ABSTRACT

The data presented in this article are an update of the dataset provided by Musazzi et al. [1] and are related to the research article entitled "Equivalence assessment of creams with quali-quantitative differences in light of the EMA and FDA regulatory framework" [2]. In vitro permeation study (IVPT) is typically conducted using the method of Franz's diffusion cell for assessing the biopharmaceutical performance of topically applied products. While the human epidermis is considered the benchmark, various animal models (for instance, pig ear) have been accepted as a permeation membrane. Nonetheless, it is crucial to evaluate the integrity of the membrane to ensure the quality of the experiments. The methods employed for this assessment vary, and the outcomes are heavily reliant on the operational conditions, and the model membrane. The article contributes to the existing dataset by providing data on the electrical resistance values of pig ear skin samples and their correlation with the in vitro permeability fluxes of caffeine and benzoic acid. This data is utilized to determine a suitable cut-off for verifying the skin integrity of such an animal model. This information could be beneficial for facilitating critical or comprehensive analyses, contributing to the creation of a standard method.

ABSTRACT

Procedural fidelity refers to the degree to which procedures for an assessment or intervention (i.e., independent variables) are implemented consistent with the prescribed protocols. Procedural fidelity is an important factor in demonstrating the internal validity of an experiment and clinical treatments. Previous reviews evaluating the inclusion of procedural fidelity in published empirical articles demonstrated underreporting of procedural fidelity procedures and measures within specific journals. We conducted a systematic review of The Analysis of Verbal Behavior (TAVB) to evaluate the trends in procedural fidelity reporting from 2007 to 2021. Of the 253 articles published in TAVB during the reporting period, 144 of the articles (168 studies) met inclusionary criteria for further analysis. Our results showed that 54% of studies reported procedural fidelity data, which is slightly higher than previous reviews. In comparison, interobserver-agreement data were reported for a high percentage of studies reviewed (i.e., 93%). Further discussion of results and applied research implications are included.

ABSTRACT

Cell cycle progression, autophagic cell death during appressorium development, and ROS degradation at the infection site are important for the development of rice blast disease. However, the association of cell cycle, autophagy and ROS detoxification remains largely unknown in M. oryzae. Here, we identify the dual-specificity kinase MoLKH1, which serves as an important cell cycle regulator required for appressorium formation by regulating cytokinesis and cytoskeleton in M. oryzae. MoLKH1 is transcriptionally activated by H2O2 and required for H2O2-induced autophagic cell death and suppression of ROS-activated plant defense during plant invasion of M. oryzae. In addition, the Molkh1 mutant also showed several phenotypic defects, including delayed growth, abnormal conidiation, damaged cell wall integrity, impaired glycogen and lipid transport, reduced secretion of extracellular enzymes and effectors, and attenuated virulence of M. oryzae. Nuclear localization of MoLKH1 requires the nuclear localization sequence, Lammer motif, as well as the kinase active site and ATP-binding site in this protein. Site-directed mutagenesis showed that each of them plays crucial roles in fungal growth and pathogenicity of M. oryzae. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that MoLKH1-mediated cell cycle, autophagy, and suppression of plant immunity play crucial roles in development and pathogenicity of M. oryzae.

ABSTRACT

Balance control is an important indicator of mobility and independence in activities of daily living. How the functional coupling between the cortex and the muscle for balance control is affected following stroke remains to be known. We investigated the changes in coupling between the cortex and leg muscles during a challenging balance task over multiple frequency bands in chronic stroke survivors. Fourteen participants with stroke and ten healthy controls performed a challenging balance task. They stood on a computerized support surface that was either fixed (low difficulty condition) or sway-referenced with varying gain (medium and high difficulty conditions). We computed corticomuscular coherence between electrodes placed over the sensorimotor area (electroencephalography) and leg muscles (electromyography) and assessed balance performance using clinical and laboratory-based tests. We found significantly lower delta frequency band coherence in stroke participants when compared with healthy controls under medium difficulty condition, but not during low and high difficulty conditions. These differences were found for most of the distal but not for proximal leg muscle groups. No differences were found at other frequency bands. Participants with stroke showed poor balance clinical scores when compared with healthy controls, but no differences were found for laboratory-based tests. The observation of effects at distal but not at proximal muscle groups suggests differences in the (re)organization of the descending connections across two muscle groups for balance control. We argue that the observed group difference in delta band coherence indicates balance context-dependent alteration in mechanisms for the detection of somatosensory modulation resulting from sway-referencing of the support surface for balance maintenance following stroke.

