ABSTRACT

Two new species of Urocleidoides are described from the gills of Pseudanos trimaculatus (Characiformes: Anostomidae) from the coastal drainages of the Eastern Amazon, Brazil. Urocleidoides itabocaensis n. sp. is characterized by having a sclerotized, tubular, sigmoid male copulatory organ (MCO), a circular sclerotized tandem brim associated with the base of the MCO; an accessory piece articulated with the MCO, a V-shaped, divided into two subunits, distal subunit spoon-shaped; and a vaginal pore dextroventral with opening marginal. Urocleidoides omphalocleithrum n. sp. is characterized by presenting a C-shaped or sigmoid MCO; an accessory piece articulated with the MCO, L-shaped, divided into two subunits, distal subunit gutter-shaped; a vaginal pore dextroventral with opening marginal; and a ventral bar broadly V-shaped, with anteromedial projection. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on partial 28S rDNA and COI mtDNA genes indicate that U. itabocaensis n. sp. and U. omphalocleithrum n. sp. are closely related and appear as a sister group to other Urocleidoides species (U. paradoxus, U. digitabulum and U. sinus) parasitizing anostomid fishes. This study represents the first record of monogenoids from the gills of P. trimaculatus for the Eastern Amazon.

ABSTRACT

Transporting live fish is a common practice in fish farming, and is certainly one of the main problems that affect fish homeostasis. In this scenario, the use of natural additives has shown promise in improving fish resistance to adverse situations. This study aimed to assess the impact of Ocimum gratissimum L. essential oil (OGEO) on water quality, hematological parameters, and residue levels in the plasma, fillet, and liver of juvenile piraputanga (Brycon hilarii) during a two-hour transportation period. The fish were divided into plastic bags (4 L) and exposed to three different OGEO concentrations (10, 20, and 30 mg L-1), while a control group received no OGEO (three repetitions each). After the two-hour transportation, blood samples were collected, as well as portions of the fillet and liver for quantifying essential oil compounds, which were also measured in the plasma. Oxygen levels remained high throughout the transportation period, in all groups, while the pH decreased. Hemoglobin, MCHC, and MCH increased in fish exposed to OGEO concentrations of 20 and 30 mg L-1, compared to the control group. However, lymphocyte counts and the concentrations of essential oil compounds in plasma, fillet, and liver increased with higher OGEO concentrations. The use of 10 mg L-1 OGEO in the two-hour transport water is promising to ensure the survival and well-being of Brycon hilarii juveniles (weighing 16 g), showing to be safe and effective. The residual concentration of eugenol the major compound of OGEO in the fillet remains below the maximum limit of the recommended daily intake.

ABSTRACT

The present paper comprises a systematic survey of trematodes found in 13 species of freshwater fishes in Venezuela collected in 1992, 1996 and 2001. The following 15 trematode species were recorded: Adults: Genarchella venezuelaensis sp. n., Thometrema dissimilis sp. n., Megacoelium spinicavum Thatcher et Varella, 1981, Doradamphistoma bacuense Thatcher, 1999, Crassicutis cichlasomae Manter, 1936, Parspina carapo Ostrowski de Núñez, Arredonto et Gil de Pertierra, 2011, Phyllodistomoides hoplerythrini sp. n. Larvae (metacercariae): Clinostomatopsis sorbens (Braun, 1899), Clinostomum marginatum (Rudolphi, 1819), C. detruncatum Braun, 1899, Ithyoclinostomum dimorphum (Diesing, 1850), Odhneriotrema microcephala (Travassos, 1922), Tylodelphys sp., Posthodiplostomum sp., Sphincterodiplostomum sp. All these parasites are reported from Venezuela for the first time and many of these findings represent new host records. The new species G. venezuelaensis sp. n., T. dissimilis sp. n. and P. hoplerythrini sp. n. were collected from the accessory respiratory organ of Loricariichthys brunneus (Hancock) (Loricariidae), from the stomach of Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus (Spix et Agassiz) (Erythrinidae) and from the intestine of H. unitaeniatus, respectively. All parasites are briefly described and illustrated and problems concerning their morphology, taxonomy, hosts and geographical distribution are discussed. Megacoelium spinispecum Thatcher et Varella, 1981 is considered a junior synonym of M. spinicavum Thatcher et Varella, 1981, and Crassicutis opisthoseminis Bravo-Hollis et Arroyo, 1962 as a junior synonym of C. cichlasomae Manter, 1936.

