ABSTRACT

Objective: it aimed to explore the value of multislice helical computed tomography (MSCT) in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of primary tracheal tumors. Methods: 64 patients with the primary tracheal tumor who were diagnosed in Wuxi Second People's Hospital from March 2020 to March 2021 were selected as the research objects. MSCT imaging was performed on all patients, and suitable surgical methods. The pathological results were compared with original CT, CT virtual endoscopy (CTVE), and Comparisons were made using CT three-dimensional reconstruction images to evaluate the accuracy of MSCT diagnosis. Parameters such as postoperative complications and survival rates were observed to assess surgical effectiveness and safety. Results: Compared with original CT images (70%, 72%, 70%), the diagnostic accuracy of VR images (80%, 80%, 80%), MPVR images (85%, 90%, 92%), and CTVE images (100%, 100%, 100%) was remarkably improved (P<0.05). The three-year survival rate of patients with smooth muscle tumors, malignant tumors, salivary gland adenoma, papillary tumors, and inflammatory polyp was markedly lower than that of the one-year survival rate, with a significant difference (P<0.05). The incidence of postoperative complications was 14.1%, with three cases resulting in complication-related deaths. Conclusion: the diagnostic accuracy of MSCT imaging of primary tracheal tumor was high. The diagnostic accuracy of CTVE was higher than that of VR and MPVR. Besides, surgical treatment of primary tracheal tumor had a substantial effect, with no serious postoperative complications.

ABSTRACT

Corneal neovascularization (CoNV) is a vision-threatening ocular disease commonly secondary to infectious, inflammatory, and traumatic etiologies. Slit lamp photography, in vivo confocal microscopy, angiography, and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) are the primary diagnostic tools utilized in clinical practice to evaluate the vasculature of the ocular surface. However, there is currently a dearth of comprehensive literature that reviews the advancements in imaging technology for CoNV administration. Initially designed for retinal vascular imaging, OCTA has now been expanded to the anterior segment and has shown promising potential for imaging the conjunctiva, cornea, and iris. This expansion allows for the quantitative monitoring of the structural and functional changes associated with CoNV. In this review, we emphasize the impact of algorithm optimization in anterior segment-optical coherence tomography angiography (AS-OCTA) on the diagnostic efficacy of CoNV. Through the analysis of existing literature, animal model assessments are further reported to investigate its pathological mechanism and exhibit remarkable therapeutic interventions. In conclusion, AS-OCTA holds broad prospects and extensive potential for clinical diagnostics and research applications in CoNV.

ABSTRACT

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare multifocal peritoneal sarcoma, typically found in adolescent and young adult males. Symptoms are nonspecific and vary depending on tumor involvement. Diagnosis is primarily histopathological, although imaging results can assist in the diagnostic process. Although not pathognomonic, certain radiologic findings can help narrow down potential diagnoses and sometimes suggest the condition, as seen in our cases. Treatment options are not well-established or effective, and despite employing various therapeutic approaches, the prognosis remains poor. We present two cases of boys aged 11 and 10 with a final diagnosis of DSRCT, emphasizing the imaging findings.

ABSTRACT

Vertebral limbus is a condition characterized by the intraspongious herniation of a portion of the nucleus pulposus. It is often asymptomatic, but it can sometimes cause nonspecific symptoms such as local pain and muscle spasm, or, in rare cases, radiculopathies, which is why it can be confused with vertebral fractures, spondyloarthropathies, infectious or tumoral processes. Early recognition of this pathology is preferable for a correct diagnosis and adequate treatment, the latter ranging from conservative approaches (such as personalized exercise programs and physical therapy) to surgical interventions reserved for severe cases with nerve compression.