ABSTRACT

Ensuring high levels of procedural fidelity during behavior-analytic interventions is a crucial component of providing effective behavior-analytic services. However, few resources are available to help guide practitioners through measuring procedural fidelity. In fact, most published behavior-analytic research on procedural fidelity analyzes a single treatment procedure, which might not completely reflect the process of monitoring and addressing the procedural fidelity of a robust treatment package that might be necessary in clinical settings. The purpose of this article is to guide behavior analysts through the process of creating and using procedural fidelity measurement systems, with a focus on direct observation of implementation as a means of fidelity data collection. This process consists of six steps: (1) task analyze treatment procedures into measurable units; (2) assign measures to each treatment component; (3) plan the direct observation; (4) collect procedural fidelity data; (5) analyze and interpret procedural fidelity data; and (6) take action to improve procedural fidelity. Each step is described and discussed in the article.

Introduction: Post-ovulatory aging is a time-dependent deterioration of ovulated oocytes and a major limiting factor reducing the fitness of offspring. This process may lead to the activation of cell death pathways like apoptosis in oocytes. Methodology: We evaluated oocyte membrane integrity, egg developmental competency, and mRNA abundance of apoptosis-related genes by RT-qPCR. Oocytes from zebrafish Danio rerio were retained in vivo at 28.5°C for 24 h post-ovulation (HPO). Viability was assessed using trypan blue (TB) staining. The consequences of in vivo oocyte aging on the developmental competence of progeny were determined by the embryo survival at 24 h post fertilization, hatching, and larval malformation rates. Results: The fertilization, oocyte viability, and hatching rates were 91, 97, and 65% at 0 HPO and dropped to 62, 90, and 22% at 4 HPO, respectively. The fertilizing ability was reduced to 2% at 8 HPO, while 72% of oocytes had still intact plasma membranes. Among the apoptotic genes bcl-2 (b-cell lymphoma 2), bada (bcl2-associated agonist of cell death a), cathepsin D, cathepsin Z, caspase 6a, caspase 7, caspase 8, caspase 9, apaf1, tp53 (tumor protein p53), cdk1 (cyclin-dependent kinase 1) studied, mRNA abundance of anti-apoptotic bcl-2 decreased and pro-apoptotic cathepsin D increased at 24 HPO. Furthermore, tp53 and cdk1 mRNA transcripts decreased at 24 HPO compared to 0 HPO. Discussion: Thus, TB staining did not detect the loss of oocyte competency if caused by aging. TB staining, however, could be used as a simple and rapid method to evaluate the quality of zebrafish oocytes before fertilization. Taken together, our results indicate the activation of cell death pathways in the advanced stages of oocyte aging in zebrafish.

ABSTRACT

At the moment, the academic world is faced with various challenges that negatively impact science integrity. One is hijacked journals, a second, inauthentic website for indexed legitimate journals, managed by cybercriminals. These journals publish any manuscript by charging authors and pose a risk to scientific integrity. This piece compares a journal's original and hijacked versions regarding authority in search engines. A list of 16 medical journals, along with their hijacked versions, has been collected. The MOZ Domain Authority has been used to check the authority of both original and hijacked journals, and the results have been discussed. It indicates that hijacked journals are gaining more credibility than original ones. This should alarm academia and highlights a need for serious action against hijacked journals. The related policies should be planned, and tools should be developed to support easy detection of hijacked journals. On the publishers' side, the visibility of journals' websites must be enhanced to address this issue.