ABSTRACT

Preservation of fish as diet ingredient is challenging in many tropical regions due to poor socioeconomic conditions and lack of freezing facilities. So, alternative preservation techniques could be viable to address the issue. The present study evaluated the effect of brine salting (15% w/v) prior to drying at different temperatures on the nutrient profiles of tambaqui fish (Colossoma macropomum). Whole fish samples (n = 48; 792 ± 16 g; 8 months old) were grouped into two as brine-salted and non-salted, and treated at seven different drying temperatures of 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60°C for a period of 23 h each. To evaluate the impact of Maillard reaction, reactive lysine was also quantified. Drying temperature had no effect on the evaluated macro- and micro-nutrients of tambaqui fish (P > 0.05) while brining reduced the overall protein concentration by 6% (58.8 to 55.4 g/100 g DM; P = 0.004). Brining significantly reduced many amino acids: taurine by 56% (7.1 to 3.1 g/kg; P < 0.001), methionine 17% (14.7 to 12.1 g/kg; P < 0.001), cysteine 11% (5.1 to 4.4 g/kg, P = 0.016), and reactive lysine 11% (52.0 to 46.4 g/kg; P = 0.004). However, alanine, arginine, and serine were not affected by brining (P > 0.05). Brining also reduced the concentrations of Se by 14% (149 to 128 µg/kg DM; P = 0.020), iodine 38% (604 to 373 µg/kg DM; P = 0.020), K 42% (9.71 to 5.61 g/kg DM; P < 0.001) and Mg 18% (1.32 to 1.10 g/kg DM; P = < 0.001) versus an anticipated vast increase in Na by 744% (2.70 to 22.90 g/kg DM; P < 0.001) and ash 28% (12.4 to 16.0 g/100g DM; P < 0.001) concentration. Neither brining nor drying temperature induced changes in % lysine reactivity and fat content of tambaqui fish (P > 0.05). Agreeably, results of multivariate analysis showed a negative association between brining, Na, and ash on one side of the component and most other nutrients on the other component. In conclusion, drying without brining may better preserve the nutritive value of tambaqui fish. However, as a practical remark to the industry sector, it is recommended that the final product may further evaluated for any pathogen of economic or public health importance.

ABSTRACT

Cyphocharax magdalenae, a Colombian freshwater fish species, plays a vital role in nutrients distribution and serves as a significant food source for other fish species and local fishing communities. Considered a short-distance migratory species, C. magdalenae populations face substantial extinction risk due to human activities impacting their habitats. To address the lack of knowledge on genetic diversity and population structure, this study used next-generation sequencing technology to develop species-specific microsatellite loci and conducted a population genetics analysis of C. magdalenae in the middle and lower sections of the Cauca River, Colombia. Out of 30 pairs of microsatellite primers evaluated in 324 individuals, 14 loci were found to be polymorphic, at linkage equilibrium and, in at least one population, their genotypic frequencies were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Results showed high genetic diversity levels compared to other neotropical Characiformes, with inbreeding coefficients similar to those reported for phylogenetically related species. Moreover, C. magdalenae exhibits seasonal population structure (rainy-dry) consisting of two genetic stocks showing bottleneck signals and high effective population sizes. This information is essential for understanding the current species genetics and developing future management programs for this fishery resource.

