ABSTRACT

The No-till system and organic fertilization combined can be a potential strategy to avoid nutrient leaching, as the soil structure plays a crucial role in retaining them. In this study, we evaluated the influence of different rates of a bio-fertilizer made of industrial organic waste (IOW) from a poultry slaughterhouse on the percolation and stocks of nitrate in disturbed and undisturbed soil samples collected from a subtropical no-till field in southern Brazil. In an incubation experiment, we performed a percolation experiment using lysimeters and simulated rainfall for 180 days and evaluated the remaining soil nitrate stock after the incubation period. We set up a completely randomized experiment with three replicates using four IOW rates (equivalent to 0, 2, 4, and 8 Mg ha-1) and two sample types: disturbed and undisturbed soils. Using the bio-fertilizer increased nitrate mineralization from 0.77 to 1.55 kg ha-1 day-1. Overall, the IOW application increased the amount of percolated nitrate, significantly influenced by the simulated rainfall (p < 0.01). The amount of water flushed through the lysimeters was significantly higher for the disturbed soils (p < 0.05, LSD test), suggesting that the loosened structure promoted a higher water flux. No differences were observed between undisturbed and disturbed samples for nitrate percolation, implying that the amount of nitrate in the liquid soil phase may be a more critical factor in determining nitrate leaching than the water flux. The disturbed samples presented significantly higher nitrate percolation with increasing IOW rates, regardless of precipitation. Stocks in the 0-5 cm depth were 6.6 kg ha-1 higher for undisturbed samples (p < 0.05, LSD test). This result suggests preserving the soil structure can significantly increase the nitrate stocks upon IOW application.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of extremely brief meditation (EBMI) or brief mindfulness interventions (Brief MI) on pregnancy rate in women undergoing Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). METHODS: This is a prospective, three-armed, randomized controlled trial with women undergoing ART cycle, age ranging from 18 to 50 years. In the day of embryo transfer, the patients randomized to Brief MI group received a 15-minute audio of mindfulness. They were instructed to practice it daily, starting from the day of embryo transfer to the day of the pregnancy test, leading to a total of 180-210 minutes. Women randomized to EBMI met once a week during the waiting time between the embryo transfer and pregnancy test day in the same virtual room with a meditator instructor for 40 minutes, totalizing two sessions (80 minutes). The pregnancy rate was assessed via a blood test to measure hCG performed 2 weeks after embryo transfer. RESULTS: A total of 68 women aged 37.5 ± 4.3y were included (EBMI, n = 24; Brief MI, n = 22 and CG, n = 22). Pearson's Chi-square test and Student's t-test for independent samples showed no significant differences between intervention and control groups. Both EBMI and Brief MI had no significant effect on pregnancy rate in women undergoing ART. CONCLUSION: This randomized control trial revealed that the extremely brief meditation (EBMI) or self-managed brief mindfulness intervention (Brief MI) had no significant effect on pregnancy rates in infertile women undergoing ART cycles. ABSTRACT

