ABSTRACT

Formic and acetic acids are the most abundant gaseous organic acids and play the key role in the atmospheric chemistry. In iodine-adduct chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS), the low utilization efficiency of methyl iodide and humidity interference are two major issues of the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) lamp initiated CIMS for on-line gaseous formic and acetic acids analysis. In this work, we present a new CIMS based on VUV lamp, and the ion-molecular reactor is separated into photoionization and chemical ionization zones by a reducer electrode. Acetone was added to the photoionization zone, and the VUV photoionization acetone provided low-energy electrons for methyl iodide to generate I-, and the addition of acetone reduced the amount of methyl iodide by 2/3. In the chemical ionization zone, a headspace vial containing ultrapure water was added for humidity calibration, and the vial changes the sensitivity as a function of humidity from ambiguity to well linear correlation (R2 > 0.95). With humidity calibration, the CIMS can quantitatively measure formic and acetic acids in the humidity range of 0%-88% RH. In this mode, limits of detection of 10 and 50 pptv are obtained for formic and acetic acids, respectively. And the relative standard deviation (RSD) of quantitation stability for 6 days were less than 10.5%. This CIMS was successfully used to determine the formic and acetic acids in the underground parking and ambient environment of the Shandong University campus (Qingdao, China). In addition, we developed a simple model based formic acid concentration to assess vehicular emissions.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The effectiveness and safety of propofol-based sedation and midazolam sedation in pediatric bidirectional endoscopy were compared. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the cases of pediatric patients (≤15 years old) who had undergone bidirectional endoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy, and colonoscopy by pediatric gastroenterologists. Demographic data, indications, sedatives/dosages, clinical outcomes, endoscopic findings, adverse events, and total patient time requirements (total time in which patients stay in our hospital) were compared in the two sedation groups. Results: Ninety-one children (51 boys, 40 girls, mean age 13 years, range 9-15) treated at our hospital were enrolled. Propofol alone or in combination with midazolam and/or pentazocine was administered to 51 patients (propofol-based sedation group). Midazolam alone or in combination with pentazocine was administered to the other 40 patients (midazolam sedation group). In the propofol group, the following mean doses were used: propofol, 96 mg (range 40-145 mg); midazolam, 4.9 mg (range 3-5 mg); and pentazocine, 7.5 mg. In the midazolam group, the mean doses of midazolam and pentazocine were 6.2 mg (range 4-10 mg) and 15 mg, respectively. All procedures were successfully completed by pediatric gastroenterologists. The total procedure times and endoscopic findings were similar in the two groups, but the median patient time requirement in the propofol group was significantly shorter versus the midazolam group (7.3 h vs. 8.4 h, p < 0.001). No adverse events occurred in either group. Conclusions: Propofol-based sedation in pediatric bidirectional endoscopy was safely and effectively performed by pediatric gastroenterologists, and its patient time requirement was shorter than that for midazolam sedation.

Objetivo: analisar a incidência e os fatores relacionados à obstrução de cateter intravenoso periférico em adultos hospitalizados. Método: uma coorte prospectiva, realizada a partir da observação de 203 cateteres, entre fevereiro de 2019 e maio de 2020, em hospital público e de ensino brasileiro. Foram consideradas variáveis clínicas e do cateter. Os dados foram analisados descritivamente e por estatística inferencial. Resultados: o tempo de permanência variou entre um a 15 dias e a obstrução ocorreu em 7,5% das observações. Houve aumento do risco de obstrução em relação ao sexo (RR=0,49 / p=0,186), à idade (RR=1,20/ p=0,732), aos cateteres de maior calibre (RR=0,53/ p=0,250), à inserção no dorso da mão até antebraço (RR=2,33/ p=0,114) e ao tempo do cateter in situ (RR=033/ p=0,433). Conclusão: O cuidado diário e observação do cateter intravenoso periférico são importantes para minimizar o surgimento de complicações locais e sistêmicas e manter a patência do dispositivo.

Method: a prospective cohort, based on the observation of 203 catheters, between February 2019 and May 2020, in a Brazilian public teaching hospital. Clinical and catheter variables were taken into account. The data was analyzed descriptively and using inferential statistics. Results: the length of stay ranged from one to 15 days and obstruction occurred in 7.5% of the observations. There was an increased obstruction risk in relation to gender (RR=0.49 / p=0.186), age (RR=1.20/ p=0.732), larger catheters (RR=0.53/ p=0.250), insertion in the back of the hand up to the forearm (RR=2.33/ p=0.114) and the time length the catheter was in situ (RR=033/ p=0.433). Conclusion: Daily care and observation of the peripheral intravenous catheter is important to minimize the appearance of local and systemic complications and maintain the patency of the device.