ABSTRACT

Neotropical fish amphistomes represent a highly diverse group within the Paramphistomoidea, with wide distribution across major South American hydrological drainages. However, the limited molecular characterization of these taxa has impeded a comprehensive assessment of their evolutionary relationships and the systematic relevance of morphological features in classification schemes. Our study, based on the critical evaluation of the type material of both nominal species of Zonocotyle (type genus of the monotypic Zonocotylidae), and newly collected specimens of Zonocotyle bicaecata from Steindachnerina insculpta (Curimatidae) in the Upper Paraná River basin, Brazil, presents a morphological reappraisal of Z. bicaecata and provides molecular data (28S rDNA, ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region, and COI mtDNA) to assess its phylogenetic relationships. Our phylogenetic analyses confirm this species belongs to the Paramphistomoidea. The most comprehensive analyses (based on 28S and COI) further indicate a close relationship with other fish amphistomes from the Neotropical region. Additionally, we emphasized the necessity for a new classification within Paramphistomoidea and briefly discussed the host range of Zonocotyle among curimatid fish hosts.

ABSTRACT

The morphological characterisation of Diplozoidae spp. is highly reliant on the details of the sclerotised components of the hooks and clamps in the haptor. Only six species of Paradiplozoon (Diplozoinae) have been described from Africa, four of which have adequate morphological and even comparative ITS2 rDNA data available. However, the descriptions of Paradiplozoon ghanense (Thomas, 1957) and Paradiplozoon aegyptense (Fischthal & Kuntz, 1963) lack essential taxonomic information, specifically the details for their haptoral sclerites. As such, all available material from museum collections for these two species were studied using light microscopy to supplement the original morphometric descriptions. The holotype and paratypes of P. aegyptense were studied, but only voucher material for P. ghanense could be sourced. However, this voucher material for P. ghanense was deposited by the species authority and bore a striking resemblance to the illustrations and collection details from the original description. They were thus identified as the type series for the taxon, with a lectotype and paralectotype designated. Both P. ghanense and P. aegyptense could be readily distinguished from other taxa based on the supplementary data generated here, supporting their distinctness. The haptoral sclerites of P. aegyptense were most similar to those of Paradiplozoon krugerense Dos Santos & Avenant-Oldewage, 2016, also described from Labeo spp., while the sclerites of P. ghanense were most similar to Paradiplozoon bingolense Civánová, Koyun & Koubková, 2013 and Paradiplozoon iraqense Al-Nasiri & Balbuena, 2016. Additionally, a voucher of P. aegyptense collected from the alestid type host of P. ghanense was reidentified as the latter species here. This greatly simplified the known host specificity for Paradiplozoon spp. in Africa, with P. aegyptense now exclusively reported from Cypriniformes (Cyprinidae and Danionidae), and P. ghanense restricted to Characiformes (Alestidae). The occurrence of all diplozoids from non-cyprinoid hosts was also investigated and several records of diplozoids occurring on non-cyprinoid hosts were collated and scrutinised. Excluding the two instances of diplozoids described and exclusively occurring on Characiformes fishes (P. ghanense and Paradiplozoon tetragonopterini (Sterba, 1957)), most other non-cyprinoid collections appear sporadic and unsubstantiated, but warrant further investigation supported by diligent taxonomic data. Even though the morphometric descriptions of both P. ghanense and P. aegyptense were fully reported on here, additional material will be needed to study their genetic profiles and phylogeny.

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the median lethal concentration of silver nanoparticles and their effects in fish tambaqui Colossoma macropomum. Therefore, an acute toxicity assay was carried out in completely randomized design evaluating six different concentrations of silver nanoparticles on blood parameters of tambaqui. The silver nanoparticles were produced by chemical reduction with polyvinyl alcohol (AgNP-PVA). The lethal concentration 50% (LC50) was estimated using probit regression. The blood was collected, analyzed and the data were submitted to T-test (dying x surviving fish) and Tukey test (surviving fish). An increase in glucose, hematocrit, total plasma protein, hemoglobin, erythrocytes, leukocytes, monocytes, and neutrophils as well as reduced MCV (mean corpuscular volume) in dying fish compared to surviving fish were observed. Survived fish exposed to 187.5 µg/L showed an increase in hematocrit, MCV, and MCH and a reduction in erythrocytes, total numbers of leukocyte, thrombocyte, lymphocyte, and neutrophil. The fish exposed to concentrations below 125 µg/L, had returned the blood parameter to baselines compared to control. The estimated LC50 was 165.09 µg/L and was classified as highly toxic for the fish tambaqui. In higher concentrations, it causes an acute respiratory toxicity, but in concentrations below 125 µg/L, the fish can adapt to the stressing agent.