ABSTRACT

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) is a rare low-grade malignant vascular tumor. It mainly occurs in the liver, lungs, bones, and other parts of the body. Reports of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma in the parotid gland are rare in both domestic and international literature. Here, we present a case report of a parotid gland epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, including its complete clinical course and imaging findings, to improve the diagnosis and treatment of this unusual disease. Case presentation: The patient, a 75-year-old female, presented with a swelling around the right ear for 2 months and pain for 20 days. Enhanced MRI of the parotid gland revealed a well-defined, round mass with homogeneous signal intensity. The mass showed low signal intensity on T1-weighted imaging, high signal intensity on T2-weighted imaging, nodular low signal intensity within, significant high signal intensity on DWI sequence, low signal intensity on ADC sequence, and heterogeneous enhancement in the arterial phase after intravenous injection of Gd-DTPA. Nodular non-enhancing low signal intensity was observed internally, and slight clearance was seen in the venous phase. The initial diagnosis before surgery was a benign lesion, but after histopathological and immunohistochemical examination, it was confirmed as epithelioid hemangioendothelioma. Intervention: Complete tumor resection was performed. Results: The patient experienced a favorable recovery, with meticulous follow-up conducted for up to 1 year revealing no signs of recurrence or metastasis. Continued patient surveillance is ongoing to substantiate and validate the long-term efficacy of the treatment. Conclusion: Due to the extreme rarity of parotid gland epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, it often leads to a high misdiagnosis rate. The most common misdiagnosis is salivary gland lymphoma, followed by epithelioid hemangiosarcoma. When the lesion is multifocal, fusiform, with internal necrosis, and shows punctate low signal intensity on T2-weighted imaging, significant enhancement in the arterial phase, particularly with more pronounced peripheral enhancement, and persistent enhancement in the venous and delayed phases, epithelioid hemangioendothelioma should be considered. However, the current clinical diagnosis of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma still primarily relies on immunohistochemical methods.

ABSTRACT

Clonorchis sinensis infections persist globally among humans. These pathogens mainly inhabit the intrahepatic biliary system. Most individuals with clonorchiasis exhibit mild symptoms. The absence of distinctive symptoms often results in delayed diagnosis and treatment, potentially leading to chronic infection. We herein report a case of a 29-year-old female presented with a year-long history of abdominal distention and dyspepsia. Imaging revealed intrahepatic bile duct dilatation, intrahepatic bile duct cyst, and associated deposits. One month post-cystectomy, the patient developed massive ascites and a significant increase in eosinophil count. After treatment, multiple worms were observed in the drainage tube. Morphological and DNA metagenomic analyses confirmed the presence of C. sinensis. Clinical manifestations of C. sinensis vary widely. Imaging serves as a valuable diagnostic tool in endemic areas, especially in detecting intrahepatic duct dilation where the flukes reside. In addition to intrahepatic bile duct dilation, abnormal echoes within the bile duct and the presence of floating objects in the gallbladder significantly aid in diagnosis. Clinicians may encounter these parasitic diseases unexpectedly, underscoring the importance of understating such cases in routine practice and contributing to our broader understanding of managing similar cases in clinical settings.

ABSTRACT

Pneumoconiosis ranks first among the newly-emerged occupational diseases reported annually in China, and imaging diagnosis is still one of the main clinical diagnostic methods. However, manual reading of films requires high level of doctors, and it is difficult to discriminate the staged diagnosis of pneumoconiosis imaging, and due to the influence of uneven distribution of medical resources and other factors, it is easy to lead to misdiagnosis and omission of diagnosis in primary healthcare institutions. Computer-aided diagnosis system can realize rapid screening of pneumoconiosis in order to assist clinicians in identification and diagnosis, and improve diagnostic efficacy. As an important branch of deep learning, convolutional neural network (CNN) is good at dealing with various visual tasks such as image segmentation, image classification, target detection and so on because of its characteristics of local association and weight sharing, and has been widely used in the field of computer-aided diagnosis of pneumoconiosis in recent years. This paper was categorized into three parts according to the main applications of CNNs (VGG, U-Net, ResNet, DenseNet, CheXNet, Inception-V3, and ShuffleNet) in the imaging diagnosis of pneumoconiosis, including CNNs in pneumoconiosis screening diagnosis, CNNs in staging diagnosis of pneumoconiosis, and CNNs in segmentation of pneumoconiosis foci to conduct a literature review. It aims to summarize the methods, advantages and disadvantages, and optimization ideas of CNN applied to the images of pneumoconiosis, and to provide a reference for the research direction of further development of computer-aided diagnosis of pneumoconiosis.

