over the right cerebellum, and sham tDCS groups. They received 20 min of tDCS, during which they pointed to the visual targets while wearing prism lenses with a leftward visual shift (30 diopters) for 15 min. During the early PE, the pointing errors in the cerebellum group were significantly displaced more accurately toward the targets than those in the PPC group. However, after leftward PE, all groups had similar rightward displacements of the straight-ahead pointing with eyes closed. The PPC group only exhibited significant rightward center-of-pressure displacement during eyes-closed standing with feet-closed after leftward PE. The perception of longitudinal body axis rotation, as an indicator of the subjective body vertical axis, did not differ significantly between the pre- and post-evaluations in all groups. These results show that the PPC during PE could make an important neural contribution to inducing transfer of PA after-effect on standing postural displacement.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to clarify the temporal coordination between gaze, head, and arm movements during forehand rallies in table tennis. Collegiate male table tennis players (n = 7) conducted forehand rallies at a constant tempo (100, 120, and 150 bpm) using a metronome. In each tempo condition, participants performed 30 strokes (a total of 90 strokes). Gaze, head, and dominant arm (shoulder, elbow, and wrist) movements were recorded with an eye-tracking device equipped with a Gyro sensor and a 3-D motion capture system. The results showed that the effect of head movements relative to gaze movements was significantly higher than that of eye movements in the three tempo conditions. Our results indicate that head movements are closely associated with gaze movements during rallies. Furthermore, cross-correlation coefficients (CCs) between head and arm movements were more than 0.96 (maximum coefficient: 0.99). In addition, head and arm movements were synchronized during rallies. Finally, CCs between gaze and arm movements were more than 0.74 (maximum coefficient: 0.99), indicating that gaze movements are temporally coordinated with arm movements. Taken together, head movements could play important roles not only in gaze tracking but also in the temporal coordination with arm movements during table tennis forehand rallies.

ABSTRACT

Poor maths skills are associated with negative outcomes throughout life, such as lower academic qualifications, decreased professional success and socio-economic results. Mathematical skills emerge continuously throughout childhood and those that children acquire in pre-school are crucial for activities that support analytical thinking, problem-solving and reasoning and argumentation skills. Many of these activities are related to motor skills, since certain cognitive and motor areas of the brain are activated simultaneously when solving maths problems. Of all motor skills, visuomotor integration skills have been documented as those that are most consistently positively and significantly associated with maths performance in pre-school children. These skills are influenced by visual perception (spatial and attention skills), fine motor coordination and gross motor skills. Early intervention can improve visuomotor integration skills in pre-school children. Of all skills that make up visuomotor integration, spatial skills, in addition to being the first skills to influence numerical knowledge and the recognition of geometric shapes, are also those skills that form part of the majority of programs and activities to be worked on with pre-school children for the development of mathematical concepts. However, most intervention programs or activities to develop spatial skills are carried out in the classroom, usually through activities involving handling small objects. In this sense and given the significant association between visuomotor integration skills and gross motor skills, the main objective of this study was to list a set of activities to develop spatial skills, with a strong involvement of gross motor skills, in a classroom, playground or home context.

ABSTRACT

The intention to act influences the computations of various task-relevant features. However, little is known about the time course of these computations. Furthermore, it is commonly held that these computations are governed by conjunctive neural representations of the features. But, support for this view comes from paradigms arbitrarily combining task features and affordances, thus requiring representations in working memory. Therefore, the present study used electroencephalography and a well-rehearsed task with features that afford minimal working memory representations to investigate the temporal evolution of feature representations and their potential integration in the brain. Female and male human participants grasped objects or touched them with a knuckle. Objects had different shapes and were made of heavy or light materials with shape and weight being relevant for grasping, not for "knuckling." Using multivariate analysis showed that representations of object shape were similar for grasping and knuckling. However, only for grasping did early shape representations reactivate at later phases of grasp planning, suggesting that sensorimotor control signals feed back to the early visual cortex. Grasp-specific representations of material/weight only arose during grasp execution after object contact during the load phase. A trend for integrated representations of shape and material also became grasp-specific but only briefly during the movement onset. These results suggest that the brain generates action-specific representations of relevant features as required for the different subcomponents of its action computations. Our results argue against the view that goal-directed actions inevitably join all features of a task into a sustained and unified neural representation.

