ABSTRACT

(1) Background: This study investigated the effects of caffeinated chewing gum on the basketball-specific performance of trained basketball players. A double-blind, randomized crossover design was employed. (2) Methods: Fifteen participants (age: 20.9 ± 1.0 years; height: 180.9 ± 5.4 cm; mass: 77.2 ± 7.5 kg; training age: 8.2 ± 0.3 years) were recruited and divided into a caffeine trial (CAF) and placebo trial (PL). The participants in the CAF trial chewed gum containing 3 mg/kg of caffeine for 10 min, while those in the PL trial chewed a placebo gum without caffeine. Following a 15 min rest, all the participants completed basketball-specific performance tests. (3) Results: The free throw accuracy for the CAF trial was significantly higher than that for the PL trial (CAF: 79.0 ± 4.31%; PL: 73.0 ± 9.16%; p = 0.012; Cohen's d = 0.94). Additionally, the CAF trial demonstrated significantly better performance in the 20 m segmented dash (CAF: 2.94 ± 1.12 s; PL: 3.13 ± 0.10 s; p < 0.001; Cohen's d =1.8) and squats (p < 0.05), and exhibited lower fatigue indexes (CAF: 3.6 ± 1.6%; PL: 5.2 ± 1.6%; p = 0.009; Cohen's d =1.0). (4) Conclusions: These findings suggest that chewing gum containing 3 mg/kg of caffeine offers moderate-to-large improvements in key performance aspects relevant to professionally trained basketball players.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Chewing gums containing antiseptics or other antimicrobial substances may be effective in reducing plaque and gingivitis. Therefore, the aim of this randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial was to investigate the efficacy of a novel antimicrobial chewing gum containing essential oils (cinnamon, lemon, peppermint) and extracts on reduction of dental plaque and gingivitis as well as on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in adolescent orthodontic patients. MATERIALS: 52 patients (11-22 years of age) were randomly assigned to use a test chewing gum (COVIDGUM, Clevergum) or a commercially available control chewing gum over a period of 10 days. Approximal plaque index (API), papillary bleeding index (PBI) and an OHRQoL questionnaire for children (COHIP-G19) were assessed at baseline (BL), after 10 days (10d) and 30 days (30d). In addition, oral health and oral hygiene related questions of the COHIP-G19 questionnaire were evaluated separately in subscales at each timepoint. Data were analyzed using non-parametrical statistical procedures (α = 0.05). RESULTS: API and PBI decreased significantly over time from BL to 10d and from BL to 30d in both groups, without significant differences between the groups. In both groups, the COHIP-G19 score, oral health subscale and oral hygiene subscale decreased significantly over time. Regarding the oral hygiene subscale, the test group showed significantly better scores at 30d (p = 0.011). CONCLUSION: Both chewing gums performed similarly effective in terms of reducing plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation and improving OHRQoL. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Chewing gums without antimicrobial ingredients may be sufficient to decrease plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation.