ABSTRACT

Several studies highlighted the complexity of mixing pesticides present in Amazonian aquatic environments today. There is evidence that indicates that ongoing climate change can alter the pattern of pesticide use, increasing the concentration and frequency of pesticide applications. It is known that the combination of thermal and chemical stress can induce interactive effects in aquatic biota, which accentuates cell and molecular damage. However, considering that the effects of climate change go beyond the increase in temperature the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of climate change scenarios proposed by 6 th IPCC report and a mixture of pesticides on the tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum). The hypothesis of this study is that the negative effects will be accentuated by the combination of an extreme climate changes scenario and a mixture of pesticides. To test the hypothesis, juvenile tambaqui were exposed to a combination of four pesticides (chlorpyrifos, malathion, carbendazim and atrazine) in two scenarios, one that simulates current environmental conditions and another that predicted the environmental scenario for the year 2100. Fish were subjected to the experimental conditions for 96 h. At the end of the experiment, samples of blood, gills, liver, brain, and muscle were obtained for hematological, genotoxic, biochemical, and histopathological analyses. The results demonstrate that environmentally realistic concentrations of pesticides, when mixed, can alter the biochemical responses of tambaqui. The extreme scenario promotes hematological adjustments, but impairs branchial antioxidant enzymes. There is an interaction between the mixture of pesticides and the extreme scenario, accentuating liver tissue damage, which demonstrates that even increased activity of antioxidant and biotransformation enzymes were not sufficient to prevent liver damage.

ABSTRACT

The present study integrates molecular and morphological data to support the proposal of new species of Telethecium Kritsky, Van Every & Boeger, 1996 and Diaphorocleidus Jogunoori, Kritsky & Venkatanarasaiah, 2004 from the nasal cavities of Bryconops melanurus (Bloch) of the coastal drainages of the Eastern Amazon. Telethecium tiquira sp. n. is characterized by possessing a male copulatory organ (MCO) with two circular sclerotized brims on the base, a coiled tubular shaft having 1 counterclockwise rings, an accessory piece with enlarged base, pincer-shaped at the distal portion; a sclerotized calyx-shaped vaginal vestibule, and hooks with proximal shank dilatation comprising 3/4 of the shank length. Also, Telethecium tiquira sp. n. can be easily distinguished from other species of the genus by the absence of a protruding bag located at the level of the copulatory complex. Diaphorocleidus forficata sp. n. is characterized by having a MCO with two counterclockwise rings, circular sclerotized tandem brim associated with the base of the MCO; accessory piece non-articulated with the MCO, bifurcate, pincer-shaped; vaginal pore sinistral-ventral with opening marginal, vaginal canal sclerotized, elongated, comprising one loop in the proximal portion before entering to the seminal receptacle; ventral anchor with shaft elongated and evenly curved on the axis; point short and slightly curved, and hooks similar in shape and size, hooks with proximal dilatation comprising approximately of the shank length. Furthermore, D. forficata sp. n. is supported by phylogenetic analysis based on sequences of the partial 28S rDNA gene, which placed D. forficata sp. n. in a well-supported clade of Diaphorocleidus spp. of characiform fishes. Thus, the two new species described here expand our knowledge about the diversity of monopisthocotylan parasites from the nasal cavities of Neotropical fishes. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the biodiversity of the region and highlight the importance of further research in this area.