ABSTRACT

As bacterial keratitis progresses rapidly, prompt intervention is necessary. Current diagnostic processes are time-consuming and invasive, leading to improper antibiotics for treatment. Therefore, innovative strategies for diagnosing and treating bacterial keratitis are urgently needed. In this study, Cu2-xSe@BSA@NTRP nanoparticles were developed by loading nitroreductase-responsive probes (NTRPs) onto Cu2-xSe@BSA. These nanoparticles exhibited integrated fluorescence imaging and antibacterial capabilities. In vitro and in vivo experiments showed that the nanoparticles produced responsive fluorescence signals in bacteria within 30 min due to an interaction between the released NTRP and bacterial endogenous nitroreductase (NTR). When combined with low-temperature photothermal therapy (PTT), the nanoparticles effectively eliminated E. coli and S. aureus, achieved antibacterial efficacy above 95% and facilitated the re-epithelialization process at the corneal wound site in vivo. Overall, the Cu2-xSe@BSA@NTRP nanoparticles demonstrated potential for rapid, noninvasive in situ diagnosis, treatment, and visualization assessment of therapy effectiveness in bacterial keratitis.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study aims to review the application of deep learning techniques in the imaging diagnosis and treatment of aortic aneurysm (AA), focusing on screening, diagnosis, lesion segmentation, surgical assistance, and prognosis prediction. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted, analyzing studies that utilized deep learning models such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in various aspects of AA management. The review covered applications in screening, segmentation, surgical planning, and prognosis prediction, with a focus on how these models improve diagnosis and treatment outcomes. Results: Deep learning models demonstrated significant advancements in AA management. For screening and diagnosis, models like ResNet achieved high accuracy in identifying AA in non-contrast CT scans. In segmentation, techniques like U-Net provided precise measurements of aneurysm size and volume, crucial for surgical planning. Deep learning also assisted in surgical procedures by accurately predicting stent placement and postoperative complications. Furthermore, models were able to predict AA progression and patient prognosis with high accuracy. Conclusion: Deep learning technologies show remarkable potential in enhancing the diagnosis, treatment, and management of AA. These advancements could lead to more accurate and personalized patient care, improving outcomes in AA management.

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of three imaging tests: X-ray, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), for subtle Lisfranc injuries and three anatomical subtype injuries. The non-weight-bearing X-ray, CT and MRI imaging results of patients with subtle Lisfranc injuries from September 2013 to March 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. Subtle Lisfranc injuries and three anatomical subtypes (first, second and cuneiform rays) were diagnosed based on the surgical reports. The diagnostic performance of X-ray, CT and MRI was compared. The sensitivity (Sn), specificity (Sp), positive predictive value, negative predictive value, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and κ coefficient were reported. A total of 31 patients were included in the study. The correct diagnosis was made in 48.4% (15/31), 87.1% (27/31) and 96.8% (30/31) of patients by X-ray, CT and MRI, respectively. A total of 54 different anatomical injuries were found intraoperatively in all patients, with MRI and CT having high agreement (Sn, 72.2 and 87.0%; κ, 0.69 and 0.78, respectively) and X-ray having a low agreement (Sn, 29.6%; κ, 0.26) with the surgical findings. Regarding the first-ray injuries, CT had the highest Sn (76.9%), Sp (100%) and AUC (0.885) in diagnosing subtle Lisfranc injuries. MRI showed the best Sn (88.5 and 93.3%, respectively) and AUC (0.942 and 0.904, respectively) in both second and cuneiform rays. In conclusion, non-weight-bearing X-rays had poor diagnostic accuracy for subtle Lisfranc injuries and their subtypes. CT was superior to X-rays and MRI in diagnosing first-ray injuries. Although not significantly different from CT in terms of overall diagnosis, MRI was superior to X-ray and CT in diagnosing second and cuneiform-ray injuries.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Appendiculocolonic fistulas, often arising from benign conditions like abscess-forming appendicitis, manifest subtly. This case emphasizes their rarity, intraoperative discovery during acute appendicitis, and explores diagnostic intricacies, sensitive imaging, and distinctions in managing benign versus malignant cases. CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old intellectually disabled patient, lacking regular medical follow-up and surgical history, presented to our emergency department with persistent right iliac fossa pain six months ago. Due to financial constraints, a CT scan was not performed despite an inflammatory syndrome, and the patient left against medical advice. Currently experiencing the same symptoms, investigations led to the diagnosis of acute appendicitis with a probable appendico-sigmoid fistula. Surgical exploration confirmed the appendico-sigmoid fistula and the presence of an uncomplicated Meckel's diverticulum. A conservative approach, including appendectomy, Meckel's diverticulum resection, and sigmoid fistula suturing, yielded favorable results. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: Appendiculocolonic fistulas often arise from acute or chronic appendicitis with local abscess formation. Our case highlights the unusual progression of untreated acute appendicitis, evolving into an appendico-sigmoid fistula. While generally benign, documented cases of malignant causes, such as appendiceal cancer, exist. Diagnosis is intricate, requiring diverse methods, with abdominal CT as a sensitive imaging tool. Conservative approaches are generally recommended for benign cases. CONCLUSION: Appendiculocolonic fistulas, though rare, pose a clinical challenge due to their elusive symptoms. Primarily associated with benign conditions, notably abscess-forming appendicitis, or, as in our case, untreated acute appendicitis. This case underscores the role of abdominal CT in precise diagnosis, guiding treatment decisions based on the lesion's nature.