Background: The dynamics of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in soils determine their fertility and crop growth in agroecosystems. These dynamics depend on microbial metabolism, which in turn depends on nutrient availability. Farmers typically apply either mineral or organic fertilizers to increase the availability of nutrients in soils. Phosphorus, which usually limits plant growth, is one of the most applied nutrients. Our knowledge is limited regarding how different forms of P impact the ability of microbes in soils to produce the enzymes required to release nutrients, such as C, N and P from different substrates. Methods: In this study, we used the arable layer of a calcareous soil obtained from an alfalfa cropland in Cuatro Cienegas, México, to perform an incubation experiment, where five different phosphate molecules were added as treatments substrates: three organic molecules (RNA, adenine monophosphate (AMP) and phytate) and two inorganic molecules (calcium phosphate and ammonium phosphate). Controls did not receive added phosphorus. We measured nutrient dynamics and soil microbial activity after 19 days of incubation. Results: Different P molecules affected potential microbial C mineralization (CO2-C) and enzyme activities, specifically in the organic treatments. P remained immobilized in the microbial biomass (Pmic) regardless of the source of P, suggesting that soil microorganisms were limited by phosphorus. Higher mineralization rates in soil amended with organic P compounds depleted dissolved organic carbon and increased nitrification. The C:N:P stoichiometry of the microbial biomass implied a change in the microbial community which affected the carbon use efficiency (CUE), threshold elemental ratio (TER), and homeostasis. Conclusion: Different organic and inorganic sources of P affect soil microbial community structure and metabolism. This modifies the dynamics of soil C, N and P. These results highlight the importance of considering the composition of organic matter and phosphate compounds used in agriculture since their impact on the microbial activity of the soil can also affect plant productivity.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) have been primarily studied for atmospheric nitrogen (N) fixation but they also have the capacity to improve nutrition and yield of crop plants. Methods: Therefore, the objective of this research was to investigate the effects of inoculation with PGPB in association with different N rates on N uptake, grain yield, and oil concentration of dwarf castor beans in succession to legumes and grasses in Ilha Solteira, Brazil. The treatments consisted of N rates (0 to 180 kg ha-1 of N) and inoculation with three plant growth-promoting bacteria (Azospirillum brasiliense, Bacillus subtilis, and Pseudomonas fluorescens, applied by leaf) and a control with no-inoculation. Results: The grain and oil yields of castor beans were increased by 20 and 40% at a rate of 103 kg ha-1 of N in succession to grasses as compared to without N application. In addition, the grain yield of castor bean after legumes was increased by 28, 64, and 40% with estimated rates of 97, 113, and 92 kg ha-1 of N in combination with inoculations of A. brasilense, B. subtilis, and P. fluorescens as compared to without N application, respectively. Shoot, grain, and total N uptake were improved with foliar inoculation of A. brasilense, B. subtilis, and P. fluorescens at the N rates of 45, 90, and 135 kg ha-1, respectively. Discussion and conclusions: Topdressing of N at the rate of 103 kg ha-1 and foliar inoculation in succession to grasses and 180 kg ha-1 of N without the effect of foliar inoculation in succession to legumes are recommended for higher grain and oil yield of castor beans. Foliar inoculations with A. brasilense, B. subtilis, and P. fluorescens increased grain yield under reduced use of N fertilizer by 44, 37, and 49% in dwarf castor cultivation in succession to legumes, potentially contributing to sustainable agriculture.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of prior use of combined oral contraceptives in assisted reproduction techniques with ovulation blockade by oral progestin. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study with a single-center convenience sample of patients treated between 2018 and 2021. Two groups were compared: with and without a history of combined oral contraceptives (comparator). The clinical variables were age, body mass index, type of infertility and smoking. Regarding treatment, antral follicle count; follicles >14 mm; oocytes in metaphase I and II; number of embryos; days of treatment; total dose of medication, chemical and clinical pregnancy rate and delivery after 1st embryo transfer. Absolute and relative frequencies were used for the qualitative variables; means, medians and t-test for the quantitative ones. Association between qualitative variables used the Chi-square test and, for quantitative variables, the Mann-Whitney test (p<0.05). The statistical program used was Stata 16.0. RESULTS: Among 407 medical records, 351 were included (combined oral contraceptive=243 and comparator=108). The combined oral contraceptive and the comparator groups had, respectively, mean (SD±) age 38.2 (4.5) and 38.2 (4.5) years; chemical pregnancy rates of 30.5% and 29.6% (p=0.281); clinical pregnancy rates of 24.8% and 24.1% (p=0.313) and abortion, 5% and 4.6% (p=0.544). The median time on combined oral contraceptives was 6 years. CONCLUSIONS: Previous use of combined oral contraceptives did not impact reproductive results in relation to the comparator group in patients undergoing assisted reproduction techniques in protocols with oral progestin.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the correlation between serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and the number of oocytes retrieved after controlled ovarian stimulation for in vitro fertilization treatments and determine cut-off values predictive of poor and high response to stimulation. METHODS: It was performed a retrospective observational study that included 1003 cycles of controlled ovarian stimulation carried between February 2017 and December 2023 at a Medically Assisted Procreation Centre. The exclusion criteria were the following: serum AMH levels obtained more than 6 months prior to the start of the ovarian stimulation, the presence of a single ovary, non-Caucasian ethnicity, a controlled ovarian stimulation cycle performed for the purpose of oocyte donation or fertility preservation, a documented diagnosis of endometriosis, a documented history of ovarian surgery and the absence of essential data for the study in the medical records (absence of the number of oocytes obtained or the AMH value). Poor response to stimulation was defined as ≤ 3 oocytes retrieved, and high response was defined as > 15 oocytes. The correlation between variables was calculated using Spearman's correlation test and cut-off values were determined using ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) curves. RESULTS: AMH exhibited a significantly positive correlation with the number of oocytes retrieved (Spearman's correlation coefficient = 0.60, p<0.01). The predictive cut-off for poor ovarian response was 0.72 ng/mL (specificity of 95.13%, sensitivity of 43.23%), and the predictive cut-off for high ovarian response was 4.77 ng/mL (specificity of 89.86%, sensitivity of 38.22%). CONCLUSIONS: Serum AMH proved to be a good predictor of the ovarian response to controlled ovarian stimulation for in vitro fertilization treatments, which makes it useful in supporting clinical decision-making. However, it should not be used as an absolute discriminator of poor or high ovarian response.

