ABSTRACT

The aim of this 2-year study was to evaluate the influence of bed depth (40 and 60 cm) on the development of tropical ornamental species (Alpinia purpurata, Heliconia latispatha and Strelitzia reginae) and on the removal of different contaminants such as chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrate (N-NO3), ammonium (N-NH4), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total suspended solids (TSS), total coliforms (TCs) and fecal coliforms (FCs), in horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (HSSF-CWs) for municipal wastewater treatment. The results showed that the depth of 60 cm favored the removal of COD, with removal efficiencies of 94% for the three plant species. The depth of 40 cm was most effective for the removal of N-NH4 (80-90%). Regarding the removal of TN, the removals were similar for the different plants and depths (72-86%). The systems only achieved up to 60% removal of TCs and FCs. The depth of the CWs substrate and its saturation level influenced the development of ornamental vegetation, particularly flower production. For Heliconia latispatha, a bed depth level of 60 cm was more suitable, while for Alpinia purpurata 40 cm was better, and for Strelitzia reginae in both cases there was no flower production. The impact of bed depth on contaminant removal depends on the specific type of contaminant.

ABSTRACT

In this article, a patient monitoring system is proposed that is able to obtain heart rate and oxygen saturation (SpO2) levels of patients, identify abnormal conditions, and inform emergency status to the nurses. The proposed monitoring system consists of smart patient wristbands, smart nurse wristbands, central monitoring user interface (UI) software, and a wireless communication network. In the proposed monitoring system, a unique smart wristband is dedicated to each of the patients and nurses. To measure heart rate and SpO2 level, a pulse oximeter sensor is used in the patient wristbands. The output of this sensor is transferred to the wristband's microcontroller where heart rate and SpO2 are calculated through advanced signal processing algorithms. Then, the calculated values are transmitted to central UI software through a wireless network. In the UI software, received values are compared with their normal values and a predefined message is sent to the nurses' wristband if an abnormal condition is identified. Whenever this message is received by a nurse's wristband, an acoustic alarm with vibration is generated to inform an emergency status to the nurse. By doing so, health services are delivered to the patients more quickly and as a result, the probability of the patient recovery is increased effectively.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To develop a computational method for oxygen-saturation-related functional parameter analysis of retinal vessels based on traditional color fundus photography, and to explore their characteristic alterations in type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods: 50 type 2 DM patients with no-clinically detectable retinopathy (NDR) and 50 healthy subjects were enrolled in the study. An optical density ratio (ODR) extraction algorithm based on the separation of oxygen-sensitive and oxygen-insensitive channels in color fundus photography was proposed. With precise vascular network segmentation and arteriovenous labeling, ODRs were acquired from different vascular subgroups, and the global ODR variability (ODRv) was calculated. Student's t-test was used to analyze the differences of the functional parameters between groups, and regression analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to explore the discrimination efficiency of DM patients from healthy subjects based on these functional parameters. Results: There was no significant difference in the baseline characteristics between the NDR and healthy normal groups. The ODRs of all vascular subgroups except the micro venule were significantly higher (p<0.05, respectively) while ODRv was significantly lower (p<0.001) in NDR group than that in healthy normal group. In the regression analysis, the increased ODRs except micro venule and decreased ODRv were significantly correlated with the incidence of DM, and the C-statistic for discrimination DM with all ODR is 0.777 (95% CI 0.687-0.867, p<0.001). Conclusion: A computational method to extract the retinal vascular oxygen-saturation-related optical density ratios (ODRs) with single color fundus photography was developed, and increased ODRs and decreased ODRv of retinal vessels could be new potential image biomarkers of DM.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To achieve an accurate diagnosis of idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM) through analyzing retinal blood vessel oxygen saturation (SO2) and vascular morphological features in fundus images. METHODS: Dual-modal fundus camera was used to obtain color fundus image, 570-nm, and 610-nm images. As iERM affects the macular area, a macular-centered semicircle area as region of interest (MROI) was selected and analyzed SO2 and vascular morphologies in it. Eventually, random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM) were as classifiers to diagnose iERM patients. RESULTS: The arterial and venous SO2 levels of the iERM group were significantly higher than that of the control group. There were significant differences in the vessel density and fractal dimension on the artery for vascular morphology, while the tortuosity had a significant difference in the vein. By feeding the SO2 and the vascular morphological features into classifiers, an accuracy of over 82% was obtained, which is significantly better than the two separate inputs for classification. CONCLUSION: Significant differences in SO2 and vascular morphologies between control and iERM groups confirmed that the occurrence of iERM may affect blood supply and vascular structures. Benefiting from the dual-modal fundus camera and machine learning models, accurate judgments can be made on fundus images. Extensive experiments proved the importance of blood vessel SO2 and vascular morphologies for diagnosis, which is of great significance for clinical screening.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Study on the association of white matter lesions with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome and its risk factors. METHODS: A recruited study with a sample of 172 patients from the department of neurology of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University between 2015 and 2019. RESULTS: According to the univariate analysis, the independent variables where P < 0.1 were included in the multivariate logistic regression model. After adjusting for confounding factors, the two-category logistic regression showed that Obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) (OR = 8.347, 95%CI: 2.561 ~ 27.212, P < 0.001) were independent risk factors for WML, and that the prevalence of Cerebral white matter lesions (WML) increased with the severity of OSAHS (P = 0.002). In the non-OSAHS group, the mild OSAHS group, and the moderate-to-severe OSAHS group the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) in the supine position was significantly higher than that in the left or right lateral position, showing a decreasing trend. The SaO2 < 90% total sleep time (TST SaO2 < 90%) showed an increasing trend, as did the body mass index. In the OSAHS severity groups, the AHI in the supine position was significantly higher than that in the left or right lateral position. Spearman correlation analysis showed that WML was positively related to AHI in the supine position (r = 0.209, P = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS: OSAHS was an independent risk factor for WML. There was a positive relationship between WML and AHI in the supine position. INTRODUCTION: Direct laryngoscopy in children is usually performed with spontaneous ventilation and monitored by pulse oximetry. It is currently unknown if spontaneous ventilation has an effect on cerebral oxygenation. We hypothesized that cerebral oxygenation may be impeded during direct laryngoscopy with spontaneous ventilation in children. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine if children who undergo direct laryngoscopy under general anesthesia with spontaneous breathing experience significant reductions in cerebral oxygen saturation levels, and whether or not these reductions are accompanied by decreases in peripheral oxygen saturation levels. METHODS: This pilot study included 16 consecutive children who underwent direct laryngoscopy under general anesthesia and spontaneous ventilation. The INVOS™ system, which is currently used to monitor cerebral oxygen saturation levels during neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery, consists of a processing unit and 2 sensors that are applied to the patient's forehead. We used it to record cerebral oxygenation levels throughout the procedure. Peripheral pulse oximetry was recorded simultaneously, and the results were compared to the levels recorded by the INVOS™ system. RESULTS: Cerebral oxygen saturation levels decreased by more than 20% from baseline in 7/10 children with tracheostomy and in 2/6 children without tracheostomy, while peripheral oxygen saturation levels remained intact in all the children. The mean time from induction of anesthesia to significant decrease in the cerebral oxygenation level (rSO2) was 14 ± 6 min for the tracheostomy group and 14.5 ± 1.5 min for the no tracheostomy group. CONCLUSIONS: Children who undergo direct laryngoscopy under general anesthesia with spontaneous ventilation may display reductions in brain oxygenation levels that are not detected by standard pulse oximetry, which reflects only peripheral oxygenation levels. Further study is required to explore the possible effect of this phenomenon in children who undergo direct laryngoscopy.