This study aimed to evaluate radiographic and sonographic features, and histogram parameters based on grayscale ultrasound of the liver and spleen in healthy toco toucans. Fifteen adult toco toucans (Ramphastos toco), seven females and eight males, weighing approximately 650 g, were enrolled in the study. On the right lateral radiographic view, the liver was visualized in the midventral region of the coelomic cavity; ultrasonographically, the liver was located in the middle portion of the coelomic cavity in close relationship to the heart, and thoracic and abdominal air sacs. Two hepatic lobes were identified; the right lobe was larger than the left one. The spleen was visualized in 10 toco toucans on radiographs and only in eight toucans on ultrasound exams. The gallbladder was identified only on ultrasound. On the right lateral radiographic view, the spleen was visualized dorsal to the proventriculus and ventral to the lungs/air sacs as an oval shape. Ultrasonographically, the spleen was observed caudal to the liver, cranial to the proventriculus and craniodorsal to the ventriculus. There was no significant difference in spleen length for either radiographic or ultrasound measurements. The brightness intensity (BI) for mean gray level (G) and standard deviation of gray levels (SG ) in the liver were 101.315 (± 16.170) and 12.453 (± 2.616), respectively. Mean G and SG levels in the spleen were 63.940 (± 18.321) and 7.494 (± 3.595), respectively. In conclusion, the sonographic features and histogram parameters indicated that the liver is more echogenic and heterogeneous than the spleen, which must be considered for diagnosing alterations in these organs.