ABSTRACT

The rising demand for vegetables has driven the adoption of greenhouse cultivation to guarantee high yields and quality of fresh produce year-round. Consequently, this elevates the demand for fertilizers, whose costs are progressively escalating. Bacillus safensis RGM 2450 and Bacillus siamensis RGM 2529 are plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). The combination of these strains exhibited synergistic activity in stimulating the growth and seedling hydration of tomatoes. In this study, the effects of inoculation with a RGM 2450 plus RGM 2529 formulation were evaluated under 66% and 100% fertilization programs in tomato crops under greenhouse conditions. Fertilization programs (66% and 100%) with or without commercial biostimulants were used as control treatments. In this assay, the NPK percentage in the plant tissue, tomato average weight, tomato average weight per harvest, tomato diameter, and changes in the colonization, structure, and diversity of the bacterial rhizosphere were measured. The 100% and 66% fertilization programs supplemented with the RGM 2529 plus RGM 2450 formulation increased the average weight of tomatoes per harvest without statistical difference between them, but with the other treatments. The 66% fertilization with RGM 2450 plus RGM 2529 increased between 1.5 and 2.0 times the average weight of tomatoes per harvest compared to the 66% and 100% fertilizations with and without commercial biostimulant treatments, respectively. This study represents the first report demonstrating that the application of a formulation based on a mixture of B. siamensis and B. safensis in a fertilization program reduced by 33% is equivalent in productivity to a conventional fertilization program for tomato cultivation, achieving an increase in potential plant growth-promoting rizobacteria of the genus Flavobacterium. Therefore, the adoption of a combination of these bacterial strains within the framework of a 66% inorganic fertilization program is a sustainable approach to achieving greater tomato production and reducing the environmental risks associated with the use of inorganic fertilization.

To restore invaded areas, planting fast-growing native species such as Senegalia polyphylla (DC.) Britton & Rose (Fabaceae) is widely used. However, invasive grasses reduce light availability, alter fire regimes, and compete for water and nutrients, hindering the growth of native trees. Fertilization practices influence the competition dynamics between natives and invasives by altering soil fertility. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of mineral and organic fertilization on the nutritional status and growth of S. polyphylla cultivated during the first 120 days after transplanting. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design comprising five treatments and four replications, along with the unfertilized control (0-0%) as an additional treatment. Dystrophic red latosol and different proportions of mineral and organic fertilizers were used. The variables evaluated included dry mass of aboveground parts and roots, nutrient content in leaves, and nutrient use efficiency. The results showed that fertilizations with high nutrient concentrations (100-0% and 75-25%) resulted in greater accumulation of N, P, and K in the leaves, while balanced fertilization (50-50% and 25-75%) led to greater root dry mass. These results emphasize the importance of strategically choosing fertilizer formulations to promote the healthy development of seedlings in areas subject to interference from invasive grasses.