ABSTRACT

Preclinical studies have shown that the combination of Cistus × incanus L. and Scutellaria lateriflora L. extracts exerts beneficial effects on oral health against gingivitis. Thus, this study aimed to assess the tolerability of a chewing gum and its efficacy on gingivitis in a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Enrolled subjects (n = 60, 18-70 years) were randomized to receive two chewing gums or a placebo daily for 3 months. At baseline (t0) and monthly (t1, t2, and t3) timepoints, the Quantitative Gingival Bleeding Index (QGBI), the Modified Gingival Index (MGI), and the Oral Health 15 items (OH-15)] were employed to assess potential improvements in gingivitis. Pain was self-quantified via the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and the Clinical Global Impression Scale for Severity of illness (CGI-S) helped in evaluating the oral general conditions. This study is listed on the ISRCTN registry. At t3, the QGBI, MGI, OH-15, VAS, and CGI-S values decreased in the treated but not in the placebo group (ß = 0.6 ± 0.1, t176 = 3.680, p < 0.001; ß = 0.87 ± 0.21, t115 = 4.263, p < 0.001; ß = 5.3 ± 2.5, t172 = 2.086, p = 0.038; ß = 3.16 ± 0.51, t88 = 6.253, p < 0.001; and ß = 1.09 ± 0.32, t83 = 3.419, p < 0.001, respectively). A significant improvement in gingival health occurred after a 3-month intervention with the chewing gums containing S. lateriflora and C. incanus extracts.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: A systematic review of published data was carried out to assess the caries-preventive effects of xylitol chewing gums and candies in children. METHODS: Electronic and hand searches were performed to find clinical studies on the effects of xylitol chewing gums and candies on dental caries in children (≤ 18 years). Prospective randomised or controlled clinical trials published before 2023 were included in the review. RESULTS: The initial search identified 365 titles to be evaluated. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 15 articles with either fair or low quality were reviewed. Nine articles studied chewing gums, five candies, and one both of them. In the ten evaluated xylitol chewing gum studies xylitol consumption significantly reduced caries occurrence when compared with no treatment or a placebo polyol gum. The effect was clinically significant in studies with high or moderate caries level at study baseline. The results also suggested that the caries-reducing effect of xylitol gums may differ from sorbitol/polyol gums. In five of the six heterogenous xylitol candy studies, no caries-reducing effect was found independent of caries level. In addition to caries level, also the daily xylitol dose was a confounding factor. CONCLUSION: The present findings suggest that the caries-reducing effect of adding xylitol chewing gum to the daily diet has been well demonstrated in children and adolescents with high or moderate caries level at study baseline. Xylitol gum use could benefit subjects with active incipient caries lesions on smooth tooth surfaces.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the reliability of two methods used to assess masticatory performance and attempt to correlate them to achieve interchangeability between the methods. METHODS: Twelve healthy dentate volunteers (men = 6, women = 6; mean age = 28.3 ± 4.1) with no known dental or medical pathologies were requested to participate in this study. Each participant completed three masticatory performance assessments, including two two-colour mixing-ability tests using chewing-gums (CG: gum#1 and gum#2) and the gummy-jelly (GJ) test. For each method, participants created five samples each (total = 15 measurements per participant, gum#1 = 5, gum#2 = 5, GJ = 5). For the gum#1 and gum#2 methods, the predetermined chewing cycles were fixed at 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 cycles, and for the GJ method, the time duration was fixed at 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 s. The parameter measures were submitted to Z-score transformation, and Bland-Altman plots were generated to graphically compare the differences between two techniques against their means. Additionally, mountain plot was used to assess the cumulative distribution of measurement error between the methods. RESULTS: A total of 180 measurements were recorded. There were significant correlations between the number of chewing cycles/chewing time and masticatory performance using the gum#1 (r = -.753; p < .001), gum#2 (r = -.838; p < .001) and GJ (r = .730). When all tests were considered together for each method, significant correlations were found (p < .001). A descriptive range of mean values aiming to produce reference value ranges for predictive purposes was achieved considering the interchangeably among the methods [CG = GJ (VoH-mg = dL): 10 cycle = 10 s: 0.329 = 110; 15 cycles = 15 s: 0.177 = 164; 20 cycles = 20 s: 0.130 = 205; 25 cycles = 25 s: 0.086 = 200; 30 cycles = 30 s: 0.077 = 267]. CONCLUSION: The strong correlations and high consistency between the two masticatory performance methods found in this study conclude that the two assessment methods are reliable and interchangeable. Further evaluations are warranted to arrive at a conversion formula for translation of the results between the two methods.

BACKGROUND: Our previous studies demonstrated that sour cherry anthocyanins (AC) reduce the salivary count of Streptococcus mutans and inhibit salivary amylase activity within 30 minutes after chewing AC gum. AC gum and changing toothbrushes after scaling reduced the Gram-negative species in the unstimulated salivary microbiota. The present study examined the effect of AC gums on salivary factors, including changes in microbiome. METHODS: The study was conducted over three weeks with two groups; young adults (18-30) and adults (30-45). Ten participants changed their toothbrushes, while the other 10 participants did not change after the control period. After scaling, all participants received three doses of AC gum daily. The salivary mRNA and protein levels of cytokines, mucins, melatonin, and the microbiota of unstimulated and stimulated saliva were determined by polymerase chain reaction, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. RESULTS: Significantly higher levels of tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), mucin5B (MUC5B), mucin7 (MUC7), and melatonin were detected in stimulated saliva. Correlation analysis of these factors with the microbiota showed positive correlations with the genera Lachnospiraceae, Eikenella, Saccharibacteria_(TM7), Streptococcus, Prevotella, and Haemophilus. CONCLUSIONS: AC chewing gum has a beneficial effect on the composition of the oral microbiome, and toothbrush replacement leads to changes in the levels of salivary pro-inflammatory cytokines.

