ABSTRACT

Different physiological performances are often optimized at slightly varying temperatures, which can lead to ectotherms selecting higher body temperatures during certain physiological efforts (e.g., digestion, reproduction). Such thermophilic responses can lead to temperature-based tradeoffs between two physiological activities with differing optimal temperatures or between optimizing a physiological activity and water balance, as water loss is elevated at higher temperatures. For example, ectotherms will often select a higher body temperature after consuming a meal, but the extent to which body temperature is elevated after eating is affected by its hydric state. Despite this known hydration state-based suppression of thermophily associated with digestion, the impact of this reduced body temperature on digestion performance is unknown. Accordingly, we determined whether small, thermophily-relevant changes in body temperature impact digestive efficiency or passage time and whether sex influenced the extent of the effect. Eighteen (9 female and 9 male) Children's pythons (Antaresia childreni) each consumed a meal at three temperatures (29 °C, 30 °C, and 31 °C), and gut passage time and digestive efficiency were determined. We found that neither metric was affected by temperature over the range tested. However, digestive efficiency was significantly impacted by the interaction between sex and temperature with males having significantly lower digestive efficiency than females at 31 °C, but not 29 °C or 30 °C. Our results provide insight into the effects of temperature on digestive physiology across narrow temperature ranges as well as demonstrate a sex-based difference in digestive physiology.

ABSTRACT

Aulacophora lewisii Baly (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is an important pest of Luffa acutangula (L.) Roxb. (Cucurbitaceae) in India. Larvae of A. lewisii feed on the roots, while adults consume leaves of L. acutangula. In the current study, effects of three L. acutangula cultivars (Abhiskar, Debsundari, and Jaipur Long) on the life table parameters by age-stage, two-sex approach, and key digestive enzymatic activities (amylolytic, proteolytic, and lipolytic) of the larvae and adults of A. lewisii were determined. Further, nutrients (total carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, amino acids, and nitrogen content) and antinutrients (total phenols, flavonols, and tannins) present in the roots and leaves of three cultivars were estimated. The development time (egg to adult emergence) was fastest and slowest on Jaipur Long (31.80 days) and Abhiskar (40.91 days), respectively. Fecundity was highest and lowest on Jaipur Long (279.91 eggs) and Abhiskar (137.18 eggs), respectively. The intrinsic rate of increase (r) was lowest on Abhiskar (0.0511 day-1) and highest on Jaipur Long (0.0872 day-1). The net reproductive rate (R0) was lowest on Abhiskar (23.32 offspring female-1). The mean generation time (T) was shortest on Jaipur Long (52.59 days) and longest on Abhiskar (61.58 days). The amylolytic, proteolytic, and lipolytic activities of larvae and adults of A. lewisii were highest and lowest on Jaipur Long and Abhiskar, respectively. The lower level of nutrients and higher level of antinutrients influenced higher larval development time and lower fecundity of A. lewisii on Abhiskar than other cultivars. Our results suggest that Abhiskar cultivar could be promoted for cultivation.