ABSTRACT

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the major infectious diseases in the world with a high incidence rate. Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) is a key and difficult challenge in the prevention and treatment of TB. Early, rapid, and accurate diagnosis of DR-TB is essential for selecting appropriate and personalized treatment and is an important means of reducing disease transmission and mortality. In recent years, imaging diagnosis of DR-TB has developed rapidly, but there is a lack of consistent understanding. To this end, the Infectious Disease Imaging Group, Infectious Disease Branch, Chinese Research Hospital Association; Infectious Diseases Group of Chinese Medical Association of Radiology; Digital Health Committee of China Association for the Promotion of Science and Technology Industrialization, and other organizations, formed a group of TB experts across China. The conglomerate then considered the Chinese and international diagnosis and treatment status of DR-TB, China's clinical practice, and evidence-based medicine on the methodological requirements of guidelines and standards. After repeated discussion, the expert consensus of imaging diagnosis of DR-PB was proposed. This consensus includes clinical diagnosis and classification of DR-TB, selection of etiology and imaging examination [mainly X-ray and computed tomography (CT)], imaging manifestations, diagnosis, and differential diagnosis. This expert consensus is expected to improve the understanding of the imaging changes of DR-TB, as a starting point for timely detection of suspected DR-TB patients, and can effectively improve the efficiency of clinical diagnosis and achieve the purpose of early diagnosis and treatment of DR-TB.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the morphologies and effect of the round window niche veil (RWNV) on local drug delivery efficacy and develop diagnostic criteria on high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT). METHODS: Patients diagnosed with otosclerosis, bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss or vestibular schwannoma were enrolled from 2019 to 2022, receiving temporal bone HRCT scanning, and anatomic variations of RWMV were summarized intraoperative. For patients with vestibular schwannoma, 1 mL of dexamethasone solution (4 mg/mL) was administered via facial recess during operation, and samples of perilymph were collected to analyze. The diagnostic criteria of RWNV on HRCT were developed and verified. RESULTS: A total of 85 patients were enrolled. RWNV was observed in 54 cases intraoperatively with an incidence of 63.5% (95% CI, 52.9%-73.0%). The median perilymph concentrations were 4.86-fold higher in the group without RWNV than with RWNV (p < 0.0001). RWNV could be visualized on HRCT with a window width of 3500-4500 HU and a window level of 300-500 HU. The characteristic features were as follows: (1) a thin soft tissue shadow could be seen at the entrance of the round window niche (RWN); (2) it was visible in at least 2 consecutive layers along the upper margin of RWN from top to bottom; (3) it was discontinuous with the adjacent bone margin. The sensitivity and specificity of the diagnostic criteria were 77.8% and 93.6%, respectively. CONCLUSION: RWNV could reduce local dexamethasone diffusion efficacy to the inner ear, which could be diagnosed on HRCT and used as a predictor of local drug delivery efficacy to the inner ear. This study aimed to evaluate the application of radiography, ultrasonography, and computed tomography (CT) as auxiliaries in the determination of body fat and musculature in crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous). Eight animals were evaluated and classified based on the body condition score (BCS) scale. The total cut volume, total visceral volume, total subcutaneous volume, visceral fat volume, subcutaneous fat volume, and total fat volume were measured. The correlation of the BCS with the other data was determined. In the ultrasound, there was a correlation of the vertebral epaxial musculature score (VEMS) with body weight, BCS, muscle mass score (MMS), animal's height, and height at the withers. In the radiographic analysis, the amount of subcutaneous fat obtained in L3 vertebrae did not present a significant correlation with BCS, as opposed to L6. In the tomographic analysis, TFV/L6, VFV/L6, and SFV/L6 correlated with BCS in L3, and only SFV /L6 in L6. When the ratios between fat volumes were correlated, the correlation with BCS occurred only in L6 in the TFV/TBV, SFV/SVC, and VFW variants. Radiography and CT were effective and had a good association with BCS. With the CT it was possible to demonstrate the distribution of total fat at the level of the L3 slice. The ratio of calculations considering the length of the L6 vertebra was more adequate, while at the level of L6 the ratio between the volumes of the compartments was more effective.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To longitudinally compare isolated structural parameters obtained using RTVue optical coherence tomography in patients with glaucoma and suspected glaucoma with stable visual fields. Methods: All patients were required to have a reliable SITA Standard 24-2 Humphrey Visual Field test. Visual field stability was defined as having <5 points with p<5% and/or having no points with p<1% and/or p<0.05% in the glaucoma progression analysis comparison graph. Furthermore, the glaucoma assessment strategy was used in optical coherence tomography. Results: The study included 75 eyes from 75 patients, 43 of which had glaucoma and 32 had suspected glaucoma. The mean visual field intervals were 29.57 ± 9.65 months between the first and third tests. No visual field parameter variations (mean deviation, pattern standard deviation, and visual field index) and no retinal nerve fiber layer or optic disk parameter variations between the first and third tests were observed (p>0.05 for all), and no retinal nerve fiber layer parameter variations throughout the study were observed, except for optic disk parameters presenting with cup volume changes (p=0.004). However, ganglion complex cells presented a progressively decreased average ganglion cell complex parameter, with a variability of -0.98% ± 3.71% (p=0.04) between the first and third tests. By contrast, the global loss volume progressively increased throughout the study, with a variability of 14.71% ± 44.52% (p=0.04) between the first and third tests. The inferior ganglion cell complex parameter was significantly decreased between the first and third tests (p=0.02). Conclusion: The present findings suggest that patients with glaucoma or suspected glaucoma with stable visual fields may present structural ganglion complex cell progression as assessed using RTVue optical coherence tomography.