Phosphate fertilizers are applied to the soil surface, especially in vineyards in production in subtropical regions. Nowadays, phosphorus (P) is not incorporated into the soil to avoid mechanical damage to the root system in orchards. However, over the years, successive surface P applications can increase the P content only in the topsoil, maintaining low P levels in the subsurface, which can reduce its use by grapevines. For this reason, there is a need to propose strategies to increase the P content in the soil profile of established orchards. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of management strategies to (i) increase the P content in the soil profile; (ii) enhance the grape production; and (iii) maintain the grape must composition. An experiment on the 'Pinot Noir' grape in full production was carried out over three crop seasons. The treatments were without P application (C), P on the soil surface without incorporation (SP), P incorporated at 20 cm (IP20), P incorporated at 40 cm (IP40), and twice the P dose incorporated at 40 cm (2IP40). The P concentration in leaves at flowering and veraison, P content in the soil, grape production and its components, and chemical parameters of the grape must (total soluble solids, total polyphenols, total titratable acidity, total anthocyanins, and pH) were evaluated. The P concentration in leaves did not differ among the P application modes. The application of P associated with soil mobilization, especially at 20 cm depth, increased grape production. The P application modes did not affect the values of the chemical parameters of the grape must except for the total anthocyanins, which had the highest values when the vines were subjected to 2IP40. Finally, the P application and incorporation into the soil profile was an efficient strategy for increasing the grape production in full production vineyards.

After ejaculation, mammalian sperm undergo a series of molecular events conducive to the acquisition of fertilizing competence. These events are collectively known as capacitation and involve acrosomal responsiveness and a vigorous sperm motility called hyperactivation. When mimicked in the laboratory, capacitating bovine sperm medium contains bicarbonate, calcium, albumin and heparin, among other components. In this study, we aimed at establishing a new capacitation protocol for bovine sperm, using calcium ionophore. Similar to our findings using mouse sperm, bovine sperm treated with Ca2+ ionophore A23187 were quickly immobilized. However, these sperm initiated capacitation after ionophore removal in fresh medium without heparin, and independent of the Protein Kinase A. When A23187-treated sperm were used on in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures without heparin, eggs showed cleavage rates similar to standardized IVF protocols using heparin containg synthetic oviduct fluid (IVF-SOF). However, when A23187 pre-treated sperm were further used for inseminating eggs in complete IVF-SOF-heparin, a significantly higher percentage of embryo development was observed, suggesting a synergism between two different signaling pathways during bovine sperm capacitation. These results have the potential to improve current protocols for bovine IVF that could also be applied in other species of commercial interest.

ABSTRACT

Studies investigating physiological deviations from normality in newborn calves derived from in vitro fertilization procedures remain important for the understanding of factors that reduce calf survival after birth. The aim of this study was to investigate parameters affecting health and welfare of newborn Flemish calves derived from in vitro embryo production (IVP) in the first hours of life in comparison to in vivo-derived calves. Physical traits of newborn calves and fetal membranes (FM) were recorded soon after birth. Newborn venous blood samples were collected at several time points within the first 24 h of life for analyses of energy substrates, electrolytes, blood gases, acid-base balance, blood chemistry, and haematology. A liver biopsy was taken within the first hour after birth for analysis of gene expression of key enzymes of the fructolytic and glycolytic pathways. Newborn IVP calves were heavier and larger at birth, which was associated with heavier FM. At several time points during the first 24 h of life, IVP-derived calves had altered rectal temperature, blood gases, electrolyte concentrations, blood parameters for liver, kidney and muscle function, and acid-base balance, plasma lipid metabolism, and hemogram parameters. The relative mRNA abundances for triokinase and lactate dehydrogenase-B were greater in IVP calves. In summary, IVP-derived newborn calves were at higher risk of clinical problems after birth, which was markedly greater in heavier and larger calves. Such animals take longer to adapt to extrauterine life and should receive a special attention during the immediate neonatal period.