BACKGROUND: Badminton, a dynamic sport, demands players to display exceptional physical attributes such as agility, core stability, and reaction time. Backward walking training on a treadmill has garnered attention for its potential to enhance physical attributes and optimize performance in athletes while minimizing the risk of injuries. OBJECTIVE: By investigating the efficacy of this novel approach, we aim to provide valuable insights to optimize training regimens and contribute to the advancement of sports science in badminton. METHODOLOGY: Sixty-four participants were randomized into a control group (n = 32) and an experimental group (n = 32). The control group received routine exercise training, while the experimental group received routine exercise training along with additional backward walking training on the treadmill. Pre- and post-intervention measurements were taken for core stability using the Plank test, balance using the Star Excursion Balance test, reaction time using the 6-point footwork test, and agility using the Illinois Agility test. RESULTS: The results showed that the experimental group demonstrated significant improvements in core stability (p < 0.001), balance (p < 0.001), reaction time (p < 0.05), and agility (p < 0.001) compared to the control group. The backward walking training proved to be effective in enhancing these physical attributes in badminton players. CONCLUSION: Incorporating backward walking exercises into the training regimen of badminton players may contribute to their overall performance.

ABSTRACT

Metal-ion-dependent nucleases play crucial roles in cellular defense and biotechnological applications. Time-resolved crystallography has resolved catalytic details of metal-ion-dependent DNA hydrolysis and synthesis, uncovering the essential roles of multiple metal ions during catalysis. The histidine-metal (His-Me) superfamily nucleases are renowned for binding one divalent metal ion and requiring a conserved histidine to promote catalysis. Many His-Me family nucleases, including homing endonucleases and Cas9 nuclease, have been adapted for biotechnological and biomedical applications. However, it remains unclear how the single metal ion in His-Me nucleases, together with the histidine, promotes water deprotonation, nucleophilic attack, and phosphodiester bond breakage. By observing DNA hydrolysis in crystallo with His-Me I-PpoI nuclease as a model system, we proved that only one divalent metal ion is required during its catalysis. Moreover, we uncovered several possible deprotonation pathways for the nucleophilic water. Interestingly, binding of the single metal ion and water deprotonation are concerted during catalysis. Our results reveal catalytic details of His-Me nucleases, which is distinct from multi-metal-ion-dependent DNA polymerases and nucleases.

ABSTRACT

In Brazil, where Chagas disease is endemic, the most frequent form of transmission of the parasite is the oral route, associated with greater severity and worse response to benznidazole (BZ), the drug used in its treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of gastrointestinal infection (GI) and BZ treatment on the parasitological and histopathological parameters in mice inoculated with a strain of T. cruzi II. Swiss mice were inoculated by GI and intraperitoneal (IP) routes with 2x106 culture-derived metacyclic trypomastigotes of the Y strain (TcII) of T. cruzi and were treated with BZ in the acute phase of the infection. Fresh blood examination, qPCR, histopathological and biochemical evaluations (enzymatic dosages and oxidative stress-OS) were performed. BZ treatment of uninfected animals caused changes in the liver, increased the activity of aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase enzymes and OS, showing that the drug alone affects this organ. Inflammation and necrosis in the cardiac tissue were less intense and deaths occurred later in animals inoculated via the GI route than the animals inoculated via the IP route. BZ reduced the intensity of tissue lesions and avoided lethality in animals inoculated via the GI route, and decreased parasitemia and OS in those inoculated via both routes. Although BZ alone caused liver damage, it was less intense than that caused by both routes of inoculation. Infection with the Y strain of T. cruzi II via the GI route proved to be less virulent and pathogenic and responded better to treatment than the infection acquired via the IP route.