RESUMO Objetivo: Comparar longitudinalmente os parâmetros estruturais isolados obtidos através da tomografia de coerência óptica RTVue em pacientes glaucomatosos e suspeitos de glaucoma com campos visuais estáveis. Métodos: Todos os incluídos deveriam ter Campimetria Computadorizada Humphrey Sita Standard 24-2 confiáveis. A estabilidade campimétrica foi definida se apresentassem menos de cinco pontos com p<5% e/ou nenhum ponto com p<1% e/ou p<0,05% no gráfico de comparação do Glaucoma Progression Analysis. Para a tomografia de coerência óptica, foi utilizado a estratégia de avaliação para glaucoma. Resultados: Foram incluídos 75 olhos de 75 pacientes: 43 com glaucoma e 32 suspeitos. A média dos intervalos do campo visual entre o 1o e 3o exame, foi de 29,57 ± 9,65 meses. Não houve variação para os parâmetros do campo visual (desvio médio, desvio padrão e índice da função visual) entre o primeiro e o último exame (p>0,05 para todos). Não houve variação dos parâmetros da camada de fibras nervosas da retina ao longo do estudo, enquanto que para os parâmetros do disco óptico, apenas cup volume apresentou mudança (p=0,004). Em relação à camada de células ganglionares da retina, notou-se uma redução progressiva na espessura média da Ganglionar Complex Cells com uma variabilidade entre o primeiro e último exame de -0,98 ± 3,71% (p=0,04). Quanto ao Global loss volume, houve um aumento progressivo ao longo do estudo com uma variabilidade entre o primeiro e último exame de 14,71 ± 44,52% (p=0,04). O parâmetro inferior do Ganglionar Complex Cells também reduziu significativamente entre o 1o e 3o exames (p=0,02). Os demais parâmetros da tomografia de coerência óptica RTVue se mantiveram estáveis entre o 1o e 3o exames. Conclusão: Os presentes achados sugerem que pacientes glaucomatosos ou com suspeita de glaucoma e com campos visuais estáveis, podem apresentar progressão estrutural na camada de células ganglionares da retina avaliada por meio da tomografia de coerência óptica RTVue.

ABSTRACT

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is defined as abnormal dilation of the infrarenal abdominal aortic diameter to 3.0 cm or greater. The natural history of AAA consists of progressive expansion and potential rupture. Although most AAAs are clinically silent, a pulsatile abdominal mass identified on physical examination may indicate the presence of an AAA. When an AAA is suspected, an imaging study is essential to confirm the diagnosis. This document reviews the relative appropriateness of various imaging procedures for the initial evaluation of suspected AAA. The American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria are evidence-based guidelines for specific clinical conditions that are reviewed annually by a multidisciplinary expert panel. The guideline development and revision process support the systematic analysis of the medical literature from peer reviewed journals. Established methodology principles such as Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation or GRADE are adapted to evaluate the evidence. The RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method User Manual provides the methodology to determine the appropriateness of imaging and treatment procedures for specific clinical scenarios. In those instances where peer reviewed literature is lacking or equivocal, experts may be the primary evidentiary source available to formulate a recommendation.