PURPOSE: We assess masticatory performance using color-changeable chewing gum, which shifts from yellow-green to red upon chewing. Previous studies used a colorimeter to reveal the cut-off a* values of the gum's color (a* represents the degree of color between red and green) to determine which foods are masticable (masticable meat, masticable soft side dish, and inadequate masticatory performance). Since a more convenient method is required, we examined the validity and reliability of visual measurement using a color scale to indicate masticable foods by observing the chewing gum's color. METHODS: Fifty patients (male, 48%), aged ≥ 65 (mean, 82.6) years were enrolled. Using color-changeable chewing gum, three groups were formed according to the cut-off a* values: masticable meat, masticable soft side dish, and inadequate masticatory performance. For the color scale classification, one physiatrist and one dietitian simultaneously, individually, and visually determined the chewing gum color and classified it into one of the three groups. Criterion-related validity was evaluated using the kappa coefficient of agreement between the results from the two methods. Inter-rater reliability was examined using the kappa coefficient of agreement between the three groups judged by the two raters on a color scale. RESULTS: The kappa coefficients of the agreement for the classifications were 0.908 and 0.909 for the physiatrist and dietitian, respectively. The inter-rater agreement between two raters on the color scale was 0.938 for the kappa coefficient. CONCLUSION: The color scale indicated masticable foods without a colorimeter. This method can be useful in older adult facilities and homes.

ABSTRACT

DESIGN: This study is an observational prospective longitudinal cohort study, following 102 children aged 1 to 12 months over a period of 24 months. At baseline, a dental examination was carried out to assess the number of carious lesions present using the ICDAS system, and a saliva sample was taken to assess the levels of Streptococcus mutans (SM) in saliva using the Dentocult SM saliva strip. Cohort caregivers received toothbrushing instruction and a 25% xylitol toothpaste tube for which they were instructed to use twice a day over a 3-month period, after which they returned to clinic at Pristina University to receive another tube. This process continued throughout the entire 24-month study period. At the end of the study, SM prevalence was recorded again. COHORT SELECTION: 102 children and their mothers were included in this study: 43 girls and 59 boys. At the beginning of the study, the child's mean age was 6.7 months, and at the end, 30.8 months. A random sample of 60 mothers was selected to analyse SM levels. DATA ANALYSIS: The data set was summarised descriptively using summary statistics, percentages and statistical tests. Values were expressed as a mean and standard deviation. SM prevalence comparison between baseline and endpoint was tested using chi-square statistics. RESULTS: At the baseline dental examination, the child's mean age was 6.7 (±3.7 months). At this point 59% of the 102 infants were edentulous. Caries was reported to be present in 12.4% of children. The mean ICDAS score was calculated as 0.70 (2.42 SD). When caries was present (87.6% of the 102 children included in the study), the majority of the caries experience (74.2%) was determined as at an early stage (ICAS score 1 or 2). 72.6% (n = 74/102) of children were infected with SM at baseline. 28 children had Level 1 (0) SM. 57 children had Level 2 and 3 (102-4) SM. 17 children had Level 4 SM (≥105) SM. The SM categorical distribution was statistically significant (p = 0.02). At endpoint, 53.5% (57/102) of children were SM infected. Parallel comparison of pre- and post-data sets show that there was a 19.1% reduction in SM levels overall following the introduction of the xylitol toothpaste. (p = 0.002). In the participant group with the highest SM level (Level 4), a net 12.2% reduction in SM prevalence occurred. The change in SM infection was deemed statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Brushing twice a day with toothpaste containing 25% xylitol shows a statistically significant decrease in SM levels. This shows a promising anticariogenic effect. Late SM colonisation is protective for future carious lesions. Xylitol can help prevent early childhood caries and early SM contamination.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative sore throat (POST) is a common postoperative complication. COMPLICATION: Chewing gum can inhibit the growth of oral bacteria, cleanse, and lubricate the oral cavity, which can help reduce postoperative sore throat. We hypothesize that chewing gum before surgery could relieve POST. METHODS: Patients planned to undergo total thyroidectomy under general anesthesia with tracheal intubation were randomized to swallow saliva twice or chew 1.4 g/2.8 g of gum for 2 minutes before surgery. A standard anesthesia protocol was performed. The numerical rating scale scores of POST at 1, 24, and 48 h after surgery were collected. The primary outcome was the incidence of moderate/severe POST (numerical rating scale score >3) within 48 h. RESULTS: Data from 148 patients (control group, n = 50; 1.4 g group, n = 48; and 2.8 g group, n = 50) were included in the analysis. Within 48 h, there was a significant difference among the three groups in the incidence of moderate/severe POST (control group: 74% vs. 1.4 g group: 65% vs. 2.8 g group: 50%. P = 0.04). The 2.8 g group had less incidence of moderate/severe POST than the control group (Odds Ratio = 0.351 95% Confidence Interval: (0.152 and 0.814) P = 0.02). CONCLUSION: Chewing 2.8 g gum before total thyroidectomy can reduce the incidence of moderate/severe POST within 48 h after surgery.