Bottom trawling on marine environments can drastically modify seafloor geomorphology and sedimentary dynamics not only on the fishing grounds but also in adjacent downslope regions, particularly in submarine canyons environments, which are hotspots of benthic biomass and productivity in the deep sea. When this type of fishery occurs along submarine canyon flanks, it can induce sediment gravity flows that descend along tributary gullies towards the main canyon axis. However, these flows had only been clearly identified in the Palamós Canyon, where they could be recorded synchronously with the passage of the trawling fleet. In this study we also recorded trawl-induced sediment gravity flows in the Blanes Canyon, both synchronously and asynchronously with the passage of trawlers. Increases in particulate matter fluxes in other trawled submarine canyons occurring in absence of natural triggering mechanisms, were not directly associated with bottom trawling because of the lack of direct synchronicity of these events with this human activity. Here we show, however, that the practice of bottom trawling along canyon flanks can not only resuspend and directly trigger sediment gravity flows, but they can also pile up disturbed sediment on steep areas, which can become unstable and collapse afterwards, asynchronically with the passage of trawlers. Our study provides evidence that sediment gravity flows in submarine canyons affected by bottom trawling, where the causal mechanisms are presently unidentified, may potentially be linked to instabilities in sediment originating from recurrent bottom trawling, which can precondition these events.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related liver damage is the most prevalent chronic liver disease, which creates a heavy public health burden worldwide. The leaves of Ampelopsis grossedentata have been considered a popular tea and traditional herbal medicine in China for more than one thousand years, and possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, hepatoprotective, and antiviral activities. PURPOSE: We explored the protective effects of Ampelopsis grossedentata extract (AGE) against chronic alcohol-induced hepatic injury (alcoholic liver disease, ALD), aiming to elucidate its underlying mechanisms. METHODS: Firstly, UPLC-Q/TOF-MS analysis and network pharmacology were used to identify the constituents and elucidate the potential mechanisms of AGE against ALD. Secondly, C57BL/6 mice were pair-fed the Lieber-DeCarli diet containing either isocaloric maltodextrin or ethanol, AGE (150 and 300 mg/kg/d) and silymarin (200 mg/kg) were administered to chronic ethanol-fed mice for 7 weeks to evaluate the hepatoprotective effects. Serum biochemical parameters were determined, hepatic and ileum sections were used for histologic examination, and levels of inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress in the liver were examined. The potential molecular mechanisms of AGE in improving ALD were demonstrated by RNA-seq, Western blotting analysis, and immunofluorescence staining. RESULTS: Ten main constituents of AGE were identified using UPLC-Q/TOF-MS and 274 potential ALD-related targets were identified. The enriched KEGG pathways included Toll-like receptor signaling pathway, NF-κB signaling pathway, and necroptosis. Moreover, in vivo experimental studies demonstrated that AGE significantly reduced serum aminotransferase levels and improved pathological abnormalities after chronic ethanol intake. Meanwhile, AGE improved ALD in mice by down-regulating oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines. Furthermore, AGE notably repaired damaged intestinal epithelial barrier and suppressed the production of gut-derived lipopolysaccharide by elevating intestinal tight junction protein expression. Subsequent RNA-seq and experimental validation indicated that AGE inhibited NF-κB nuclear translocation, suppressed IκB-α, RIPK3 and MLKL phosphorylation and alleviated hepatic necroptosis in mice. CONCLUSION: In this study, we have demonstrated for the first time that AGE protects against alcoholic liver disease by regulating the gut-liver axis and inhibiting the TLR4/NF-κB/MLKL-mediated necroptosis pathway. Therefore, our present work provides important experimental evidence for AGE as a promising candidate for protection against ALD.