Objectives: In our previous article, we proposed the novel four-handed technique (FHT) for total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH), which, according to us, is more helpful compared to the traditional TLH route. The objectives of the study were to analyze the FHT-TLH feasibility and efficiency by comparing some surgical outcomes recorded from 750 FHT-TLH performed in our hospital to literature data about the traditional TLH route and to underline the great opportunity this novel technique offers to the young specialists and residents to be more confident with gynecological laparoscopy. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective analysis carried out by collecting data regarding patient characteristics and surgical outcomes (operative time, blood loss, surgical complications, use of analgesics, and length of hospitalization) from 750 hospital records of women who underwent FHT-TLH (with or without adnexectomy) due to benign or malignant pathology from January 2015 to December 2021 at our hospital. Results: We performed a total of 750 FHT-TLH, with or without adnexectomy. The mean skin-to-skin operative time for a FHT-TLH was 50 min, and the mean blood loss was 150 mL. No visceral damage was caused during surgeries. Only two patients underwent exploratory laparotomy with total abdominal hysterectomy due to the inability to proceed laparoscopically. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were administered only twice a day as analgesics, with advantage. The mean length of stay in the hospital after the procedure was 1.5 days, with discharge on the evening of the 1st day after surgery. No major postoperative complications occurred. The only minor postoperative complication described, in just three patients, was cellulitis of the vaginal vault. Conclusion: Our FHT-TLH experience represents an alternative to the traditional TLH route, which allows to apply a minimally invasive approach with some advantages for patients compared to the traditional TLH route, such as early recovery and reduced operating time, blood loss, use of analgesics, and hospital stay. Moreover, it allows young specialists and residents to be more confident with gynecological laparoscopy, particularly when operating as the first assistant, to improve their laparoscopic surgical skills faster than the traditional TLH route allows them.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to analyze osteotomy gap filling of multiple time points until 2 years post-medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOWHTO). The absolute value of gap filling and postoperative changes relative to the preoperative void osteotomy gap were evaluated using computed tomography (CT) at each time point. METHODS: Data of thirty patients who underwent MOWHTO between September 2019 and July 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Surgical procedures without bone grafts were performed; a standardized rehabilitation protocol was implemented. The osteotomy gap filling rate was measured using CT scans at the immediate postoperative period and at 6, 12, and 24 months after surgery. Statistical analysis was performed to assess changes over time. RESULTS: The osteotomy gap filling rate showed a significant continuous increase after MOWHTO, reaching 45.2% at 6 months and 66.7 and 84.4% at 1 and 2 years postoperatively, respectively. The most substantial increase occurred within the initial 6 months, thus indicating a critical period for bone healing. CONCLUSION: The osteotomy gap filling rate showed a significant and gradual increase from immediately after surgery to 2 years after MOWTHO without bone grafting, the greatest of which was achieved in the initial 6-month period. Therefore, this study may be helpful for planning postoperative rehabilitation, including the extent of weight-bearing load and the period of crutch use.

ABSTRACT

Wastewater treatment innovation toward resource recovery facilities raises concerns about the adsorption and bio-degradation (A-B) process. This study integrated enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) into the A-stage for real domestic sewage treatment using the short sludge retention time (S-SRT) approach. The S-SRT approach resulted in outstanding phosphorus (over 90 %) and COD removal (approximately 88 %), increased sludge yield and organic matter content, and a 1.68-fold increase in energy recovery efficiency by sludge anaerobic digestion. The inhibition of nitrification relieved competition for carbon sources between denitrification and phosphorus removal, allowing for the enrichment of phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs) such as Tetrasphaera and Halomonas, leading to enhanced phosphorus removal activities. Biological adsorption also plays a significant role in achieving steady phosphorus removal performance. This study demonstrates the potential of the S-SRT approach as an effective strategy for simultaneous carbon and phosphorus capture in the A-stage, contributing to energy and nutrient recovery from sewage.

High-throughput intact glycopeptide analysis is crucial for elucidating the physiological and pathological status of the glycans attached to each glycoprotein. Mass spectrometry-based glycoproteomic methods are challenging because of the diversity and heterogeneity of glycan structures. Therefore, we developed an MS1-based site-specific glycoform analysis method named "Glycan heterogeneity-based Relational IDentification of Glycopeptide signals on Elution profile (Glyco-RIDGE)" for a more comprehensive analysis. This method detects glycopeptide signals as a cluster based on the mass and chromatographic properties of glycopeptides and then searches for each combination of core peptides and glycan compositions by matching their mass and retention time differences. Here, we developed a novel browser-based software named GRable for semi-automated Glyco-RIDGE analysis with significant improvements in glycopeptide detection algorithms, including "parallel clustering." This unique function improved the comprehensiveness of glycopeptide detection and allowed the analysis to focus on specific glycan structures, such as pauci-mannose. The other notable improvement is evaluating the "confidence level" of the GRable results, especially using MS2 information. This function facilitated reduced misassignment of the core peptide and glycan composition and improved the interpretation of the results. Additional improved points of the algorithms are "correction function" for accurate monoisotopic peak picking; one-to-one correspondence of clusters and core peptides even for multiply sialylated glycopeptides; and "inter-cluster analysis" function for understanding the reason for detected but unmatched clusters. The significance of these improvements was demonstrated using purified and crude glycoprotein samples, showing that GRable allowed site-specific glycoform analysis of intact sialylated glycoproteins on a large-scale and in-depth. Therefore, this software will help us analyze the status and changes in glycans to obtain biological and clinical insights into protein glycosylation by complementing the comprehensiveness of MS2-based glycoproteomics. GRable can be freely run online using a web browser via the GlyCosmos Portal (https://glycosmos.org/grable).