ABSTRACT

In this study, the effects of main gum base components, namely butyl rubber, polyvinyl acetate and natural resin, on the aroma (menthol) release mechanism and quality of sugar-free chewing gums were investigated. According to the results, the sensory evaluation of aroma release was closely similar to the analysis performed with the GC-MS equipment. The Korsmeyer-Peppas model was the best model explaining the menthol release from chewing gum, and it was found that the release was mostly in the form of Fickian diffusion. The polyvinyl acetate had the greatest effect on the aroma release, and the aroma intensity increased in parallel with the ratio in the formulations. According to the optimization results, softening temperatures and instrumental hardness of the sample, which showed the highest aroma durability were found to be 80.00 °C and 22.45 N.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease is a common neurodegenerative disorder in elderly with progressive decline in cognitive functions. This study aimed to investigate the possible memory-improving effects of Olibanum on patients with Alzheimer's disease. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHOD: This double-blind, randomized clinical trial was carried out on 72 participants aged 50-75 years. The intervention group (n = 36) received 1.6 g/day of olibanum chewing gum for 18 weeks. The placebo group (n = 36) received chewing gum without olibanum. Neuropsychological assessments were performed at baseline, every 4 weeks, and after 18 weeks of the intervention. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between (MD: 0.84, 95%CI: -1.10 to 2.78, p = 0.392) at baseline. Both groups had linear improvements over time. There was no significant difference between two groups regarding the improvements after the intervention (F = 0.157, p = 0.693). There were no significant differences between the groups for MMSE score (Mini-Mental State Examination) after the intervention (F = 0.141, p = 0.708). CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed that 18 weeks of gum chewing with Olibanum did not change the neuropsychological status. More clinical studies are needed to confirm these findings.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of denture adhesives on masticatory performance via a 10-center, parallel, randomized, controlled trial of complete denture wearers in Japan. METHODS: The trial was conducted between September 2013 and October 2016. The inclusion criteria were complete edentulism, willingness to undergo new complete denture treatment, and willingness to return for recall treatment. The exclusion criteria were age 90 years or older, presence of severe systemic illness, inability to understand the questionnaires, wearing metal base complete dentures, denture adhesive user, wearing prosthetics for maxillofacial defects, wearing complete dentures with tissue conditioners, and severe xerostomia. Randomization of the powder-type denture adhesive (powder), cream-type denture adhesive (cream), and control (saline) groups was performed using a sealed envelope system. Masticatory performance was measured using color-changeable chewing gum. Intervention blinding was not feasible. RESULTS: Sixty-seven control, 69 powder, and 64 cream participants are analyzed using the intention-to-treat principle. The participants in all groups show significantly improved masticatory performance at post-intervention (paired t-test with Bonferroni correction P < 0.0001). However, no significant difference in masticatory performance is detected among the three groups (one-way analysis of variance). A significant negative correlation between pre- and post-changes in masticatory performance and intraoral condition scores is observed (Pearson's correlation coefficient, P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Although denture adhesives improved the masticatory performance of complete denture wearers, their clinical effects are comparable to those of saline solution. The use of denture adhesives is more effective in complete denture wearers with unsatisfactory intraoral conditions.