ABSTRACT

Drought is a major factor affecting crops, thus efforts are needed to increase plant resilience to this abiotic stress. The overlapping signaling pathways between drought and cell wall integrity maintenance responses create a possibility of increasing drought resistance by modifying cell walls. Here, using herbaceous and woody plant model species, Arabidopsis and hybrid aspen, respectively, we investigated how the integrity of xylan in secondary walls affects the responses of plants to drought stress. Plants, in which secondary wall xylan integrity was reduced by expressing fungal GH10 and GH11 xylanases or by affecting genes involved in xylan backbone biosynthesis, were subjected to controlled drought while their physiological responses were continuously monitored by RGB, fluorescence, and/or hyperspectral cameras. For Arabidopsis, this was supplemented with survival test after complete water withdrawal and analyses of stomatal function and stem conductivity. All Arabidopsis xylan-impaired lines showed better survival upon complete watering withdrawal, increased stomatal density and delayed growth inhibition by moderate drought, indicating increased resilience to moderate drought associated with modified xylan integrity. Subtle differences were recorded between xylan biosynthesis mutants (irx9, irx10 and irx14) and xylanase-expressing lines. irx14 was the most drought resistant genotype, and the only genotype with increased lignin content and unaltered xylem conductivity despite its irx phenotype. Rosette growth was more affected by drought in GH11- than in GH10-expressing plants. In aspen, mild downregulation of GT43B and C genes did not affect drought responses and the transgenic plants grew better than the wild-type in drought and well-watered conditions. Both GH10 and GH11 xylanases strongly inhibited stem elongation and root growth in well-watered conditions but growth was less inhibited by drought in GH11-expressing plants than in wild-type. Overall, plants with xylan integrity impairment in secondary walls were less affected than wild-type by moderately reduced water availability but their responses also varied among genotypes and species. Thus, modifying the secondary cell wall integrity can be considered as a potential strategy for developing crops better suited to withstand water scarcity, but more research is needed to address the underlying molecular causes of this variability.

INTRODUCTION: Brain tumors display remarkable cellular and molecular diversity, significantly impacting the progression and outcomes of the disease. The utilization of tumor tissue acquired through surgical handheld devices for tumor characterization raises important questions regarding translational research. This study seeks to evaluate the integrity of tissue resected using a microdebrider(MD) in the context of establishing tumor organoids from glioblastomas(GBM). METHODS: Tumor samples were collected from patients with GBM using both tumor forceps(en bloc) and a MD(Myriad;Nico,Corp.). The time required to protocol completion and cell viability of paired samples were measured. H&E staining was performed to examine histological morphology. RESULTS: Ten paired samples were obtained from GBM patients using tumor forceps and the MD. Samples collected with the MD demonstrated significantly shorter processing times compared to those obtained through en bloc resection, with overall means of 31.7±2.4mins and 38.8±3mins, respectively(p<0.001). Cell viability measured at the end of protocol completion was comparable between tissues obtained using both the MD and en bloc, with mean viabilities of 80.2±12.4% and 79.1±12.5%, respectively(p=0.848). H&E examination of tissues revealed no significant differences in the cellular and histological characteristics of paired samples obtained using both methods across GBM tumors, nor in the corresponding established organoids. CONCLUSION: Tumor tissues obtained using the MD and en bloc methods demonstrate a high success rate in establishing GBM organoids, with the MD offering the advantage of significantly reduced processing time. Both methods display comparable cell viability and maintain consistent histological characteristics in the resected tissue and the corresponding organoids.