Factors contributing to social inequalities are associated with negative mental health outcomes and disparities in mental well-being. We propose a Bayesian hierarchical controlled interrupted time series to evaluate the impact of policies on population well-being whilst accounting for spatial and temporal patterns. Using data from the UKs Household Longitudinal Study, we apply this framework to evaluate the impact of the UKs welfare reform implemented in the 2010s on the mental health of the participants, measured using the GHQ-12 index. Our findings indicate that the reform led to a 2.36% (95% CrI: 0.57%-4.37%) increase in the national GHQ-12 index in the exposed group, after adjustment for the control group. Moreover, the geographical areas that experienced the largest increase in the GHQ-12 index are from more disadvantage backgrounds than affluent backgrounds.

The Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) is one of the areas in China most severely affected by harmful algal blooms (HABs). This study explored the distributive patterns of HABs in the YRE and how they are influenced by the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and other environmental factors. Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) was employed to detect and quantify the four predominant HAB species in the YRE, Karenia mikimotoi, Margalefidinium polykrikoides, Prorocentrum donghaiense, and Heterosigma akashiwo. Additionally, the study analyzed how turbidity, pH, salinity, and temperature influence these algae. Distribution of the four HAB species in the YRE area shows clear geographical variations: K. mikimotoi is predominantly found in the northwest and central sea areas, M. polykrikoides (East Asian Ribotype, EAR) is mainly distributed in the southeastern part, P. donghaiense is abundant in the northern regions, and H. akashiwo is especially prevalent at stations S26 and S27 in the northeastern part of the study area. HABs dominated by H. akashiwo and P. donghaiense were observed in the northeastern sea area of the YRE on July 22, 2020. Our study reveals that K. mikimotoi, M. polykrikoides (EAR), and P. donghaiense are mainly affected by turbidity, pH, and salinity, while temperature predominantly influences the blooms of H. akashiwo. Moreover, runoff in the YRE has a certain correlation with ENSO events, which may also impact the nutrient content of the region. The findings of this study illustrate the distributive patterns of the four HAB species under various ecological conditions in the YRE and emphasize the importance of establishing practical cases for future warning systems. To better understand how climate change affects HABs, exploring the link between ENSO and HABs is essential.