During a study conducted on the helminth fauna of fishes in the middle Munim River basin, State of Maranho, northeastern Brazil, three species (two new) of Diaphorocleidus Jogunoori, Kritsky & Venkatanarasaiah, 2004 are reported from the gills of the piaba Bryconops cf. affinis (Iguanodectidae): Diaphorocleidus affinis (Mizelle, Kritsky & Crane, 1968), D. forcipiformis n. sp. and D. munimensis n. sp. New morphological data, drawings, and geographic distribution were provided for D. affinis. Diaphorocleidus forcipiformis n. sp. is characterized by a male copulatory organ with 2 rings counterclockwise and base forming a small tube with two circular flanges and accessory piece bifurcated, claw-shaped, with parts similar in shape and size, one of them distally bifid. Diaphorocleidus munimensis n. sp. is differentiated by the accessory piece, which is composed of two large pieces, united in their proximal part, claw-shaped, and distally hooked. The findings of this initial survey on the helminth parasites of fishes in this area emphasize the importance of carrying out comparable surveys on other fish species. Such surveys may lead to the identification of unknown species or new occurrences.

ABSTRACT

Two previously undescribed myxozoan species, Henneguya sardellae sp. n. and H. margaritae sp. n., found infecting connective tissues of the Neotropical characid fish Oligosarcus jenynsii (Günther) from Argentina are morphologically and molecularly characterised. Mature spores of H. sardellae sp. n. are ellipsoid, with two, straight and visibly fused caudal appendages cleaved at its blunt terminal end; measuring 33.5 ± 1.2 (30.9-35.5) µm in total length, spore body 17.5 ± 0.6 (16.3-18.6) µm, 7.8 ± 0.4 (7.0-8.8) µm wide and 6.9 ± 0.2 (6.6-7.2) µm thick, with two elongated, unequally-sized polar capsules situated at anterior end, and 11-13 turns of polar tubules. Mature spores of H. margaritae sp. n. are pyriform, with two caudal appendages visible fused together and much longer than spore body, with unequal endings; measuring 35.9 ± 2.8 (29.2-40.7) µm in total length, spore body 11.5 ± 0.9 (9.2-13.0) µm long, 5.8 ± 0.4 (5.1-6.7) µm wide and 5.5 ± 0.2 (5.1-5.8) µm thick, with two polar capsules similar in size, pyriform polar capsules containing polar tubules with 4-5 coils. Both species showed a membraneous sheath surrounding the spore body and caudal appendages; in H. sardellae sp. n. this feature can deploy laterally. Phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rDNA sequences showed that H. sardellae sp. n. and H. margaritae sp. n. clustered with other myxobolids parasitising Characiformes in Brazil, Cichliformes in Mexico and Cyprinodontiformes in Mexico and the United States. The description of these two new species of Henneguya as the first described species of the genus that parasitise freshwater fish in Argentina highlights the importance of further research on the diversity and distribution of myxozoans in this region.

ABSTRACT

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of fasting on responses of oxidative biomarkers and antioxidant defenses using different organs and tissues of Colossoma macropomum. The fish were divided into two groups: fed (control) and fasting (7 days). After 7 days, the fish were sampled for assessment of oxidative stress biomarkers (MDA-lipid peroxidation and PCO-protein carbonyl) and antioxidant defenses (SOD-superoxide dismutase; CAT-catalase; GPX-glutathione peroxidase; and GST-glutathione-S -transferase) in the liver, intestine, gills, muscle, brain, and plasma. The results showed an increase in MDA, PCO, SOD, and GPX concentrations in the liver and intestine of fasting fish. In contrast, in the branchial tissue, there was a reduction in the activity of SOD and CAT enzymes in fasting fish. There was also a reduction in CAT activity in the muscle of fasting fish, while in the brain, there were no changes in oxidative stress biomarkers. Plasma showed a relatively low antioxidant response. In conclusion, our results confirm that a 7-day fasting period induced tissue-specific antioxidant responses, but the increase in antioxidant responses was only for the SOD and GPX enzymes of the liver and intestine. Additionally, the liver and intestine were the most responsive tissues, whereas the plasma was the least sensitive to oxidative stress.