ABSTRACT

The exponential growth of MDPI and Frontiers over the last decade has been powered by their extensive use of special issues. The "special issue-ization" of journal publishing has been particularly associated with new publishers and seen as potentially "questionable." Through an extended case-study analysis of three journals owned by one of the "big five" commercial publishers, this paper explores the risks that this growing use of special issues presents to research integrity. All three case-study journals show sudden and marked changes in their publication patterns. An analysis of special issue editorials and retraction notes was used to determine the specifics of special issues and reasons for retractions. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse data. Findings suggest that these commercial publishers are also promoting special issues and that article retractions are often connected to guest editor manipulation. This underlies the threat that "special issue-ization" presents to research integrity. It highlights the risks posed by the guest editor model, and the importance of extending this analysis to long-existing commercial publishers. The paper emphasizes the need for an in-depth examination of the underlying structures and political economy of science, and a discussion of the rise of gaming and manipulation within higher education systems.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Science integrity initiatives require specific recommendations for randomised clinical trials (RCT). OBJECTIVE: To prepare a set of statements for RCT integrity through an international multi-stakeholder consensus. METHODS: The consensus was developed via multi-country multidisciplinary stakeholder group composition and engagement; evidence synthesis of 55 systematic reviews concerning RCT integrity; anonymised two-round modified Delphi survey with consensus threshold based on the average percent of majority opinions; and, a final consensus development meeting. RESULTS: There were 30 stakeholders representing 15 countries from 5 continents including trialists, ethicists, methodologists, statisticians, consumer representative, industry representative, systematic reviewers, funding body panel members, regulatory experts, authors, journal editors, peer-reviewers and advisors for resolving integrity concerns. Delphi survey response rate was 86.7% (26/30 stakeholders). There were 111 statements (73 stakeholder-provided, 46 systematic review-generated, 8 supported by both) in the initial long list, with 8 additional statements provided during the consensus rounds. Through consensus the final set consolidated 81 statements (49 stakeholder-provided, 41 systematic review-generated, 9 supported by both). The entire RCT life cycle was covered by the set of statements including general aspects (n=6), design and approval (n=11), conduct and monitoring (n=19), reporting of protocols and findings (n=20), post-publication concerns (n=12), and future research and development (n=13). CONCLUSION: Implementation of this multi-stakeholder consensus statement is expected to enhance RCT integrity.

ABSTRACT

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Hyssopus cuspidatus Boriss, a classic Uyghur medicine, is used to treat inflammatory lung diseases such as asthma. But the therapeutic effect and mechanism of the volatile oil of Hyssopus cuspidatus Boriss (HVO) in asthma therapy remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: We aim to characterize the constituents of HVO, investigate the therapeutic effect in OVA-induced allergic asthmatic mice and further explore the molecular mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we applied two-dimensional gas chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-QTOF MS) to identify the ingredients of HVO. We established OVA-induced asthmatic model to investigate the therapeutic effect of HVO. To further explore the potential molecular pathways, we used network pharmacology approach to perform GO and KEGG pathways enrichment, and then built an ingredient-target-pathway network to identify key molecular pathways. Finally, LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages and OVA-induced asthmatic model were used to validate the potential signaling pathways. RESULTS: GC × GC-QTOF MS analysis revealed the presence of 123 compounds of HVO. The sesquiterpenes and monoterpenes are the main constituents. The in vivo study indicated that HVO suppressed OVA-induced eosinophilic infiltration in lung tissues, inhibited the elevation of IgE, IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 levels, downregulated the expressions of phosphorylated PI3K, Akt, JNK and P38, and maintained epithelial barrier integrity via reducing the degradation of occludin, Zo-1, Zo-2, and E-cadherin. The in vitro study also revealed an inhibition of NO release and downregulation of phosphorylated PI3K, Akt, JNK and P38 levels. CONCLUSION: HVO alleviates airway inflammation in OVA-induced asthmatic mice by inhibiting PI3K/Akt/JNK/P38 signaling pathway and maintaining airway barrier integrity via reducing the degradation of occludin, Zo-1, Zo-2, and E-cadherin.