ABSTRACT

Colloidal self-assembly is a process in which dispersed matter spontaneously form higher-order structures without external intervention. During self-assembly, packed particles are subject to solvent-evaporation induced dynamic structuring phases, which leads to microscale defects called the grain boundaries. While it is imperative to precisely control detailed grain boundaries to fabricate well-defined self-assembled crystals, the understanding of the colloidal physics that govern grain boundaries remains a challenge due to limited resolutions of current visualization approaches. In this work, we experimentally report in situ particle clustering dynamics during evaporative colloidal assembly by studying a novel microscale laser induced fluorescence technique. The fluorescence microscopy measures the saturation levels with high fidelity to identify distinct colloidal structuring regimes during self-assembly as well as cracking mechanics. The techniques discussed in this work not only enables unprecedented levels of colloidal self-assembly analysis but also have potential to be used for various sensing applications with microscopic resolutions.

ABSTRACT

The main objective of this research is to investigate the effect of water content in concrete on the velocities of ultrasonic waves (P- and S-waves) and mechanical properties (elastic modulus and compressive strength) of concrete. For this study, concrete specimens (100 mm × 200 mm cylinders) were fabricated with three different water-to-binder ratios (0.52, 0.35, and 0.26). These cylinders were then submerged in water to be saturated in different degrees from 25% to 100% with an interval of 25% saturation. Another set of cylinders was also oven-dried to represent the dry condition. The dynamic properties of concrete were then assessed using a measurement of elastic wave accordance with ASTM C597-16 and using resonance tests following ASTM C215-19, before and after immersion in water. The static properties of saturated concrete were also assessed by the uniaxial compressive testing according to ASTM C39/C39M-20 and ASTM C469/C469M-14. It was observed that the saturation level of concrete affected the two ultrasonic wave velocities and the two static mechanical properties of concrete in various ways. The relationship between P-wave velocity and compressive strength of concrete was highly sensitive to saturation condition of concrete. In contrast, S-wave velocity of concrete was closely correlated with compressive strength of concrete, which was much less sensitive to water saturation level compared to P-wave velocity of concrete. Finally, it was noticed that water saturation condition only little affects the relationship between the dynamic and elastic moduli of elasticity of concrete studies in this study.