ABSTRACT

In the Southeast of Mexico, there are many native cichlids with commercial interest such as redhead cichlid (Vieja melanurus) and twoband cichlid (V. bifasciata), which have a great local demand and excellent meat quality. However, it is necessary to implement their culture based on nutrition studies and digestive biochemistry. This study's objective was to characterize these two cichlids' digestive proteases (pH, temperature, and inhibitors) through biochemistry techniques. Results showed that V. melanurus and V. bifasciata have a digestive capacity analogous to other omnivore fishes, where the optimal pH values of stomach proteases (4 and 2, respectively) and intestinal proteases (6 and 12, respectively), the optimal temperature of acid (35°C and 55°C, respectively) and alkaline proteases (45°C and 55°C, respectively) are quite similar. Both species presented high thermal and pH stabilities. Inhibition showed that V. melanurus is more sensitive to specific inhibitors for alkaline proteases than V. bifasciata. In conclusion, V. bisfasciata and V. melanurus have different digestive protease patterns. Both species can hydrolyze different protein ingredients to formulate a specific diet. Nevertheless, V. bifasciata is more resistant to the presence of inhibitors, which allow it to include vegetable proteins in its diet.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of replacing corn silage with sugarcane in the diet of lactating Saanen goats and to determine their intake and digestibility of nutrients, ingestive behavior, milk yield and composition. The experimental diets were composed of increasing levels (0, 33, 66 and 100%) of substitution in dry matter (DM). Twelve multiparous Saanen goats, with an average body weight of 45.2kg, average milk yield of 3.0kg day-1, distributed in a triple latin square experimental design (4 × 4) were used. The dry matter intake (DMI) and other nutrients were estimated through the difference between the total nutrient in the food offered and its total in the leftovers. The DMI, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and total digestible nutrients were not influenced, but the apparent digestibility of DM and NDF decreased. Feeding time and feeding efficiency were not influenced, the rumination and total chewing times increased, and the leisure time decreased, both linearly. Milk yield was not influenced by substitution levels, but corrected milk yield to 3.5% fat decreased. Sugar cane represents a dietary alternative for goats with medium milk yield in critical periods of forage, since it does not change the consumption of DM and milk yield, even with the apparent declining digestibility of some nutrients, influencing the ingestive behavior of the animals.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Short-tailed pipe fish (Microphis brachyurus) is a freshwater organism with high economic potential for the aquarium hobby, so it is necessary to implement methods to promote its culture through studies of digestive physiology. General activities of acid and alkaline proteases were evaluated, as well as the effect of pH, temperature and inhibitors. The optimal pH of stomach proteases was 2, while the optimal pH of intestinal proteases was 10. Optimal temperature for the acidic proteases was 35 ºC, while for alkaline proteases it was 45 ºC. Thermal stability showed high resistance at 35 ºC for both acid and alkaline proteases (above 100% residual activity). Acid proteases are resistant at pH 2 (50% of residual activity), meanwhile alkaline proteases were highly resistant at pH 10 (90% of residual activity). Acid proteases were inhibited by 80% with pepstatin A and alkaline proteases were inhibited with TLCK and TPCK for trypsin (75%) and chymotrypsin (80%), respectively. Finally, metallo-proteases were 75% partially inhibited some serine proteases by 75% with EDTA. In conclusion, M. brachyurus has a good digestive capacity, since they can degrade a wide variety of proteins due to their greater proteolytic activity.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Several international organizations recognize the problems of nutritional disorders as a health problem that affects the entire world. The way how human beings assume their food has an impact on their intrinsic disposition towards diseases, being particularly striking in the early stages of life, especially in pre-school age because of its impact on the development of the individual. About this situation, the authors of the manuscript carried out an epidemiological and salubrious analysis from different positions established in the reviewed literature.

ABSTRACT

Anorectal motor and functional disorders are common among the general population. Anorectal manometry allows the study of anorectal motor activity both at rest and mimicking different physiological situations. High-resolution anorectal manometry (HR-ARM) and high-definition anorectal manometry (HD-ARM) are increasingly used in clinical practice. In comparison with the conventional technique, HR-ARM and HD-ARM catheters provide a higher number of recording points because of their many, closely packed circumferential sensors. This allows time-space visualization (topographic or 2-3-plane mode) as spatially continuous measurements are obtained by interpolation between near sensors. HR-ARM and HD-ARM allow a more standardized, reproducible technique, and a better assessment and understanding of the functional anatomy of the sphincter complex. Newer specific parameters are now being developed for use with these systems. They are being currently assessed by multiple research teams, and many of them remain unavailable for clinical practice as of today. However, they provide highly relevant information, which is now prompting a redefinition of anorectal anatomy and physiology. The goal of the present review was to describe the currently available HR-ARM and HD-ARM techniques, to discuss the normal values so far reported, and to analyze the newer parameters that may be assessed with these techniques, and which will likely be highly useful for clinical practice in the upcoming future

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to describe the diagnosis of health problems and to evaluate the cost of their treatment for cattle raised in feedlots to be slaughtered or to be sold as sires for cow-calf systems. Bovine respiratory disease and digestive disorders were the main problems diagnosed in the feedlot for slaughter; the cost for treatment was high, accounting for 9.7 to 20.9 kg of live weight (LW) or the equivalent of 7 to 15% of total LW gained over the days on feed. Due to the high intake of starch-rich concentrate, rumen and fecal pH was lower, whilst rumen osmolarity and blood lactate were higher in cattle fed for slaughter. Cattle affected by digestive disorders spent on average four additional days in the feedlot. Diseases and cost of treatments were associated with lower average daily gain and considerable economic losses. Health problems commonly observed in the feedlots for slaughter were not observed in the feedlots for males to be sold as sires. The most likely reason for this observation was the more careful nutrition and prophylactic health management in sire production systems, which produce animals of much higher selling price. Results from this study suggest that health problems found in feedlots for slaughter may not only reduce animal productivity and profitability, but also the welfare of the animals. The systemic understaffing of livestock cattle workers and veterinarians in large feedlots in Brazil results in under reporting of diseases and lack to understand epidemiological context and disease prevention.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Aim: The current evaluation criteria assess not only the acquisition of cognitive skills that facilitate the gradual assimilation of the contents, but also specific responsibilities to develop the professional profile. Therefore, in this study we analyzed advantages and disadvantages of obligatory daily attendance respect to free for the postgraduate subject Physiology of the digestion of the Master Physiology and Neuroscience of the University of Seville. Material and Methods: We compared the scores of students in the postgraduate subject of Physiology of Digestion during two academic courses (courses 2010-2011 and 2011-2012), with obligatory attendance, and the two following courses (2012-2013 and 2013-2014) where this criterion was not evaluated. Results and Discussion: Students with obligatory attendance didn’t attended more to class that their free attendance partners; they even had a lower percentage of maximum qualifications. These students presented about a 5% of failing grades. When attendance was free, students didn’t fail and participated with more interest in innovation activity. Conclusions: According to these results, we could suggest that in postgraduate studies the mandatory attendance decreased the interest and efficiency of students. However, the free attendance promoted participation in class and in complementary innovation activity, and it also improved the qualifications of students. Therefore, mandatory attendance is not a good evaluation criterion for the subject of Physiology of Digestion