Background: Imbalances in gut microbiota and subsequent destabilization of intestinal barrier equilibrium have been related to the evolution of metabolic disorders. Goji berries (Lycium barbarum; GB) and their fermented counterpart (FGB) have been identified for their prebiotic capacity in managing intestinal barrier functions and inflammatory profiles Consequently, this research was designed to investigate the effects of supplementing GB and FGB on intestinal integrity, inflammation, and changes in the composition of gut microbiota in high-fat (HF)-fed rats. Materials and Methods: Thirty-two male Sprague-Dawley rats (6 weeks old, 8 per group) were divided into four categories based on their weight and provided with either respective diets over a 6-week period: low-fat (LF; 10% of calories from fat), HF (45% of calories from fat), and HF diets supplemented with either GB or FGB at a 2% (w/w). Results: Supplementation of GB and FGB resulted in compositional changes in the gut microbiota, denoted by a distinct abundance of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii with GB and Akkermansia muciniphila species with FGB, which have been linked to ameliorated obesity phenotypes and metabolic parameters. These alterations were correlated with enhancements in gut barrier integrity, thereby protecting against local and systemic inflammation induced by a HF diet. Supplementation with GB and FGB also mitigated lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation through inhibition of its downstream pathway. Conclusion: These findings indicate that both GB and FGB supplementation can improve gut barrier function and inflammatory profiles in HF-fed rats via modulation of the microbial composition of the gut, supporting the potential application of GB and FGB in improving gut barrier function and managing inflammation amid metabolic challenges.

Resonance frequency analysis (RFA) is valuable for assessing implant status. In a previous investigation, acetabular cup fixation was assessed using laser RFA and the pull-down force was predicted in an in vitro setting. While the pull-down force alone is sufficient for initial fixation evaluation, it is desirable to evaluate the bone strength of the foundation for subsequent fixation. Diminished bone quality causes micromotion, migration, and protracted osseointegration, consequently elevating susceptibility to periprosthetic fractures and failure of ingrained trabecular bone. Limited research exists on the evaluation of bone mineral density (BMD) around the cup using RFA. For in vivo application of laser RFA, we implemented the sweep pulse excitation method and engineered an innovative laser RFA device having low laser energy and small dimensions. We focused on a specific frequency range (2500-4500 Hz), where the peak frequency was presumed to be influenced by foundational density. Quantitative computed tomography with a phantom was employed to assess periprosthetic BMD. Correlation between the resonance frequency within the designated range and the density around the cup was evaluated both in the laboratory and in vivo using the novel laser RFA device. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed robust correlations in both experiments (laboratory study: R = 0.728, p < 0.001; in vivo study: R = 0.619, p < 0.001). Our laser RFA system can assess the quality of bone surrounding the cup. Laser RFA holds promise in predicting the risk of loosening and might aid in the decision-making process for additional fixation through screw insertion.

Amongst the unintended consequences of anthropogenic landscape conversion is declining apex predator abundance linked to loss of forest integrity, which can potentially re-order trophic networks. One such re-ordering, known as mesopredator release, occurs when medium-sized predators, also called mesopredators, rapidly increase in abundance following the decline in apex predator abundance, consequently reducing the abundance of mesopredator prey, notably including terrestrial avifauna. We examine the cascading impacts of declining Sunda clouded leopard abundance, itself consequent upon a reduction in forest integrity, on the mesopredator community of Sabah, Malaysia, to determine whether the phenomenon of mesopredator release is manifest and specifically whether it impacts the terrestrial avifauna community of pheasants and pittas. To explore this trophic interaction, we used a piecewise structural equation model to compare changes in the relative abundance of organisms. Our results suggest that loss of forest integrity may have broad impacts on the community and trigger mesopredator release, the two acting additively in their impact on already vulnerable species of terrestrial avifauna: a result not previously documented in tropical systems and rarely detected even on a global scale. The limiting effect that the Sunda clouded leopard has on the Sunda leopard cat could illuminate the mechanism whereby mesopredator release impacts this system. Both Bulwer's pheasant and pittas appear to be significantly impacted by the increase in Sunda leopard cats, while the great argus pheasant shows similar compelling, although not statistically significant, declines as Sunda leopard cats increase. The inverse relationship between Sunda clouded leopards and Sunda leopard cats suggests that if a mesopredator release exists it could have downstream consequences for some terrestrial avifauna. These results suggest the under-studied interface between mammalian carnivores and avifauna, or more broadly species interactions in general, could offer important conservation tool for holistic ecosystem conservation efforts.

