ABSTRACT

It was performed a descriptive, transversal study in the medical office at Zamuro community, Saint Rafael parish, Tucupita, in Delta Amacuro state, the universe was made by the children between the etharian groups of 5 to 9 years old, the sample consisted on 112 children that came to the consult with clinical manifestations of intestinal parasitism produced by helminths, there were excluded 28 of them that did not fulfill the inclusion criteria, the patients were selected at random with the objective to show the behavior of the treatment with the pumpkin seeds for this parasitic illness, during the period between January to July, 2012. The male sex prevailed, obtaining the healing in children after the application of the treatment with the seed of pumpkin and it was evidenced the inocuity and effectiveness of the treatment, for that purpose it was performed a clinical comparison using the variable of time, before and after the treatment(EU)

ABSTRACT

The parasitoid Lixophaga sp. (Diptera: Tachinidae) occurred in larvae of Diaphania nitidalis (Cramer, 1782) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) in a commercial pumpkin plantation in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil. This is the first report of Lixophaga sp. parasitizing Diaphania sp. in the South America, and there are few reports concerning hosts of this genus. The morphologic characterization of the adults was made at the Department of Zoology, Institute of Bioscience, of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. Of the larvae collected in the field, 26.2% were parasitized, with an average of 2.2 pupae per larva and a viability of 14.3%. This parasitoid presented potential for the control of D. nitidalis.

ABSTRACT

Field assays were performed to evaluate the attractiveness and the non-preference of whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biotype B for oviposition on squash genotypes (Cucurbita pepo) and to observe the susceptibility of genotypes (Novita, Sandy, Caserta Cac Melhorada, Novita Plus, Samira, Bianca, AF-2858 and Caserta TS) to silverleaf symptoms. The Sandy genotype was the least attractive to whitefly, while Novita Plus, AF-2858 and Samira were the most attractive. The Caserta Cac Melhorada genotype was the least preferred for oviposition. The Sandy and AF-2858 genotypes were the most productive, with the highest mean of fruits produced. The lowest silverleaf symptoms index was observed for the Sandy and Caserta Cac Melhorada genotypes.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this research was to evaluate the biological behaviour of melonworm at different natural and artificial diets. Squash cultivar jacaré, cucumber, summer squash and an artificial diets developed by Hensley & Hammond for the sugarcane borer were tried. The research was carried out in the Laboratório de Entomologia do Centro de Ciências Agrárias of the Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, in climatized room at 25 ± 1ºC, relative humidity of 70 ± 10 percent and 14h photofase. The caterpillars fed on each substrate during the whole life cycle. Differences in duration of the larval period, larvae and pupae survival, adult longevity and number of eggs were registered between the substrates. The results show that the best diet for rearing is the artificial one. Between the natural diets the cucumber showed the best results.