PURPOSE: There is limited evidence regarding the impact of public health restrictions on hip fracture hospitalization by place of fracture occurrence. This study aimed to examine the impact of COVID-19 public health restrictions on fall-related hip fracture hospitalization rates by place of occurrence. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted using hospitalization data in New South Wales, Australia, between January 2014 and June 2022. Older adults aged ≥65 years admitted to hospital following a fall-related hip fracture. An interrupted time-series analysis using autoregressive integrated moving average models evaluated the impact of public health restrictions on fall-related hip fracture hospitalization by place of fracture occurrence (home/residence, residential aged care facility (RACF), or away from usual residence). RESULTS: The mean observed fall-related hip fracture hospitalization rate during COVID-19 public health restrictions (36.3 per 100,000 people per month) was 13.4 % lower than the forecasted rate (41.1 per 100,000 people per month). The mean observed hospitalization rates for fall-related hip fractures at home/residence, at a RACF, and away from the usual residence were 3.8 %, 18.5 %, and 40.1 % lower than the forecasted rates, respectively. Level changes in the fall-related hip fracture hospitalization rates at RACFs and away from usual residences were -0.9 per 100,000 people per month (95 % CI -1.6 to -0.2) and -1.7 per 100,000 people per month (95 % CI -2.5 to -0.9), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: There was a decline in fall-related hip fracture hospitalization rates among older adults, where the fracture occurred at RACFs and away from a person's usual residence during COVID-19 public health restrictions.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in the prediction of financial market trends, due to its potential applications in the real world. Unlike traditional investment avenues such as the stock market, the foreign exchange (Forex) market revolves around two primary types of orders that correspond with the market's direction: upward and downward. Consequently, forecasting the behaviour of the Forex behaviour market can be simplified into a binary classification problem to streamline its complexity. Despite the significant enhancements and improvements in performance seen in recent proposed predictive models for the forex market, driven by the advancement of deep learning in various domains, it remains imperative to approach these models with careful consideration of best practices and real-world applications. Currently, only a limited number of papers have been dedicated to this area. This article aims to bridge this gap by proposing a practical implementation of deep learning-based predictive models that perform well for real-world trading activities. These predictive mechanisms can help traders in minimising budget losses and anticipate future risks. Furthermore, the paper emphasises the importance of focussing on return profit as the evaluation metric, rather than accuracy. Extensive experimental studies conducted on realistic Yahoo Finance data sets validate the effectiveness of our implemented prediction mechanisms. Furthermore, empirical evidence suggests that employing the use of three-value labels yields superior accuracy performance compared to traditional two-value labels, as it helps reduce the number of orders placed.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Heart rate variability (HRV)-based machine learning models hold promise for real-world vigilance evaluation, yet their real-time applicability is limited by lengthy feature extraction times and reliance on subjective benchmarks. This study aimed to improve the objectivity and efficiency of HRV-based vigilance evaluation by associating HRV and behavior metrics through a sliding-window approach. METHODS: Forty-four healthy adults underwent psychomotor vigilance tasks under both well-rested and sleep-deprived conditions, with simultaneous electrocardiogram recording. A sliding-window approach (30s length, 10s step) was used for HRV feature extraction and behavior assessment. Repeated-measures ANOVA was used to examine how HRV related to objective vigilance levels. Stability selection technique was applied for feature selection, and the vigilance ground truth-high (fastest 40%), intermediate (middle 20%), and low (slowest 40%)-were determined based on each participant's range of performance. Four machine-learning classifiers-k-nearest neighbours, support vector machine (SVM), AdaBoost, and random forest-were trained and tested using cross-validation. RESULTS: Fluctuated vigilance performance indicated pronounced state instability, particularly after sleep deprivation. Temporary decrements in performance were associated with a decrease in heart rate and an increase in time-domain heart rate variability. SVM achieved the best performance, with a cross-validated accuracy of 89% for binary classification of high versus low vigilance epochs. Overall accuracy dropped to 72% for three-class classification in leave-one-participant-out cross-validation, but SVM maintained a precision of 84% in identifying low-vigilance epochs. CONCLUSIONS: Sliding-window-based HRV metrics would effectively capture the fluctuations in vigilance during task execution, enabling more timely and accurate detection of performance decrement.

ABSTRACT

The accurate prediction of chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentration in coastal waters is essential to coastal economies and ecosystems as it serves as the key indicator of harmful algal blooms. Although powerful machine learning methods have made strides in forecasting chl-a concentrations, there remains a gap in effectively modeling the dynamic temporal patterns and dealing with data noise and unreliability. To wiggle out of quagmires, we introduce an innovative deep learning prediction model (termed ChloroFormer) by integrating Transformer networks with Fourier analysis within a decomposition architecture, utilizing coastal in-situ data from two distinct study areas. Our proposed model exhibits superior capabilities in capturing both short-term and middle-term dependency patterns in chl-a concentrations, surpassing the performance of six other deep learning models in multistep-ahead predictive accuracy. Particularly in scenarios involving extreme and frequent blooms, our proposed model shows exceptional predictive performance, especially in accurately forecasting peak chl-a concentrations. Further validation through Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests attests that our model not only replicates the actual dynamics of chl-a concentrations but also preserves the distribution of observation data, showcasing its robustness and reliability. The presented deep learning model addresses the critical need for accurate prediction on chl-a concentrations, facilitating the exploration of marine observations with complex dynamic temporal patterns, thereby supporting marine conservation and policy-making in coastal areas.