Various studies have emphasized the importance of identifying the optimal Trigger Timing (TT) for the trigger shot in In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), which is crucial for the successful maturation and release of oocytes, especially in minimal ovarian stimulation treatments. Despite its significance for the ultimate success of IVF, determining the precise TT remains a complex challenge for physicians due to the involvement of multiple variables. This study aims to enhance TT by developing a machine learning multi-output model that predicts the expected number of retrieved oocytes, mature oocytes (MII), fertilized oocytes (2 PN), and useable blastocysts within a 48-h window after the trigger shot in minimal stimulation cycles. By utilizing this model, physicians can identify patients with possible early, late, or on-time trigger shots. The study found that approximately 27 % of treatments administered the trigger shot on a suboptimal day, but optimizing the TT using the developed Artificial Intelligence (AI) model can potentially increase useable blastocyst production by 46 %. These findings highlight the potential of predictive models as a supplementary tool for optimizing trigger shot timing and improving IVF outcomes, particularly in minimal ovarian stimulation. The experimental results underwent statistical validation, demonstrating the accuracy and performance of the model. Overall, this study emphasizes the value of AI prediction models in enhancing TT and making the IVF process safer and more efficient.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland and it has antioxidant properties. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of melatonin on assisted reproductive technologies through a systematic review and a meta-analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Search strategies were used in PubMed and in other databases covering the last 15 years. After screening for eligibility, 17 articles were selected for the systematic review. For the meta-analysis statistics, two groups were formed, the treatment group (with melatonin) and the control group (without melatonin) for various assisted reproduction outcomes. RESULTS: The main results were that no statistical differences were found concerning the clinical pregnancy outcome (p = 0.64), but there was a statistical difference with respect to Mature Oocytes (MII) (p = 0.001), antral follicle count (p = 0.0002), and the fertilization rate (p ≤ 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Melatonin had beneficial effects such as the improvement in the fertilization rate, although the authors did not obtain significance in the clinical pregnancy rate.

ABSTRACT

Sodium (Na+) is a beneficial element for most plants and may replace potassium (K+) in osmoregulatory process to a certain extent, increasing plant water use efficiency. Thus, understanding coordinated mechanisms underlying the combined use of K+ and Na+ in tree drought tolerance is a key challenge for forestry in dealing with productivity and water limitations. A pot experiment with three ratios of K/Na (K-supplied, partial K replacement by Na, and K-deficient plants) and two water regimes, well-watered (W+) and water-stressed (W-), was conducted on saplings of two Eucalyptus species with contrasting drought sensitivities. We evaluated the point of stomatal closure (Pgs90), xylem water potential at 12, 50, and 88% embolized xylem area (P12, P50, P88), hydraulic safety margin, leaf gas exchange (A, E, gs, and dark respiration), pre-dawn and midday leaf water potential (ΨPD and ΨMD), long-term water use efficiency (WUEL) and total dry mass. Partial K replacement by Na increased leaf gas exchange, WUEL, and total dry mass, while Pgs90, P12, P50, P88, and ΨMD decreased (were more negative), compared with plants exclusively supplied with K and K-deficient plants of both species. Fertilized plants had narrower hydraulic safety margins than K-deficient plants, indicating that these Eucalyptus species adopt the functional adaptive strategy of operating close to their hydraulic limits to maximize carbon uptake while increasing the risk of hydraulic failure under drought stress.