Fundamento: El carcinoma basocelular es infrecuente en la piel cabelluda. Es un tumor de invasión local y crecimiento lento, puede ser agresivo, destruir tejidos vecinos, causar ulceración e invadir en profundidad cartílago y hueso. Objetivo: Evaluar los resultados de la aplicación del HeberFERON y el seguimiento con ecografía cutánea en pacientes con carcinoma basocelular en la piel cabelluda. Metodología: Se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo y longitudinal en una serie de casos con diagnóstico de carcinoma basocelular de la piel cabelluda en el Policlínico Centro de la ciudad Sancti Spíritus, durante el período de 10 de julio del 2018 a 29 de julio del 2022. Se incluyeron 6 casos. Las variables estudiadas fueron la respuesta al tratamiento mediante la clínica, la ecografía cutánea e histopatología y presencia de eventos adversos. Resultados: Predominó el sexo masculino, subtipo histológico sólido, subtipo clínico nódulo ulcerativo, tamaño del tumor mayor de 30 mm y tiempo de evolución de más de 12 meses; la respuesta al tratamiento en la mayoría de los casos fue parcial. Los eventos adversos fueron dolor y ardor en el sitio de inyección, fiebre, edema y eritema perilesional. Conclusiones: El HeberFERON resultó de utilidad en los pacientes con carcinoma basocelular del cuero cabelludo ya que redujo el tumor en unos casos y en otros lo eliminó. La ecografía permitió la evaluación en tiempo real de la neoplasia; los eventos adversos más frecuentes fueron la fiebre y el dolor en el sitio de inyección, a pesar de ello ningún paciente abandonó el tratamiento.


Background: Basal cell carcinoma is uncommon in the scalp. It is a slow-growing locally invasive tumor, it can be aggressive in destroying neighboring tissues, cause ulceration and invade deep into the cartilage and bone. Objective: To evaluate the results of HeberFERON application and follow-up with cutaneous echographical in patients with scalp basal cell carcinoma. Methodology: An observational, descriptive and longitudinal study was conducted in a series of cases diagnosed with scalp basal cell carcinoma at the Center Polyclinic in Sancti Spíritus city during the period from July 10, 2018 to July 29, 2022. Six clinical cases were included. The studied variables were the answer to the treatment by clinical, cutaneous echographical and histopathology and the presence of adverse events. Results: Male sex predominated, solid histologic subtype, clinical subtype ulcerative nodule, tumor size greater than 30 mm and evolution time of over 12 months; the treatment response in most cases was partial; adverse events were pain and burning at the injection site, fever, edema and perilesional erythema. Conclusion: It was observed that in patients with scalp basal cell carcinoma, the HeberFERON treatment reduced in some cases and eliminated the tumor in others. Echography allowed real-time evaluation of the neoplasm, fever and pain at the injection site were the most frequent adverse events. In spite of this, none of the patients abandoned the therapy.

ABSTRACT

The staging of endometrial cancer is based on the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging system according to the examination of surgical specimens, and has revised in 2023, 14 years after its last revision in 2009. Molecular and histological classification has incorporated to new FIGO system reflecting the biological behavior and prognosis of endometrial cancer. Nonetheless, the basic role of imaging modalities including ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography, as a preoperative assessment of the tumor extension and also the evaluation points in CT and MRI imaging are not changed, other than several point of local tumor extension. In the field of radiology, it has also undergone remarkable advancement through the rapid progress of computational technology. The application of deep learning reconstruction techniques contributes the benefits of shorter acquisition time or higher quality. Radiomics, which extract various quantitative features from the images, is also expected to have the potential for the quantitative prediction of risk factors such as histological types and lymphovascular space invasion, which is newly included in the new FIGO system. This article reviews the preoperative imaging diagnosis in new FIGO system and recent advances in imaging analysis and their clinical contributions in endometrial cancer. ABSTRACT

Objective: To review the current applications of machine learning in orthopaedic trauma and anticipate its future role in clinical practice. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted to assess the status of machine learning algorithms in orthopaedic trauma research, both nationally and internationally. Results: The rapid advancement of computer data processing and the growing convergence of medicine and industry have led to the widespread utilization of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Currently, machine learning plays a significant role in orthopaedic trauma, demonstrating high performance and accuracy in various areas including fracture image recognition, diagnosis stratification, clinical decision-making, evaluation, perioperative considerations, and prognostic risk prediction. Nevertheless, challenges persist in the development and clinical implementation of machine learning. These include limited database samples, model interpretation difficulties, and universality and individualisation variations. Conclusion: The expansion of clinical sample sizes and enhancements in algorithm performance hold significant promise for the extensive application of machine learning in supporting orthopaedic trauma diagnosis, guiding decision-making, devising individualized medical strategies, and optimizing the allocation of clinical resources.