ABSTRACT

The early development of the freshwater fish Rhytiodus microlepis is characterized by the description of external morphological, meristic, and morphometric changes, as well as the growth patterns, thereby establishing a reference for the identification of its larvae and juveniles. Specimens were collected from the Amazon river channel and floodplain. Ninety-seven individuals were analysed with standard length varying between 4.31 and 79.23 mm. Rhytiodus microlepis larvae are altricial, with an elongated and fusiform body, anal opening reaching the middle region of the body, and simple nostrils becoming double and tubular during development. The pigments vary from one to two chromatophores in the dorsal region of the head in pre-flexion and flexion, but later the pigmentation pattern intensifies, transverse bands appear along the body, and a conspicuous spot appears in the basal region of the caudal fin. The total number of myomeres ranges from 49 to 50. During the transition from larval (post-flexion) to the juvenile periods, the most significant anatomical changes occur, such as the presence of all fins and increased body pigmentation. Integrated myomere count and pigmentation pattern are effective for the correct identification of the initial life stages of R. microlepis from the Amazon basin. Our results expand the knowledge about the early life history of Neotropical freshwater fish species.

ABSTRACT

Biometric evaluations are essential to determine the growth characteristics related to the weight and length of fish. This study aimed to determine the growth patterns of juvenile piraputangas (Brycon hilarii) produced in hapas within an excavated pond. The piraputangas were anesthetized and micro-chipped and their biometric characteristics were measured. Subsequently, the fish were distributed in six hapas of eight m3 at the density of 20 fish/hapa, totaling 120 animals. During the experimental period six months, the fish were fed twice (5% of the biomass) a day. Every 30 days, all fish were sampled to measure the biometric characteristics of body weight (g); standard length; total length; head height; head length; body height and body width (cm). The calculations of the weight ratio with the biometric characteristics were determined using allometric equation and estimated by linear regression according to the equation log Y = log a + b log X. All tested relationships were significant by the Student t-test (p < 0.05). Allometric growth was positive for: weight x total length; standard weight x length; weight x head height; weight x head length and weight x body height. The relative condition factor of piraputangas observed in this study was 1.00. The study provided information on the allometric parameters of juvenile Brycon hilarii produced in hapas, and the relative condition factor indicated good growth conditions for piraputangas with positive allometric growth.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we analyzed the altitudinal distribution and body condition of the juvenile migratory fish Megaleporinus obtusidens and Salminus brasiliensis in the Uruguay River, a South American subtropical river. We used the presence/absence data and condition factor (K) of juveniles as indicators to try to characterize some recruitment patterns of migratory fish in the main channel of the Uruguay River. Gillnet sampling was conducted during two reproductive years, 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 (November and March of each reproductive year), in three Uruguay River stretches at different levels of altitude. The nets remained in the water for 10-12 hours per night or day for 10 days during each field trip (NOV-15, MAR-16, NOV-16, and MAR-17). The abundance of M. obtusidens juveniles were similar between the two reproductive years, whereas S. brasiliensis capture was higher during the 2015-2016 reproductive year. The probability of finding M. obtusidens juveniles in the Uruguay River was negatively correlated (p < 0.05) with the altitudinal gradient of the sampling points, as shown by the GLM model. For S. brasiliensis, the logit model indicated a non-significant probabilistic relationship (p > 0.05) between the presence of juveniles of this fish species and the altitude gradient. Regarding the body condition of juveniles, the water quality of the sampling points did not affect the juvenile condition factor for either species; however, a positive relationship (p < 0.05) was found with the water level for both species, even with an adjusted R2 of 0.13 for M. obtusidens and 0.48 to S. brasiliensis. Altitude gradient and water level were factors that may affect the juvenile distribution and body condition of these species, respectively, in the Uruguay River. Therefore, this information can be used in hydropower generation policies to conserve migratory fish populations in the Uruguay River Basin.

