ABSTRACT

Mitchell's trimmer, also known as an osteo-trimmer, osteocarver or osteocarver #4, is a commonly used instrument in a dental professional's armamentarium. Today the instrument is used in a range of dental specialties; however, its modern use has no association to trimming. This article explores the origin of the Mitchell's trimmer, its intended use and reveals the founder of the renowned instrument.

ABSTRACT

Many surgical instruments are used in oral and maxillofacial surgery that bear the name of their creator. However, who these persons really were is generally unknown. The purpose of this report was to identify some of those surgeons who developed instruments during the 19th century that continue to make oral and maxillofacial operations easier for surgeons and patients.

ABSTRACT

The University Museum of the University of Utrecht houses within its walls a dentistry collection. A range of dental instruments is on display here which have been used through the ages to deliver people from toothaches. A long time passed, however, before instruments for tooth extraction had been developed which, with the benefit of anatomical knowledge, could effectively grasp teeth. In the middle of the 19th century, general anaesthetics were (re) discovered and that represented an enormous breakthrough. The 'tooth operator' was finally able to treat the patient in a relaxed manner. That opened up a world of medical possibilities. Musclemen who could restrain the patient were no longer necessary and in surgical treatments time became a much less pressing factor. From the beginning of the 20th century, the increase in medical knowledge also made huge advances possible, and the possibilities for dental treatment multiplied.

ABSTRACT

Dental standards play a vital and important role in society by contributing to the quality and safety levels of products used in dental treatments by dental professionals as well as the hygiene products used by the general public. Few members of the public or indeed many dentists fully appreciate the contribution made by ISO international dental standards to the safety and quality of dental care. Further more the United Kingdom played a significant role in the establishment of the international standards organisation (ISO). The first two meetings of the dental international standards committee took place in England. In this article Derek W. Jones outlines the significant and important role played by the UK during the fifty years of dental international standards.