ABSTRACT

PUROPSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the sensory processing skills, quality of life and balance performance in adult cochlear implant users. METHODS: A sample of 40 individuals was studied in two groups; 20 normal hearing individuals (37.84 ± 15.39 years old) and 20 cochlear implant users (35.58 ± 11.22 year old). Balance performance was assessed by Computerized Dynamic Posturography. The Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile completed by the individual was used to assess sensory processing skills. Finally, quality of life was assessed with the Short Form-36. RESULTS: Among the different sensory processing parameters in the adolescent/adult sensory profile, a significant difference was found between the two groups in the parameters of low registration, sensory sensitivity and sensory avoidance (p < .05). Visual, vestibular and composite scores were found to be lower in cochlear implant users by Computerised Dynamic Posturography assessment (p < .05). When assessing quality of life, emotional well-being and social functioning parameters were found to be lower in cochlear implant users (p < .05). CONCLUSION: Factors such as the inability to reach sufficient auditory stimuli due to hearing loss and the occurrence of vestibular problems after cochlear implant surgery limit the quantity and quality of sensory stimuli from the environment. Individuals with cochlear implants may prefer to live isolated from society because they cannot adequately process incoming sensory stimuli due to hearing/balance problems, and this may negatively affect the quality of life of individuals. Our findings revealed the necessity of multisensory assessment and therapy protocols when rehabilitating individuals with cochlear implants.

BACKGROUND: The hypothalamus is a key brain structure involved in the pathogenesis of depression, and its abnormal activity is considered an important pathological mechanism for the formation of depression. The presence of abnormalities in the white matter integrity of hypothalamic subregions in mild cognitive impairment with depressive symptoms (D-MCI) remains unknown. METHODS: In this study, we used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to explore the white matter integrity of hypothalamic subregions in D-MCI. On a 3 T magnetic resonance imaging scanner, we collected DTI data from 63 subjects. The subjects included 20 healthy controls (HC), 23 MCI patients without depression (nD-MCI), and 20 patients with D-MCI. The differences in DTI metrics of hypothalamic subregions of the three groups were compared using analysis of variance and post hoc t-tests. We looked at the relationship between clinical variables and DTI metrics in hypothalamus subregions using Pearson correlation analysis. RESULTS: Compared with nD-MCI and HC groups, D-MCI group showed increased fractional anisotropy (FA) in anterior-inferior hypothalamus. There was a weak negative correlation between FA values in the anterior-inferior hypothalamus and depression scores in D-MCI patients. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that depressive symptoms in MCI patients are associated with abnormal white matter integrity in the anterior-inferior hypothalamus.

ABSTRACT

Scientific fake papers, containing manipulated or completely fabricated data, are a problem that has reached dramatic dimensions. Companies known as paper mills (or more bluntly as "criminal science publishing gangs") produce and sell such fake papers on a large scale. The main drivers of the fake paper flood are the pressure in academic systems and (monetary) incentives to publish in respected scientific journals and sometimes the personal desire for increased "prestige." Published fake papers cause substantial scientific, economic, and social damage. There are numerous information sources that deal with this topic from different points of view. This review aims to provide an overview of these information sources until June 2024. Much more original research with larger datasets is needed, for example on the extent and impact of the fake paper problem and especially on how to detect them, as many findings are based more on small datasets, anecdotal evidence, and assumptions. A long-term solution would be to overcome the mantra of publication metrics for evaluating scientists in academia.