BACKGROUND: Oral nicotine gum such as LUCY, which comes in colorful packaging, mimicking traditional chewing gum, is becoming popular. Many brands of gum have not been approved by the FDA for smoking cessation. This study examined public discourse about, including sentiment toward, oral nicotine gum on Twitter. METHODS: We used Twitter's Streaming Application Programming Interface to collect data from January 1, 2021, to December 21, 2021, using "nicotine gum" and/or "#nicotinegum" search terms (N = 19 171 unique tweets were collected). We used an inductive approach to become familiar with the data, generated a codebook, and conducted a content analysis on (n = 2152) tweets. RESULTS: Cessation (n = 716, 33.3%), personal experience (n = 370, 17.2%), and addiction to gum (n = 135, 6.3%) were the most prevalent themes. Cessation tweets primarily discussed cigarette smoking cessation (n = 418, 58.4% of cessation tweets) and successful cessation experiences (n = 155, 21.6%). Other identified themes pertained to using nicotine gum for cognitive enhancement or catching a "buzz" (n = 102, 4.7%), marketing (n = 98, 4.6%), using nicotine gum with other substances (n = 90, 4.2%), and adverse effects (n = 63, 2.9%). Sentiment analysis results revealed that 675 (44.2%) tweets were categorized as neutral, 605 (39.6%) tweets were classified as positive, and 248 tweets (16.2%) were negative. CONCLUSIONS: About one-third of tweets in our corpus mentioned nicotine gum in the context of smoking cessation. Most nicotine gum-related posts conveyed positive and neutral sentiments. Future studies should consider adding novel nicotine gum-specific search terms as well as exploring other social media platforms to gain more insights about these products. IMPLICATIONS: Our findings suggest that Twitter has the potential to track and facilitate conversations between those seeking cigarette cessation advice and those who have successfully quit tobacco by using nicotine gum. Monitoring of promotional content from nicotine gum companies is needed to ensure these products are not appealing to youth and nonusers of tobacco.