ABSTRACT

Motor adaptations are responsible for recalibrating actions and facilitating the achievement of goals in a constantly changing environment. Once consolidated, the decay of motor adaptation is a process affected by available sensory information during deadaptation. However, the cortical response to task error feedback during the deadaptation phase has received little attention. Here, we explored changes in brain cortical responses due to feedback of task-related error during deadaptation. Twelve healthy volunteers were recruited for the study. Right hand movement and EEG were recorded during repetitive trials of a hand reaching movement. A visuomotor rotation of 30° was introduced to induce motor adaptation. Volunteers participated in two experimental sessions organized in baseline, adaptation, and deadaptation blocks. In the deadaptation block, the visuomotor rotation was removed, and visual feedback was only provided in one session. Performance was quantified using angle end-point error, averaged speed, and movement onset time. A non-parametric spatiotemporal cluster-level permutation test was used to analyze the EEG recordings. During deadaptation, participants experienced a greater error reduction when feedback of the cursor was provided. The EEG responses showed larger activity in the left centro-frontal parietal areas during the deadaptation block when participants received feedback, as opposed to when they did not receive feedback. Centrally distributed clusters were found for the adaptation and deadaptation blocks in the absence of visual feedback. The results suggest that visual feedback of the task-related error activates cortical areas related to performance monitoring, depending on the accessible sensory information.

ABSTRACT

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a noninvasive method for brain stimulation that artificially modulates oscillatory brain activity in the cortical region directly beneath the electrodes by applying a weak alternating current. Beta (ß) oscillatory activity in the supplementary motor area (SMA) is involved in motor planning and maintenance, whereas gamma (γ) oscillatory activity is involved in the updating of motor plans. However, the effect of applying tACS to the SMA on motor learning has not yet been investigated. This study assessed the effects of applying tACS to the SMA on motor learning. Forty-two right-handed healthy adults (age 20.6 ± 0.5 years, 24 men and 18 women) were included. Motor learning was assessed using a visuomotor tracking task with pinch tension of the right thumb and right forefinger. Each trial lasted 60 s, and the error rates were measured. Conductive rubber electrodes were attached to the SMA and the left shoulder for tACS. Stimulation was applied at an intensity of 1.0 mA and frequencies of 70 and 20 Hz in the γ-tACS and ß-tACS treatment groups, respectively. The sham group was only administered a fade-in/out. The visuomotor tracking task was performed for 10 trials before tACS and 10 trials after tACS. Two trials were conducted on the following day to determine motor skill retention. The average deviation measured during 60 s was considered the error value. Pre-stimulation learning rate was calculated as the change in error rate. Post-stimulation learning rate and retention rate were calculated as the change in error rate after stimulation and on the day after stimulation, respectively. In both the stimulation groups, differences in pre-stimulation learning, post-stimulation learning, and retention rates were not significant. However, in the γ-tACS group, baseline performance and pre-stimulation learning rate were positively correlated with post-stimulation learning rate. Therefore, applying γ-tACS to the SMA can increase post-stimulation learning rate in participants exhibiting low baseline performance and high pre-stimulation learning rate. Our findings suggest that motor learning can be effectively enhanced by applying γ-tACS to the SMA based on an individual's motor and learning abilities.

