ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This crossover study design aimed to assess hemodynamic, cardiac autonomic, and vascular responses to high-intensity interval (HIIE) vs moderate-intensity continuous exercise (MICE) in older individuals with hypertension. METHODS: Twenty (67 ± 7 y) older individuals with hypertension were randomly assigned to perform HIIE, MICE, or control (CON) sessions in the heated swimming pool (30-32°C). Blood pressure (BP), arterial stiffness, endothelial reactivity, and heart rate variability (HRV) were measured pre, post, and 45 min (recovery) after each intervention followed by 24-h ambulatory BP and HRV. RESULTS: One single aerobic exercise session was not effective to provoke post-exercise hypotension and vascular improvements. HIIE was superior to MICE and CON to increasing parasympathetic modulation at post and recovery. Exercise sessions showed to disturb the autonomic system at nighttime compared to CON. CONCLUSIONS: These results may have important implications in water-based therapy and the elderly with hypertension.

ABSTRACT

Descriptive, quasi experimental study with pre and post-test, which aimed to investigate the effects of Water Pilates (PA) on urinary incontinence, genital self-image and sexual function of elderly women. The sample consisted of seventeen elderly women aged 60 years or over, from a city in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. The International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire -Short Form (ICIQ-SF) was used as instruments to assess the impact of UI in quality of life and qualify urinary loss, the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) to assess sexual function and Female Genital Self-Image Scale (FGSIS) to assess women's perception of their own genitalia. The PA protocol was performed twice a week for 50 minutes performed for eight weeks, totaling 16 sessions. The protocol was divided into warm-up, strengthening exercises and stretching. It was observed that the sample was composed ofyoung elderly women (69.5 ± 5.9 years), overweight and with low FSFI and FGSIS scores. There was no significant change in the mean values before and after the intervention of the ICIQ-SF, FGSIS and FSFI scores. It was concluded that the PA method had no effect on urinary loss, sexual function and genital self-image.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Few studies have reported the clinical effect of aquatic therapy in stroke rehabilitation. Therefore, we performed a protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness of aquatic therapy for individuals affected by strokes. METHODS: This protocol of systematic review and meta-analysis has been drafted under the guidance of the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses protocols. This study will use the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED), China Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), Wanfang Database, and Ongoing Clinical Trials Database. Quality assessment of the included studies was evaluated using the Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool. We performed the meta-analysis by RevMan 5.4 software. RESULTS: The results of this systematic review and meta-analysis will be published in a peer-reviewed journal.