ABSTRACT

The advances in Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ARTs) applied in South American camelid species are still scarce. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of three semen extenders, before and after the cryopreservation of spermatozoa obtained from the vas deferens, on sperm quality parameters and in vitro fertilization rates of llama (Lama glama) oocytes. Mature fertile llama males (Lama glama; n = 6; age: 48-60 mo.; BCS: ~2.7) were included in the study. Sperm samples were collected from each male using the surgical technique of the vas deferens deviation. Then, the sperm samples were pooled and diluted with the Tris-EY, Andromed®, or BioxCell® extender in order to subsequently carry out the sperm cryopreservation process. The sperm quality assessment related to each extender was performed before and after cryopreservation with regard to sperm morphological abnormalities, acrosome integrity, sperm viability, membrane permeability, and sperm motility traits. Moreover, in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures were carried out to evaluate the in vitro fertility of the cryopreserved sperm samples using each extender. Overall, significant differences were observed before and after cryopreservation regarding acrosome integrity, sperm viability, membrane permeability, and sperm motility traits among the extenders used, where Tris-EY and Andromed® were better than BioxCell® (p < 0.05); however, no differences were observed regarding the sperm morphological abnormalities among extenders (p > 0.05). Moreover, multiple differences were observed with regard to the velocity and linearity kinematic parameters obtained by computerized analysis before and after the cryopreservation process, irrespective of the extender used (p < 0.05). Finally, differences were observed regarding the in vitro fertilization rates among the different extender-derived samples (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the sperm quality using Tris-EY and Andromed® was better before and after cryopreservation compared to that using BioxCell®. Although the number of fertilized oocytes obtained after the IVF process between Tris-EY and Andromed® was similar, Andromed®-derived samples showed the best sperm quality results before and after cryopreservation. This indicates that the cryopreservation extender is a determining factor in significantly improving in vitro fertilization rates when using sperm samples obtained from vas deferens in llama (Lama glama) males.

ABSTRACT

To acquire the ability to fertilize the egg, mammalian spermatozoa must undergo a series of changes occurring within the highly synchronized and specialized environment of the female reproductive tract, collectively known as capacitation. In an attempt to replicate this process in vitro, various culture media for mouse sperm were formulated over the past decades, sharing a similar overall composition but differing mainly in ion concentrations and metabolic substrates. The widespread use of the different media to study the mechanisms of capacitation might hinder a comprehensive understanding of this process, as the medium could become a confounding variable in the analysis. In this context, the present side-by-side study compares the influence of four commonly used culture media (FD, HTF and two TYH versions) on mouse sperm capacitation. We evaluated the induction of protein kinase A phosphorylation pathway, motility, hyperactivation and acrosome reaction. Additionally, in vitro fertilization and embryo development were also assessed. By analyzing these outcomes in two mouse colonies with different reproductive performance, our study provides critical insights to improve the global understanding of sperm function. The results obtained highlight the importance of considering variations in medium composition, and their potential implications for the future interpretation of results.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether blastocysts transferred on day 5 or day 6 of embryo development, as well as positivity for anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies, affect gestational outcomes in euthyroid women undergoing in vitro fertilisation. METHODS: Of 428 women who underwent in vitro fertilisation assessed in this retrospective cohort study, 212 (49.5%) underwent embryo transfer on day 5 of blastulation and 216 (50.5%) on day 6. Dichotomization based on anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies status was also performed, with 370 (86.4%) women testing negative and 58 (13.6%) testing positive. Clinical and hormonal data and rates of clinical pregnancy, miscarriage, and live births were compared between the groups. RESULTS: When evaluating gestational outcomes based on the day of blastulation, a statistically significant difference was observed in clinical pregnancy rates [51.4% (day 5) vs. 40.7% (day 6); p=0.033]. However, there was no significant difference in the relative frequencies of miscarriages (p=1.000), live births (p=1.000), or preterm births (p=1.000). Using Cramer's V test, a weak association was found between the day of blastulation and clinical pregnancy outcomes (V2=10.7%; p=0.027). There were no statistically significant differences between the anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies-negative and -positive groups in terms of clinical pregnancy rates (p=0.396), miscarriages (p=0.129), and live births (p=0.129). CONCLUSIONS: Higher rates of clinical pregnancy were observed in women who underwent embryo transfers performed on day 5 compared to those on day 6. However, no effect was observed with gestational outcomes. Further, anti-thyroid peroxidase antibody positivity did not have a statistically significant impact on gestational outcomes.