AIM: To analyse the effect of colours on children's emotions and variations in anxiety levels using six different coloured attires, white, pink, yellow, green, purple and black. METHODS: Seventy-two children aged between 5-9 years old who had come for restorative treatment in the Department of Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry, I.T.S. Dental College, Muradnagar, Ghaziabad, India were chosen and divided according to Corah's dental anxiety scale into 4 levels of anxiety. Eighteen children from each level were then assigned six different colours (3 children for each colour). A two factor study was conducted to determine the influence of colours, anxiety levels or facial expressions on oxygen saturation levels and pulse rate of the children. Data was analysed using SPSS 16.0 for ANOVA. RESULTS: There was significant difference between colours influencing oxygen saturation levels (p = 0.001) and pulse rate (p = 0.038). A post-hoc test indicated that black colour was significantly different from most of the other colours. No interaction effect was found to exist between colours and facial expression. CONCLUSIONS: Data suggested that yellow, pink and purple colours may have reduced anxiety among children whereas black colour could have enhanced it.

PURPOSE: Spherical reconstituted high density lipoprotein (rHDL) can target atherosclerotic lesions by the very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) receptor, which is seldom expressed in liver. By promoting this pathway, the targeting efficiency was hyphothesized to be improved due to avoiding undesired uptake in liver mediated by the scavenger receptor class B type I (SR-BI). In this study, how fatty acid modification in spherical rHDL influenced the VLDL receptor-mediated endocytosis pathway was investigated. METHODS: Stearic acid (SA) and arachidonic acid (AA) with different saturation levels were utilized to modify the lovastatin-loaded rHDL (LS-rHDL). Phagocytosis test on foam cells with or without cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) expression was conducted to observe the cellular uptake of the SA or AA modified rHDL and the non-modified one. Raman spectroscopy, guanidine hydrochloride (Gdn-HCl) denaturation experiment and in vitro evaluation of drug release were used to analyze the related mechanism. RESULTS: In comparison with the non-modified rHDL, AA modification could reduce the packing order of the rHDL phospholipid acyl chains, leading to the decreased apoA-I binding extent with lipid and the increased drug release, while the opposite was true for SA modification. The AA-modified rHDL exhibited a higher uptake of foam cells expressing CETP than the non-modified one, while the SA-modified one showed the lowest cellular uptake among the three rHDLs. CONCLUSIONS: Increased unsaturation level can facilitate lipid-interchange process where the cargo in rHDL core may transfer to VLDL more easily, and then promote the endocytosis mediated by the VLDL receptor.

ABSTRACT

This study compares the critical oxygen saturation (O2 crit ) levels of the shiner perch Cymatogaster aggregata obtained using two different methods wherein hypoxia is induced either by the fish's respiration (closed respirometry) or by degassing oxygen with nitrogen (intermittent-flow respirometry). Fish exhibited loss of equilibrium at a higher O2 saturation in the closed respirometry method when compared with the intermittent-flow method. Utilization of closed respirometry yielded O2 crit measurements that were almost twice as high as those obtained with intermittent-flow respirometry. The lower hypoxia tolerance in closed respirometry is consistent with additional stress, caused by a build-up of ammonia and carbon dioxide and a faster rate in dissolved oxygen decline. The results indicate that these two methods of determining hypoxia tolerance in aquatic organisms are not comparable, and that much care should be given to method choice.

However, it is still not clear which clinical factors are related with the presence of hypertension in OSA patients. We aimed to find different physical features and compare the sleep study results which are associated with the occurrence of hypertension in OSA patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for patients diagnosed with OSA at Severance Cardiovascular Hospital between 2010 and 2013. Males with moderate to severe OSA patients were enrolled in this study. Clinical and polysomnographic features were evaluated to assess clinical variables that are significantly associated with hypertension by statistical analysis. RESULTS: Among men with moderate to severe OSA, age was negatively correlated with hypertension (odds ratio=0.956), while neck circumference was positively correlated with the presence of hypertension (odds ratio=1.363). Among the polysomnographic results, the lowest O2 saturation during sleep was significantly associated with the presence of hypertension (odds ratio=0.900). CONCLUSION: Age and neck circumference should be considered as clinically significant features, and the lowest blood O2 saturation during sleep should be emphasized in predicting the coexistence or development of hypertension in OSA patients.