Background: Prismatic adaptation (PA) is a visuomotor technique using prismatic glasses that are capable of moving the visual field and to affect the excitability of certain brain areas. The aim of this pilot study was to explore potential acute effects of PA on penalty kick accuracy and postural control in youth soccer players. Methods: In this randomized crossover study, seven young male soccer players performed three PA sessions (rightward PA, r-PA; leftward PA, l-PA; sham PA, s-PA) with a washout period of 1-week between them. Immediately before and after each PA session, penalty kick accuracy and postural control were assessed. Results: We detected an increase in penalty kick accuracy following PA, regardless of the deviation side of the prismatic glasses (F1,5 = 52.15; p = 0.08; ηp2 = 0.981). In detail, our results showed an increase in the penalty kick accuracy toward the right target of the football goal following r-PA and toward the left target of the football goal following l-PA. We detected a significant effect on the sway path length (F2,12 = 10.42; p = 0.002; ηp2 = 0.635) and the sway average speed (F2,12 = 9.17; p = 0.004; ηp2 = 0.605) parameters in the stabilometric test with open eyes following PA, regardless of the deviation side of the prismatic glasses. In detail, our results showed a significant difference in both the stabilometric parameters (p = 0.016 and p = 0.009, respectively) only following l-PA. Conclusion: The findings of this pilot study indicate that PA could positively affect penalty kick accuracy and postural control suggesting that PA could be used as a visual training technique in athletes.

Objective.This study explores the changes in the organization of functional brain networks induced by performing a visuomotor integration task, as revealed by noninvasive spontaneous electroencephalographic traces (EEG).Approach.EEG data were acquired during the execution of the Nine Hole Peg Test (NHPT) with the dominant and non-dominant hands in a group of 44 right-handed volunteers. Both spectral analysis and phase-based connectivity analysis were performed in the theta (ϑ), mu (µ) and beta (ß) bands. Graph Theoretical Analysis (GTA) was also performed to investigate the topological reorganization induced by motor task execution.Main results.Spectral analysis revealed an increase of frontoparietal ϑ power and a spatially diffused reduction ofµand ß contribution, regardless of the hand used. GTA showed a significant increase in network integration induced by movement performed with the dominant limb compared to baseline in the ϑ band. Theµand ß bands were associated with a reduction in network integration during the NHPT. In theµrhythm, this result was more evident for the right-hand movement, while in the ß band, results did not show dependence on the laterality. Finally, correlation analysis highlighted an association between frequency-specific topology measures and task performance for both hands.Significance.Our results show that functional brain networks reorganize during visually guided movements in a frequency-dependent manner, differently depending on the hand used (dominant/non dominant).

ABSTRACT

Our study addresses the critical question of how learners acquire skills without the constant crutch of feedback, using a specialized training approach with intermittent feedback. Despite recognized benefits in skill retention, the underlying mechanisms of intermittent feedback in motor control neuroscience remain elusive. Leveraging a previously published dataset from visuomotor learning experiments with intermittent feedback, we tested a wide range of proxy-process models that posit the presence of an inferred error signal even when an explicit sensory performance is not present. The model structures encompassed a spectrum from first-order to higher-order variants, incorporating both constant and error-dependent rates of change in error. Furthermore, these proxy-process models investigated the impact of error-augmentation (EA) training on visuomotor learning dynamics. Rigorous cross-validation consistently identified a second-order proxy-process model structure accurately predicting motor learning across subjects and learning tasks. Model parameters elucidated the varying influences of EA settings on the rates of change in error, inter-trial variability, and steady-state performance. We then introduced a dynamic-Proxy support Multi-Rate Motor Learning (dPxMRML) model, which shed light on EA's effects on the fast and slow learning dynamics. The dPxMRML model accurately predicted subjects' performance during and beyond training phases, highlighting EA settings conducive to long-term retention. This research yields crucial insights for personalized training program design, applicable in neuro-rehabilitation, sports, and performance training.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Breaking new ground in motor learning, our research unveils the intricacies of skill acquisition without continuous feedback. By using a specialized training approach with intermittent feedback, our study reveals the previously elusive mechanisms behind this process. The introduction of innovative proxy-process models, particularly the dynamic-Proxy support Multi-Rate Motor Learning (dPxMRML) model, brings a fresh perspective to understanding the impact of error-augmentation (EA) training on learning and retention of motor skills.