Dynamic mutations in the 5' untranslated region of FMR1 are associated with infertility. Premutation alleles interfere with prenatal development and increase infertility risks. The number of CGG repeats that causes the highest decrease in ovarian reserves remains unclear. We evaluated the effect of FMR1 CGG repeat lengths on ovarian reserves and in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment outcomes in 272 women with alleles within the normal range. FMR1 CGG repeat length was investigated via PCR and capillary electrophoresis. Alleles were classified as low-normal, normal, and high-normal. Serum levels of follicle-stimulating hormone and anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) in the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle were measured, and antral follicles (AFC) were counted. IVF outcomes were collected from medical records. Regarding FMR1 CGG repeat length alleles, 63.2% of women presented at least one low-normal allele. Those carrying low-normal alleles had significantly lower AMH levels than women carrying normal or high-normal alleles. Low-normal/low-normal genotype was the most frequent, followed by low-normal/normal and normal/normal. A comparison of ovarian reserve markers and reproductive outcomes of the three most frequent genotypes revealed that AFC in the low-normal/normal genotype was significantly lower than the low-normal/low-normal genotype. The low number of FMR1 CGG repeats affected AMH levels and AFC but not IVF outcomes per cycle of treatment.

ABSTRACT

Corn (Zea mays) silage is an important and popular feed for dairy production in the Amazon region, so it is necessary to evaluate the agronomic performance of forage varieties of corn for cattle feeding in Amazonas. For this purpose, three corn varieties were evaluated (variety 1: Yellow Starchy Corn, variety 2: Chuska INIA 617, and variety 3: DOW 2B710), with two planting densities (density 1: 30 × 80 cm and density 2: 35 × 75 cm) and two fertilization conditions: with fertilization (F1) and without fertilization (F2). The parameters evaluated were plant height, number of leaves, leaf length and width, stem diameter, fresh forage, and dry matter. Student t-tests, correlation analysis of variables, and principal component analysis using R software version 4.1.3 were used for data analysis. The results indicated that variety 2 obtained the best values for the variables leaf width (12.33 cm) and stem diameter (3.25 cm), fresh forage (17.77 kg/m2), and dry matter (4.8 kg/m2), which would explain the directly proportional correlation found between leaf width and stem diameter with fresh forage and dry matter. The principal component analysis showed constant height and leaf length increases, and the best-evaluated parameters were associated with applying fertilizer. The variety that showed the best agronomic performance under Chachapoyas conditions was Chuska INIA 617, emerging as a potential feed for cattle.

The frequency of early frosts has increased in recent years, which are injurious to olive growing, causing losses in the yield and quality of virgin olive oil. In this research, it was studied how the management of agronomic factors mitigates frost damage in Arbequina olives, minimizing the loss of phenols and volatiles in virgin olive oil, at different fruit ripening stages. A Box-Behnken design and multivariate analysis were performed, with three levels of irrigation, potassium fertilization, and foliar copper application (15 treatments). Virgin olive oil was extracted from fresh and frozen olives. Light frost caused a significant decrease in the total phenols and secoiridoid compounds in and the antioxidant capacity of the frost-affected oils, which were perceived as more pungent and had the slight defect of "frostbitten olives". According to the Box-Behnken design, an 86% reference evapotranspiration (ET0) or higher with 100 potassium oxide units (UK2O) and a 100% ET0 or higher with 250 UK2O would be required to minimize the effect of light frost on phenols and volatiles. Partial Least Squares Regression-Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) differentiated the virgin olive oils according to their ripening stage and fresh and frost conditions. Moreover, PLS-DA positively correlated a 75-100% ET0 and 0 Uk2O with the dialdehydic form of the decarboxymethyl ligstroside aglycone (p-HPEA-EDA), the dialdehydic form of the decarboxymethyl oleuropein aglycone (3,4-DHPEA-EDA), the dialdehydic form of the ligstroside aglycone (p-HPEA-EDA-DLA), and with fruity, pungent, and bitter attributes. Precision agronomic management based on the needs of the crop itself would avoid unnecessary stress on olive trees and oil damage.