OBJECTIVE: To examine relationships among blood pressure (BP), adiposity, and sleep quality with the use of overnight polysomnography in obese adolescents. STUDY DESIGN: Overnight polysomnogram and morning BP measurements were performed in obese (body mass index [BMI] >95th percentile) nondiabetic adolescents (eligible age range 12-18 years, n = 49). Subjects were stratified into 2 groups, one with normal BP, and one with elevated BP, and demographic and clinical characteristics were compared between the groups. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to assess the effects of sleep quality on BP. RESULTS: Participants (n = 27) had a normal morning BP, and 22 (44.9%) had elevated morning BP. There were no differences in age (P = .53), sex (P = .44), race (P = .58), or BMI (P = .56) between the 2 BP groups. The group with elevated BP spent shorter percentages of time in rapid eye movement (REM; P = .006) and slow-wave sleep (SWS; P = .024). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that a lower percentage of both REM and SWS was associated with increased morning BP after we adjusted for pubertal stage, sex, race, and BMI. CONCLUSION: Lack of deeper stages of sleep, REM sleep, and SWS is associated with greater morning BP in obese adolescents, independent of BMI. Poor sleep quality should be considered in the work-up of obese youth with hypertension. Intervention studies are needed to evaluate whether improving the quality of sleep will decrease BP elevation.

ABSTRACT

O mapeamento genético é um passo necessário para entender a organização genômica e a relação entre genes e o fenótipo. Um dos principais problemas está em encontrar a ordem, o espaçamento correto dos marcadores em um mapa genético, assim como o número de indivíduos a compor uma população. Deste modo, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o nível de saturação do genoma e o tamanho ideal de populações simulada duplo-haplóide para a construção de mapas de ligação mais confiáveis por meio de simulação computacional. Foram simulados genomas parentais e populações duplo-haplóide considerando marcadores moleculares do tipo dominante, espaçados de forma equidistante a 5, 10 e 20 cM. Os tamanhos das populações geradas foram de 100, 200, 300, 500, 800 e 1000 indivíduos, com dez grupos de ligação cada e 100 repetições por amostra. Procedeu-se a análise de todas as populações geradas obtendo um genoma analisado o qual foi comparado com o genoma simulado inicialmente. Observou-se que o tamanho ideal de populações duplo-haplóide para mapeamento genético foi de no mínimo 200, 500 e 1000 indivíduos para genomas saturados, medianamente saturados e com baixa saturação. Populações de mesmo tamanho tendem a produzir mapas com maior acurácia em níveis de saturação do genoma mais elevados.


Genetic mapping is a necessary step to understand the genomic organization and the relationship between genes and phenotypes. A major problem is to find the order, the correct spacing of the markers in a genetic map, and the number of individuals to compose a population. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the saturation level of the genome and the optimal size of simulated double-haploid populations for the construction reliable linkage maps by means of computer simulation. Parental genomes and double-haploid populations were simulated considering dominant molecular markers, spaced equidistantly at 5, 10 and 20 cM. The sizes of the generated populations were 100, 200, 300, 500, 800 and 1000 individuals, with ten linking groups and 100 replicates per sample. It was proceeded the analysis of all generated population obtaining a genome which was compared with the first simulated genome. It was observed that the optimal size of double-haploid populations for genetic mapping has been at least 200, 500 and 1000 individuals for saturated genomes, medium unsaturated and low saturation. Populations of the same size tend to produce maps with greater accuracy in higher levels of genome saturation.

CONTEXT: Apgar score (AS) is routinely used for assessment of newborns immediately after birth. Within acceptable limits, low saturations at birth are normal in vigorous newborn babies. Various studies have questioned the reliability of AS. AIMS: To detect whether AS is an accurate indicator of hypoxemia and to study the correlation of different components of AS with the arterial oxygenation saturation (SpO2) levels of normal newborns in the delivery room. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: A prospective cross-sectional observational study on normal healthy neonates delivered vaginally in a tertiary level referral medical college. MATERIALS AND METHODS: SpO2 levels were monitored continuously in the newborns with a pulse oximeter and serial recording of SpO2 levels was done at 5 min intervals starting at 1 min of life until 30 min after birth. Simultaneously, AS was recorded in these newborns at 1 and 5 min of life. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Data was analyzed using the Mann-Whitney-U test. RESULTS: AS at 1 and 5 min of life didn't correlate with the changes in SpO2 of newborns. In AS; though respiratory efforts and muscle tone were significantly correlated with SpO2 of the newborns, body color did not have significant correlation with simultaneously recorded SpO2. CONCLUSIONS: A revised AS in which evaluation of color is replaced by pulse oximetry monitoring would prove to be a better tool for neonatal evaluation in the immediate postnatal period.