ABSTRACT

Why do some clades diversify more than others? And what are the roles of abiotic and biotic factors in driving such unequal diversification? To explore this, Burns et al. (2024) investigate variation in body morphology in a group of freshwater fish, Characiformes, across South America and Africa. They find that habitat features such as slope, elevation, and flow rates have played a major role in the diversification of morphological variation in the Characiformes. The Neotropical lineages residing in significantly more diverse slope and elevation habitats were found to display more body shape diversity than African lineages. The authors also report that competition might have limited the morphological variation in African Characiformes compared to the Neotropical lineages. This study highlights the importance of exploring both abiotic and biotic factors when examining diversification.

INTRODUCTION: Two new dactylogyrid monogeneans, Anacanthorus cultro n. sp. and Notozothecium palometae n. sp., are described based on specimens collected from the gill filaments of Mylossoma albiscopum (Cope, 1872) (Characiformes: Serrasalmidae), a pelagic and herbivore teleost collected in the Tigre river, Loreto, Peru. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Some monogeneans were stained with Gomori's trichrome and mounted in Canada Balsam to determine internal soft structures. Others were cleared in Hoyer's medium for the study of sclerotized structures. Drawings were made using a drawing tube and a microprojector. RESULTS: Anacanthorus cultro n. sp. is characterized by the presence of a rod-shaped male copulatory organ (MCO) lacking featherlike structures, and a knife-shaped accessory piece with a submedial knob. Notozothecium palometae n. sp. can be distinguished from all congeners by its MCO with a subbasal spur and an accessory piece with inverted hammer shaped. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first data on the parasites of M. albiscopum, a popular fish in local markets. Anacanthorus cultro n. sp. is the twenty-fifth documented species of the genus in Peru, while N. palometae n. sp. represents the seventh species of the genus known to infect freshwater fish species in Peru.

ABSTRACT

Diclofenac (DCF) and ibuprofen (IBU) are pharmaceutical compounds frequently detected in aquatic compartments worldwide. Several hazard effects including developmental abnormalities and redox balance impairment have been elucidated in aquatic species, but multiple endocrine evaluations are scarce. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the disruptive physiological effects and toxicity of DCF and IBU isolated and combined, using females of the native freshwater teleost Astyanax lacustris. In regards to NSAIDs bioavailability, the results showed absence of degradation of IBU and DCF after 7 days of exposure. IBU LC50 for A. lacustris was 137 mgL-1 and females exposed to IBU isolated increased thyroxine (T4) concentration at 24 h and decreased after 96 h; DCF exposure decreased triiodothyronine (T3) concentration at 96 h. Circulating levels of 17ß-estradiol (E2), cortisol (F) and testosterone (T) were not affected by any treatment. HPG and HPI axis genes fshß, pomc and vtg were upregulated after 24 h of IBU exposure, and dio2 was downregulated in DCF fish exposed group after 96 h compared to the mixture. Protein concentration was reduced in muscle and increased in the liver by DCF and mixtures exposures at 24 h; while liver lipids were increased in the mixture groups after 96 h. The study point out the capacity of NSAIDs to affect endocrine endpoints in A. lacustris females and induce changes in energetic substrate content after acute exposure to isolated and mixed NSAIDs treatments. Lastly, the present investigation brings new insights into the toxicity and endocrine disruptive activity of NSAIDs in Latin America teleost species and the aquatic environment.

ABSTRACT

Bryconops Kner, 1858, includes two well defined subgenera based on morphological evidence, with each containing at least one species (B. (Bryconops) caudomaculatus and B. (Creatochanes) melanurus) with a very wide distribution, within which regional populations present color variations. To test if phenotypic variation is related to cladogenetic events, we performed tests for phylogenetic independence and determined the strength of convergence for color characters in relation to water type, as the variation between clear, black and white waters is considered to be one of the major driving forces in the evolution of Amazonian fishes. Color characters for fins above the median line of the body were generally found to be independent from phylogeny and the Wheatsheaf test strongly supports convergence of the dorsal fin color between populations of species in the same type of water, with a similar trend suggested for the color of the dorsal lobe of the caudal fin. This means that simple color characters cannot necessarily be relied upon for taxonomic revisions of the genus as local phenotypic variants may represent environmentally determined plasticity or convergent evolution. Further studies are required to determine the validity of these characters.