ABSTRACT

Localizing one's body parts is important for movement control and motor learning. Recent studies have shown that the precision with which people localize their hand places constraints on motor adaptation. Although these studies have assumed that hand localization remains equally precise across learning, we show that precision decreases rapidly during early motor learning. In three experiments, healthy young participants (n = 92) repeatedly adapted to a 45° visuomotor rotation for a cycle of two to four reaches, followed by a cycle of two to four reaches with veridical feedback. Participants either used an aiming strategy that fully compensated for the rotation (experiment 1), or always aimed directly at the target, so that adaptation was implicit (experiment 2). We omitted visual feedback for the last reach of each cycle, after which participants localized their unseen hand. We observed an increase in the variability of angular localization errors when subjects used a strategy to counter the visuomotor rotation (experiment 1). This decrease in precision was less pronounced in the absence of reaiming (experiment 2), and when subjects knew that they would have to localize their hand on the upcoming trial, and could thus focus on hand position (experiment 3). We propose that strategic reaiming decreases the precision of perceived hand position, possibly due to attention to vision rather than proprioception. We discuss how these dynamics in precision during early motor learning could impact on motor control and shape the interplay between implicit and strategy-based motor adaptation.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Recent studies indicate that the precision with which people localize their hand limits implicit visuomotor learning. We found that localization precision is not static, but decreases early during learning. This decrease is pronounced when people apply a reaiming strategy to compensate for a visuomotor perturbation and is partly resistant to allocation of attention to the hand. We propose that these dynamics in position sense during learning may influence how implicit and strategy-based motor adaption interact.

ABSTRACT

We used diverse methods to characterize the role of avian lateral spiriform nucleus (SpL) in basal ganglia motor function. Connectivity analysis showed that SpL receives input from globus pallidus (GP), and the intrapeduncular nucleus (INP) located ventromedial to GP, whose neurons express numerous striatal markers. SpL-projecting GP neurons were large and aspiny, while SpL-projecting INP neurons were medium sized and spiny. Connectivity analysis further showed that SpL receives inputs from subthalamic nucleus (STN) and substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr), and that the SNr also receives inputs from GP, INP, and STN. Neurochemical analysis showed that SpL neurons express ENK, GAD, and a variety of pallidal neuron markers, and receive GABAergic terminals, some of which also contain DARPP32, consistent with GP pallidal and INP striatal inputs. Connectivity and neurochemical analysis showed that the SpL input to tectum prominently ends on GABAA receptor-enriched tectobulbar neurons. Behavioral studies showed that lesions of SpL impair visuomotor behaviors involving tracking and pecking moving targets. Our results suggest that SpL modulates brainstem-projecting tectobulbar neurons in a manner comparable to the demonstrated influence of GP internus on motor thalamus and of SNr on tectobulbar neurons in mammals. Given published data in amphibians and reptiles, it seems likely the SpL circuit represents a major direct pathway-type circuit by which the basal ganglia exerts its motor influence in nonmammalian tetrapods. The present studies also show that avian striatum is divided into three spatially segregated territories with differing connectivity, a medial striato-nigral territory, a dorsolateral striato-GP territory, and the ventrolateral INP motor territory.

Visual information is essential to navigate the environment and maintain postural stability during gait. Visual field rotations alter the perceived heading direction, resulting in gait trajectory deviations, known as visual coupling. It is unclear how center of mass (CoM) control relative to a continuously changing base of support (BoS) is adapted to facilitate visual coupling. This study aimed to characterize mediolateral (ML) balance control during visual coupling in steady-state gait. Sixteen healthy participants walked on an instrumented treadmill, naive to sinusoidal low-frequency (0.1 Hz) rotations of the virtual environment around the vertical axis. Rotations were continuous with 1) high or 2) low amplitude or were 3) periodic with 10-s intervals. Visual coupling was characterized with cross-correlations between CoM trajectory and visual rotations. Balance control was characterized with the ML margin of stability (MoSML) and by quantifying foot placement control as the relation between CoM dynamics and lateral foot placement. Visual coupling was strong on a group level (continuous low: 0.88, continuous high: 0.91, periodic: 0.95) and moderate to strong on an individual level. Higher rotation amplitudes induced stronger gait trajectory deviations. The MoSML decreased toward the deviation direction and increased at the opposite side. Foot placement control was similar compared with regular gait. Furthermore, pelvis and foot reorientation toward the rotation direction was observed. We concluded that visual coupling was facilitated by reorientating the body and shifting the extrapolated CoMML closer to the lateral BoS boundary toward the adjusted heading direction while preserving CoM excursion and foot placement control.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Healthy, naive participants were unaware of subtle, low-frequency rotations of the visual field but still coupled their gait trajectory to a rotating virtual environment. In response, participants decreased their margin of stability toward the new heading direction, without changing the center of mass excursion magnitude and foot placement strategy.