BACKGROUND: Various strategies were proposed to reduce postoperative ileus after colorectal surgery. This umbrella review aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of current evidence on measures to reduce the incidence and severity of postoperative ileus after colorectal surgery. METHODS: A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses-compliant systematic search was conducted in PubMed and Scopus to identify systematic reviews that assessed the efficacy of interventions used to prevent postoperative ileus after colorectal surgery. Data on study characteristics, interventions, and outcomes were summarized in a narrative manner. RESULTS: A total of 26 systematic reviews incorporating various strategies like early oral feeding, gum chewing, coffee consumption, medications, and acupuncture were included. Early oral feeding reduced postoperative ileus and accelerated bowel function return. The most assessed intervention was chewing gum, which was associated with a median reduction of postoperative ileus by 45% (range, 11%-59%) and shortening of the time to first flatus and time to defecation by a median of 11.9 and 17.7 hours, respectively. Coffee intake showed inconsistent results, with a median shortening of time to flatus and time to defecation by 1.32 and 14.45 hours, respectively. CONCLUSION: Early oral feeding, chewing gum, and alvimopan were the most commonly assessed and effective strategies for reducing postoperative ileus after colorectal surgery. Medications used to reduce postoperative ileus included alvimopan, intravenous lidocaine, dexamethasone, probiotics, and oral antibiotics. Intravenous dexamethasone and lidocaine and oral probiotics helped hasten bowel function return. Acupuncture positively impacted the recovery of bowel function.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative ileus is a common occurrence among children undergoing major operations, including gastrointestinal and spinal surgeries. Preliminary evidence in adults suggests that chewing gum plays a role in accelerating the return of postoperative gastrointestinal function. However, evidence is scarce in the paediatric population. The aim of this study was to investigate whether chewing gum has benefits for children. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Trials databases for randomised controlled trials that compare gum chewing with standard care after elective surgery in children from 1st Jan 2005 to 31st July 2021. We assessed the identified trials for quality and performed a systematic review and meta-analysis in accordance with PRISMA and registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022358801). The main outcome measures examined were time to flatus and stool postoperatively, time to tolerate oral intake, and length of hospital stay, which were analysed using fixed effects models. We also examined clinical complication rates and postoperative pain control. RESULTS: We included six eligible trials, with a total of 357 enrolled patients. The intervention was well tolerated without complications. There was no significant difference in time to flatus (-2.86 h; 95 % CI: -6.2 to 0.47 h, p = 0.09), time to stool (-6.39 h; 95 % CI: -13.9 to 1.2 h, p = 0.1), time to tolerate oral intake (-0.03 days; 95 % CI: -0.15 to 0.1 days, p = 0.68), and length of hospital stay (0.08 days; 95 % CI: -0.07 to 0.22 days, p = 0.29). Postoperative pain control (opioid consumption, pain score, nausea score) was similar in both groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Current evidence demonstrates that gum chewing is not associated with earlier postoperative gastrointestinal recovery in children. Future adequately powered and well-designed trials are necessary to evaluate any clinical benefit of chewing gum for children and whether it could result differences in healthcare satisfaction. ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: The transcranial magnetic stimulation tests of short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI) by both conventional amplitude measurements (A-SICI) and threshold-tracking (T-SICI) are important methods to investigate intracortical inhibitory circuits, and T-SICI has been proposed to aid the diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Beverages containing caffeine are widely consumed, and caffeine has been reported to affect cortical excitability. The aim of this study was to determine whether these SICI tests are affected by caffeine. METHODS: Twenty-four healthy subjects (13 females, 11 males, aged from 19 to 31, mean: 26.2 ± 2.4 years) were studied in a single fixed-dose randomized double-blind placebo-controlled cross-over trial of 200 mg caffeine or placebo ingested as chewing gum. A-SICI and T-SICI, using parallel tracking (T-SICIp), were performed before and after chewing gum. RESULTS: There was no significant change in SICI parameters after placebo in A-SICI (p > .10) or T-SICIp (p > .30), and no significant effect of caffeine was found on A-SICI (p > .10) or T-SICIp (p > .50) for any of the interstimulus intervals. DISCUSSION: There is no need for caffeine abstention before measurements of SICI by either the T-SICI or A-SICI measurements.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the effect of the consumption of caffeinated chewing gum on the performance of Romanian deadlift on the flywheel training device. A total of 19 participants completed a randomized, cross-over, single-blind experiment with food-grade caffeinated chewing gum trial (CAF) or placebo trail (PL). Gum were chewed for 10 min and rest for 15 min prior to the Romanian deadlift test using the inertial resistance training machine. 5 sets of 6 Romanian deadlifts were performed, with a 3-min rest between sets, followed by a 7-day washout period before the next set of trials. The average power, average force, total peak power, peak concentric power, peak eccentric power, heart rate, and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) for each trials were analyzed using paired-T test. Compared to placebo, caffeinated chewing gum trial enhanced peak concentric power (P = 0.016, Cohen's d = 0.44), peak eccentric power (P = 0.005, Cohen's d = 0.55), average power (P = 0.013, Cohen's d = 0.43), and total work (P = 0.026, Cohen's d = 0.28). However, in average force (P = 0.063, Cohen's d = 0.50), RPE (P = 0.266), and heart rate (P = 0.143), were no significant differences between trials. Caffeinated chewing gum with a dose of caffeine of 200 mg for 10 min may acutely enhance Romanian deadlift performance on the flywheel machine.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effect of chewing gum on orthodontic pain and to determine the rate of bracket breakage associated with fixed orthodontic appliances. METHODS: This review and its reporting were performed according to the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and the PRISMA guidelines. Six electronic databases were searched up to March 16, 2023, to identify relevant studies that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Furthermore, grey literature resources were searched. The Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias tool 2 was used to assess the quality of the included studies. Meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan, and sensitivity analysis and publication bias analysis were performed using STATA software. GRADE tool was used to evaluate the certainty of evidence. RESULTS: Fifteen studies with 2116 participants were ultimately included in this review, and 14 studies were included in the meta-analysis. Compared with the blank group, chewing gum had a significant pain relieving effect at all times after fixation of the initial archwire (P ≤ 0.05). No significant difference was found between the chewing gum group and the analgesics group at any timepoints (P > 0.05). Only four studies evaluated the rate of bracket breakage and revealed that chewing gum did not increase the rate of bracket breakage. The sensitivity analysis showed that there was no significant difference in the pooled outcomes after the included studies were removed one at times, and Egger analysis revealed no significant publication bias in included studies (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Chewing gum is a non-invasive, low-cost and convenient method that has a significant effect on relieving orthodontic pain and has no effect on the rate of bracket breakage. Therefore, chewing gum can be recommended as a suitable substitute for analgesics to reduce orthodontic pain.