ABSTRACT

When performing synchronous hand and foot movements, the way the limbs are synchronized differs depending on the mode of control. When performed in a reaction time (RT) paradigm (reactive control), EMG onsets become synchronized resulting in asynchronous displacement onset. However, when the same movement is performed as an anticipation-timing task (predictive control), displacement onset is synchronized by unconsciously introducing a small delay between EMG onsets. The present experiment investigated the reprogramming costs associated with switching between predictive and reaction control modes. Participants (N = 12, 6F) were asked to simultaneously lift their right heel and right hand in an anticipation-timing task when a rotating clock hand reached a specified target. On some trials, an auditory stimulus was presented either 250 ms or 500 ms before the target and participants were instructed to execute the synchronous movement as quickly as possible after the signal (i.e., switch to reactive mode). Results showed that when the auditory stimulus was delivered 250 ms before the target, participants were unable to switch to a reactive control mode but did switch when the auditory stimulus was presented 500 ms before the target. As expected, the RT on switch trials was substantially longer (∼230 ms) than a simple RT control condition but was also significantly longer (∼130 ms) than a choice RT control condition. These results indicate that switching between control modes for a task involving the same musculature incurs reprogramming costs that are even greater than the time required to program the response de novo.

ABSTRACT

Background: Acute malnutrition is a major global public health problem, particularly in low-and middle-income countries. A targeted supplementary feeding program is an approach recommended to address moderate acute malnutrition in food-insecure settings. Preventing and treating moderate acute malnutrition requires identifying factors shown to affect the treatment outcome and duration of stay on treatment. This study aimed to determine the time to recovery from moderate acute malnutrition and its predictors among children aged 6-59 months in Fedis Woreda East Hararghe Zone, Eastern Ethiopia, from January 1 to December 31, 2022. Methods: A facility-based retrospective cohort study was conducted on 567 children with moderate acute malnutrition in Fedis Woreda, East Hararghe Zone, eastern Ethiopia. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed, and data was collected using a structured checklist. Data were extracted from randomly selected records after obtaining ethical clearance. Data were cleaned, coded, entered into EpiData 4.6, and analyzed using STATA/SE version 14. Descriptive statistics and analytic analysis schemes, including bivariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards models, were conducted, and finally, statistical significance was considered at p < 0.05. Results: The overall median time to recovery was 16 weeks. The major predicting factors for time to recovery among children aged 6-59 months were admission with a mid-upper arm circumference of 12.1-12.4 centimeters (AHR = 1.02, 95% CI: 1.01-1.19), access to transportation to facilities (AHR = 0.62, 95% CI: 0.36-0.81), children using specialized nutritious foods (RUSF; AHR = 1.96, 95% CI: 1.36-3.11), and children who had diarrhea (AHR = 0.4, 95% CI: 0.31-0.71). Conclusion: The study found a median recovery time of 16 weeks for children with targeted supplementary feeding. Significant predictors included admission with a MUAC of 12.1-12.4 centimeters, transportation access, RUSF use, and the presence of diarrhea. These findings highlighted the importance of these factors in determining and improving recovery from moderate-acute malnutrition.

Introduction: There are insufficient data regarding the variables influencing recovery times, despite the accessible outpatient therapy program (OTP) bringing services for treating severe acute malnutrition (SAM) closer to the community. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the factors influencing the recovery duration in children with uncomplicated SAM between the ages of 6 and 59 months who were attending an OTP in North Wollo, northern Ethiopia. Methods: From February 2021 to July 2021, 356 children, ages 6-59 months, enrolled in a facility-based prospective cohort study. An interviewer administered a semi-structured questionnaire once a week to acquire anthropometric measures. The data were imported into Stata version 14.2 for analysis from EPI data entry version 4.6.06. The time to recovery for each attribute was determined using a log-rank test, a survival curve, and a Kaplan-Meier estimate of the median time to recovery. The Cox Proportional-Hazards Model was used to identify independent predictors of recovery time; statistical significance was indicated at 95% CI and a p-value of 0.05. Results: With a recovery rate of 74.7%, the median recovery period was 56 days. Frequency of growth monitoring and promotion (GMP) service utilization [AHR = 1.622 (95% CI: 1.052-2.130)], cough [AHR = 0.385 (95% CI: 0.176-0.843)], maternal delivery at health center [AHR = 1.448 (95% CI: 1.023-2.050)], and maternal literacy [AHR = 1.445 (95% CI: 1.019-2.058)] were determinants of time to recovery. Conclusion: The median recovery period was 56 days with a recovery rate of 74.7%. Regular utilization of GMP services, maternal delivery at the health center, and cough at admission were independent predictors for this study. As a result, there should be a greater emphasis on the importance of girls' (future mothers') education and nutrition counseling, particularly the integration of GMP service components into institutional delivery/for girls/women who have received little education on how to improve time to recovery and the success of the OTP.