ABSTRACT

Individuals rely on visual information to determine when to adapt their behaviours (i.e., by changing path and/or speed) to avoid an approaching object or person. After initiating an avoidance behaviour, individuals may control the space (i.e., minimum clearance distance) between themselves and another person or object. The current study aimed to determine the action strategies of young adults while avoiding a virtual pedestrian approaching along a 45° angle in an attentionally demanding task. Twenty-one young adults (22.9 ± 1.9 yrs., 11 males) were immersed in a virtual environment and were instructed to walk along a 7.5 m path towards a goal located along the midline. Two virtual pedestrians (VP) positioned 2.83 m to the left and right of the midline approached participants on a 45° angle. To manipulate the point at which the participants and the VP would intersect during different trials, the VP approached at one of three speeds: 0.8×, 1.0×, or 1.2× each participants' average walking speed. Participants were instructed to walk to a goal without colliding with the VP while performing the attention task; reporting whether a shape changed above the VPs' heads. Results revealed that young adults did not modulate their timing of avoidance to the approach characteristics of the VP, as they consistently avoided the collision 1.67 s after the VP began moving. However, young adults seem to control how they avoid an oncoming collision by maintaining a consistent safety margin after an avoidance behaviour was initiated.

ABSTRACT

Manual motor performance declines with age, but the extent to which age influences the acquisition of new skills remains a topic of debate. Here, we examined whether older healthy adults show less training-dependent performance improvements during a single session of a bimanual pinch task than younger adults. We also explored whether physical and cognitive factors, such as grip strength or motor-cognitive ability, are associated with performance improvements. Healthy younger (n = 16) and older (n = 20) adults performed three training blocks separated by short breaks. Participants were tasked with producing visually instructed changes in pinch force using their right and left thumb and index fingers. Task complexity was varied by shifting between bimanual mirror-symmetric and inverse-asymmetric changes in pinch force. Older adults generally displayed higher visuomotor force tracking errors during the more complex inverse-asymmetric task compared to younger adults. Both groups showed a comparable net decrease in visuomotor force tracking error over the entire session, but their improvement trajectories differed. Young adults showed enhanced visuomotor tracking error only in the first block, while older adults exhibited a more gradual improvement over the three training blocks. Furthermore, grip strength and performance on a motor-cognitive test battery scaled positively with individual performance improvements during the first block in both age groups. Together, the results show subtle age-dependent differences in the rate of bimanual visuomotor skill acquisition, while overall short-term learning ability is maintained.