ABSTRACT

Ruminal degradability of dry matter, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber of cultivars Stylozanthes guianensis (Mineirão) and Stylozanthes spp. (Campo Grande) were evaluated. Two incubations in rumen-fistulated adult bovine females were undertaken. Each incubation comprised of 25 samples of 7.0 g of each cultivar and samples were collected at 0, 6, 9, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72 and 96 hours after incubation. At a 5 percent/hour passage rate, Stylozanthes guianensis had 75.70, 59.01 and 76.81 percent effective degradability for dry matter, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber, respectively, whereas Stylozanthes spp. had 68.39, 51.93 and 58.89 percent for the same fractions. The lag time was different (P<0.05) only for acid detergent fiber. Stylozanthes guianensis presented higher ruminal degradability in dry matter and fiber fraction when compared to those by Stylozanthes spp. The decision to adopt one or another cultivar depends on studies that take into account the cost of deployment and maintenance of leguminous cultivar and its assets...

ABSTRACT

Lactating cow performance on diets containing citrus pulp and two levels of high moisture corn silage was evaluated. Treatments were: hard texture corn or soft texture corn ensiled at the black layer, with a 9% or 18% factorial corn in the diet. Dietary citrus pulp content was 16.2% or 25.6%, for high and low corn, respectively. Twelve cows received the treatments in 4x4 Latin Squares. Daily milk yield was 27.9kg for hard corn and 28.8 for soft (P=0.19). High corn decreased milk fat content from 3.38 to 3.26% (P=0.04), and increased protein content from 2.99 to 3.03% (P=0.05) and feed efficiency from 1.50 to 1.57kg of milk/kg of intake (P=0.03). The increase of corn content generated a greater decrease in ruminal pH in the soft corn diet than in the hard corn diet (P=0.05 for the interaction of texture versus corn content). Soft corn increased the daily intake of digestible organic matter from 11.7 to 12.3kg (P=0.05). Digestive parameters suggest that ensilaging did not totally eliminate the endosperm texture effect on corn digestibility.

ABSTRACT

The experiment was realized to determine the chemical composition and energetic values of cookie waste (CW), wafer waste (WW), caramel chocolate waste (CCW) and candy and chocolate bar waste (CCBW) using nursery piglets as an experimental model. Ten castrated piglets weighing 7.4±0.97kg individually housed in a metabolic cage were used. The piglets were distributed in five treatments: 1) Reference diet (RD); 2) 60% RD + 40% CW; 3) 60% RD + 40% WW; 4) 80% RD + 20% CCW; and, 5) 80% RD + 20% CCBW. The experiment was repeated in three consecutive 12 day timeframes, being seven for adaptation and five for total collection of feces and urine. The ferric oxide was used as fecal marker. Randomized block design was used to compare the digestibility coefficients. Crude protein values were 7.96, 10.78, 6.33 and 4.01 for cookie flour, dry wafer, caramel chocolate and candy and chocolate bars, respectively. A high amount of ether extract was observed on cookie flour and dry wafer (11.7 and 9.4%, respectively), however the chocolate by-products presented higher values (24.7 and 34.3%, for caramel chocolate and candy and chocolate bars, respectively). There was no difference (P>0.05) among digestibility coefficients of nutrients and energy and metabolizability energy coefficients among the feedstuff studied. The digestible and metabolisable energy values were 3914 and 3745; 4040 and 3767; 4454 and 4200; and, 4937 and 4790 kcal/kg for cookie flour, dry wafer, caramel chocolate and candy and chocolate bars, respectively. It is concluded that cookie flour, dry wafer, caramel chocolate and candy and chocolate bars have potential to be used in the diets of nursery pigs.
