This paper describes her struggles and successes in attaining her goal, which was reached in 1895 when she became the first, female, qualified dentist. ABSTRACT

Women currently form the majority of dentists in Latin America, yet the historical reasons for this development have not been explored. As early as the second decade of the 20th century, a high number of dental students in Argentina were women, yet the stories of these early women dentists have not been told. This study uses the life of María Teresa Saleme, a pioneering woman dentist, as a case study to describe the experiences of early woman dentists in Argentina. This study posits that the way in which the professionalization of dentistry occurred in Argentina set the stage for the subsequent predominance of women in the field. Sources include archival research and personal interviews. In addition, a review was undertaken of the current literature on early women dentists, the history of dentistry in Argentina, and the professionalization of dentistry.

ABSTRACT

As the first woman lecturer in prosthetic dentistry at the Dental Institute of the University of Utrecht, Jans Gretha Schuiringa (1887-1975) had to win a position in a rapidly developing field. She undeniably made a significant contribution to the development of dental education and more specifically to the field of dental surgical prosthetics. Her dedication to her patients led her to strive continuously for better methods of treatment. From time to time, however, her militant character provoked resistance from her colleagues, curators of the medical faculty and students. After dentistry had obtained the ius promovendi in 1947, she was passed over for a professorship and felt, as a result, that she was not properly acknowledged. Archival research shows that her personality played a major role in her rejection.

ABSTRACT

There are several women pioneers in prosthodontics, and each deserves recognition and admiration for all she has achieved in helping bridge the gender gap in dentistry. Women have come a long way from being first depicted as a thieving woman assistant in early 1523 to becoming award-winning, Board-certified clinicians, program directors, department chairs, and deans of dental schools. However, current female resident membership in the American College of Prosthodontists is less than 40%. Women in leadership roles are still scarce, and advancement is still needed. This article provides a brief summary of the history of prosthodontics, highlighting prominent women prosthodontists and their stories, while providing inspiration for future prosthodontists, men as well as women.

ABSTRACT

Over the last century and a half, the Massachusetts Dental Society (MDS) has evolved from a small group of dentists meeting to share knowledge into a complex, well-functioning organization of nearly 5,000 dentists that meets the needs of its members, as well as those of the general population. Its mission is dedicated to "improving the oral health of the public and professional development of its membership through initiatives in education, advocacy and promotion of the highest professional standards." What began as a small group of dentists has evolved into a large, effective body that has endeavored to better the practice of dentistry and improve the oral health of residents in the Commonwealth. And in 2014, the MDS is celebrating its Sesquicentennial.