ABSTRACT

Objective.The functional asymmetry between the two brain hemispheres in language and spatial processing is well documented. However, a description of difference in control between the two hemispheres in motor function is not well established. Our primary objective in this study was to examine the distribution of control in the motor hierarchy and its variation across hemispheres.Approach.We developed a computation model termed the bilateral control network and implemented the same in a neural network framework to be used to replicate certain experimental results. The network consists of a simple arm model capable of making movements in 2D space and a motor hierarchy with separate elements coding target location, estimated position of arm, direction, and distance to be moved by the arm, and the motor command sent to the arm. The main assumption made here is the division of direction and distance coding between the two hemispheres with distance coded in the non-dominant and direction coded in the dominant hemisphere.Main results.With this assumption, the network was able to show main results observed in visuomotor adaptation studies. Importantly it showed decrease in error exhibited by the untrained arm while the other arm underwent training compared to the corresponding naïve arm's performance-transfer of motor learning from trained to the untrained arm. It also showed how this varied depending on the performance variable used-with distance as the measure, the non-dominant arm showed transfer and with direction, dominant arm showed transfer.Significance.Our results indicate the possibility of shared control between the two hemispheres. If indeed found true, this result could have major significance in motor rehabilitation as treatment strategies will need to be designed in order to account for this and can no longer be confined to the arm contralateral to the affected hemisphere.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The concept of affordance refers to the opportunities for action provided by the environment, often conveyed through visual information. It has been applied to explain visuomotor processing and movement planning. As emotion modulates both visual perception and the motor system, it is reasonable to ask whether emotion can influence affordance judgments. If present, this relationship can have important ontological implications for affordances. Thus, we investigated whether the emotional value of manipulable objects affected the judgment of the appropriate grasping that could be used to interact with them (i.e., their affordance). Methods: Volunteers were instructed to use a numerical scale to report their judgment on how an observed object should be grasped. We compared these judgments across emotional categories of objects (pleasant, unpleasant and neutral), while also considering the expected effect of object size. Results: We found that unpleasant objects were rated as more appropriately graspable by a precision grip than pleasant and neutral objects. Simultaneously, smaller object size also favored this judgment. This effect was seen in all emotional categories examined in equal magnitude. Discussion: Our findings suggest that the emotional value of objects modulates affordance judgments in a way that favors careful manipulation and minimal physical contact with aversive stimuli. Finally, we discuss how this affective aspect of our experience of objects overlaps with what affordances are conceptualized to be, calling for further reexamination of the relationship between affordances and emotions.

ABSTRACT

Human movements are adjusted by motor adaptation in order to maintain their accuracy. There are two systems in motor adaptation, referred to as explicit or implicit adaptation. It has been suggested that the implicit adaptation is based on the prediction error and has been used in a number of motor adaptation studies. This study aimed to examine the effect of visual memory on prediction error in implicit visuomotor adaptation by comparing visually- and memory-guided reaching tasks. The visually-guided task is thought to be implicit learning based on prediction error, whereas the memory-guided task requires more cognitive processes. We observed the adaptation to visuomotor rotation feedback that is gradually rotated. We found that the adaptation and retention rates were higher in the visually-guided task than in the memory-guided task. Furthermore, the delta-band power obtained by electroencephalography (EEG) in the visually-guided task was increased immediately following the visual feedback, which indicates that the prediction error was larger in the visually-guided task. Our results show that the visuomotor adaptation is enhanced in the visually-guided task because the prediction error, which contributes update of the internal model, was more reliable than in the memory-guided task. Therefore, we suggest that the processing of the prediction error is affected by the task-type, which in turn affects the rate of the visuomotor adaptation.

ABSTRACT

The transformation from perception to action requires a set of neuronal decisions about the nature of the percept, identification and selection of response options and execution of the appropriate motor response. The unfolding of such decisions is mediated by distributed representations of the decision variables-evidence and intentions-that are represented through oscillatory activity across the cortex. Here we combine magneto-electroencephalography and linear ballistic accumulator models of decision-making to reveal the impact of Parkinson's disease during the selection and execution of action. We used a visuomotor task in which we independently manipulated uncertainty in sensory and action domains. A generative accumulator model was optimized to single-trial neurophysiological correlates of human behaviour, mapping the cortical oscillatory signatures of decision-making, and relating these to separate processes accumulating sensory evidence and selecting a motor action. We confirmed the role of widespread beta oscillatory activity in shaping the feed-forward cascade of evidence accumulation from resolution of sensory inputs to selection of appropriate responses. By contrasting the spatiotemporal dynamics of evidence accumulation in age-matched healthy controls and people with Parkinson's disease, we identified disruption of the beta-mediated cascade of evidence accumulation as the hallmark of atypical decision-making in Parkinson's disease. In frontal cortical regions, there was inefficient processing and transfer of perceptual information. Our findings emphasize the intimate connection between abnormal visuomotor function and pathological oscillatory activity in neurodegenerative disease. We propose that disruption of the oscillatory mechanisms governing fast and precise information exchanges between the sensory and motor systems contributes to behavioural changes in people with Parkinson's disease.
